Shadow and bone rant

Was shadow and bone S2 a good one? It was enjoyable. It was watchable. That's it.

For those of us who have read the books it was a huge mess.

Let's talk first about the grisha trilogy.

They joined book 2 and 3 (and crooked kingdom for some fucking reason, but I'll get to that later) and just rushed through the plot.

While I'm not the biggest fan of the trilogy and SOC is one of my favorite books ever, I still think the crows had no business being there. They just took too much screentime, something I usually wouldn't complain about but now I am. The sword subplot alone would have been okay. The rest? What the fuck was that??

Due to this, we didn't get to see the actual story of Sab. And don't get me wrong, I wasn't expecting a word by word adaptation, but this felt.... The characters weren't themselves.

Nikolai felt incredibly plain. He was just a nice guy. But where was his wit? His charm? His "my mother was an oyster, I'm the pearl". Where was his personality?

Also, he never loved Alina, and Alina didn't love him. Why would they push this narrative?

Everyone loves the darkling because he is charismatic and a master manipulator. This season he was just a dying guy. He didn't feel threatening. He didn't feel like the villain at all.

Zoya was completely sidelined for Alina. My girl had like 3 scenes and she didn't do much. In the book we saw rare moments of vulnerability, saw her friendship with Alina and genya grow. But she was still the cold bitch everyone loves because that's what makes Zoya Zoya.

They offed David just like that, and again, replaced him with Alina in the triumvirate. And I'm so mad about this. The triumvirate was made up of the three leaders that the orders chose to lead them during the war (except for genya). There are one of each order so the darkling's favoritism wouldn't repeat, so all the orders would stand on equal ground. Again, they were leaders. Political leaders. Now we have 2 summoners and a colporalki. What about the materialki? They lost their place in Nikolai's circle.

Also, the little reunion of Alina, genya and Zoya at the end was more like "uwu besties hanging out" than, "we have the responsibility to lead the orders and rebuild the country"

Mal just left. JUST LIKE THAT. we have a season full of Malina kissing and vowing they'll spend their lives together after they destroy the fold and kill the darkling, and the dude just leaves. Not just leaves, BECOMES STURMHOND. Do the writers know what sturmhond means to Nikolai? He would NEVER let any other person, least of all Mal take over the role.

And the twins left with him. The twins would never leave Nikolai.

Also Tolya, canonically ace, giving inej heart eyes????

And Alina. Where was her internal struggle? She kept her powers and is ready to become queen? And marry Nikolai??? She never wanted the crown. She never loved Nikolai. She only wanted to disappear into the sunset with mal and open an orphanage to help children like her. She literally told Nikolai that Zoya would make a better queen, hinting at zoyalai.

The whole point of Alina's character was that she was just a girl. She was just a girl turned saint, something she didn't want, with an enormous power she never asked for. She was just a girl who wanted a normal life but had to play the hero at 17. By the end of ruin and rising, she is exhausted, weary, drained. She faked her own death so people would leave her alone, so she could retire to the middle of nowhere with Mal and live a quiet life.

Now they're making her Nikolai's betrothed, future queen of Ravka, and... Evil? After she fought so hard to not become a monster like the darkling??

And where's the religion??? A huge part of the grishaverse revolves around religion, especially in the grisha trilogy. The manipulation of information and public image, twisting the narrative so it fits your goals, the zeal of the masses based on that exact narrative that those in power created.... There was none of that. Only inej called Alina "Sankta Alina" but they never showed what becoming Sankta was like for Alina.

This was just... Ugh. It was not BAD, but I'm so disappointed, especially for the crows, so part 2?

OKAY!! We are a day away from autumn, the fall menus have kicked in at most establishments, and I love the fall season so I was like "I want to have an event around it," and that's what this is!

I think of this prompt and I think of slow dancing but you don't have to send in a slow song if you're thinking of like, a group dance type thing in a city square! Send in a character, a gender pref and the song of your choice and I will write a 1-3k word fic involving the characters dancing while the song is playing in the background.

