2021 Writing Round-Up
In 2021, I wrote 12 stories in 10 different fandoms and a series of metas in 4 different fandoms. Not my most prolific year, but that’s struggling with the emotional impact of a global pandemic for you.
The Fic:
She-Ra and the Princesses of Power
Same as It Ever Was - The portal machine's effects are different. Catra pulls the lever and time resets. Again and again and again. (Adora, Catra)
Sick Leave - Back when they were kids in the Horde, they used to hide when they got sick. It's a hard habit to break, but things are different now and Catra really should be in bed. (Adora/Catra)
Miraculous Ladybug
Refocus - Alya loves being a full-time superhero, but it's impossible to fight and film at the same time and her fans are starting to notice. (Alya Cesaire/Nino Lahiffe)
Alya’s Amended Guide for Internet Safety (The RPF Remix) - Alya hadn’t meant to fall down the Ladynoir fic rabbit hole. It just happened. She didn't mean to make Ladybug to read fic about herself either. That just kind of happened too. (Alya Cesaire & Marinette Dupain-Cheng)
Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts
A Post Post-Apocalyptic Romance -  Benson and Troy had fallen for each other super fast, but, between the rescue and the other rescue and all the running around with HMUFA, they’d never really gotten to know each other. Luckily,  they finally had the time to get to know each other as Benson introduced Troy to the city. (Benson/Troy)
The Boys (TV)
Maybe It’s Maybelline - Maybe she's born with it, or maybe it's Compound V. What kind of parent lets someone inject their kid with an experimental superpower serum? (January family)
DC’s Legends of Tomorrow (TV)
Army of One - Sara Lance was dead. Sara Lance was a clone. Sara Lance was going to need a minute to process. Tag to "Bishop's Gambit," episode 6.06. (Sara Lance)
Black Lightning (TV)
Cat Lover - When your wife was a deadly jungle cat, it paid to be cautious but Anissa meant to get eaten. (Anissa Pierce/Grace Choi)
Batwoman (TV 2019)
Pride - A small army of Batwomen marched at Pride. Ryan should be marching with them. (Ryan Wilder, Mary Hamilton)
Agent Carter
The Only Thing I’ve Plenty Of - The morning after a blistering row with Howard, Peggy opened her door to find Mr. Jarvis with a jewelry box and a hang-dog expression. Gifts have always been Howard's preferred love language, but sometimes Peggy just wishes he'd learn to apologize like a normal person. (Peggy Carter, Edwin Jarvis)
Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings
Kathy Takes Her Shot - Turns out their little adventure wasn't just a one-shot. Time for Kathy to step up her game. You can't hit something if you don't take aim. (Kathy Chen/Shang-Chi Xu)
Superman & Lois (TV)
Home Brew - After John Henry saves Clark, the two share a drink, but it's hard making friends with the man married to your wife. Tag to episode 1.12. (John Henry Irons & Clark Kent)
The Meta:
Julie and the Phantoms
Worldbuilding in the Real World - Julie and the Phantoms has fantastical elements but is technically set in a real place. Doing the research you don’t have to!
The Umbrella Academy (TV)
Diego Hargreeves and the Police Academy - Diego having attended, and washed out of, the Police Academy says some interesting things about his backstory. Doing the research on that so you don't have to!

WARNING! Major SPOILERS ahead for Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.
The Ten Rings have been part of the MCU since its beginning, but Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings finally reveals its full origin, along with that of its founder and leader, The Mandarin. The Ten Rings were among the first antagonists in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with one of their cells kidnapping and injuring Tony Stark before providing him with the catalyst to turn his life around and become the superhero, Iron Man. Since then, The Ten Rings have had a series of small, yet notable appearances in MCU material, but Shang-Chi is the first properly to properly depict the mysterious and deadly organization.
The Ten Rings were seemingly the villains of 2013’s Iron Man 3, but the real villains turned out to be Aldrich Killian and his corrupt think tank, AIM. Killian and AIM appropriated the iconography of The Ten Rings and had washed-up actor Trevor Slattery (Ben Kingsley) masquerade and pretend to be a warlord when he was, in fact, a fake interpretation of The Mandarin. This successfully covered up Killian’s Extremis experiments, but infuriated the actual Mandarin and caused the warlord to step out of the shadows and seek revenge. Thanks to the Marvel one-shot All Hail The King, the MCU established that the real Ten Rings were led by a man known as The Mandarin, and he was far more dangerous than the MCU had previously implied.
Related: Why SHIELD Wasn’t Aware Of & Didn’t Try To Stop The Mandarin
Shang-Chi effectively recontextualizes the terrorist group with a particular focus on their leader, The Mandarin, aka Xu Wenwu. A truly legendary figure who lives up to his seemingly exaggerated reputation, Wenwu’s humanity and complexity resulted in him being one of the MCU’s most compelling villains, especially when juxtaposed with his incredible powers and near-immortality. Although it took three phases of buildup, The Ten Rings and the true Mandarin were worth the wait, and with the Ten Rings continuing to exist by the end of Shang-Chi, the organization will continue to menace the world as they have for over a millennium.
Tumblr media
The Ten Rings began with The Mandarin, aka Xu Wenwu. Wenwu’s exact age is unknown, but he may have discovered his signature ten bracelet-like rings before the Middle Ages. Legends say that Wenwu discovered the rings in either a tomb or a crater, but in any case, they extended his lifespan, allowing him to remain in his physical and mental prime well into the 21st century. The powerful Ten Rings also provided him with fantastic physical powers, allowing him to annihilate armies of his enemies single-handedly. Wenwu’s intelligence and wisdom, augmented by his longevity, soon inspired followers with undying loyalty to their leader.
