Did a screenshot redraw of that moment Belos knew he fucked up. With markers!
WIPs/links to higher quality under the cut 😌
So what I did to create this image was hold my paper up to my screen and trace over the screenshot's lineart, then worked out the rest of the details on paper. The straight lines on the top and bottom are where the original screenshot cuts off.
Tumblr media
Once I decided the sketch was finished I put my blending card (special paper for the markers) over the sketch on a lightboard and traced over it with my pens.
Tumblr media
If I made mistakes I would sometimes use my white paint pen to draw over them.
Then, on a piece of scrap paper, I would test out my markers to see what blending combinations looked good.
Tumblr media
Tangent: I use alcohol markers, specifically COPICs, though I also have some Prismacolors too. Alcohol markers are built for blending and I recommend looking them up if you are interested. I use copics because they have a brush nib and while they're expensive, you can easily get refills and replacement parts so you'll never throw them away. You can buy 30 year old markers that are still good.
First I colored (most of) the characters (that took a lot of time, especially since I was cautious about how to color in things like the eye and would test on scrap paper first)
Tumblr media
Then I tried making a background but I really didn't like it
Tumblr media
So in digital art I cut out the characters from the background to see how to fix it and came up with the idea of darkening it significantly.
Digital experiment on the left, experiment onto paper on the right.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
A lot of these WIPs look very different because of me taking pictures of the photo with a phone camera and doing different filters every time. I have a scanner but I've never liked how it comes out.
If you want to see a higher quality version of the final image, here's links to where I uploaded it on Deviantart and Newgrounds.
Also a Youtube upload of that video I made!
Note: There's an animation error in the original ToH clip I used where the Collector's clothes are miscolored, and the reason they're not here is because I fixed it.

Dear Wasyago,
Strange, I have always thought it was spelled as Wasayago. But recently I've realized, I can't read very well.
I want to send appreciation today, to you.
You've taught me a lot about art. You've taught me a lot how to draw certain things, and you have opened my eyes to new perspective of art, ever since I started following you. Colours are brighter, I experiment more, I can see a specter of visuals that was previously hidden from me. It's like gaining shrimp colors.
Your art feels like an art classroom. There's sun pouring in from the windows, and there's tree leaves in front of them. Every time you come in you see different art projects. Paints add on to the tables, that will never scrub off again. There's dirty cups with paint water, and brushes, in the sink. It's lunch break, and there's people here. Some are just doing their math homework right before class, some are working on their sculpture, some are picking out paints, some are working on their new piece, on a fresh canvas. And it is so alive.
Your art feels so alive. Like the leaves, the people, the stains. It's really nice to see, every single time you post, how lovingly you bring a character into the world (My favorite so far is that one doodle of Modern au Gillion eating noodles, I have it in my favorites gallery).
I would like to see some unfinished, maybe forever to be so, doodles that you weren't especially proud of. We'll love it all.
Respectfully,
Marcus Bloodsmith
oh, thank you so much, this is so sweet qwq
im happy to know that you feel this way about my art, and im glad i could help you with some advice! it feels a bit weird to show unfinished or scrapped art under such a nice message, but yeah why not. and its funny that you mentioned the gillion eating noodles one, because its also one of the pieces that i really didn't like and didn't want to post hdgsh. i dont have that many unfinished drawings left because i delete or redraw most of them, but i have a couple that might be fun to share... and i guess it's gonna be a long post bc i wanna tell a little about each one or at least name them.
there's this art of chip, the first time i properly tried to figure out a way to draw him back when i just started listening. redrew this piece later, kept the sketch on the left, but the right one i changed completely because i didn't like the vibe this one has.
Tumblr media
there's this attempt at redesigning caspian after i found out he was a water genasi, plus the first version of that art of caspian, pretzel and gill. this design didn't feel "caspian" enough, it looked too soft and kind where i wanted him to be more layed back and chill and sarcastic and with a bit of an edge. redrew both pieces later. the underwater drawing also has an unfinished background in this version, i added some fishies later so it didn't feel that empty.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
some random sketch of gillion to show off how the lightning scars look on his face and neck. i quite like it, but it didn't really fit in the post with three proper drawings and one sketch so i decided to scrap it.
Tumblr media
there's this drawing where i tried to figure out how the capital of the undersea looked like. i really didn't know where i was going with it and didn't have a good idea when i started drawing, so its a mess of things with nothing to really focus on. i tried to add a character on it later to breathe some life into it, but it didn't work out since i didn't focus it on the character from the beginning. plus i don't like how the colors turned out, and the entire concept of the environment feels weak and boring to me. i still want to draw more concepts of the undersea and try a couple other ideas, but probably at a later date...
Tumblr media
the first version of whatever try it was to design gill's armor. (fun fact, i have more armor designs scheduled for tomorrow). this one i redrew almost immediately, i really didn't like how it turned out and how the legs were cut off and it looked so messy with no real accent point or personality. plus the smaller copy of the drawing in the corner just didn't look good. im not exactly proud of the redrawn version either (that's why i did another one yesterday lol), but im glad i redrew it anyway, it looks a lot better than this one.
Tumblr media
the first sketch of that one gillion drawing. i couldn't figure out the colors for it for so long and wanted to drop the idea entirely. but i left it to sit for a couple hours and eventually got the motivation to come back to it and finish it. for most of the illustration pieces i did for jrwi there were multiple versions, where i just didn't like the first one and redrew the whole thing with a different composition and colors. didn't save any of those drawings tho...
Tumblr media
this drawing of jay but with green wings and a slightly different color shirt. it was actually the first version of this drawing, and i changed the colors to blue later. wanted to post both of them side by side but then decided against it. that's why this drawing survived and was properly saved and not just deleted.
Tumblr media
more recent attempts at designing the chaingel. i like the concept, and the pose in the second sketch is pretty badass, but the execution is just not there. it doesn't feel right, doesn't have the right kind of vibe that this character gives off. so im sure i will try and draw her later when i figure out what's missing and how to show her personality in the way it feels in my head. but these two sketches were never going to see the light of day, so now they're here.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
aand this is it, this is everything that wasn't deleted in the past month for one or another reason. i feel like im more chill with deleting and redrawing things, so a lot of initial sketches and concepts never get saved or seen by anyone. im also on mobile so i can attach only ten files lol. not that it matters, the last two were just random figure drawings for warm up, not much to talk about.

