I'm trying (and failing!) to find a WangXian fix I read years ago on Ao3.

From what I remember, Wei WuXian was a Captive of the Wen and kept in a high tower where is tortured and chained with a small window and Lan Zhan also gets captured and put in the same cell of Wei WuXian.

Lan Zhan is there when the Wen soldiers drag Wei WuXian away for torture and they bond. Later Lan Zhan finds out Wei WuXian is a Phoenix and the Wens want his tears. Wen Qing and Wen Ning are his only friends.

Wei WuXian helps Lan Zhan escape and Lan Zhan has to convince the cultivation world to save Wei WuXian but by the time they reach the Wens, they see that Wei WuXian lost control of the Phoenix and Lan Zhan calms him down amidst the fire.

I also remember the fic mentionimg that a Phoenix meant Goodluck.

8. thank u so much for all u do! i actually have two fics i’m searching for! i remember reading both in 2021 so i believe that narrows things down!

A) first one is canon divergence from qiongqi path, i remember that wwx almost dies but puts his consciousness into a paperman and his body is somewhat preserved by wen qing till they can find a way to heal him and then transfer his consciousness back but they pretend he died to the other sects (i remember they even go check his body) i remember the wen remnants go to lotus pier pretending to be related to ppl from yunmeg and jzx survives. the whole mess with mxy and the summoning array happens but it fucks it up a little since wwx isn’t actually dead and he becomes something like a spirit/ghost for a while and ends up meeting lwj by accident when he’s taming mxy back to lotus pier. they manage to heal his body and he transfers himself back in and they all live happily ever after.

B) the second one is a fic in a fic series of wangxian having more children and being very domestic that includes past lwj changing places with present lwj for a day and he basically spends the day with wwx, they go farming he helps with the kids, they see lsz for a time, unfortunately that’s all i can remember from it.

9. Hello! I am looking for some help to find a fic. It's a story where Wei Wuxian becomes the ruler of afterlife essentially. All the characters who died before him are there but he has no memory of his past. The only way to get his memory was to go to earth and retrieve them(?). Thank you for the suggestion but that is not it, unfortunately. The one I'm looking for starts out with Jiang Yanli and Jin Zixuan being in this after life city. They had to struggle for a bit because there death offerings(?) were delayed. Wen Qing was a doctor in the town and helped heal Jin Zixuan from an injury at one point. The reason everyone's offerings were delayed was because there was a new Ruler, who ended up being Wei Wuxian. He had absolutely no memory of anyone, but allowed Jiang Yanli to visit him. He would hear a song (Wangxian) played as a tribute(?) but didn't know who played it.

10. Help!

I lost a Twitter threadfic! I could have sworn I saved it, but either I accidentally deleted it or the author did. And they were about to update it too!

It was about WWX who, during the first Burial Mounds siege, was transformed into a rabbit, and now lives as an immortal bunny. Now it's modern times and he's been rescued by a reincarnated LWJ, who is about to leave for college (veterinary) and doesn't remember anything about his past life. WWX is wary of him at first (he thinks that LWJ was amongst those who led the siege), but he eventually warms up to him and manages to tell him the truth using a computer.

13. I was reading a great fic and then Tumblr updated and ripped out from me when I was only in chapter two! Devastated. Its world building at its finest, you are not folks directly what's happened or happening. WWX is the proprietor of Yiling Garden, a cafe that offers sanctuary. Mo Xuanyu arrives in the first chapter seeking sanctuary from the Inquisition. Lan Wangji arrives, saying he's sanctuary and there for Mo Xuanyu, but WWX assumed he was inquisition at first. They have not seen each other for years. Clearly something happened to separate WWX from everyone he loves except Wen Ning, who works for the shop too, and had been raised from the dead. For unknown reasons, Wen Qing is elsewhere and happy. Wen Yuan is mentioned, but WWX doesn't know what happened to him. There are phones so it's a modern au. And... That's it. Tumblr died right after Lan Wangji asks WWX out for dinner. Help! Thank you VERY much! @lurkdot

I have a fic finder request - I remember it was a harry potter au where wwx has been gone from lwj's life for 13 years. he came back (as an animagus?) as a black rabbit and lwj was a professor at hogwarts. lwj takes care of rabbit wwx and then jgy comes with aurors at the end of the fic to attack hogwarts and lwj fights him. When lwj is almost going to be killed, rabbit wwx turns back into a human and protects him. Thanks so much!

I seem to have read a summary or a review of a wangxian fic and can't recall if it's from this blog so i am putting in a request for help in finding it so in that summary it was mentioned that wangxian had travelled to a village and met a lady on bank of the sea but she was actually a sea monster/creature don't exactly remember what and she consumes hearts of her victim and LWJ becomes her target but he distracts her by tell her his and WWX's story while WWX tries to save LWJ as the body of the victim comes to shore after a week or so don't remember much or more so I hope this suffices also it was most likely to be a multi chapter fic with less than 10 but more than 3 chapters and that it was probably on ao3 . Okay so what do JGY haters suggest JGY should have done about NMJ after NMJ's numerous and seemingly unstoppable attempts on his life?

Even if they say he should have done nothing and just awaited his death, he did that, too. Twice. NMJ gave up then but attempted to murder him three times after that.

he was in the middle of trying to murder JGY again when his qi deviation kicked in and finished him first. Both in the show and in the book. in the book, JGY gave him even more chances. He only started to play his remix for NMJ when NMJ offended his mother. kicked him down the stairs, and tried to murder him yet again. But the only thing that saved JGY from NMJ in the staircase encounter in the book was LXC arriving. LXC was apparently nowhere near arriving in the show, so JGY would have died there and then had it not been for NMJ's qi deviation kicking in.

and it's not like he could get a restriction order (and let's be real, even if he could, NMJ wouldn't respect the restriction order. He tried to kill the Jin heir in JILINTAI! repercussions mean nothing to him). He would definitely meet NMJ again and in one of those encounters finally LXC wouldn't have been present to interfere and JGY would have been left at the mercy of NMJ alone. even if JGY did kill Xue Yang ( which would result in JGS doing something to JGY in turn) NMJ would find another reason to attempt to kill JGY again (as he canonically did. JGY had promised NMJ that he would bring him XY's head and it had pacified NMJ for the time being. NMJ's last murder attempt happened because he overheard JGY talking behind his back since NMJ had offended JGY's mother and pushed him down a considerable number of stairs).

So what do you suggest he should have done? What would you do in his place?

Actually, I asked that but I know that JGY antis simply don't think about NMJ's multiple attempts on JGY's life and don't think that JGY was in any danger from him in anyway. It's amazing how people choose to wilfully see the negative things done BY JGY without seeing the negative things done TO him that provoked what JGY came to do. Like he's an ungrateful snake who murdered NMJ for ABSOLUTELY NO REASON after all the good NMJ had done for him. (BTW talking about debts and gratefulness JGY saved NMJ's life from WRH. And in the show from WZL, too.) And once I read someone calling JGY a toxic boyfriend for LXC because he told LXC to die with him before he died? my dude...he told him that WHILE BLEEDING TO DEATH ON LXC's SWORD THAT WAS INSIDE HIM TO THE HILT!!! DO YOU NOT SEE THAT?! kindly allow people to be a little bit verbally toxic (while begging for a little bit of affection from their murderer seconds before their imminent death) to their murderer while being murdered before pushing the said murderer out of harm's way. when the said murderer was moments ago again accidentally suffocating them by putting a silencing spell on them while treating their SEVERED HAND and didn't even originally intend to give them a painkiller. (which I previously ranted about here). Murdering NMJ was self-defense. JGY is only considered the bad guy in that situation because it was premeditated murder since he couldn't fight NMJ head-on due to his natural disadvantages compared to NMJ which no amount of training could improve to the point of getting to NMJ's levels. So he had to do it in the area HE was best at. And lastly, he's vilified because as someone else who I can't find rn said before, his one murder attempt, unlike NMJ's many. worked.

