14 again, but this time “Meat or Candy” interpreted as narrative philosophies rather than the halves of the epilogues

aghhh this is so mean!!! i've always read the meat/candy dichotomy as sides of the same coin rather than two discrete narrative philosophies, and homestuck itself as a structural exploration of various ways to balance/unbalance the split. picking between one or the other is like picking between air & water!

i certainly write godfeels with an eye towards finding a balance. serious drama needs to be offset by goofy comedy, cool anime fight scenes need to be offset by cursed bullshit or drydick exposition. chapter 8 especially is meant to be a tonal roller coaster. 'the shadows left behind' for instance is an almost 40,000 word long section about a depressed idea slowly clawing back personhood from their out of control death drive. there's murder attempts, there's suicide attempts, there's gore, there's psychological torture-- it's some of the heaviest shit i've ever written! and yet that same chapter also contains some of the funniest shit i've ever written. a story like this NEEDS that kind of variation to maintain reader interest, otherwise you get bogged down in seriousness or get so sucked up into lightheartedness that you lose all sense of substance.

like that's very much the reason ch8 ends with an epilogue full of jargon and exposition and obtuse metaphysics. i knew, at the close of ch8 act 5, that we were finally opening the door to what i consider The Good Shit. but it wouldn't be right to jump straight from that endpoint to where 3.2A begins. from an archival reading perspective, you need a palate cleanser to pull you back out from the thick of it and re-examine everything that just occurred from the outside. within the rest of ch8 there is a constant ebb and flow between meat tendencies and candy tendencies; what the epilogue reveals is that it was all candy in some sense, because it was functionally one extremely long action scene. it does this by serving as the meaty parallel, something much closer in tone and purpose to the author-insert sections of homestuck proper. it's meant to feel tedious and tantalizing at the same time, something you have to eat slowly and chew on to properly digest after the insane fast pace of [s] saturday. and even the epilogue swings back and forth between funny and serious! it's meat/candy all the way down!!

i suppose like any red-blooded american of the toonami generation, i have the most fun as a writer when i'm indulging myself in the candy of dumb anime bullshit. most of 'the shadows left behind' was back-constructed from the scene where Dare's "body" gets impaled and cut to shreds by X and they just keep walking towards it anyway. especially that moment where X tries to swallow them a second time, and Dare grabs it by the jaws and throws it off-- that whole sequence popped into my head and suddenly it clicked for me, oh shit, Dare is the secret shonen anime protagonist of godfeels! everything beforehand was a prelude to that moment when June really sees Dare for the first time, asks if they're real, and they shout defiantly, YES!!!

probably every writer does this to an extent, where they write towards some cool/interesting shit they can't get out of their head. there's a temptation to just go there, just get to the good stuff, because ultimately it's what you're there for and you KNOW the audience is gonna lap it up. but if you give in to that temptation and just string together all those keystone moments with bare-minimum bridging material, you paradoxically rob those moments of all their meaning and energy. did 'the shadows left behind' need to be 40,000 words long in one go? probably not. but i don't think the final culmination of that story would have hit nearly as hard otherwise.

you need meat to sell the candy. i wanted 3.2 A1 for instance to be much shorter than it wound up being, because god damn it i want to get to The Good Shit already!! but i realized very quickly that everything i wanted to get to would be poorly served by a cast of characters whose reasons for participating are murky at best. so i decided to invest in more of those meaty chapters between jade and various characters, which themselves needed their own fluctuating balance between meat tendencies and candy tendencies. from a structural standpoint it sort of becomes a meat/candy fractal, as each subdivision of each narrative unit has to maintain the same relative push-pull frequency that the entire fic as a whole does. does that make sense? i have no idea if that makes sense lmao.

anyway that's my take on the meat/candy split. hope it was satisfying u_u

BRF Reading - 9th of December, 2022

Question: What consequences will Harry face (if any) as a result of this reality show?

Interpretation: The Harkles will face consequences involving emotional and financial loss.

Card One: The Queen of Swords. I am getting a few impressions from this card. Firstly, the Queen of Swords is one of the cards that can represent Queen Elizabeth, as her official birthday was in June, in the air sign of Gemini. The late Queen may have made some provision for the bad behaviour of Harry and Meghan (like not leaving them any money - just my thought on the matter) , or communicated her wishes on this matter in some way. Swords are thoughts and communications of all kinds, and may be medical and legal issues, which leads me to my next point.

The Queen of Swords is barren. She does not have children and in the picture you can see the water of fertility being poured out on barren, stony land without making the land fertile (no green stuff is growing under the water). We know that there are issues around the Harkle children. Given the association of the suit of Swords with medical and legal issues, I am wondering if something is in place or in the process of being put in place with respect to the legitimacy of the children. This is a minor energy, so I'm not feeling it as certain, it is just a wondering.

