Weak Words To Cut

Here are some weak words than you can often remove to strengthen your writing. I have made these changes as I edit my own novel, so I included examples from my writing to show you the difference.

When editing and cutting words, we are not talking about dialogue because everyone has a unique way of speaking, and it’s important to keep true to their voice.

Note: these are all general guidelines, and you don’t have to use all or any of them. Creative writing gives you a creative licence to choose how you write. Do what works best for you. Always.

Suddenly: technically speaking, everything happens suddenly, so use the word sparingly or it will lose its effect.

I don’t remember ever seeing a man in such little clothes before, and I suddenly despised the one piece left. I don’t remember ever seeing a man in such little clothes before, and I found myself despising the remaining piece.

Keep: When it disrupts your character’s life, and you want your reader to really take notice.

Cut: if removed and there is no change, then it’s not necessary

Then/Next: this is typically a filler word. All events happen in a sequential state, so it’s not always needed.

Then She was gone, her steps echoing through the halls.

Keep: You want to keep the word typically when something is changing in action, description, etc.

Cut: If removing the word does not change the meaning, then cut it. Typically if this word starts the sentence, it’s unnecessary.

Just: this is a filler word, and can almost always be removed.

I was just a game to him, nothing more.

Keep: if removing it makes your sentence confusing or changes the meaning, then keep it. Usually using the word words well as a limiter word. (Eg. it’s just me and my dogs tonight)

Cut: when it’s unnecessary and changes nothing.

Really/Very: these are weak qualifying/descriptive words, and you can absolutely find a better synonym

Your mother is really nice lovely.

Keep: typically these words are fine to keep when not used to enhance an adjective. (Eg. very next day, really think, very back of…)

Cut: if it’s being used to enhance a weak adjective, cut it and find a better word.

Is/Was: this is usually a passive voice, which isn’t usually the best for fiction novels, active voice is always preferred. Naturally this is a verb that you can’t cut from all places, so here are some tips.

Everyone was too busy focusing on their shopping to notice a human sliding between sales booths. Buyers and sellers occupied themselves with their shopping, too focused to notice a human sliding between sales booths.

Keep: when delivering information quickly its always best to just state the facts, so don’t worry about trying to find flowery words to describe everything.

Cut: If you can show what the person or object is doing instead of simply saying it, then change the sentence.

Started: every action has a start, so don’t write it unless you can tell me why it’s important now to know that’s it’s started.

The boy started to rant in his native tongue. The boy ranted in his native tongue.

Keep: if your scene is being interrupted or is still unfinished, then go ahead. This one is a little harder to see sometimes, so just see how you feel with it in vs removed.

Cut: it’s it’s unnecessary information, and nothing changes to the story or sentence when removed, axe it.

Seemed: again, this is more of a show don’t tell kind of thing

Time seemed to slow slowed as I held Vera tight against me.

Keep: if a character knows something intuitively

Cut: if you can show why the character is perceiving what’s happening

Definitely: this is typically just confirming facts that are already known to be true. Repetition is unnecessary without a purpose.

He definitely saw me, but I wasn’t mad about it. (This instance can for sure be removed, it’s unnecessary. However, I want this emphasis here, so I chose to keep it)

Keep: if it’s your character who is confirming facts as 100% accurate and ridding previous doubt

Cut: remove and nothing changes

Somewhat/Slightly: usually this is used when only trying to use a partial effect of a word, so the easiest fix is to change the word that it’s describing.

I looked away, slightly embarrassed.

Keep: if the words is truly the best way to describe what was happening in the sentence.

Cut: when you can use a better word to describe your action/emotion/whatever to be more accurate or it’s unnecessary.

Possibly/Likely/Probably/May/Might: much like some of the other weak words, these are just filler. Something either is or isn’t, and it’s best to describe here you can.

Probably Not with the way he was speaking to her.

Keep: if your character isn’t sure of something

Cut: if you can describe what’s happening, or it can be removed without changing the meaning

Somehow: this is usually an indicator of missing information

I thought I was an average girl in every way, and now I was somehow the first human to ever survive. (I don’t use somehow often. I am keeping it in this instance because none of the characters know how it happened yet.)

Keep: if your character is missing the information and doesn’t know how something became true or transpired

Cut: if you can explain how something came to be.

Adverbs: this is a great category of words to use in writing, but if used too often, it can distract from the story. A good rule is finding an even balance between adverbs and active verbs.

I squeezed her cold hand tightly in mine and made a promise to save her. Clenching her cold hand between mine, I promised to save her.

Keep: if it improves your writing by making it more clear and efficient.

Cut: if it makes more sense to use active verbs to describe what’s going on.

Totally/Completely/Absolutely: all filler words

He grinned at me, his plate almost completely full while mine was near empty. He grinned at me, his plate still full while mine sat devoid of even a crumb.

Keep: if it’s important to the story to know with 100% certainty, and this word gives the most accurate description

Cut: whenever it’s not needed

Thing/It: missing information/ lack of description

I was just accepting all the things they said as truth. I was just accepting all their fantastic explanations as truth.

Keep: if your character doesn’t know what it is

Cut: whenever you can find an actually description or name the object

A small summary of my beliefs

In no particular order:

1. I'm 100% pro-choice.

2. Gender does not exist. Only sex is real, and there are only two of them. You can be attracted to the same sex, the opposite sex, both or none. I think asexuality exists, but it's not a spectrum and it's way rarer than other sexualities.