hi! i love your art and what really sticks out to me is your grasp of form (like how you can depict a person with just a few lines) and how you arrange shapes and colors
is there a way you studied that, if at all? i'm looking to improve both things i listed as i think my art looks pretty flat lol again i love your art and you're a major source of inspo :)!!
aww omg first of all thank you so much! second, seeing this message made me really excited because this is something i'm very mindful of and really enjoy about other peoples art so i feel really honored to fit into that description! to answer your question directly: i used to paint abstract and i think i have learned a lot about shapes and color from that experience as well as studying other abstract artists.
while painting i found it liberating to use difficult and/or hard to maneuver brushes. there is a lack of control that comes with attempting to paint with a cloth or the rough end of a broken crayon that can make the creative process feel less restrictive. this is absolutely possible to do with figurative art as well. the key for me was to let the brush strokes dictate the shapes and not put too much focus on making a silhouette look 'realistic'. another thing i really love to do is to paint with 'negative space'. back when i was painting with oils i would often paint several layers of solid color and 'carve' shapes into the canvas with something like a palette knife. this is a basic layering technique that i use for digital art as well. u can see a sort of example of that with these drawings that i have posted:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
it is essentially two layers, a solid color background with another solid color on top of it that i erased parts of to make a silhouette. i find this method not only to be a lot of fun, but the contrast between void and life makes you take the form a lot into consideration. another thing i like to do is to use a big, hard to maneuver brush and create the silhouette by painting the shaded, darker parts first. while that works really well with solid colors and flats, it can definitely be used for any sort of talent and style. using these two very different illustrations i have done as an example:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
of course this is a matter of taste and style (like no need to use these strong contrasts and overwhelming shadows, that's just what i like to do lol) but these methods where sort of my gateway to getting a better understanding of shape and form. as for colors, i can only recommend to try and mess around with it but from experience i think some sort practice with figuring out how to balance different shades of black really helps.
my tip! if you are into character drawings, try illustrating a character as if they were only one solid color, build out their shape without sketching beforehand, let your hands go wild, then try to fill in the solids with details. or do the reverse, fill a paper with nothing but color (even graphite works great!) and try to make the silhouette by erasing. let the materials you use decide the outcome of shapes then consider what works and what doesn't, then do it again! and keep an open mind! what didn't use to make any sense eventually will (-:

I have some Harry Potter art I did that I just realized I never actually posted
Anyways, these are from this summer on and in chronological order starting with this drawing of Sirius I used in an animation
Tumblr media
This style is absolutely not my usual one, I was drawing on Adobe Animate which has way fewer brushes [...that I could find lol- I have since figured it out a bit more but it's fun to experiment] and you can very much see that I gave up trying to redraw his hands lol (i just color picked from my reference pic and colored right on top in a new layer bc animation is hard enough like that)
(I'll reblog with the animation when I find it bc I do not remember in the slightest where I put it)
Up next is a Drarry thing I did in Photoshop both to test out Ps and to illustrate one of @drarrily-we-row-along 's fics iirc (yes this was this summer, yes I have no recollection of it lol)
Tumblr media
Again, not my usual style but I guess my usual style is me doing doodles in class so this could definitely become my usual style
Sirius Black again! Based on a pic of Kit Connor
Tumblr media
Did I spend the most time drawing and shading the pool toy despite the fact that there's a whole entire human in the pic? Absolutely lol
Next up, Black brothers!
Tumblr media
This was meant to be a quick sketch to try out some new brushes/new coloring style bc I actually decided to watch a CSP (clip studio paint) tutorial for once
Based off of the technique of using watercolor brushes, I did the four houses
Tumblr media
The raven/crow/eagle/whatever bird that is is traced bc birds are really hard to draw and I just noticed that the brush is visible hovering over the lion but oh well
This one is really just because the cottage my family stayed at during vacation had a sauna lol
Tumblr media
This was actually a pretty fast drawing because the background is a picture which makes it so much easier, especially given that I drew that in a moving car
Also his glasses are floating lol i'm so good at details like that [i have glasses i should know how to draw glasses]

If it's not too much of a hassle, could you explain some of your process for the monochrome drawings you normally do.
(I assume these are digitally created. If not, I need your scanning skills)
I'm just experimenting with making digital art resently, and everything I've drawn so far has looked flat and plastic like the Simpsons
I don’t know if this is gonna make any sense but I’ll show you my process lol. I have my degree in illustration with an emphasis in printmaking and I think that influences the way I do my digital art a lot. I tend to treat each shading layer like a screen, if that makes any sense. Like I can remove content but I cannot necessarily add it back In.
So like obviously I’ll start with a sketch. this is usually very loose and doesn’t always correspond to my final lineart. I am not 100% committed to anything in my sketches ever- kill your darlings and all that.
Tumblr media
Then I’ll do he basic lineart over top of that. I think the key to making fun dynamic line art is getting a good brush that lets you have pressure control. If everything is the same line width it’s going to look flat. And you can see how much my lineart doesn’t match up with my sketch. The sketch is just for mapping placement and pose- not the final look. I think people spend way too much time on their sketches and it makes the whole thing feel…overworked. Idk.
Tumblr media
Next I’ll add in the blacks and decide where I want my shading to go. Again I want to point out the difference in line widths. Like- because Tim is closer to the foreground he’s drawn with thicker lines than Bart is.
Tumblr media
Next I’ll add a base ground
Tumblr media
I then duplicate this base layer and set it to multiply, then erase out the parts I want to be lighter. Because Tim is in the foreground, he is the lightest object.
Tumblr media
Then I take the layer I just duplicated and erased and do it again. Because I removed content from it already it isn’t going to cover up what I’ve already done and I can continue to remove shades with it.
Tumblr media
Then I add a texture layer over top of all of it to make it more cohesive and even out the tones- usually set to screen or lighter color
Tumblr media
Idk if that helps at all. Feel free to as if you have any questions about it

