#this reminds me of wallace from wallace and gromit
Have you seen this childhood show: Nanalan (2000-2006), Canada (English)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Commentary/Context/Memories: No user commentary
[Mod A: I am so sorry to say this, but whenever I see Mona (the green girl), I do not think “Who's that wonderful girl?” as due to my recently realized (as a result of running this poll blog), long-term pupaphobia (phobia of puppets), I instead thought “nooo change the channel!!” whenever I saw her as a kid haha. It may also be because she has front facing predator eyes like the evil penguin from Wallace and Gromit. Luckily for Mona, she is experiencing a renaissance, as she and her song are having a moment on TikTok (I also remember gifs of the show trending on Tumblr back in 2015-2016). Nanalan (a shortened version of Nana’s Land) was about Mona exploring her Nana’s house and backyard with their dog Russell as they find little objects and listen to stories from her Nana. The actual concept of the show is very cute (reminds me of my own Nana and her various knickknacks) but my pupaphobia really kept me from engaging with this show long enough to actually appreciate the story/similarities to my own life haha]

Star Wars Visions (Season 2)
Since these eps are all roughly under 20 minutes I'm just lumping my thoughts under the cut for all of the episodes.
SITH
Art style is nice! (Kinda reminds me of Spider-Verse, which I love.) Color and lines everywhere makes the environment really unique. I want more to Lola's story.
SCREECHER'S REACH
Cartoon Saloon art style I love you and would recognize you anywhere. I'm in the mood to watch Song of the Sea again. Sith Mother had Looks honestly? Beautiful and appropriately unsettling.
IN THE STARS
Favorite episode. Claymation is always impressive to me. A good Imp is a drowned Imp.
Tumblr media
Paint powered by starlight is something I wish I thought of for some fantasy stories I've been writing/written in the past, but man, this scene was pretty.
I AM YOUR MOTHER
Might've been my least favorite episode honestly? I'm not sure. The animation was done by Aardman, and apparently they had a Wallace and Gromit cameo in there somewhere, which I missed. I know I just said claymation is always impressive to me, but in my opinion I don't think a lot of the species we know/recognize translated very well in their style.
JOURNEY TO THE DARK HEAD
First time I saw Toul I couldn't help but think "Oh of course you have white hair and trauma." from my anime phase.
Also should have expected that Bichan was gonna be attractive under the Very Extra mask.
THE SPY DANCER
This episode just proves to me that Cirque du Soleil could go crazy in the Star Wars universe.
THE BANDITS OF GOLAK
Clothing design absolutely SLAPS for this episode. Just about everything really - music, atmosphere, ect. My oldest sibling feelings really came into play here though because I just wished Rani would listen to her brother and do as he requested. Charuk's trying to protect you and you're screwing around/attracting unnecessary attention, Rani... Kids are gonna be kids, though.
The lightsaber duel between Ragul and the Inquisitor was stunning. She may be older than the Inq. but she can still kick ass. 💪
THE PIT
The implemented timelapses in this episode were very cool. I had trouble watching the segment were Crux climbs out of the pit because I was so sure it'd end badly and he'd be shown falling to his death and nobody making it out.
And then he's thrown back into the pit by Stormtroopers later on. I was right about that being the way he died, just not right about when.
AAU'S SONG
Aau is precious and I'd die for her.
As these are all non-sequiturs they'll never explain how the Sith managed to bleed all of that kyber in the mountains on Korba but it'd be interesting to find out how. Like that was a lot of corrupted kyber.

despite all the technical difficulties, here are the shiny recolors from the stream! Details/inspirations below the cut vv
Thank you everyone that popped in and hung out with us!
pancham: red pandas! imo regular shiny pancham looks like it's heading in that direction, but its much more brown than red :^/
froakie: Froakie's shiny is in my least favorite category of shiny: barely distinguishable from it's regular color palette. I started off with a classic frog green for my redesign, but went with a more muted tone when I learned froakie is partially based off of the tungara frog
Teddiursa: very simple, I wanted my shiny teddiursa to remind me of the moon, not nickelodeon slime (as @funonion001 put it). Went with warmer off-whites for this cutie because they reminded me of Wallace and Gromit's Grand Day Out (I do wish I incorporated a bit more yellow now that I'm looking at it but I still am very happy with the results!)