I think I might have fallen in love- realization fics! I am looking for spooky fluff/fluff set in autumn that just carries with it the cozy feeling that picks up as autumn starts and the weather cools down. Ch-3 ~The journey back home~

Anaya woke up with a splitting headache and it didn't take her long to realize that the floor beneath her was swiftly swaying. She was on the very ship she had attempted to break into. Her arms and legs were in iron chains and she was in a scrawny little room that looked nothing more than a storage space.

She looked around in her tattered clothes, her cheeks were bruised and her hair badly tangled. The chains were immensely bigger than her feet. There were people around her in similar states, chained and in tattered clothing. Men, women, children. The ship was swifting harshly, and a pungent smell was all around them, making her feel queasy.

She tried looking out the window to her left. The sun was shining brightly and they were nowhere near the first harbor. Someone entered the room with heavy footsteps. It was the same heartrender who had made her go unconscious last night, or whatever day it was.

"Oh good you're awake. The general demands to speak with you at lunch" He spoke

"I- how long was I out for" She managed to speak

"2 days, to be exact" he replied

A women in a white dress came inside and took off the chains. Her head began to spin as soon as she stood up so she leaned on the wall for support. She was escorted out of the room with the heartrender. He led her to a hall that looked like you could fit five small boats in it. There was a table set up in the center, and the Darkling was sitting in the front.

"Ah, miss Nasrazeen. Please, join us" he gestured Anaya towards a chair

She hesitantly moved forward then took a seat. "Why did you bring me with you?" She finally spoke

"Because you are much more valuable than being a petty little thief in the dirty streets of Ketterdam".

"I had a life" She glared at him

"You were barely keeping yourself alive and doing downgraded work when you can use your abilities for good, and serve your country"

"And what about the people I'd known there?" she asked, wondering how Inej and Jesper, would be feeling. Kaz would surely be furious. She still owed Per Haskell and the dregs and she had ran away without fulfilling her debt.

"They''ll be quick to forget about your existence. They don't need to you, but Ravka does" he replied

"I don't want this" her voice began to tremble

"But you once did, didn't you? Your parents did" he remained calm. "Tell me, would they have wanted you to spend your days in a place filled with thieves and criminals, surrounded by people who do whatever benefits their own needs and have no dignity. Or would they have wished for you to carry on their legacy and serve your country, along with people who work for the benefit of their country?"

Her heart sank deep in her chest, and her hands began to shake. She hated that the darkling was right, they did want her to serve her country. She thought of how ashamed they would be, if they saw her today, what she had become.

Anaya was sitting alone, writing in her diary. Her face brightened up, as she saw her parents enter. She ran to them and they wrapped their arms around her..

"How was your day, honey?" Her father asked her with a smile

"It was okay, but, Zoya beat me in the test this time" Anaya replied, with a saddened look

"That's okay, hun. You already are the best in everything, one test doesn't determine your worth" her father said to her

"Do you think I'll be a good soldier, dad?" She asked after a long pause

'Of course you will" he took her hand into his own. "You'll be the most skilled soldier that the second army would have seen. I am entirely sure of that" he smiled and looked her in the eye.

She didn't have the courage to say anything after that. She had failed them, in every possible way, and she hated herself for that.

The journey to Os Alta lasted for about a few week. After getting off the ship, the Grisha went in separate carriages than the servants. Anaya traveled in a carriage with three other members of the Etherealki. The journey to the little palace was silent and she didn't conversate much with the others and only answered whatever they asked her . They soon stopped as they reached their destination.

They sun had set when they had reached. But the Little Palace was clearly visible because of the lights near them. Seeing it, had brought a wave of nostalgia to her. It felt like she had been pulled into a dream, it didn't truly felt real to her. She hadn't hoped to return, to see all of it again. She was afraid to go inside, but somehow forced herself to do it. She dragged her feet through the huge gates of the Little Palace.

things I'm excited to see in season 2 of shadow & bone

SPOILERS AHEAD!

just thought I would make this little list so I can look back and see if these scenes live up to my expectations:

- obviously just seeing the crows together with more people in the mix

-whatever the FRICK that kanej scene is with the knife

- kaz and nina. literally any interaction. (hoping Nina teases him about his hair or something)

- seeing however they introduce Wylan, esp cause we don’t see them meet him in the books