The Queen of Swords is a card of strategy, like the King, but it emphasises the need to make logical and rational decisions that are not swayed by emotion. This ties in with the Emperor card from yesterday's reading. This is a caution against reacting too swiftly to the provocation offered by the Harkles. The consequences need to be proactive, not reactive. By that I mean they need to be thought out before hand, strategically, using cold hard thought, and not thrown into place in the heat of the moment. The Queen of Swords has the ability to speak the unvarnished truth, so she can use the sword of truth as a weapon against others. However, it has to be done with cold logic, and not as an emotional reaction, to be effective.

The Queen of Swords has clear boundaries and will call out those who cross her boundaries. This is something else that has to be done with the Harkles - they have to be called out whenever they cross a boundary, without people letting emotion saw them into being soft on the couple.

The key energy here is to think coldly and logically, to respond with facts and the truth and not with emotion, to avoid being over-hasty in your response, and to avoid having your response clouded or softened by your emotions.

Card Two: The Eight of Pentacles. This is a card of work. It is sometimes called the apprentice card, as it shows a person working to gain mastery over their skills. This card has two meanings for me.

Firstly, the message is to wait and see all of the work before making any reaction to it. We've seen the first bit of what the Harkles have been working on, but we have yet to see the second bit and the book following. That plus the podcasts are the latest batch of work from the Harkles, and all of it has to be seen and judged before any consequences can be given. Yes, Charles can assume that it will be more of the same narrative as before, like the gold coins that Daedalus is making in the picture are the same design repeated over and over, but until the second half of the series and the book are released he don't know this for sure. He has to wait and see exactly what the Harkles say and imply before a suitable response can be given to all of their recent work as a whole. Charles will look pretty silly if he releases a statement and then something that is truly horrendous or treasonous pops up. As hard as it is, waiting until after the book release is the better course (unless they do something so bad that the palace has to give a response).

The second message is to stay focused on this task. Don't let other things distract you. The current work for the palace is dealing with the Harkles's reality show and Harry's book. They need to stay calm, stay focused, and be diligent. Don't overlook any details that might trip you up later. It will mean extra work and increased responsibilities for those involved, but if they all stay focused and cross the 'i's and dot the 't's, the end result will be something long lasting that is worth the effort that has gone into it.

Pentacles is a suit of money and status. This suggests that the consequences to the Harkles will be in those areas - money and other material things, like jewellery, and status.

The main energy here is of waiting to see the entire body of work and then judging the work.

Card Three: The Eight of Cups. This is a card of loss and of walking away from something. The card shows Psyche descending into the underworld. To achieve this descent, she has stripped herself of everything that tied her to the material world - riches, status, emotional ties and so on. This tells me that the Harkles will suffer a loss, a serious loss that for them will be like a taste of death. I think the BRF will turn its back on the Harkle and walk away from them. They will cut all emotional ties and walk away, leaving the Harkles to fend for themselves.

This card says that this situation can not go on, things can not continue with all the options being held open. A choice has to be made, and here the choice is to abandon the Harkles and walk away. I am hoping that the abandonment includes stripping the Harkles of everything that ties them to the BRF (I think the titles are all that is left?), but I am a bit too emotionally invested in this matter to see clearly (I want Harry to lose his HRH permanently and to lose his Prince title, so he becomes just another member of the aristocracy, and this is clouding my interpretation as I am jumping up and down inside going yes! yes! make it happen!).

From this card it looks like the BRF is going to walk away from the Harkles emotionally, and no longer keep any ties with them. I think a public disownment is too much to hope for, but it will take something like that for the Harkles to stop demanding and receiving privileges because of Harry's title.

The main energy here is of cutting all ties and walking away.

Card Four: The Six of Pentacles. This is a card about money and material help. We see the king seated on his throne, giving money to Daedalus who is on his knees in front of the king, begging for help. Coming after the Eight of Cups, a card of loss, this card answers the question of what will be lost. Money and material help will be lost. The King will no longer hand out money when his son comes begging. If it is obvious that the BRF have cut all ties with the Harkles, other sources of income will dry up as well. The Harkles could very well be reduced to the state of Daedalus on the card, begging rich and powerful strangers for money to 'stay alive', i.e. continue in their current lifestyle.

This card could mean one last payout from the BRF as part of cutting ties, but the energy here is of loss, not of the joyful handing out of money.

The energy here is of a withdrawal of material things - money, material goods, worldly status. One or more of these things will no longer be handed out to the Harkles.

