Shogun Series Finale 1x10

Wow….

Honestly, I can’t remember the last time I’ve cried this much while watching any singular episode of a show before (that’s if I ever have tbh), and that should be a testament to how ‘perfect’ that series finale was.

I know there will be some people who are upset that we didn’t get to see the Battle of Sekigahara, yet in my opinion, it would’ve been detrimental to have it. Yes, there have been incredible action sequences strung throughout the show, but Shogun was never leading to a climactic battle, instead, it was leading to Mariko finally being able to embrace a purposeful death.

The finale perfectly shows the effect that Mariko’s death had on everyone and everything. The show as a whole perfectly encapsulates Mariko’s line to Blackthorne that “life and death are the same, both can have value and purpose”. Shogun highlights each character’s worth, whether they are living or dead. In the end, it was more impactful to see the magnitude of influence that a handful of lives and deaths could have as opposed to that of a great battle.

The finale also does a brilliant job of reinforcing what we already know, that Toranaga is the master of trickery and deception. The scene where Toranaga tells Yabushige that he already knows the outcome of the war is so gratifying. After episode 9, as viewers, we almost already know the outcome as Mariko’s death seals Toranaga’s victory before the war even really had a chance to begin. While Toranaga finishes answering all of our questions, he leaves us and Yabushing wondering whether or not he was no better than everyone else when it came to power.

Shogun is a masterpiece that deserves all of the praise and recognition it is receiving. The performances, writing, cinematography, effects and music were perfect, everything was perfect. Shogun is a 10/10, and by the time awards season rolls around I do not doubt that it will manage to bag a plethora of awards.

I decided to watch helluva boss and imma do 2 separate posts for seasons 1 and two (why did I write it like that…?)

Season one

God I love this show. The writing is way more my speed than Hazbin hotel on Amazon, I enjoyed the writing in the pilot, but once Amazon took over the humor just didn’t really land for me, and tbh the plot took over and I started focusing more on that, and in general I’m more partial to the rapid fire YouTube dry comedy and this sentence is a friggin mess- I found HB SO FREAKIN FUNNY

Dude when he goes “FUCK, a new hole” I lost it

“Just try and sue us”

“We’re rich and we’re hot”

“I can just buy all the things!”

“You should commit die”

“Hehe, Trumpet!”

These are just my kinda lines, I don’t know how to explain it, I was wheezing all throughout the season

The music OH LORD when I say I’ve listened to stolas’s lullabye, lulu land, cotton candy, and house of ozmodius like 100000 times I’m… exaggerating but like you get the point the music here is friggin fantastic I also really like how a lot of the music is diegetic, I think that’s a fun touch. I don’t remember whether this is the case in Hazbin, but in this one it was like… I don’t know, it made sense that they were singing when they were singing… am I articulating myself well? I don’t care, iykyk if not, no prob

The animation is great, Viv loves them spinny shots and I am here for it. The amount of genuinely amazing action scenes is super impressive, and even the chill scenes have a ton of personality

The voice acting might be what steals the show for me, idrk anyone’s names cept Alex Brightman but BLITZS VA NEEDS AN AWARD, also slight tangent but I don’t know what it is with stolas’s va but he sounds a lot like a bird in the same sense that Gary Oldman sounded a lot like a bird in Kung Fu Panda 2, what is it that casting directors recognize in actors that screams bird?! Because both of these men are just SO BIRD DOES ANYONE GET WHAT I MEAN moving on, Ozzie’s voice was also effing PERFECT it slid silkily over me like… silk butter or smtg it was the perfect lust voice, I loved it. Everyone else was also great, but they were extra great.

It was also just so fun? Like in hazbin there’s very little just… shenanigans to enjoy, nothing wrong with that because it’s not that type of show, whereas this season is jam packed with them. Like I’ve heard that everyone hated episode 4, but like I don’t know I loved it😆 I just found it to be good old fashioned chicanery, and I liked the chaos and stupidity of it, made for some entertaining TV. This story engine is just mad entertaining for me.