3. I'm kink-friendly: I see no problem with kinks that follow the SSC (safe, sane and consensual) rule. I do engage in it on occasion.

4. I'm against professional porn, but I don't mind porn if the people creating it are doing it without a monetary incentive. I personally don't use it.

5. I support the Nordic Model of prostitution.

6. Since most of the people working in sweatshops are women and girls, unnecessary consumption of clothing (and other items) directly hurts women. I do not buy clothes that aren't second hand. The ones that I can't buy secondhand (i.e. underwear) I sew them myself.

7. I'm atheist, could be considered anti-theist by some. I have no spiritual beliefs.

8. I don't shave most of my body hair and I don't wear makeup. It's still difficult for me, specially my leg hair, but I want to show women near me we don't need to harm ourselves doing what men want us to do.

9. Kindness takes us a long way. I do my best to be kind to others even when I disagree with them.

I might be missing some stuff, but that's everything that comes to mind now. This blog is friendly to crypto-terfs. Asks and DMs are welcomed.

Robin’s never been fond of her birthday.

Steve’s heard her rants enough times to know that she’d rather treat the day like any other and not think about how she’s made another trip around the sun, taking her one step closer to her ultimate demise. About how birthdays put unnecessary pressure on the birthday person and the guests and how no one is ever 100% satisfied with the day so why even bother to begin with? And don’t even get her started on the birthday song tradition.

He gets it. More than most do.

But, he’s also not going to let his platonic with a capital P soulmate ignore her eighteenth birthday. Not when she’s lucky she even made it to eighteen and definitely not when she’s dragged him out on his own birthday just a few months ago refusing to let him wallow in his own birthday woes.

Robin’s more stubborn than Steve is though, so he’s had to get creative. He knows she hates surprises, but it’s the only way this plan of his is ever going to work. Besides, he knows she’s going to love it. Sure, she might grumble and panic a bit at first, but that’s just Robin being Robin at this point. He wouldn’t expect anything less.

In hindsight, he probably should have given her a bit more information about what he was planning besides asking her if she’d like to drive around with him today. Probably a lot more insight judging by the ratty-looking pajama pants and his threadbare Hawkins Swim team shirt she stole from his closet back in ’85 she’s wearing as she heaves herself into the passenger seat of the Beamer.

“That’s what you’re wearing for your birthday drive?”

Robin doesn’t even glance at what she’s wearing, shooting Steve with a confused look without a second of hesitation. “Uh, yeah? This is what I always wear on our drives.”

She’s not wrong. They do have a habit of piling into the Beamer in their worn pajamas just to drive around and get some much-needed fresh air. They’ll roll down the windows, let the music blast, and fantasize about where they’d go if they actually got the courage to up and leave Hawkins. It’s a habit that started to beat the nightmares after Starcourt and one they’ve kept up in the years since.

But that’s not what Steve has planned for today.

“But this isn’t a drive drive.”

Robin looks at him with raised eyebrows and that look she always gets when he’s saying words but she doesn’t know what they mean. A look that’s rare these days considering they can practically read each other’s mind. As if on cue, Robin’s expression changes as realization dawns on her.

She gasps before thrusting an accusatory finger in Steve’s direction. “This is a birthday thing, isn’t it?”

“Yes, it’s a birthday thing.”

“Steve!” Robin huffs, throwing her entire body back until her head thunks against the headrest an alarming rate. It’s a good thing she doesn’t have a history of concussions. “I told you I don’t want to do anything! You know I think birthdays are stupid.”

“And yet, you’ve dragged me out for every one of mine. M’just returning the favor.”

“That’s different!”

“It’s really not.” Shutting the ignition off, Steve twists in the driver’s seat until he’s facing Robin. She’s staring at him with half amusement and half seething rage. He can work with that. “Just trust me, okay? It’s nothing major but it does require you to not be in your pajamas.”

Robin studies him for a moment, appraising him from head to toe. If Steve knows her like he thinks he does, he knows she’s taking note of his own outfit to figure out what she needs to wear.

“Jeans and a nice shirt will be fine, Robs,” Steve reassures her.

Robin swallows and slowly nods her head. She grumbles something under her breath, too quiet for Steve to hear, before she reaches for the handle to let herself out.

“Oh, Robs!” Steve calls from the open window as she sulks her way to her house. “Please run a brush through your hair while you’re at it!”

Robin throws her middle finger up but it loses all its heat when she bursts into laughter. “I hate you!”

“You’ll thank me later!”

🥳 🥳 🥳

Robin starts to get antsy an hour into their drive, fiddling with the buttons on Steve’s radio at far too fast a speed for his old Beamer to keep up with. Without looking away from the road — Robin hates it when he’s not 100% paying attention — he swats her hand away and reaches behind her seat, hoisting a plastic bag onto the center console.

“What’s that?”

“Provisions.”

“Provisions?” Robin snorts. “I think you’ve been hanging out with Dustin and Eddie too much.”

Steve’s grumbling is drowned out by the sound of Robin ruffling with the plastic bag. Each new snack she pulls out is met with an elated squeal — chocolates, chips, the weird peanut butter truffle thing that some candy store two towns oversell. He’s pulled out all the stops.

“You really do listen to me,” Robin marvels, holding up the truffle.