The Ten Rings quickly grew in size and influence, gaining followers across the world for entire generations. From the shadows, The Ten Rings killed, stole, and manipulated as needed to influence world history. Jackson Norriss, the Ten Rings member who kidnapped Trevor Slattery, acknowledged the scope of the organization, referring to it as a faith. The description is fitting, considering the criminal empire’s sheer age and influence, not to mention its seemingly immortal leader, with even SHIELD and The Avengers unaware of its full breadth. . The Mandarin briefly took a break from leading his criminal empire upon meeting Ying Li and starting a family with her. Her tragic death, however, sends Wenwu back into the life of a warlord, and thus The Ten Rings’ sinister machinations resumed.
Tumblr media
The Ten Rings’ first appearance in the MCU was in 2008’s Iron Man, in which an Afghanistan-based Ten Rings cell kidnapped Tony Stark. Upon building his Mark I Iron Man suit, Tony fought his way through their forces and escaped captivity. This cell’s forces were defeated once again by Iron Man, now in his advanced Mark III suit. Stark thwarted their attempts to use his stolen weaponry and rescued numerous civilians in the process. The cell was later betrayed by Obadiah Stane, who had their leader, Raza, and the rest of the cell’s operatives executed. After Iron Man, The Ten Rings had numerous minor appearances in MCU properties.

In Iron Man 2, Ivan Vanko is able to receive fake documents from a Ten Rings operative, thus allowing him to travel to Monaco and fulfil his ambition of killing Tony Stark. The fact that the Ten Rings was keen on killing Tony Stark is nothing new, however. The Ten Rings also appear in an Iron Man 2 prequel comic, along with similar promotional one-shot comics for The Avengers and Iron Man 3, where Ten Rings operatives are defeated by Black Widow and the recast War Machine, respectively. Vladimir Ranskahov, a Russian mobster featured in the well-received and critically acclaimed Marvel’s Daredevil season 1, is affiliated with The Ten Rings, as evidenced by their symbol tattooed on his arm. Similarly, a member of the Ten Rings shadowy organization is responsible for accompanying Mitchell Carson and his Hydra enforcers in 2015’s Ant-Man, before they are swiftly and soundly defeated by Scott Lang.
The Ten Rings and The Mandarin are the main antagonists of Shang-Chi, finally putting the organization at the forefront of an MCU property without any twists or turns such as those seen in Iron Man 3. In addition to revealing the leader and origins, Shang-Chi shows the Ten Rings’ most elite members, such as Razor Fist, Death Dealer, and Shang-Chi himself in his youth. The Mandarin perishes at the end of the film but is quickly replaced by his daughter, Xu Xialing. As the new leader of The Ten Rings, Xialing is now in charge of perhaps the MCU’s most dangerous and influential crime organization, and although Shang-Chi implies that his sister will dismantle their criminal operations, this remains to be seen in future MCU stories.
Tumblr media
In Marvel’s mainstream comic universe, The Mandarin and The Ten Rings have vastly different origins. The Mandarin, whose identity is unknown, discovered ten rings of alien origin, each one being worn on a different finger and granting him a different superpower. With his genius intellect and newfound superpowers, The Mandarin soon became the archnemesis of Iron Man. The Ten Rings, however, originated in the MCU but were introduced into the comics continuity in Ironheart’s comics, which starred Riri Williams, a new Marvel hero with similar armored suits to Tony Stark’s. The Ten Rings of Marvel’s comic universe are not affiliated with the classic version of The Mandarin. Given the popularity of the MCU’s Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, however, the two may be connected someday.

Mortal Kombat Ending Explained
https://ift.tt/3sJUwuD
Simon McQuoid was given an interesting challenge directing the 2021 cinematic reboot of Mortal Kombat. While it does have an R-rating to help prop it up, this is hardly the first adaptation in this universe. The story has been told in movies, comics, novels, TV shows, and even the games, which were rebooted for the sake of retelling the first few chapters in a more detailed fashion. Hell, they just came out with an animated movie a year ago that explained the first game’s plot from Scorpion’s perspective.
The new movie certainly finds its own route into the mythos, and barring some bad luck, we’re probably going to get a sequel out of this. After all, it is coming out during a nice, sweet spot where people are getting vaccinated and are equally parts confident and desperate to see a movie in theaters. When they’re bored with Godzilla and Kong’s brawling, I imagine this is the shiniest prize.
The Big Prelude
One of the surprising developments of the movie is that, while it’s called Mortal Kombat, it isn’t Mortal Kombat. It’s ABOUT Mortal Kombat. All that talk about the tournament and protecting Earth from Outworld and last chances, it’s really all setup for the next installment. It’s not so much a remake of the 1995 movie as a full-length remake of that scene on the boat where Raiden gets mad at Shang Tsung for sending Sub-Zero and Scorpion after his champions.
It’s probably more comparable to Mortal Kombat: The Journey Begins, the laughable animated movie that came out as a tie-in to the first movie. That one also showed off Sub-Zero killing Scorpion and ended with Raiden yelling at Shang Tsung for trying to screw over the heroes pre-tournament.
It also lines up a little with the Mortal Kombat novel by Jeff Rovin. The obscure 1995 release had various characters from the first game meet up in what ended up being a prequel to the story. Not only was it noticeably missing a certain movie star (more on him in a moment), but in this telling of the story, Scorpion was the ghost of Sub-Zero’s slain victim merged with the body of his son. Not quite the same as Hanzo and his descendant fighting alongside each other, but similar enough for someone like me to connect the dots.
