#this is why i refuse to buy any celebrity or influencer merch
Note
why don't u want ppl who stan celebs to follow u ?
okay so this is kind of a long answer but i guess you asked for it.
Let’s start by talking about the word itself. “stan”. The origin of it comes from Eminem’s “Stan” and it is literally a portmanteau of “stalker” and “fan”. Stalker-fan. Stan. Not a good start.
And honestly that’s just what stans are. Stalker fans. People who obsessively check the socials of a certain celebrity/celebrities, people who are literally besotted by these pop culture figures where they dedicate a good portion of their waking hours to thinking/talking/posting about them, people who go to extreme lenghts to defend people they don’t even know.
This is called a parasocial relationship. Parasocial relationships are one-sided dynamics in which energy, interest and time are extended towards the object of obsession whilst the object of obsession (commonly a celebrity) remains ignorant of the existence of the other.
The terminology “stan” (“stalker-fan”) has been ameliorated to the point where the negative meaning and root of the word is elevated to a positive one.
Something stans don’t seem to understand is that celebrities are just famous people. PEOPLE. They are capable of making mistakes and being wrong. Idolising someone is never okay, especially not when basically every celebrity ever is problematic in one way or the other. There’s no such thing as an “unproblematic fave”.
Additionally, most of these celebrities are actually worse than your average person because they have 1. a shit ton of money 2. clout 3. rich friends to back them up 4. a large fanbase comprised mainly of stans that refuse to acknowledge any wrongdoing from the celebrity’s side and who will go so far as to harass people speaking up against them.
Stans seem to feel an extremely unhealthy sense of duty towards their celebrities. Ask yourself if you would do anything for a celebrity who literally does not know you exist. If your answer is “yes” or “maybe” you need to rethink your priorities a bit.
Stans seem to view their favourite celebrities as idols. As gods. Putting a person on a pedestal and looking away when another atrocity comes to light. Nobody’s perfect. Celebrities least of all.
People who say “we stan a woke king” are actually just unhealthily obsessed with a rich (usually white) man doing the bare minimum. People who tweet “👏👏👏👏👏” when their fave celeb puts up a two line tweet about black lives matter or whatever the new big Thing is don’t seem to get that your fave has millions of dollars but instead of doing anything useful they tweet “#BLM” after weeks of silence and suddenly they’re “woke” and “everybody should stan x”. they’re also influencing a lot of young people into believing that all you have to do to be unproblematic is the bare fucking minimum.
Stans also have a way of making everything (and i mean EVERYTHING) about the celebrities they idolize. When celebrity x is called out for something or the other, stans of celebrity y immediately go “x is cancelled stan y instead” like that is not what this is about jennifer. (also cancel culture is a different totally pointless thing but this is not the post for that)
Celebrities also capitalise off their (usually teen/young adult) fanbases who honestly don’t know better. Stop stealing money from kids by selling a hoodie with your logo on it for 120$. Also I think there’s something fundamentally wrong with owning a backpack that has your favourite celebrity’s face on it.
Putting people on a pedestal is fundamentally not okay. You’re giving them clout and permission to do whatever they want because they know they have an aggressive fanbase that will go to extreme lengths to defend their honour. A popular singer (i’m not saying who, but you probably know) appropriated black culture and now you have an entire toxic fanbase appropriating black culture and anyone who dares speak up is blocked/reported/harassed or worse.
Especially when the celebrity does something wrong and when they’re called out for it, they tweet “all this negativity has been really affecting my mental health so I’m taking a break from social media 😭😭see you around guys xo ” and victimise themselves. This causes the stans to get even more defensive and lash out against anyone critiquing their idol. When the celebrity comes back from their “complete social media hiatus” (face it, you know they have a PR team giving them updates about what the fanbase is doing in their name), the fanbase has threatened and harassed everyone speaking up against the celebrity into a corner where they can’t affect the celebrity. Cleaning up a mess by making a bigger mess. Fanbases have gone as far as to threaten and harass (even send out death threats!!!!) someone criticising their celebrity and the celebrities have done nothing about it.
Newsflash: these celebrities could not give less of a fuck about you. I don’t care how “interactive” with their fanbases you think they are. Celebrities do not care about their fans. All they need from you is your money. They’ll make an instagram post saying they’re so “blessed to have such a wonderful fanbase 😊” but they mean they’re lucky to have so many fans gullible enough to buy their merch, to stick up for them even when they’re in the wrong.
also, celebrity stans are usually very annoying, refuse to critically think about the people they idolise and honestly I don’t have the energy to deal with that.

You don't know Harry's reason for doing this story so you idk why you're saying that he did it for a check and good pr, why can't we just enjoy him reading a story w/o any controversy
Girl, I voiced my opinion because the fact of the matter is very apparent to me. I’m not deep into the fandom like some other people who chose to be in a mindset where he’s an angel and cares for them individually and never has self serving motives because that’s simply not reasonable and it’s making them look gullible.
It’s not controversy to point out the fact people obsess on everything that he does as if he’s some worship worthy figure, they legit crashed the app then criticized the calm app itself for their own flocking causing the crash.
They act like Harry knows they exist individually and care about them personally and it’s just a bit irritating seeing people be actively delusional it’s weird.
Harry only posts, or interacts with people when he’s promoting something he profits off of. His album, merch, him hitting top on the billboards posting it to encourage people to double their buying and promoting of his material, when he’s doing a brand deal, etc and people don’t let other influencers get away with that so why does Harry get to do it with no one saying anything about it and acting as if he’s an angel?
He didn’t come up with the idea himself. He didn’t approach the company suggesting he do it simply for ~your mental health~ and the ~care in his heart for his fans~. It was offered to him for a commission on both ends and put out with a price on it.
It’s no different than the beauty influencers who only post when they have a launch coming, and they get called out for it so why does the stating of behavior get cherry picked depending on the person exhibiting the same behavior?
It’s not controversy, it’s pointing out the obvious that people refuse to see because they’re so desperate to feel special to a celebrity who has no idea they exist.
It’s weird and I don’t understand fandoms
