"To say that Thomas Boleyn and his children after him set out to be courtiers is, therefore, to say a great deal; they were taking the road to power, prestige and profit. Whether it was the road of honour is a different question, and most historians have felt that Anne's father personified all that was bad about the court. P.W. Sergeant's verdict that 'it is clearly hopeless to attempt a defence of Sir Thomas' may seem totally justified in case of a man who, on his way to an earldom, slipped, or appears to have slipped, two daughters in succession into the king's bed. Friedmann's judgement, 'mean and grasping', is certainly correct." Ives, E. 2004. The Life and Death of Anne Boleyn: 'The Most Happy'

Twice married for reasons of political convenience, twice widowed by the age of twenty-four and keenly aware of the special status and dignity she [Margaret of Austria] enjoyed as a single woman, she wore a widow’s coif to signal her independence from men, choosing as a motto Fortune Infortune Fort Une (‘Changes in fortune make a woman stronger’). Another motto she took from the old Dukes of Burgundy: Groigne qui groigne et vive Burgoigne (‘Grudge if you like, and long live Burgundy’)

We have some very exciting news to share. A suite of rooms on the first floor of the Castle are currently being re-interpreted with Tudor artefacts and furnishings and will be known as the Boleyn Apartment.
The Boleyn Apartment will be the only surviving suite of rooms in the world that the Boleyn family definitely occupied
Rooms in other houses lived in by the Boleyn family, in the UK and Europe, have either been destroyed or modified beyond their recognition. Therefore, at Hever Castle you will have the unique chance to walk in the footsteps of Anne Boleyn and her family.
The grand unveiling of the Boleyn Apartment will be on Monday 25th March.
Head to our website for further information.

For example, in the period 1519 — 23 Thomas Boleyn was successively Henry VIII’s ambassador to the court of France, in attendance at both the Field of Cloth of Gold and the subsequent meeting with the emperor Charles V at Gravelines, a participant in the Calais conference of 1521 (which also involved a short mission to the emperor) and finally ambassador to Spain. He clearly had the flair for diplomacy as well as the languages; Henry was to say in 1530 that there was no skilled negotiator to equal him.

Anne's safe arrival, and the good impression she swiftly made, were confirmed in a letter from Margaret to Thomas Boleyn. She wrote the girl was 'very welcome to me'. Margaret hoped: '...to treat her in such a fashion that you will have reason to be content with it; at least be sure that until your return there need be no other intermediary between you and me than she; and I find her of such good address and so pleasing in her youthful age that I am more beholden to you for having sent her to me than you are to me.' It was an excellent start for the intelligent, personable young girl, who found herself admitted to a court of the highest standards. The place, along with Margaret's character and accomplishments, were to provide Anne with a standard that would shape her character and set her aspirations high.

At Edward's christening in October 1537, the Lady Elizabeth, no longer Princess Elizabeth, was at the ceremony as well. But we don't know if she greeted her grandfather or if she recognised him. And it's very probable that he was just a man in the crowd. This was going to be pretty much the last time she ever saw him.

Ah, family picture. Isn’t that nice? Forgive how messy the sketch is.
I made Mary so nervous in this 😭 Honestly I would be too if Thomas was holding my shoulder like that-

Fun Fact; Anne was a mama’s girl. Was. Elizabeth was a good and actually loving mother to her children until she decided to dip. Being married to Thomas was probably the worst mistake she ever made.