- Nina/matthias angst

- Jesper's backstory

- curious to see what they do with sturmhond/nikolai reveal, if anything

- just some good Nikolai one-liners

-David and Genya CRUMBS

-maybe even the I know metal speech if we’re getting ruin and rising too

- honestly I am equally just as scared to see it but kaz’s backstory and Jordie. it’s gonna make me cry isn’t it? (I'm asking my future self)

- ruthless kaz pleeeease

-kanej ANGST. I love them but we need more angst. we need more doubt built in inej about whether or not he cares. (honestly idk if we’ll get this)

-but then at the same time I want cute moments with them too

-I just want it ALLLLL

My review on S&B season 2

So I binged watch Shadow and Bone in on sitting and OMGGGGGGG.

OMGGGGGGGGG

WOWWW

THAT WAS A ROLLERCOASTER RIDE AND I HAVE A FEW THOUGHTS

PLOT

The plot was rushed like it was there is no denying it, but it was also fun in the best way possible. IMO The writers really aced it for TV. You can tell they actually respect the source material and understand it well. I know that a lot of controversy is surrounding season 2 but I would like to point out that I think the writers and actors did BRILLIANT with what time they had. Like I am pretty sure I saw a tweet that said that the writers weren’t sure that they would get the green light for season 3 and with that in mind they were exceptional. They did remove quite a few scenes from R&R and S&S, I really missed alina’s white hair and MAL’s “I am become Blade tattoo”. And as someone who has read the books I missed the character development that was done but at the same time, I have come to realise that adaptations are different from source materials and it’s best to seperate them both. That way you enjoy it more. And my friend (Who hasn’t read the books) loved it even more then me.

Nikolai hiring the crows was absolutely genius, it was a really good introduction

The Crows having to steal the sword plotline was so good was so goodd

The transition for Kaz’s flashback was so good ( Can I just say that I loved the VFX for this season)

KANEJ AND HELNIK ANGST ALMOST KILLED ME

WESPER BEING SO IN LOVE IS AAAHHHHHHHHHH IN THE BEST WAY POSSIBLE

THE ENDING THOUGH OKAY IK UNPOPULAR OPINION BUT I LOVED THE ENDING BECAUSE ALINA IS SUCH A SLAY IN THIS SEASON AND HER USING THE CUT AND I WAS SO HAPPY THAT SHE DIDN’T LOSE HER POWERS LIKE IK THAT THE THEME WAS POWER CORRUPTS BUT IDFC, LIKE LET IT CORRUPT. INFACT I WANT IT TO CORRUPT. I CANT WAIT FOR NEXT SEASON IF ITS HAPPENING

The fight scenes were really impressive like it was done so innovatively.

The plot was like 7.5/10 for me because ik that its a TV show but I still love the books too much, However, my friend gave it a 9.5/10 (She wanted more of the crows)

2 major complaints I do have is that WHY THE FUCK IS DAVID DEAD??????

and my 2nd complaint is please give me zoyalai crumbs, I wanted some banter but I was disappointed.

ACTING

the acting done by each and every charcater was phenomenal. Ben Barnes was amazing as usual, Jessie mei lei added her beautiful depth to Alina’s character, Archie renaux make Mal’s character so much more three dimensional, NIKOLAI, TOLYA,TAMAR AND WYLAN. OMGGG. When I tell you they were fucking perfect like their expressions, their dialogue, their attitude. Jaw droppingly amazing. Daisy was so good as Genya this season like her raw emotion could literally be felt throught the screen. Her acting literally made me hate the Darkling so much. Amita was amazing as Inej, she as born for this role and danielle and Callahan have such amzing chemistry I can cry. Kit young is amazing, I love him so much. I wanted Sujaya to have more screen time because she is amazing but i know she had conflicting schedules but still :(

Freddy carter though,

WHAT THE FUCK

IT WAS LIKE SOMEONE PLUCKED OUT KAZ FROM THE BOOKS AND WAS LIKE HERE YOU GO AND HAVE THE MOST HEART WRENCHING STORY BE DONE IN THE BEST WAY POSSIBLE. LIKE HE KILLED. HE ABSOLUTELY SLAYED WITH THE ACTING. I WAS FLABBERGASTED. OMFGGGG. WHAT WAS THAT. LIKE FREDDY CARTER IS KAZ BREKKER. PERIOD.