“Kind of hard not to. You do a lot of talking,” Steve teases.

🥳 🥳 🥳

Another hour passes before Steve finally merges off the highway and onto the streets of Indianapolis.

The roads are crowded, full of Sunday drivers milling about, enjoying the rare warm evening winter weather, or running errands before the stress of the week starts. Steve doesn’t mind though, if anything he’s grateful for the slower traffic since it keeps him from being honked at for not knowing exactly where he’s going.

Eddie had helped him map out the directions, scribbling them down on the back of an envelope from the water company. He pulls out the folded envelope from his pocket and glances at it while they’re waiting at a red light.

“Do you know where you’re going?” Robin asks, studying him as he squints at the paper.

“Yes,” Steve says, glancing at the directions again. “Maybe.”

“Better make myself comfortable,” Robin sighs. She tries to kick her feet up on the dash, but Steve’s quicker, throwing her legs down before her shoes even make contact. “Rude way to treat the birthday girl.”

“Oh please,” Steve snorts. “You’d be pissed if I gave you special treatment.”

Robin tips her head in agreement just as the light turns green. Steve takes a second to stash the envelope back in his pocket before he eases the car back into motion.

They drive for another few minutes before Steve makes the final turn, pulling onto a secluded street on the outskirts of the downtown area. He steals a quick glance at Robin, watching as her face goes through a range of emotions.

“Is this…” Robin trails off, practically smashing her face against the glass of the window. Steve doesn’t scold her for the marks she’s no doubt leaving, smiling instead as she marvels at the neon sign hanging above the cafe/club hybrid. The same sign they saw in one of the zines she smuggled from her aunt’s house a few months back.

“Yep.”

“Steve!” She gasps, turning slowly to look at him. Her eyes are brimming with tears, her lips slightly parted as she tries to keep her emotions at bay. “I can’t believe you do this. I could— I could kiss you right now.”

Steve snorts, breaking whatever moment they are about to have. “I don’t think the crowd inside there would appreciate that and neither would I.”

“Ew, gross!” She laughs, wrinkling her nose as she playfully slaps him. “I didn’t mean it literally obviously!”

“Hey, I had to keep those tears away somehow!” Steve teases. “Your face gets all red when you cry and you’d mess up your eyeliner. I don’t think you want to look like a wet raccoon on your first appearance at this place.

“That’s rich coming from the man who finds the wet raccoon look attractive.”

“Hey,” Steve says, finally turning the car off. “You leave Eddie out of this!”

“You said it, not me!” She throws her hands up in surrender for a moment before she glances back out the window toward their destination. She hesitates to reach for the door’s handle, letting her hands drop to her lap instead.

“Hey,” Steve calls, letting his hand rest on her shoulder. He gives her a reassuring squeeze before yanking her closer to him. “It’s going to be great okay. Let’s just go inside, check the place out. You don’t even have to talk to someone if you don’t want to! No pressure, right?”

“Right,” she breathes, running her hands over her face. She takes a deep breath. “I can do this.”

“That’s the spirit,” he says, clapping her back. “Besides you’ve faced off against Vecna. Lesbians can’t be scarier than that.”

“You’re a dingus,” Robin laughs.

Steve laughs too, feeling the tension deflate. He gives her another moment to soak in the moment before gently nudging her out of the car.

🥳 🥳 🥳

“I know I said I hate my birthday,” Robin says later when they’re back in the Beamer heading home. “But, uh, maybe we could make this a new tradition?”

Steve snorts, stealing a glance at his best friend. Her hair is a mess, her skin slightly dewy from all the dancing or rather flailing around she was doing, her lips slightly swollen, and she’s got the reminiscence of someone else’s red lipstick peppered across her face.

“I mean, it’s not where I’d choose to spend my birthday,” he says, earning a harsh shove in return. “But, yeah, okay. It can be our new Robin’s Birthday tradition.”

This might be a controversial opinion but some of y’all need to learn to pick your battles and stop chasing the validation of PJMs and JJKs. Who cares if JJKs are hyping some fictional friendship and writing fanfictions because Jungkook stood next to some random dude twice? Who cares if solo fanbases crop out and don’t post the whole picture (that no one should be reposting btw)? Who cares if PJMs and JJKs don’t acknowledge their friendship? As long as they aren’t dragging Jimin or JK, or even overtly saying anything negative about their bond, literally why do some of you guys care what solos of all people think?

It’s odd to me that some jkkrs will go into solo spaces and then try to get them to acknowledge a member you know they hate and regularly drag. What are you expecting to happen? JJKs actually not mentioning or paying attention to JM is literally the best case scenario. I absolutely wish they would never look at him or talk about him or post anything about him ever again. I literally don’t care if they think JK loves random solider #2 or Mingyu or an inanimate object more than he loves JM and neither should you. They are NEVER going to acknowledge Jikook’s friendship, so stop expecting them to. That is literally one of the least offensive things I’ve seen them do this week alone and it doesn’t actually hurt Jimin or JK, it’s just annoying.

