Let’s face it, you love plants, but it can be hard to keep them alive and thriving when you have a hard time even finding the phone in your hand while on a phone call. So what can you do?

Here are 9 tips on how to care for plants when you have ADHD.

1. Less is more

As tempting as it may be to buy a cart-load of plants–trust me I know the feeling–it’s not the brightest idea to start out with a houseplant forest. Start with a few smaller and less care-intensive plants such as a ZZ plant, Snake plant, or Spider plant. Don’t let the names fool you, these babies are just as leafy and gorgeous as their more extravagant relatives.

2. Play to your strengths…and know your weaknesses

If you know that one particular aspect of plant parenting is what’s difficult for you, try finding some plants that need less of that care. If watering on a schedule is hard for you, try getting a cactus. If keeping them in a well-lit spot is difficult, try getting a plant that requires low light (or get a plant lamp). If repotting is hard for you, try getting plants that are slow growers, or try air plants, which don’t require soil at all!

3. Give them a shower

One of the more daunting things ADHD people deal with are tasks that involve a lot of tedious work. Going around and individually watering all of your plants takes time and effort–which we ADHD folks care greatly about. So here’s what you do: Take all of the plants that you can fit in your bathtub and place them at enough distance that they won’t overshadow one another. That way they can get as much water as they need. Then all you need to do is use your shower head (a removable one works best for this) and let it rain! Not only does it make the task go much quicker, but it’s also an easy clean-up.

Pro tip: When using this method I suggest that you get a filtered showerhead, as some tap water can have minerals or chemicals in it that can cause build-up on your plants or worse, cause them to start dying.

4. Use watering bulbs

If you have plants that don’t fit into your shower, or you don’t have a shower, try out watering bulbs. They come in many different colors, sizes, shapes, and materials. Here are some that are shaped like mushrooms! When the soil dries up, the bulb releases more water to keep the soil moist. Be careful with these and do your research, though, since not all plants like constantly wet soil.

5. Spray bottles, lots of them

So many plants require a certain level of humidity and this can be hard to keep up with. I always misplace my spray bottles, so I just bought a few cheap ones and placed them wherever my plants are kept. Now when my plants are looking a little dry I can give them a spritz with one of my many spray bottles. Bonus points if you get some that are a bright color to make them stand out more!

There are some plant humidifiers that can help with this problem as well. Though that can become expensive if you have a lot of plants or you have them in various locations.

6. Keep them visible

Don’t place plants too out of the way. Make sure they’re in your everyday line of sight so that you can tell right away when they aren’t doing well. One thing rings powerfully true for those of us with ADHD, “out of sight, out of mind”. So keep your plant children in sight!

7. Make a checklist

Hear me out, I know for a lot of people with ADHD lists are the bane of our existence. However, it can really help to break down your plant care in a list format. Take one or two hours to sit and write a checklist for yourself that is easy to read and understand, and that you won’t dread looking at. Split them up based on needs, like sunlight, water, humidity, fertilizer, etc.

Pro tip: Using various plant-care apps has helped lots of people manage their plants. Plus, many of these apps have free versions or free trials. Personally, writing and having a physical checklist helps me remember but do whatever works for you to keep your plants alive!

8. Ask for help

Whether you have a few plants or a lot, it can be hard to keep up with them all on your own. There are so many times I have had to ask my housemates or partner to help with my plants. Sometimes it can be hard to remember, other times I just don’t have the energy to get to all of them. So if you can, ask for help from people around you. You may need to teach them and walk them through your process, but once they’re familiar with plant care it’ll be a breeze.

Who knows, maybe you’ll spark a love for plants in them as well!

9. Don’t get discouraged

Sometimes even with our best efforts, plants will die. It doesn’t make you a bad plant parent if you weren’t able to handle a certain feisty plant or if you got one that maybe wasn’t in the best shape, to begin with. Even if the plant died because you weren’t able to keep up with the care, give yourself some grace and take it as a challenge to do better next time.

Bonus Tip: If all else fails…

Fake plants look just as good and require no care at all — aside from the occasional dusting!

I've been wanting to this but I've been too shy for too long hahahaha

I've been making verivery content for a while but I really want to improve my gif sets, and your gifs are mighty beautiful TT_TT may I ask for advice? Like do you use your laptop or your phone? Do you use photoshop??

oh feel free to ask me anything ! :D and yes of course ! gifmaking is actually fairly complex on tumblr ;-; so i'll try my best to include the basics and all the important stuff ! 

for gifmaking i use photoshop 2018 and so i use a laptop >.< i’ve seen a lot of asks where people ask about what apps gifmakers use... and to put it nicely ... there is no easy way to get nice gifs T-T the reason gifmakers on tumblr have such nice gifs, is bc there’s a lot of patience, learning, and practice involved in creating gifs for this platform... you can’t just plug in a video clip to a gif converter and expect it to spit out an hd gif for you ... unfortunately ... 

before beginning i’ll recommend this tutorial ! it’s the tutorial i used when i was first learning... and my best advice is to have lots of patience ;;;; tumblr is a hard platform to make gifs for and learning how to make nice gifs will not happen overnight 

Photoshop and other resources 

i personally downloaded ps 2018 and that works fine for me but i’ve noticed that ps cs5 or earlier tends to have a broken ‘import frames to layers’ action so i’d suggest newer versions for gifmaking ! to download i basically looked up youtube videos and checked comments to make sure the tutorials actually worked,,, but if you want you can try these posts ! (1, 2) i’m not sure if they work but usually there’s a lot of posts made on tumblr + other sites for downloading it for free ! 