Your ChengXuan art is so pretty and gives me life every time I see it! The way you draw JZX especially, he's so spoiled little wifey coded and I love that for him.

thank you ♥♥♥ I believe that with enough time jzx would turn lxc soft, he would be a mom, still raised amongst riches so there'll be eye rolls from his partner here and there but! he'd pamper without putting expectations the way it was done with him :') though genetics would find a way with jin ling where he'd have the same embarrassing confessions the way jzx had and jzx has zero help for that, sorry duckling both jzx and jiang cheng are very dutiful and do everything to not cause chaos, it'd be a breath of fresh air for jiang cheng :'D even though both of them would probably bottle things up cause they're taught to do so and it's a question of time who'd burst first. I always imagined jzx would ironically be the one to "mature up" sooner than jiang cheng but usually that's because of jin ling and just altogether with the way his life took a turn (also having newfound brother jgy now that he wants to make feel included), lot of stuff to soften him up and open up cause they are good and not opening up to it would keep them away. it's always a great struggle how to make chengxuan happen where jin ling is still a thing and so there's usually only few options: 1) xuanli still happened but it was before jzx was true to himself so they're all well but not "together" anymore, jin ling still happened 2) yanli was a surrogate for chengxuan (though somehow i can't see jiang cheng agreeing to raising a child beforehand) 3) yanli had an accident and chengxuan bonded over taking care of baby jin ling and her loss 4) jin ling is jzx's little brother 5) mpreg!jzx 6) jin ling was rescued or found/adopted by coincidence, it'll very much depend on the scenario but it'd be somewhere wher chengxuan are either un-wanted part of bad guys group (criminal empire AUs, pirates, etc) or are the "good guys" (IDK like firefighters or soldiers or cops or something, "good" is in like...it's suppossed to be a good proffession lol) and find him in a dangerous situaiton 7) the story/fic takes place before jin ling and we don't worry about him or there's no jin lings and we're sad

how do you feel about yi city? i don't really go there but i know i've read some meta about how it's like 3zuns and a lot of people compare jgy and xy and was wondering what you thought.

I don't go there either and writing a post deconstructing the idea that there are parallels between Yi City and 3zun could get messy, but I'll make an attempt. Here goes, this got quite long.

As far as I'm aware, fandom when it conflates Yi City and 3zun draws parallels roughly thus:

JGY = XY

LXC = XXC

NMJ = SL

Well there sure are three guys in each group! I mean actually Yi City has four key characters but AQ is a girl and who cares about those right? Right? Fandom, as always I am regarding you disapprovingly over my lorgnette.

Character parallels (or a lack thereof)

XY is hyperviolent and takes excessive revenge for the smallest of slights and takes pleasure in extreme violence and cruelty. JGY endures an onslaught of slights with smiling forbearance, and while he commits acts of extreme violence always does so under duress or in service of a larger goal (though he can certainly enjoy it to a degree). He even outlines his personal philosophy to XY in Villainous Friends, which XY not only rejects but doesn't even fully comprehend.

XXC is an idealist with limited experience of the depths of human cruelty, vulnerable to being preyed on by bad faith actors exploiting said ideals, and when those ideals are shattered he is unable to endure it. LXC's entire deal is that he has a clear understanding of the gap between ideals and reality; witness, he is the one constantly pointing out how few options JGY has and how that informs his actions.

SL is a man of upright morals who wants to break from traditional clan-based practices. When he loses his temper with XXC in a highly emotional context, he subsequently feels deep shame and tries to find him to make amends. NMJ is a moral stickler, but hypocritical and obsessed with the blood-based legacy of his clan. He flies into regular rages which over time escalate to become more and more murderous; he never attempts to make amends for anything he has done during said rages.

Narrative parallels (or a lack thereof)

Again from what I can tell, a proportion of fandom seems to have decided that JGY is some kind of XY lite, hiding behind LXC's skirts and making a diabolical neko face as NMJ points out how evil he is and LXC blithely ignores it. This is then being conflated with XXC being tricked by XY and SL being the one whose arrival at Yi City blows up the status quo.

Except this isn't really accurate to either group.

LXC and NMJ are not partners in ideals or ambition. They each have very different ways of seeing the world and are each responsible for their own clans. They're good friends, but we know that LXC's motivation for suggesting the sworn brotherhood is to improve relations between NMJ and JGY i.e. to protect JGY from NMJ's wrath, and we know NMJ's motive is to regain authority over JGY. There's no indication that they would have entered into a sworn brotherhood with each other if JGY hadn't been present. They're good friends but they're just not a matched pair like XXC and SL.

JGY does not intrude on some cosy scenario and cuckoo his way into LXC's life by means of deception. He saves LXC's life, protects him, gives him the funds to rebuild his clan, and is upfront about who he is and what his parentage is from the beginning. Obviously he keeps secrets from LXC, but he doesn't enter LXC's life under false pretences. I presume people think JGY's use of Turmoil can be compared to XY's use of corpse powder, but there is an ocean of difference between using your friend's house key to steal a piece of paper you need in order to take out your mutual friend who has repeatedly and recently literally tried to kill you and ... literally tricking your friend into murdering a bunch of innocent villagers and laughing about it.

LXC knows a high percentage of what JGY has done and isn't defending him due to ignorance of his actions but due to a sincere belief in their necessity and/or an understanding that JGY's options are limited and he is doing the best he can in the circumstances. This attitude continues in the temple, when he refuses to turn aside from questioning JGY in an effort to reconcile JGY's additional secrets with the man he knows. Meanwhile, during the confrontation between XXC and XY, XXC is steadfast in his rejection of XY's thesis statement and when he succumbs it is to despair rather than to XY's justifications.

Rather than being oblivious to the danger JGY poses, LXC is not fully confronting the fact that NMJ is incredibly dangerous and an ongoing threat to JGY's life; and, for that matter, the lives of others too. Remember NMJ cut down plenty of his own cultivators under his qi deviation, and said qi deviation was merely accelerated rather than created by JGY's playing of Turmoil. SL is no danger to anyone and continues to selflessly travel and do good where he can. He takes ownership of his mistakes and commits to doing penance in the hope that he can ultimately make amends.

It really cannot be overstated how dangerous NMJ is both to JGY and everyone around him. He's a ticking time bomb and that is not remotely comparable to SL, a genuinely upright man who makes a huge mistake and in trying to put it right stumbles into a twisted situation and gets horribly murdered. SL isn't obsessed with the potential for destruction exhibited by a man who is doing his best to navigate an impossible situation because he has to follow his father's awful instructions or be eliminated; he's trying to stop the man who massacred his temple, maimed him, and used his own best friend as a murder weapon for the fun of it.

It's not that XY doesn't have affection for XXC; he clearly does love him in his own way, and XXC is the shizun cum father cum big brother he never had. It's notable that XY stops with the corpse powder after a while and settles into his domestic life with XXC and AQ (remember her). But he very obviously has no understanding of XXC's moral framework, and it's not that he learned better so much as he no longer has a desire to revenge himself on XXC and can't quite bring himself to examine that.

Miscellaneous dynamics (oh no, I'm going to talk about pairings)

Guys, A-Qing is there. She is there, like, she is super there, she is our viewpoint character, she is not some optional add-on. She's crucial to the entire dynamic and whenever I have dipped a toe in Yi City I'm usually frustrated to see that the miraculous plot change that has spared XXC has omitted to spare AQ. Or, if she is spared, she gets relegated to daughter or little sister status while XY is elevated to being one corner of the Songxuexiao triad.

So let's talk about pairings. Here is my position, which I must stress is based on MDZS not CQL.

If there is any significant potential for a romantic read on the relationships between any of these characters, it's solely between XXC and SL. They are completely committed to each other, love each other deeply, and are each the most important person in the other's life. SL is committed to finding XXC to right the wrong he did him, and XXC is so committed to SL that when he thinks he's to blame for the death of SL's surrogate family he literally gifts him his own eyes.

The dynamic between XXC and XY is really more of a familial or mentorly one. XXC is providing guidance and support that XY has never received in his life, and XY is responding as a child experiencing actual care for the first time. He's still not capable of understanding or accepting that his past actions are wrong, but, like a child, he thinks he can sweep them under the rug and go on as though they never happened. It's not that he's learnt better; it's that he doesn't need to commit mass violence any more.

