do you have any poetry collection recommendations/poet recommendations in general just to like Read?
boy do i ever!!!
okay i have two all time top favorite poets (not ranked in a particular order):
1. Louise Glück: There was actually an anthology published of all the books so published from the start of her career to 2012.
(Poems 1962-2012 is 600+ pages of incredible poetry and relatively cheap, especially for its size and considering poetry tends to cost more than fiction books)
Glück’s poetry is actually the reason I started reading more poetry in the first place. She writes both long form and short form poetry (with her more recent working being longer than a lot of her previous poems), and her language level tends to be pretty accessible.
She writes about hundreds of different topics, but reading from the anthology you get a large mix of themes about motherhood, love, and nature and she also has collections that focus on greek mythology as well as jewish religion.
She has won a Nobel Prize for her poetry, which I consider to be a pretty good way to gauge the caliber of her work!
Highly, highly recommend her work!!
2. Ocean Vuong.
I’ve read his three most recent works: Night Sky With Exit Wounds, On Earth We’re Briefly Gorgeous, and Time is a Mother.
On Earth We’re Briefly Gorgeous is actually a novel rather than a poetry collection but it reads a lot like poetry and I consider it to be an must-read.
A lot of his works center around his his experience as a queer, Vietnamese American and his relationship with his own intrapersonal identity as well as with his mother. I cant think of a single poem of his that isn’t absolutely incredible, and I think if you’re going to talk about the best poets of our age he’s a crucial mention.
I highly recommend reading his works in publishing order (which is the way I listed them above). His poetry is genuinely life-changing and I cannot stress how much I recommend his writing.
Outside of my two favorite authors I also recommend:
–Amanda Gorman, who is the youngest inaugural poet in U. S. history and is shaping the voice of modern poetry.
You can watch her recite her inaugural poem, “The Hill We Climb” here!
She also has published a collection of her poetry, Call Us What We Carry, which I read all in the same day I bought it because it’s brilliant and captivating.
—The Poet X by Elizabeth Acevedo, which is a fiction novel but the main character narrates the story through her own poetry, making it a poetry collection and a novel all in one. I read this for the first time when I was 13 and I pick it up again every single year.
(I do also highly recommend looking up trigger warnings for this book before you read it, because there are a couple scenes that can be intense!)
—The World Keeps Ending, and the World Goes On by Franny Choi. It’s likely you’re familiar with this quote from it (which i see circulating tumblr and pinterest all the time):
“Lord, I confess I want the clarity of catastrophe but not the catastrophe. Like everyone else, I want a storm I can dance in.
I want an excuse to change my life.”
And I can guarantee the rest of this poetry collection is just as poignant and beautiful! Highly recommend, 10/10 stars always.
—Pablo Neruda is also one of my favorite poets! I own a large collection of his poetry, The Poems of Pablo Neruda, which places the original poem, written in Spanish, next to the English translation, which I enjoy a lot. He also has a lot of well-known quotes that float around tumblr a lot, so that sense of familiarity can be fun, especially when you’re not expecting it!
Hope you enjoy these recommendations!

You said I made you spontaneous.
You made me feel safe.
You said I made you do things you never thought you could.
I just wanted to see you.
I wanted to see the real you.
So when you dipped in and took apart of me I thought, why not?
Now, now I see a monster, a taker of things innocent, cause you made me feel and I made you alive.
Did our secret break you the way it broke me?

