I switched because you literally said your problem was his arrogance. What, would you like me to ignore that and keep focusing on the word spite? It was what I was originally talking about, with most people either claiming one or the other or usually both at the same time, and then you clarified your position on the matter. So I switched. If you couldn't possibly bother to look up anything on Raymond's channel that's your own damn fault, like it would be my own damn fault if I saw... idk, one video of Unresolved Textual Tension's videos and complained about Maria's flippant recapping of the book she's reviewing. If I didn't watch any time they review a book she likes and she still reviews the book the exact same way meaning she isn't flippant out of hate, me bitching about how salty she is would mean I have egg on my face. There's plenty of examples in his reactions where he praises the show's writing that tell me you didn't even bother.

You don't get to make stuff up about how you perceive someone to be when you don't bother to do anything except watch (maybe, or maybe you don't, I don't know you, nor have I looked you up. I am just responding to you as you are right now) his Fixing videos and then claim he's arrogant because he said on his twitter one time that he thinks he's better than M&K.

And really, who cares? Having a writing job on a show doesn't inherently make you a good writer. It means that their works are public and up for critique, which anyone is free to do. Writers on other shows are called bad all the time. Stephen Moffat was called a bad writer all the time who should have stayed an episodic writer. Raymond has said that he doesn't think they're BAD writers, either. Just that, like Moffat, their strengths are with shorter, more contained stories. You'd know that if you watched his content, because he's said it multiple times. Point is, Raymond backs up his words with action while most people don't. Most people just sit and complain and say 'bad writer' and then move on with their lives. Raymond is a writer and is doing FRWBY and his own content outside of Fixing RWBY.

Anyway, I do believe I didn't fully take a look at what you were saying and respond to it, you're right, so I'll correct that.

Prove it. And not by saying "this thing sucks". Actually explain in detail why certain things you take issue with are a problem and taking into account the changes Fixing RWBY has made into context. It should be easy for you to do, since you claim he didn't do a single thing better. Not a single aspect is done well. Nothing at all. So you should have plenty of material to choose one thing.

Keep in mind that I may actually agree with you on something. I don't think Fixing is perfect, but just because I don't think that something is the way that I would have done it means that it's bad necessarily. You have to look at more than one aspect before you determine the difference between it not being for you and it being actively bad. Stepping away from your personal preferences to look at something objectively, I can understand the decisions made.

Mupa and I talked about how it would have been easy to make Ren or Jaune Ozpin's host. Ren has the green theme, same as Ozpin. He can also pull off the wiser-than-he-seems aspect. Jaune is meant to be Joan of Arc. Hearing voices in his head is RIGHT THERE. Missed opportunity, if you ask me lol

Though I've said it before, I actually chewed Raymond out in vc once for replacing Oscar because I was looking forward to seeing his interpretation of Oscar. I also pointed out that the point of Fixing is to stick to canon as close as possible.

Thing about spiteful passion is that you quickly get burned out by it. It wears you down if you keep it up for long periods of time. Raymond has been working on Fixing RWBY for YEARS. Because he loves the show. He's said he loves the show multiple times on his channel. Doing a big project on something you love also wears you down, but you are rejuvenated in the end by the end product. Things made out of spite are only effective in the short term, not the long.

You're making a lot of assumptions here, bud.

That a fan, who has less power than the creators, cannot or should not have the ability to insult the writing. He doesn't insult the writers, at least as far as I remember. He doesn't say 'fuck Miles/Kerry the piece of shit' or anything like that, he says he's a bad writer. Oh. How terrible. He's made jokes before about burning idols of Miles in his backyard, sure, but that's not an insult. It's comedy. You don't have to find it funny, but it's not meant to be taken seriously, it's not a threat; the guy jokes around a lot.

That as a fan he should be held up to the same standards as the professional writers, who are held to a professional standard and judged accordingly. Keep in mind: a lot of fanfic authors out there do believe themselves better than the writers of the fandom they write for. Or unrelated professional authors. There's a reason 'I've read/written better fanfic than this' is a common insult.

He does less and risks less of himself than the original creators. What does this even mean? How do you know how much work Raymond does or does not do to make Fixing RWBY? Creating a base world like RWBY is easy. It can be done in mere hours. Or any story meant for younger audiences, not to talk about RWBY specifically. Sailor Moon is a very simplistic story whose premise and characters can be created in a few hours. Spice and Wolf is a premise that is very simplistic world building. And I've seen plenty of authors who have put blood, sweat and tears into writing fanfic, or rewriting something. Making sure the lore is correct, or references something, the characters are fundamentally the same, expanding on things, adding things that don't contradict, and if you are changing aspects of the canon lore, making sure it still is within the boundaries of what the canon is. My own fanfic is an example I've put a lot of thought and effort into with it being an AU pseudo-rewrite based on my gripes with my own main fandom, so I have to constantly cross-reference to make sure I get characterization right despite the alternate scenario and build up new character arcs from scratch despite a lot of the work already being done for me. To say that because he's building off something already established so he doesn't work hard is an insult to all fanfic writers.

This is just reiterating the point you've already tried to make. He's a fan who is not making money selling Fixing RWBY. Thinking that you should criticize a fan making a fan project is a dick move in any fandom that I know of. It's a nonsense question and just makes you look more like a bully. It's a power dynamics thing. Raymond has no real power over RWBY. He's "punching up" as they say. Anyone claiming that they should have the right to criticize a fan and say things about them because "they're doing it too" is being petty and acting like a child.

For the record: didn't Miles literally say he hates people who criticize just to be spiteful or to be mean? He called out people who do that because it's inappropriate. So why do you feel it's okay to do it when the person you're supposedly defending doesn't condone your behaviour?

Raymond loves criticism, actually. He looks forward to any time someone can give him honest critique of the show. He actively says at the end of his Fixing videos to leave comments and criticisms in the comments section. He addresses them. He's acknowledged mistakes that he's made, and strives to do better.

Not all criticism is written equal, though. Saying 'I think this thing is weak/poorly executed because of xyz reasons' is different from 'ew you did zyx how dare' or 'how dare you change [literally anything] you're a hack writer'.

One is a genuine critique talking in detail about the flaws and why they view it as a problem. The middle is saying they don't like a concept. Okay? Noted, I guess. The other is straight up being a troll or a petulant child.

Raymond takes into consideration the first, sometimes the second and laughs at the third. But he's also allowed to defend himself.

If you haven't seen when he says directly that he loves the show, that's on you.

Also you claim to know how much his book has been seen now? How many people bought his book? Since you know so much, please tell me, I'm curious. His video views on his announcement aren't indicative of that, I hope you know. The Artificer has been reviewed by at least one other youtuber, a booktuber, so it's out there. It might get picked up by more. Not everyone who casually reads books leaves reviews, either. I know I'm one of those people, because I have nothing substantial to say, or I just don't feel like it even if I do.

I ask why the hell do you care about his other works and whether they're popular. But if we're comparing here, you have a company of at least 300 people by the time of volume 2 compared to a single man. And you think a company with a budget of any kind, no matter how small it may be for marketing and merchandise is really comparable to one man? Like frig. Bigger youtubers than him don't even compare to Company money. Shadiversity for instance, for all his popularity, doesn't compare to Company money.

The Morality of Fandom Activities

This might as well be an essay, so apologies for my long asf post. Just a few heads up: this is in no way talking about people who support incest irl and MAPS. Those are extreme cases that I'm not qualified myself to talk about, I only know that I don't want them on my page 😭

I stopped having a very active social media presence when I was finishing high school. For me, this was a huge deal, because as the token weird queer kid all my life, Tumblr and fandom culture provided a safe space for self-expression, developing my writing skills and exploring myself. Fandoms usually play a huge role for teens, since their interactions and their experiences shape their mindsets into the primary form their adult brain takes. Whenever I look at my old posts, I can see the points where I was maturing, I could see my opinions change very clearly without always connecting old posts to significant life events.