I also enjoyed the writing of most of the characters (Millie, Moxxie, Loona, and Octavia still leave a bit to be desired imo, but whatever, they can’t all be winners and there’s nothing wrong with them) Blitz kinda reminds me of a Barney Stinson type character, which I really enjoy, and I also really like how his boss persona kinda infects everything he does while simultaneously being what’s screwing him over, his nature is kinda like a snake swallowing its own tail, which is tragic and beautiful, and Stolas compliments him well by being, not an enabler, but… I don’t know a clever way to say this… Stolas is a wreck in the best way and he just works. He’s short sighted, like extremely so, like how he thinks sleeping with Blitz will fill his emotional void so he does it but it just drives them further apart so it’s like he’s in a hole and in order to get out he’s gonna dig to pile up dirt so he can climb out but he’s an idiot and that’s a stupid idea and I loved his whole arc. Very enjoyable stuff drama.

Kinda random but whoever Viv’s foli artist is also deserves an award, the sound effects in this show are pristine and it’s incredible (yes I’ve seen the scene where the gun sounds go off a few seconds too late, and yeah, mistakes happen, but every bone crunch sounds and other stuff like that being so enunciated in an indie show is extremely impressive)

Anyhoo, very fun, very emotional, nice to look at, very funny, yada yada- altogether great season 1.

Hmmm I don’t see how it’s a love story yet

Staged 1 works well enough on its own but the second season is really essential as a companion piece upping the emotional ante (which is exactly how I feel about Good Omens 1 & 2 lol)

It ends on that meta moment between David and Georgia which I can only assume is to set up for the third season although I dunno if that was planned at the time as well. It’s ambiguous but not distracting if they didn’t make another one

tl; dr: Staged 2 is a unique and excellent addition to Staged 1. The added meta textual layer of the other celebrities breaking down their relationship based on Staged 1 allows for a lot of “hiding behind my hands so embarrassed” moments, but also by pitting them against each other, it reveals their actual love for each other through the bickering. Season 1 on its own is a nice vignette of its time but season 2 with it adds a tension and intimacy that really takes both over the top

Kinda dreading watching Staged 3 since it seems like people overwhelmingly like it less than the other two because of the loss of the Zoom format and constant arguing, but I’m already in this far deep so I’ll stick the landing

I know I just did a little rant about Sooho so let me just talk about Sieun and why he is the way he is (or why I THINK so)

It's pretty obvious his parents neglect him, probably as early as childhood based on that flashback scene. I don't remember which parent said it but one of them most likely did not want to have a child and that outlook can definitely affect the way you raise your kid.

Based on that flashback, they were so unprepared with the thought of Sieun ever getting hurt (he had a broken arm I think?) I get being worried, but that was not worry to me tbh, it was more like they didn't expect raising kids to be so troublesome which is such a ridiculous notion! They get hurt, they get sick and you can't just expect a child to raise themselves no matter how smart or good they are. They need guidance! They need love!

And I don't remember what ep it was but when the dad asked Sieun if he still fell asleep in class or something like that and Sieun responded 'I don't do that anymore'. Idk that made me think that Sieun had like a chronic sleeping thing that he probably managed on his own just so he wouldn't trouble his parents. And the way Sieun at that age, understood how much 'trouble' he seemed to cause his parents, I think that's what started his very 'cold' and 'unfeeling' nature.

And from then on out, Sieun decided not to be a bother to his parents at all. That also made me think...okay, if he didn't want to bother them...then did he want to make them proud of him instead to show that he wasn't gonna be their problem?

And I get it, he's so me lol. Because I try so hard not to be a bother to not just my parents, but honestly any adult authority figure in my life. But the diff is, I kind of strive for that validation whereas Sieun...doesnt seem like he does, or at least not as much as he thought it would. Like what are his goals? Did he even want to go to a big college and be a big time 'something'? I don't even think we learned much about him and his motivations because it's true that he's so studious and gets so many awards and good grades and yes his parents praise him...but Sieun doesn't even look like he wants or cares about those praises anymore.

On the first ep. when he got that award and showed his dad, his dad seemed like he was genuinely proud of him but his reaction was just...😐 perhaps Sieun knows that his purpose in his parents eyes is to generate good grades and be a good kid so he just does that. Like 'ok I've done my purpose, on to the next task' and honestly that's so fucked up.