Body art as an opportunity to leave a mark of his own on you
Author's note: This is based from my character Mateo, who happens to be a yandere. I made a visual novel where he is one of the main characters. If you wanna play my game(to what i will be really happy) here is the link: https://simemeow.itch.io/love-stuck
You sat with Mateo in the hall looking at his various magazines. "Wow! Your magazines are so unusual! Very colorful,” you described. And in fact, it was true, a lot of these magazines can be used as a reference for drawing. The photographs and articles published in these magazines could be described as a creative boom. The minds of these people fascinated Mateo, the way they played with lighting, people, added elements of creativity, masterfully edited photographs, creating small masterpieces.
"Yes, that is right. I really like their serial releases. Whenever I have trouble creating any ideas, I look through these magazines and with renewed enthusiasm, I pick up a pencil and sketch. I will be honest, sometimes making a sketch can be a challenging task, with a lot of experience, I still face this problem,” he confessed.
You listened carefully to his problem, not to say that you really understood what he was talking about, but you still felt sympathy for him. As you mulled over his reasoning, you began to imagine some ideas in your head to help him overcome his misfortune. At this time, Mateo turned the page, and you saw a very strange thing. “Why is he not wearing clothes, and besides, why is there paint on him from head to toe?” - you asked.
“Ah, this? This is one of the types of art, it’s called body art,” he explained. Your eyes were glued to this strange art, you had never seen anything like it before, much less heard about it. Mateo watched your interested reaction, deciding not to turn the page yet so that you could watch the man outlined to your heart's content.
Your cheeks turned a soft red shade, various thoughts regarding this man entered your head. “Was he ashamed when they painted on his naked body? Was it ticklish? How did the person feel who painted on it and used it as a personal canvas?” - all these thoughts raged like waves.
And then it hit you. It was a bold idea, but you weren’t sure you could handle it. Just one thought made the blob in your cheeks turn a couple more shades darker.
Mateo let out a chuckle, his eyes carefully scanning yours, amused by the faces you unconsciously made, showing the awkwardness you felt inside.
"What are you laughing at?" - you asked angrily.
Because of your straightforward question, Mateo could not restrain himself and fell into an uncontrollable laugh.
“What a bastard you are! I've been thinking of all sorts of ideas to help you with your art block. And you!" - you pressed him.
"Is it true? And what kind of ideas did you have?” - the interest in his voice again made you come to your senses about your shameful idea. “Um… Haha…” your tone told him that your idea might have been a little awkward to just say out loud. Connecting the dots, he understood perfectly what your thought was, a smile appeared on his face. “Aren’t you weak?” - he joked.
“Why the hell is it weak?” - you shouted at him in defiance.
"Well, I don’t know, if it’s hard for you to say your thoughts out loud, then acting on them will be even harder,” he teased you.
You gave him an irritated look that screamed not to joke with you. “Bring your brushes and paints, now we’ll do Body Art,” you said arrogantly.
-Hm? - Mateo did as you said.
You stood opposite each other, waiting. You didn’t dare make any movements, all the clothes you were wearing were still covering your body.
“You know, you don’t have to do all this to help me. Especially since it causes you such inconvenience. Let’s just limit ourselves to some part of your body that you are not ashamed to reveal,” he suggested. His proposal was reasonable, standing in front of him naked for the first time would be quite embarrassing for you. That's why you decided to wear shorts and give him complete freedom to do whatever he wants with your legs.
“Okay, if you want to rest, tell me, okay?” - he warned you.
Mateo took a thin brush and began to make a rough sketch of whatever came to his mind. The sensations from this brush were twofold, because on the one hand you were relaxed, which made you sleepy, and on the other you were ticklish, which is why your hips twitched a little, which in turn forced Mateo to paint over this place repeatedly.
In some places you looked at what Mateo drew, it was an image of a dove and a raven fluttering in the sky, which were decorated with bizarre shapes of clouds.
“Beautiful,” you commented. “Thank you, be patient a little longer, I’ll finish soon,” Mateo asked.
He took a larger brush and dipped it in green, leaving a lavish sized painting of his own on you.
“I’m done,” he answered joyfully. “Thank you for being my model,” he said. You immediately got up from the couch to look at his creation, the first thing you noticed was his name, which he wrote in capital letters. “I wanted to add the word property there, but I think you wouldn’t appreciate it,” he joked. “Of course I wouldn’t appreciate it!” - you shouted.
“What do you think of the drawing overall?” - he asked.
"It’s good,” you answered.
Mateo lit up with happiness, his smile was passed on to you. “I’m so glad, especially because I could leave something of my own on your body. “You can’t imagine what a pleasant feeling this is,” he began to explain to you in one breath. And from his appearance it was clear that he was really happy that he could write all over your leg.
“Well, if it makes you so happy, then you can continue drawing on me,” you suggested. Mateo’s smile became even wider, and he hugged you, which is why the undried paint was imprinted on his clothes. You both laughed because of this situation.
From now on, on some days Mateo draws on you, sometimes what you ask, but mostly he draws something of his own. A great way to combat art block isn't it?

I absolutely love following along with your art and the process behind it! I'm curious about more behind the scenes stuff, as I have picked up digital art after not having drawn regularly in 10+ years.
When you do your drawings, what steps do you take? Do you use real references? Skeleton sketches? I'd love to know more about how you approach things digitally!
Oooh, first of all, thank you so much @emeraldzephyr! It is such a lovely thing that you decided to pick it up again!
As for how do I organize myself for drawing, every person works with a different procedures and it is important to know what works for you. For me is organization and inspiration.
For me, the most important thing is having references. It is more important than experience, more important than skill and even than inspiration. When you start messing with a blank canvas you need to know first hand where you want to go, or at least, have an idea. I won't likely start drawing without some references pictures. I learnt this when I took classes last year and this is probably the only thing that actually fully stuck.
My main resource for them is Pinterest, and I navigate through it with intent. I also have multiple packs of pictures of models and references that I have purchased in Artstation. Either way, references, to me, are essential and necessary. In Pint for example I have different boards, some for poses or compositions, some other for finishing, some other for colors palettes, or effects, or styles. I may have (and it is likely to be that way) multiple references for a single illustration ("I like the composition of this one, but the color palette of this other one, but the light works incredible in here, and wait, how was exactly the curvature of the nose of Joe Quinn in this perspective...? Shit! Keery's moles!! How were them distributed in the right side of his face? asdfadfs").
So you see, this is the first and the main thing I do. And I am also fattening with pins all my boards anytime I've got the chance (on my way to work, in public transport, waiting in lines, etc.), so I don't run out of ideas.
When it comes to actually drawing, I always make my canvas extra large and fit the main reference there so I don't get it out of sight (probably the one I'm using for composition) and make a first sketch than I later proceed to fix because it is often that I get wrong the proportions or the perspective, and that's okay. I can do five or six layers of sketches and then I do a first lineart that is messy, but it compiles everything that I have from different references. I spend a lot of time with this. Before shit gets serious and you start with colors, it is important for me to be happy with the sketch, or I may work a lot of hours on this particular illustration and you will end up hating it because "fucking shit, that ear is too small, how didn't I see it before!!!! [yes, I have no shame in showing what I think I failed miserably, the next piece was better, and so on. I keep learning everytime. I trust the process in broader aspects of art, not only in piece by piece]).
I create folders for the color process and try to organize the layers in it, first painting them with plain colors in separate layers and then adding layers once the whole illustration is fully coloured, first starting with shading, and then to light.
For me it is really important to play with the different effects of layers, play with opacity, gradients, brushes, tools, etc etc. I always find some effects that I wasn't expecting and the quality of my work will rise up just because I just found something interesting that weren't expecting at all, so, yeah. I play a lot with my software. All the time.
And finally when I am happy with it as a whole, I add a few filters (noise, blurs, etc.) If I want a very specific effect and I don't know how to do it, I have no doubt in stopping for a minute and finding a tutorial that teaches me how to do it (like the flare in this illustration, or the video effect moving color channels in this one). I always keep in mind that I should not get frustrated when I don't know how to do anything because I can always google it and it is a great opportunity to learn something new.
I am so so so sorry if this was too long, and probably it wasn't interesting enough, but that's what I do. And again, I want to make myself clear when I say that there is not a correct way to do things when it comes to art, this is just what works for me. I am no expert, I had to try and fail many many times to find the right approach for me without getting sad or frustrated. I, myself, have reconnected with art not that long ago after a decade, too.
I wish you the best of luck with your reunion with digital art!! Looking forward to seeing your pieces <3