Card Five: The Five of Swords. This is my card for doing your duty, however unpleasant, and that is the energy that is coming off this card in a very stern manner. The BRF, aka King Charles, has to do his duty. Charles and William have to think as an institution, as a monarch and his heir dealing with a threat to their position, not as a father and brother dealing with a wayward brother.

The card shows Orestes being confronted by the god Apollo and an impossible choice - to kill his mother to avenge his father (and suffer the wrath of the gods for killing a parent), or to do nothing (and suffer the wrath of the gods for letting his father's murder lie unavenged). Like Orestes, Charles and his advisors may see this as an impossible choice, but also like Orestes, they have to choose and face the consequences of their choice. The card says that they should choose the path of duty and not the path of sentiment/emotion to achieve the best possible outcome. In this it echoes the message of the Queen of Swords at the start of the reading.

The message from this card is to do your duty to the monarchy and to the country, no matter how unpleasant it is or what you fear as the outcome.

Underlying Energy: The Ace of Wands. Aces are new beginnings, so this will be a new beginning for the BRF and for the Harkles. Wands are creative energy, so there will be a new arrangement, a new way of doing things. The man holding the wand is Zeus, the king of the gods, who also appears on the Emperor card, and this tells me that the new way of doing things will come from the palace (and not from the Harkles). Wands can be PR, so we may see a new twist in this PR battles, or new information being released via PR, or something like that. Things are going to change, and I think the change will be unexpected and it will take people by surprise, including the Harkles.

The Ace of Wands is a card of finding your voice and boldly using it. It is a card of taking a chance and going for it, starting that new project, follow that new idea. It is a card of passion and belief in yourself. I think the palace is going to respond to the Harkle reality show in new and surprising ways, and I don't think the Harkles are prepared for this.

As a minor or side energy, the Ace of Wands is also the card of sexual relations and spreading your seed around, which brings us back to the Harkle children and the question of who is their father.

Conclusion: King Charles has to act on the Harkle situation. He can no longer hold all options open. He has to make his decision coldly, logically and ruthlessly, not avoiding it from emotional feelings or from fear of the outcome. He needs to be prudent and wait until he has seen all of this recent body of work from the Harkles (reality show and book), and then he needs to act decisively, cutting all ties with the Harkles and making it obvious to the world that this has happened. This cutting of ties will involve the loss of money and/or material goods/and or worldly status for the Harkles.

Underlying all this is a new energy, a new plan, a new way of doing things. The King is holding the stick of PR (the Ace of Wands), not the Harkles, so he is in control. I get the energy of unexpectedness from this card, so I think the PR put out by the palace may take a new and surprising twist, being much bolder and more confident than before.

This poor organization (could be an event but doesn’t have to be) is mainly caused by greed. There’s also probably another situation that happens to be some kind of scam. Hongjoong is troubled by some superficiality and people being ungrateful. This could involve some cooperation. Planning a future is really hard right now for him and he feels kinda torn between all the stuff that’s happening. There is a lot uncertainty and things we should not know about. Hongjoong tries his best to keep the negative away from everyone he cares about. Pretty heavy energy.

Career - XX Judgement

Hongjoong wants to break free from everything this months. He is ready to explore different sides of himself to find some new spark in his work. He has some type of need of improvement when it comes to the approach of his work, but also wants to improve the environment for his team. It’s like an awakening, he’s freeing himself from any strings that held him back in the past. He’s ready to try new things.

Love - Seven of Swords

In November, Hongjoong is lacking trust in others but also himself. The past month caused him quite some pain and he’s now in a state of mind where it doesn’t feel safe for him to love. He doesn’t seem to be ready for any love connection right now and that’s okay. He seems to deal with some control issues as well, those could have been caused by the lies and betrayal he has been exposed to in October. Baldur's Gate 3 Companions: An updated perspective.

Gale: Could also get away with being called Brian. Mans has the most red flags in the entire game. And why do I say that? WELL, would you want a guy that talks about his ex all the time and would explode if you didn't romance him? Not sure what the deal is there but I dunno if I have what I need to handle all that. His sorcery is cool though, I'd fuck him for lessons.

Karlach: Literally the biggest golden retriever energy in literally any game I've seen these past few years. Seriously, you could tell her "Well... I could go with you, cause I have nothing better to do" and she'd be like "Not because you want to?" With these massive puppy eyes. Wish they did more with her character, because a purehearted person of her race? GOOD LORD I EAT UP THAT SHIT. Karlach, please marry me

Astarion: More red flags. But here's the thing, he's honest and upfront that he's toxic and full of absolute crap. Arguably though he has the most well-done story of, again, any game I've played these past few years. From how he's slowly unlearning the toxicity of 200 years of PURE SHIT, to managing to open his heart up to Tav, to the agonized, broken cries upon killing Cazador if you choose the Spawn ending. Legitimately, this is when 'I can fix him' comes true - mans is wonderful... After all the other stuff. (Please do not drop the building on him or kick him in the balls.)