100% make fun of them in your own spaces for being so lame and immature about Jikook enlisting together, they ARE super weird for hyping up this random friendship they suddenly invented (and yes I know they were likely doing it on purpose), it IS really frustrating and sad how dismissive so many people are about Jikook -- but I still don’t understand what some jkkrs were expecting. I sincerely hope that whenever the Jikook travel show drops they keep cropping them out and pretending they’re besties with random bartenders and camera men because the alternative is them dragging JM and JK and their entire bond nonstop. Solos are NEVER going to acknowledge their friendship and I wonder why some jkkrs seem to want them to so bad? You are CHOOSING to go into their spaces and be annoyed that these people who call JM slurs and animal names on the regular don’t want to acknowledge his friendship with JK - and some of you are literally antagonizing these people you KNOW have no morals over something like this.

This whole issue snowballed because so many people are bored and miserable right now and tkkrs especially are looking for a fight ever since Jikook enlisted together (or honestly probably since Tokyo). I see how jkkrs can make an innocent post and get jumped and tkkrs can say the most heinous shit about JM and jkk imaginable and get away with it -- but if you’re active online you should know how it is and learn to pick your battles if you actually care about the people you stan. There was no reason for JM or JK to get dragged over something like this.

Anyways this isn’t the end of the world or anything, but I did watch this whole unnecessary drama unfold and opened my twitter account this morning to see report accounts STILL trying to clean it up, so I wanted to rant a bit. I’m sure the Jikook show will unleash the most heinous discourse imaginable so I’m saving my energy for that. Obviously people can do whatever they want, and I’m not saying jkkrs shouldn’t rant or be upset about it in their own spaces, I was just surprised by some of the reactions. Jikook enlisting together makes it obvious to anyone with a brain how close they are, that’s why the people who hate them are being especially weird and petty and obnoxious. JJKs were writing about how JK tattooed ARMY on his knuckles because he knows ARMYs hurt him or whatever just the other day so idk why some jkkrs were expecting them to suddenly celebrate his friendship with JM who they literally hate more than anyone else.

OK due to popular demand(well not really)

Here is Adventurental Corca CG Context thread and a small rant

After reading this CG I know Corca is already a disaster of a character but he is now really hitting it on the low for me what's worst is I lots a little respect for Barlitz after this hahaha

Also Bruh Habbit Avoided a big YIKES on this one and you'll see why

OK let's start

So we start with Corca asking Edgar if there's any quest for him to do in fact there's two and you'll be given the choice which one to go

We gonna start with Helping Barlitz since I know most of you wanna know more about Baricol

So If you picked To help Barlitz Edgar mentioned that he needs help moving his stuff cause he heard he's moving somewhere

Of course, Corca is worried thinking that he maybe moving really far away from Pays blanc but in reality he's just moving across the Street

Corca was relived yes and Barlitz is like still annoyed why Edgar sent corca to help him out

But since he's here they might as well do the job

Ok now this is where things get a bit heated

So after moving stuff, they took a break, Barlitz, then ended up profiling Corca about his whole Adventurental job, and he's asking if he ever had sex with his client's Corca was speechless and fell over a couple of Boxes Pulling Barlitz too

On the Floor, Barlitz continued his interrogation. And get this there roles were switched Literally Barlitz is now commimg onto Corca lmao

Well not coming on 100% Barlitz knows that every time he's with Corca he knows that he'll try anything to get into his pants so instead of Corca initiating it he did it to himself to save the unnecessary BS

And yes Barlitz is right cause tye moment they started Talking He was already thinking of ways how he's gonna fuck Barlitz lmao

The Baricol CG shows that Barlitz full-on accepted that when he's with Corca they just gonna end up fucking. He literally doesn't give a fuck anymore he even said that he can't think clearly when he's with Corca(Congrats Corca you fully broke him)

This is a rant, an oddly specific, very unnecessary Radio Silence rant

Okay so we all remember that one tumblr post in Radio Silence in which a user talked about how privileged and rude Aled was for criticizing the education system and not wanting to go to university

This post - and I know it's not real, I know the person who wrote it doesn't exist - makes me so mad every. Single. Time.

Like have you ever thought about the fact that some people are simply not made for university, some people are just fucking miserable when they're - yk - stuck in university, i mean having the privilege of being able to choose if you want to go to university also means having the privilege of being able to not go

Also just because you have the privilege of being able to go to university doesn't mean you can't criticize a system that is so obviously shit, like i'm sorry, but even as someone who actually kinda enjoys university i 100% think that we not only have the right, but also responsibility to criticize when we see deficiencies or problems in the education system

And what kind of weird whataboutism is this "You don’t want to go to university, because you know it would make you miserable and think that the education system is deeply flawed? Well what about people that can't go to university at all, you privileged prick? How dare you not want to be miserable for at least the next 3 years of your life!!!!" Like i'm sorry but that’s so idiotic i can't even

Just because you CAN go to university doesn't mean you have to, the privilege is that you have the choice, that it's your decision

watched the first 30 minutes of the new live action ATLA bc I was Curious and they have already committed three different mortal sins that I can't Not Rant about, spoilers for the first 30 minutes below the cut

1. They rearranged the order of storytelling to open with the Fire Nation attacking the Air Nomads.

And I'm not.... totally sure why? Like, my guess is either "we need to make an immediate dramatic hook for the people who have never seen ATLA before!" or "we need to explain the background for the people who have never seen ATLA before!" But the truth is, people never saw ATLA before it came out, and they were perfectly fine catching on to learning about what happened to the Air Nomads and the geopolitical state of the world in media res!! That is not an excuse!