I doodled these pumpkin girls a few weeks ago and while coloring them I’ve decided they’re a pop group called Jackie and the Lanterns
Just some haunted pumpkin girlies to kick off October. Feel free to draw them if you want (with credit obviously), I feel like they’d make a really fun dtiys for spooky season
And for your viewing pleasure, the original sketch using my shitty dollar store markers (because I’m bad at convincing myself that I deserve to use nice things) as well as the colored pumpkins with the paper texture and no background.
This started out as a silly doodle and became a bit of a texture experiment. When I started to color it on my iPad I decided I needed to shade with dots, which I haven’t really done much of before. Let me know if you have any tips for next time, I ended up making my own brush situation for them because I’m silly
And while I’ve got you here, Idk if I’ll do Inktober or anything adjacent this year, I’ve had mad burnout that I’m still struggling with, I can’t decide if Inktober would help me feel creative again or if it would make things worse.
I might try it out, don’t get your hopes up though, I make you no promises
Maybe I’ll post older Inktober stuff on here, since my tumblr is really sparse anyway
ps apologies for the alt text, I hope it’s helpful, I’m still figuring out how to use that in the most helpful way so any feedback would be appreciated :)

my go at Enki!
Tumblr media
so uh yeah, I'm not the best at drawing humans, especially faces, but this game has consumed me completely and I couldn't help myself lmao
I had to make a fanart of one of the characters, and since I'm playing as him currently, so I figured, why not?
this time I used a brush that blends easily, but bc of that I think the colors I used on his face blend too much and I should've used more darker colors; well, a lesson for another time, I'm done fucking around trying to fix his face, I really need to take some anatomy lessons before drawing a human
but still, it was a lot of fun and I definitely learned some more things about drawing people, which I don't have much experience with
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
additional stuff, first one is 3 of a lot of changes I've made to his face, since I struggled with it the most, I know it still isn't perfect, but I guess it's not the worst
then the 'no hair' version lmao, kinda looks like a cenobite or some shit
then the special message in the book :>
then the sketch; it was supposed to be just a sketch, but of course my brainrot would not have it and I had to go all the way with it
then the transparent version, I didn't have the energy for full blown background, so I decided to use the game logo for it
that's it for now! I love this cruel game

Commissions Open: 3 Slots
Tumblr media
Hey y’all. I decided to open up some commissions to make some extra money for the holidays. Payments can be made through Venmo.
It goes without saying, but please note I have the right to refuse a commission if it is something I am uncomfortable with.
I’m offering the following:
Half Body Commissions: $55 per Character (ask about bust commissions! I can try to work with you)
Chibi Commissions: $35 per Character (flexible depending on the complexity)
All of my commissions come with a color background and some decorative brush textures. If you should like me to add an actual setting in the background such as a forest, city, room, etc., please discuss this with me beforehand. I will charge a background as though it is another character with a full price. No exceptions.
I won’t do NSFW or Mechs.
NOTE ON FURRIES/COMPLEX ARMOR: Complex armor is going to cost quite a bit more and will take more time to complete.
Furries will also cost more depending on complexity since I have little experience drawing them but I am willing to try to work with you.
Both Furry and Complex Armor commissions will be a longer turnaround time, but I will be consistently communicating throughout.
Please send clear references.
Payment will be due upfront upon confirmation of the physical sketch. I can fix certain aspects of the drawing once it is confirmed, but note: I WILL NOT DO REDRAWS ONCE THE DRAWING IS COMPLETED.
You can ask for up to two sketch redraws if necessary. Please note that I use my own traditional pen sketches for my digital art.
If one part of the sketch is unsatisfactory, I take elements from other redraws and put them together for the final product. If you’re not ok with this, please be aware that you will still have two sketch redraws to utilize.
Send me a dm here if interested. Thanks so much!

Jenny Anxious (Loose Digital Line and Wash)
My first posted fanart, & my first artwork of a girl (at least, on my full-on art account)!
Actually, I sketched & painted it from last Tuesday to last Thursday. The rest was deciding what to type in my post🤓...& life😥.
I’ve been meaning to make a fuller drawing ever since last year, when I got into the show (Fun fact: I didn’t grow up with MLaaTR. Didn't, don't, and likely won't have cable🤷‍♀️). Personally, I like her self-conscious, slightly shy side.😊 I was really shy as a teenager and her hurt crying in Raggedy Android took me back to that time.😢
She’s one of the first girl characters that I find approachable & fun to draw: an expressive character, fun shape language, and lending herself well to great gestures.
Experience
Sketching so loosely like this was quick, fun, and freeing, but the painting took a while. Painting isn’t my strong suit, so I kept it as a simple complementary harmony (even the floor is a mix of red-orange, cyan, and black).
Behind-the-Scenes: Inspiration, Mindset, & A Self Critique
There were a couple of inspirations for this sketchier, line and wash style. Technique-wise I was inspired by the animation philosophy of Jim Tyer by having color hold the line drawings together. Art style-wise: I was inspired by the character concept art in the 1993 Neon Genesis Evangelion Proposal: watercolor/ink/gouache-like coloring, some with a single color around the character. (link if you’re curious: https://evangelion.fandom.com/wiki/Neon_Genesis_Evangelion_Proposal#Gallery)
Mindset-wise, I wanted to try to make myself keep moving forward. Once I moved forward, I would not go back to fiddle! From sketch/drawing to painting to even this post.
Now, self-critique: The coloring fortunately turned out fine, but the lines aren’t dark enough from a distance/at a smaller size, especially on the facial expression. I should try going back with 1) the same pencil brush but darkening up where needed [could be the quicker route, since no need to readjust to another brush. however, need to build up a bit more], 2) using a different, even darker brush near the end, whether Fresco’s Natural inker or Fine grain [no need to build up lines, but more of a brush behavior instead of a pencil behavior]. Another possibility: to try to keep my process quick, maybe I could try something like a Quentin Blake technique, with a loose sketch for laying out and free-flowing final lines. Maybe it will help hit 2 birds w one stone and help with my storyboarding drawing skills.🤔