The Return of Scorpion
Hanzo Hasashi is killed in the opening scene but his baby daughter survives under Raiden’s watch. We learn that a prophecy claims that his bloodline will one day unite a new group of heroes to prevent Outworld from winning their tenth Mortal Kombat in a row. Eventually, this is revealed to be our protagonist Cole Young, Hanzo’s descendant. This prophecy ends up being more literal than expected in the final battle against Sub-Zero as Cole is stabbed with Hanzo’s iconic kunai and it magically allows Hanzo to return from the Netherrealm (Hell) to exact his revenge on Sub-Zero.
After succeeding in getting his vengeance, Scorpion shows respect to Cole and vanishes. Presumably, he’s returned to the Netherrealm to he can rest as well as anyone can in a world of pain and fire.
We obviously haven’t seen the last of him. In the games, Scorpion returned once again due to what appeared to be the resurrection of Sub-Zero. It ended up being Bi-Han’s younger brother, Kuai Liang, who was actually a good person and ended up reforming the Lin Kuei clan for the better. Scorpion became rivals with this Sub-Zero but later made peace with him, their clans fighting alongside each other against evil threats.

By Matthew Byrd
This is where things get interesting because in the movie’s continuity, Hanzo existed centuries ago instead of in the present. Bi-Han never aged during that time, presumably due to some magical reward of Shang Tsung’s. There would be no reason for him to have a brother taking his spot.
On the other hand, giving Sub-Zero his own Cole Young counterpart would make plenty of sense. Perhaps Kuai Liang will appear in the sequel as Sub-Zero’s conflicted descendant, having to decide between the duties of blood and virtue.
The Rise of Noob Saibot?
During Shang Tsung’s final speech, he mentions how death is itself like a portal. He then teleports the corpses of Sub-Zero and Goro into Outworld. He could have left them to rot, but he appears to have plans for them.
For fans of Mortal Kombat lore, the follow-up for Sub-Zero makes enough sense. In the games, Bi-Han went under his own Scorpion-like transformation after death. He returned as the all-black shadow assassin Noob Saibot, acting as a more warped and sinister version of his human self. Noob was also closely aligned with Quan Chi, Scorpion’s main nemesis and former handler, so we’ll see if that guy pops up down the line.
As for Goro, there’s no real instance in the games of him being resurrected, but it’s not like this movie doesn’t take liberties as is. Goro can have a little necromancy, as a treat.
The Replacements
Barring resurrections, Shang Tsung has lost Reptile, Goro, Sub-Zero, Kabal, Nitara, Reiko, Mileena, and Kano. He notes that these soldiers can be easily replaced. That opens up a lot of possibilities for who could pop up in a sequel. Perhaps Ermac? Skarlet? Erron Black? You could easily put money on Baraka.
Raiden also tasks the surviving heroes with searching for other champions for the tournament. Unlike the villains, there aren’t too many Earthrealm heroes to choose from. The blind swordsman Kenshi is very likely to join the crew. Nightwolf was also briefly referenced on Sonya and Jax’s wall of research, so don’t be surprised if he’s on the team.
Considering Mileena is a grotesque clone of her “sister” Kitana, you should expect Sisi Stringer show up in the sequel in a more heroic role.
Johnny Cage Cliffhanger
The money shot comes in the last scene. Cole quits his low-level MMA lifestyle and announces that he’s going to Hollywood. As he leaves the gym, we see a poster for Citizen Cage with the tagline “Fight For Your Rights.” The movie stars Johnny Cage (complete with large “CAGE” belt buckle), who we only see from the chest down due to the fact that the character hasn’t been cast yet.
Since the movie’s cast was first announced, fans have noted the blatant lack of Johnny Cage. Not only was Linden Ashby’s portrayal one of the most popular parts of the original movie, but Johnny’s the only character from the original game to not appear in this movie. A prominent theory before the movie’s release was that Cole was going to be Johnny all along and change his name at the end of the film.
But no, Johnny Cage is sequel bait and I’m right there chomping on the hook.
cnx.cmd.push(function() { cnx({ playerId: "106e33c0-3911-473c-b599-b1426db57530", }).render("0270c398a82f44f49c23c16122516796"); });
Jonathan Carlton is a talented martial artist who used his skill to become a popular action star under the name Johnny Cage. Due to his outrageous skill and moves, he’s been accused of being a fraud who uses camera tricks and stunt doubles to pull off his fight sequences. He initially entered the Mortal Kombat tournament because he was under the impression it would revitalize his career and prove his legitimacy, not quite understanding the severity or even secrecy of the event.
Mostly portrayed as comic relief and the audience’s POV character, Johnny became a regular in the Mortal Kombat series. When they rebooted the games’ story, it was revealed that in case of Liu Kang’s death, Johnny was a back-up “chosen one.” He’s the descendant of a cult of warriors dedicated to making the most badass offspring possible capable of slaying gods.
Funny enough, when Street Fighter did its cinematic reboot with Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li, it also ended with a sequel hook about an upcoming fighting tournament and a quest to look up a series staple (in that case Ryu). I can’t help but feel that Mortal Kombat will be a little more successful in following up on its cliffhanger.
Now let’s see who they can get to fill those sunglasses.

My thoughts:
It’s all so amazing! Can you believe that we are getting 3 movies and 4 shows in 2021? It’s crazy. And those titles! Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Thor : Love and Thunder. Perfection! I know that there is a possibility that the titles may change but I hope that they won’t. The logos will probably change though as they did before. But still. Those announcements are so very marvelous 😍. Oh I am waiting for D23 even more!

