hey bee, i wanna understand the watcher lore. can you help point me to the right place for it? or explain it, if it isnt too complicated?

here's where i say "it kind of doesn't actually matter".

hear me out: the thing is that if you are hanging out in the fandom, the watcher lore the fandom uses is like... a fandom invention. i've compared it to a sentinel/guide au before. it's not actually... a thing that is all that closely related to what happened in evo from my understanding.

like, the watcher stuff originally comes from the evo smp, an older smp of grian's. they were deities that ambiguously were also the audience, and liked to punish people being mean and give players weird riddles to solve. at the end of evo, grian joins them. also from evo are the listeners, who are enemies of the watchers (maybe defected watchers themselves? this seems unclear to me) that contacted jimmy and martyn, but largely only worked with jimmy.

the OTHER canon watcher stuff is "whatever martyn is doing over there with his own watcher lore", which i am sure someone who is much more of a martyn guy than me can give you a summary of. it's something along the lines of "watchers feed on emotions/are running the life series". he has explicitly stated that's only canon for him, however.

but MOSTLY? watchers are a collective fanon au that you can kind of use for whatever you need them for. as general rule they TEND to be evil (but not always), grian is one of them (and whether or not he has defected from them is a point in order in the fic), the fanon likes giving them a general biblical angel appearance, purple color, and mask (although ALSO not always; there's basically always either eye imagery or a mask though), they can be a stand-in for the audience or the pressures of being a creator (although not everyone does this), and frequently they have something to do with the life series (though not always). they're useful both as "i want something to be blatantly metaphorical for the audience" and "i need a deity/antagonistic force for my story" most of the time, and also for the ever-present grian angst.

they're fun to mess around with in my opinion! but also in my opinion if you're only writing hermitcraft stuff it's like... not really worth Worrying about "understanding watcher lore" because there isn't actually that much of it that's canon, most of it is just... stuff the fandom likes to do with it, you know?

we should stop excluding, fakeclaiming and witch hunting systems just for having mcyt alters

going in depth below but i just wanted to add a cut so it isnt a long post, apologies ^_^;

we should stop fakeclaiming in general because NOBODY is an expert, even professionals when we consider how little researched this disorder is. (we should still leave it up to them though...) but this specifically is the biggest issue ive seen across all platforms accessible to systems

to share our personal story so it makes a bit more sense, while the dream smp was still being played back in 2020 and nobody really cared or was aware of how shitty most of the people on it were, we took a lot of comfort in some streamers. that was because we were going through a rough time

alters will split for lots of reasons, even multiple at once, but it is mostly due to stress and trauma

im going to backtrack a little more to 2017/2018 when we first found out we were a system. we learned about it through a new friend of ours who was ALSO a system and it caused us to research it for ourselves. we didnt think it fit us at first, but things started fitting together and blah blah blah here we are today with excellent internal communication. a LOT of people found out they were systems at that time, because of the wave of education going on. dissociative disorders arent talked about in mainstream medias, school or even just daily life so this was the very first time lots of people were hearing about it. sound familiar? ill come back to this.

2020 was a very rough year for ALL of us, and im sure it affected more peoples home lives than just ours. it wouldnt be unusual in the slightest for these kids going through stressful events to take comfort or seek protection in these streamers characters, or even the streamers themselves.

it just so happened that the wave of system education on a more popular site like tiktok was happening around the same time. a popular site = information reaching more people. it gave some kids insight on how their own brain might be working, and they were researching it for themselves to see if it was true. some people might have been shocked, some people might have been happy to learn that this was why theyve suffered from these symptoms like breaks in memory. those people who were thankful for realizing it might have taken on the system identity very quickly, too quickly for others to realize what was going on and led to the conclusion that it just "cropped up out of nowhere".

so these kids going through stressful, worldwide events, having just found out that due to PAST traumas in their life that they are part of a system, are taking comfort in these roleplaying streamers. just because it was a popular media at the time doesnt mean it couldnt have affected people like this. do you understand what im saying. its very easy to seek protection from someone like technoblade or nikis character, or relate to ranboos character.

