You had been a lifelong wrestling fan. There were references to wrestlers from way before you'd even been alive in many of your songs. With your music gaining more traction, it only made sense for the WWE to reach out to you. You had expected the email from Stephanie McMahon to be about making an appearance at a show taping or something, not for you to write one of their superstar's new theme songs. To make it a little more challenging, she hadn't disclosed who the song was for, just the general theme that she was looking for.

And so, for weeks you had worked on writing the song and music to fit what she had described. You were no stranger to adversity or being seen as the bad guy. Being a woman in the music scene that you had dove into wasn't exactly an easy task. Most people were past the whole woman thing, but there were quite a few big names whose outdated ideas hadn't exactly helped you gain traction. Still, you had excelled and if the rumors were true, your debut album was in the talks for an award or two.

"Y/n, there's someone to see you." You weren't used to being interrupted while brainstorming, but something told you that this particular producer's assistant had a good reason. You set your guitar on its rack and followed him out of the little room where you'd been trying to write the first single for your new EP. It was hard having to immediately start working on new music after finishing up a tour, but you were glad to get studio time.

"Do you have a minute to sit and chat?"

"Oh yeah, we can hang in this room. Don't mind the mess, brainstorming always gets a little hectic," you told her. Rhea seemed almost giddy at the idea of being in the same room as you while you were writing new music. "So, what prompted the theme change?"

"They're pushing a new gimmick for my return. They change all sorts of stuff all the time," Rhea told you. You understood what she meant, the entertainment industry in general was a little bit sporadic. "I'm pretty honored you accepted, it might sound lame, but I am a huge fan."

Yoko Shimomura Probably the greatest video game composer of all time hands down no fucking contest. She's the genius behind the Kingdom Hearts sountrack, and has also contributed her expertise to Final Fantasy XV, the Mario and Luigi games, Mario RPG and Secrets of Mana. Her music can be grand and orchestral or quiet and sweet or energetic and wiggly, and her use of character motifs is something to behold.

Danny Baranowsky Another video game composer, Danny B is known best for his work on Meat Boy, Binding of Isaac and Crypt of the Necrodancer. His tracks have an unmatched energy, from BoI's quiet melodic horror to Necrodancer's get up and boogie beats. And of course, Meat Boy's wiggletastic MOVE YOUR MEAT, BOY tunes.

Shiro SAGISU An anime composer whose work on Evangelion and Bleach is beyond description. And like, I wouldn't recommend either of the SHOWS, but his music is absolutely fucking unreal. Especially his heavy use of Spanish guitar in the Arrancar Arc of Bleach alongside his usual heavy orchestral violins and pianos.

Masayoshi Takanaka A rock and city pop musician in the 80s and 90s, whose music I've heard described as "surf-dude J-rock" which, yeah, accurate. But some of his later stuff is also really experimental, getting a bit into grunge or orchestral rock.

Lena Raine A composer who's made some songs for recent Minecraft updates, but most people know her best for the soundtrack to Celeste. Which is utterly fantastic, it's BEAUTIFUL, managing to capture both the grand scale of the mountain climb and the heavily personal emotional stakes of our protagonist Madeline. Heavy use of gorgeous synth alongside piano and drums and guitar makes the whole soundtrack SOUND magical and otherworldly, which fits the game well.

Dios I discovered Dios through their guitarist, Ichika Nito, whose riffs on Youtube are unmatched. Magic hands, I swear. But Dios's vocalist, Tanaka, also has one of the most unique singing voices I've ever heard, he's got almost an Italian or Spanish rolling cadence to some of his phrases. The guy's also just got a fantastic voice, and Dios's songs are extremely solid poppy rock.

Akintoye A fantastic lyricist with an incredibly fast and articulate voice, a great sense of rhythm and flow, he's also just one of the most charismatic singers / rappers I've ever heard. His energy is absolutely addicting, and he's got such catchy layered melodies it's SO hard to not wiggle my fingers off my hands when listening.