What is very important to take into account is that I was in ALL the "red flag" fandoms, even some niche ones. BNHA, Homestuck, RWBY, Okegom, Voltron, you name it. I was into it, I had Instagram edits of it saved on my phone. As a result, I am familiar with all kinds of fujoshi, yuri bros, proshippers, etc. I'm not here to inform you about my entire digital footprint though. I'm here to discuss fandom morality. Fair warning, I will be referring to a bunch of dark themes vaguely.

I want to start by saying I understand the appeal of a toxic ship. A ship that is straight-up problematic given the context of the story. Be it because the characters are abusive to each other, a very big age gap or them being blood relatives - I get it, even if I'm one of the people who's easily repelled by this shit. I get why Junjou Romantica, for example, became so popular. The big body proportions, the "forbidden romance" trope, the guilty pleasure, I get it. I understand how nerdy young women would fawn over yaoi because they craved a soft male touch. I understand the south park proshippers because they inserted their younger selves into the characters and imagined scenarios where their own fucked-up childhoods would make sense.

My experience with Funamusea helped me understand that things that are taboo can be appealing in a fictional form. There were a lot of issues because the horror used in Funa's games was centered around sexual battery and assault. To me, that made perfect sense. Funa games are packed to the brim with gore, war, mental abuse, and disturbing characters. Of course, there would be SA in such a fucked up setting. Rape is a horrifying thing that no one should face because it is a subcategory of violence. VIOLENCE IS SOMETHING NO ONE SHOULD EVER COME ACROSS. Therefore, why is it that people who write stories containing this trope receive so much hate, but 1940s war aus for example get praised? Why is FMA a pacifist masterpiece and not torture porn?

For "glorifying" real-life horrors? Triggering people? Let's broaden this.

Think of your favorite slasher film. Your favorite best-seller horror book. Do you think that the people behind these stories are freaks and murderers? Psychopaths are capable of fitting in anywhere they want, even fucking churches. So it is useless to assume creators are moral instigators for their VILLAINS. Now let's think about Colleen Hoover and Sara J Maas (or as I like to call her, Sara J Ass). Their "love" stories are super popular because of the immense marketing that they have received, despite profiting off romanticized harmful content. Backlash is still minimized in contrast to anime niche, because they are backed by million-dollar industries and the fact that they conform to the norms of a straight story. Although that, is a topic for another discussion - how problematic characteristics are "musts" in irl relationships.

Lastly, I want to talk about the so-called community saviors who want to protect these platforms. Those who want to build a safe environment so that no predators infiltrate our sacred grounds where we discuss Persona 5 ABO dynamics. A lot of them are oftentimes victims of this sort of abuse. I myself have come across groomers. But tbh 15yo kids who reblog Shiro X Keith are not really the enemy? Anyway, that's a little besides the point. I want to directly talk to these people right now, hear me out: you are hypocrites. You only pretend to care about Tumblr communities but do not hesitate to accuse someone of abuse (any kind) and tell them to end their life. How are you protecting anyone like this? How are you a positive role model for the children partaking in fandom activities when you show clearly that you wish death upon someone. VIOLENCE IS SOMETHING NO ONE SHOULD EVER COME ACROSS, I re-iterate and you possibly agree, but YOU ARE STILL VIOLENT, and justify it by being "virtuous". How are you any different from @\hivliving? Her actions will forever be engraved in her victims' heads, even if she was humiliated in the end. Then again, it would have been better for her to write a shitty low-quality fic about Hamilton having HIV or whatever the fuck, if looking up basic things about HIV was so difficult. After 7 years in & out of fandoms, there's one thing I'm fine with, and that's bad fics.

Ultimately there is so much more I want to say. I might cover this topic on my bestie and I's podcast sometime (soz it's in Greek). The bottom line here though is not about keeping a neutral stance on problematic media. It is to enjoy whatever the fuck you want just because it makes you happy. It is to differentiate what's a wolf in sheep's clothing from what's a sheep. It is to accept that kids will ALWAYS lie about their age to access all sorts of NSFW. God knows I did so. It is to recognize them and realize that their creators and fans are most likely not going to act out every bad thing that occurs in said story. Because if that were the case, with the rise of all the Yeagerists, we'd have so many bitchless college students trying to start little rumblings of their own, and the world would be a much funnier place.

Today’s episode hit me hard. The themes of Ruby’s depression, Neo’s cruelty and mockery of her, the reveal of the Cat’s evil nature, and Ruby’s decision to let herself be Ascended. It hit too hard. As someone who strongly deals with mental health issues, I watched the episode once and swore to never watch it again. Not even next week, not even the week after that, not even if I was binging through all of RWBY. I am never watching this episode again. This isn’t because it’s a bad episode. In fact I would argue it was the best RWBY episode ever. It’s the harshness, cruelty, and heavy subject matter that left me unable to even watch clips of the episode.

Of course this episode did start with a minor warning, one I brushed off as previous episodes had similar ones so I thought nothing of it as the previous episodes weren’t that bad to me at least. Here’s the thing, Crunchyroll is the one to blame for the warning being numbed down or even removed as I’ve heard stories of. This wasn’t RT’s fault. Thought I should mention this but back to the main part of this post.

I was sitting in the back seat of a car with my family when I watched it, and I had to put on sunglasses to hide the fact I was crying. This episode moved me to tears, something only once previously done by my first time watching the Pyrrha statue in Argus scene from V6. Here’s the thing though, that was a tearing up. This episode would have had me crawling up into a ball and sobbing while having a full blown panic attack if I wasn’t in the presence of my family.

Watching Yang be unable to stop Ruby from drinking the tea that ascended her, Ruby being unable to stop Little from being stomped on by Neo, Neo making Ruby think her friends and the ones she lost hated her, and the context of the previous episodes struck a nerve in me.

It triggered memories of waving to a friend while walking to class, and a week later getting a phone call from someone else that the friend had died. I won’t give further details, especially not on how they died, but it is certain they took their own life.

A year prior to that, another friend passed away to an accidental overdose.

I was barely 18 and barely 19 and I had to witness the passing of two of my classmates. People I talked to in class or smiled at in the hall or hung out with at football games. Gone.

Barely into my first semester at college, and I had attended the funerals of two of my friends.

All of those memories, the feeling of hopelessness and powerlessness to stop any of it, to be forced to pick myself up and keep moving forward while I wasn’t fully done grieving, all of the times I struggled with depression and thoughts of not wanting to be alive again, all of it hit me watching Ruby sip down that tea.

My emotions in that moment were nothing short of grief, all of it at once. I was angry and sad and feeling so lost and unable to describe what I was feeling other than having my mind screaming in pain.

Now this is the part of this post that the anger and negativity starts.

I went onto a certain Discord server I’m in, I’m not gonna name it just know it’s RWBY related, and I decided to voice my opinions on the episode and even vent a little to see if anyone else was going through the same thing and hopefully to start up people caring for each other and try to lift each others’ moods after this devastating and disturbing episode.

Here’s what I got instead.

One person told me to get over myself and that I was dumb for not seeing this coming. That I shouldn’t be complaining and that I shouldn’t be watching RWBY. I tried to call them out on their toxicity and they responded by playing victim and claiming I sent them a death threat.

Another person continued to repost the same unfunny meme of when Little was stomped on by Neo. I once more tried to call them out and ask for them to stop. They replied by throwing a fit and asking why I was being so soft for a cartoon.

And lastly two people kept posting unfunny memes of Ruby drinking the tea. Same pattern followed. I called them out and asked them to stop. They doubled down and played victim, calling me morally bankrupt and a cry baby.

All of these people I have now blocked and reported to the mods for their behavior.

What frustrates me is how each and every time I was described as over reacting, weak, and mocking me and my concerns. I even explained why these scenes were hitting me so hard and they still refused to listen.

