I love you Hakuoki fanfic. Honestly, after playing Hakuoki I was surprised how little emphasis it generally has on Chizuru's own problems, her and family, and oni lineage in comparison to the drama of her love interests (though I haven't played the Kazama route). And Kaouru being fridged all the time is such an unnecessary cruel way to treat his character. I love how you are writing him!

Knowing that people like my writing (so far) and find the concept interesting really made my day.

Kaoru is, for me, a very interesting character because, 1) I have a weird obsession about twins in fiction, 2) he works as a distorted mirror for both his sister and Okita, 3) he is so incredibly fucked-up by forces beyond his control and the way he lashes out is immensely interesting. I think I have been toying with thoughts about thim for a long time now, a bit too much on my own in my little corner, and now I will explore them in this story. Hopefully for once he will have a kinder fate while I still confront him to some of those forces beyond his control.

I think this apparent lack of interest for Chizuru's own problems might be a result of the original concpet behind Hakuouki. I have read somewhere that the original idea wasn’t to make a romantic otome, but rather a visual novel exploring the main cast of the shinsengumi and their devotion to their ideal. The romantic and supernatural parts came later I believe. Still there is so much to do with Chizuru, her family and her oni identity. If you are interested @impracticaldemon has a very good fic exploring oni politics.