splitting differs from system to system. it can come with painful headaches, and it could take a very long or short time. for us, its painless enough to ignore, but takes a while. quick splitting could lead to fakeclaimers saying "alters cant just pop up out of nowhere!!!" but they could split quickly, if you are currently going through something stressful enough

the stress needed to split is subjective as well, and to a younger teenage child it could be less than your idea of stress at your grown age.

fakeclaimers also tend to say "well if you were really a system my words wouldnt affect you this much" but thats not necessarily accurate. they do affect people, they affect all systems. they support stigmas surrounding the disorder and make it harder for them to go away. it makes it harder for people to get diagnosed who have that privilege, it makes it harder for systems to find safe spaces, and its one of the most harmful things that could happen to any system on the internet.

the thought of "what if im faking" within the system is also common, not even just with systems but anyone with an invisible disorder, but i believe thats been covered by multiple other creators before so i wont talk about it too much. look it up if youre interested.

"but what about the people who have admitted theyre faking!" good on them for owning up to it! faking anything to fit in, but especially faking a DISORDER to fit in takes effort, and the attention seeking is a sign that something could have been wrong in the first place. so why would i judge them for it? yeah, it wasnt a good thing to do and could have harmed more than being harmless but in the end they admitted it, and everybody can go on with their day.

overall just be kind to any system you come across, whether theyre still "cringy", or they have mcyt alters, or any introject from a popular media. you dont know their life, its not your business and you shouldnt care so fucking much. go outside and feel the warmth of the sun and realize that it doesnt affect you at all. its not hurting anyone. the only one hurting the community youre "trying to help" is you.

People will say “isn’t it so ~crazy~ that people used to use kinning to only mean otherkin, like that they literally were something in a past life and now we use use it to mean we relate lel” like the tumblr or discord style “kinnie”/“ID”/whatever isnt always 100x more annoying and sometimes legitimately insidious than like traditional spiritual otherkin and therians who are really just a run of the mill form of pop culture spiritualism a la jediism. hmmmm ohh thats a. hard question. i’m into a lot bc I love a lot of varied genres Within them though- they may not fit your vibe. Top 3? I’ll try a top 3

I’d. Imagine since you’re here, you already know Empires smp (if you dont, how did you get here) so ill skip that but emotionally its here. and the other common ones- Dream smp and the Life series. Which you should Also watch

(list below!)

1. Mianite. /MIANITE/.

I’ve never been so quickly charmed by an smp before in it’s first season. Usually it takes a bit for SMPs to start ramping up and making sense of themselves but watching from Captain Sparklez position, you basically start the series AFTER the rules are already set in place.

We watch our titular main character Mr Revenge himself enter a world of gods and conflict where he has no interest in either. He doesn’t want to side with ‘good’ or ‘evil’— he wants to survive (A rather relatable feeling these days lol). He demands a third option and by god, does he get it.

Mianite does an exceptional job at keeping you hooked with personal interactions between players, Purges or main pvp moments, and natural lore that lends well to the rather unsteady alliances made throughout. Watching other povs isnt necessary but adds so much to the experience. I can’t recommend it more.

2. YDYD season 1 Achievement Hunter

If you can ignore a *single* person in there who’s done some rather awful things- then this series is to die for. The cast of Let’s Play AH play minecraft hardcore where, if you’re dead- you’re dead (hence the name).

What makes it different from OTHER series like 3rd life or X life is that instead of breaking apart into duos to fight each other, the entire group works /together/ to try and make the series as long as they can. And it’s in spite of this that people die, graves are made, people are lost, and one person still ends up being the winner.

It’s a twist on the genre I don’t /see/ a lot bc most hardcore series are very much Hunger Games esq in that you’re all trying to kill the other to survive the longest. And that- doesn’t really become a main motivator here. No one wants to be the last one standing. They already /know/ that’s lonely.

3. Outsiders SMP

So. Much. Love went into making this smp possible. It’s a finished series as well, with well over several hours of vods or at least 3 in youtube videos of content. It’s planned, organized, detailed with lots of World building but what matters most is the connections between people.

Everyone on the smp lives in a Clearing, a la Maze Runners, surrounded by a large wall and a maze beyond that which traps people when the gates close at night. Outsiders isnt afraid to talk about the difficult choices being in this situation gives you- brings morality into question and the worthwhileness of political powers in a place without them.