OVERALL THE ACTING WAS A 10/10. I could not imagine a more perfect cast.

Conclusion

I Liked the show, had fun with it. The best way to enjoy it is as Leigh said,” Think of it as a fanfiction.” Sepereating the show from the book is the best thing to do for adaptation guys. I understand why people may not like it but still fucking watch it. IDNC that you didnt like it. WATCH IT. I need my Ice heist spin off. <3

Overall it was 8.5/10 ( ik the average is mathematically wrong but idc this is the rating i felt right with)

okay okay my shadow and bone season 2 hot takes are burning me from the inside out so here we go:

these are in no particular order but sadly it did feel kind of like a miss for me with nikolai :/ i was worried it was going to be way worse but there were a few changes that were just Not It for me. like you CANNOT just bring in Dominik and have him still be alive. he should’ve been dead the whole time, because that’s nikolai’s whole thing. he has his charming prince / dashing privateer / all around witty fun guy façade, and underneath it is grief. over a normal commoner, who died wastefully in an unimportant battle. it MATTERS that that death matters so much to nikolai

AND it’s really not the same for him to get randomly wounded 0.02 seconds before the civil war is completely over, and then later realize some weird magic shit is going on with the wound. like instead of being DELIBERATELY made into a monster and then spending weeks? months? however long as a mostly mindless monster, unable to help his friends or his country and lowkey maybe eating people. like that’s that 👏 good 👏 shit 👏 .

it also matters that he’s not visibly scarred afterwards? like literally “king of scars” hello? even if people outside his inner circle don’t know what really happened they still think the darkling tortured him for months or whatever.

anyway the point is the show needed to hurt nikolai a lot more.

kaz was perfect i love him, love how they delivered on his story, definitely the thing this season landed the best.

BUT it does somewhat irk me that pekka is still in the mix after kaz’s takedown. he runs away, and then just as he’s thinking about maybe coming back, inej finishes it and he’s just OUT. the last chapter of the duology is him just being like “i can’t DEAL with how vicious these teens are i’m too old for this shit i’m FINISHED”. i just think kaz brekker would not be satisfied with him still being in hellgate having any power whatsoever.

LOVED how little mattias content there was. cut him out entirely. five of crows.

giving the darkling a weird underling with bad bangs and 90s lipstick and spending so much time on her was a strange move considering how many other things they were trying to cover, like y’all don’t have room to be adding new OCs.

JUSTICE FOR DUNYASHA why was inej fighting some random taxidermy man instead. her appearance in crooked kingdom always DELIGHTS me because she just shows up out of nowhere declaring herself to be inej’s great rival and being psychosexually obsessed with her and inej is just ?????? because she has no idea who this fucking person is. changing her to some random dude is a homophobic attack on me personally.

i am glad they gave jesper some serious moments this season finally, but also a little sad with how much they rushed the grisha stuff for him. i think it’s probably an inevitable book-to-movie thing but they didn’t do enough with how much hiding his powers was fundamental to who he is. it’s like, the root of his frankly suicidal recklessness and addiction and shame. his feelings about his powers are tied to his mother and her death but also to his father and how he taught Jesper to lie about himself and also made him feel ashamed/guilty to have powers. AND most importantly it’s not just parent stuff, it’s a response to the world around him where grisha are hunted and persecuted and kidnapped and enslaved and conscripted and experimented on. it’s not just that he’s sad about his mom. it’s one of the many responses we see in the books from grishas towards a world that is so hostile to them. you can’t just make it about the personal circumstances. the social and political ones have an impact too.

i do get why they never get into it but man. i also missed jesper’s pathetic fucked up crush on kaz. just another moment where the show provided the outer show (jesper being charming and having plenty of little flings and encounters) but not the knife-twist beneath it (him pining for kaz all those years and both of them kind of knowing it but never saying anything about it, and kaz just absolutely 100% not into him like that but not NOT stringing him along with little bits of kindness, unintentionally or intentionally). like one of the things that is great about wylan and jesper is that it’s jesper deciding finally that he deserves more than waiting for little scraps of nothing from kaz and just going on a date with a nice boy, y’know?

i wish nina and inej had more friendship moments :c they haven’t known each other as long in the show. :c they’re supposed to be besties. :c i need them to be in love. :c

okay that’s all the hottest of my hot takes i think, overall i had a lot of fun with it and the main takeaway was that the kaz stuff was /chefkiss

You woke up in something like a basement. Your hands are tied, but your mouth is not taped.

