"Alexander adores Juan, and like so many fathers who try to relive their lives through their children, he is immensely forgiving for this boy who has fatal character flaws, even though [Juan] believes what he has done…he's done for the family."

I so very rarely cry at fiction but from Tula’s first look in the ending of episode 5 of Burrow’s End I had tears rolling down my cheeks.
There’s something about roleplay I think that makes it a truly incomparable medium for emotion. To roleplay well and really immerse yourself in the game of it all you have to learn to live in your character’s reality. You have to be that character. Because it’s not even like normal method acting where you have the net of the script to catch/trap you, everything that they do every word that comes out of their mouth has to come from YOU. Right then in that moment. and for the trick to work it all has to be true. And that by its very nature inspires empathy and a sort of sublimation of the self to make room for this person and view the world through their eyes. You feel their feelings you experience their grief, their joy. Their catharsis is your own. Good roleplay is making the velveteen rabbit real and it’s one of the most impactful things I’ve ever had the privilege to witness and experience in my life, and God bless actualplay for bringing that to the masses.

"There are moments where [Juan] manipulates other people in a similar the way they’ve been manipulating him. The scene between Jeremy and myself with the dagger is a last ditch frantic attempt at trying to win [Rodrigo] over." Do you think Juan was genuine in the knife scene? Do you think he would have killed himself? "Yeah I think so. He always does what is true inside him...It wasn’t simply about the eventual confrontation, but all about the richness of this twisted family make-up."

How do you personally tell If someone is not a good actor. ?
For me, it's really about how much an actor grounds me in not just the scene, but in the experience and interiority of their character.
There are a lot of different ways actors can do this, and a lot of different acting methods and styles, but I find the emotion that comes through in expression and gesture tends to be the most important to me as a viewer. Good actors can elevate even the silliest of roles if they can find the authenticity of the emotional beat at the core of the scene, which is why you can still get good performances in bad movies or TV shows, and why you can get bad performances in otherwise good ones.
I do think other things come into play too, particularly with the way actors work together, but yes. Feeling rooted in the experience of a character to me is indicative of an actor giving a good performance.

Interesting clip from this interview of Kate Siegel where she talks about what she did as an actor to perform the scream at the end of Midnight Mass Episode 5.

like i am so sorry but with one small expression build really just turned kinn into a fucking supervillain like the realization of this betrayal - that he has been abandoned by the very people he went into hell for...no wonder he starts trauma bonding with vegas. he realizes in this moment that he’s gotta survive this on his own. there will be no extraction mission, no rescue. no help. pete’s gonna do whatever it takes to survive, even if that means switching tactics and trying to forge a bond with vegas and convincing vegas to let him go. pete is suddenly a man with no allies, and that makes him very dangerous. because the only thing that was binding him to the main family was that sense of duty and loyalty, but they abandoned him to the family sociopath. and pete, who does not believe in heroes or villains, will have no problems flipping sides if it means he gets out of this room alive. because he’s been betrayed by the very people he was willing to die for, so he has no reason to die anymore. if his death isn’t gonna mean a damn thing, then he’d rather stay alive.

because i had paused it there and then realized how the lyric was captured with the hopeful look on her face, even her eyes cast upwards. maybe this time, i'll be lucky...i watched this 8 years after it originally aired but it feels like they wrote this scene for me.

this is like her entire character, translated into one scene, into song (reshaping a song from another story for her). twisting her purse in her hands, anxious and wounded and vulnerable, angry in a way she can't name, fearful in a way she can't stop, breaking down into tears and then resolutely still standing, trying to believe in a center of hope. trying over and over again. maybe this time. not a loser anymore, like the last time and the time before. everybody loves a winner, so nobody loved me. lady peaceful, lady happy, that's who i long to be...it’s self-delusion, that desperate, reckless hope. she is always on the crumbling edge of despair. she is always trying to convince herself, and everyone, that it's all going to be good, if she just tries hard enough, just keeps enough control, just does it right. we know she's doomed already, she's a ghost before the story even starts, but then that vivacity tries to trick us any way. she's too much a force of her world to leave it, isn't she? (and she is. even when she's gone in her potential for light, her dark shade remains there). it's just one of the most perfectly crafted scenes for every reason (plus the mr. sandman scene that is the pulse of everything earlier in the episode). all the odds are in my favor, something's bound to begin. it's gotta happen, happen sometime. maybe this time...maybe this time, i'll win. bring me a dream, make him the sweetest that i've ever seen. stars fading, but i linger on, dear. maybe if you believe hard enough, you can make it real. the dream is what folds all around you in the end.