September!!! and 3/3 passed!!!
hiya guys, gals, and pals! wherever you are i hope you're happy, healthy, and loved :D
i'm here for an update and yes, yes, i know this is a very late/mid of the month September update but i purposely held back an update just so i can deliver all the good news in one post! hehehe
so first up, on September 9th i finished ALL of my requirements! yes, the root canal treatment and the fixed partial prosthetics! i remember when me and Vanesha (the best partner ever we all know that, right) greeted goodbye to our patient after inserting his 'new' teeth in, we literally collapsed on the floor of the negative room clinic, still in full third level PPE, just hugging each other in silence T___T so overwhelmed with feels, our hard work and clinical journey since May 2019 finally ended that day in September 2021... all those sweat, blood, tears we exerted to make it all to this very day... our very last patient, very last case, very last negative room clinic schedule, very last requirement. i can't believe we did it. WE DID IT!!!!!
today, September 13th i finally got the result of my Oral Surgery exam: i passed!!! this marks 13/14 departments exams i've passed... i'm so proud of myself, i still remember the old days of me wondering will i ever survive the clinical years aka the jungle of dental med school, but here i am now, so close to finishing everything T____T i can't upload a memento here since my prof announced it verbally, but i remember i was shaking so much when she said i passed with good scores :,) as always super grateful to be able to pass this exam in my first shot, though still sad seeing lots of my friends didn't pass in one go and have to redo it all over again :(
so now i'm left with Prosthodontics exam (the September exam period is somehow pushed back to undefined dates) but i'm readying myself for it already. also for November, if it's truly my time, i'll go for the national dentist competency exam. i'm gonna say this again and again, but it feels surreal to be in this position i am right now. maybe for you my dear readers it's not that relatable, but if you were in my shoes you'd understand haha it's really a battle to be right here. i talked with my mum and dad about me as in me since elementary school until now, looking back at all the decisions we made that lead to this very moment. i used to frown at the way my parents brought me up, but as i grow older and felt the harsh jagged lines of reality, the life lessons they taught became the very foundations of my successes today.
the hardships i went, the perseverance i had... i mean even for the last two requirements it didn't go that smooth haha for my root canal treatment i had to do THREE visits instead of two, because unexpectedly my assistant fainted midway of the treatment!? how in the world is that even happening—her N95 mask was too tight so she had a brief case of hypoxia, lack of oxygen concentration in the brain—but i mean it's such a rare case that no one saw it coming :,) but i learned a lot from that, got to be supervised by a very meticulous yet caring professor on my third visit. for the fixed partial prosthetics, me and Vanesha, at first we were SO hopeless, because our assigned professor didn't even bother to reply to our messages!? T___T but then miracle happened: after numerous Tahajood 'appointments' she somehow replied to my message, i confided in her how we really need to finish our last requirement, and she decided to help us by speeding up the treatment plan into just two visits (normally three to five)! but that's not even the only drama, we somehow mistook a step in the treatment that almost got us starting all over again but thank God we managed to salvage and averted the crisis T___T so here we are now, done with the reqs. Alhamdulillah...
this is quite funny in a way but: i applied to be an associate assistant for my profs in Oral Pathology department and i got accepted HEHEHE i know it's super late because i'm already at my last year but i'm super happy i got to interact with 3rd semester pre-clinical students, supervising their exams and grading their assignments. i also get paid :P that's the major motivation on taking the job tbh hahaha i love my life rn
i got my 3rd vax shot, a booster one, and it’s Moderna! i’m fine 7 hours after the injection but at night i got high fever huhu it went up until 39,2 C i was so worried! then i took a high concentrated paracetamol and it died down after two days :,) though it left me with no appetite, severe headache, and nausea... but i’m fine now! all of you please get vaxxed NOW and keep everyone safe ok ;)
more on the fun stuff: so Cristiano Ronaldo is back as a Manchester United player and last week we won 4-1 to Newcastle!!! what a scene... in tennis, for the US Open 2021 we have a major upset? turmoil? but the champions are the new pals, so proud of Emma Raducanu, she brought it home!!!
ALSO, it's 32 DAYS to coldplay's new album Music of the Spheres out on October 15th!!! today they just announced the collaboration with BTS! i'm so happy this is gonna be super big, everyone's gonna love it! it's gonna be a new hit song i'm sure.

First Take: Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings - forget everything you ever knew about the MCU
SYNOPSIS: Shang-Chi, the master of unarmed weaponry-based Kung Fu, is forced to confront his past after being drawn into the Ten Rings organization.
And here we go for real. After the prequel of Black Widow, we have brand new characters, stories, and a whole new Phase to get stuck into within the Marvel Cinematic Universe - and for us here in England, it is the first Marvel film back at full capacity. Having been fast tracked for development, shut down at the height of the Covid pandemic (only finishing the shoot this time last year), and controversially avoiding the Premier Access debacle, Shang-Chi has finally arrived - and it is one of the stronger Marvel origin stories.
youtube
As is the case with the newer movies, independent director Destin Daniel Cretton, the man behind Short Term 12 and Just Mercy, has been brought into the Marvel fold to helm a very well put together 2 hour 14 minute movie which has plenty of inspired action, a lot of backstory which will come in handy later down the road, and importantly, an understanding of not only the source material, but the cultures which inspired it, something which is in evident in the script he, Dave Callaham and Andrew Lanham have put together - while it suffers the usual ‘origin story’ predictability issues, the action alone is worth the price of the ticket. It’s shot brilliantly by DOP legend Bill Pope, and the score from Joel P West comes in at just the right points. Oh, and before I forget, The Eagles’ Hotel California blares out over the end credits. Any film that has the courage to pay for those rights gets an extra few brownie points- it is not an easy song to secure.