Anyways, yeah. I feel like he lost any sense of purpose. Maybe back then getting good grades and validation from his parents meant he wasn't being a bother to them and he prolly liked it but after a while, it kind of just burnt him out. Also maybe after his mother left and his dad started being away more often for work, it just didn't seem like it mattered to him but he still keeps going because it's the only thing that will grab his parents' attention. But again, at the same time, idk if he still even wants their attention. He doesn't even want to try anymore

When he was eating with his mom, you could tell the mom was distracted and Sieun must have felt so discouraged because he must have felt like a task to her, like something on her to do list to check off because how easily she pushes aside Sieun's presence and assumes he was done eating. Like she was already standing up, like she was waiting for an interruption. Sure, Sieun never said anything or expressed his needs but only because his parents never tried to understand him in the first place and idk...be an ACTUAL PRESENT ADULT FIGURE IN HIS LIFE!!

Sieun is such a complicated and interesting character and my only wish was for him to snap at his parents at least once. He almost did it with his dad at the hospital but he held back which he shouldn't have!! Yell at them! They deserve it! (hopefully we'll see that in s2)

I never really knew I would be so attached to him. Usually I get drawn towards the Sooho-type (and dont get me wrong, I love him too) but something about Sieun just makes me want to wrap him in a blanket and never let him go and give him the proper love and care and attention he deserves!

MAJOR SPOILERS FOR ALL EPISODES 🚨🚨

- MARY FUCKING VILLIERS 👏👏👏 Julianne absolutely killed it give her all the awards

- Early episodes George i would take a bullet for you

- The plot twist with Somerset confessing love to George came outta nowhere i did NOT see it coming 😅

- I don’t even think it was genuine tbh. The guy almost cut off George’s hands in their first meeting and then he wanna say he loved him since he first saw him?? Most likely scenario is he knew he was fucked and that was his final desperate resort to win George over, either way George fucking him as one final act of pettiness was such a boss move

- Honorary mention to Mary’s new husband

- He actually tried to be supportive and had some great one liners, hope the guy lived a good life

- John Villiers you deserve the world 😭😭

- TONY CURRAN 🙌👏👏

- James throwing a tantrum and getting caught in the curtains took me tf out lmao

- Lady Hatton reading everyone for filth at the dining table had me on the floor QUEEN SHIT

- James and George kissing in a hallway in front of a bunch of staff, Mary and Sandie being an open secret and no one batting an eye, everyone is queer and no one cares. After years of shows making such a huge deal of queer characters seeing it being portrayed so casually as it should be is refreshing as fuck

- I actually felt sorry for Charles tbh that boy needs a good influence and not George

- JUSTICE FOR SANDIE

- Later episodes George got on my nerves so much i swear to GOD the arrogance was insane, Nicholas gave such an amazing performance

- The FINAL SCENE WITH JAMES AND GEORGE HOLY SHIT

- I haven’t read the book for over a year and I remember it implying that George had something to do with James dying but lord almighty i did not think it would happen like THAT

- I felt bad for James tbh. I know he sucked as a father to Charles and was in no way a perfect guy but to be betrayed by the man he loved like that was cold as hell. The look of shock and betrayal in his eyes in that final scene is stuck in my head

- “Christ has his John and I have my George” WE WERE ROBBED OF THIS LINE

- Overall a great show and outstanding performances from all involved 💯

i hope disney lets Graham Hamilton out of his cage when they promote Mando4 which is supposedly going to be all about Din + feature Luke (and others).

the man deserves notice (and tbh, awards) for his spot on acting/performance as Mark Hamill-as-Luke. Plus the tech. That's a three times layered acting job and he pulls it off FLAWLESSLY.

