#this was about What We Devour by Linsey Miller
linseymiller · a year ago
My 2021 fantasy has a title now!
Tumblr media
WHAT WE DEVOUR is about a young woman settling for a safe, nondescript life but wanting more; a noble boy as curious and apathetic as he is dangerous; and the insidious ways in which powerful people can manipulate anything - even the end of the world. It features:
♡ an ace protag made of cunning, kindness, & questionable decisions 👑 a boy as apathetic & curious as he is dangerous 🗡 weird magic in a weird, apocalyptic world 💀 morality, mortality, & fantasy politics 📚 more! sarcastic! mentors!
Anyway, I heard y’all like ace girls, boys with blood on their hands, and weird magic, so I locked them all in a laboratory together and there’s only *gasp* one work table.
I’m kidding. There’s five tables. Several people are locked in there with them, and they’re all making TERRIBLE decisions.

2021 books with aro and ace characters
hello! 2021 just began and i know some people really struggle with finding books with aromantic and asexual representation, so here is a list of 2021 releases i know of that have a character that’s on either spectrum (or on both!). i've decided to include both main/pov characters and some love interests since those also tend to be more major characters. all of these are of course 2021 releases that we don’t know that much about yet, but i’ve taken all of this info from statements by the authors.
main/pov characters:
WHAT WE DEVOUR by Linsey Miller (ace mc)
A BEAUTIFUL DOOM by Laura Pohl (aroace mc, demi mc)
THIS GOLDEN FLAME by Emily Victoria (aroace mc)
THE MARVELOUS by Claire Kann (not yet specified)
WHEN THE NIGHT COMES by Marieke Nijkamp (ace mc)
THE RECKLESS KIND by Carly Heath (ace mc)
THE LITTLE THIEVES by Margaret Owen (demi mc)
THE SECOND REBEL by Linden A. Lewis (sequel to The First Sister; ace mc)
RAVAGE THE DARK by Tara Sim (sequel to Scavenge the Stars; demi mc)
love interests:
MEET CUTE DIARY by Emery Lee (ace li)
DARLING by K. Ancrum (ace li)

Last week’s anon reminded me that there is still an ongoing drama about popular authors putting LGBTQ+ rep in their books (or rather the lack, thereof). So, since my favourite argument about harassing cis het authors for LGBTQ+ content is that, supposedly there aren't any fantasy books/series with gays or rep, here's a list to help your girl wank:
A Hundred Names for Magic by Rin Chupeco [ya]
Empirium by Claire Legrand [ya/na]
Empire of the Vampire by Jay Kristoff [adult]
Hell's Library by A. J. Hackwith [adult]
House of Dragons by Jessica Cluess [ya]
Nightrunner by Lynn Flewelling [adult]
Shadow Frost by Coco Ma [ya]
Silk & Steel by Ariana Nash (psst, everything the  author writes under this penname is gay, just so you know. and she's pretty good with world building and story telling. but it’s ADULT adult.) [adult]
Tales of the High Court by Megan Derr [adult]
The Age of Darkness by Katy Rose Pool [ya]
The Locked Tomb by Tamsyn Muir [adult]
The Never Tilting World by Rin Chupeco [ya]
The Nevernight Chronicles by Jay Kristoff [na]
Primal Sin by Ariana Nash [adult]
Prince's Assassin by Ariana Nash [adult]
A Spindle Splintered by Alix E. Harrow [adult]
Before We Disappear by Shaun David Hutchinson [ya]
Down Comes the Night by Allison Saft [ya]
In Deeper Waters by F.T. Lukens [ya]
Lakesedge by Lyndall Clipstone [ya]
The Binding by Bridget Collins [adult]
The Bone Way by Holly J. Underhill [adult]
The Dead and the Dark by Courtney Gould [ya]
The Witness for the Dead by Katherine Addison [ya]
What We Devour by Linsey Miller [ya]
These are just the ones I own, meaning I either read them already or they are patiently waiting for their turn to be finished.
So the next time someone comes to me complaining, I'll just shoe you out. Because you're being a lazy, whiny brat who is complaining about a problem that is not a real problem. You either need to improve your reading materials or get off your high horse. Preferably do both.
You need to grow up and find the books you like and stop with this “but it’s not trending on tumblr/ig/wherever” mentality. Most of the hyped books/series suck anyway.
Feel free to add more if you know some other books.