I hate this fandom so much. Time and time again without fail, just like RT, it always gets worse. Sexism, racism, homophobia, and now a mockery of mental health.

I want to watch RWBY, I want to engage with the fandom, I want to enjoy my time here.

The fact that is becoming increasingly difficult for me now a days is sad, disheartening, and frustrating.

So please, if you read all the way through this. Make sure you let those you care about know that they’re loved and you’re there if they need anything. Care for one another and show empathy.

I can't say I'm a fan of any super underrated RWBY characters, so I'll go with Robyn Hill because certain segments of this fanbase absolutely hate her and I don't see her talked about much these days.

Robyn Hill is courageous, compassionate, smarter than most people give her credit for, absurdly hot, and has great people skills and a voice I could listen to all day. She's also the proud owner of a personal Combat Twink as of the end of Volume 7, so she's got that going for her.

She's also been putting up with Ironwood's shit for way longer than any human being should have to and deserves credit for that

Yang's intelligence. No one outside of Tumblr wants to admit she has a brain. Even the people who do acknowledge her intelligence don't want to admit that based on what we've actually seen so far on the screen (not what the narrative has tried to tell us), Yang is actually the smartest member of her team.

Every time I see a post tagged with "anti-rwde" or any variant of "greenlight Volume 10" I have to fight the overwhelming urge to smash the block button. The first is an obnoxious circlejerk full of people who get high off their own outrage and the second is a blatant declaration that whoever's posting it doesn't care who Rooster Teeth has hurt in the past and will continue to hurt if given the chance as long as they get more of a mid-tier cartoon.

"Yang is a bad sister"

"Team RWBY was wrong to defy Cordovin's authority" (the show fucked up by failing to adequately establish the necessity of doing so, as I talked about in another post, but this is literally just a standard YA plot beat that the writers just dropped the ball on regarding execution)

"Adam got nerfed/was wasted potential/whatever" (I'm far more willing to entertain discussions of potential racism in his depiction)

"Team RWBY shouldn't've lied to Ironwood"

"Robyn Hill is dumb and angry" - she's been dealing with Ironwood's bullshit for ages now and had reason to believe that he'd specifically screwed her over

"Team RWBY constantly demand authority" - They follow authority figures until those authority figures fail, which they do with remarkable consistency. Almost like this is a story about the new generation surpassing the old and not repeating their mistakes. Whether that's actually executed well is... another story.

"Qrow was dumb for teaming up with Tyrian" - it was his best play and none of his options were actually good. The actual dumbass was Clover.

"Yang is impulsive and reckless and lost her arm at Beacon because of it" - No. She had no better choice than the one she made and it wasn't her fault she ended up in that situation.

I guess some of these are bad takes more so than complaints, but I hate them regardless

Guiding Ahead wasn't terrible as a self-contained story, but it was too self-contained: it only felt like it was even taking place on Terra because Mostima was there. Nothing about it felt connected to the rest of the narrative and it killed my desire to learn more about Laterano.

RT and RWBY itself are no strangers to political content and discussions surrounding it. The series started with a stand-in for minorities in the form of Faunus. It started with a racial discrimination subplot. A subplot that was heavily mishandled and eventually, for the most part, abandoned after Volume 5. The writers themselves admited that they were ignorant on the subject. And yet... And yet they cannot seem to keep away from once again diving into political topics, again and again.

Oh for god's sake.

The Fanaus are not political. In order for something to be political, it would have to be talking recent events rather than universal issues. Bigotry is nothing new.

Also, know how people bitch about the Fanaus plotline because the WF was portrayed as bad even though civil rights groups can be bad because they're still made up of people and were still in-fact BETTER than their human counterparts? Those details that break any accusation of racism because it still treats the Fanaus better than the humans? Well-

During the story of RWBY: Arowfell our protagonists discover orbs that seem to attract Grimm to them. Eventually they find out that the person behind those orbs is no other than Hanlon Firestone, an ex-soldier of Atlas who became a very known and popular Union leader in Mantle, at least in the Arowfell universe.

It is discovered that he has a semblance with which he can extract raw fear out of people, which is then used to power special orbs that can contain fear. The protagonists then find him in Mantle, extracting fear from a young faunus woman by threathening to take out her eyes.

After some combat sequences he yelds, makes a short speech about how "This is not what i wanted" and reveals about his past efforts in trying to keep peace between Atlas and Mantle, and is then taken away by Atlas soldiers. While being taken away he also stated that "Whatever happens next is entirely your fault" while activating a Remote.

It is quickly found that this remote activated 4 separate Grimm attracting Orbs. Their activation not only results in increased Grimm activity but also results in the destruction of at least one village.

Hnalon isn't the main bad guy of RWBY Arrowfell.

That's Bram Thronmane. An ATLAS elite. Who caused this mass destruction as a means of petty revenge.

So not only is the union leader not the main bad guy, undercutting the whole 'unions are EVIL!' narrative he's pushing due to how fast he's swept away, but he's actually more MORAL than Bram. At the very least, he wanted to try and make things better. Bram was just being petty.

Sound familiar?

But hey, it's not like Dextixer is politically biased or anything that would cause him to treat this as a personal attack or anything. I'm sure this is an honest mistak-

You, a socialist. You, someone who preaches an ideology that nominally supports union leaders is preaching about how the poor union leader is bad while the elite is portrayed as bad or worse.

You know, I was operating under the idea that you made a rash decision and made a post before having all the facts. Bad but not the worst. But now, I have to question if you're being willfully ignorant to push your own politics. Just like the people who bitch about the WF.

Union leaders and workers have been long villainized in Media of all stripes, especially American media. They are often portrayed in three main ways, obsolete remnants of the past, corrupt thieves or completely unrealistic and uneeded.

In the case of Unrealistic and uneeded - It involves glorification of bosses and managers, or the glorification of the "bootstrap" mentality, of workers managing to rise up on their own merit.

The same is with their portrayal of being remnants of the past, although that usually takes a bit more positive spin on the past. It tells the viewer that "Bosses were bad in the past, and unions were good" and then proceeds to sell the myth that "Everything is fine now".

The portrayal of unions as being corrupt organizations full of thevies is a long standing one at this point. Often union leaders are either shown like "mob bosses" or are shown to pretend to be nice to the public while stealing money under the table.

Animation, Gaming and Movie industries have LONG been resistant to Unions despite the many reports of underpayment, workplace abuses and a long list of other issues.

You know, this might have...meant something if not for:

A. You providing no examples while all my time as a natural born AMERICAN lead to me growing up thinking unions were good.

B. You admitting to being a Socialist. You have ideological reason to misconstrue things. We can even tell by that little "It tells the viewer that "Bosses were bad in the past, and unions were good" and then proceeds to sell the myth that "Everything is fine now"" comment.

This isn't a villainization- It's actually a praising of unions as they improved conditions. It's only a villainization to you because your ideology says 'anything that gets in the way of smashing capitalism is evil!'

I do not think i need to rehash the RT drama of what happened nearly a month ago at this point. The stories of RT treatment of its workers are well known at this point. Sexual abuses, underpayment, overworking, these are well known and recorded. I have heard some talks of unionizing, but that has not manifested into anything just yet.

And yet here we are. Here we are with an Union leader who seems to be treated as a hero in Mantle. And he is evil. EVERYTHING about his portrayal screams, pure unadalturated evil, there are many intentional decisions taken to portray him like that.

So, if he really is pure evil, he surely can't be better than Bram then, right?

A) The first scene we see him in he is threathening and draining the fear of a young faunus girl. While doing so he looks smug, smiling, enjoying himself. After finishing the drain he just throws her away, like a rag to be discarded.

Counter: Bram using Olive and Team BRIR as pawns and lying to them for his petty revenge.