You: HELP! HELP!

You heard footsteps near you, but you couldn't see the person because it was very dark.

Unknown kidnapper: No one is going to hear you down here.

You: Who are you? Where i am? Where's Nikolai?

Unknown kidnapper: You have to worry about yourself, not about your prince!

You: Let me go!

Unknown kidnapper: Cooperate and I might decide to let you go! And not to kill you.

You: Okay....

The stranger came out of the room you are in and heard him calling people named Inej and Jesper.

The man came back.

You: Why do you need me?!

A calm female voice answers you: We need you for a job.

You: Whyy?

The girl: Because you're the sun saint!

You: Where are we?! Are we still in the palace?! Nikolai will search for me!

No one answered your question, so they walked out and left you. Turns out you're on a ship to Ketterdam.

When you go ashore, they let you go, but you don't run, because there is no way to return to your home, to Nikolai. You help them with their work and after 2 months, which was longer than expected for the crows,they buy you a ticket to Ravka.

When you return to the Grand Palace, you are already caught at the threshold by all the Grishas. They immediately lead you to Nikolai's chambers. On the way there, Nadia and Marie tell you that shortly after they announced you as disappeared , the royal family dies of some disease and only Nikolai remains alive. Days and nights he is looking for information about you. Since he is already king, his schedule was very busy, but he still found time to look for you.In general, he almost got sick from worry. When you reach the king's chambers, you see Nikolai hanging over his desk. The others closed the door after you and left.

He had lost quite a bit of weight, he looked tired, his eternal enthusiasm had been replaced by worry and pain, and his lovely blond hair was matted.

He didn't look up from the desk

You: Nikolai...

His head snapped up and he looked at you. Happiness and relief were written on his face.

Nikolai: Y/n....Is that really you?

You nodded smiling. A tear make its way down your cheek: I missed you, moi tsar!

Nikolai dropped all his work, closed the distance between you with a few steps and lifted you into the air.

You: Whoa don't pick me up, you're not strong enough!

Nikolai: Oh sweetheart I'm not that skinny!

You cried and rested your head on his chest.

You: You don't look good! I'm worried!

Nikolai: I always look good, dear!

Lol the Darkling, so unhinged. It does strike me that like no one understands Kaz’s motivations and connection to the Darkling given he’s afraid to show his vulnerabilities, talk about the blackmail, admit he’s in over his head and the Darkling appears to be just using Kaz to outsiders.

One thing I’m curious about is whether Nikolai and the others understand he’s touch adverse. Kaz speculated Nikolai might’ve guessed but that would be another ??? for them in what is happening with Kaz and the Darkling. On that actually, I wonder if Kaz’s backstory will ever be shared with anyone in this fic- Darkling obviously wants to know and kaz had thought about how he hasn’t even shared it with Inej.

It is kind of funny that as much as he's stressing "I am not the Darkling's pet and I am not in love with him" he hasn't even considered throwing out how much more the Darkling is into him than he is into the Darkling but at that point he thinks it's just really not that relevant to anyone who isn't him. Like at this point he's pretty sure if he said "actually the Darkling really wants me and I'm just using him for power" everyone would be like "mmhmm okay kaz whatever you need to tell yourself" so what's the point.

As for the touch aversion, Nikolai has Kaz's intense reaction to him putting an arm around him to play around with in his brain because that is definitely not how normal people react to something like that, but he might not have jumped straight to touch-aversion as opposed to "just really fucking hates me for some reason" except that he did have several conversations with Inej and Jesper planning how best to "rescue" Kaz, and although they wouldn't outright tell him Kaz has problems with physical touch it probably set off some alarm bells in his head the way they advocated to minimize the amount of manhandling people did of him.