Influences from British programs in the new dhmis series
Or I think there's at least some similarities? This is just speculation and personal opinion tbh
---
Lily and Todney remind me of the twins from the original series of Fireman Sam (1987)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
...
The residents of Mulhoven kinda look like the original stop motion Postman Pat (1981) characters
Tumblr media Tumblr media
...
The in-universe show Grolton & Hovris definitely feels like a Wallace and Gromit (1989) spoof
Tumblr media Tumblr media
...
Finally I think the intro is heavily inspired by ahows likw Camberwick Green (1966) or at least the spinning house segment and jingle is
youtube
youtube
---
So yeah overall this series feels very nostalgic to me and not just because of the original shorts years ago!
Segments like the time child dacing feel very CBBC (older kids channel) and moments like the Mulhoven segment felt very Cbeebies (younger kids channel)
It's hard to explain clearly but the series does a good job at emulating different TV channel's vibes and I love it!

They had an “Amphibia” marathon on yesterday and I’m reminded how much I enjoy the Chicka-lisk and wish he was featured more than the one episode (and in the theme song of course). He seems like a nice enough monster; it’s not his fault no one understands him and he’s so big and scary looking (granted, he also has fire-breath and petrifying laser-eyes, which are things to be scared of ;) ).
It also reminded me of one of my favorite random Easter eggs, where we get to see a wanted poster of a penguin disguised as a chicken. XD I loved watching “Wallace & Gromit” growing up, but the fact that this world has a penguin who is a thief just cracks me up and blows my mind. XD (Which is saying something considering this show has giant talking frogs, robots, dimensional portals, and magic ;) ).

The power of libraries and card catalogs: Revolutionary Girl Utena shines through [Part 1]
Recently, I was watching a Japanese anime, Revolutionary Girl Utena, which aired in 1997, I stumbled upon scenes showcasing libraries, reference, and much more, time and time again. This is a series that can be watched on YouTube, with subtitles, or dubbed, whichever you prefer while having over 973 fan fiction works on Archive of Our Own. There was much more than other series, or even Hollywood films like The Public, The Truman Show, Harold and Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay, Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Wear-Rabbit, the latter that had a brief library scene. It's actually extraordinary as I've never seen an animated series feature libraries as many times like this one!
In the show's fourth episode ("The Sunlit Garden - Prelude"), part of the Student Council Saga, there is a short scene in a library that is clearly very scholarly. This isn't a surprise as all of the characters are students of Ohtori Academy, set somewhere in Japan. In this scene, Juri Arisugawa, the fencing team captain at the academy meets Miki Kaoru (the person with the blue hair), secretary of the Student Council.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Miki is correcting a test for Anthy, the Rose Bride, and is studying in the library, clearly dedicated to his studies. The whole scene is not even a minute long, but it portrays the library as a serious place when you do serious work, with the lighting on the table reminding me a bit of the Library of Congress. It's very different from the library depicted in Steven Universe, Futurama, or the ones in that 2008 Harold & Kumar movie and The Truman Show. It also reminds me of a brief scene in a church library in the Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit (2005) film, which ends up being a key part of the story.
This brings me to "The Boys of the Black Rose," the 14th episode of the show, and part of the Black Rose Saga. In this scene, Mikage, the head of the Mikage Seminar at the academy, who wants to gain power for himself, is using what looks like a microfilm machine to examine a newspaper:
Tumblr media
He is greeted by two men in business tricks saying his "paper" did the trick as it allowed for their research office to be chosen for a consulting office. He almost laughs them off, continuing to look at the paper.
Tumblr media
After these men try to give him a gift, he brushes it off, and they soon walk away, calling him a genius. He sure looks like one with all his books on the shelves and materials on the desk! It's almost the stereotypical portrayal of academia, as aloof and dedicated to their work. This is reinforced by the fact that after this he continues to look at the scanner like little has happened:
Tumblr media
Later on in the episode, I thought it was a little comedic when Miki tells Utena (the girl with pink hair), the series protagonist, with Anthy standing beside her, about the research building right after he has come back from the reference area, which is a lie, as he was actually talking to Mikage about how he wasn't "good enough" to be part of his seminar. He almost acted with a shock that Utena didn't know about this, almost like a person telling something they just learned for the first time:
Tumblr media
I'd also like to point out there was one scene in this episode that seemed to be an homage to a scene in that episode of She-Ra and the Princesses of Power that focuses on the magical library, where Utena and Anthy were sitting on a couch, with Akio on the other couch, but maybe this was just a coincidence. Regardless, none of these libraries are like the hilarious sewer library from Futurama!
Jumping to episode 18 of the show, "Mitsuru's Growing Pains," in the Black Rose Saga, the academic library is featured again. In the library, Mitsuru, who is looking through books, asks Utena and Anthy what it means to be grown up. Anthy says that she and Utena have done "some adult things" which is undefined, although there may be some romantic connotations there.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
After this, he ends up going to the Black Rose Seminar and tries to fight Utena, almost in a trance. Like with all her duels, apart from when she battled Touga, she wins, and the Black Rose is destroyed. The episode goes on, the mentions of libraries and archive-like environments are not over.
This theme is followed in another episode, part of the Black Rose saga, episode 21 (also known as "Troublesome Insects"). During the episode, one of Nanami's followers, Keiko misses a party. Instead, she goes to a presumed library, or perhaps an archives, to get student council records that Nanami didn't want to do.