He also looks hella like young Hamill/OG trilogy Luke himself and it would make the idea of "a new Luke" a lot less unpalatable to the audience if we could see the guy putting so much unsung work into it actually talking about his process/getting credit for collaborating with Hamill/Disney/the tech & the interaction he has with the other actors who are his scene partners

i mean the dude did the majority of this scenes in TBOBF (he wasnt in the Mando2 finale) with A FUCKING PUPPET AND THAT'S IT and his acting still came off as a genuinely caring, wise, empathetic, compassionate, uncertain, self-doubting totally Luke - with nuance! that's INCREDIBLE

ngl i understand why g*iman might want to say heaven/god isn't homophobic in the sense that like "oh people love the g*mens 'verse and want to imagine a world without homophobia"; however, i think it's safe to say that, definitely by now, heaven are also bad guys. perhaps god isn't homophobic and fans could maybe take comfort in that, but heaven can be without that reflecting on god and ruining that illusion.

that being said, defensively shutting down an interpretation (coming from the "interpret everything however you want" guy) that makes the story even more meaningful than it already is, especially when focussing on the show's version of the story, which has definitively moved into "love story" territory, is such loser behaviour. you're allowed to tell fans things they don't want to hear, and fans should be allowed to recognise themselves and the things they've been through without being called delusional or wrong or whatever for it.

covering your ass with the sandalphon comment is hilarious too, because yeah, everyone totally thinks about everything but homophobia when they think of sodom and gomorrah. be serious for me for just one second, please!

no one even called him homophobic for the scene's inclusion (because duh, what you write about doesn't 1:1 reflect your values), but tbh, with the way he reacted, well . . . it's not a very good look, i think. saying "hey, this scene reflected homophobia experienced by gay people [in this instance, specifically gay men]" isn't at all the same as saying "you endorse homophobia" — imagine how impossible it'd be to write a story without any ~problematic~ elements — and if you interpreted g*yziraphale's statement as accusatory, you need to take a step back and do some serious reassessment.

(and the tags about "it doesn't even have to be 'boyfriend'! it could've been 'lady friend' or 'bosom friend'"? what? first of all, if only it were that easy to avoid homophobia! sadly [sarcasm], gay people exist. secondly, WHY DIDN'T THEY JUST SAY ONE OF THOSE THINGS THEN? if angels don't have an understanding of gender or sexuality, why didn't they use one of the neutral terms you suggested? and again, if a and c being just friends was enough to spark heaven's anger and if heaven really has no concept of sexuality — let's remember, s1 had their relationship hella ambiguous still, so if some viewers of the show couldn't pick up on anything between the two, you think 'i don't get sex' heaven would? — they should've just said "friend"!)

i hate that i've written an essay because i hate that i'm putting so much time and (emotional) energy into this, but i'm just so sick of gay people being called delusional or "looking too deep" for pointing out where stories parallel their own. also, nice little "actually *you're* the homophobic one for even noticing it!!1!"[1] there. really deserving of a glaad award, sir. (or is that yet another statement i'm not allowed to interpret?)

1 look, i get he could be acting like he's just got the gender version of colour blindness, but he's a grown up. he should know damn well how that line comes across.

i’ve just finished vol 1 of stranger things and i’m gonna rant about my thoughts so:

⚠️SPOILERS FOR STRANGER THINGS��️

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

holy shit it was incredible! the vibe, the plot, the characters, all *chefs kiss* perfection. it was all amazing tbh, but i’m just gonna talk about my personal favourite things from the season.

• ep 4–‘dear billy’:

holy mother of god this episode. this fucking episode. possibly the best stranger things episode ever, if i’m honest. max’s storyline this season was brilliant, dealing with the loss of her abuser/brother, high school, a fading friend group—it was a dark twist for the character, but one that felt gritty in such a natural way. billy didn’t get a redemption arc (thank god) but max still dealt with the loss in a very real, very raw way that felt so genuine—big pat on the back for the duffer brothers there.

this episode, though. we got to see max’s true feelings; her isolation, her grief, her suicidal thoughts and feelings. it was a real exploration of her character that made me love her all the more.

and i can’t not talk about that end scene. holy. fucking. shit. the cinematography, the song choice, the way it swelled as max rose from the ground, the tension, the suspense, the goddamn flashbacks. all of it was just fucking breathtaking. i was crying and shaking the whole time. max’s determination to get back to her family, the way she collapses in lucas’s arms. absolutely the best scene in stranger things history, and one of my favourite scenes of all time in anything ever. chills. every time. and sadie sink deserves all the awards for her performance, i’ll stand by that. icon behaviour.