Strikes against him realizing Kaz is touch averse would be him sharing a bed with the Darkling every night and how incredibly close they were when he walked in on them while they were discussing the Darkling's name.

Really it's all kind of in a category of "a lot of things are fucked up about that guy and until they're relevant to me or useful to my cause i'm just going to save it as a problem for Later Nikolai"

No one else other than Nikolai has really connected the dots that there's any sort of actual phobia going on because everyone else gives him a huge personal space bubble by nature of really not wanting to be around him anyway/generally being afraid of him. They're not thinking he has any kind of phobia, but everyone in general is kind of ???? about Kaz being intimate with anyone just because he really doesn't seem like the kind of person who would be into that.

anyone hearing rumors back in ketterdam is definitely like "what the fuck is going on over there?????"

So actually re:backstory, one element keeping him from sharing anything from the Darkling is the fact that the Darkling used Kaz's old name at one point, meaning Kaz does know that the Darkling knows more about Kaz's past than anyone else does somehow. It hasn't come up again because Kaz has specifically avoided thinking about the implications of that, but on a subconscious level it's keeping him from opening up about any of that with the Darkling on his own because he already feels the betrayal of the Darkling possibly taking some of it before he was ready to give it.

Much of Kaz's backstory is something he's never shared with anyone so it's not like there's any way the Darkling could figure it out without Kaz willingly sharing it, meaning actually sharing it with him would be giving away very precious currency. If Kaz ever learns the Darkling's name or more about his own past it might make him more inclined to share, but it's very doubtful unless he's in the position of realllllllly reallly needing to regain the Darkling's trust...which...okay is not entirely impossible.

Okay. I’ve given it some thought, so here’s my two cents for the fandom:

Overall, I enjoyed season 2. I did. I binged the whole thing in less than two days, it was THAT good. And I’m rewatching it while I still can bc I won’t have Netflix anymore at the end of the month (thanks for ending the password sharing bullshit Netflix, y’all are losing five clients in a single go, congratulations). So just listen.

I had so much fun watching this, through and through. I laughed, I mourned, I aww’d, I nearly ripped my hair out at the character shenanigans (looking at you, Kaz). It was GOOD, it was cool. The changes, though... I’m not entirely sure I’m all about them. I’ll speak for the Six of Crows and King of Scars duologies because I’ve read those, I haven’t picked up the Shadow & Bone trilogy so I won’t touch up on those plots much because I have nothing to compare them to. I thought they were fine, it was fun watching it all play out and how it ended.

The good stuff first, then. The characters are all PERFECT. In fact, I think what held this show together so well was the characters themselves and seeing them all interact. WhiCH MEANS I NEED MORE TOLYA AND NINA BONDING OVER FOOD AND NIKOLAI AND KAZ TRYING TO OUTSMART EACH OTHER AND INEJ AND JESPER DYNAMICS AND-- You get it.

I guess I’m just... disappointed that it was all so rushed. Like, when I realized we were watching basically the whole plotline for Crooked Kingdom BEFORE Six of Crows, my whole heart dropped to my feet. It was like “woah, what?” What does this mean for the Crows’ future, then? And the reason why I’m disappointed is because I was expecting it all to come MUCH LATER when we have Six of Crows and Crooked Kingdom as it’s own show, just like the books.

This feels like... ew, it feels like fanservice. Like they didn’t know what to do with the Crows until they became relevant for the Shadow & Bone plot so they shoe-horned CK into it to play for time, and it made all those delicious scenes that were carefully built up in the story fall flat due to lack of context. Examples:

They killed Heleen off-screen so Inej won’t get to screw her over and get much deserved payback for being trafficked into sexual slavery;

We don’t get ANY Helnik development that culminates into that heartbreaking last scene, and in fact we don’t even get to see Nina and Matthias interact except for a couple of scenes from a distance and Matthias’ horny daydreaming;

We don’t get to see how Wylan not being able to read affected HIS ENTIRE LIFE until he ends up with the Crows;

We get a snippet of Jesper’s backstory but THAT’S IT;