Shadowheart: Imma be upfront, I hated her guts in Early Access. She's the kind of person I'd hatefuck and move on, cause ain't no way I'm associating with followers of Shar. HOWEVER, they did good giving her a redemption arc. She's still annoying and quite frankly not the greatest traveling buddy, but I can stomach her way more. (So maybe we'd be doing it.)

Lae'zel: I loved you in early access bb, and I still do. Literally, the Githyanki are savage and coldhearted by nature and their culture, so you can't exactly blame Lae'zel for just echoing what she knows. On the other side of the coin everything she's done and said was out of the kindness of her heart. She wants you cured in the only way she knows, and she wants what's best. So, if you dare bring your hatred for her in my askbox, be prepared to catch these hands. THOU DOTH NOT WANT THESE HANDS.

Minthara: Respectfully, ma'am, I don't vibe. Drow elves are sexy. What's not sexy is trying to kill me in my sleep, trying to get me to give in to the evil force inside me, etc etc etc. Also, what happened to your fluffy hair in early access? Girl that's your one redeeming quality. Can understand trust issues though, that I'd be willing to get you help with if you'd stop trying to murder me. I think that they are both the same level of romantic in different ways.

I agree with you that they weren't portrayed as particularly romantic- the writers and actors tried with Jane, but she just ended up being a waste receptacle for Dean's and Casey's emotional abuse (hmm... I wonder what that says about conventional heterosexual relationships and patriarchy... don't get me started).

But, I would argue that they actually were both very romantic with one another. Here we go: for Jane, she is the classic protector/provider type. She opens doors for Maura, she touches Maura when they encounter crowded or dangerous situations, and she says grandiose things like "I don't know if I'd die for you, but I'd come damn close." In later seasons, sometimes Jane is mean (honestly think this is the product of trauma from AH's divorce/menty b more than an intentional pulling away or writing change), but she provides Maura with a kind of love Maura's never experienced before. She contemplates prison time for Maura (most I'd get is two years, Maura's lookin' at life), she spits at God for Maura (using the confessional and the priest to put God on notice - I will commit murder, I will defy you, for her. I'm premeditating a cardinal sin. Because Alice put her in danger). These things seem to contradict her entire personality, and are the most romantic things she ever did - she chose Maura over her badge and her religion (hot). So, she's not kissy-kissy, take you out to dinner and bring you flowers type of romantic, but she's extremely romantic in the way that counts. For Maura. I think that if she actually got with Maura she'd be affectionate in all those traditional ways, too.

Maura is the other side of that romance coin. She's the steady for Jane's storm, giving Jane a calm love she's never experienced before. Would you like some tea? When Jane's dad is sick, a soft, quiet, why are you talking like this? when Jane denigrates herself for being stuck on a case. She opens herself up and lets Jane fall in with just her words (and physically, too. Remember "you're my nutballs, you're my family?" She literally spreads her arms out wide). She kind of gets stuck in that using-money-to-buy-love stuff with Jane (offering to pay for her lawyer, the Ferrari experience, the couch), but I think the show actually (unintentionally) does a good job of tracing Maura's evolution here. Like when she races to the be the last person Jane sees before she gets in the ambulance after saving Tasha. Or like when she sits with Jane and holds her hand, telling her that the case can wait just a little longer while they spend some quality time - because she knows Jane craves it but will never ask, so she just gives it (hot). Maura's a very reserved person physically, but she's all over Jane (I'd argue because Jane is all over her and it feels so fucking good). Also when she calls Jane to tell her she's got her back? She's a fucking quick learner.

I think this all is what makes it so easy for me to write them as romantic partners - from these schemas you can extrapolate the way they'd physically be with one another (Jane falling into that "I'd be the guy" stereotype she clings to, plus her more dominant, masculine energy, but slowly allowing herself to be vulnerable; Maura open and pliant but ultimately in charge).

Hopefully this makes sense!

How they meet

Honestly, I'm still trying to figure that out. Poppy lives Downtown, as I imagine the weasels do as well. Or at least are most notorious in. So the chances of her really developing any relationship with the members is slim to none. Especially with their nature compared to hers; she most certainly wouldn't approve of the whole dipping toons thing.