By opening with The Attack On The Air Nomads, not only do they rob the audience of getting to do my favorite thing throughout, which is the ability to piece together backstory via being told details as the story goes on, but it also..... vastly undermines the impact that That Attack Happening is going to have later in the story. Instead of piecing together tragedy from 100-year-old ruins and getting the moment of "oh god" and imagining it, we're shown it directly upfront onscreen, which not only to me comes across as unnecessary and gratuitous violence, but it means that every time in the story that The Air Nomads Are All Dead is going to come up, instead of it being this weighty thing that we can only imagine that each small detail adds even more to that weight, the payoff was all upfront. We've seen it, there's nothing to imagine, any detail they give us is not adding to our understanding of the tragedy and increasing the tragedy to us at all, it's just a reference to the opening scene.

2. STATUS!!!!!

So 'Status' is a concept that I rant about a lot and am highly sensitive to in writing, probably bc in the gay theater camp day camps the first thing you need to teach your 8-year-olds in improv workshop is How To Respect Status if you want to have at all a reasonable adventure game; otherwise you have kids interrupting the king's big dramatic speech and hence Undermining The King's Authority and the adventure game falls apart but also so you don't get trapped in scenes where you've got two characters yelling back and forth "well I'm [this thing] so you should respect me!!" and the complete lack of respect between them totally undermines what both of them are saying and the fiction falls apart. I kind of joke but not really that I stopped watching Supernatural in like. season 8?? 9?? because there was some episode with Greek Gods and you got to the finale of the episode and Zeus was going "dO YOU KNOW WHO I AM??? I'M ZEUS. I'M A GOD. PUNY MORTAL" and Sam and Dean went "dO YOU KNOW WHO WE ARE??? WE'RE THE WINCHESTERS. WE TOOK DOWN SATAN AND ALSO SATAN'S MORE EVIL OLDER COUSIN. PUNY MONSTER OF THE WEEK" and I went "by day three of camp my nightmare 8-year-olds can do Status better than this. Why am I even watching this?"

In the first scene, the live-action ATLA severely undermines the status of the Fire Nation and Fire Lord and then continuous to do so throughout the entire opening.

The initial scene is some random Earth Kingdom spy running away with Fire Nation plans to attack the Earth Kingdom and getting captured and dragged before Fire Lord Sozin (to be?? monologued at by Fire Lord Sozin of 'HAH you fell into my TRAP, those plans were FAKE, we're attacking the AIR NOMADS' which is just. dumb. kill the spy, don't monologue at him and kill him, but also why the fuck are you letting an Earthbender spy into your presence in the first place???????) which besides the aforementioned letting?? an earthbender spy??? into his presence in the first place????? He:

is not wearing particularly fancier clothes than the other people around him; like, they're okay, but the 'total desaturation of all colors including/especially in the clothing' aesthetic that Netflix has going makes it not look very royal. that shit should have been BRIGHT red or 10x fancier to make up for the fact that it wasn't Bright Red

they are STANDING IN THE THRONE ROOM and INSTEAD OF BEING BEHIND THE CURTAIN OF FLAMES he's just STANDING DOWN THERE on the SAME LEVEL AS EVERYONE ELSE????? WHY ARE YOU EVEN IN THE THRONE ROOM IF THE FIRE LORD IS???? NOT ON THE THRONE?????? JUST STANDING AROUND???? THE FIRE LORD DOES NOT JUST STAND AROUND WHERE IS THE POMP AND CIRCUMSTANCE OF THE OFFICE????????????

and then beyond the absolute idiocy and letting a nobody no-name spy into his presence like that and dramatically revealing battle plans fucking idiot deserves to be assassinated for letting a spy earthbender get within three feet of him that's just extremely bad royal security, Sozin personally Murders this Random Spy. with his own firebending hands.

One of the whole things that makes ~the Fire Lord~ so terrifying is the sheer amount of weight around The Institution Of The Fire Lord, the courts and the backstabbing nobles of the fire nation, both the extreme imperial politics and complications there but also the almost deification of the office itself. The Fire Lord is untouchable, I forget if it's fanon or canon that they've got a 'descended directly from Agni / divine right' thing going but if it's fanon at least canon has those vibes, and one of the biggest aspects of the finale of the whole show is the combination of Azula's meltdown making it so that even though she was 'Fire Lady' she.... wasn't particularly scarier because in panicking and banishing everyone she'd totally undermined her own power structure, but also realizing that Ozai was Actually Just Some Dude Who Sure Was Pretty Good At Firebending And A Really Shit Person And Terrifying For What He'd Done With His Power but he wasn't a god, he wasn't impossible to defeat, when push came to shove he was just a firebender and as such his power could be stripped.

Fire Lord Sozin standing on the same level as his advisors and a random earthbender spy, and then doing things with his own hands, instead of, you know, sitting on that throne behind that wall of fire while this scene was happening if this scene really needed to happen in the first place, totally undermines that sort of deification level of status that the Fire Lord is supposed to have. Sozin becomes an Evil Scary Murderer Villain, sure, but what proceeds to be established about his character is. Nothing to set him apart from "a particularly skilled Firebender." Hell not even that, as nothing ever demonstrates that he's substantially more skilled than the firebending soldiers around him!!!!!!!

And it undermines the severity of the threat of the whole Fire Nation to undermine the status of the Fire Lord and hence the Thing That Makes The Next Fire Lord So Scary. hnnnnnnnnnng.