Tumblr media
Performances on this film are also a strong point, with Simu Liu nailing it, Awkwafina being an absolute scene stealer, Tony Leung having an absolute field day (to say more would spoil the film), and a supporting cast which includes Michelle Yeoh, Ben Kingsley (returning as Trevor Slattery), a brief cameo from Benedict Wong (again, to say more about how he is involved would spoil the film), and Florian Munteanu, best known as being Drago in Creed II. But one person I do have to mention, particularly with this being one of his last films before his death last month, is the stunt co-ordinator Brad Allan. A member of no less than Jackie Chan’s stunt team, any film Allan worked on always had some incredibly complex stunt work that looked so easy - and it is a big loss for the Marvel family. His last film will release in December (The King’s Man), but Marvel Studios, in their classy best, dedicated Shang-Chi to him.
THE VERDICT
Die-hard MCU fans will absolutely love this film, and the direction Phase 4 appears to be heading in thanks to two big post-credits scenes, and as a standalone film, it works just as well. If this movie does well stateside, our industry is on its way to bouncing back after two rough years - and if last night across English cinemas was anything to go by, this is going to be a big box office weekend.
RATING: 4/5

off the rack #1149
Monday, January 30, 2017
It's the Chinese Year of the Rooster folks and there's a cock in the White House. We are living in interesting times indeed. I am trying my best not to get riled up by the d-bag but it's difficult. The empathy I feel for others means I cannot ignore the affect the changes have on everybody. I just hope we all get through these difficult times relatively unscathed.
I'm going to have a fun Sunday on February 5. I'll be at the Walkley Arena for the Capital Trade Show where my partner Chris and I will be flogging old comic books. Then it's Super Bowl 51 with two gun slinging quarterbacks. I am cheering for a high scoring affair.
Civil War II: The Oath #1 - Nick Spencer (writer) Rod Reis, Raffaele Ienco, Szymon Kudranski & Dono Sanchez-Almara (art) VC's Chris Eliopoulos (letters). Didn't see that coming. While it makes sense to appoint Captain America as the new Director of S.H.I.E.L.D. (again) the surprise is that I don't think it's Steve Rogers under the mask. I don't particularly like the new political landscape that the Marvel U is headed towards but it does make for some easy enemies for the good guys to fight with. Nick put in a lot of rah, rah patriotism in this book so it was a tough slog trying to get through it but the payoff at the end is worth it.
Kamandi Challenge #1 - Part One: Dan Didio (writer) Keith Giffen (pencils) Scott Koblish (inks) Hi-Fi (colours) Clem Robins (letters) Part Two: Dan Abnett (writer) Dale Eaglesham (art) Hi-Fi (colours) Clem Robins (letters). He's the last boy on Earth and he's going on a wild adventure to find his parents. One of Jack Kirby's creations is getting a round robin of comic book creators to excite fans like never before. Each part of the story will be done by a different team that will end with a cliffhanger that the next team must find a way to resolve. I have a nagging feeling that this stunt has been done before but I can't remember when so I'm going to tag along to see who does what. I'm not a fan of Kamandi but I want to see who all are going to be involved on the creative side.
Loose Ends #1 - Jason Latour (writer) Chris Brunner (art) Rico Renzi (colours). The cover says that this 4-issue mini is a southern crime romance. They got that right. We're looking at a trailer dwelling war vet whose friend gets him mixed up in running drugs. You can expect that the vet and the friend get into a heap of trouble and they do. I like how Sonny and Rej each wind up where they do at the end of this first issue so you bet I'm going to keep reading. Not much romance so far but I'm sure Jason will get to that.
Star Wars #27 - Jason Aaron (writer) Salvador Larroca (art) Edgar Delgado (colours) VC's Clayton Cowles (letters). Yay Yoda. Root for him I will.
Batgirl #7 - Hope Larson (writer) Chris Wildgoose (art) Mat Lopes (colours) Deron Bennett (letters). Part 1 of "Son of Penguin" introduces Ethan Cobblepot and I don't care if there is no reference to him anywhere else in the DCU because he's going to be a great adversary for Barbara Gordon. I like how Chris draws her older than Rafael Albuquerque did. This is going to be fun.
Briggs Land #6 - Brian Wood (writer) Mack Chater (art) Lee Loughridge & Jeremy Colwell (colours) Nate Piekos (letters). I really like Grace Briggs. The risks that she is taking will hopefully keep her people safe. Brian has crafted a story fit for cable TV.
Totally Awesome Hulk #15 - Greg Pak (writer) Mahmud Asrar (art) Nolan Woodward (colours) VC's Cory Petit (letters). Greg continues to feature heroes of the Asian persuasion in this story about Amadeus hanging out with Jake Oh, Kamala Khan, Cindy Moon, Shang-Chi, and Jimmy Woo. It does play on some stereotypes but I think it's okay because they're true for these guys.
Odyssey of the Amazons #1 - Kevin Grevioux (writer) Ryan Benjamin (pencils) Richard Friend (inks) Tony Washington & Tony Avina (colours) Saida Temofonte (letters). This 6-issue mini has a lot of women but not a wonder one in sight. Kevin features Diana's sister Amazons in a tale worthy of Homer. If you like classic sword and sorcery, you'll like this.
Dead Inside #2 - John Arcudi (writer) Tony Fejzula (art) Andre May (colours) Joe Sabino (letters). The plot thickens like congealed blood and murder suspects start to emerge. Linda has plenty to deal with inside the prison but she's surprised when she gets home after work by a sight I did not expect to see. This mystery is crazy good.
Inhumans vs. X-Men #3 - Charles Soule & Jeff Lemire (writer) Javier Garron (art) Andres Mossa & Jay David Ramos (colours) VC's Clayton Cowles (letters). There are three more issue to this mini but it seems to me that Charles and Jeff have already come up with a solution to the Terrigen cloud that would end the war. The mutant Forge has built a machine that can collect the Terrigen gas and compress it into a solid in this issue. Wouldn't that solve the problem of the gas killing the mutants? Works for me.