• the vecna/001 storyline:

this had me gripped from the start. honestly, i was so intrigued the whole time—and it was played out incredibly well.

from the first scene making us think eleven killed those kids, to the big reveal that 001 had been behind it all along, to eleven blasting him into the upside down and creating vecna. phew. was on the edge of my seat from the start.

it also makes sense in a way that’s not too perfect, but just perfect enough. it’s a reason for all previous seasons, a perfect storm. it felt like the stuff of epics, the final enemy, the final battle. mwah, i loved it.

• eddie, steve and dustin:

i loved them this season. best boys 4 life.

we got the steve and dustin best bros dynamic back, plus seeing how much they mean to each other through eddie coming between them. perfection. i love those little doofuses.

and eddie himself was great. brilliant character, comedic and interesting. good job joe quinn.

•lumax:

i’d never really hated or loved this ship before season 4. i mean, it was kinda cute, but i never got all the hype surrounding it. now, i think i do.

their angst this season was just 😤. the way you can so clearly see that they still care for each other, the way they still need each other. lucas being max’s safe haven. max being the one lucas is vulnerable around. amazing, spectacular. it’s clear they love each other, they just need to figure some stuff out first. my second fav ship of the season.

and here we go, my favourite thing from stranger things season 4 vol 1:

• RONANCE!!!!

oh. my. god. these two stole the show for me.

their dynamic was just immaculate the whole way through—from bickering strangers to grudging allies to genuine friendship. it was exactly what i imagined for them and natalia and maya played it so well. their scenes were honestly my favourite. and whilst i love them as friends, i’m a feral ronance shipper—and lemme tell you, i was FED.

firstly, robin tells steve in the video store that she rambles around the girls she likes. cut to robin talking non-stop around nancy in the library. ROBIN I KNOW UR SECRET BABE.

then, we see tammy thompson (finally), who could be a carbon copy of nancy wheeler, from the style down to the heart eyes for steve. SHIT robin, do you have a type—popular pretty girl who falls for the preppy pretty boy? just admit you like nancy already oh my god.

robin’s obsession with having nancy like her?? the fucking lesbianism of it! like, wanting this other girl so desperately to think you’re cool that you end up being so annoying she has to shut you up with mystery and monsters? the gay agenda. needing to be her friend but you don’t know why until—oh shit, that’s why.

the way they just complete each other!!! they bounce off each other so easily, coming up with all the plans and the genius ideas and basically saving the whole group together. the way they play off each other in the asylum, convincing the guy to let them see victor (and holy shit the way nancy looks at robin during her speech). they save max’s life together, and are the only reason the group can save themselves from vecna and i just think that’s neat.

finally, to address the stancy plot line. it’s clear the duffers are trying to make it seem like steve and nancy will get back together, and who knows, maybe they will. but i think (i hope) the duffers are smarter than that.

nancy and steve are the characters who have had the most development over the course of the show. they’ve both grown into themselves, become different and better people. and to have them get back together would completely defeat their respective arcs. i can see them being good friends, but i don’t think they’d realistically work as a couple again.

for one reason, it was made clear in nancy’s vecna vision that her biggest fear, the thing that haunts her most, is that she killed barb, that barb died because she slept with steve. that shit still fucks with 3 years later. and i think she’ll always associate that guilt with him, no matter what. i don’t think she’ll move past that enough to have a healthy relationship with him.

for another, steve clearly doesn’t know what he wants—and i think he needs to figure that out on his own. he’s desperate for love, that’s obvious, and he’s latched onto nancy because she’s his ex who’s showing interest. i think he needs to come into himself a little more before he thinks of trying a relationship.

finally, it’d be pretty cruel of the duffer brothers to have nancy do what she did to steve with jonathan to jonathan with steve. it’d be unoriginal and disappointing, and it wouldn’t really make sense. at least have nancy and jonathan break up officially first, you know?

so no, i don’t think steve and nancy will get back together. and i also think jonathan and nancy will break up when she realises they don’t need each other anymore. they were trauma-bonded, that’s true, but she’s doing well on her own, and they want to take separate paths in life. so that leaves nancy a single pringle.

and who’s right there with her? robin motherfucking buckley.