I've got a few ideas of how Poppy and Psycho officially meet, but nothing is set in stone. Which is frustrating to me XD How it ends? Well.... We all saw the weasels die. That'd be the canon ending... But this ain't canon, this is the wonderful world of fanfiction.

Headcannons and tidbits

They'd kind of have a similar dynamic/energy that Jessica and Roger would have. Complete opposites in almost every way, the more level-headed one with the zany one, people would be questioning how genuine their relationship is, etc.

They're both horror toons, so even outside of my ship for them, I'd like to think that they would at least have a sort of understanding of the other's position. Though while Poppy was made to be the victim in horror cartoons, Psycho was made to be the villain; they'd be two sides of the same coin.

Don't get me wrong. He still does creep her out from time to time, and they may not have the same morals. But, she does try to be patient with him still.

Poppy would have actually fallen in love first, but would have been too scared about ruining their friendship to say anything, and didn't expect him to even be interested in romance (he wasn't before, but then she came along). But Psycho didn't have that fear, so he was the one who confessed first, after realizing he got feelings.

She would stick to the classic pet names, like Honey, Sweetheart, Dear, and would affectionationately call him Chocho if she was in a more playful mood. While Psycho usually sticks with nicknames related to her name, like Pop. He also calls her Snap Crackle Pop when she's mad.

Even with their vast differences, they still have interests that can unite them. They can be seen in the kitchen talking about the worst diseases throughout history, because Poppy likes history and of course Psycho would be interested in that stuff.

Even though she's fretful, Psycho can help her let go of her worries and have fun. Even if his wild shenanigans may give her a heart attack. He makes her laugh. And in turn, Poppy helps Psycho calm down more and just be slightly less of a menace.

Poppy gets cold easily, while Psycho heats up like a lizard under a heat lamp. She snuggles up to him for warmth in the winter or when it's cold at night.

I know all couples argue, but I legitimately can't imagine these two fighting. Poppy would rather steer clear of conflict, and Psycho doesn't see a point in yelling unless necessary, so the two kind of just... Talk through their issues. The worst argument I can see them having, is whether or not the towel is dirty when you use it after showering.

She's actually the one with more relationship experience, and Psycho has no idea what he's doing. She kind of helped him understand how romantic relationships worked, and figure out what you do in these sorts of things.

Sometimes, if Smartass needs Psycho distracted or kept busy, he just calls Poppy over. She may not be an official Toon Patrol member, but she has a role in the gang because of this.

They both have their fears and nightmares. It's most noticeable with Poppy, though Psycho has his own bad memories- fabricated and real- from his time as an actor. Of course, they help each other out as best as they can. And in a way, it's brought them closer together too.

While of course the optimal choice for any member of the Nearl family is for all four of them to marry me at once, Blemishine does have some nice ships. I'm not the biggest fan of Blemishine x Platinum even though that's probably her most popular (non-incest...) ship because their interactions have been pretty much universally hostile (and not in the hot way) and Platinum is more focused on the Doctor at this point anyway. I think it's very telling that "Blemishine, who normally loves to laugh, has never smiled in front of Platinum. Anyone with a discerning eye can see the distance between them." That said, the same profile entry this line comes from implies that mending their relationship is possible, so like... the ship could work if you put in the effort, but... Eh. No shade to anyone who likes this ship, but it just doesn't work for me.

I feel like the optimal partner for Blemishine is someone who shares, or at least indulges, her engineering nerd interests. Eunectes is a good choice for that, so I'll just copy/paste what I wrote in the Eunectes ask:

Both of them are engineering nerds who geek out over all the cool stuff at Rhodes Island, they're both very smart and observant, and they both have this kind of innocence about them regarding the ways of the world. I think they're cute together.

I have been informed that there is also an operator record that tells us that the two of them frequently work together, but I will be honest, Arknights throws so much information at us that there's no way I can remember all of it and then compounds the problem by storing it in so many different places that are not easy to reference, so I'm going to forget things or just not know them to begin with. It's unavoidable.

I can't think of anyone else I want to pair with Maria in a strictly romantic context, but I think she has a lot of really cute options for platonic friendships.

Mudrock + Blemishine mostly comes from their interactions in actual gameplay (Blemishine's S2 can heal Mudrock, it's hilarious), but I do think that putting Certified Weirdo Mudrock together with Happy, Upbeat Blemishine is going to be very funny, if nothing else. Blemishine will be building something in the workshop while Mudrock gives play-by-play commentary to her pet rocks.

Blaze + Blemishine: I see this one more as a friendly/sisterly relationship, but it still has the jock/nerd dynamic I like. We know from her profile that Blaze works very hard to learn the science and math necessary to master her Arts, and we know from that same profile that book learning does not come naturally to her. On the other side of the coin, Maria is not a natural-born fighter like Margaret, but she does have a natural aptitude for engineering. I just really like the idea of Blaze giving Maria tips for improving her fighting skills while Maria fixes up Blaze's equipment and helps her with her studies.

