i love when a character is a ghost but in a tragic way instead of a scary way. i love when a character has been dead from the beginning but is still holding on to stay in the narrative. i love when a character could choose to resent the living but ends up loving them instead. i love when a character drives the story but isn’t quite there enough to be at the center of it. i love when the ghosts are the protectors instead of the ones causing the harm. i love when a character is at the heart of the story because depending on where you began it, no matter how you told it, the story is about the ghost who struggled to keep their humanity

Rewatching Hill House for the millionth time, and this time I'm thinking about Steve and Shirley, specifically Steve as Olivia's son and Shirley as Hugh's daughter.
Thinking about Olivia talking about telling stories to honor the dead, and Steve talking about his books as telling other people's stories, keeping the memories of the dead alive. Thinking about the fact they both saw the clock repair ghost, that the two episodes where he shows up are the two that are primarily from their points of view, Witness Marks and Screaming Meemies. Thinking about the Red Room door opening for the both of them, luring them in using their love for the twins. Thinking about how Hill House was Olivia's last architectural project… and Steve's first published book.
Thinking about Hugh's determination to "fix" everything, while Shirley talks about "fixing" the bodies she works on. Thinking about Hugh restoring houses, and Shirley restoring bodies, and the show directly comparing houses to bodies in the dialogue. Thinking about Shirley trying every key she's given to get into the Red Room to no avail, and Hugh trying to open the door with every tool at his disposal, also to no avail. Thinking about Hugh and Olivia dividing their architectural and restoration work so Hugh has the more hands-on, practical role, and Shirley and Kevin dividing their roles in a similar way.
I could keep going on both of these points, just. Yeah, even five years after it dropped, this show still gives me so much to think about.

Theo and Olivia Crain in The Haunting of Hill House | Will and Jonathan Byers in Stranger Things
Queer Characters getting weighted talks from their loved ones who have guessed their queerness and are trying to show that they're a safe person to come to with that will always leave me a melted puddle of emotions.

Haunted Houses And Haunted People – Hugh Crain/Olivia Crain/Leigh Crain/Poppy Hill
A/N: Day 4 of @polyamships Multiamory March.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
^ GIF made for me by @whoreofthecottage
“Sometimes I wonder if the house is finished with us…” Olivia’s voice is a murmur and Leigh glances up with a look close to panic. Hugh and Olivia, her sweet sweet loves, had taken her in after she lost Steve to the house, the thought of either or both going back spiked fear in her heart. “You can’t possibly mean to go back!” “No… no she doesn’t… she doesn’t mean that. It’s only… it’s only that we may have brought one of the ghosts home with us.” Hugh speaks quickly, smoothing a hand against Leigh’s back even as he watches Poppy coo something to Olivia, kissing her hairline tenderly before cupping the woman’s face in her hands where Olivia had been close to fleeing the room. “The… redhead?” Hugh sounds unsure of the woman’s name. “Poppy.” Olivia speaks the name softly. “Is that her name then, Poppy?” Leigh asks, inspecting the photo Hugh points out, her smile soft, voice softer. “She looks… lovely.” “She is.” Olivia’s smile is soft, her touch resting so gently on Poppy’s back that the woman flickers into view, Hugh frowning even as he watches Leigh move to cup a soft cheek in her hand, finally seeing Poppy himself, watching with interest as Leigh smooths a thumb over a cheekbone. “Hello Poppy.” “So… just to be clear… I have my wife…. My younger lover and now… a ghost?” “A beauty.” Leigh speaks softly, firmly. “You have two beautiful women… and… me, I guess.” “Aw sugar, you are a beauty too.” Poppy coos and Leigh smiles, leaning to kiss her gently. “Thank you.” Later, much later, Hugh will come back from checking on his family, Shirley and Theo, the last of their children who live. Nell had, as they all expected, moved away, far away, with Arthur. Finally finding peace. Shirley and Theo stuck close. They felt their missing pieces keenly but Hugh smiles as he watches Olivia rest, Poppy curled around her on one side, Leigh on the other. This, he thinks, he could learn to love the sight of, even if he’s unsure how best to hug a ghost. He will learn, he thinks, he will learn as he had learnt to love Leigh’s brightly sweet nature, as he had learnt to love Olivia and her wilder side. He will learn, he will love and he will live.