Imogen Heap Most people recognize her from OOO WHATCHA SAY, OOO THAT YOU ONLY MEANT WELL, WELL OF COURSE YOU DID and like. Hide and Seek is an underrated song tbh but Speak for Yourself and Eclipse are just in general fantastic albums. It's impossible for me to describe her genre so I'm just gonna say...music that my very white hippie mom listens to all the time.

Hole - Live Through This

Probably one of the best grunge albums of all time and by probably I mean definitely. Courtney Love gets unfortunately overshadowed by Kurt (who I love and would agree) but she was a legend in her own right who produced music just as good as Kurt. Also the whole conspiracy thing is super offensive. Kurt and Courtney were in love and anyone who says she killed him is expressing an insane parasocial conspiracy.

The lyrics and vocal performances on this thing are legendary. The riffs addictive and containing that perfect grimey pop chords that I love about some of the best grunge albums. If you haven’t checked this out but love nirvana then you absolutely should check this out. If you haven’t checked this out in general you absolutely should check this out. Fucking legendary album.

EVERYONE'S POKEMON THEMES

Bright and happy, but still intense. The theme exemplifies Leon's power, but also shows that the battle is fun. Everyone-the people in the audience, your Pokémon, the trainers, you'll all having a blast giving each other everything you've got. Leon's 'greatest champion ever' schtick is definitely annoying, but his battle style is wave after wave of unstoppable, insane amounts of power, and I feel like that's very Raph of him.

Plus he just looks like he'd be fun to hug.

Leo:

At first I thought this might be a little dark for Leo, but even in canon Leo is quite a bit more emo than he outwardly shows. The music is fast, the heavy beat in the background giving a sense of immense but guarded power, like you'd only see the full extent of Zinnia's power in the seconds before she killed you. And the, for lack of a better word, feminine riffs give the whole thing a very unique edge to it. I feel like that's perfect for Leo. Outwardly intimidating, yes, but his true power he keeps hidden away, and it runs very, very deep.

As a side note, I feel like Leo would use fairy types.

Donnie:

...Do I even have to say anything else?

For real, I love how this theme is so spooky and intense and the Recon Squad looks so intimidating, but every one of these guys is actually a precious cinnamon roll. They could absolutely murder you with their pinky finger, but that's not what they're about. Donnie is...maybe not so morally white, but at his core he will always stand for good. He's allowed a few villain arcs here and there, and by villain arcs he means he'll dress up and have a few villainous monologues before getting bored with the whole thing.

But for real, this theme goes so hard. The whole thing is poppy, bubbly, interspersed with a harder counter-melody with what sounds like bell tolls played over it. This is a very calculated sound. Iris is one of the harder champions to beat, made even more impressive by the fact that she's supposed to be eleven or twelve. She, like the player in every game, is a legitimate child prodigy. This theme is meant to hammer in the fact-yes, she's a child, she's silly and likes pink and poofy dresses, and she is immensely powerful. If you underestimate her she will steamroll right over you, and this is just the beginning for her-she will only get more powerful from here. That childlike zest, the overwhelming power in spite of people's expectations-that's Mikey.

I feel like this sort of intensity just matches April very well. It's super modern, it feels like city streetlights and neon signs, but there's this edge of lightness to it. We're going hardcore here, but we're still having fun! (It's fun because we're putting our whole pussies into it)

Splinter:

This version in particular! It gives a sense of spiraling at the beginning, an "oh shit" moment when you realize you're locked into battle with a leader that gave you trouble as a child-and they've only gotten stronger. The pace is fast, intense, almost overwhelmingly so, and even when the beat lets up it doesn't do it by much. Since it's a remix of the Kanto Gym Leader theme we've had since the very first game in the nineties, it has an older and almost nostalgic edge to it. But these are some of the final bosses of the game-you face these leaders as a Champion and they come at you like one.

I feel like that's pretty fitting for Splinter. He's old, but he's grown more powerful with age. If you face off with him, you will be very quickly thinking "oh shit."

Cassandra:

The theme is fast and chaotic, almost manic, representing Bede's lack of stability and family. He's desperate for someone to care about him, to fit in somewhere. This fits with the backstory I've given Cass-parents are both addicts, issues with growing up in poverty and being in and out of foster care. Even though her dad is still present in her life and does love her, he's not exactly a stable presence and their relationship is very strained, and that affects Cass a lot more than she wants to admit. She's straining to find someone to emulate and puts everything into impressing every parental figure she meets, first with the Foot Dads and then with Draxum.