Gladiia + Blemishine: So much comedy potential here. Gladiia is actually an Undersea Engineering Nerd, but she's a very tired Undersea Engineering Nerd who is not particularly fond of people and is not prepared to deal with this happy, peppy, literally glowing horsegirl geeking out over her. The thought of Tired Mom Gladiia taking Blemishine under her wing, regretting every minute of it as Blemi's energy drives her insane, and then finally admitting in the deepest, darkest corner of her heart that she doesn't actually regret a single moment is heartwarming.

Oof, it's been a hot minute since I've sent you an ask... Sorry 'bout that and also for not sending you any New Year's wishes, irl stuff kept me pretty busy lately. I hope you had fun celebrating! <3

...Admittedly, part of the reason for my absence was that I've also been feeling unpleasantly drained by the Nightmare Pass missions, on top of everything else. I feel a little bad about pretty much coming here and complaining, but I'd like to hear your opinion since you have the Pass activated and I'm f2p, so I wonder how our experiences differ.

I feel like the rewards are.. lackluster, in all honesty. The yellow keys are nice, the frame is pretty... And that's about it. Aside from a small bonus of getting some gems after completing the daily missions, there's really not much to look forward to. It feels like there's far too much effort required and not enough rewards.

Not to mention the missions themselves. God, the missions. I hate the way they work with a passion. The fact that you need to log in daily is fine, the fact that you need to grind a bit is also fine... But then there's shit like "claim a likeability reward" which I'd love to do, except I only have one left over from Andrealphus and still half a Pass to get through. I remember you writing that it feels like being punished for unlocking content, and I completely agree. That's exactly how it feels. I am not going to waste all of my red keys in an attempt to get a new L-grade card since I have all S-grade devils maxed out already.

And speaking of wasting red keys! The "special draw" missions also leave a bit of a sour taste in my mouth. I remember making those single-pulls while sighing deeply because, well, it just doesn't feel like all of the resources I'm consuming are going to be compensated. I spend Solomon's tears, both types of keys, a lot of energy (in-game and irl) and most of the time I get... A few boxes of randomised jellies? That I can get extremely easily through other means? At least make them select-type like the ones in event shops, damn it!

Basically, I'm salty and kind of sad. I love the game dearly, but I think I'm going to give up on the Nightmare Pass. Once I hit a likeability reward mission that I cannot complete, I'm out. The frame is pretty, but getting one from an event shop is going to be way easier and less stress-inducing. I don't want to burn myself out (any more than I already did) by trying to complete it.

So sorry for such a long rant, I ended up getting a bit carried away... I'm really interested in how the effort/reward ratio feels like with a purchased Pass. I'm not really active in the fandom (I pretty much only follow you and the official acc, lol) so I haven't seen people speak about it yet. Hopefully, at least some people have a better time with that hell of an event.

So, I used my premium pass from the pre-order rewards on the Nightmare Pass so I could study the way it works from a p2p perspective. I must say, the reward you get in p2p are much better. I received many yellow and red keys, Solomon's Tears, Puddings, Books, Coins, etc. I had unlimited auto-fights in the nightmare dungeon so I can grind coins for the shop easily. Over all, the amount of rewards you get may justify the $60 price tag IF you can afford it and you want the card at the end. Also, this assumes they do this within limited quantities. Like, I would say once every few months at most. Maybe very 2-3 months at most. Still sucks you can only get the card if you're willing to pay out the nose for the rewards. I did look at the f2p rewards and... yeah, not worth it. That is a lot of grinding for very little payoff. I was getting 2-4 reward every day because I was getting the rewards for every tier so it felt more worthwhile.

Also, yeah. I have been playing the game less since the Nightmare Pass started because I was afraid of locking myself out of future requirements for the missions. I had trouble with likability (something I usually max out within 2-3 days of getting a new unit), I was afraid to level up characters and their skills, I wasn't promoting anyone, I wasn't doing anything because I was so afraid I would screw myself by playing the game.

That's why I think Nightmare Pass kind of sucks the most. I felt like I was being punished for having played the game up until this point. Some missions were, as you said, fine. Any missions involving pleasing someone in the Secret Club were fine (not the unholy board because some of those I had maxed out already and it was pain to advance them more). Any missions where I had to fight were good. That I can always do. But missions that have finite end points are terrible (there is a max number of levels characters can have, a max amount of promotions I can do, only so far I can go on an unholy board, likability stops at 100%, characters can only evolve 5 times before they are maxed). Those missions suck because I can screw myself by actually having invested the time into the game before the Nightmare Pass is even out. It actually sucked to basically stop playing this game because I was afraid to play and screw myself out of getting Gabriel.