Justice League vs. Suicide Squad #6 - Joshua Williamson (writer) Howard Porter (art) Alex Sinclair (colours) Rob Leigh (letters). All is well that ends well. Both teams join forces to defeat Eclipso and Max Lord is at the mercy of Amanda Waller. Batman sees the light and gathers another team together to fight evil forces. Get ready for a new Justice League of America #1 hitting the racks on February 22. DC is sure spreading Bats pretty thin these days.
Skybourne #3 - Frank Cho (writer & artist) Marcio Menyz (colours) Ed Dukeshire (letters). The identity of the bad guy was a nice surprise. I like Frank's comic books because they're simple stories about good versus evil that are beautifully drawn.
Hulk #2 - Mariko Tamaki (writer) Nico Leon & Dalibor Talajic (art) Matt Milla (colours) VC's Cory Petit (letters). Waiting for Jennifer to Hulk out is one of the things I like about the new book. She has a lot more self control than I have. The scary thing about the eventuality of her losing control is that this new Hulk will be an uncontrollable creature of rage but we'll have to wait and see what happens. Until then I'm enjoying Jen's life so far.
Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps #13 - Robert Venditti (writer) V Ken Marion (pencils) Paul Neary & Dexter Vines (inks) Alex Sollazzo (colours) Dave Sharpe (letters). Now that the planet Xudar has been saved, what now? It's time for a bedtime story that's what. This is a nice interlude issue before we launch into the next story. I've been enjoying this team book now that my loyalty to the Avengers has waned. We'll see if Robert can keep me hooked with his next adventure.
Saga #42 - Brian K. Vaughn (writer) Fiona Staples (art) Fonografiks (letters). And fade to black. No, really. It's hiatus time again but this issue didn't leaving me screaming profanities about the long wait until the next issue hits the racks. There is a new character introduced who I will be very interested to find out more about.
Doctor Strange #16 - Jason Aaron (writer) Chris Bachalo with Cory Smith (art) Al Vey, John Livesay, Victor Olazaba, &  Tim Townsend (inks) Antonio Fabela & Java Tartaglia with Chris Bachalo (colours) VC's Cory Petit (letters). Dormammu is finally going to get his chance to kill Doctor Strange after he has been weakened by his fight with the Empirikul. Jason does find a neat way to save Stephen however. The next bit of nastiness involves someone close to the Doc. Oboy.
Wonder Woman #15 - Greg Rucka (writer) Liam Sharp (art) Laura Martin (colours) Jodi Wynne (letters). Part 1 of "The Truth" finds Diana in a mental hospital. How she got there has yet to be explained but I'm sure I can handle it.
Punisher #8 - Becky Cloonan (writer) Laura Braga with Iolanda Zanfardino (art) Frank Martin (colours) VC's Cory Petit (letters). That little old lady toting the double barrelled shotgun from last issue is named Ethel. She looks scary but she's not what you think. The change in art took some getting used to but it isn't bad enough to make me bench this book. I do have a couple of complaints though. If you're going to call a motorcycle a Harley, don't show what looks like a BMW logo on the gas tank. Also, draw the bad guy from the chest up when Frank says that he opened up his guts, not a full body shot that clearly shows an abdomen without any wounds at all. I don't know if the art had to be rushed after Steve Dillon passed away unexpectedly but that's just shoddy editing.
Action Comics #972 - Dan Jurgens (writer) Stephen Segovia (pencils) Art Thibert (inks) Ulises Arreola (colours) Rob Leigh (letters). Trust Dan to come up with a non-violent way to stop Lex from being executed by the bad guys. It also served to show what possible futures are in store for this new Superman. DC has managed to revive my interest in this iconic character.
Daredevil #16 - Charles Soule (writer) Goran Sudzuka (art) Matt Milla (colours) VC's Clayton Cowles (letters). We find out why Daredevil put out a hit on himself to lure out Bullseye. There's some soul searching this issue which leads into the next storyline. I liked how Charles sets it up.
Detective Comics #949 - James Tynion IV & Marguerite Bennett (writers) Ben Oliver & Szymon Kudranski (art) Ben Oliver, Gabe Eltaeb & Hi-Fi (colours) Marilyn Patrizio (letters). The finale of "Batwoman Begins" is a very good prelude to Batwoman's solo book which hits the racks on February 15. It looks like James and Marguerite are going to have a Raymond Reddington and Agent Keen thing going on between Kate and her dad. That's got me interested.
Infamous Iron Man #4 - Brian Michael Bendis (writer) Alex Maleev (art) Matt Hollingsworth (colours) VC's Clayton Cowles (letters). Brian must have a thing for mother and son stories. He did it in International Iron Man where he introduced Tony's biological mother. Now he's showing us Victor's mom. I really do believe that Doom has reformed and I hope he stays a good guy.
Spider-Man/Deadpool: Monsters Unleashed - Joshua Corin (writer) Tigh Walker (art) Rachelle Rosenberg (colours) VC's Joe Sabino (letters). The boys save Toronto eh.
Thanos #3 - Jeff Lemire (writer) Mike Deodato (art) Frank Martin (colours) VC's Clayton Cowles (letters). It's the Imperial Guard of the Shi'ar versus Thanos. A perfect opportunity to give a history lesson on the life of the Mad Titan.
Spider-Woman #15 - Dennis Hopeless (writer) Veronica Fish (art) Rachelle Rosenberg (colours) VC's Travis Lanham (letters). Jessica subdues the new Porcupine and finds out who put the hit out on her friend Roger. Now she's gunning for the Hobgoblin but he's protected by an army of super villains. I hope little Gerry doesn't become an orphan.