robin, who annoyed the shit out of her at first, who is frustratingly clever and infuriatingly funny. robin, who saved max’s life, who tried to help nancy, unselfishly, with her love life when they barely even knew each other. robin, who’s become the closest thing she has to a friend since barb.

robin, who i think is gonna save her life.

last time we saw nancy, she was under vecna’s curse. and we all know the only way to break the trance is to play that person’s favourite song. and sure, steve might know it and that’ll be that, but what if he doesn’t? what if he can’t save her?

robin will step in. we saw her routing through nancy’s draws in her room, and we saw her holding some of nancy’s tapes. i don’t think that was a coincidence. i think robin knows nancy’s favourite song and is going to save her life with it.

and boom. just like that, robin stops being the annoying new friend. robin becomes the life-saver, the ally, the rock in the middle of the hurricane. and nancy starts to fall for her.

but what do i know, eh?

i want to make a stupid question but since i want to know and you're fan of him maybe you can answer it?

i saw a gifset of sebastian in a scene of endings beginnings and i noticed the character was literally hard and that made me wonder, was the actor actually hard or they just use something on his boxers to make it look like that? 😭 again i know it's a stupid question but i just genuinely don't know lmaooo, i know he used something like that when filming thong scenes in p&t, production in which he was amazing btw

I don't think that's a stupid question! The boner is kind of noticeable in that scene lol so I get why you'd wonder about it. I don't know for sure, but I think that in this case it's all Sebastian tbh. Endings Beginnings was mostly improvised and they tried to act in a really organic, natural way (they talked about that in interviews), and I think that getting turned on during sex scenes is just a natural reaction of the body that can happen sometimes? In a similar way to how, if they're acting that they're absolutely livid, their hands might start shaking or their face might get red, etc.

I know actors often talk about how shooting sex scenes isn't actually that sexy because they're in a room full of people and cameras watching them which kind of makes it awkward, but I'm sure it's possible to occasionally still get a little turned on, physically. Nothing wrong with that as long as everyone is consenting and treating each other respectfully! Hope that answers your question?

Also, I totally agree that Seb was amazing in Pam and Tommy, he 100% deserved those awards nominations imo 🙌🏻 Such a talented man, our Sebastian 🥰

i get clowning on the ofmd middle aged man kiss (i thought it was ok but i understood the putside fandom reception 😭) but how are people clowning on this this was award deserving acting the buildup the trembling the thing aziraphale did with his mouth that convinced me there was tongue involved the "I lo-" im going insane over here

I thought the OFMD kiss was okay too, I think it’s supposed to be awkward on purpose. It felt realistic. But I understand clowning on it because tbh it’s so awkward that I tend to politely look away 😂

But there’s absolutely no reason to clown on the GO kiss. The acting is fucking phenomenal. I already said this in a separate post, but the acting is SO GOOD that just from this image

People were able to gather that it was a desperate attempt at something, and/or a goodbye of sorts. I saw a theory that Aziraphale had lost his memory like Gabriel, and this was Crowley desperately trying to get him remember. A theory that Crowley was saying goodbye before sacrificing himself for Aziraphale. In general, the theories seemed to be that something bad happens that leads up to this moment. And that’s exactly what happened…and we were figuring that out just from that one still obscured by a word.

I just think that’s really cool. That it’s such an emotional scene that people were able to feel the right sort of vibes just from a still image with zero context.

And then obviously there’s the before and after, which are amazing and make me tear up. It’s such an emotional scene. It’s so, so good.

I think that a lot of people, when looking at kiss scenes, think they’re only good if they’re “sexy” kisses straight out of a romance. I think it could have something to do with many fans of shows involving M/M couples being OSA women (especially straight women, who unlike bi women can’t relate to the characters’ experience of SSA) looking for content to drool over and fetishise, and being annoyed when the content doesn’t allow them to do that. But this is a good scene. I don’t get awkward straight guys out of it at all…I get a sense of heartbreak and desperation, because that’s exactly what it is. It’s Crowley’s last attempt at changing Aziraphale’s mind.

Excuse the ranting and raving, I got this literally right after I finished rewatching episode 6 and my heart hurts.