a poem i wrote last year for the people interested in my poetry;;
what if i
what if i live life without someone ever willing to love me the same way back
what if i never experience true lasting happiness in my life
what if i never find someone that feels like home besides him
what if i never find my true personality
what if everything about myself is a lie
what if the only thing i ever know about myself is that i’m living
what if the only person that makes me feel safe doesn’t care at all
what if i never feel the type of love i’ve been searching for
what if i never find true love
what if i never find my “soulmate”
what if i already met my soulmate but i’m not theirs
what if my life goes blank, the line straightens, the weight of the world is gone
what if-
silence
it’s a piece about the “what if” thoughts i have about myself :) i know it’s not the best,, mediocre at best but i figured since you guys are interested i should at least post a little something

i’d say that i’m an artist and you are my muse, but no work of art could ever compare to you
words neither, as i could write thousands of letters, sonnets, and poems but that would barely be a toe-dip into the vast pool, the endless ocean of everything
that is you
if i could i would rip my heart out, and give it to you full of sugar
i would drain every drop from my veins to paint the perfect portrait of you
if i could pour my heart, soul, sweat, and blood
maybe i could capture a drop if the beauty that eeps from your every fiber
i would puke up all my guts just to eat you whole
or fall into little pieces
to fulfill your every meal
i would kiss you
over a strawberry milkshake
so i could taste the most sweetest things
wrapped in two
every breath i breathe, is a silent whisper of “I love you”

Be not Defeated by the Rain
Be not defeated by the rain, Nor let the wind prove your better. Succumb not to the snows of winter. Nor be bested by the heat of summer.
Be strong in body. Unfettered by desire. Not enticed to anger. Cultivate a quiet joy. Count yourself last in everything. Put others before you. Watch well and listen closely. Hold the learned lessons dear.
A thatch-roof house, in a meadow, nestled in a pine grove's shade.
A handful of rice, some miso, and a few vegetables to suffice for the day.
If, to the East, a child lies sick: Go forth and nurse him to health. If, to the West, an old lady stands exhausted: Go forth, and relieve her of burden. If, to the South, a man lies dying: Go forth with words of courage to dispel his fear. If, to the North, an argument or fight ensues: Go forth and beg them stop such a waste of effort and of spirit.
In times of drought, shed tears of sympathy. In summers cold, walk in concern and empathy.
Stand aloof of the unknowing masses: Better dismissed as useless than flattered as a "Great Man".
This is my goal, the person I strive to become.