TESTIMONIALS
"I think I had a crush on her way before I knew what being gay was"
I mean, you name it. Has five children. Only wears robes in a variety of colours. Suffers from chronic migraines. Comes from a line of "sensitive women" (they all have supernatural abilities). Becomes obsessed by keeping her family together and gets tricked by an evil ghost into trying to kill her family. Becomes an evil ghost herself and still wears robes. Is played by Carla Gugino. SHE WEARS A LOCKET.

thinking about how steven told hill house’s stories despite never really believing them and how jamie kept dani’s memory alive through a story and how she thought it was a ghost story but it was really a love story and how the midnight club found solace in the stories they told each other and how season two was going to have anya star in ilonka’s story and how we really are all just stories in the end

🫀- olivia crain! you're the heart and home of the people who love you. even to the point of destruction.
🔥- luke crain! you would burn yourself and the world down if it meant feeling alive
🍷- shirley crain! people don't always understand you, but you do what needs to be done, and to you that's all the justification you need
✨️ - nell crain! you light up the people you're close to, and no matter how cruel life has been, you persevere.
🔨 - hugh crain! sometimes you burn the candle at both ends, and all you want to do is fix things. even when it's impossible
❤️‍🩹 - theo crain! you're the protector, and you always will be. but you can't protect people you don't let in. unwrap your heart and your walls and you'll see how much love is around you

The Haunting of Hill House (Show) vs The Magnus Archives
Finally started listening to the Magnus Archives this summer, so of course I wanted to see if I could combine its lore with my other favourite horror production of recent times.
The Crain Sibs vs the Avatars
Steven Crain- the Eye
Places a lot of emphasis on visual evidence when conducting his paranormal investigations
"I've never seen a ghost" Has actually seen several, along with many other fucked up things his siblings did not, such as the warning signs of Olivia spiralling.
Placed in the role of protector of the younger four from childhood, expected to watch over them and keep an eye on them, a duty that never goes away
Come on, you can't tell me that if this guy met Jonathan, especially in the first season, they wouldn't get along.
Shirley Crain-Harris- the Corruption
Bugs feature most prominently in her episode, which features an actual wasp nest
Her kittens all end up being diseased, in effect corrupted before they have a chance
Her literal job is to paint over dead bodies so they're more palatable to look at, while fully knowing the rot beneath, which she is paid to conceal, but can't escape from herself
Theodora Crain- the Eye
Technically has touch-based powers, not sight-based, but her powers come with an immense burden of secret knowledge, Knowing things she shouldn't know
Can't shake hands with someone without getting a front row seat to the worst things they've ever done
Literally Saw her mother as a dead body long before it actually happened, and was terrified by it
Luke Crain- the Lonely
Everyone, the viewer included, thinks his childhood best friend is imaginary.
He's often seen playing alone in the flashbacks, and faces his encounter with William Hill's ghost entirely alone as well
His one friend as an adult ends up betraying him and leaving him alone- making genuine, non-familial connections seems to be an ongoing struggle.
Nell Crain-Vance- the End
Was literally haunted by her own death for twenty-six years and didn't know until it was too late
Her adult self doesn't appear in the second half of the show, except as a ghost
Is tricked into walking- or falling- into her own death by the promise of reuniting with those she's already lost- death is a constant presence for her.
Bonus: Olivia Crain- the Spiral
The more time she spends in Hill House, the more she loses her grip on reality
She's effectively lured into this by Poppy, similar to how Michael and Helen were
Ends up bound to the house, a twisted corruption of her best qualities, no longer able to really know what's best for her family

the thing about the haunting of hill house (2018) that makes the show so excellent is its choice to characterize the house as a predator (hungry, cavernous, vicious, will lash out if provoked, slightly sentient but not self-aware) and its dead occupants as the true horrors. even then, the majority of the ghosts in the house aren't evil or malicious, just trapped. they're people who have forgotten how to be people. the little boy in the wheelchair bangs on the walls not to frighten shirley & theo but because he did it while he was alive. hazel hill calls for clara dudley through the phone not to scare luke but because she's seeking out the caretaker she remembers from life. william hill enters the twins' room in the dead of night simply because he wants his hat back. the exception to this is of course poppy hill, who actively manipulates and confuses an already unstable olivia in an attempt to get her to murder her children, but even poppy is just a trapped specter perpetually acting out the violent and cruel impulses she had when she was alive.
the house itself devours people, but that's just what predators at the top of the food chain do—poppy, and olivia after she dies, are the real horrors because they are self-aware and actively choose to damn other people alongside them.