But even if you could make a successful argument for XY's feelings being romantic, and even if you could successfully argue that XXC returns them (a massive stretch), whatever kind of relationship they have is fundamentally unworkable and doomed. Sooner or later, even in a scenario where SL survives, XXC will discover the truth and reject XY utterly. In their final confrontation he is hurt, appalled, trying to understand... but he's not trying to understand so he can find his way back to the XY he thought he knew. He's trying to understand in the way a shell-shocked soldier is trying to understand. He shows no openness to XY's explanations and no indication whatsoever that any reconciliation is possible.

XY doesn't understand this at first, but when he does realise it—that's the moment he reveals the presence of SL's fierce corpse. The moment of no return is years in their past, but XY only grasps this when XXC refuses to accept or engage with the narrative he's created in his own mind about how justified his actions are.

It's very telling that, when XXC is being slammed with revelations, the moment that finally breaks him is when he finds out that SL is dead by his own hand. And, to loop back round to dismantling false parallels between Yi City and 3zun, this should really be compared to LXC's reaction to his minor role in NMJ's death. He's appalled in the moment, but it doesn't even come up during the temple discussions and he's constantly seeking explanations and accepting the logic of many of JGY's responses.

Really, no one seems interesting.

Then a familiar face pops on her screen and they are both surprised. "Isn't that nhs brother/lxc friends?" They both comment at the same time, looking more closely at the profile.

Jc has to admit, nmj is really handsome and well, his description wouldn't have caught her eyes normally, but already knowing him make her swipes right. They keep looking at profiles and messaging those who already matched jc (nothing really impressive tbh) until a notification tells them nmj matched with jc.

Jc is pretty happy and excited about it if she has to be honest and the chatting goes pretty well. They have a couple of things in common, have similar tastes and jc really enjoys talking with him.

It doesn't take long before they settle on a first date (and of course wwx helped pick up a cute outfit with the help of jl). The date goes well and others quickly follow up, often messaging each other in the day. Officially dating comes after a while of flirting and meeting up.

As the relationship starts to be serious, jc starts to be a bit nervous.

They never went farther than cuddling, kissing and making out a bit and nmj clearly doesn't know she's trans.

Jl and wwx enter in protective mode because they /won't/ allow anyone to hurt jc again. Jl absolutely loves his aunt and she deserves the best and he won't ever let anyone hurt her now that he is a bit older. He cannot understand how anyone could see jc as bad for who she is.

On the other hand, wwx has been by jc side since she came out to him as trans and never let her down even when shit went really messy and hard. He is happy to see her doing so well now and being happy, he won't let any other jackass break her heart.

But they also both know jc cannot exactly keep this a secret from nmj forever.

So jc invite him over because she want to talk about something important (while jl and wwx are here, they both refused to let them alone, jc is secretly relieved about that stubbornness of them). Nmj is worried something might have happened but doesn't force her to tell him, instead coming over to hear what is the important thing she has to say.

when he get there, jc pushes wwx and jl to another room, not wanting for their presence to make nmj nervous (but close enough to hear and be ready to come if the worst outcome were to happen).

she makes some tea to calm her nerve, finally sitting down with nmj at the kitchen table. she doesn't say anything at first, searching how to say it, ending up with going for straightforward (nmj prefers straightforwardness and she doesn't want to dance around the subject).

"So, there's something I haven't told you yet, but feel would be important to tell you if we continue with this relationship" jc starts, hand fiddling with the handle of her cup, "I didn't want you to discover from someone else or by accident, so I wanted to tell you myself before things get farther".

at this point, nmj is a bit confused as to what could be so important to tell him that could make him want to /break up/ with jc. He offers a small smile, hoping it can reassure her as she gathers her courage.

"I... am trans" jc finally says.

she wants to have more, but the lack of actual reaction makes her nervous and tense up, fiddling more with the teacup. "I-I get it if you don't want to stay with me, am used to it don't worry you can just tell me, at least it will hurt les-" she starts to ramble nervously before jumping as a hand grabbed hers gently.

jc then looks up to meet nmj eyes, the man smiles softly at her with no hint of disappointment and disgust, just reassurance and love.

"I won't leave you simply because you are who you are" he assures her first, "I love the jc I met and you being trans won't change it, I will be there to support you too".

jc finally manages to calm down, laughing a bit she tears up, happy that nmj isn't like her exes and is clearly more than fine with her being trans. she lets him pull her into strong and reassuring arms, letting herself fully calm down from this subject that had made her more stressed than usual.

jl and wwx eventually come out from their hiding, which does make nmj a bit curious because he didn't expect for them to be hidden (maybe not jl since he lives here, but wwx yes).

jc mentioned they wouldn't let her stay in the apartment alone because of bad past experiences (tho she doesn't go much on those past experiences and nmj doesn't push her to do so).

They end up talking a bit more, nmj wanting to know what were things he shouldn't do or say to make her uncomfortable if she ever needs his help for anything trans-related. jc is a bit curious as to why he seems so used to it and nmj admits that his brother is also trans.

"Wait, he is?" wwx asks surprised

nmj I suddenly a bit nervous that he might have outed his brother (he saw nhs often talking about it with other friends, so he assumed he had told them).

after a call to his brother nmj is reassured to hear nhs is alright with it (he thought he had told them actually and is surprised neither of them really caught onto it).

so everything is fine, jc gets a nice and supportive boyfriend and everyone is happy (tho it doesn't stop wwx and jl from testing nmj like before to make sure he won't break jc hearts too).

I dunno why, but I want nhs and jc to have self-care nights (nhs suggestion after seeing jc so stressed) and they talk about anything and sometimes trans thing while nmj is just sitting next to them, helping out with whatever they are doing while being a bit confused as to what they are talking about (but it's fine, he also learn more like this).

I just wanted trans lady jc to have a good boyfriend and now she has, no one can ever hurt her with a little protection squad (which now also includes lxc and jgy because they ain't gonna let anyone hurt their friend's girlfriend)

ep50 (1/4): endings, partings and reunions

ough we made it. okay first of all it is my professional (ha) opinion that this series has better impact if watched within a span of ~2 months and not 7-8 months. really allows the emotional payoff to be that much fresher in the mind. next time I rewatch, I'm going to have to set aside solid chunks of time and then really commit to not liveblogging. last time I only liveblogged text reactions, which did cut down on time. but it might be impossible to refrain. it's just more fun this way!

ok so like we going into the intricacies of these three motherfuckers and why shipping them in certain ways is a little fucked/fundamentally misunderstands their character(s)/etc.

CW for discussions of a bit of a variety of abuse

NMJ - Nie Mingjue LXC - Lan Xichen JGY/MY - Jin Guangyao/Meng Yao

So: run down for those who may not know these characters and what they're about.

All together, the three are known as the Venerated Triad. The three all played major roles during the Sunshot Campaign-- a war of the Jin, Jiang, Nie, and Lan Sects against the Wen Sect, who was trying to take over all sects --with Nie Mingjue/Chifeng Zun (one in the middle) known for leading the Campaign, Lan Xichen/Zewu Jun (one on the left) Also leading on top of protecting ancient Lan books when the Lan Sect had basically fallen, and Jin Guangyao/Lianfan Zun (one on the right) infiltrating the Wen Sect and sending battle plans to Lan Xichen, which ultimately helped them take down the Wens.

After the Sunshot Campaign ended, the three swore Brotherhood, which is like, really complicated to explain, but in most books in this genre, it can be gay.

So like why is it bad to ship all three if they did one of the gay rituals. Well.

Jin Guangyao initially joined the Nie Sect, then known as Meng Yao, as a form of servant. He was known as the bastard son of Jin Guangshan (the Jin Sect leader), whose mother was a sex worker, and was raised poor despite having the blood of arguably the richest man in the cultivation world. He was bullied to actual hell wherever he went, until it was brought to the attention of Nie Mingjue-- the Nie Sect leader. NMJ defended him, and pretty quickly promotes him to be the second in command of his army, especially after seeing how skilled MY was in this subject. He basically becomes an advisor alongside NMJ, became friends with Nie Huaisang-- NMJ's little brother --and was very well trusted by NMJ. But, despite now having a higher position within the sect, MY was still ridiculed by the General, and quite harshly at that, literally just because his mom was a sex worker. For the drama I guess, MY just DOESN'T tell NMJ about this.