Also the chaos just fits Cass's balls-to-the-wall personality.

Draxum:

Like. Ideology-wise, he's probably closer to Maxie and Archie, especially considering after you beat them they're basically like "well that sucks, guess I'm your dad now." But this theme was really the only thing dark and edgy enough for him.

This is probably how he thinks of himself; Season 2 Draxum would have a totally different theme.

This is controversial but I don’t care. Jimmy is so much better than Eric Clapton, and thankfully a lot of people think that too. The thing about Jimmy’s playing is that he plays with emotion and he truly loves it you know what I mean? I do think Eric is also talented, but he shouldn’t be in the top 3 greatest guitarists. His songs after cream are mostly meh and idk I just always had that feeling that Eric was jealous of Jimmy. But I have heard he helped Jimmy with his addiction and that’s nice, but he also seemed to be judgmental about Jimmy when he was suffering from heroin (I watched the arms concert and sometimes notices Eric giving jimmy mean glares). I think I’m overthinking it but idk other people noticed it too. I also remember Eric once said that Led Zeppelin was “too loud” or something like that idk it gave me a jealous vibe from him.

I just love jimmy’s playing, I know later on when he was on drugs that his playing wasn’t the best, but I can still feel the emotion. Especially at the 1983 arms concert, his playing was not the best that’s for sure, but there was so much emotion in it it made me sad because it showed he was in a lot of pain. Sorry this is very long I always wanted to say this Jimmy>Eric.

hi anon! eric clapton's songs, along with his hypnotising riffs and impeccable blues taste, have always been part of my life. he's always been a great inspiration to me, so much so that at the age of 4, a time when if you asked me what my favourite song was i'd start singing the intro to Sunshine of Your Love, i asked my parents for my very first guitar.

but as i grew older, my taste in rock and my beloved blues slowly expanded, until i eventually found jimmy page.

jimmy was intoxicating from the very first note i heard him play.

i remember so vividly being in my early teens and clicking 'play' on Whole Lotta Love, hearing that riff so familiar yet unknown to me, like a melody i had heard a million times before and yet, at the time, new to my ears.

it was powerful, rough, real, and like nothing i had ever heard before. i felt like it shattered a part of me and then recreated it fully.

i remember thinking “this is IT!! i found IT” and listening to the rest of the song with my mouth wide open, in awe, appreciating every second, smiling at the thought of being able to play and replay and replay that song as much as i wanted to.

this was my first encounter with the music of jimmy page. and without a doubt, now in my early 20's whenever i click 'play' on one of his songs i still feel the exact same way that i felt when i was barely a teen, that excitement, that irresistible energy in each song that many artists come close to but no one is able to replicate.

now, clapton is a great blues guitarist. have you heard him on the ARMS RAH concert, anon? he was impeccable. he studies each note and delivers it with utmost precision, as if to show all the love and respect he holds for the blues genre with every single stroke of his pick.

but when jimmy's music came into my life, anything i knew about guitars, all my guitar heroes and rock n roll idols, felt tiny compared to the energy he could unleash in just a few seconds of playing.

i was absolutely astonished. i still am.

jimmy is jimmy. his huge list of influences from any genre around the world, and the fact that whenever he plays he reveals his entire heart, each note being a manifestation of his inner self, make him absolutely special and unique.

is he the best guitar player of all time? i don't know, probably not. all i know is he's capable of triggering emotions in me that no other musician has even been able to, and for this i love him dearly.

so... in fewer words, i agree with you 😌

Well, it happened, I saw AB again June the third in Tilburg and what can I say? It was awesome. Yes, my little recap is a little late but I also had Gojira on the agenda the next Tuesday, wild week. So yeah as I'm currently suffering in front of a ventilator to bat off the heat, if you do want to hear my thoughts feel free to read further!

I arrived a little bit later at the venue than I originally planned - lets say a good 30 minutes - due to construction and Google maps not knowing what to make of that BUT at last I arrived, about three and a half hours before the doors opened, and there where only about 10 other people in line so lucky me!