Wesper was CUTE AS HELL I LOVE MY TWO LITTLE GAYS SO MUCH AAAAAA but again, I was looking forward to the slow burn;

Matthias allying with Pekka Rowlins in prison is kinda cool actually, I’m interested to see where that’s going plus the fact we’re not done with Rowlins yet, but I swear if they butcher Matthias’ arch for something more action packed and exciting, I am going to physically vomit;

Kaz breaking into the Slat to beat up Per Haskell’s gang as a one man army running on THE POWER OF TEENAGE HORNINESS, one of my most favorite scenes in the book that I was looking forward to, makes no sense because we never see the Dregs in the show again (that I remember, we’ll get back on that after a rewatch) so what was the point??

We got Kaz’s backstory, but it was spedrun through so it ends up not having much of an impact. I know if I had gone in blind without all I know from reading the Six of Crows duology, it wouldn’t have mattered much to me no matter how much I loved the character. We don’t even get to know Jordie much, and knowing a little about him is what makes his demise and Kaz’s story so crushing and compelling. This is one of the core rules of character writing, for fuck’s sake! I’m no professional but even I know this! If you don’t get to know the character, you can’t connect with that character and so anything that happens to them is just “oh that’s sad. ANYWAY.” Without having read the books, the whole thing falls apart! Can you tell how much I detest fanservice? I went into this show knowing basically nothing about it and I loved it because the story’s pace and the character moments and the twists were SO WELL CRAFTED AND PUT TOGETHER. Hell, this show is what got me running to the store to buy Six of Crows and devouring it all the way to Rule of Wolves, so again, and I cannot stress this enough, what the fuck is going on here??

Individually, the scenes related to Crooked Kingdom were great. Pretty decently adapted, and like I said, perfect character emulation. The only one I didn’t enjoy as much was Kaz helping Inej with her arm because the baggage that was supposed to build it up is missing, so it got watered down to him just cleaning that cut instead of battling through his touch aversion and winning just long enough for him to actually bandage her and treat her wounds and even managing to kiss her neck! It feels like such a victory in the book before it all comes crashing down because we got A BOOK AND A HALF worth of mutual pinning and learning how crippling it is for Kaz to even think about skin-to-skin contact. The scene I read over and over again for days, cut down to a couple of minutes of basically not much. Sad.

Also they’re setting up for Tolya to fall in love with Inej (which I can’t blame him for, I mean, it’s Inej) and I’m like “uh, NO?” Not just because Kanej is THE SHIP for me, but because... Okay, no, I admit it’s just because Kanej is THE SHIP for me, but that’s my fault. Who knows, maybe they’ll make something interesting with this. I mean, they wouldn’t permanently break up one of the most iconic couples in literature just for the giggles or (dreaded) subversion of expectations, right?... Right..........?

For the rest of it, because I read the King of Scars duology, I’m kinda mad at some of the things they changed because I was expecting Alina and Mal to have a happily ever after taking care of their 500 orphans in Keramzin? I was expecting Genya to have SOME happiness before David is killed, just cut this girl some slack, would ya??? And Mal becoming Sturmhond?? Where did THAT come from??????? WHAT ABOUT INEJ GETTING HER OWN SHIP FROM KAZ AND FOLLOWING HER NEW-FOUND DREAM OF BECOMING THE SCURGE OF ALL SLAVERS?? Sure, she’s gotta find her brother first and then they gotta find their family and all, that’s fine I guess?? At least were giving THAT some room to breathe!!

*Sigh* Look. I got a couple of theories for why this is happening.

One: as previously mentioned, Leigh Bardugo and the rest of the team didn’t know what to do with the Crows so they put in the plot of Crooked Kingdom to buy time for them. I believe it’s well understood within fandom that Shadow & Bone couldn’t have gotten as big of a deal as it did if it weren’t for the Crows, but the Crows would have stood on their own easily enough without Shadow & Bone, so they needed to give them screen time from episode one forward to keep the audience, like they did with season 1.