B) If that was not enough, i have to point out the very uncomfortable implications of him being portrayed as a large burly person of colour in a position of power and hurting a woman. There is a reason why he is not shown to be manhandling a man.

Counter: Did I mention Olive is black and a member of Team BRIR is as well? Also, this might have to do with the fact that people don't care if a dude would get hurt.

C) We are also heavily hinted at the fact that he hunts down specifically Faunus. An encounter with a faunus girl before his encounter reveals that faunus have been dissapearing in Mantle. Hanlon is a human, an union boss of the majority race is shown to secretly be abusing minorities.

Counter: Bram doesn't even have that. His actions would have destabilized all of Atlas all because James didn't hire him to his dream position.

D) During his fight his voice acting is specifically geared to be a villains. When he makes some of his attacks he laughs in a stereotypically villainy way. During the non-voiced talks between him and team RWBY he GROWLS and he starts his fight by saying "Let me show you what real fear is".

Counter: Bram too, just a pettier, more pathetic version.

E) After the fight is over and he is beaten. Instead of being humbled and surrendering peacefully, he activates 4 extra Grimm attracting Orbs to cause more destruction and puts the blame on team RWBY

Counter: Bram tried to have BRIR KILL them.

Let us be very clear. The ENTIRETY of the game when you meet him, makes him out to be a villain.

I think i have to be fair to mention that after he is beaten, he says that "This is not what i wanted" "I had no choice", but these two lines COMPLETELY do not match the rest of his character in any way shape or form. These phrases seem especially hollow since it is after saying those phrases that he activates the 4 grimm attracting orbs to cause even more destruction.

Really now? Cutting some context there.

Here's what he said in full- (6:48)

Sound familar? It's the basic essence of socialism. No wonder he takes it so personally huh?

Did I also forget to mention that you fight an Atlesian big shot's giant mech, before which he blusters but then runs away like a pathetic bitch?

Yeah, the whole narrative is just collapsing at this point.

Hanlon shows no positive traits, no signs of being forced, no signs of him not wanting to do what he was doing. As i pointed out above, all signs point into him ENJOYING his actions and he is portrayed as a villain.

He was once a hero and was trying to make things better. More than can be said for Bram, who's just a hairy Jacques.

Him being a person of colour in a show that seems to have next to no protagonists that are people of colour and instead seemingly relegades characters of darker skin tones to villain/antagonist roles is just a cherry on top.

The main bad guy is WHITE.

There is also no excuse that can be made for "He was forced" argument because team RWBY after that fight soon gets betrayed by someone they thought to be an ally. Olive Harper.

Olive Harper betrays team RWBY and tries to get them killed after the 4 orbs get dealt with. When team RWBY finally reach Olive. There is no fight. They reach Olive while she is crying, not only is she crying but she also gives an entire story of how she was foolled into betrayal by believing that the main villain of the game would make live better for those who live in Mantle/Atlas.

Not only does she do that but after team RWBY talks to her, she gives them 4 skill points to make them better in battle and to stop the main villain.

Does anyone else note the difference between how Olive Harper, a traitor that tried to kill team RWBY is portrayed in her redemption. And the difference in how Hanlon is portrayed? There is not even a comparison to be made here...

Notice how A. He doesn't mention what Olive's skin color is (since that would kill his race baiting bullshit) and B. He doesn't mention what the main villain's name is (which would destroy his narrative).

You don't 'accidentally' do this. He's withholding facts to manipulate people's view.

As with any arguments made, i can already foresee some of the excuses already being made as to why RT is not at fault for how Hanlon is writen about how they are still an "Amazing progressive company".

As for the arguments of 'You're a fucking socialist, you have every reason to lie to play the victim' and 'You completely ignore the final boss, who is basically Hanlon but worse, an elite and white'?

Nothing? Funny that.

D) And please, let us there be no excuses of "Well, RT didnt know, it was Way-Forward fault", this excuse has already been used way too much. When Blake slapped Sun it was the fault of animators, when people perceived Clover and Qrow being somewhat flirty it was animators, and in the case of Ice-Queendom all blame was laid before the feet of Shaft. RT intended for this portrayal.

The animators admitted it. BOTH times.

And Shaft outright SAID they wrote the story.

But nice little fallacy there.

I dont think i can say anything more on this topic than what i have already stated. RWBY has always been bad with covering political issues, and i had hoped that they learned their lessons, but that does not seem to be the case.

You know, every single time I have seen someone say this, I have replaced it with 'Either preach my ideology or I will do everything I can to misrepresent you.'

um on a more serious note i think a lot of rwby fans could rly benefit from ignoring the hatedom because Frankly there is nothing exceptional or uniquely vitriolic about rwby’s hatedom that is just What Hatedoms Are Like and the general posture of the online rwby fandom circles that i’ve been kind of perusing by cruising through tags and keeping an eye on what people say on my posts strikes me as almost—like i get the feeling sometimes that some folks who really do like the show have also nonetheless bought into the hatedom narrative of, oh rwby is an amateur mess written by people who don’t know what they’re doing really, and that leads to this bizarre sort of attitude that anything good must have been accidental?

bc the thing is while yes the amateur passion project of it all does show in the writing, mainly in the awkward pacing and clumsy worldbuilding in the first couple volumes, but this is a story that has excelled at set up and execution since its inception and, idk maybe blitzing through the first eight volumes has just given me a fundamentally different perspective on how the narrative is put together but it is ludicrous to me to see so many fans of this show engaging with it like they think the writing team is just kind of making it up as they go along—as if the story didn’t introduce salem by using her as a narrator three whole volumes before we even got a glimpse at her, as if the first three volumes aren’t deliberately structured to offer oblique glimpses of the conspiracy that reveals itself fully beginning in the fourth, as if v2-3 weren’t screaming the fall of atlas from the rooftops. how do you watch eight volumes of this and come away thinking that rwby is not a story that was meticulously and lovingly planned?

hdhdjvk i’m just a little frustrated that when my posts break containment there are inevitably a large handful of people who reblog them with tag commentary to the tune of “well i don’t believe this was purposeful and don’t trust the writers to do it but it would be so cool if this were right” like. god. maybe if you stopped drinking the hatedom koolaid and paid attention to what’s happening on screen you would feel more optimistic about the competency of the writing???

So, uh... here’s an interesting trend I’ve noticed over Volumes 6, 7 and 8:

Volume 6: Ruby uses a big heroic speech to bait Cordovin into taking a shot at here, thus revealing her cannon’s weak-spot for Ruby to take out.

Volume 7: Ruby needles Harriet’s competitive streak in order to bait her into chasing her around for the entire RWBY vs. Ace-Ops fight, thereby keeping Harriet distracted and unable to help her teammates.

One of my favorite things about Control is just how completely and utterly nuts/bonkers/GONE the FBC is as one of these ‘secret government blackops’ groups.

Like this is a trope we’re all fairly familiar with at this point; some secret government organization formed to monitor, contain and research all kinds of weird shit and keep it secret from the public. Also they may or may not have kinda gone totally rogue somewhere along the way and might now answer only to themselves at this point in a ‘who watches the watchers?’ commentary on the need for oversight.

But the more you find out about the Federal Bureau of Control, the more it becomes clear they just so utterly past ANY of that by the time the game begins. And have been for basically the last fifty some odd years.

Like here is a basic overview of the FBC that you learn within the first thirty or so minutes of the game: They are a secret government organization dedicated to the containment, cataloguing and research of supernatural artifacts and events. They are headquartered in what they call ‘The Oldest House’, a tall, imposing yet utterly nondescript building in the middle of New York City that is literally impossible for anyone to enter or even notice unless they already know about it. And the interior of the building is actually a twisting extradimensional labyrinth that also opens up to other dimensions/realities and might actually be the World Tree Yggdrasil. It also kind of hates any technology made in the last twenty years. And apparently Number 2 Pencils.