You don’t leave Outsiders with questions. Not unless you missed the answers. It wraps everything up in a neat little bow and I felt satisfied with how it all panned out. I think getting into the more /consistent/ lore rather than ‘improv but mostly fucking around and then whoops lore’ is important bc not many ppl actually give this area of mcrp attention and i want this brought into spotlight as a shining representation of what Good Consistent MCRP planning and communication is.

im def the type analyzing the technical or trend side of mcyt content creation (someday i will make the bdubs thumbnail analysis) and whenever jev's content comes up i really think about it. (should be said what im describing w his videos rn isnt a jab! he talked about trying to make one-off videos hitting trendy subjects and thats exactly what hes doing, and so i want to mention what i notice)

jev stated in one of his previous HC videos that his videos were on a decline. he pointed out some things that i imagine casual watchers wouldnt ever consider, but theres some key reasons as to why jev's HC series was doing poorly. Some he points out and others are things I also realized.

people are not likely to click on videos with episode numbers because they don't want to jump into a series they know nothing about. in turn, many people have started to not put episode numbers in their series titles at all (out of HC, bdubs. but youll notice this for other kinds of non-smp videos too). So when this is done, people wont assume it is a long running series, and are more likely to click it. "One off" content implies videos that are... one-off. Think snapshot reviews, build challenges, hardcore challenges... So two potential ways to improve views/have a better time in the algorithm is to drop numbers of episodes. No, not The only solution but its a pretty important thing.

this is a huge factor imo... how many recommended/home page videos do you get thrown at you related to minecraft that have nothing to do with series (or you wouldnt know due to the title)? All I get are hardcore videos, snapshot videos, and i have also gotten loads of Joel's (smallishbeans) "i did [thing] in minecraft" which have a shit ton of views. Those videos from him are a blatant example of "one off" videos that also try to pull you in with a simple title and premise.

Now looking back at jev. he said he was going to try these more one off videos, and hes started that with things like "things you didnt know about minecraft". the interesting part to me too is noticing 'repeats' of these kinds of videos... jev is not the first person to do a video like that, so you would think "why would you make it?" well, the thing is. youtub doesnt care. its gonna throw your video around and there is a good chance your "things you didnt know about minecraft" video may come up for some random person instead of someone else. it may show up for some kid who hadnt seen someone else's and so yours is the first. (and lets be real if 11 year olds are finding it they probably wont care its another and think 'oh boy, more things i didnt know about minecraft!')

On the smaller side I just notice how different some parts of newer videos have become- for some reason its kind of a thing to use shaders, a lot. most people wont use it through an entire video but often times its the intro. some people use shaders all the time. Additionally intros almost always consist of a user in f5 mode, facing the camera. I am sure that f5 mode thing started quite a while back (in terms of new mcyt) but caring about the visuals of an intro wasn't important a long time ago, it was hardly considered lol.

every time i think about these things its like im storing it in my brain for me to use but, hell if i am ever gonna make enough videos to apply it. regardless, the trend of videos can be seen in youtubers you watch if you look close enough. but even so we have lots of 'old school' people here that don't always change to fit these trends. if they have a loyal long time following, its less likely they will. (usually if its not titles- which i think is more common now- you may more obviously see it in thumbnail styles) but theres always a potential of people shifting slightly because the algorithm isnt playing very nice.

his wings are just as big as himself

he has a diamond headpiece that he keeps hidden under his hoodie, it was given to him by skeppy and he keeps it on so he always has a little bit of his best friend with him

if skeppy loses a canon life then bad loses a canon life (canonically), but bad only loses a canon life when skeppy loses a canon life if they're on the smp at the same time (for example, if skeppy is on the smp the same time bad is on the smp and he loses a canon life, bad will lose a canon life. meanwhile if skeppy is on the smp and bad isnt on the smp and skeppy loses a canon life then bad wont lose any lives.)