Two: Leigh Bardugo and the rest of the team don’t trust Netflix to renew the show to conclusion OR green-light the Six of Crows show (which, y’know, fair), and their faith is so shaky they decided it was best to have Siege & Storm and Ruin & Rising put into a single season (heard book readers say this is what happened), plus bring in the Crooked Kingdom plot to at least give the book fans a consolation treat while still leaving enough loose ends to continue the story IF they do in fact get good news. And since I trust Leigh Bardugo to write a good story because she can, I’m giving them the benefit of the doubt and willing to believe the second case is true, because that at least makes SOME sense. If the show gets cancelled and Six of Crows never comes to life, I can live with that.

All in all, it was a hell of a ride and I enjoyed myself. It’s not what I wanted, but I had fun and that’s all that matters in the end. I give Shadow & Bone season 2 a solid 7/10. Yup.

these are my incoherent thoughts just about the first episode and i didn’t even include all the screaming

nikolai being introduced IN THE SAME ROOM AS KAZ BREKKER?? this is a fucking dream come true

all the doubts about paddy playing nikolai faded as soon as he smirked like that. that’s sturmhond

JESPER’S SECRET?? i don’t even know how to react. kaz seeing everything as usual, noticing all the details, and jes never telling him before. i couldn’t wait for this moment

i’m like ten minutes into the episode and kaz is in a wagon full of prisoners having a panic attack, feeling skin around him and remembering jordie. i can’t do this. i can’t cope with this pain

🏅 What is something you recently felt proud of in regard to your writing (finished a fic, actually planned for once, etc).

I actually finished Keep You Safe! 🥹 I am so proud of that story! But, I’m also so proud of all of the stories I’ve written/started for Six of Crows. I still feel so compelled by my WIPs, and so motivated to write, even with the Focus Issues™️ I’ve been having. I’m really feeling good about my stories more frequently than I’m feeling self conscious, and that’s rare.

🌙 What time of day do you prefer to write? Why?

I used to be a morning writer— I just felt like my mind was clearest in the early hours. But now, I’m a mid morning to evening, equal opportunity writer, and I’m most likely to edit in the early morning.

🧠 What’s an idea you have that you can’t quite call a WIP yet?

I have ANOTHER “Colm discovers Jesper’s Ketterdam Life” fic in my brain, and it’s not outlined or written in any capacity, but it makes me INSANE.

So, let’s set the scene— this is a show verse story in which the ice court heist straight up doesn’t happen. Inej comes to visit fairly regularly. Nikolai’s pardon successfully got Matthias out of Hellgate and they are working their shit out. Wylan’s past came out shortly after they returned from Ravka when his father started sending letters to the Slat, and they became more genuinely threatening. Any animosity about his hiding his past has faded in the face of his life being threatened, and Jesper is just trying to keep him safe. They are so deeply in love.

The story starts about three months since Ravka and the Fold, and the crows are on high alert— recently, Jan sent someone to try to kill Wylan. It was a botched attempt, but Kaz is taking no chances. Wylan hates it, but he’s escorted by someone (usually jesper, because he would come hang out with him anyway) to and from his workshop. Kaz is taking this very seriously, and plotting the downfall of Jan Van Eck with each passing second. But in the meantime, they have to keep Wylan alive.

One morning, Rotty doesn’t meet him outside the workshop like they agreed. And Wylan is a little nervous, but decides to walk back to the slat alone.

Meanwhile, simultaneously, a man is wandering in from fifth harbour, trying his best to conduct his own search for his estranged son after the staadwatch proved useless. He’s starting to feel a bit hopeless, when he hears gunshots. He doesn’t even have time to wonder, because a young man is stumbling, running headlong into him, and when he grips the boy to help him stand, his hands come away bloody.

Colm is desperate to find Jesper, but he looks at this boy and he feels so terrible— he can’t be any older than Jes. He has to make sure he gets the help he needs, that he’ll be okay. But, when he tries to take him to the hospital, the boy insists that he take him to “the crow club— it’s closer. He, he might send someone to the hospital.”

So, colm takes this gravely wounded young man to the crow club. And finds more than he bargained for.

One day soon, maybe I’ll write this one out— it’s so fun, and juicy. I have so many ideas for it, as like, a slower, more angry and resentful “Colm and the Crows” story. One that really examines his dynamics with each of them. 👁️👁️
