If riverdale ends with everyone ending up in a new version of the town where they’ve succeeded in “bending towards justice”, erasing everything from the previous seasons so they can all live happily in new!Riverdale, would that be a satisfying ending for you? It certainly won’t for me, but unfortunately that seems to be the direction we’re headed… and I don’t like it :/ invalidating the first 6 seasons of your show makes the entire show pointless.

This whole season lowkey feels like a waste so far - there’s no plot progression! All we’re doing is slogging through things we as the audience already know (I don’t need to see why Varchie doesn’t work for the 80 billionth time, or watch Kevin struggle to come out when he’s always been out and proud, or watch Cheryl torture herself by being with Archie when we all know she’s a lesbian). Why bother investing in these new relationships like Kevin & Clay, Jeronica, or Cheryl & Toni if none of this is going to matter… unless it is going to matter beyond the 50’s, in which case the previous 6 seasons get thrown out the window and we disregard everything these characters have gone through, their lives and families, and all of their development. Making the last season of your show an AU is just a godawful choice. It’s fun for maybe an episode or two, but it certainly shouldn’t be more than half the season! We’re only 3 episodes in and it’s already tired, laughably irrelevant, and blatantly mocking fans and the relationships we’ve all come to love.

I like the idea of the characters in the '50s (most of them at least) not being weighed down by the pain and the trauma of the last six seasons. But you are right, that works when it is something like Rivervale for a few episodes. It doesn't hit the same way in the final season — especially when it looks like most of it will be set in the '50s.

The only way I feel like it won't fall flat for me is if they return to the present day with their memories. Specifically, though, I think they would need to regain their memories in the '50s and spend a good chunk of time in the know before they get to the present vs too much time as these new versions of themselves.

I think in an ideal world this '50s storyline could be compelling if it shapes the characters we already spent so much time with. Like if Betty and Archie still find their way back to one another proving that they are meant to be in any universe. Or Cheryl and Toni getting their happily ever after which helps them get back together in the present without all the big obstacles still at play.

Long story short, I do agree with all of your points. We have only seen 3 episodes out of 20 but it feels too ambitious for a season that needs to wrap things up. The only thing from the '50s that we actually need (in my opinion) is Clay. Take him and leave everything else.

what are your favorite riverdale characters, ships, friendships, storylines + ranking of the seasons? :)

characters: i could probably write a literal essay on each and every one of them, but my top girlies are cheryl, betty, and archie

ships: the short answer is whatever's funniest, but the long answer is that i would kind of love for jarchie to go canon. and beronica would be icing on the cake. choni also holds a special place in my heart for unclear reasons (read: i think they're cute and it overpowers my need for narrative logic). i think cheryl is kind of bad for toni, but i think she's also worked hard over the time jump to get better. or at least weirder (complimentary). veggie was also kind of a delight; just two gorgeous wannabe mobsters and their beautiful little scams. i also really genuinely love jabitha. easily the healthiest, most functional relationship the show has ever seen. finally, the truth of the matter is that any dating combination of the core four would be interesting and fucked up in a different way, so i think regardless of how things end, it'll be narratively rich.

friendships: betty and cheryl!! weird, scary, pretty cousins who maybe sometimes kind of hate each other but will also do anything for each other? very slay. betty and veronica is also very compelling, especially in early seasons, so i'd love more of that in season 7. jughead and archie.... well yes! fellas is it gay if you mythologize your best friend as a shirtless folk hero? i also really want betty and toni to do more together!!

storylines: THE FARM!! when chad michael murray stood up and clapped at the musical, i felt like jesus must've felt when he ascended into heaven. i also loved literally everything about season 6. rivervale was so smart and well-planned, and the way it all tied together was perfection. it's not queerbaiting, it's saving the world. the way things all came together with the mothmen storyline was also deeply inspired. my favorite running joke, which i guess is a bit of a storyline, is hermione on rhony. hiram and veronica's entire relationship arc is kind of everything. oh and abigail and thomasina and poppyseed and all of those historical riverdale lesbian character studies!! i am literally so certain there's stuff i'm forgetting because i'm doing this off the top of my head and i need to get back to my rewatch!!

seasons: okay this is by no means definitive because the seasons don't exist super separately in my head for some reason? but this is a vague contour of my thoughts: 6 > 3 > 5 > 4 > 1 (feels stupid to have it relatively low because it came out of the gate giving everything and setting a wonderful stage) > 2 (and 2 is such a good season, i'm just scared of the black hood lmao)

RIVERDALE - thoughts on 6x05

I LOVED THIS EPISODE SO MUCH. I am pretty sure the last time I felt this happy about a Riverdale episode was like…way back in season 3. Even though these writers can’t for their own sakes write a consistent story, I think 6x05 was was of the funnest, most entertaining and different episodes this show ever had. I loved it.

Some stuff I would like to point out:

I love that they took a sci-fi turn with this storyline because it just felt so different and interesting. It kept me intrigued until the end (…and afterwards too. I still need answers).

I understood very close to 0 about why the hell they had to recreate moments and how suddenly everyone was alive and overall…anything. I basically didn’t understand shit about it. But I loved it anyway.

CHONI: Are we going to ignore that still in RiverVale Toni was no longer La Llorona, and that she called Cheryl “babe”, that Cheryl wasn’t a cult leader and they seemed to be dating again? Did I miss something?

Bringing Ross Butler back just felt like the writers were mocking themselves. Like…we are super inconsistent with everything. However, here is a cheap yet very smart explanation as to why Reggie’s appearance changed. It was probably my favorite moment and I LOVED it so much! I screamed! And laughed so hard. This really felt like Riverdale making fun of Riverdale.

BUGHEAD. I don’t even have to say anything else. It’s just…them. Their chemistry, their passion, their longing!!!!!! and their incomparable, unique love. The connection, the stares, the grabbing. Ugh. I am a sucker for those two.

I don’t hate Archie like most of this fandom, but making him the villain in RiverVale was just perfect. I feel like with Riverdale I am constantly predicting everything and anything, and this I did not see coming. Was fun!

My favorite part was when Veronica found The Reggies dead in her living room and her reaction was nothing short of a mother scolding her dead children. Loved it. It was so ridiculous. I’ve decided to just accept that side of Riverdale.

I don’t know what else to say except that I really did enjoy this, and was kind of surprised that I did. My expectations were extremely low and I loved being caught off guard. I wish the writers did the work like this all the time.