Later on, a mass-murderer named Xue Yang would come to be held in the jail of the Nie Sect. Without anyone else's knowledge, the two were already colluding, as at some point MY was colluding with the Wen Sect? This shit is so confusing on timeline when it comes to CQL it's kind of insane, but anyways, MY already knew Xue Yang, and after a few days of him being held in the jail, Xue Yang miraculously escapes as the Wen Sect very suddenly attacks the Nies.

While this is happening, MY very deliberately kills the General of the Nie Sect RIGHT in front of NMJ. Like NMJ saw the whole thing. But he still has the gal to be like XUE YANG KILLED HIM!!!! XUE YANG KILLED HIM DA-GE PWEAAASSEEE!!!!!!! but they don't really get to dwell on that because someone else tries to attack NMJ-- to which MY saves him by taking the stab in the stomach for him.

Once they manage to get the Wens off their ass, NMJ has MY come to the little Nie meeting room, and is basically like (through tears) WHY WOULD YOU DO THAT MAN. Because again, NMJ trusted MY a lot. MY was, at that time, probably his most trusted guy in the whole sect that wasn't his baby brother, and now he's murdered his general and let an actual insane criminal loose. While NMJ claims the only reason he won't kill MY is because MY saved him during the battle, there is a lot of underlying care that he has for MY, so he just exiles him and boots him out of the Nie Sect.

"why can't that be gay" to me its a very surface level take to just ship them off of this. have some nuance. we'll look into these characters more intimately later.

Now. From here. MY would join the Wen Sect as Wen Rouhan's advisor. And he's REALLY playing up the part-- because at this time, it seems most likely that the Wens will win the war-- so MY would have a high ranking govt. position in the ruling sect. But. Wrenches are thrown into the plan, and eventually, MY realizes that he needs to have an escape route for whenever the Wens tip over, and they're no longer on top.

This is where Lan Xichen comes into play.

At the time, the Lan Sect had been viciously attacked by the Wens, where the vast majority of its people were eliminated, and the Cloud Recesses/where the Lans live had been destroyed. Lan Qiren, Lan Xichen's uncle, instructed LXC to take the ancient texts from the hidden Library of the Lan Sect, and to run. Because, if everyone else did get killed, at least the ancient texts and the Lan Sect Leader would still be alive. And very begrudgingly, LXC does. While running away, MY would save LXC and provide him somewhere to stay-- which gives MY the out that he needs. He gains the trust of at least one of the leaders of the opposing Sects, and because it was trust gained out of mercy, it was something that he could easily use against LXC should it ever come to that.

Over time MY gains more and more of LXC's trust by sending him copies of the Wen battle plans, giving him intel about the Wens, etc. etc.. And as more and more of it proves to be right, the more LXC trusts MY-- even though he had previously betrayed NMJ in a major way. Because NMJ is still pretty pissed/sad about what happened. Though, LXC doesn't tell NMJ that MY is the intel because he knows it would piss him off.

etc etc etc time goes on, the Sunshot Campaign comes to an end with the Wen Sect going under, and MY is revealed to be the intel that saved the other sects. MY goes to the Jin Sect, getting the name Jin Guangyao (which is a whole other post I could go off about (tho in defense of JGY LMFAOO)), along with the title Lianfang Zun. Again, he's basically an advisor guy, except this time it's under his dad who fucking hates him to death.

This is when the three, LXC, NMJ, and JGY, swear brotherhood. And again this may not seem so bad for a ship, but this is a very heavily summarized thing. Let's get into JGY's craving for power.

No matter what context you put JGY in, he will want power. It's a matter of proving himself to a father who doesn't care about him, proving himself to those who ridicule him for having such a "lowly birth", all that-- he's a viciously insecure man. When he was with the Nies, he had a high rank. He was cared for and adored by the ruling family of the sect-- but the Nies weren't the wealthiest or most influential sect. The Nies weren't a small sect by any means, but they weren't the Wens-- who were able to overthrow an entire sect over night, and initially get away with it because the other Sects were too scared to challenge them. And when the Wens were going under, the Jin Sect was once again the most prominent sect-- even if it was NMJ who was leading the whole campaign.

This craving for power was something that NMJ had noticed and would quickly come to oppose, but as he was slowly succumbing to his way of cultivation, people weren't so ready to believe him. He was "irrational and violent", a stark contrast to JGY who seemed to make himself at home with his new position in the Jin Sect. And eventually, NMJ would start to shut his mouth on the matter, especially when not even Lan Xichen would fully listen to him-- and he had a deep amount of trust in LXC. He would start to comply to keep the peace, which meant swearing brotherhood to a man that betrayed him, and letting that man back into his home.

These trips JGY made back to the Nie sect was mostly to perform what I believe was called "Tranquility" for NMJ. The saber spirits that the Nies cultivate are self destructive for its user, which was why NMJ's health overall was starting to decline. He would have outbursts of rage, his mental state was skewed, all that. And Tranquility was meant to help sooth his Qi in hopes of postponing the inevitable-- there wasn't a single Nie Sect leader that lived a full life while cultivating saber spirits.

BUT! BC JGY WAS MAD AT NMJ! JGY altered the score of tranquility in such a subtle way that not even LXC would notice for like, 16 years, and did it in a way that it worsened NMJ's health. So like. For over the course of what. Six Months. JGY was slowly poisoning NMJ through these visits-- and as of canon for Fatal Journey (The Nie Spin off Movie), taught Huaisang this distorted score, which lead to NMJ murdering members of his own sect in a fit of uncontrolled rage. Literally only LXC was playing the right version of Tranquility for NMJ, but he wasn't the one able to make the most visits as he lived the furthest away from Qinghe/the Nie Sect.

But yeah um. NMJs fucked up state lead to the best scene (NMJ kicking JGY down a whole flight of stairs) and the worst scene (NMJ fucking self imploding). He dies because of all this thoguh. Yeah.

I can't deny that Xiyao aka LXC/JGY was like......... a Thing. Ok. But the thing people fail to realize is that Xiyao is an abusive relationship through and through, because JGY only used it as a way to have power. And the thing that trips people up about this is because JGY is human. He's comically evil in every other instance except for his relationship with LXC, which is why people think it was earnest, and that they just didn't get their happy ending because of things JGY did "in the past".

And I won't deny that JGY did have some underlying care for LXC-- because abusers don't ever want to believe that they're doing something bad. He believes he's doing what he's doing for his own sake, that he's in the right because if LXC doesn't have trust in him, then who will? LXC is an influential figure still, even if it's the Jin Sect that's on top. And LXC is the only person who stands up for him regularly within the four major sects.

Xiyao in a plot related setting makes sense. It was a survival tool for JGY. LXC was a gay man who was very vulnerable during the war. His father was killed, his sect was on the brink of total elimination much like the Jiangs, the survival of ancient history was on his shoulders so he needed to survive-- and JGY provided that link. He was LXC's shoulder to cry on, someone he could trust with personal secrets, and while there may have been a genuine connection from JGY as well-- his whole intention with the relationship was to gain power. While LXC may have indulged in sharing secrets, JGY probably never did. Considering he kept the whole music score and murdering their sworn brother a secret.

You can even see how JGY functions relationship wise in maintaining a certain image in how he treats the whole situation with Qin Su-- his wife and um. Half Sister. He love bombs to hell, and when it doesn't work he gets angry and lashes out. I don't think he would have needed to be as unrestricted to LXC as he was Qin Su, because LXC very much............ Has Issues. And I don't think it's helped because his mother was locked up by his father in a cottage for years on end in total isolation. LXC has NOOO basis of a healthy relationship, so I'm sure he accepted what JGY presented at face value. Which is why I think it was so easy for JGY to maintain those lies for literally 16 years.

JGY took advantage of skills taught to him by LXC to murder NMJ. He took advantage of LXC's favor to put him in a good light to the cultivation world, and he was able to get in to the Jin sect with LXC's encouragement. LXC is the literal pillar to JGY's success, and if that pillar falls, he has nothing to back him up.

Sure, he might have Su She, a dedicated follower who did a lot of his dirty work-- but Su She was despised even by LXC. He might have had Xue Yang to fall on for even filthier shit, but Xue Yang was a notorious mass murderer who eliminated a minor clan just because he felt like it. LXC was the ONE guy who he could rely on wholeheartedly to keep his reputation in tact. Which is why he begins to act so irrationally when he sees that he's losing LXC during the Guanyin Temple scene-- which is where JGY dies. AND GET THIS! GET THIS!