location: on top of a trailer, locke rowe. status: closed for @plumassieres
foot tapping against the roof of their trailer, ambient edm playing from the diy-speaker of a phone inside a mug, marty turns their attention to dima, examining their side profile. high, and in a weird state of trauma regression, marty imagines him made of thin sheets of kebab meat and the leather from old boots, hot-glue-gunned and stapled into skin. “ don’t take this the wrong way, ”  marty starts, which usually means they’re about to say something offensive.  “  but you kind of remind me of that robot dog from wallace and gromit: a close shave. ”  bringing the end of the joint to their lips, they take another toke, then pass it to dima, careful not to catch their fingers in case it prompts him to startle away. sometimes, when being around dima feels like being around a rabid dog, or a feral cat that might hiss and scurry off at any moment.  “ i don’t know, i guess i can just imagine if you ever got struck in the face with a glass bottle, you’d just like, chew the glass up and spit it straight back out, no sweat. it’s kinda badass. ”

Experimenting with clay, using things I found in my bag as tools (ruler/pencil etc) I made a tiny head first and then decided to work on a bigger scale.
I tried to create the effect of a puffer jacket with the lines using a ruler.
I used a photograph from a cafe as a source and tried to create one of the people out of clay in my own style. The final product reminded me of a Wallace and Gromit character.

Film, novels, video games, and more: Archivists and archivy
For today's post, I'd like to highlight some archivists I've found in popular culture, making this similar to my post back in August. None of these archivists are in anime or animation, but they are worth mentioning. Perhaps my prediction of having trouble finding representation, when it comes to archives, won't come to pass after all!
Reprinted from my Wading Through the Cultural Stacks WordPress blog. Originally published on Oct. 17, 2020.
Let's start with Arthur White. He was an English actor who played Ernie Trigg in A Touch of Frost, a crime drama, a character described as a "police archivist" on his Wikipedia page. In the world of film, there's also The King's Case Note, a comedy film from South Korea where a king and his adviser, an archivist search to find the truth behind a crime which, according to the Wikipedia page, "threatens the stability of the kingdom." That reminds me of some plotlines in Tangled, where a number of episodes have archivy themes, which I may focus on as part of an upcoming post on this blog. In terms of other films, there is Cloud Atlas, where Sonmi 451 is an "Archivist" who records the story of a dissident in a device after her trial and arrest, which is also reflected in the novel too.
youtube
More subtle is Goronwhy, an unseen archivist in the 2010 miniseries, Wallace and Gromit's World of Invention. Finally, there's "Hyena," the June 2016 episode of 12 Monkeys, a TV series which was based on Terry Gilliam's bizarre 1995 film of the same name, where the protagonists search for an archivist, traveling through time to figure out what was happening.
There are some novels that also feature archivists as well. In the 2018 sci-fi novel, Record of a Spaceborn Few, by Becky Chambers, one of the characters portrayed is an elderly archivist named Isabel. Then there's the epistolary novel titled The Secret History of Twin Peaks which is part of David Lynch's Twin Peaks franchise, where there is a mysterious archivist who brings together a dossier of materials which is examined by an FBI analyst. I don't care much for the franchise, to be honest, or David Lynch, but it's worth mentioning this archivist.
Lynch, as IndieWire pointed out, "fetishizes an outmoded vision of American identity and bemoans its collapse" and was a vocal supporter of Reagan in the 1980s, even if his thoughts elsewhere are a mish-mash of ideas.
I also came across E.T.A. Hoffman's The Golden Pot: A Modern Fairytale, which includes a registrar who copies old manuscripts for an archivist, the latter who apparently cares about document preservation and is later shown to be salamander...who has to find mates for his daughters? This is one strange romantic story, to say the least!
I'd also like to mention the Final Fantasy Record Keeper game, where players control a researcher who works in the history department. So perhaps that has some archivy themes. The description of the game on the official website makes this abundantly clear:
"In a glorious kingdom that thrives on the harmony between magic and art, epic tales of valor and hope have been passed from one generation to the next. The records of these great chronicles uphold the peace and prosperity of all civilization. The kingdom sealed these records inside paintings, to safeguard the balance of the world. That is until, without warning, the records within the paintings began to fade away... Darkness fell upon the world, bringing catastrophe and ruin. The time has come for you to save the kingdom's future. Tyro has restored the Battle Records held in the paintings, protecting the world from a terrible threat from beyond. Now as their investigation continues, they discover an ominous magic emanating from mysterious Corrupted Paintings. But these paintings do not hold Battle Records like the others. These new paintings hold Story Records chronicling the adventures of great heroes from across the realms."
On a totally different note, I found interesting the title of "Majumdar," occasionally used as a surname, which translates to record keeper or archivist from Arabic and Persian, according to the Dictionary of American Family Names. It comes from the words majuma (collection) and dar (possessor).
I would say that archivists are more than collections possessors, although there is occasionally gatekeeping in the profession and among some who are archivists for sure.
That's all for today's post. As always, I look forward to your comments and suggestions on what I should focus on next.