Oh, and the FBC doesn’t really report to the US Government. They report to a floating, inverted black pyramid that exists in a space outside of known reality that might also be the collective human subconscious. The pyramid is colloquially referred to as ‘The Board’ and they are an extradimensional entity/group of entities that appoints the Director of the FBC via the use of a physics-defying geometric gun called ‘The Service Weapon’ that is probably Excalibur/Mjolnir/every other legendary weapon in human myth. They also speak in word-salads and probably know they are in a video game.

See, back in 1964 when the FBC first discovered The Oldest House, they basically decided ‘WOW, this place is cool! Let’s make it our new headquarters!’ and promptly moved in. This was also when the current Director at the time found the Service Weapon within The Oldest House, made contact with/was chosen by The Board and from the point on the FBC really hasn’t answered to the US Government anymore.

Also, the Government basically doesn’t even know the Bureau even EXISTS anymore. Remember how The Oldest House has this kind of ‘Perception Filter’ that prevents almost anyone from entering it or even noticing it, which is how basically nobody can find it despite the fact that it is right in the middle of New York City? Well, after they moved in and became effective ‘residents’ of the house, this filter started applying to the FBC itself. They basically CAN’T be noticed or remembered at this point by anyone who isn’t part of the organization. The reason this secret organization can operate entirely off the grid and can’t be tracked is because they literally have freaky extradimensional reality-warping covering their tracks.

This is what I meant when I said that the FBC is just so far GONE. At this point, the FBC is itself a crazy, supernatural thing in and of itself.

Other fun details about the FBC include:

The Bureau facilities in The Oldest House are not powered by coal, oil or nuclear power. No, instead the lights are kept on by a former director who went a tad power-mad and lost control of his pyrokinesis, so the Bureau locked him up in a giant ‘Sarcophagus Containment’ unit and now use him as a power-generator.  He also sometimes talks through the waste-disposal furnace to try and get people to bring him human sacrifices.

The maintenance sector of the FBC includes an area called the ‘Black Rock Quarry’. The so called ‘black rock’ is an extra-dimensional mineral that, among other things, blocks and dampens supernatural effects and abilities. Needless to say, the Bureau mines the stuff extensively. Now, despite being within The Oldest House, the Black Rock Quarry is an open-top quarry. To space.

One of the ways Bureau personnel get around is via pull-strings that show up all over The Oldest House. Pull a string three times and you are transported to the Oceanview Motel, a quaint little motel that probably exists outside of known reality because no one has ever been able to actually go or see outside the motel. Once you’re there, you just ring the bell on the front desk three times, do some random task and procure a room key. The key opens a door, but only one with an inverted black pyramid. From there, you pull another string and are transported back to somewhere else in The Oldest House. So basically a rather convoluted teleportation system. There are also doors with other symbols that probably go to other realities, but the Bureau hasn’t figured out how to open them. Though one does seem to lead to a void of malevolent darkness that feeds off human creativity and is currently holding one Alan Wake.

Also, the bureau’s janitor is probably a Finnish Sea God.

One particularly interesting detail I haven’t seen many people talking about is the fact that Ironwood has a prosthetic left arm at the start of Volume 8.

I mean, think about the implications here. Ironwood’s arm was badly injured in his fight with Watts, but it’s not like he actually LOST the arm.

It seriously looks like that in the scant few hours between the end of Volume 7 and the start of Volume 8, Ironwood decided that he wasn’t going to wait for his arm to heal and simply amputated it and had it replaced with another prosthetic.

Ironwood didn’t lose his left arm due to battle or self-sacrifice. He lost it due to his own impatience.

Now in the moment of Volume 8, this is a pretty stark indicator of Ironwood’s villainous turn and how much he’s started dehumanizing those around him. He’s flat out dehumanizing himself.

But in the broader context of Ironwood’s character, I really have to wonder: Is this even the FIRST time Ironwood has done this? Replace part of his body with machinery not out of necessity but out of convenience?

The protagonists had no plan to save Mantle and caused the downfall of Atlas

WARNING - LONG POST

First things first, i am writing this after i finished rewatching Volume 8, and i will admit that i am quite angry. Rewatching Volume 8 again, if i may be very honest, made me hate the protagonists and their behaviour throughout the volume, and i will most likely make a thread on that, this is just a warning that some things said here might be very much coloured by my current emotions. Regardless, on with the thread.

Many times in the fandom i have seen team RWBY being praised for "having a plan" to save Mantle while "evil" Ironwood just wanted to sacrifice Mantle for no reason. Many times i have seen praise heaped upon team RWBY, and recently i began to question the narrative. Why exactly are the protagonists of the show to be lauded, when for almost the entire Atlas arc, they had absolutely no plan to save Atlas and only saved it due to a deus ex relic in the last 2 episodes?

And more importantly, i want to note how exactly our protagonists caused the downfall of Atlas.

"People will come"

Since the begining of Volume 8, our protagonists disagree on the next course of action with two separate sides forming. Yang and Ren believe that the people of Mantle should be prioritized and protected (Jaune joins them after trying to keep the peace between the group) while the group containing Blake, Ruby and Nora think that the Amity project is more important.

First of all, i want to note how hypocritically both parts of the fandom and the show treats this choice coming from Ruby. During the entirety of Volume 7 our protagonists are against Ironwood due to him prioritizing the Amity project over Mantle. Parts of the fandom outright call Ironwood a fascist and even genocidal due to this choice. And then in the first episode of Volume 8, Ruby makes the exactly same decision. She decides to prioritize the Amity project over people of Mantle who are in even more dire straits right now, even NORA joins her, the biggest opponent to Ironwood in V7 ideologically.

I want to note this specifically to point out one of the many reasons why people critical of the show look at the protagonists in a less than positive way, especially with how Ironwood is treated.

Regardless, the group splits up and each group now goes to enact its own plan. I will not rehash the details of what happens after, we all know. The group in Mantle helps evacuate people and eventually encounter the Hound while the Amity group manages to infiltrate Ironwoods military and with the help of Pietro, Maria and Penny send out the message about Salem.

And my question is.

Was this supposed to save Mantle? Ruby seems to believe that to be the case. She notes how people will come to help after finding out the truth about Salem. That is one of the reasons she enacts the Amity plan (Another reason is to warn people about Salem in general, for them to be prepared).

* But Nobody Came

People often forget that Ironwoods plan of Amity was designed and meant to be finished before Salem came close to Atlas. It was meant to warn people about Salem to get them all to fight her, it was not meant as a way to quickly call for reinforcements.

Can we think logically for a second? Who did Ruby expect to come in less than 2 days?

All of the other kingdoms are weeks if not months away from Atlas going on foot. None of them are as technologically advanced as Atlas.

Even without the question of logistics, who was going to come?

No other kingdom has a standing army that we know of, Mistral had its huntsmen butchered, Vacuo does not give a fuck about Atlas in any way shape or form, Menagerie is barely a kingdom if even that - were they going to send auraless militia with spears and shields like in V5? Vale is possibly the only kingdom that could even consider helping as the only lost an academy.

And before anyone says anything.

THIS was the plan of the protagonists to save Mantle/Atlas. When they get to the mansion Weiss even mentions that herself and asks Ruby about what they are going to do next, wait for someone else to come?

This plan was a literal death sentence. Nobody would come in time. And yet i am supposed to look at our protagonists and think them heroic in their opposition of Ironwood? When their plan would literally get EVERYONE killed?

One also has to note that we can understand the broadcast from our own out-of-universe perspective. But what are people going to think when they see a random girl talking about a Grimm queen, conspiracies of headmasters and Ironwood not to be trusted? Im sorry but i would think it was a prank call or a bad joke.

Of course, i have seen some people argue that if Ironwood agreed with Ruby and stayed to defend, it could have turned out well. Even if we are at our most optimistic, even if lets say Ironwood agrees with Ruby and just holds tight. Once again as mentioned before, who is going to come? And will they have enough numbers to take down the Grimm river and Salem with her whale? I think many people seem to imagine that people will just teleport to Atlas to help.