Shang-Chi and The Legend of the Ten Rings director Destin Daniel Cretton says Sir Ben Kingsley decided to appear in the film after having an imaginary conversation with his Iron Man 3 character. In Iron Man 3, Kingsley plays the belligerent Trevor Slattery, an out-of-work actor employed by Aldrich Killian (Guy Pearce) to pose as a stereotypical version of “The Mandarin” to mask illegal, Extremis-related activities as terrorist attacks. In a one-shot included with the home release of Thor: The Dark World, “All Hail the King,” it is revealed that the real leader of the Ten Rings organization is unhappy with Slattery’s imitation of him.
On top of featuring Marvel Studios’ first Asian lead, the 25th film to take place within the Marvel Cinematic Universe stars a predominately Asian and Asian-American cast, including Simu Liu, Tony Leung, Awkwafina, Michelle Yeoh, Benedict Wong, Fala Chen, and Meng’er Zhang. The film finally introduces Marvel’s Master of Kung Fu, Shang-Chi (Liu), and his father, Xu Wenwu (Leung): the real Mandarin. Despite its status as a relatively standalone origin film, Shang-Chi has subtle connections to the larger MCU, including references to the Blip and an appearance by Trevor Slattery himself as a prisoner of Wenwu.
Related: Trevor Slattery’s MCU Future After Shang-Chi
In an interview with Variety, Cretton discussed including Kingsley in his movie as a way of connecting it to the larger MCU. When the director called Kingsley to talk about reprising the role of Slattery, the actor surprised Cretton by having a full-blown conversation with himself as the Iron Man 3 character. According to Cretton, during their phone conversation, Kingsley would ask something and then hold the phone away from his mouth to make it sound like Slattery was shouting back from nearby. Read Cretton’s full explanation below:
“That first conversation ended with Sir Ben Kingsley shouting to somebody from the other room,” Cretton said. “This is after about an hour of wondering if Sir Ben is going to do our movie. Trevor starts shouting from the other room, ‘Who are you talking to?’ ‘I’m talking to Destin.’ ‘Who’s Destin?’ ‘Oh, he’s directing the new Marvel movie. They want you to be in it.’ ‘They want me to be in it?! When do we start?!’ ‘Uh, I don’t know, we haven’t gotten into that yet.’ It went on for about two minutes,” laughed Cretton. “By the end, he just said, ‘Thank you for the chat. Trevor is very excited, but I’ll talk to you later.’”
Tumblr media
Kingsley’s role in Shang-Chi serves a purpose beyond comedic relief. Slattery’s time sobering up as a Shakespearean fool imprisoned in Wenwu’s compound afforded him the uncanny ability to communicate with a creature from Ta Lo, where the film’s third act takes place. In addition to moving the plot forward, Slattery’s presence (and verbal apology) in the film adds another layer to Shang-Chi’s deconstruction of stereotypes. In the original comics, Shang-Chi’s father is Fu Manchu, a character notorious for its depiction of offensive stereotypes. The source material’s version of The Mandarin is also a racist caricature. In fact, Iron Man 3 writer and director Shane Black has said he wrote Slattery to avoid featuring Fu Manchu in the film. Thankfully, Cretton and co-writer Dave Callaham’s Wenwu subverts expectations, retcons Iron Man 3’s Mandarin, and gives audiences an effective MCU villain.
Cretton went on to talk about how much both he and Kingsley enjoyed the Oscar-winner’s return in Shang-Chi. As evident by Cretton’s story, Kingsley loves his craft even when he’s not on stage or camera. Even though Slattery isn’t necessarily a major character in Shang-Chi, Kingsley wanted to make sure his character felt layered and genuine. If there’s one thing that can be said about Shang-Chi, it is that it’s honest — from the characters, to the action sequences and fight choreography (which is performed by most of the actual cast). That genuineness seems to resonating with audiences, too. Early reviews for the film are overwhelmingly positive, and Shang-Chi and The Legend of the Ten Rings is already breaking box office records in a time when many thought the COVID-19 pandemic would stand in its way.

Shang-Chi and The Legend of the Ten Rings is a movie Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige has been wanting to make ever since he joined the company. Only the second movie to release as part of the MCU’s Phase 4, Shang-Chi is the first film to get a theater-only release, seeing as Black Widow also debuted on Disney+ through the service’s Premier Access.
Not only is Shang-Chi the first Asian-led Marvel superhero film, but its martial arts also introduces a new part of the franchise to audiences, one that had only been glimpsed on TV with Iron Fist. So far, MCU fans have seen gods, aliens, monsters, and wizards, with some heroes exhibiting unique fighting skills; however, nothing has been on the same level as Shang-Chi‘s martial arts. And now, Marvel can explore this new corner of the MCU throughout Phase 4, 5, and beyond.

Screen Rant spoke to Kevin Feige about Shang-Chi ahead of the film’s release about what the movie would’ve looked like had it been released years ago and where the story goes next.
WARNING: This interview contains spoilers for Shang-Chi.
Screen Rant: From what we know, Shang-Chi had been in development, or at least planned, for a very, very long time, but obviously it didn’t happen for a long time. So what do you think this film would’ve looked like had it been released all those years ago?
Kevin Feige: I don’t know. We had a wish list and we still do – characters and stories that we’d love to bring to the screen – and Shang-Chi had been on that list for as long as I’ve been at Marvel, as were lots of other characters that we’ve now since brought to screen. I think it would’ve been different. It’s a good question, actually – a ‘what if’ scenario that is interesting to think about. But I don’t know is the answer, because this movie is the result of the people that made it. Would Destin [Daniel Cretton] have been able to make the movie? Would Simu [Liu] have starred in the movie if we made it 10 years ago? Of course not. So, like all of our movies, I’m lucky enough and very thankful that we made the movie when we did, so we could make it with the people that we did.