‘Today I Listened...’ Day #38
‘Today I Listened to ‘Nabucco: Overture’ by Giuseppe Verdi. The staccato melody that comes in after a minute and a half reminds me of The Immigrant Song – minus a soprano going “Ah-ah-aaaaaaaaaaaah-ah!”, which seems a waste. Then the warm brass chords come in and suddenly I’m watching Brassed Off, A Muppets Christmas Carol or Wallace & Gromit.
Two minutes in there’s just great use of texture: the oboe melody in octave unison, the homophonic pizzicato strings, the soft swelling horns that come in a bit later. At some points where the accompanying strings are playing soft arpeggios, you can tell that’s been taken from the left hand as the composer works out the arrangement on piano, which really demystifies the orchestration process.
Verdi rounds it all off nicely with a typical bombastic ending. He even brings back the Immigrant Song bit in a major key! Happy Immigrant Song!

I do feel a bit sorry for Misery Guts Prince Harry although it appears he went down this path willfully with his eyes wide open. The dude doesn’t have very good lifeskills. Living in Southern California is expensive for the average Joe. The crowd he and his wife aspire to join have very expensive tastes and lifestyles and are notorious for the “what can you do for me” mindset. Harry and his wife offer nothing aside from a few short lived headlines that don’t portray a good look by the couple. Harry looks miserable as though he doesn’t fair well in the sun. His face is always red. It’s highly doubtful that he’ll be able to cope here long-term. California can be a hard adjustment because the reality is not what you see on TV or the movies. The majority of Americans aren’t interested in being preached at by a member of a foreign royal family. He has zero in common with the average American.
The people he wants to run with WILL talk behind his back, WILL make fun of him, and WILL use him for what they can then toss him away like last season’s handbag. People in Hollywood aren’t stupid. They know a user when the see one, and MM is a user. The best she can hope for is a role on one of the “Housewives of Whatever” programs with all the other irrelevant women trying to claw their way to the top. It’s sad in a pathetic kind of way because MM just comes across clueless, desperate and unrealistic about what she brings to the table. There is always going to be someone younger, prettier and smarter coming up behind her. These people aren’t your friends. Your worth is based on what can you do for me right here, right now.
Long, long before MM, Lainey used to call him Hot Harry and disparage Prince William. Harry is not a handsome man, and his poor attitude does him no favors. His looks remind me of Wallace from “Wallace and Gromit”.  He seems paranoid with all the “protect my family” business which his wife only exacerbates and feeds. The 3 year age difference between the princes does not account for one getting a handle on his feelings and dealing with life while the other sees danger in every shadow. Royalty aren’t exempt from the mental health diseases that are present in all walks of life. Go back in his family tree, and it’s easy to see examples. Just because you are Royal does not mean you are a nice person.
______________________________________________________________________
Absolutely. I agree there are some very negative aspects to Harry’s personality that were finessed by his pr.
I don’t feel much sympathy for him, though. He made his bed and he won’t even have to lie on it for long. His family will no doubt bail him out this mess, just like they’ve done in the past.
But I agree that California is a horrible match for him. He’s a true fish out of water.

Seen a lot of wallace and gromit posts recently and it reminded me of a time i was at the craft store with a friend and i found a pack of these
Tumblr media
And i held up the pack of grommets and said loudly to my friend down the aisle, "so i found these, but where are the Wallaces?"
My friend didnt laugh but a middle aged man also in that aisle got a good chuckle from that