Atlas fell because of the protagonists

That alone is bad, until one considers that the protagonists preventing Ironwood from accessing the relic literally cause the downfall of Atlas. Salem did not invade Atlas instantly. It was protected by a shield. She waited....

All she had to do is wait....

And our "protagonists" gave her the time to do so.

Ironwoods plan was to indeed abandon Mantle to save Atlas. Because there was no time to wait, as proven when due to the inability for Atlas to rise (Due to lack of access to relic) results in the Grimm river reaching it and destroying the shield, which then allows Salems whale to land on Atlas.

The plot itself proves Ironwood right, as the Grimm river needed TIME to reach Atlas. If Ironwood was allowed to leave, Salem would not have breached Atlas and it would have been safe.

And what happens then? Do our protagonists go out and try to fix it all? No.

They drink tea in a fucking mansion, while May is talking about how they need to go help Mantle and people dying, our protagonists stand there with tea  cups in their fucking hands doing NOTHING!

And whats worse is that Ruby once again repeats about how she wants to "Save everyone" and yet it was her decisions and actions that resulted in Salem getting access to Atlas when before only Mantle was in true danger. But that goes conveniently ignored by everyone.

And whats worse is that then the plot gives her the victory despite her not doing ANYTHING to earn it.

Some people might argue that Ironwood is at fault because he stopped Mantle evacuations. I think its a false argument to make because evacuations would take time. Time which we have shown Atlas did not have due to the Grimm river. Even when Whitley offers the SDC drones to carry people up to Atlas, by that time its too late. Salem is already on Atlas. Its game over.

And of course, i cannot bring up the tea drinking without expecting push-back. Yes, I know that Nora is injured. But that does not mean that they need the entire team there, at best they need only one person to look over Nora, and when Klein comes back there is even less of an excuse to stay. Let us also note that for example HH allow their leader Robyn to stay in prison and prioritize the people over trying to save one of her own. Because that is what heroes do.

Some people switch this argument to the protagonists being "tired", and noone else is? Winter was injured and yet she is leading from the front. Happy Huntresses are giving all they got even when they have got nothing else to give, even civilians we see being saved give it their all. Being "tired" is no excuse when everyone else is active.

I also have to note that there is a tendency to headcanonize Ironwood as "running away forever" or that "There will be no resources up there", and both of these arguments against Ironwoods plan are very strange due to how much they depend on headcanon. There is nothing to indicate that Ironwood is not coming back forever.

Deus Ex Machina

Deus ex Machina - A plot device whereby a seemingly unsolvable problem in a story is suddenly and abruptly resolved by an unexpected and unlikely occurance. Its function is generally to resolve an impposible situation, surprise an audience, bring a happy ending or act as a comedic device.

I have very often refered to the staff of creation as a "Deus ex Machina" to our protagonists and how they save people. Many times people in the fandom admonished me for that, saying that the powers of the staff were set-up before or that its usage was not unexpected. usually i would bow out and not contest these claims.

After rewatching V8 i have realized my mistake.

For all intents and purposes, the staff of creation (In regards to creating portals) is a Deus Ex Machina in the story. While its existance overall is known, nothing else is. For all anyone knew its only use was to give infinite energy and nothing else.

Before and after the launching of Amity project in Volume 8, our protagonists do not know how the staff works and NEVER let it figure into their plans. As far as the protagonists are concerned the only importance of the staff was to not let it get into Salems hands or allow Ironwood to lift Atlas. That is it.

Till as far as episode 10, the protagonists have no plan to save anyone. All that we get from Ruby is that she "wants to save everyone", nothing else. No theories, no plans, no thoughts. No NOTHING.

The staff of creation allowing the protagonists to create portals to save people is the very definition of "Deus Ex Machina". It is a sudden resolution to an otherwise unsolvable problem of saving everyone and it is supposed to justify team RWBY and bring a "happy ending" to the volume. At least as "happy" as it can be.

It always annoys me how some parts of the fandom keep bringing up how Ruby uses the staff of creation as some kind of "own" that "Ironwood could have done the same", when NOONE properly knew how the staff worked beforehand until the plot demanded team RWBY to be rewarded for their "morality". The staff of creation being able to create such things did not even exist as a concept before that, for all that anyone knew the only thing it did was give infinite energy.

"You are a bandit, AND I AM THE GODDAMN HERO"

Many of you can probably recognize this quote. It is from no other than one of the best villains of all time, Handsome Jack. A delusional fool who believed that he was saving everyone, that he was a misunderstood hero while everyone who opposed him was a villain.

I bring this up because rewatching Volume 8, quite frankly, made me hate the protagonists due to how they acted.

Ruby does the same thing Ironwood does in V7, with little opposition and with the support of those who demonized Ironwood for his actions. While doing that she also talks back against Ironwood when he contacts Penny. While Jaune and his friends, Happy Huntresses and even the police and military of Mantle/Atlas are fighting the Grimm. Ruby and Weiss just sit in a fucking mansion drinking tea.

Winter starts the volume with massive injuries from her previous fight and yet she is there, at the front.

And the narrative always seems to justify them. Its the weirdest feeling. The entire of Volume 8, especially the fall of Atlas happens due to the protagonists literally holding Atlas hostage unless they risk it all and try to save Mantle. And in the end they are rewarded for it while Ironwood is villainized.

And its not just the narrative. Parts of the fandom are the same.

I have seen takes that what Ruby did was heroic. Her holding Atlas hostage, was a heroic action.

Rewatching Volume 8 i just felt horrified that THIS is our "pure-hearted" protagonist. She throws an Ultimatum to Ironwood. Either Mantle is saved, or EVERYONE dies together. Noone is allowed to leave alone.

A friend of mine gave this analogy. Ironwood pulls the lever to save 3 and kill one. Ruby switches the tracks back to kill 3 and save 1, demanding that the train stops.

I will probably make this into an entire thread but i just need to get this out there.

Our protagonists actions in V8 are not heroic. They are downright horrific actions, almost delusional actions. This is the first time i have watched a show where the hero in their wish to save everyone, are happy to throw everyone under the bus if it does not work. Even something as simple as criticism towards them is dismissed in-universe. Ren very rightfully brings up that they dont know what they are doing, and yet his concerns are dismissed because he is being rude.

Possible rewrite

I dont always do this but i want to take a shot at this. I will try to outline how i think this conflict could have been done better.

I think that team RWBY should have come up with the portal plan since the first episode. While the protagonists are licking their wounds and together, have them all talk about what can be done to save everyone. In the end have them come up with the staff plan, partially with the help of Ozpin, while Ozpin and Oscar are not exactly on speaking terms still have Ozpin tell Oscar about the staff and how it works EXACTLY or at least its possibilities.

This would result in two opposite sides. Our protagonists that have a risky but possible plan of saving everyone, and Ironwoods less risky plan of saving just Atlas. This makes the conflict less one-sided and in my opinion gives a lot more justification for team RWBY to act in the way they do.

Because now they would HAVE an actual plan, they actually have a leg to stand on. They are not just naively trying to save everyone with absolutely no idea of how to do it but can work towards a goal.

This plan can be paired with the Amity plan in phases 1-2. Thus both things could be achieved.

Our protagonists still split up, but this time on better terms with a genuine plan on their hands, with one side working on Amity and then preparing to try and get the relic while the other side saves people in Mantle in preparation for the portals.

Ironwood of course opposes all of this because he refuses to take the risk.

A lot of the conflict that is still in the show happens regardless. But in my opinion this would help team RWBY to be more justified in their actions than what they currently are.

Ending word

I know that this thread might be disagreeable for many. I do not write this thread "lightly" just to cause conflict or anything like that. These are my real feelings on the matter and i just wanted to write them down and share with others.