JGY DELIBERATELY. PULLS LXC INTO THE COLLAPSING TEMPLE WITH HIM, BEGGING HIM TO FALL WITH HIM-- BUT OH, OH LAST MINUTE HE PUSHES LXC AWAY FROM THE RUIN TO SAVE HIM ONE LAST TIME. SOMETHING THAT WILL STAY ON LXCS CONSCIENCE FOR THE REST OF HIS LIFE!

their relationship is BUILT on JGY doing something good for LXC in order to make LXC feel like he owes him. I'm sure over the 16 years there were MANY positive events from JGY that LXC clings onto, but JGY still killed NMJ. He still killed Jin Guangshan, and pushed Qin Su into killing herself. He forced prostitutes into continuing to have sex with JGS even as the man was dying, he killed his own son with Qin Su after finding out they were related, and wiped out a minor sect after blaming them for the death of his son. He falsely accused Mo Xuanyu of sexually harassing Qin Su (or himself if u go off of the novel), and exiled MXY because he just didn't like him. All that! All that under LXCs nose.

so I just. I CAN'T take it when people say oh, i love 3zun because they make each other worse. NMJ and LXC TRIED to make things right between all three of them, and JGY couldn't settle for that. It's two victims and a murderer/abuser. Even when NMJ was still hurt by JGY's betrayal, he would ask LXC how he was doing in the Jin sect. He WANTED things to be better even if he knew things were getting worse, and he bowed his head out of respect for LXC, which would lead to his early death.

When you say shit like oh they make each other worse, I feel like that should only apply to characters who are mutually destructive. LXC was a victim of abuse. NMJ may have argued and fought back, but he was a victim of petty grudges. In an ideal world, NMJ would've been completely content with straightening things out and understanding the circumstances-- but the circumstances here were viciously damning, and JGY only made it worse.

and again like. LXC was a peacemaker. He didn't like that NMJ and JGY hated each other, even if they would be visibly pleasant to one another, he wanted them to go back to the way it had been before the Sunshot Campaign-- which is why I think he proposed the Sworn Brotherhood. But I don't think he knew every single intricacy that lead to the downfall between those two-- a simple solution like that wouldn't work.

And as I mentioned earlier on NMJ's and JGY's relationship to each other being surface level if you shipped them-- this may just be my own interpretation of NMJ, but I very much believe he saw JGY as another little brother. So, on the same level as Nie Huaisang-- who he cares very deeply for. JGY and NHS were around the same age (iirc jgy only a few years older, but not in NMJs age group), the two got along with each other greatly, and i believe both shared similar interests. So. I think the dynamic of NMJ holding JGY to the same standard as NHS is a lot more interesting and takes more things into account. Not every relationship between not-blood-related men needs to be romantic. lmfao. It also just makes the betrayal and how NMJ receives it a lot more personal to me.

These three have such an interesting dynamic to me that can absolutely be explored. Again I won't say that Xiyao is made out of nothing-- there's elements there, but to make them into a cutesy little pair is a vicious disservice to JGY's character, because you can't separate him from his manipulative nature. It's a core part of his character whether you like it or not, taking it away just takes away JGY's appeal. On top of that, shipping them for the abuse aspect is like..................... lmao. It's not mutually destructive. you're weird.

💐 Who tends to worry the most?

I feel like their both worriers but in different ways. NHS is the open worrier - every little thing will set him off and be the end of the world (sure some of the dramatics are Headshaker-related, but he really does worry too!)

Lan Xichen is more the type to worry less overall, but really worry about the things that do affect him. And unlike NHS who copes by making his problems everyone's problems, LXC is quiet about it. NHS can usually tell though.

🌺 Do they go to sleep at the same time as each other?

Lan Xichen goes to bed at 9 on the dot like a good Lan. NHS goes to sleep when he goes to sleep though he isn't that bad about staying up late. He likes his beauty rest.

🌼 How do their personalities complement each other?

Here we go......

One common thing I like in OTPs is a dynamic of a serious one and a flighty one BUT with the serious one also being an idealist, while the flighty one will get things done.

I also like the contrast of LXC as the perfect role model of the cultivation world, but also someone who is placed on a pedestal, doesn't have many people he can be close with, and with a mountain of expectations and people watching his every move. Meanwhile NHS is... NHS. He's weak, he's silly, he's also struggling with expectations, but he's also a nice sociable guy who's easy to get along with and befriend, and I think his brand of silliness is something that would make LXC relax, but LXC's encouragement also inspires him to make an effort.

I just think they fit really nicely together.

🌹 Who is the hopeless romantic?

Lan Xichen! He has a very romantic view of love from plays and literature, and enjoys spoiling NHS with sweeping romantic gestures (or what he considers to be sweeping romantic gestures). NHS returns the favor although his own views are a little more practical.

Favorite character: Jiang Cheng i have talked about him a million times but i still find it funny how i didn't really like him at first. the donghua version of him felt like a total ass, and as the donghua lacked the ending back then and didn’t give me closure, only during the live action i grew fond of him. he has made his fair share of mistakes but i love how flawed he is and how much his character promises hope of growth ♥

Least Favorite character: Jin Guangshan bitch ass man can go burn in hell for all i care

An unpopular opinion: uuuhh idk if i have any. it truly has been too long. i cannot get into details, am sorry. 

My Canon OTP: WangXian they are the epitome of true love, of soulmates, of star-crossed lovers, of everything that is good in this dark world. they have all the tropes in them i love. they are both such strong and independent ppl but find gentleness, warmth, and easiness in each other. they make a home. they have defeated death, and if that isn't enough, then idk what to tell you. 

My Non-canon OTP: XiCheng they are two ppl attempting to heal together. they are fire and ice, storm and calm, winter and summer. they meet between the river and the mountain. but i think what mostly attracted me to them was the promise of hope and healing and finding love when it had once been lost. 

Most Badass Character: Lan Wangji only based on how he looks when he fights like. hell. that looks stunning?? he was born to wield a sword i swear (honorary mention goes to his husband yiling patriarch bc will we ever get over those wonderful vibes? never)

Most Epic Villain: Nie Huaisang our master mind ♥ he and his intelligence astonish me. he's just so cool. idk if we can properly count him as a villain bc who truly is a villain in cql (other than like. wen ruohan?? who just got cringe with his emo villain aesthetic byeee) but he is our Big Bad Guy in the end. he is a villain - yet also some type of hero. and doesn't that just make him even more epic?

Pairing I am not a fan of: ChengYi there are actually several similar ships (like wwx and wn or lxc and nmj etc.) that i find kind of... weird? or where i can only see friendship or familiarity/family bonds instead of romantic feelings. but everyone can like what they like. more for you. (also chengyi bothers me when on twt i go through cheng yi’s (the actor) tag and suddenly i get jc x ljy porn thrown at my face like,,, god dammit)

Character I feel the writers screwed up (in one way or another): The Women i guess we all will die on the hill that cql women deserved better.

Favourite Friendship: Wei Wuxian and Wen Qing i love their bickering and their care for each other and their companionship. i also love how wq is the only person on this earth who can put wwx in his place. that man needs to hear the cold truth sometimes which is that he's an idiot. the smartest idiot in the world mayhaps but an idiot nonetheless. also imagine if they had both been allowed to live, they could've ruled the world sigh. we support powerful besties in this house.

Character I most identify with: Jiang Cheng under the anger and him being a bitch, i do find similarities between us. we have insecurities that cripple us at times; we regard love and family most of all in complicated ways. we don't know what to say to those we care about and struggle with emotions. we suck at accepting gifts too, even if his case is a bit more extreme than my average gift received from a friend :'D

Character I wish I could be: Jin Ling i adore this tiny brat even if he is, indeed, a brat ♥ but imagine how cool it would be, all responsibilities aside, to be him: you are the nephew of half the notorious ppl of the cultivator world. any time you have a problem, you just call one uncle for help. you also have a lot of dead uncles and you're an orphan bc of some of them but :) let's ignore that pain. you would be the coolest amongst your peers. absolutely bonkers.

Beetober 2021 Day 21 - Red

Jiang Cheng knows that something happened the moment he comes home, because Nie Mingjue is waiting for him in the hallway.