With this film – obviously, Black Panther was a massive success and Captain Marvel was a massive success – so what are your hopes with Shang-Chi in terms of cultural impact and franchise impact?
Kevin Feige: I have the same hopes and dreams for this movie that I have for all of our movies. And I feel very good by the initial response from people who’ve seen the movie at press screenings, at the premiere – we did some fan screenings yesterday, and so far, so good with the response to what Destin has done.
Tumblr media
In this, Ben Kingsley’s Trevor Slattery plays a bigger role than I would’ve expected – I thought it would’ve just been a cameo. Was that a conscious effort to try to… not necessarily to redeem him, but give him more of a shining light from who he was and not playing a role as the Mandarin?
Kevin Feige: Yeah, it was an idea early on as we were developing this incarnation of the story for Shang-Chi, that the Ten Rings has a history going back to the very beginning of the MCU. And we thought it would be a fun way to acknowledge the twist in Iron Man 3, the fake version of the Ten Rings leader when we meet the actual leader of the Ten Rings, which is his father, Wenwu, in this. And if you get the opportunity to continue working with Sir Ben Kingsley, you want to find every opportunity to do that.
To jump forward to the credits scene; it’s a pretty big credits scene – you have Captain Marvel and you have Bruce Banner there. But he’s Banner, not Smart Hulk…
Kevin Feige: Interesting… And his arm is in a sling. He’s Banner, and his arm is in a sling, if you noticed that.
I did!
Kevin Feige: You’re the first person to ask me that question, by the way. I know you won’t talk about it until after the movie comes out. But you are the first person to pick up on that.
Really? On Banner being Banner?
Kevin Feige: Since the movie’s been screened, yes.
So why is he back to being in a human form? Does this have anything to do with his future in She-Hulk?
Kevin Feige: All good questions, sir. All very good, very observant questions. …You will find out why that is the case. And thank you for noticing. Mark Ruffalo thanks you for noticing.
To go back to the beginning of the film with Wenwu; the Ta Lo village decided not to allow him in. In my mind, with What If…? going on, I think that would be a perfect idea of what if they did allow him into their village. Like, how would that have changed him and his story? Is that something you think could be told in a What If…? season 2 or 3?
Kevin Feige: Another good question. You’re kind of low-key – but the questions are very on-point and I’m very impressed. But… that’s the fun thing about having the What If…? series now; we can explore questions just like that. And I will say, just as season 1 is tapping into films and storylines from the MCU that you’ve seen up to this point, season 2 will definitely incorporate movies from Phase 4. So I don’t want to say any more than that, but yet again, another very good question, sir.
Tumblr media
Spinning off of that, a lot of the stories being told on Disney+, particularly, are about the Multiverse. While Shang-Chi has an alternate dimension, the story is still quite grounded and personal. So where do you see his story falling in the grand scheme of things going forward?
Kevin Feige: I think, as with every Marvel superhero that we bring into the MCU, all of them are important and integral in the future, and their characters are what shape the future of the MCU. And now that people have met and seen the origin of Shang-Chi, it is safe to say he will have a great influence on the future. The notion of dimensions and Ta-Lo, that again is the gift of the Marvel Comics – that you have not just other planets, not just other dimensions, but other universes, other realities, and it’s a fun to be at a point now, 25 movies in, 6 or 7 TV series in that we’ve shot, that we’re able to really start playing with the full canvas that the comics have brought to us.
Now that Shang-Chi has come out and introduced this whole new corner of martial arts into the franchise, where do you see things going next – not just with new Shang-Chi stories, but with other characters?
Kevin Feige: You know, I think the sky’s the limit on the type of characters that we can bring to the screens. What I’m most excited about is that we’ve finally been able to tell the story of Shang-Chi, and that audiences are finally going to be able to meet not just Simu’s portrayal of Shang-Chi but the entire cast of characters, all of whom I think are fascinating and audiences will I hope – I think – will want to see more of.
Katy and Shang-Chi’s friendship – everything they say and do throughout the film – felt very relatable in a way that other superhero movies and even other Marvel movies just haven’t been able to do, because although he has these powers, he’s a very grounded character. Even the bit with Katy’s grandmother asking when they’ll get married; that’s something that I, as a minority, have experienced from my own family. Was there a concerted effort in developing that in this film or did it come more naturally?
Kevin Feige: I think both, but I think that’s primarily what our screenwriters, with Destin who’s a screenwriter and David Callaham, who was the first writer to start building the story for us, wanted to bring those personal elements into the story. And it’s been remarkable in screenings. At that very moment with the grandmother, you can hear the audience relate to that and respond to that. So I do think it was very much a conscious effort on Dave and Destin’s part to bring that to the screen, and I hope with all Marvel heroes, it is their humanity that makes them relatable. Shang-Chi is probably a more universal story than a lot of them because of the family element and because of the cultural specificity in which that family exists.
At the very end of the film, you have the card that says the Ten Rings will return, not Shang-Chi will return. What was the reason for that?
Kevin Feige: To be honest with you, I think the intention of the first tag makes it very clear that Shang-Chi will return, so we didn’t have to say it again. The end of that second tag was more about the organization itself, the Ten Rings, which it seems, over the course of the movie, that it’s been dismantled and you learn otherwise in that spoiler-filled tag. But that was the idea; one, we just didn’t want to put a card… (Did we even talk about that, Jonathan? We didn’t even talk about putting in a card for both.) But we think that it’s very clear after that first tag that Shang-Chi is returning.