Do keep in mind that this is all my opinion and everyone can disagree, or have different opinions from me. Im just trying to share my own opinion, opinion that some people can either aggree to disagree.

I want to love our protagonists, i really do, but their actions and especially how little thought they put into their actions drive me up the wall and make me feel bad to consider them protagonists.

The Two Best Fanfics I’ve Ever Read

I’m bored and today is my birthday, so I figured I should post a lot so I get a lot of the seratonin that comes from messages from Tumblr. Anyways, if some of you guys are bored and want to read something, here’s the two best things I’ve ever read… neither of which are on any of my main fandoms (unless you count Pokemon, but I’m not THAT into it…):

Blackened Skies - A Danganronpa Fic by MrCynical and CSpratt (AO3)

Blackened Skies takes place after the events of the three main games, and sees all 16 of the series Blackened (give or take a few characters who aren’t technically Blackened but might as well be) mysteriously brought back to life on a gigantic cruise ship called the Despair of the Seas.

A ship that belongs to none other than their former captor, Monokuma. Naturally, what follows is a Killing Game: a Killing Game more heated and intense that the first three combined, with the line between friend and foe blurring more and more each day as new bonds are formed, old ones are tested, and secrets- wether ones hidden by the students or taken by Monokuma- are unveiled.

As tensions continue to mount and bodies begin to pile, our protagonist- who I won’t name for the sake of spoilers for Chapter 1 of V3- must find a way to reestablish harmony among their classmates, and escape the ship or die trying… for a second time.

This fic is… awesome. I mean, it feels so accurate that it’s basically just a fourth game. A fourth game that treats even the most hated Blackened as people and not just running gags, shines a spotlight on underdeveloped and unexplored characters, and overall actually might even be BETTER than its source material.

Naturally, it contains major spoilers for all three of the games- and the anime, too- and it gets knee-deep in spoiler territory QUICKLY, but it is worth it. It is so worth it. I can’t imagine how much of a ride this fic must be without the context of the three games, but it’d still be really good.

Boldores and Boomsticks - A Pokemon x RWBY Crossover AU by DarwinCandidate (Spacebattles)

Boldores and Boomsticks sees the ragtag team of Huntresses we’ve come to know and love, Team RWBY, and throws them into an another world: this one overrun by not Grimm, but equally strange creatures that are just as widespread and perhaps even more powerful, yet far more benevolent. Creatures called Pokemon.

However, the Grimm threat is still an issue to worry about in this world. They weren’t the only things to come through those portals, after all. Along with their new, powerful little animal buddies, they’ll have to face enemies new and old to protect their new friends on the other side, and find a way back home.

This one is just as cool as Blackened Skies. I actually didn’t know anything about RWBY before reading this, but from what I’ve seen since, it is VERY in-character, especially with the tone and humour (Tracey’s depiction of Gary’s crash and burn, for example, will never fail to make me smile.)

This little guy has inspired a whole bunch of hypothetical Pokemon Isekai AUs from me, one of which I actually kinda like but at the same time I’m like light years away from being able to write it because I’ll need to wait until the series is finished which could take like a year for all I know and also it’s a really small channel so I need to ask permission oh wait shit I’m rambling again forget I said that

ANYWAYS, go read it! It’s funny and weird and cool and Pokemon crossovers are so awesome and I’d love to read more of them!

So, let’s talk about James’s semblance, Mettle.

So I’m going to be talking about some of the problems I think there are with Ironwood’s semblance and it not being included in the show. I’m going to be very critical of and bashing RWBY, and there’s probably going to be CRWBY bashing too. If you don’t want to see any of that or if you’re against any sort of pro Ironwood content, don’t read this post or interact.

So let’s try to piece together from these statements what Ironwood’s semblance is.

It’s a passive semblance. As far as I know, the only other passive semblance we have to judge how those work is Qrow. Unlike active semblances, Qrow’s passive semblance can’t be controlled, and can only be increased at will, but always runs at frequencies severe enough that Qrow thinks of it as controlling his life and preventing him from being able to be close to his family. From the way Qrow’s semblance behaves, we can extrapolate that James’s semblance likely works in the same way, and in the panel, it’s described as ‘running in the background.’ I.E. He can’t turn it off, it runs through his entire life, he can only increase it in certain times.

It’s described as hyper-focusing, stubbornness, narrow-set focus, being unable to concentrate or care about things outside of his set goal, and pushing himself in doing what he’s decided he has to do.

There are several reasons I want to talk about this semblance.

1. This semblance might’ve been newly invented for season 7 and 8. Why do I think this? Eddy Rivas says ‘I believe we called it Mettle’ in the panel (emphasis is mine,) and is talking like he was included in inventing it, even though he became a co-writer for volume 7. Also they don’t mention if it affected Ironwood pre-volume 7, they only mention it being seen or considering including it in volume 7 and 8. Also, the voice actor of James Ironwood didn’t know about this semblance until a fan told him. It’s possible that this semblance was written earlier, but I doubt it and I think that this semblance was invented in the conception of volumes 7 and 8 with Eddy Rivas being involved. As such, I’m going to view everything pre-volume 7 as actions we were intended to consider James’s actual character, and everything post-volume 6 as actions influenced by his semblance.

2. The fact that it’s not included is lazy. This is a character defining semblance. This colors literally everything that Ironwood does in seasons seven and eight, this is a major game changer, this changes any understanding of the character. I’ve said this before, but fans shouldn’t have to do homework to understand the story. Many fans don’t want to go searching through panels, wikis, books, and zoom meetings to try and piece together why a character might be the way they are or how the magic systems work. The fact that the semblance isn’t included has led to confusion about how the semblance works. Some RWBY fans will present the way they decided the semblance works and get actively angry at fans who headcanon that it works differently or are upset with the way the creators themselves described the semblance. Other fans act like RWBY critics who think Ironwood’s fall to villainy is hard to track are stupid for not knowing this completely unincluded detail, and other fans villainize the semblance and use it as a reason why Ironwood is an inherently bad person. On the flip side, James Ironwood fans are rightly confused at this semblance that seems like it could be an explanation for the sudden shifts in his character. Some of them don’t understand why this semblance isn’t explained and at least treated as a part of his fall and treated more sympathetically. The fact that it wasn’t explained in the show leads to fans coming up with their own conclusions, and then arguing over what version is viable or what the collective fandom should accept.

3. The semblance itself is a lazy explanation for his villainy. The creators didn’t write a convincing hero-to-villain story. Ironwood’s leaps in morality are made with very little groundwork or explanation, he goes from ‘doing what he feels needs to be done’ to threatening to bomb the remaining citizens of Mantle in a completely irrational time with laughter and smiles over the course of a season that didn’t really put the focus on that progression. The semblance wasn’t explained or even mentioned and Ironwood wasn’t treated with sympathy or understanding, because we were meant to hate him and see him as the enemy to the protagonists, who we were meant to see as completely right. But the semblance is then an easy explanation that ‘fills out the plot holes’ if CRWBY is asked, that they can use to justify the fall to villainy - or use to suddenly redeem James if they decide they want to. And as I said before, this semblance is already being used by the mega-fans to explain the fall to villainy and throw it in the faces of any critics. Once again, it feels like the writers are just coming up with whatever they can to make up for their shitty writing, while they also rely on their fans to fill in the gaps and ‘explain’ to critics exactly how they think the semblance works and act like the critics or bashers should’ve just come to the same conclusion they did.