There’s a split second where Jiang Cheng fears that something bad happened—someone got hurt or something similar—but Nie Mingjue is excited-agitated and not worried-agitated, so Jiang Cheng relaxes again.

“What’s going on, my soul?” Jiang Cheng asks and smiles into the kiss Nie Mingjue pulls him into.

“Hi,” Nie Mingjue whispers when they part, and he seems a little bit more relaxed already.

So he didn’t speak with anyone about what has him so excited yet, Jiang Cheng thinks.

“Wanna tell me what has you this agitated?” Jiang Cheng asks as he toes off his shoes and Nie Mingjue huffs.

“Why do you always know?”

“Maybe because you’re like an eager puppy, waiting for me to come home, so you can share the news?” Jiang Cheng shoots back, and he grins at Nie Mingjue. “It’s very cute.”

“You’re cute,” Nie Mingjue grumbles and if he thinks it’s a good comeback, then he’s wrong.

It’s adorable and nothing more.

But still, Nie Mingjue is not talking so Jiang Cheng raises an expectant eyebrow at him.

“Xichen wrote me,” Nie Mingjue finally reveals and now the other eyebrow joins the first.

“Did he now?” Jiang Cheng asks, and he’s cautious.

Nie Mingjue might be happy about that, but he’s always a little bit blinded when it comes to Lan Xichen and Jiang Cheng already had to witness one fall out between them. He’s not keen to do it a second time.

“Yes. I know you’re—well, whatever it is you are, but look,” Nie Mingjue says and almost shoves his phone in Jiang Cheng’s face.

He grumbles as he takes it out of Nie Mingjue’s hand, but it’s cute how excited he is about this and Jiang Cheng prays to all the gods that Lan Xichen is not going to fuck this up again.

The phone is unlocked already and showing Lan Xichen’s most recent message and Jiang Cheng wonders just how often Nie Mingjue already read it.

Hello, Mingjue, it says. I’m sorry how our last meeting went. I wish to talk, and I would love to see the new apartment you moved into, if you would be open for that. Just let me know.

It’s—something, alright, Jiang Cheng thinks, and he’s especially unhappy with how Lan Xichen is not even explicitly apologizing for their last fight. And no mention of the fact that he blocked Nie Mingjue for almost two months, either.

“You didn’t answer yet,” Jiang Cheng says with a frown, because he expected Nie Mingjue to enthusiastically agree the moment he reached the last word.

“You have to agree, too,” Nie Mingjue gives back and plucks the phone out of his hands. “It’s your home, too. If you don’t want him here then I won’t invite him.”

“Oh, you idiot,” Jiang Cheng sighs and leans up for a kiss. “Of course he can come. As long as he behaves.”

Jiang Cheng hates how Lan Xichen took Jin Guangyao’s side the last time he spoke with Nie Mingjue, how he always implied that Nie Mingjue understands everything Jin Guangyao says wrong, how he should try to see it from his perspective as well.

Lan Xichen never cared to see it from Nie Mingjue’s perspective and Jiang Cheng is still very angry with him for that, especially since he saw first hand how it almost broke Nie Mingjue.

But he’ll not stand between them if Lan Xichen is really trying to do better.

“Thank you,” Nie Mingjue breathes out and immediately types out a reply.

It doesn’t take long for Lan Xichen to answer and when Nie Mingjue looks at him with a huge smile on his face, he knows that he accepted whatever date Nie Mingjue proposed.

Jiang Cheng just hopes that it will go as well as Nie Mingjue clearly wants it to.

Jiang Cheng is a little bit stand-offish when Lan Xichen arrives for afternoon tea a few days later, he can’t deny that, but Lan Xichen behaves as if nothing at all is wrong, as if he didn’t block Nie Mingjue for two months, as if they didn’t part with a fight last time.

He’s not sure if he likes it, but he will not comment on it right now. He will get to rant to Nie Huaisang later, depending on how this goes; for now, he’s the perfect host.

Jiang Cheng keeps himself in the background, wanting to give Nie Mingjue and Lan Xichen time to overcome whatever awkwardness they are dealing with right now. It doesn’t seem like Lan Xichen feels much of that on his side, but Nie Mingjue moves his hand in a nervous gesture, a tick he developed when he’s truly nervous and unsure and Jiang Cheng wants to do nothing more than to hold his hand.

Instead he pours all of them tea and then pretends to not notice the awkward silence that settles over the table.

“It’s white tea, that’s still your favourite, right?” Jiang Cheng asks as he puts the tea pot down and Lan Xichen jerks with the question.

“Yeah, sure,” he gives back, reaching for the cup and almost burning his tongue when he immediately takes a sip.

“It’s good to see you, Xichen,” Nie Mingjue whispers, closing his hand around his own cup and Lan Xichen drags up a smile.

“It’s good to see you, too, Mingjue. Your new apartment is beautiful.”

“Thank you,” Nie Mingjue gives back and Jiang Cheng wants to scream, it’s all so painfully polite.

They are best friends—or at least used to be—and it shouldn’t be like this.

They continue with the meaningless small-talk over their tea and Jiang Cheng has to force himself not to simply address the elephant in the room. This is Nie Mingjue’s and Lan Xichen’s thing and he doesn’t have the right to interfere with it.

If they want to go back to being friends like before, they have to figure it out for themselves.

“Listen, Mingjue,” Lan Xichen finally says as he puts his now empty cup down, “about that last meeting.”

Jiang Cheng sees Nie Mingjue tense but he’s glad that someone finally brought it up.

“I’m sorry I yelled at you,” Nie Mingjue rushes out and he means it, too, Jiang Cheng knows that.

Nie Mingjue is quick to anger, his temper always flaring because of the most inconsequential things, and his fight with Lan Xichen was by now means inconsequential, but he always feels bad about it afterwards.

He’s been working on it with a therapist, but it’s not going that well, Jiang Cheng knows, which just frustrates Nie Mingjue more.

“That’s—okay,” Lan Xichen says with a wince, and even Jiang Cheng can tell that it’s clearly not okay for him and he has to watch as Nie Mingjue’s face falls.

“I really am sorry,” he reiterates and Lan Xichen looks to the side.

“But are you sorry about how you treated A-Yao as well?” Lan Xichen whispers and Jiang Cheng’s eyes snap to Nie Mingjue to gauge his reaction.

“I’m—no,” Nie Mingjue honestly gives back, squaring his shoulders. “He betrayed me; I trusted him and he misused that trust. I’m not sorry I yelled at him, or broke off contact with him. There’s nothing I have to feel sorry for. He hurt me first.”

Jiang Cheng is insanely proud of Nie Mingjue for stating it that clearly, but Lan Xichen only frowns at his words.

“Mingjue, you have to see it from his perspective as well,” he starts and where Nie Mingjue before held himself upright he now slumps over.

His hand is opening and closing around nothing and Jiang Cheng can see how distressed he is that his best friend is yet again not on his side and Jiang Cheng simply sees red.

“That’s enough,” he snaps out, slamming his hand onto the table, making Lan Xichen flinch.

“Wanyin,” Nie Mingjue starts but Jiang Cheng cuts him off with a gesture.

“No. No!” He fixes Lan Xichen with a glare. “You’re so goddamn eager to make everyone understand Jin Guangyao’s perspective and yet you don’t even care about Mingjue’s! He doesn’t need to see it from his perspective; you have to see it from both their perspectives at least. But you don’t even stop to acknowledge that Mingjue got hurt, and I don’t just mean emotionally. He got physically hurt and yet here you are, preaching to him how he has to understand the one who hurt him. Why can’t you understand Mingjue for a change?” Jiang Cheng demands to know.

“It’s not that easy,” Lan Xichen whispers. “A-Yao got hurt as well.”

Jiang Cheng snorts at that, because from what he remembers, Jin Guangyao got to walk away unscathed while Nie Mingjue had to stay in the hospital for a few days.

“Well, he brought it unto himself if he’s emotionally hurt. Mingjue on the other hand did nothing wrong!”

“That’s not true,” Lan Xichen gives back, making Nie Mingjue flinch and Jiang Cheng fixes him with an icy glare.