About video processing programs

i also use avisynth to process my frames... this might be a really complex bit to learn and it’s not 100% necessary so i’d say you can skip over it when you’re first learning photoshop and everything but if you are interested ! basically programs like avisynth and vapoursynth reduce the video file size down to tumblr’s preferred image size without reducing the quality as much as resizing in photoshop does :o ! additionally it helps process torrents (these are the ts and tp files for live performance stages that are super hd !) but again it’s somewhat complicated i’d recommend this tutorial for download and use if you ever want to ! (vapoursynth additionally has sharpening and denoising options, but since i’ve never used vs it’d be easier to look up a vs tutorial than to ask me >.<) 

Where to get videos 

this part is CRITICAL !! for gifmaking,,, you could be the best gifmaker on this whole site but if you have a video with poor quality... no matter what,,, your gifs will not come out nicely T-T so when downloading any vlives or youtube videos, they should be at least 1080p in quality ! or as high quality as possible ! this is bc you need to reduce the file size down by a lot for tumblr’s dimensions and this means you need the best quality :o ! i typically just screenrecord videos these days bc downloading whole hour long vlives / long youtube videos is a strain on my laptop hhh ;;; for live perfo stages you should always download torrents to use but this means you need video processing programs like i said above >.< there’s a resource here to help find them ! 

these are the basic tools you’ll need hhhh there’s a lot more including sizing, sharpening, coloring, frame rate delay, exporting, saving, etc... and i don’t want to make this too long but ! 

essentially tumblr has size dimension restrictions for image files, a pixel too big or too small will cause tumblr to stretch or compress your gifs making them blurry... the dimensions are optimally:  a.) 540pixels (width) for one gif in a row b.) 268pixels (width) for two gifs in a row c.) 177pixels / 178pixels / 177pixels for three gifs in a row 

for sharpening many people use topaz etc. and i’ll point you to other tutorials if you want to use it but tbh ! i use photoshop’s smart sharpen options and those work just fine for me... (plus topaz takes forever to render and i h8 its guts so) 

coloring - okay so this is probably THE MOST time consuming part for gifs for me.... idk if you’ve noticed but lots of times, gifmakers’ gifs have pretty colors and nice lighting when you compare to the original video ! that’s bc we add layer adjustments in photoshop to make them look nice ! these include brightness, saturation, exposure, vibrancy, etc. but knowing how to use adjustments is a whole post on its own >.< there’s lots of coloring tutorials out there as well if you want me to direct you to them ! 

for frame rate delay, i use 0.05 seconds for 30fps (so your normal videos) and 0.03 for 60fps (if none of that made sense that’s okie ! it’s just basically how fast you set frames to play in your gif !)

when exporting - tumblr has a 10mb gif limit but honestly anything above 8mb starts making me anxious or takes too long to load .... so most my gifs are like ... 3-7mb only 

but yea these are just some basic tips and stuff ?? i’m sorry it took me so long to respond and it wasn’t as nicely organized as it could be... there are a lot of really good gif tutorials out there ! you just have to look a little ! if you have any additional questions tho feel free to let me know ! i just didn’t have the heart to type out the literal process i have to go through everyday when making just one gif :p i’m sure a lot of gifmakers can relate haha,,,, happy gifmaking !~

this is up to personal preference, I have one but many blogs don't. the size for the header is 640px x 360px. yet again, it can be anything you desire, you can have a photo (max size 10MB) or a gif (max size 3MB)

choose a colour pallet for your theme, i recommend coolors.co for all my colour pallet needs. make sure the colours are visible and don't interfere with your content. this will ensure that your log is easy to see. on the topic of visibility, make sure your text size is visible for those with poor vision, we really appreciate it. choose a background which contrasts your text colour, I prefer a white background with black text but as long as it is legible it will work. i personally prefer minimalist themes as they are clean and easy to navigate but as long as it isn't overly cluttered and is legible it will work.

make an into post so people can get to know you, state some facts about you, your ambitions in life and with your blog, who inspired you etc. it is an easy way for people to get to know you and make friends as people with similar interests may ask you questions or dm you

make friends, almost everyone is friendly and is always willing to help you out. don’t be afraid to message or ask people for advice. try and reply to messages and dms, you might make a friend.

participate in events, eg blog rates, blog awards, ask games etc.host your own events; same as above, giveaways (if financially viable), follow forevers. join networks such as the small studyblr network @smallstudyblrsunite. it is an easy way to make friends and have your content reach an audience

original content

what is your focus going to be? photos, masterposts, tips, or a variety. choose what you want to post as it is important in forming your niche. A rule of thumb is original ideas are the best ideas when it comes to masterposts and advice. 

how to take photos

you don't need a fancy camera, i use my phone. i strongly recommend natural lighting as it provides the best picture quality and it prevents over saturated photos caused by artificial light. choose a background that complements the object you’re taking a photo of. some people use their desk, a bench, table or their bed. i have also seen people use paper for their background. your options are limitless. you can try putting stationery or other things around your photo to make it interesting. you can include stationery, a drink, flowers, washi tape etc. make sure there aren't many/any shadows directly on top of what your photographing as it makes it harder to see.  then it comes to editing, i usually increase the brightness and/or exposure, the warmth and the highlights just a bit to make it clearer. Some apps which people use are vsco (android / iOS) instagram and photoshop. i mainly use the the photos app on iOS to edit but i sometimes use photoshop. however, all photos don’t need to be staged like this, sometimes authentic photos are just as good. at the end of the day do what feels right to you.

Missing numbers

Investment in preventive services, like children's centres and youth services, could make a real difference to children's lives - but the lack of consistently good-quality data makes it difficult frontline staff, local authorities and central government to understand what works.

That's one of the conclusions of a new report I've published with my colleague Colm and the excellent team at Nesta. We hope that as well as being useful to those in the children and young people's sector, the findings - and the recommendations - will be useful more widely to people working with and thinking about data.