Day 10 – Tokaru Bond
Copper got up late in the morning. He decided to turn on the radio and listen to some music. He took a quick glance out the window as he scanned through the stations, and suddenly noticed someone laying out on the street. His eyes widened, and he leaned closer to the window, hoping to get a better glimpse. The individual looked almost like one of the Tokarus, but not quite like Sketch or Heather specifically…more like a mix of the two, sporting longer hair and two tails. The odd Tokaru wasn’t moving, which made Copper believe they were unconscious.
Both intrigued and concerned, Copper went downstairs and exited the house to get closer. When he got to the Tokaru he cautiously grabbed their shoulder and began to shake it…but the Tokaru was unresponsive.
“Copper?”
Copper heard Broom calling for him a short distance away as he ran to meet up. Broom and Copper looked down at the Tokaru, both with concerned looks.
“Are they okay?” asked Broom.
“I don’t know. I tried to wake them up but they’re not moving.”
Broom looked closer and placed his hand on the Tokaru’s chest. “Well, I can sense some kind of energy, so I don’t think they’re dead. But I don’t know what to make of this…guy? Girl? I can’t tell.”
“I’m not really sure there’s any real way to know without talking to them,” said Copper with a shrug. “I’ll…admit; when Sketch or Heather has their back turned I can’t tell at first glance whether it’s one or the other.”
“It’s easier when they’re together,” Broom replied, prying one of the Tokaru’s eyelids open. “Heather’s just a little shorter.”
Suddenly the Tokaru’s other eyelid opened, and they turned their head to Broom. Both Broom and Copper were startled at this, and they stepped away as the Tokaru got up and brushed themselves off.
“Hey, guys,” they said casually. “Sorry to scare you like that.”
Copper was even more confused. Something about the voice seemed familiar, but it wasn’t distinctly one he knew. “Who…who are you?”
“Hm?” The Tokaru looked at themselves and noticed their odd-colored shirt, causing them to realize something. “Oh! I see…give us a moment, Copper.”
Broom joined Copper in confusion. “Us?”
The Tokaru closed their eyes and their Third Eye appeared at their forehead – significantly brighter than what Copper remembered with Sketch or Heather. In an instant, the Tokaru flashed with bright light, and Sketch and Heather appeared in the same place, steadying themselves so as not to fall. The sudden phenomenon caused Broom to jump, grasping at Copper in fright. Copper was startled as well, but he soon turned to Broom with a look of slight annoyance. Broom saw this and blushed, letting go of Copper.
“Is everyone alright?” asked Sketch.
Copper approached the two Tokaru. “What was that? And…what did you guys turn into?”
Heather decided to answer him. “You remember we said we had powers stemming from mental energy, right? One of those powers happens to focus our minds and bodies on someone else, and we essentially merge with them. It lets us combine our thoughts and utilize each other’s skills to pull off more powerful and more complex abilities.”
“We call this a ‘Tokaru Bond,’” Sketch interjected.
Heather nodded and continued. “It’s a lot more effective when both people involved are seamlessly working together. We’ve tried the Bond with a few others, but it’s sometimes difficult to fully cooperate with one another, and that ends up making those particular Bonds kinda useless.”
Broom nodded. “You know, when I performed Clarity with you two I actually noticed there were memories you both had that were almost exactly the same, as though they were copied. I’m guessing those were moments where you two Bonded?”
Heather nodded. “More than likely. We named our Bonded selves Stanza.”
Broom snapped his fingers. “That’s where that name came from. And I guess that’s part of why I sensed so much of an overlap between your experiences…when you Bond, you’re also sharing emotions and memories with one another, yeah?”
Sketch shrugged. “That does seem to happen, though it’s not quite a direct process like your Clarity. In the case of a Bond, those memories just kinda bleed in between both minds…except in instances when one of us is TRYING to share a memory with the other.”
Copper nodded in understanding. “Okay, so that explains why you two were somehow one person…I guess. But…WHY did you do this?”
Sketch scratched his head. “Well, a few days ago when I was chatting with Heather, she made an interesting point about this place. The universe seems so tiny that we can see ourselves down the street thanks to its looping boundaries…but the sun and moon seem to look and behave normally like the limits aren’t there. It didn’t seem to make sense to us, and this morning we decided to investigate. So we planned to fly up into space and see if there were some answers, and we decided we’d have a better chance of a successful, um, ‘launch’ if we combined our energy.”
“But that apparently didn’t pan out,” Heather continued, shrugging. “When we got pretty high in the sky, we started to feel some strange sensation. It was messing with our minds, and it felt like everything was getting way too bright.”
“You probably shouldn’t have headed towards the sun,” Broom replied.
“We’re not that dumb, Broom,” replied Sketch. “We faced away from the sun when we started flying.”
Broom looked away in shame. “Sorry.”
Heather continued. “But yeah, it’s like…even with us facing away from the sun, even with our eyes closed!... We were experiencing some kind of bright flash, and a strange force was just overwhelming us. And I guess we must’ve conked out…”
Sketch and Heather looked down at the street. At the space where they laid earlier, the road was cracked, with a slight indentation roughly the size of their Bonded form.
Copper looked concerned. “Wait, you guys fell from the sky unconscious onto the street?! Aren’t you guys hurt?”
“We’re a little achy,” Sketch replied, “but I think any real pain we would’ve had subsided while we were knocked out. We recover fairly quickly. In any case, we can kinda confirm that there’s a different sort of boundary in the atmosphere preventing us from going up any further.”
Broom raised his hand. “I know this is probably dumb to ask, but…this Tokaru Bond you guys did…you could do this with anyone?”
Sketch nodded. “We’ve Bonded with other Creations, and one or two Utopians…it doesn’t seem like there’s a limit, though it seems to work better with Creations.”
“Creations?” asked Broom.
“Beings born from magic,” Sketch replied. “I know you’re familiar with the concept of robots. In a sense, Creations are the same, but magic and alchemy are used instead of machinery and computers.”
Broom thought about the comparison, and seemed intrigued. “Ooohhhh! That’s kinda cool! So…would the Tokaru Bond work on us?”
Sketch thought for a moment, looking to Heather, who appeared unsure. “I mean, I can’t think of a reason why it wouldn’t…” He turned to Copper. “Mind if I try it with you, Copper?”
Copper’s eyes widened. “Wh-what? I don’t know…”
“It’ll be pretty quick,” Sketch said reassuringly. “It’s painless, it just might feel kinda weird. You’ll essentially have another person sharing your mind and body, so you might hear me talking to you from inside, and occasionally moving your body. I’ll just demonstrate for a few seconds and then I’ll let you go.”
Copper sighed. “Alright, I’ll give it a try. What do I have to do?”
Sketch reached his hand out to Copper. “Just hold my hand and relax.”
Copper looked at Sketch’s outstretched hand and hesitantly grabbed hold of it.
Sketch then nodded. “Alright…TOKARU BOND!”
And soon Sketch flashed with bright light. Copper turned away for a second in reaction, but then turned back to find Sketch still standing before him. Heather and Broom looked confused, but Sketch appeared completely unresponsive, still holding Copper’s hand. His Third Eye was a strange blue hue.
“Sketch?”
Heather walked closer and nudged Sketch…and he fell limp to the floor. She was suddenly panicking, trying to shake him in hopes that he would respond. Nothing was happening.
Wait, what’s going on?! Copper?
Copper suddenly heard Sketch’s voice. It wasn’t coming from where he was laying…it sounded like it came from within his head. “Sketch, is that you?”
Heather heard this and turned to Copper. Broom was already staring at him with concern. They both noticed there was now a blue Third Eye at Copper’s forehead.
Broom pointed to Copper’s head. “Is…is Sketch in there?”
Heather looked to Copper in confusion.
Something’s wrong…I can’t seem to move!
Heather sensed Sketch’s communication within Copper, and her eyes widened. “Sketch! Are you alright?”
Copper was looking a little stressed. “What’s happening? This is getting scary…”
Okay…this is a new situation. Apologies, Copper, this isn’t how a Tokaru Bond usually works.
Copper looked over to Sketch’s body, slumped on the street. “You said it was supposed to combine the bodies and minds! Why is your body over there and your mind in here?”
I don’t know…I’m beginning to suspect this is an alteration I have in this weird world. Willing to bet Heather might have the same thing going on…
“So your mind is all that combines with Copper when you perform the bond with him?” asked Heather.
Seems that way. I don’t have any of my energy, so I can’t pull off any moves of mine. And I’m struggling to get any control of Copper’s body. I’m feeling kinda useless at the moment…
“Well, if you hypnotized Copper somehow, would you be able to control him?”
Copper looked at Heather, growing more anxious and upset. “I’m RIGHT HERE.”
Heather backed away. “Sorry! Sorry! I’m just worried, and very confused! The Tokaru Bond never did this! And now my hubby is stuck in your head!”
“I KNOW!” Copper growled. “HOW do we get him OUT?!”
Copper, relax. I’m scared too, but panicking like this doesn’t help. If you just calm down, we might be able to figure things out.
“That’s easier said–” Copper looked at Broom, who was befuddled at everything that’s been going on.
“I can’t hear what Sketch is saying right now,” Broom said to him. “It’s kinda like you guys are talking to a ghost or something.”
Copper sighed. He closed his eyes and tried to communicate with Sketch in his head. “Okay…I honestly don’t know what to do about this. This feels extremely weird.”
I’m sure it is. I’m sorry, Copper…between this and the light bulb thing I’m probably not making a great impression on you.
“No, I… I mean, you did pull that light bulb thing after I told Heather how often people liked to deceive me and pull pranks on me.”
That wasn’t meant to be a prank, Copper! I didn’t mean to offend you when I laughed…it startled me too, honestly. But I was just trying to help you in that situation.
Copper sighed and nodded. “It’s fine. I’m sorry. You and Heather have been helpful to me since I arrived here, and you’ve both been very nice… I guess it’s my past experiences that still give me doubts…”
We can work through this. The whole universe here is weird to all of us…I really think we should be looking to each other to solve some of these mysteries.
“I…I can try.”
Well, now that I think I’ve adjusted to things here, I finally think I’m able to do something.
Suddenly Copper saw strong black sparks emanating from his right hand. He looked worried, as did Heather and Broom.
“What are you doing?!”
Well, at the very least I seem to have figured out how to access your fervor. Still can’t move your muscles yet though.
“Could you not do that?!” Copper brought his hand closer to his face, and suddenly noticed a strange glow around Heather and Broom.
Oh, hey! Look at that!
Copper moved his hand away in panic. “STOP!” He realized he shouted out loud, startling Heather and Broom. He focused on his mental conversation again. “Stop doing that! It’s messing with my sight! You obviously saw that!”
I did! You don’t realize what happened, Copper. Your eyes reacted to close exposure to your fervor.
“Yes, and that’s bad! I remember seeing that happen once before, when I was a kid! I was getting upset about something, and suddenly I saw that glowing around folks and it scared me! I closed my eyes hoping it would go away…it eventually did, but I couldn’t even explain how it happened!”
You must’ve had one of your hands close to your head. But Copper…that glowing you saw is aura!
“...What?”
Heather and I see it all the time! You mentioned how others of your kind could read the general thoughts and emotions of others…that’s exactly what the glow is about! It just seems like you need your fervor close to your eyes to make it visible. Please, raise your hand to your head again.
Copper looked to his hand, still sparking with black electricity. He raised it to his forehead as if trying to screen out the sun, and it caused the glow to return to Heather and Broom.
There it is! That purple glow around Heather? That signifies worry. Broom’s got the same thing going on, and you can see little flares of pink…that’s confusion.
“Is…is that really what’s going on? How do you know just by color?”
It’s something I had to figure out over time. There’s other little intricacies that can suggest more specific thoughts, but right now your eyes aren’t honed to that. But this is pretty big for you, Copper! You have a way to see into a person’s emotions!
Copper smiled a little. “I…wow…”
“You guys have been awful quiet for a while,” said Broom. “What’s happening?”
“It’s hard to explain,” said Heather. “Maybe Copper could tell you once this is done.”
Well, this wasn’t how I expected things to go for a Tokaru Bond demonstration, and I apologize for that. But on the plus side, I’m at least happy to have helped you discover how to see auras for yourself.
“Yeah, I…thank you. Sketch. But we still haven’t figured out how to get you out of my head.”
Well…I feel like an obvious option would be to try and replicate the same thing we did to get into this predicament. Go over to my body and grab my hand.
Copper did as Sketch told him. “What now?”
I need to try and make this work… I can definitely sense my energy in there, so that’s a good sign. TOKARU BOND!
Copper suddenly felt a rush through his body. The blue Third Eye disappeared from the foreheads of both Sketch and Copper, and Sketch opened his eyes. He got up and looked around as he dusted himself off.
“Whew!” Sketch said with relief. “That was a slightly scary experience. You alright, Copper?”
Copper nodded. “Yeah.”
Heather approached Sketch and hugged him. “I’m glad you’re okay. What was it like in Copper’s head?”
Sketch paused for a moment, thinking of a response. “Alien, unironically. His mind is different from the ones I’ve come across in Utopia. I’d need more time in there to figure out how things work.”
“Please don’t,” Copper replied.
Sketch laughed a little. “I’ll still be curious, but I won’t force you into it. I’m just glad things seemed to work out.”
Copper turned his attention to his house. “If it’s alright, I’m gonna go home. I hadn’t had anything to eat yet.”
“Mind if I join you?” asked Broom. “I’m kinda curious as to what went on. I’m still confused…”
Copper thought for a moment. “Alright. I think there’s two chairs in that kitchen...” And thus the two left for Copper’s home.
Heather turned to Sketch. “We actually haven’t had breakfast this morning either. Let’s go…I’m sure that weird adventure in Copper’s head has left you hungry.”
Sketch laughed. “Hard to say…I was away from my stomach for so long!”
Heather laughed. The two made their way home. As they did, Sketch looked back to where Copper was walking, showing a little concern…