“Tell me, Lan Xichen, are you thinking with your brain or your dick?” he wants to know. “Because I think it might be purely your dick speaking right now. Did the lithe, nimble body get to you that much that you’re disregarding years of friendship for that?”

“It’s not—I love him,” Lan Xichen tells them and Nie Mingjue moves away from the table.

“I need you to leave,” he presses out before he rushes out of the room.

Lan Xichen stares after him, but Jiang Cheng gets up as well.

“I’ll accompany you to the door,” he says and it’s not an offer.

Lan Xichen seems to notice that, because he gets up as well and makes his way over to the front door.

“Will you—will you tell him—”

“I will tell him shit,” Jiang Cheng gives back. “If you can’t even attempt to understand him, if you can’t even value your childhood friend enough to give him the benefit of the doubt, then I will do absolute shit for you. Do not contact him again until you’re at least ready to listen to his side of the story without being biased.”

Lan Xichen gives a short nod at that, before Jiang Cheng basically forces him outside of their apartment and it’s a special kind of satisfaction to close the door right into his face.

Jiang Cheng takes a deep breath once he locked the door and then he hurries into the bedroom.

Nie Mingjue is sitting on the bed, staring into nothing and Jiang Cheng immediately goes over to hug him.

“I’m so sorry it went like that,” Jiang Cheng whispers, pressing Nie Mingjue’s head to his stomach and Nie Mingjue slings his arms around him in return.

“I thought—why can’t he at least try?” Nie Mingjue asks, his voice thick with tears and Jiang Cheng has to swallow against his own tears.

“I don’t know,” he honestly says. “I really don’t know.”

“You don’t—you don’t think he’s right, do you?” Nie Mingjue asks and Jiang Cheng snorts at that question.

“Excuse me, was my outburst not enough proof that I am absolutely, completely on your side?”

“No, it was, you’re right, I’m sorry, I’m being stupid,” Nie Mingjue mutters and Jiang Cheng bends down to kiss his head.

“You’re being hurt by someone you trusted, who you know since you were a little kid. It’s normal to feel like this,” Jiang Cheng reassures him. “But I will always be on your side.”

“I love you,” Nie Mingjue mutters into his stomach and Jiang Cheng scratches his scalp.

“I love you, too,” he gives back and then topples them over onto the bed. “And now it’s cuddle time,” he decides and it’s not like Nie Mingjue is complaining, with how he’s arranging Jiang Cheng to his liking.

“Best time of the day,” Nie Mingjue decides and then falls silent.

Jiang Cheng knows that it will probably be a setback for Nie Mingjue and his healing, but he’s certain that Nie Mingjue will work through this as well.

Jiang Cheng’s soul is strong and he will always have Jiang Cheng as a support.

And Jiang Cheng hopes that it will be enough.

okay so. I am a smart adult with many important responsibilities. I have good taste and care about things that matter. for this reason, I’ve been trying to identify where in cql canon wangxian manage to fuck.

because they definitely do; I like a good post-canon getting together fic as much as the next guy, but it’s just not realistic.

allow them. it’s already been so long.

(just like this goddamn post turned out to be, let’s do a cut)

right. so initially it looks like you could place this right after the time skip in episode 33, because it shows us that wwx is with lwj in cloud recesses. we know that he spent the night in the jingshi because he wakes up there the next morning before he goes for a nostalgic tour of his old school.

and also visits the cold spring, where lwj is mostly naked. nice.

but wait! wwx is surprised by the scars on his back and chest. that seems like something he would have known about if they’d already been naked together the night before, so I’m going to say they did not fuck immediately upon wwx’s return to cloud recesses. okay, fine, they’re taking things slow, that’s cool.

maybe they could work it into the next night, then. oh wait, lqr is injured and... staying in the jingshi? for reasons?

I don’t know why. he must have his own house in cloud recesses, and it’s probably at least as comfortable as lwj’s, but here he is. he lives to stop his nephew from getting laid, I guess.

the next day they do some Q&A with the kids and determine that they need to head to qinghe to figure out what’s going on with this sword thing. great! we love a romantic road trip, plenty of alone time. but they also have to do their jobs, and then jin ling needs to get rescued from a wall of dirt, and jc is unfortunately there being himself, and then they have to grill nhs about his tomb full of angry sabers, etc. etc.

with all that going on, their next obvious chance is at the inn immediately after interviewing nhs. this evening has already included:

wwx gazing lovingly at lwj from afar

lwj carrying wwx on his back

lwj pawing at wwx’s robes trying to deal with his cursed leg

lwj helping wwx up the stairs, serving him wine, fixing his flute, and generally being at his beck and call

a very sexy and homoerotic duet

and now they’re alone and drooling over each other as usual. this seems like a plausible spot, right?

it does! but no. after they go back to the nie basement o’ swords and hear the backstory on nmj’s death, we see them walking in yueyang and lwj asks wwx how the curse mark on his leg is doing. wwx says it’s almost healed, which may or may not be a lie, but his inner monologue says:

he’s more concerned about the wound on his arm from the sacrificing curse, which lwj doesn’t know about, because wwx won’t tell him and they still haven’t been naked together.

also, this silly teenage shit doesn’t make much sense unless they’re still dancing around each other.

you guys love the sound of opportunities as they go flying past, don’t you?

right after this, lwj gets drunk. I’m aware that Stuff Happens in the novel scene that inspired this bit, and they do incorporate some of that into the show by having lwj commit petty larceny and admit that he “likes rabbits” as part of the softest and most loving conversation in human history oh my god

but lwj goes to sleep right on time, and the next morning, wwx is laughing and reassuring him that nothing happened.

after this, it’s time to go on a fucked up field trip with the kids in yi city, so they don’t really have any time alone for a few episodes until they’ve finished that and everyone is back at yet another inn. I wonder if they learned something about wasted chances and poor communication from this miserable songxiao story?

maybe! look, they’re being cute and domestic. there are currently no material barriers preventing them from having sex, nor will there be any specific evidence later on proving that they didn’t.

but they’re still firmly in mystery-solving mode and the juniors and lxc are floating around. the vibe isn’t quite there. if I were to pick the most solid reason why I think they’re saving room for jesus at this point, it would be the tension that happens when wwx again asks how lwj recognized him. lwj asks why his memory is so bad, and wwx replies that he wishes he had a bad memory. even though they’re comfortable and happy being together, there’s still some fundamental distance remaining. there’s no sense of romantic resolution. that was actually a point against all their previous opportunities as well; they’re all very sweet, but none of these feel like the place in a story where the romantic leads Officially Get Together.

okay, off to koi tower! shit is getting extremely real. everyone’s busy insinuating that they recognize wwx, but no one is saying it explicitly. wwx isn’t supposed to be here. the guy he’s pretending to be also isn’t supposed to be here. he and his boyfriend and his boyfriend’s brother are trying to figure out if his boyfriend’s brother’s boyfriend is a murderer. no one is comfortable and the political intrigue leaves no time for fucking in front of anyone’s salad.

I guess there’s plenty of time to make dozens of armed guards and like half the people they know wait while they have a romantic moment, though.

could they be more in love? And that sure feels like a romantic resolution that might be followed by narratively-earned sex.

ah. no, unfortunately wwx gets stabbed again. this certainly sucks, but it does have the helpful consequence of making lwj take him back to cloud recesses, where they are mostly alone and as safe as they can be in the circumstances. now there’s even more tenderness and also some plot-justified touching and skin exposure. plus, lwj just made a very public declaration of love.

too bad wwx has probably been unconscious since he started coughing up blood in the forest near lanling. he’s also still visibly in pain. fresh abdominal wounds tend to kill the mood.

but hey, the injuries on this show are only as serious as they need to be to move the plot forward and facilitate gentle h/c scenes, so by evening he’s looking perfectly healthy and walking around under his own steam like nothing’s wrong. I guess that problem can be ignored moving forward.

lxc then offers the the most devastating highlights of lwj’s backstory, like, all at once. it’s nice that he includes a flute solo to give wwx a second to process this mountain of terrible information. what the fuck.

there he is! the most devoted man in the whole world! turns out they can actually be more in love after all.

and then the following scene... look, I’m lazy and I don’t know how to make gifs, but screenshots cannot properly convey how good it is. you all know. the hesitant way wwx approaches, the slow and gentle piano version of wangxian, the two of them watching the snow together, it’s. ugh.