And the missions are kind of sucky too. Because each stage only unlocks after the previous one is completed, it's hard to know what is coming up and easy to screw yourself. Not everyone has 20ST available multiple times. Not everyone hoards their keys to do the multiple draws over and over again. And having 25 stages that can only be unlocked once daily rather than continuously (since the one mission on each day is to login) it means that if you miss a few days, you are screwed. You can pay to unlock the path with Nightmare Coins, but that assumes you have enough (and each reward gets more expensive as you go).

Overall, Nightmare Pass feels like the kind of event that is aimed toward people who dedicate time to the game to complete the rewards, but those same people can easily get screwed if they put in all that effort too early. The nightmare Pass isn't terrible, but it definitely needs some tweaking. It's the kind of event I would only continue in the future if I really want the card/haven't invested so much I screw myself. Honestly, it feels like the kind of event you finish and only debate purchasing the other rewards after you see how far you've managed to get to see if you can justify the expense.

Also, never feel like you can't rant to me. I rant all the time. Goodness knows I rant all the time... I don't do it because I hate the game. It's me trying to point out issues for others and because I want to see things changed for the better.

Okay, this is very dumb, but I’m actually kind of really glad that Dream only got top 20 (although I wish he didn’t have such a rough game), this lowers his coin average and greatly improves my chance of getting a 5up & Dream Pride MCC. Please Scott smajor I’m begging you. My ideal team is 5up & Dream & Ranboo & Tubbo, but I’ll take any 5up & Dream team.

I talked about this before, but 5up (as he just showed off) is AMAZING with his comms, scheduling practice, and getting his team on board with plans. He plays a great first or second in command. I genuinely believe that with 5up’s 2 floater strat, Dream could have fun during buildmart, and I want that for him. Because 5up likes to be bossy during buildmart, and I actually think that’s exactly what Dream needs. Clear tasks, not having to worry about taking the lead or managing anyone, just getting to be helpful and quick about getting stuff. 

Also the two of them in SOT would be a slaughter. End of story.

Also. Please. Give me them in TGTTOS. I beg. I require it. The thing! About Parker! Tell me about Parker (which one? Thanks for asking!)

i made this post a while ago where i go off the rails explain my headcanons for each and every parker. however, i do have more! i have also changed some stuff. but go ahead and read both posts so you get the full experience >:)

i really really really really want to draw them in a line up one day.

prime (he/him but does not care): uses a quad cane to get around and he's decorated it with stickers, mostly those barcode stickers that are on fruits. gives incredibly good hugs but might burn you a bit. has a hard time making and keeping friends/romantic partners/platonic partners/etc but once he gets close to someone he gets very clingy

ii (it/he): was an artist, liked graffiti and spray paint. it really enjoyed painting as well and could paint beautiful landscapes and portraits. over time, it learned some magic and would enchant these paintings, to give the viewer extra luck or a feeling of vertigo (or something else entirely)

iii (he/him or se/ser): in the last post, i mentioned that he is dating wyatt mason. they met at wyatt's 17th bday party, which also doubled as a Diplomatic Mission to make blaseball gods and klickball gods not as mad at each other! (for context: wyatt mason is the child of a klickball god). that didn't work very well, but wyatt and iii met and became friends. at the time of meeting wyatt, iii was 18 but he later turned 19 a few months later. wyatt and iii would meet in "secret" (aka they would hang out in los angeles and iii would do ser best to not be spotted). they frequented parks a lot. wyatt would grab a basketball, go "this one's for you!", shoot the ball, and miss. and iii would be endeared every time. they had a qpr that iii kept mostly hidden from the coin. when the grand unslam and wyatt masoning happened, wyatt mason was gone and replaced by NaN, who is kind of a different being? and wyatt mason as we know him became the microphone. iii was pretty messed up after wyatt's death but tried very hard to appear normal. one of ser favorite things to do with wyatt before his death was make tea, sit huddled up to each other, doing different things. like iii would read a book and wyatt would play geometry dash.

iiii (he/they): universal friend. was really excited for christmas when he died. they liked all typical fair foods; pickles, corn dogs, funnel cakes, etc. they loved going to farmer's markets.