bad will purr if shown physical affection

his wings and tail gently flap + wag if hes happy, but if hes uncomfortable he'll whimper

the egg existed years before bad existed, and bad only found out about it not too long ago (the egg sort of grew from the ground, which is why it took over the area its located now)

bad can control his height. if he wanted to be over 20 feet tall he can and if he wanted to be under 3 feet tall he can

when he turns taller than he is (9'6) he sometimes laughs or teases skeppy because of how short he is

hes got a natural form, a full form and a 'human form'

bad was born in the nether and had found sapnap as a baby blaze when he was eleven--and he decided to take him with him

sapnap considers bad as his father meanwhile bad considers sapnap as a little brother

whenever bad is alone he'll have panic attacks, and he finds that reading helps calm him down

he hates when its too quiet but hates when its too loud

bad has Kakologophobia which is the fear of bad words (which includes hearing them, thinking about them, saying them or reading them). he was taught that if you ever swore, your mouth would get washed out with soap and its happened to him before, so he always was afraid of them because he didnt want that person to get their mouth washed out with soap

bad isnt as gullible as cc!bad is. he has trust issues and doesnt believe people as easy as cc!bad does

he likes to test people by shapeshifting into things like stacks of dollar bills or a suitcase of cash to see if they'll turn it into the police or steal it for themselves

he doesnt brush his hair and its often very messy

he goes to bad sometimes to help him fix it (bad is basically his personal hair dresser)

skeppy was a huge troublemaker when he was little and became a wanted

skeppy has a slight speech impediment and often stutters at least once or twice every sentence.

skeppy loves anything shiny, doesnt matter what it is he will take it

sometimes he just chills in amethyst caves because he loves the shine and the colour that it gives off

skeppy has a random chest located in him and bad's mansion that he keeps diamonds, emeralds, amethyst, gold, and anything else shiny inside of

skeppy met bad when he was 17, meanwhile bad met skeppy when he was 22. skeppy didnt give bad any decision other than saying "we're friends now, you have no say" and they just became best friends.

after skeppy lost his first canon life, he had became blue skeppy. along with that, he's lost a lot of memory from when he was red skeppy and a little bit from when he was blue in the past

he and bad havent seen each other ever since bad accidently pushed skeppy into the lava.

skeppy, if bad and the egg were falling off of a bridge, would save bad. he believes that bad would save the egg if him and it were falling off of a bridge because he hopped off the smp before he could hear bad's answer

Ive accidentally reached the post limit so Ive basically been doing my liveblog in my notes app, i wrote all of this while watching the February 4th 2022 vod

Actually, now that I think about it, I think I was definitely wrong about Dreams manipulation tactics changing with his goals. Like, i still dont think he wants to work with Sam or be 'friends' with him like with Tommy during the exile arc, but he is still doing the thing of breaking people down and then building them up with a fascimile of kindness so that theyll listen to him

Im assuming the time passed irl is the same as the time passed in-universe which means that Sam has been alone in the prison for 4 days but Dream is a lying motherfucker whos telling him that its only been one day

Okay now hes saying its been 2 days but hes still lying

HE DID GET HIM A CLOCK IM GONNA LOSE IT

Okay he wants to compare hkmself and Sam, Im very curious bc this will hopefully grant us some insight into how Dream like, actually percieves himself and his actions

Okay, two things:

1. Dream being like "[the evil bunker full of everyones sentimental items] was just theater" has some serious Wilbur vibes ngl

2. Dream is sooooooo obsessed with Tommy istg

Dream is asking Sam what bad things hes done aside from manipulate Tommy and be dramatic and Sam is like "uhhhhh idk tbh......" as though Dream isnt the guy responsible for Lmanberg blowing up thrice

Sam is basically asking Dream if the things Dream did were wrong/bad and its like, you cant do that, you cant cushion your opinions on someones bad action in this kind of insecurity, especially if youre talking to someone known to be manipulative!!