please text me back - an original poem about my bpd and experiencing having a favourite person
i’m so sorry to any person who i have ever found myself attached to.
i apologise for burdening you with my affection.
being loved by me must be exhausting.
but i hope you know that it’s just as exhausting if not more actually being me.
let me quickly explain every thought going through my head over the course of any conversation we have ever had through dms.
the second i wake up i text you it takes me 5 minutes to decide how to word it.
good morning,
exclamation mark!
no to open you might not feel the need to respond.
good morning how are you smiley face.
get rid of the smiley face
you may be sad or mad and the happy nature might make it worse
maybe i shouldn’t say good morning just morning.
okay
morning how are you
do i add a question mark or does that seem too formal?
i’m just going to send it.
it takes you 3 minutes to open the message
i know because i say moving my eye from the dm to the time at the top of my phone until i watched the delivered turn to seen.
it takes you 14 seconds exactly to type out your response
i counted them.
“hi i’m good.”
you didn’t ask how i was back.
i’m now wondering if you care about me at all.
you don’t do you?
you hate me don’t you?
if you despise me just tell me!
if you are annoyed i messaged you could just say that!
you only replied out of obligation and we both know it!
fine!
whatever!
it was stupid anyway!
you’re stupid anyway!
i don’t care anyway!
“hbu”
oh.
okay.
it’s fine.
im fine.
we’re fine.
still you only typed out 3 letters not the full sentence.
you put as little energy as you possibly could into acknowledging my existence but i’m choosing to ignore that.
i reply with
i’m good thank you do you have any plans for today.
it takes you half an hour to see the message and you tell me you have work.
i see the notification but i don’t open it i don’t want to seem to eger.
instead i set a timer for 60 minutes then i can message you back.
oh cool
exclamation point
i hope you have a good shift
heart emoji
how long is it going to be
question mark
also sorry i didn’t respond until now i hadn’t seen the message.
it’s now been an hour of me checking my phone every 2 minutes just incase i missed your message.
but you didn’t reply.
you didn’t even open it.
because you hate me…
you despise me.
you are actively trying to find ways to cut me out your life!
well fine i can make it easier!
i could block you right now so you don’t have too i’m sure you would just love that!
or better yet i could die right now so you never have to say another word to me and you never run the risk of pumping into me in the street when we both know you hate me so much!
and maybe it would make you respond quicker if you knew this is what i was thinking right now!
you might even feel guilty for how much you cant stand to be around me!
but equally i then wouldn’t be able to see your response if you did then reply.
so i guess maybe i shouldn’t.
and it occurs to me only then that maybe i was being a little bit silly.
maybe that was semi irrational.
maybe i have somewhat lost my mind.
but i don’t have time to think of that while i’m still counting the minutes it takes for you to open my fucking message like i’m meant to be counting my breaths.
when you reply it’s 8 hours later,
and i am emotionally drained from repeating that last step several times over.
“Hey, just got back from work.
I’m Ok.”
that was it.
that was all that i had drove myself crazy to receive.
you didn’t even ask how i was.
and i don’t get why you just don’t care.
and on the inside i’m going insane.
i am filled with anger but i don’t want to scare you away so instead i type out
hey i missed you,
exclamation mark!
i hope you had a good day
smiley face emoji,
back track
i hope you are had an amazing day!
also not to sound annoying but i noticed in your last message you put ok instead of okay also you capitalised the o normally you only use lower case are we still cool?
tears are streaming down my face and you don’t know that.
my breathing is uneven and you are unaware of that
so when you reply with
“my day was good thank you.
also obviously we’re still cool why wouldn’t we be
laughing face emoji”
i once again notice you still haven’t asked me about my day.
and now you are laughing at my insecurity while i have been crying for hours.
but im too tired to fight so if you say we’re fine im sure we are.
so i just say
sorry it doesn’t matter just had a bad day is all i was probably just reading into things you know how i can be.
it takes you 30 seconds to see it.
and it takes you a minute to reply.
i counted.
stop apologising we have been over this it’s getting really annoying constantly having to give you so much reassurance sometimes being around you is just so draining.
this time i don’t reply.
i just sit and sob.
because yeah it is so fucking draining.
and i already know that
and i don’t ever get to take a break.

So I went out with a guy for a while and not long after we started dating he noticed my backpack which has a lot of Kirby pins. He mentioned them and I said "Yeah I'm a huge fan of Kirby! But, I've only played Kirby's Epic Yarn." Which left him utterly gobsmacked. I was expecting this reaction, as he is quite the dedicated gamer.
So he informs me that Kirby's Epic Yarn is apparently not well liked among the Kirby fandom because it's "too kiddy" and easy. I have a LOT of opinions about this but I won't go into that here.
Anyway, he asks me "how can you call yourself a Kirby fan if you haven't played the main games???" (he was a MAJOR gatekeeper) and started going on about how other Kirby games are much better.
Now this got me thinking-- his reaction to me saying I haven't played his favorite Kirby games should have been: "Oh you haven't played it? We could play together, I've got snacks at my place" or something like that.
THAT gives the rizz. Of course this only works if the girl in question already has given interest. But even though I already liked him, him invalidating my interests based on an arbitrary set of prerequisites was a total turn off.
And the thing is, whether I played one game or most, it wouldn't have mattered. Because nothing is ever good enough for The Gatekeeper. It's not about the media itself, it's the mindset.

Sometimes, I will come across your blog and read certain tags on certain pairs because, What? What? How are your thoughts my thoughts? How is someone else expressing (so perfectly) what I thought existed only in my head? The references (warm leftovers, please. Feel horribly proprietary over that poem.), the memes, the word choices. I know we all grew up on the same internet, but it's like we grew up in the same corner.
It rattles me each time it happens and yet, the next time I return, and wander through, reading along as if we were walking through my local arboretum and you were rambling and I was nodding along. Consider this ask my version of a reply in the arboretum world.