iiiii (any, primarily he/she/they but doesn't mind neos): my poor little meow meow......... i think he liked beyblade some. never really got into it but did impulse buy a bey once. i think he definitely liked neopets. had a blumaroo. she had trouble with food textures and would avoid eating sometimes, and eventually started getting or making smoothies. has the same energy as a possessed kid in a horror movie but that's just because she is putting on an act! they're actually really sweet and softspoken

iiiii alt (she/he): vegetarian. has a patterned headband collection. gets reading glasses and wears them on a chain around her neck. likes argyle and floral print (although maybe not together), and usually wears a blouse and floor-length skirt. he put flames on the side of her wheelchair. really really sweet and talkative. also really lonely! she needs a friend :(

Ice Guy and His Cool Female Colleague Episode 3: Nyamero

This show really finds such fun ways to be cute and happy. I mean, they have Himuro kicking his feet in excitement that he gets to continue to work with Fuyutsuki now that they've been placed in their permanent departments, and you can't help but grin at his energy and happiness.

Himuro and Fuyutsuki as a pair though are really compelling, because it's not like Himuro is the only source of cute and energetic stuff, and by the same coin Fuyutsuki also isn't the only place where we can get serious and compelling moments. The balance struck is really solid, and this episode worked to break it down even more.

We get to see Himuro take on a more serious angle to take Fuyutsuki out to dinner to show his appreciation, and we get to see Fuyutsuki act a little self-conscious as well as voice and display her emotions more. They even went as far as to have Himuro pull the same thing that Fuyutsuki did for him in Okinawa.

It's really great to see that despite their character archetypes, their interactions aren't bound by them. Fuyutsuki taking charge first to be kind and helpful to Himuro, and now Himuro returning the favor. There's no big dramatic piece between it, just the casual sense of reciprocation, that since the other was nice to them they should try to be equally as nice in return.

Throughout it all though, they keep the original themes strong. Himuro is seen as the cute and fluffy character with snowmen that appear at just the mention of Fuyutsuki.

And then there's Fuyutsuki, who always comes off cool and aloof, even when they're (in their own way) excitedly talking about going sledding and doing other stuff together with Himuro.

This show just really knows its audience. It's not trying to rush things to set it up, it's not skipping along or dragging its feet, and it's not trying to dramatize things. It's a perfectly sensible, casual, and cozy adult office romance. My only wish is to see more pretty background and environment work. There were definitely a good few in today's episode, but they were very subdued and not really framed as well, and the Okinawa getaway of the previous episode really has me wanting for more of the vibrant and saturated colors they love to use.

Regardless of that, I'm really enjoying how easy and relaxing this show has been to watch. It doesn't have anything that makes you think that you need more this instant, but it's certainly something where I go, "oh, today's Tuesday, which means there's a new Ice Guy episode" which gives me a pick me up for the day.

@moviesludge First of all you're right about all this stuff and what I'm about to say is very tangential, but I'm 99% sure that Anton LaVey coined the term "psychic vampire", and what he meant wasn't at all occult. His version of Satanism is based in part on Nietzsche and Ayn Rand, which means it can be pretty annoying, but it also means he just believed you shouldn't let masochists, complainers, and other chronic attention-seekers bring you down. Just because someone is acting pathetic, it doesn't mean you have to feel sorry for them. That was basically his main gripe about Christianity, that he saw it as enforcing a moral imperative to give up your precious time and resources to people who weaponize patheticness to make you feel like you're selfish and uncharitable if you don't give them whatever they want. Followed to its logical conclusion, LaVey's thinking condemns basic social welfare and favors a "might makes right" attitude that's pretty unpleasant (although I think an intelligent person could say that welfare and community support programs benefit EVERYONE for various reasons and you don't even have to be compassionate to understand how they improve the streets we all have to walk down, but I digress). But, on the micro scale of just being circumspect about who gets your sympathy and favors, he's pretty reasonable. With that in mind though, it's funny how there's this pipeline from Church of Satan founder Anton LaVey using "psychic vampire" to describe people who are just a drag, to occultists way down the line using it to mean something extremely literal, a form of parasitic human with the preternatural power to siphon off your life force with their mind--and then even further down the road there are self-described psychic vampires who claim to make a lifestyle out of developing this supposed power. All this is one reason I love the What We Do In the Shadows series, Colin Robinson is a combination of the new age crackpot idea of the literal psychic or "energy" vampire, along with the LaVeyan concept of a person who is so fucking tedious that just being around them can make you feel like you're losing years off your life. Like the average literalist thinks about these "vampires" in fairly romantic, gothy terms, but if they were a real thing in real life they would just be some kind of completely redundant yet unavoidable bureaucrat. Anyway, my ex-friend was definitely of the literalist mindset who thought I was a "real" psychic vampire who had to be stopped with a hex, which is really funny because the only thing I took away from her was the enjoyment she got out of beating me up all the time.