Ouhhghhh the way Dream can basically make up anything he wants about Tommys time in exile because barely anyone, but esepcially not Sam, visited him

"How was it my fault that Tommy was exiled" I dont even have anything to say, Im just kinda enamoured by the realization of how little people other than Tommy and maybe Wilbur actually know about the exile

Dream just mentioned the Egg and 1. I had already basically completely forgotten about that and 2. The timeline of Drea involvement with the Egg is like, he briefly checked on it back when everything was still kinda kicking of, didnt worry about it for weeks or even months and then he was in jail for a year and he basically completely missed all of the Egg Lore like damn, I hope Punz properly explained all that bullshit to him lol

God, Im projecting so hard rn but Dream weaponizing his own genuine suffering in order get what he wants which also shields him from having to confront the ways it was made him suffer and how it actually affected him is so relatable

Ive been spoiled so I know theyre gonna try and make c!Dream more sympathetic later on and i know a lot of people really hate that and honestly, I think a lot of it comes down to the fact that he didnt get his own POV/only got it very late which gives people less opportunity to sympathize or empathize with him and also really dehumanizes him. Idk this is kinda complex and I'll probably make a seperate post about it

Im going to lose my mind, Dreams monologue about how everyone is the hero in their own story and a villain in many others literally sounds like a thesis statement, like if the Dream SMP had a kids show-esque "message" like so many people inexplicably want it to, it would be this more than literally anything else

goddammit now im mad over the emduo qpr discourse again. everyone owes me so much fucking money for that shit. i know i wasnt the best at wording but genuinely just fucking amazing how me going "hey i want qprs to be seen as their own form of relationship that isnt just headcanons and is its own form of shipping also i think people are weird about how they depict qprs by only ever depicting a romantic relationship but saying /p or by saying shit like 'qpps are platonic soulmates' and not going into how they can often be intimate relationships that isnt always as simple as best friends who get married also its kind of fucking weird that in its own way it contributes to pushing aside a woman whose an important figure to focus on two men and with how ppl treat that woman even outside of this its concerning me" got turned into uh.

the idea that i (an aro person) am arophobic and also against polyam people (even though i wasnt talking about polyam hcs) and also was calling people racist and fatphobic and misogynistic (people are already weird about kristins weight and i felt uncomfortable that her relationship with phil ic was being pushed away when its. canon. i know people dont think she is but she is canon shes the supposed reason a forest grew by the commune and she possessed phil once shes canon to the smp imagine if ppl said drista wasnt canon or something. and some of my discomfort came from the fact that shes a fat woc) and also was "playing the victim" and pulling "the minor card" (i was being harassed and expressed multiple times that the discourse was setting off my paranoia and making me spiral every time i got better and it was upsetting that it was mainly people in their 20s doing this to me, a 16yr old at the time)

and also i guess the idea that I thought qprs were nothing other than best friends?? (that was the entire thing i was arguing against . i wanted qprs to be treated as separate from strictly platonic and strictly romantic relationships. because they are by definition . i wanted them to be treated seriously and for people to stop calling them headcanons because it felt like it was delegitimizing that qprs are a unique kind of relationship and one thats often intimate and heavily committed)

like. auugh. sure if i could go back i would fix some of my wording but i was (and still am) a Teenager . who was uncomfortable and got pushed into spiralling to a point where i couldnt properly escape it (i was condescendedly told to go touch grass but i . Was going outside. consistently. it helped for a short while only for the drama to be shoved in my face all over again which kept setting me off and i couldnt manage to switch out + it was summer during a pandemic like. what else could i do but be online) and like. now i still have lingering trauma and for a good while it ruined techno and phil related content for me. i was terrified of that side of the fandom, only recently have i really been able to shake that off. its scary to know theres still people who think im arophobic or believe all the shit people said about me. when one of my friends tried to defend me one of the main people talking shit found their post and went on to publically talk shit about me to them and it made me. so fucking paranoid that they were tracking my name or some shit

and idk. knowing that for so many people it was just a blip of discourse to meme about and pass on is. a weird experience. that month was horrible for me. it led to me getting nauseous about even romantic shipping in the community (even now i can only really deal with strictly canon dsmp romance) and with how many issues i already had with romance repulsion and figuring out more and more about how alienated i felt from fandom spaces because of my aromanticism it was. i dont know. i still taste bile in my throat every time i think about it.

ranboo starting a "new dream SMP project" lowkey means nothing to me cus his lore has like 3 dropped plotlines and adding a new one really isn't the way to go (unless the new project is continuing the previous lore wich doesn't seem probable)