4. The semblance is problematic because of how villainized James is specifically for things like his semblance. The semblance is literally the best possible explanation for Ironwood’s fall and the only one I’ve heard that makes any sense. But his semblance is literally described by the creators as ‘hyper-focusing.’ The fact that his semblance is treated as something that makes him more of a villain and something that aids in his destructive behavior that isn’t ever treated with an ounce of sympathy or understanding, is a really bad look. There are real-life people who hyper-fixate on things and can’t help it, and while James’s semblance might not be hyper-fixating exactly, CRWBY still hurt people with the way they talked about this semblance and how they included it in Ironwood’s fall. I’m not diagnosed and I’m therefore never sure of this, but I think I’m ADHD and hyper-fixate on things (like RWBY, lol.) I’ve never been sure exactly how I view Ironwood’s semblance, but hearing the way that the CRWBY head writers talk about it made me feel like I should keep that side of me from people who don’t know me well like my co-workers. Whether or not it was intended, that’s what CRWBY did, and there are many more people than just me who were hurt or bothered by this personally.

5. Since I’m assuming this semblance was a new addition to James in season 7 and 8, it really honestly feels disconnected. It’s a passive semblance, it’s meant to affect James during the course of his whole life because he can’t turn it off. But in volumes 2 and 3, he seems honestly receptive to Oz, listens to him, never goes too far, never seems too stubborn, never seems to ignore other problems to focus on one thing more than what’s perfectly normal for regular people. Before literally near the tail end of volume 7, Ironwood acted like a regular person unaffected by a semblance at all, who just happens to be a determined person facing hard situations. It really feels like the semblance was invented to explain the jump to villainy, and then used to explain how he did things like sear the flesh off of his arm in the Watts fight to be like ‘look, this didn’t come out of nowhere! There it is in this scene!’ which is really lazy. And the disjointed feeling between Ironwood from his first appearance and Ironwood post-shooting Oscar still takes you out of the story and makes you go ‘wait, what’s going on here?’ You shouldn’t be able to see the hand of the author, but it was very clear to me that the writers just wanted villain!Ironwood and just did whatever the hell they wanted to get there whether or not it made sense or what they had to force or forget to do it.

6. This semblance... Really makes Qrow look like a jerk. It makes everyone look like a jerk, but it especially makes Qrow look like a jerk. There’s a very, very strong probability that Qrow never had any idea about this semblance that Ironwood couldn’t control. But after spending volumes sympathizing with Qrow and feeling bad for him and understanding that a lot of his problems stemmed from his horrible lot in life that he wrongly blamed himself for, to see him ready to kill a former friend who is even more affected by and ruled by a semblance than Qrow ever was made me seriously annoyed with the writing. In my opinion, they should’ve had Qrow know about his semblance, know that it was affecting his every choice, be deeply sympathetic and bothered by the situation, and be trying to get out of jail so he could break Ironwood’s aura and jolt him out of his affected state. It would’ve been much, much better in my opinion, for Ironwood’s character, Qrow’s character, and the story as a general whole. The way that villain Ironwood was done just is not interesting to me in any way. Not only did CRWBY miss any opportunity to present a compelling hero-turned-villain story, but they also invented a reason for Ironwood to be deeply sympathetic and easily redeemed and then made no one understand that this was a problem and seem to be going out of their way to act like it’s not there at all to make Ironwood a full villain! I seriously can’t understand CRWBY’s choices. In my opinion, they should’ve either made Ironwood a sympathetic hero forced into doing villainous actions by this semblance that they should’ve rephrased in terms of how it works, or they should’ve just left him with no explained semblance.

I've found the best RWBY fans to interact with are the ones who like the show but still acknowledge its flaws.

Like, so much of the FNDM seems to have this "All or Nothing" mentality where you either unconditionally love and praise everything Rooster Teeth does or base your entire personality around hating everything Rooster Teeth has so much as breathed on, and honestly both extremes are horribly unhealthy.

I mostly agree with this, though I feel like it's worth pointing out that a lot of the "unconditional love" fans are really just fed up with the years' worth of negativity on the part of people who make hating the show their entire identity. I think it stems from the YouTubers, to be honest. For a lot of them, producing content is an actual job. While I don't personally care for that content and have no interest in watching any RWBY YouTuber, I can't dunk on any of them too hard because they actually get paid to do this and I'm well aware that there's a certain price for which my personal integrity is for sale: if it meant I would never have to sacrifice my physical and mental health working 40-60 hours a week ever again, if it meant I'd have time for myself and the people I care about, if it meant I could devote myself to the things I love or use my hypothetical wealth to make the world around me better... yeah, I'd absolutely base my brand around hating a show and appealing to shitheads, as long as I'm not expected to start shoving people down the alt-right pipeline. I like to think there's somewhere I'd draw the line, that there are things I wouldn't do for money, but the thought of not being fucking miserable and in physical pain at almost all times is really tempting.

Anyway, the point is that for at least some of these people, hating on RWBY is an actual job, as stupid as it sounds. It puts food on the table, which means they have a vested interest in building their brand, which means promoting their content and getting it exposure, which in turn means that avoiding negativity can take actual effort and isn't always as simple as just blocking people you don't like if you want to participate in fandom spaces that aren't total echo chambers. I don't know how blocking works on reddit because I mostly use my reddit account to look at pictures of breasts, but what I do know is that even going to the main RWBY subreddit to do something like read the reaction thread to a new Ice Queendom episode runs a not-insignificant risk of at least passively exposing me to the newest stupid take to escape quarantine in r/rwbycritics. As a result, there's a subset of the audience that feeds itself by whipping up negativity, by targeting emotional responses, that can be pretty hard to escape. I don't blame people who just don't want to deal with it anymore for responding defensively, though I'll concede that it can make having nuanced discussion... difficult.

This is not to say that everyone who is critical of RWBY is exactly the same. What most people think of when they talk about the critical side of the community contains people with anything from the relatively uncontroversial belief that the Battle of Haven was poorly choreographed or that some of the early voice acting wasn't very good to people with spicy hot takes like "Team RWBY are the real villains" and "Blake abused Adam and ruined his life". I guess I'm technically a critic, given that I post about things I like about RWBY, things I dislike, things I think worked well and things I think didn't, and then try to support and explain my views, but I don't really like thinking of myself that way because I don't want to be lumped in with the more extreme elements of either RWDE or rwbycritics. It's why I use the "analysis" tag instead of "rwde" (well, that and I think using "rwde" inherently sets a more hostile tone than I'm going for in a lot of cases).

I do think it's funny that RWDE and rwbycritics frequently come at the show from completely opposite directions (think "I'm worried that Rooster Teeth is using Bumbleby to string queer viewers along with the promise of representation without ever delivering on it" vs. "Rooster Teeth defiled Monty's memory* by making his action show political (read: gay)" and think the possibility for friendly fire between the two is hilarious. My solution is simple:

So yeah, the critics ("critics") definitely annoy me more than the people who are just relentlessly positive (though this may be because I've never personally experienced the harassment that each group supposedly directs at the other) given that most of the people who like the show at least engage with the text in good faith, while certain critics... do not. There are definitely a couple RWDE blogs that I think are reasonable, and even r/rwbycritics will inadvertently generate something resembling a coherent thought every once in a while, but I don't particularly care to engage with that community beyond browsing it once in a while out of curiosity because the good isn't worth wading through the garbage. RWDE is better in the sense that content is associated with specific blogs rather than threads posted to a subreddit, meaning that if someone posts nothing but stupid takes you don't want to interact with, you can just block them.

As for Rooster Teeth the company, I'm not an expert on its history by any means, but I know they've had issues with crunch in the past, I'm aware of the drama after Monty's death, and I know their brand was built on dudebro humor, so like... I'm sure there's been plenty to criticize in the past and is still plenty to criticize now, but I don't really care about Rooster Teeth beyond the fact that it produces RWBY and don't watch any of the studio's non-RWBY-related content. There's really not much I can give anyone here. Other people are a lot more invested in the company one way or another than I am.

*I really hate the "Monty's vision" argument. Nothing proves a point like dragging a dead man's name into your argument so you can pretend you knew what he wanted better than the people who actually knew and worked with him. Just utterly classless.