3. Every single character keeps giving extremely stilted monologues about how they're feeling?

It just feels like Bad Writing. And it also kind of feels like incorrect characterizatons? Big "he would NOT say that" mood but also just, like. Aang giving a three minute monologue purely to Appa about how he never asked for the responsibility of being the Avatar, he just wants to be like other kids, that just feels. So Cookie Cutter. So "gotta check off our refusing the call so our protagonist is Relatable!" and also just he would not say that.

This doesn't quite bother me as much as the other ones because it doesn't feel like a fundamental undermining of the narrative and/or the setting but it is Highly Annoying.

anyways defs not worth the watch. 30 minutes of my life Wasted. some of the costumes are kind of nice tho so might go back for the costume refs.

My problem is with the amount of people upset with this, like i knew we had a bunch of pedos around because of the way tappei writes the girls, but damn i didnt think there were this many of them 💀

yes ive heard about that....... im answering your ask late oops haah but i hope the situations a Bit better..... the toxic parts of this fandom give me a headache but my usual motto is to stay off twitter, touch grass, ignore people, and then hold onto my own viewpoints unless proven wrong alsjdflsdj but like. yeah this fandom is a bit tough to stay in when it comes to certain circles (for example the amount of people low quality shitposting / ranting about the fandom or whatever on rezero ao3 atm in the past days/weeks is. mm. interesting). not my first time being in larger fandoms that make you sometimes feel like youre fighting in the trenches (you could name off a few big fandoms notorious for being toxic that date back to like 2016 and odds are ive been in a couple lajdlf) but yeah seeing people complain about liliana and capella's designs and then overly fixate on emilia's boobs when these three characters have more to bring to the table than just that and theres lots and lots of good things to say about the s3 trailer and their designs..... mm. yeah. im squinting hard at a few of the things ive heard on that. but anyway!!

like the new designs are an Improvement. In General. like ok, as a boob haver myself ("boob haver" is the funniest phrase to me alsdjfls but it is true nonetheless, i am one) i do not give a shit about emilias larger boobs like ok?? her boobs are bigger?? she is still my fav ever and sometimes it just happens when youre still a growing teen/young adult and emilias back to her more revealing main outfit when she wore a different outfit in s2 so the difference in chest size is really not that much. but liliana and capella? those are Improved designs. i think ive talked abt the treatment of underage characters / characters who appear underage on my blog before (and i definitely couldve worded myself better then but i stand behind the fact that some of the stuff otsuka and tappei do regarding this in rezero is just Unnecessary).

could designs like emilia's still be improved on in other ways? yeah 100%, just in the sense that there could probably be changed a bit to fit her slightly more timid and soft spoken personality. or you could take different directions on it in general if you wanted. ive seen some great redesigns of her main outfit!! though her main outfit in of itself is pretty nice to look at imo and its iconic and well-known for a reason. im of the personal opinion that i wish it was a little less revealing in the same vein that her s2 main outfit was (i like that outfit a lot!!) but its still a really solid design overall.

i had some faith after seeing the anime designers fix up typhoon's original design to be More Appropriate, and i love how the essence of liliana and capella's designs were kept the same. like its not just that theyre a little less revealing (and even then, theyre both still showing a lot of skin!!! which is good!!! i like the improvement while keeping the main stuff the same), but stuff like liliana's pants aren't transparent (probably to make it easier to animate?) and the yellow/orange gradient in capella's hair looks great!! they also both look more like grown women which is a bonus. unless youre Weird about this shit which is unfortunately a small percentage of the rezero community. like you cant win with those sort of people ig, bc capella's boobs are bigger too ljasdlfj youd think that win more people over.

also i appreciate capella's sports bra bc unlike elsa's outfit it Actually looks like it's supporting her chest. if youre someone with boobs and you dont have a flat chest, youre gonna need support when being active or itll Hurt. and elsa Does Not have proper chest support okay. ill forever wince remembering elsa's design in that sense HAH....

anyway but i digress. i got no clue what to do with toxic people in fandoms despite spending a lot of time lurking in large fandoms with loud toxic people haah.... its hard to do much about it especially with increasingly declining media literacy rates everywhere.... the notorious misogyny/homophobia/etc that can happen sometimes in anime communities.... that sort of thing. i kinda just avoid it when it comes to rezero in specific, or briefly talk about it on here, or rant about it to myself in my head or chat with pals about it in private if it really frustrates me that much!! and id say im a pretty patient person hah... im not frustrated often. and the fandom is not all weird people of course and i can attest to that as ive chatted with a lot of people here... ive also seen a lot of people leave due to the fandom's Issues which is. totally fair tbh.

and i think rezero is often a "baby's first fandom" so to speak... i dont mean that in a bad way of course but its more like its the first exposure to fandom and fandom etiquette and fic etiquette and that sort of thing when it comes to english circles. or at least its a pattern ive noticed, so my theory is that that occasionally that combines with toxic fans and then you get a few people complaining about the community and how bad our fics are on rezero ao3 ig lajdlfjsdlf. which is false by the way :<< and an annoying misuse of ao3 as a free creative archive :<<

but ultimately i hope the rezero character designer's alright (and honestly theyve done super super great work - like the anime Did Not need to give emilia a bajillion outfits and go above and beyond with improving liliana, capella, giving the suwens and their hometown a whole unique aesthetic, etc). and also while i have stuff to criticize with otsuka and tappei... and the toxic parts of the fandom hah... i still enjoy rezero apart from that and the uproar with the designs has not chipped away at me too much!! ive been in this fandom long enough i guess lmao i just roll with punches at this point T^T but i also just try to look on the bright side a lot in general so ;-;;;

these are the sorts of things i like to be aware about but i dont like to get myself super involved with it (since itll probably make it worse and/or make me stressed for no good reason lmfaoo) and i wont let it enjoy the parts of rezero that i do enjoy a lot (which is to say like. the other 98% of rezero hah). so. getting off twitter is the biggest godsend i promise lajdlsfj.