I'll fast forward through the boring sitting in line in the sun on the curb turning my ass into mush, though I did get to chat with some amazing people. AB fans are the best. There were about 20 people with VIP tickets, so a spot at the rail was out of the question - also I wanted to get a shirt before the gig started because I would miss my train home if I hung around too long afterwards - but once the doors opened and I secured a tour tee, I managed to land in-between 3/4 row at the front. Sweet! (Thanks great grandfathers who gave me long legs so I could powerwalk as fast as possible. Security didn't want us to run you see.)

Mammoth WVH opened once again and they kicked ass! There were some sound issues during the first few songs, so Wolfie's voice and the guitars were kinda muddled, but that got fixed real quick and it was a great set. The crowd got pretty into it.

And then it was happening. The lights dimmed for a second time after waiting around for few and though the majority of the people around me were already in great mood, you could really feel the crowd come to life. Are there going to be more puns in here? Probably because I can't help myself ha.

I stood smack-dab in the middle, with no tall concert goers in front of me, so I had a perfect view when AB took the stage. This would have been the perfect opportunity to take some pictures but me being me, well, I'm always way too swept up in the moment and the music to even think about taking out my phone haha.

Broken Wings was beautiful and hearing Sin After Sin again was a treat. The biggest surprise for me however was hearing Coeur D'Alene. COEUR D'ALENE. Yes, I was aware AB pulled this one out of the box during their US tour, but man I'm so happy they played it in Tilburg as well. ABIII is my favorite AB album so this was very special to me.

Myles took a little break and Mark took over the vocal duties for Burn it Down and he absolutely crushed it. You go Mark 💜

After the amazing Cry of Achilles, it was time to get emotional with a triple kick to the face. I'm not ashamed to say my waters were rising a little when Myles serenaded the crowd with Watch Over You, followed by In Loving Memory and then, of course, Blackbird. Boi, if I ever have kids or grandkids, I will make sure that song gets passed on down because it will never get old. What a masterpiece.

The emotional portion of the concert quickly got pushed aside by the energetic Come to Life, another all time favorite of mine (and the crowd, from what I could hear haha). A fan had requested earlier if AB could play Stay that night, and they did! Which was very sweet.

What followed were the bangers Isolation and of course Metalingus - were we all obediently went down on our knees (I fell over a few times because my legs were pretty fried at that point lol) for the classic "jump up and down like a kangaroo during the breakdown".

We got treated with Rise Today as the encore - chanting "we want more" with the crowd likely doesn't have any effect whatsoever but I like to think that it does haha.

And then it was over. Is there a thing such as post-concert depression? Man those hours went by quick. Picks were thrown out, setlists in the form of paper-planes; the usual mayhem. I'm terrible at catching anything because I'm always afraid I'll get accidentally socked in the face. There did however bounce something off my shoulder, which I assumed was a pick from Brian because a millisecond later the guy standing next to me snatched it from the ground. Better luck next time, but thanks Brian lol. And then the drumsticks were flying and I took cover once more.

Going to concerts is still new territory for me and even though it was only the second time I saw AB live, being a big fan aside, they killed it. What a band. What an amazing, talented bunch of musicians. The crowd was having a blast and AB too seemed to really enjoy and revel in the energy. Even Myles commented at one point "There's always a great vibe when we play here." My voice was gone from loudly singing along to all the songs and I probably slept for about 12 hours the next day.

Compared to the first time I saw them in Amsterdam last year December at the Ziggo Dome, I prefer this gig with the smaller venue. As much as I love that AB gets to play bigger venues in Europe, selfish me wish they could stick to smaller ones like the 013 in Tilburg.

I've been a fan for over 14 years now and to be able to see my favorite band live two times in the span of only 7 months is crazy lucky to me. If you have the opportunity to see them, do it! You won't regret it.

I love the darker tone of that song. (Maybe a little bit of a stray away from Taylor’s usual? I don’t know her well enough to say for sure.) I was struck with inspiration in the form of ‘i play bass guitar in a band and am in the mood to project onto my favourite characters’ so ta da!! here is:

Starting off with fellow lesbian, Cass Cain: definitely plays bass guitar. the kind of broody bass player that lurks behind the band but when on stage, absolutely bodies the riffs.

