Sweet Mushroom Boy

Short stories of the Mc, and Mychael.

The first time that Mychael ate a fried mushroom, you were shocked, and horrified.

“Isn’t that cannibalism?”

You couldn’t help the surprised exclamation that came out of your mouth.

He snorted, and shook his head.

“No, don’t worry. This is something I eat all of the time. Mushrooms are okay to consume, as long as they aren’t poisonous.”

You let out a relieved sigh.

“That’s good, then. Hey, does that mean you can make mushroom pizza?”

Mychael gave you a blank look.

“What’s a…peeza?”

That question made you die a little inside.

“Ah, nevermind. It’s nothing.”

You had a feeling that you wouldn’t be eating pizza for the duration of your stay here.

On the second night of your impromptu stay at Mychael’s cabin, you stepped outside for some fresh air, only to see firelies floating in the sky.

The golden glow that they gave off was really pretty, and you were mesmerized by the sight.

“Now do you see why I call you firefly?”

You jumped at the sound of Mychael’s voice, turning around to see him standing just behind you.

“Huh? What do you mean?”

He took your hand, and grinned.

“You are just as beautiful as them.”

After that night, you never wanted to be called anything, but, ‘Firefly’ again.

Laying in your temporary bed, you wondered if your choice to prolong your stay at Mychael’s home was so that you could continue to look for your cat close to where you found his collar, or if it was so that you could live with him, instead of going home to an empty house.

If it was the latter reason, weren’t you just using Mychael as a security blanket? You would tell yourself it wasn’t true, but he was very gentle and kind, and you felt safe around him. It should be innocent enough, but you were essentially a free-loader who was burdening him. However, every time you tried to convince yourself to go, you would feel nothing but fear at the thought of leaving him.

These thoughts plagued you for half the night. Just when you thought that you wouldn’t be able to sleep, you heard footsteps approach the bed; Mychael must have entered the room at some point, because he stood over your prone form.

“Hey, I wanted to see if you were still awake. Um, are you okay?”

You wanted to lie so that he wouldn’t worry about you, but his presence only made you want to grab his arm, and beg him not to go. It was stupid, it was childish - but, you didn’t want to be alone right now.

Mychael’s eyes widened when you gripped his sleeve, giving him an imploring look.

“Can you please stay with me tonight?”

Quickly getting over his surprise, Mychael gave you a sweet smile.

“Of course, Firefly.”

With no hesitation, he climbed into the bed next to you, but kept you at a respectable distance.

That was fine. As long as he was close to you, you were okay.

….

Until you later awoke to find your arms wrapped around him.

How you forgot that you cuddled your pillow in your sleep, you didn’t know, but being able to hold the sleeping boy for a while was something you would cherish forever.

He thought you were adorable. How you believed you were being sneaky, and would never get caught; however, he couldn’t be upset with you for making it in secret, after you tried so hard to complete it. He could only smile fondly at your sleeping form, while you held a doll that looked like him to your chest.

When you woke up, he would definitely have to ask you how you learned to sew.