Behind the art- step by step of how I made THIS post! https://at.tumblr.com/torchickentacos/happy-valentines-day/wb89h200y8qy
1: thumbnail art for idea at 11 pm the night before starting the real deal.
Tumblr media
ACTUAL step 1: sketch, kind of map out the planes of the face. I STARTED with the asaro head planes but eventually just kind of ended up making my own little system that probably isn't great but whatever, it works. spend ten bajillion hours and 75 references on this stage to make the proportions right or at least close enough and also swear off trying to draw open eyes in profile view or at all, if possible.
Tumblr media
2: block out grey underneath, will be made into the base for clipping layers. I'm grabbing layers after making this, so if it doesn't align entirely, that's because it was altered and moved around a bit for the final product and not in accordance with the first sketch.
Tumblr media
3: start adding where the divots (shadows?? deeper parts?) in the face are. I used a semi-soft?? round brush that kinda blends or could be harder depending on opacity, idk how it works but I used it pretty much exclusively. Here's how I sort of see the light and dark areas??? but tbh it's less of a 'science' and more of an 'experiment in some random ass garage'.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
4: no more guidelines since we've blocked out in grey what goes where, roughly. Darken the eye sockets, add shading under the nose, sort of find where the cheekbones and jaw are, and go from there. Start adding deeper creases and stuff, leaning towards detail work. Ignore that Drew's side has lighting and more shading, I accidentally did all of that on one layer fjgdjfgdjk.
Tumblr media
5: add eyelid top because you forgot
Tumblr media
6: get sidetracked and draw the eyebrow before remembering to sharpen the black lines. At this point I'm writing this all out live as I draw. It's been... 5 hours???
Tumblr media
7??: work more on shading in her face. Remember to blend his out because it looks janky in comparison.
Tumblr media
optional: congratulate yourself on that nice eyelid.
Tumblr media
Blend stuff out, alter stuff there, end up here, ignore the hole in her head
Tumblr media
8: spend literally 3 hours blocking out hair and realize drew's fucKING EAR IS MISSING
Tumblr media
step idfc anymore: FINALLY START COLORING OH MY GOD IT IS COMING TOGETHER
Tumblr media
Step???: coloring hair and adding a jacket and stuff!!! hair looks janky but with the lighting plans I have it's fine.
Tumblr media
Decide you hate parts of it so you redo it. Go back to messing with hair. It is now 9:47 PM. Notice that Drew looks like a corpse. add warmer shading to him.
Tumblr media
change mroe stuff. it is now the next morning. add backlighting. his hair is bugging me but i literally have no time to care about that.
Tumblr media
FUCK AROUND WITH LIGHTING HELL YES I AM SO CLOSE. What I do is blue shadows in multiply and light peachy gold overlay for light. IMPORTANT NOTE: SUBSURFACE SCATTERING IS YOUR BEST FRIEND FOR LIFE!!!!!! That's the orangey glow you get from being backlit.
Tumblr media
Final touches!!!!

