Back on my bullshit talking about the details in IWTV.
This time: the dance at the mardi gras ball.
Every single time I watch this scene I am floored by the beautiful moment where Louis gets lost in Lestat's eyes and the entire room full of people melt away into nothing and for that brief moment it's just him and Lestat embracing on the gallery floor. It speaks volumes about how Louis' memories of Lestat can be altered by his romanticised recollection seen through the lens of his love. It's a visual representation of the way emotions can alter your perception of reality.
They enter through a fairly busy room, walking between people to take their positions to dance.
Tumblr media
As they bow to each other and come together into a waltz hold, the crowd moves to the outer edge of the room, surrounding them. You can't look in any direction without seeing a sea of masked faces.
Tumblr media
The crowd is a constant presence as they dance, even in shots focusing on Louis and Lestat the crowd is visible in the background.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Then, as Louis starts to speak about his attempt at distraction being mirrored back onto him in Lestat's eyes, the crowd just disappears.
Almost imperceptibly at first, there are no people in the background.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Then it cuts to a wide shot and the gallery is completely empty except for Louis and Lestat dancing through the space, lost in each other's eyes. Nothing exists but the two of them and this beautiful moment between them.
Tumblr media
Then they kiss.
Tumblr media
We hear the crowd's response, but in the moment of the kiss they are still invisible in Louis' recollection of that night. It's just him and Lestat. Nothing else matters in this moment but them.
This illusion is then broken as the camera cuts completely away from the couple to show the crowd's reaction to the kiss.
Tumblr media
It brings us back to the room with a harsh return to reality, showing us the shock, disgust, and mockery from the crowd, which Louis' rose tinted memory of this moment has shielded us from until now.
Tumblr media
Then Claudia brings Louis and Lestat out of the moment and back to reality by breaking them apart and asking Louis to dance, and the illusion is broken for Louis as well as the audience. He is fully back in the reality of the moment now.
The way this sequence is shot to allow this moment of altered memory creates such a beautiful moment in this episode. It's subtle, but so powerful, and it says so much about how Louis feels about this moment, his wider relationship to Lestat, and society's view of him as a Black queer man.

“So that’s [“Wild Pear Tree”] the first poem in the book after the frontispiece poem, and it really is sort of a poem for my cat, which is a silly thing to say, but it isn’t. My cat was my only companion for a long time, and he is in my current life the person who has really sort of known all of the “me”s that I’ve been. I got him when he was—his name is Filfy, f-i-l-f-y—and I got him when he was four weeks old. His mother had rejected him. He was the runt of his litter. He was flea bitten, and, you know, you could literally, like, if you pinched his fur you would come up with a pinch of fleas. And he had ringworm and roundworm and a respiratory infection and ear mites, and his eyes were swollen shut. I thought he was blind, but it was just he had so many fleas. And we just sort of nursed each other to health; we were kittens together. There were—I mean, not to get too “war story-y,” but there were lots of mornings or nights when he would be the one who came and sort of pawed at my face, and I would sort of wake up and realize that I hadn’t been breathing. This is, like, a real thing that happened, and he was the only one in the house. There was also another instance where I left the front door open one night—I mean, it was cold, because I couldn’t be responsible for anything—and lots of cats if you leave the front door open will sort of dart off never to be seen again. When I woke up the next morning, Filfy was in the doorway, and all these neighborhood cats were on the sort of, like, front area trying to come in, and Filfy was just there guarding the doorway, so we were really in it. I’m getting goosebumps talking about that. We were really in it together, and yeah, I mean, that poem I think is for him.”
— Kaveh Akbar, in an interview

"Turner writes in a kind of kidnapper's capital letters, and tells me his handwriting gets neater as he begins to trust the lyrics."
"I don't know how much sense it would make. Often looks like an algorithm or something by the time I'm finished."

It’s always embarrassing when a character in a book is a writer and publishes a book that you’re told is incredibly well-written and a best-seller and you get a suspicious amount of fawning over how brilliant the character’s book is and how clever the title is and how glowing the reviews are, until you realise you’ve been ambushed by an insidious form of self-insert fanfiction in what looked like serious literature. I once read a book in which a character was writing a book whose plot was “structured like a cathedral” and I was like well that sounds nice, I wish I was reading that book instead. It’s fine to have a character who’s a successful writer but as a rule it’s not a good idea to frustrate your reader by making her feel like the book you wrote is inferior to the fictional book

Why is every Good Omens season 1 interview like;
JH: I actually love hanging out with these guys, we had a lot of fun
*DT and MS staring lovingly at each other and giggling*
JH: guys, we should hang out more
DT and MS: “oh hey Jon” *goes back to staring at each other lovingly*