but anyway!! yeah i dont have much organized thoughts on all of this, this is just me rambling my feelings on it. hope this all makes sense anon <3

Ramblings of a Lunatic

II 750 Words II Levi x reader II Pure fluff II You find Levi ranting about his feelings for you II Established relationship II

The soft blue hue of Levi's room at midnight slowly reached your eyes as you blinked awake. It wasn't uncommon for you to fall asleep in Leviathans tub, but you'd usually only wake up at a reasonable time and with the demon still in your embrace. This time, your arms were entirely empty. As you became more and more awake, searching for the missing warmth, your ears started to pick up on something. A soft murmuring, coming from near fish-henry's tank.

"It's just. ARGH!!!" As you peak over the edge, you find your demon clinging to his water-filled walls. He's turned away from you and sitting on his knees, his head apparently resting in his hands. Some other blanket than the one that you two fell asleep under was draped over his shoulders.

"MC is. Practically perfect. How can they just fall asleep so easily? And with ME of all people?!!" The panic in his voice is clear, but you also pick up on a tiny smile filled with pride. "Henry, I just still dont understand. Why would they keep sticking to me, when they could honestly get anything in the world?" A sigh. As the silence took its place, you debated if you should break your own cover. You could go over to him and comfort him, kiss him, tell him all his worries are completely unnecessary.

But, there was also another part of you that recognized the importance this moment had for Levi. He'd clearly done this before. He just needs to talk about his feelings to someone that isn't you, even if that means it needs to be a fish. Plus, it doesn't actually seem like Leviathan is in that bad of a mind-space. Even though you can't see his face, you can tell by the small things in his voice that he's just excited. He probably just needs to gush it out. So, you keep still, and stay listening to your demon.

"Whenever they smile I just KNOW that people would drop anything to see it again. I know I do. If they're just walking around I can feel the eyes that're attracted to them. It makes me want to pull them close and show everyone just how taken they actually are."

Memories with Leviathan start to surface. Just little things. Walking trough the halls of RAD with his hand ever-inching closer to yours. Always striding just a little quicker whenever either of you spot the other. All the tiny gift Levi has given you out of seemingly nowhere, but always whenever you were feeling a bit down. They all add up. You realize that it's specifically those things that make your relationship with Levi so perfect. The tiny ways that the two of you interact create a magical atmosphere, always growing with love.

As you relish the memories, Leviathan begins to talk again. "You know, Henry? I mean, you must. It's not like I haven't told you this like 100 times already, LOL. Anytime I see MC, my heart grows even more. Even now, its expanding. Just thinking about how they're currently in my bed, soundly sleeping. Knowing they're comfortable and safe, and that it's their specific choice to actually be with me, it just fills me with love. How can it not? I'm so unbelievably lucky." There's a sound that can only be described as a dreamily-and-heavenly-in-love sigh. "Speaking off, have I told you about today? Just as we were walking to RAD we.........."

As you listened to Levi drone on about you and him, you felt yourself get tired again. Understandable, since it's been well past midnight. The apparent energy that Levi gets while talking about you amazes you, but you can't keep stopping your eyes from closing by themself. As you slowly doze off the the sound of your lover's rambling, you hope your dreams will be filled with even just a fraction of the love you feel right now.

You wake up again, this time at a reasonable time and with your demon back in your arms. While waking up, your memories of last nights' happenings come back again. Even though the subject of your adoration is still sleeping next to you, you're sure he wouldn't mind waking up to your numerous kisses. Your not planning on telling him what you witnessed anytime soon, but you make sure to clearly translate your feelings over and over again, with each press of your lips.

I didn't like Luke in that moment. I just I don't know. I mean, it's like I was almost like, how dare you talk to her that way in her kitchen when she's just trying to help you out. I know he didn't see what she was doing. I know he didn't have the knowledge that Jess took a beer and was about to drink it and was disrespectful to Lorelai in her own house..I just think Lorelai was completely justified going out into the porch, into the back there, taking the beer away. She was still being nice to him, she was still just trying to talk to him right, and he was being nasty, unnecessarily nasty to her and dismissive, and disrespectful, and that's her daughter, And there ain't no way that guy is not going to get red Riot Act from that woman protecting her daughter. She was 100% justified. She was even justified kicking him out, like get out of my house, because that's what I would have done if somebody talked to me that way in my own house. And I have done that....And then and Luke comes in the room, completely ignorant of what's going down, doesn't even bother to ask her what happened, doesn't even bother to give her a chance at explaining, not that he is owed an explanation well, he kind of is owed an explanation, um, and she's offering one as a friend, right, trying to explain to him what happened, and he doesn't get it, and he so he starts getting very territorial over Jess and his manhood threatened. And I just thought it was unnecessary...[I mean, jam Hands is such a classic Gilmore...] I think that's that's one of the Luke classic rants. Right, was that that wasn't the first rant, but that might be the first classic. -Scott

Just a little note about my art materials.