In Too Deep Chapter 6
A Hint of Heart
After eating and making some coffee, Mad went back to the lab to get started on some proper work with Mare’s blood. His main goal was to begin noting any differences between his blood and the average human's. Mare was called away right before leaving the kitchen to follow Mad and quickly ducked out when asked what he was assigned to do. Little did he know that his not answering Mad’s question just sparked his curiosity about it even more.
Mad easily got lost in his work, drifting away into a zone as he worked. Filling up page after page with notes, rough sketches, and using colorful sticky notes for different kinds of notes for what to research separately or to get a separate collection of paper to create an experiment.
Hours passed, Mare hadn’t returned, and Mad eventually grew sleepy. He eventually made his way out of the lab, giggling when Al purred loudly and rubbed his body against his legs.
Al was always so happy when Mad went to bed and patiently waited on the bed for Mad to clean up himself for the night. The cat went to his own work when Mad was out of the shower and brushing his teeth. He had a very important task of warming up the bed and making sure the mattress was as soft as possible for Mad. Al happily meowed as Mad came into the room and crawled into the bed. As soon as Mad was under the blanket and comfortable, Al nuzzled himself against Mad’s stomach, curling up into a little ball and purring as he felt Mad pet his back.
After watching some videos on his phone, Mad fell asleep. He had a deep, peaceful sleep and woke up how he was used to. Alone. Al was out exploring the house and Mad just rolled out of bed, heading for the bathroom.
He dressed for the day and went to the kitchen, making a fresh pot of coffee, and found himself staring at it and thinking as he waited. Mad wondered if Mare was going to come back. People often got too scared or annoyed with him and left, never coming back. He had one person that always came back that wasn’t paid by him, but even then, they weren’t here as often as Mad would like.
Mare was different. Not just because of the whole vampire thing, he was just chaotic, unapologetic about who he was…fun. Mad was known to be blunt and ask a lot of questions and, usually, others would tell him to stop, but Mare would answer him. Although he’d tease, Mad was used to playful teasing and almost liked it.
He felt his face go warm and shook his head to change his thoughts. Mad needed to work on a different project since he had a meeting for them soon. A quick mug of coffee made and grabbing a pack of pop tarts for breakfast, he made his way back to his lab. Losing the day to work once again
x~x~x
Mare appeared in Mad’s lap in the early evening, ready to holler a greeting but stopped when he saw what Mad was doing. Mad was wearing his earphones again and rocking to his music, this time softly singing along to it as he began cleaning off the table in front of him.
“Now your melody is calling my name”
His voice was soothing, calming even and it was just so lovely to hear. Mare found himself watching for a bit and Mad was unaware of his audience as he kept singing,
“It’s a similar sensation, similar sensation”
Mare did decide that he’s enjoyed enough and went over to Mad. He placed his hand on the table and leaned towards him, grinning as Mad turned to face him as he grabbed a fresh cleaning wipe.
“Oh, you have something on your face,” Mad commented and lifted his hand, cleaning off the smear of blood that was on Mare’s cheek. Mare went still and Mad didn’t notice the hint of a blush on his face since he just went back to cleaning. A moment passed before Mare regained his brain and he grabbed Mad by the hips, pulling him in. Mad squeaked a little and blinked as Mare took his earphones out and placed them down on the table.
“You do realize you just cleaned blood from my face, right?” Mare asked, still holding Mad as he spoke.
“Yes.” Mad stated. “You’re a vampire, blood is to be expected. Although, I would like to hear what you did to end up with blood there. What kind of task was done that ended up with-” Mad didn’t get to finish and was moved again, the back of his hips pressing to the table as Mare roughly kissed him. Mad could only cling to Mare’s arms, a whimper coming out of him as Mare pried his mouth open with his tongue. His eyes fluttered shut, Mare’s hands sliding up and squeezing his waist. He could taste some iron…blood on Mare’s tongue. Mad had started to fully melt into the kiss when Mare pulled away, looking proud at what he’s done.
“Does that answer your questions?” Mare asked in a whisper. Mad just looked up at him and lightly nodded. “Good.” He loved how just a kiss could turn Mad into a puddle and the idea of ruining him became more and more of an attractive idea. “I need a drink.” Mare stepped back to give Mad some room. “You got anything good in this giant house of yours?”
“Uh-” Mad cleared his throat. “No, I don’t really keep alcohol here. There’s some cooking wine the chefs will use, but that’s it.”
“Chefs? You have chefs?”
“I have some that I’ll hire for events or if I have guests planning to come over for an extended time,” Mad answered and reached into his pocket, pulling his phone out. “The only place I know of that sells alcohol is this bar I keep being told to go to.”
“Oh?” Mare giggled at that. Mad being drunk could be very interesting.
“I don’t really drink a lot but I can have my driver take us so you can get something for yourself.” Mad offered, starting to text already.
“You have a driver? How rich are you?”
“I’m fairly well off.” Mad shrugged. “Been since I was born, family money and my own have me not worry about it.”
“I am so getting you fucked up tonight.” Mare chuckled. “I wanna see the rich boy plastered.”
“I don’t plan on really drinking a lot. I’m not even sure what all there is. I just drink what I’m given.” Mad finished his text.
“Even better. I’ll be sure to take good care of you and let you have one hell of a night~ Mare giggled.