remember how I was talking about how the last scene with no material barriers was an unlikely candidate because of the lack of romantic resolution?

well, here’s wwx still being cagey at the beginning of this conversation.

and here they are in the middle of this conversation, having some epiphanies about the course of wwx’s life - I love this shot for a lot of reasons, but I extra love it because it shows wwx out in the snow, with lwj as the safety and warmth waiting behind him, god this show goes hard, holy shit

they both recall their vow to live with a clean conscience and internally say some very corny things about each other because they are both So Much, and then,

ah, what the hell. he can say it out loud after all. romantic resolution accomplished.

and then the camera slowly pulls away as wuji plays.

a slow zoom out? swelling music? listen, I am a connoisseur, I know a tasteful fade-to-black indicating a sex scene that won’t happen on camera when I see one. at last, we have a winner!

now you may think this post is finally over, but I actually have one more piece of evidence for you - the next scene shows the two of them the morning after, meditating behind a screen in the hanshi while lxc is waiting for jgy to show up.

before wwx got de-cored, he was a pretty powerful cultivator, right? the chances that he’s just bad at meditating or that he can’t stay focused on this task seem slim to me. so why does he keep falling asleep?

ok so

as usual after finishing an arc of mdzs my head is full, many thoughts. so let’s talk about the guanyin temple confrontation.

first thing that i kept paying attention to were actually the changes made in order to turn it into live-action. so in cql they had to make the gray-gray characters, the “there are no good or bad guys, just people and their circumstances” characters (unless you’re jgs, than yeah you’re a bad guy and everyone agrees on that actually) into slightly more black and white characters. by the end of cql we are lured into this fake sense of security, “haha, we know who the bad guy is!” (then a year passes and here you are, now a jgy apologist), by the end of mdzs, you just know that, well, decisions were made, unfortunate decisions, by many different people. 

cql had to make wwx into a bit nicer version of himself. the good protagonist couldn’t lose control and accidentally kill a bunch of people, and then kill another bunch of people fully willingly, cause his sister just died and that was the last connection he had to the idea that something still matters in this world. no, out protagonist should be... like a little bit nicer than that. so they lifted some of that responsibility for atrocities off him, but they couldn’t just evaporate it, could they? they had to put it somewhere. they put it on jgy. after all he’s the big bad in the end of the story, well, the only surviving person from all people that could be considered big bads, he’s the one that “did every terrible deed imaginable”. he could take that responsibility, they had to make his grayness into a slightly darker shade anyway.

i am actually kinda surprised by how different my reaction to jgy was in mdzs. obviously, there is a year difference between me watching cql and me reading this part of mdzs, and over that year i changed my opinion on jgy 5 thousand times and joined the camp “actually meng yao deserves all the best things in the world”, but anyway. when i was watching cql i was like, oh my god, can someone just kill him already, before he does something bad again, before more bullcrap comes out of his mouth, and also stop yelling at this kid about all the “valid” reasons to why you killed his dad. in mdzs my reaction to jgy’s confessions was like, “huh. he has a point”.

now don’t get me wrong there, some shitty things were done, but the thing is, the things he did really made sense from his point of view, from this position and life experience he really had no other way to go. i especially was convinced by his reasoning to why he couldn’t cancel his engagement with qin su. not only he would suffer from this story, because he already went through so much to make this marriage possible, but also qin su’s parents and herself would most likely suffer, their public image would be destroyed, only jgs wouldn’t lose anything. and you could feel the hatred and bitterness he felt towards his father talking about this, and everyone in the temple could agree with that, because he “just forgot he made another child”, he didn’t even notice.

another interesting detail for me was lxc saying, “it’s not that i didn’t know that you did some of these things, it’s that i thought you had a good reason for doing them”. so yeah, a reminder, lxc isn’t blind and he isn’t an idiot. he trusted a person he thought he knew better than anyone else, and he believed in this person. the problem, i think, is that “a good reason” is different for lxc and for jgy. lxc would understand a righteous reason, doing something for the greater good. working for wen ruohan? that was explainable. they all were fighting in a war, fighting for the better, brighter future, and meng yao’s contribution to that future was immeasurable. what if he killed some people there? he had a good reason in lxc’s eyes. but meng yao had other good reasons in his life, some of these reasons lxc never had to deal with in his life. survival, for example, is one of them. meng yao’s early years were very different from lxc’s. not to say that lxc’s life was easy, but it was never truly unstable. meng yao had to learn how to survive in a world where no one wanted him. he lived with one dream, promised to him by his mother, a future where he wouldn’t have to suffer anymore, where he wouldn’t have to smile at people he hated, please every one of their desires so they wouldn’t harm him. and then he entered this life promised to him and he still had to survive, but now in a luxurious man-eats-man world of lanling jin.

meng yao’s life really was this unstoppable ball of snow rolling down the mountain, and every decision he made just made the ball bigger and it would just roll faster. there is even a moment where jgy accuses lxc of being naive. lxc isn’t really naive, of course, it was said in the heat of the moment, but it is a fact that lxc was never kicked down a staircase, never had to crawl back up, and the thing is, at the bottom of the staircase, there are other good reasons to do things.

and in a way lxc understood that jgy in his position really didn’t have any other choices, he just couldn’t find peace in this mindset. he kept repeated through that part, “and yet, and yet, you shouldn’t have done that, you should have...” and he never said what exactly jgy should have done. because lxc doesn’t know. jgy doesn’t know. no one knows. what choices were better? how could he fix all that and still survive? in a way, lxc saying that reminded me of wangxian farewell in the burial mounds. when lwj asks, “you really indent to keep going like this?” and wwx, who wished, who longed for another solution, for some way out, asked him, “what else can i do? what method can i choose to resolve this, not use this technique and still protect people i want to protect?” and lwj didn’t have an answer. lxc didn’t have an answer either.

another amazing thing about guanyin temple confrontation, is that it’s very heavily wwx’s pov. most on the novel is his pov of course, but there were a loot of his thoughts in this arc. and he was rather understanding towards jgy. not in a way “i agree with every reasoning behind every decision you made” but in a way “i understand that you had your reasons, but all of them will become irrelevant really soon, they already are, because the crowd will only remember you as a son of a whore who did every terrible deed imaginable, and all the good deeds will be forgotten” 

now his thoughts on nhs, or who he suspected nhs to be, were way less nice. especially compared to live action, nhs didn’t make such an impression on me as he made through wwx’s thought process in the end of guanyin temple arc. of course, wwx is no sect leader yao, he is not the one to jump to conclusions, he just noticed that if you put some facts together, they actually start making a lot of sense, and formed a full picture. but he didn’t have any proof, so he kept it mostly to himself. yet he still thought for a moment about nhs as someone who didn’t care about collateral damage that much, who was ready to sacrifice lives of juniors, sect leaders, anyone, if it would add to jgy’s kill count and make his fall and destruction even more disastrous. not that those are not the things that happened in live action, but you know, when wwx put it all together like that in one paragraph, i really felt it. like, oof, dude it’s ROUGH. and not even jgy’s death was enough, as nhs basically admitted to stealing meng shi’s body and planning to repay jgy for what he did to nmj’s body. yikes

i mean i still support nhs in everything he does, but yikes

also side note, glad that the dead cats situation finally became clear for me. this whole year i was so confused about who left all these dead cats for juniors to find. i thought maybe xue yang did?? to lure wwx?? so apparently it was also nhs. good to know.

another detail, probably the last one my brain can generate for now, that pained me a great deal was my poor child jin ling. i already cried about some things related to him and this arc, but there was another little one in the very end here, after jgy died. jin ling realised, that there were now three people, wwx, wn and jgy, his little uncle, that were responsible for his parents’ death. people he had every right and reason to hate. all three of them. and yet he couldn’t hate any of them. he couldn’t avenge his parents, that died so long ago he couldn’t remember them, because all three people responsible for what happened, had something, some reasons, some circumstances, that made them really not the bad guys in jin ling’s life. and they all cared about him, protected him. how could he hate them? how could he not? and in this way this poor child repeats, unfortunately, his uncle’s curse. to have someone he wants to hate so much but just simply can’t. it warms my heart at least that jin ling has a much better support system than jc had when he had to live through that experience. so there is hope.