31 Days of quietYA: Asexual YA
DWelcome back to the holiday celebration, 31 Days of quietYA! Your mod has been kinda swamped this year, so it might just be posts from me this time around.
I have noticed the post of asexual books I have keeps making the rounds and it’s really out of date. I need to do a full update, but that takes a lot of time, since I have to do a lot of research on the non-YA books I’m not as familiar with. But I am very familiar with the YA books, so I thought I could at least provide y’all with another list of those! All of these books have asexual main characters or love interests. It’s very possible I’ve missed some (and some I left off because they weren’t on Bookshop), but I did my best!
All links are going to and are affiliate links. I make a small commission if you purchase through those links at no extra cost to you. More importantly, you’re supporting indie bookstores across the US (or Britain, since they recently launched there!).

Johnston Dare Mighty Things by Heather Kacynzski No More Heroes by Michelle Kan Let’s Talk About Love by Claire Kann That’s Not What Happened by Kody Keplinger Six Angry Girls by Adrienne Kisner Not Your Sidekick by C. I love hearing this kind of stuff about books! I always want to know what the original titles chosen by the author were
(This is from Linsey Miller’s January newsletter. Transcribed:)
I wrote a fairly good amount of What We Devour back in...2015? Maybe? Back then it alternated between the titles The Hungry Door and Mouth Like Night, Teeth Like Stars, but the general feeling was mostly the same - what was hunger and what did it have to do with power?
Also, I wanted to write about a terrible nerd. Even back then, I knew what I was (Narrator: Trash for nerds).

Other things - Blargh. Oh boy. That... was terrifying? Whew. So, yesterday, went to the bathroom, but was very fluffybrain, i don't remember much of the trip in there, but. Flushed and vaguely heard Sir say something about "be right there" and my body just kinda... moved. Out the bathroom, to the left, into the doorway of the bedroom and... stood there, leaning against the doorway. i couldn't move, i couldn't speak - but i sure could yell at myself in my head! There was... there was nothing. i went through the rigmarole of sticking my tongue out over and over again (i do this when i ‘gray out’, which is not quite blacking out, but everything goes dark and i can’t really move or anything, it’s almost LIKE i blacked out, but i’m still technically conscious, the tongue thing, idk, kickstarts the brain or w/e and gets things going again), managed to scratch at the door a little, not very loud at all, managed to start whispering softly, just breath out of me, "please please please please please please" and eventually i managed to make a little noise. That got Sir in there (finally, i love Him but ADHD distraction i understand, love Him) and, only now, the next day, do i have full control over my voice again. Absolutely wild and absolutely TERRIFYING. Acthar has been ordered. Will arrive Tuesday. Will start it either that friday or saturday, depending on when Sir gets home from His appointment.
Food: A Liquid: A Pain: C Brain: B
Tomorrow: Wash 2 plates/bowls/pieces of silverware, 2 chapters, Dailies, Vamp shiz, 2 anime eps.
Ever Onwards and Upwards!

ARC Review: What We Devour
Tumblr media
SERIES: Standalone
WHAT WE DEVOUR is a dark and twisty, complex YA fantasy.
To be perfectly honest, it took me a few chapters to really get myself immersed in the world Miller has created here. The magic is pretty unique (At least, while I was getting to grips with it, but maybe that’s just me. I spent a couple of chapters sure I wasn’t smart enough to keep up). The ending felt a little rushed and disjointed, but I suspect that’s perhaps because I still hadn’t gotten a full handle on everything that was going on and how the world-building elements all fit together.
I think what I needed was more. A longer book, or even a duology, with more time spent explaining the , the door, its inhabitants and the vile/noble powers; more time with the side characters; and more development of the queen as a threatening presence in Lore’s life.
It was a thrilling ride though and I really enjoyed the reading.
I did love the characters here, especially the protagonist, Lorena. I loved how morally complicated and grey everyone was, and how pragmatic Lorena managed to be while still being entirely self-sacrificing and noble. A truly complex, cunning and well-round heroine with a dark edge. Just what I like to see.
With a cover and premise like WHAT WE DEVOUR has, the thing I really wanted from this book was all the chilling atmosphere and dark vibes. I definitely got that in spades! It’s dark, magical and dangerous, with twists and lurking violence throughout.
Tumblr media
Lorena Adler has a secret—she holds the power of the banished gods, the Noble and the Vile, inside her. She has spent her entire life hiding from the world and her past. She’s content to spend her days as an undertaker in a small town, marry her best friend, Julian, and live an unfulfilling life so long as no one uncovers her true nature.
But when the notoriously bloodthirsty and equally Vile crown prince comes to arrest Julian’s father, he immediately recognizes Lorena for what she is. So she makes a deal—a fair trial for her betrothed’s father in exchange for her service to the crown.
The prince is desperate for her help. He’s spent years trying to repair the weakening Door that holds back the Vile…and he’s losing the battle. As Lorena learns more about the Door and the horrifying price it takes to keep it closed, she’ll have to embrace both parts of herself to survive.