Project 3’s goal was to create a voting poster. We had to pick an inspiring quote from a list to base the idea of the poster on. I picked “The political core of any movement for freedom in the society has to have the political imperative to protect free speech.” —Bell Hooks.
I didn’t know where to begin for this quote, and I honestly don’t know why I picked it since I didn’t know what to do. I just felt like… it wasn’t generic? I didn’t want to pick a quote that I already had of bunch of ideas for, because the ideas were basic and related to posters I’ve seen before. So, I just went with Bell Hooks and dissected every word I could. In my original sketches, I thought “core” was an interesting word, and what has cores? Apples! And jokingly I drew an apple thinking it would never make it past the sketch stage. We later did small group critique in class and both my partners really liked the apple, and I’m glad they did. I had a lot of fun brainstorming a ton of ideas.
Surprisingly, I didn’t think about an eaten apple till the 11th sketch. My professor mentioned something about it being more melancholic, and that just stood out to me. So I kept drawing eaten apples instead of the full ones. I liked the angles, the different colors, it just pops nicely to me. But I also don’t enjoy politics myself, I think the reality we live in today is really melancholic. Sometimes as a voter, we may feel meaningless due to the small portion we contribute. Sometimes there are people in power that don’t care about the people but their own party’s agendas (both sides). So, politics to me are not something that always creates positivity, I wanted to keep the eaten apple. So, now I have my main apple (the one on the top of the line, see pictures below). I tried drawing from scratch but I couldn’t get it just right. I eventually just took a picture of a sketch I loved and traced it. I just tried stuff out and didn’t overthink this process. I knew I wanted the lines as shadows though, I just felt, it fit and I liked it. So, I ended up with a cartoonish apple in my own style.
THE BACKGROUND. Gosh, this took the most amount of time. First I wanted a sideways paint slash but the app I use on my iPad didn’t have anything tactile enough. I wanted the paint to look real, with shadows and you could tell the paint was thick on the flat paper. Then I tried Adobe illustrator, no luck. Adobe Photoshop, no luck. Nothing looked 3D! So I went to the store over the weekend, got some cheap paint, canvas and brushes… did not work. I have absolutely no experience in paint, I really should have researched before I got anything, haha! But hey, I spent an hour messing around with paint and got it all over my hands and even on my wall! I did this on my bed by the way, with the plastic bag under everything, surprisingly no paint on my sheets. After washing my hands multiple times, I noticed the soap was like the shiny-ness I wanted, so I added soap to my paint and put it on a canvas, it did change a little, but it was a fun little experiment. The paint was still too flat! I started worrying wether I would be able to think of something else before the deadline for the project. So, I slept on it…
Last class to come up with an idea, and it just popped in my brain “reflection”. Ok, what reflects? Water! I drew a line across the middle so I could make that as the top of the water. I copied my apple, flipped it and I wanted to try taking the color out of it. I started smearing the greyscale apple but it just didn’t look anything like water. I decided to move on and thought, what if I put colors over the apple? Like abstract art? And I liked it. It was really cool, abstract dots and lines over a colorless apple. In the back of my mind I wanted to see what else I could discover, so I kept going. I must have been unconsciously conscious for this part cause I just found a brush and started loosely filling the bottom apple. Now I had the finished product, but I needed contrast, so I tried black lines on a whim. Worked out pretty well, cause I love it!
For a while, I knew I wanted the text to border the outside and highlight some words in red (especially core). A project someone else had from project one (six word memoirs) had text around the border and I really wanted to try it. Plus the bordered text takes up space without taking away from the picture. I did try placing the text in the bottom apple but it was too busy (see picture below). The best part of the text I chose is the name of it, ‘apple myungjo’. It has the word ‘apple’ in it!! And I love the way it looks in my poster as well.
For the critique stage I got a lot of good feedback and it made me feel really good about my poster. I got asked the question “why do you have the line in the middle?” And I didn’t have an answer! I never thought about the significance of it. Or “did you line up the line, ‘n’ and ‘l’ (in the quote) together on purpose?”… no, I never thought of it. It’s amazing how much there is to think about, not just in the way you compose a picture, but the words that are in it. I learned a lot this project and I had a lot of fun. I would definitely do this again to see what else I could come up with.

Today I felt very bleh, like my head was empty. Might be due to the missed sleep the past couple days so I’ll be sure to get to bed on time tonight for real.
For breakfast I had half a totino’s pizza, a pear cup, and a couple oreos. I spent my brief free time playing Neopets games.
The stream went okay. My warmup kinda sucked because I’m trying to figure out a way to do sketches on my sketch sheet then finish those on a new canvas while still retaining the feeling that everything is real loose. For a little bit I was just finishing them as low res thumbnails on the sketch sheet itself but the point of the sheet is to be a collection of incomplete and experimental things. Having completed drawing in it does not sit right with me but taking a sketch and moving it to a new canvas makes it feel more important than it is. The point is to make a little doodle that turned out good enough to post, not a pre-planned successful kind of drawing. Im sure I’ll figure something out. I feel there is a lot I need to improve on with my process and how exactly I color including the actual brush settings. There will be lots of experimenting in my future. Also on stream we finally got to watch more episodes of Rugrats because we watched the movie that ties seasons together this weekend in Discord. We also watching Courage and I’m thinking we will watch 1 episode of each show a day. I only did half commission time today and spent a little more time finishing an emote commission I had.
After stream I did my workout in it’s entirety despite how physically tired I felt. I really had to push through this one but that’s kind of the point isn’t it. I meant to clean up first but I forgot so I cleaned up after my shower. In the shower I was about to ask my friend straight up if I had permission to think about them while I took care of myself but I decided to do it to something else intentionally. I’ve briefly brought this up to them before. I think it’s given that sometimes we jerk off to each other without the other knowing. However I know how she feels about being sexualized and sometimes I can’t help but wonder if she would actually appreciate me thinking about her like that on my own time sometimes. It bothers me enough that I do think it would good to ask permission beforehand or have a brief discussion about it. This might be weird of me but I’m just listening to how I feel. I respect her tremendously and want to exercise expressing that.
For lunch I was excited to make a hearty helping of Rice a Roni with lentils, meatballs, broccoli, green beans, and onions. It turned out okay as usual but I was hoping it came out better. It was still a solid meal. I invested more time into Neopets while it cooked. I’m enjoying some of the minigames.
I feel I did a poor job on today’s request. The whole time I was thinking about how I want to make something I can be proud of but it just wasn’t coming together. It came out okayish but I wanted to do better. Next I spent an hour working on a TOTK pic of my otter and my friend’s sona. I mostly tidied up the sketch and then completely lined it, taking extra care to do a good job so thats why it took so long. After that work was officially over but I wanted to do more so I briefly setup the new horse avatar I got so I can start turning it into my most recent horse sona.
I spent time in my friend’s server where there was a lot of negative talk about one of my other friends about his overly sexual behavior. I felt sort of bad because it was more or less shit talking them behind their back and I was just going along with it. Usually if I talk about him with others, its coming from a place of at least mild affection. Some of this was just mean though.
Tonight I watched my friend give me a sort of rundown of the Neopets website and some of it’s history, I liked listening to her about it. I love hearing her be passionate about anything. After that we hopped on Pony Town for a tiny bit and looked at characters people made before checking out my little house and giving each other horse kisses. I started dinner while she headed up to bed and we chatted a bit.
Today I wasn’t proud of much. Just the usual amount of proud for doing things to the best of my ability. I did well on my workout especially, and doing that little bit of extra avatar work.
For some reason my self perspective was very lacking today. I kinda just wasn’t there, at least not in a great capacity. Looking back there were moments that would have benefitted me being more involved in the present. Spending time with anyone is a good example because it only becomes truly meaningful if I am offering my full attention and appreciation. Tomorrow will be another day to exercise my awareness and put it to good use.