Steph Brown: a hundred percent she’s the loud and boisterous rhythm guitarist/vocalist. she is BOUNCING around on the stage, giving tons of energy.

Tim Drake: for timmers i want to say drums, that’s the vibe i’m getting. like, it definitely goes with the skater aesthetic that he used to have. he’s a little bit unassuming at first but in the drum breaks he goes all out.

Dick Grayson: i am constantly fluctuating between the hc that he’s is the best singer you’ve ever heard or that he torments all of wayne manor with his awful shower singing and so this is why i going to strongly put him as lead vocals. so for all intents and purposes, this time around, he absolutely slays his vocals EVERYTIME. i reckon he dabbles a bit into guitar but mostly acoustic stuff.

Jason Todd: GUITAR. LEAD GUITAR. HE SHREDS. ADDICTED TO HIS DISTORTION PEDAL.

Barbara Gordon: for babs i’m thinking either vocals or bass guitar. on the vocals side of things you just know her duets with dick would be so gorgeous. regarding bass guitar, i reckon she’s more into funk or jazz bass lines. think vulfpeck style.

Damian Wayne: i think damian is sitting in guitar territory as well. i know he would love coming up with solos and getting to take the spotlight so he can just go ham with crazy runs.

Duke Thomas: some keys representation finally!! an unproblematic instrument for our unproblematic king. keys players are always vibing, play some chords, play some riffs, got it all down. duke is the type of keys player that would be vibing along with the rest of the band but always throws in something a little out of left field to really make it his own.

Harper Row: harper plays the drums. and she wants you to know it. unlike tim, she’s always upfront with her playing. smashes it out, always adding intense fills. you just KNOW that mentioning that she plays the drums gets her so many girls. (yes this is me simping for harper on main, what about it)

Kate Kane: guitarist with the stank face. generally stoic in body language when playing but gets really into the facial expressions. kate kane i love you please never change (other than to play guitar in canon - my dream is kate playing guitar in black canary’s band)

Helena Bertinelli (a loved and appreciated member of the batfam so true): convinced that helena is a bass player. comes up with the most face melting bass riffs and everyone goes wild for them. staying on brand, her bass is purple and at gigs she ALWAYS coordinates her outfit to it.

Luke Fox: from my (sadly) limited knowledge of luke, i want to say rhythm guitar/vocals. like steph but unlike steph at the same time. luke’s more focussed on churning out power chords and giving body to the band rather than steph’s high energy priorities.

Bette Kane: i also don’t know much about bette but i’m going to say that she’s the lead vocalist. she has her own vocal style that makes her unique in the scene. i think in being the frontwoman, she makes herself KNOWN to the audience. mega stage presence and ambitious vocals come from her.

the bat himself, Bruce Wayne: heard nirvana once when he was younger, idolised kurt cobain, learned guitar and tries to emulate kurt’s technique. (all in true battinson style)

Alfred Pennyworth: the manager.

Special Mentions - (aka: are they batfam?? probably not but the gotham is strong)

Harley Quinn: guitar/vocals. so intense and scarily energetic in her performances. where does she get it from??

Poison Ivy: the chilled bassist to contrast harley’s energy. pam always looks so cool, calm, and collected when she’s playing.

Renee Montoya: i have to say she’s a guitarist. i can’t decide whether rhythm or lead but i think she’s the type of guitarist who definitely considers themself more a part of the rhythm section and the body of the band then the icing that is vocals. she’s experimental with her chords and always tries to extend them or play funky ones like diminished or flat fifths. biggest fan of F major sixth chord (she just like me fr).

Jim Gordon: used to play trumpet in a ska band when he was younger. has not picked it up since.

Okay this turned out longer than expected! but it was super fun!! I think i might make a *gasp* part 2 for other dc characters like young justice or the titans. also i might make one for concert band instruments (tapping into my cursed memories from concert band, i play trombone which i love deeply but concert band really is a place of terror).
