Poor Dick Musgrove: unfeeling, unprofitable, and dead before the age of twenty. In some ways, he’s a caricature of what Lady Russell feared for Anne, sexually-charged associations and all. But what we learn, from the Musgroves’ sad and somewhat muddled reminiscences, has me thinking of @counterwiddershins‘ description of Persuasion as a magic trick. How does Austen convince us that Anne (self-effacing, always anxious to do the right thing) and Captain Wentworth (flamboyantly successful in a flamboyant profession) are, in fact, well-suited to each other?
Well, in Chapter 6, while poor Anne is still anxiously bracing herself for his advent in the neighborhood and on the page, we learn about his conduct in his first command. And we learn that Frederick Wentworth, determined to succeed as the captain of a frigate, decided that his duties included 1) making sure that the midshipmen paid attention to their lessons in navigation etc. 2) making sure that the midshipmen sent nice letters to their parents. And this from a man who at this point in his life is both orphaned and disappointed in love. I... I’m fine. This is fine. I’m fine.

got told at lunch "you feel like Tumblr Incarnate" and i had to tell them i've been here for 13 years and counting. i was here three years before dashcon happened. i saw the mishapocalypse. i survived the gigapause. i've been here longer than the shoelaces post. i've been here since it was hipsters versus fandom and i played both sides extensively by overdoing the sepia filters on everything and making my own flashing galaxy gif edits for my fandom posts. i'm every tumblr. it's all in me

Persuasion & Italian love-songs
CONCERT TIME.
Anne going up to speak to Wentworth! His making the effort to enter into conversation with her! “[she] felt equal to every thing which she felt right to be done.” Yes Anne! Yes! Make casual conversation with your man in public in a way that narratively mirrors the choice you’ve regretted most for most of your adult life!
Their conversation, of course, is exquisite, but we all know that. Yes, of course it left me delighted, with Wentworth’s near-desperate alternations between breathtaking near-transparency and polite small talk. And Anne goes into the concert convinced of tenderness and love, and then... and then, gentle readers, fellow sufferers, I lost it. Because, a few moments before the interval:
"This," said she, "is nearly the sense, or rather the meaning of the words, for certainly the sense of an Italian love-song must not be talked of.”
Jane Austen, apparently, was not done creating romantic tension. No, she must imply that Anne is sitting in the midst of Bath’s polite society, contemplating the prospect of renewed romantic happiness with the only man she has ever loved, and listening to a song about orgasms. I love this book so much.

my partner doesn’t use pet names nearly as much as i do, which is very funny because i will crack my gay little knuckles and say some shit like “good morning my sun and moon, my loveliest boy, my baby my sweetheart my darling dearest” and he will reply “hello adrian”