I DO NOT use real animal fur in my art plush.

If you are already aware, great! You can go about your day. For more info or the reasons for this announcement, read more. (CW frustration, rant. Discussion around real fur vs fake fur and people attacking before they read.)

I am not vegan, but I feel a special level of frustration when people immediately assume I'm using real fur (or worse "dead animals") to make my plushies. Especially when I clearly say I'm using "faux fur" and "fabric" in my posts/captions. Faux means "fake" and real fur (i.e. pelts) is not fabric.

Ignorance is totally fine. Not everyone has access to the knowledge or experience to differentiate real vs fake fur. BUT I expect everyone who comments to be capable of reading the caption first.

Beyond people not reading, though, it's the immediate assumption that I'm a murderer or something, as if realistic things can't possibly be fake. And then sometimes jumping straight into attacking me over it instead of taking four seconds to read what I already wrote about it.

It creates drama where there is none. It's unnecessary, manufactured outrage for no reason. I'm just here to chill and share my fiber arts that I work incredibly hard to make look real, but very much aren't.

I make realistic, FAKE animals so that people who don't want to be irresponsible by cuddling a living (or dead) exotic can still experience holding a realistic replica. Since they're soft and weighted, they are also immensely comforting for anxious or neurodivergent people.

Faux fur gives me the freedom to make any animal, real or not, in virtually any color. Real fur, on the other hand, is prohibitively expensive, limited in "design" and color, and terribly, woefully difficult to sew (it's literally leather under the hairs). Besides I have a moral objection to cutting up pelts to be used for fashion or other non-essential items, except for indigenous or extreme climate cultures.

That said, not all my plush are 100% vegan. Some contain horse hairs as whiskers. These are ethically collected and sourced from a Native American small business. If needed, I can remove them upon buyer's request. At least until I find a synthetic alternative.

So from here out I'll just be weeding out people who act before they read because I'm getting very tired of it across every social media site I'm on. It's like 3-4 comments on every post now, everywhere. I'd assume it was trolls except for how sheepish people act when I reply that it's fake. I should be flattered they think it's real but mostly I'm just tired of fighting drama fires.

Anyhow. Thank you for your time. Let me know if y'all want to see a real vs fake fur educational post. Even if you are vehemently against real fur, it would serve you well to know the difference so you can make educated decisions.

My Problems with HOO

Yes, this is a particularly long post, and mostly for the rant.

The complaints are mostly about Percabeth, Frazel, Nico's coming out, Caleo, and a little bit of extra things like Rachel and Grover.

First things first - Percabeth. I hated it in HOO. Honestly, it felt that if you made it the Six instead of the Seven it would've worked fine, because no one could tell the difference between Percy and Annabeth anyway. I really wish they were allowed to grow and be their own characters. I honestly preferred scenes without Percy for Annabeth's character. Percy felt flat to me. Also, I hated the judo flip and the continued use of 'Seaweed Brain' and 'Wise Girl'. Both nicknames feel immature to me, and Percy is smart. He shouldn't be constantly told by someone who should 100% be on his side about most things that he is dumb.

Frazel age gap? How about no. Including the entire love triangle with Leo. Personally, I love Frazeleo, but only if the age gap is fixed and/or they get together when they are all over twenty years of age. If I wrote HOO, Hazel would've been fifteen.

Nico's coming out sucks. Period. Reading back on it, I cannot believe it was approved for publishing. First off, it's hugely triggering and really terrible to be outed to someone you aren't close to. Jason and Nico are not close, and I don't exactly feel like they'd ever be super close. Jason is, as stated by Reyna in the books, an 'all-American boy' and he's very straight in most interpretations of the books (although not in my own, but that doesn't matter). He's literally the last person I would ever consider coming out to. Logically, we all know Jason isn't really homophobic, but he is a personification of the ideal blonde-haired, blue-eyed Anglo Saxon, and that creates a lot of hesitancy. It's stereotyping, but it is very true for a lot of people. I would've preferred Nico come out, on his own terms, to Hazel, his sister. Hazel's not the ideal blueprint for homophobic, not like how Jason is, and Hazel is really close to Nico.

Caleo. I can never state how much I hate Caleo. On paper, I like it. It's really cute and I like that kind of thing. But in practice, oh my gosh. I hate it. For one, neither Leo nor Calypso gets a satisfying arc if they end up together. Because Leo is struggling with a seventh-wheel, and he needs to accept himself as enough without a partner. Likewise, Calypso always feels left behind. She needs to realize she doesn't need a partner to be fulfilled in life. Rick really disappointed me with both Leo and Calypso, due to their incredibly unnecessary romance. I mean, I get why Rick liked them together, but they definitely didn't need to be.

Lastly, little things. I loved Coach Hedge, but I would've vastly preferred it if he was replaced with Grover. Rachel was underappreciated, she could've provided real insight to the Seven. Plus, she's great friends with Percy.

In conclusion, HOO is a pretty good series, but it has many glaring flaws such as Percy and Annabeth's fusion, the Frazel age gap, Nico's coming out, Caleo, and smaller things like Grover and Rachel. No book is perfect, and that is all the more evident in series like Heroes of Olympus by Rick Riordan.
