@nasajpl: As part of the kickoff for Lightyear, @chrisevans visited @nasa JPL and interviewed @astromarshburn, who consulted on the movie, as well as members aboard the @iss. During their interview, Chris asked Tom Marshburn about what it's like to see Earth from space and @astro_watkins mentioned the hardest part of adjusting to work in zero gravity. Chris also spoke with Suzy Dodd, project manager for Voyager. She talked about the images that will be released from @nasawebb, which will give us more insight into the mysteries of our universe. Chris ended his interviews with a little souvenir - a @nasaartemis boarding pass that will travel on the uncrewed Artemis I mission to the Moon.

Halloween Aboard the International Space Station
In the vast, dark expanse of space, far from ghouls, goblins, or trick-or-treaters, astronauts aboard the International Space Station (ISS) find their way to celebrate Halloween. Despite the absence of traditional festivities, they come together to embrace the Halloween spirit uniquely, often crafting spooky and creative costumes from the resources available on the station.

Marshburn, Kayla S. Barron, and Matthias J. Maurer of the European Space Agency (ESA) - were all set for some mysterious Halloween celebrations aboard the ISS. However, their super-secret plans to mark the occasion were delayed due to inclement weather at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida, pushing back their launch to November 11. Undeterred by this setback, the Expedition 66 crewmembers already on the space station prepared to celebrate Halloween.

ESA astronaut Thomas G. Pesquet shared their extraterrestrial Halloween festivities on social media. He teased, "Strange things were happening on the ISS for Halloween. Aki rising from the dead (or is it from our observation window?)," about fellow crew member Akihiko Hoshide of the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency.

Continuing the Space Spookiness
While Halloween on the ISS may lack the earthly traditions of costume parties and candy, it's clear that astronauts know how to make the most of the occasion. The unique setting and shared experiences of life in space bring an extra layer of creativity and excitement to these out-of-this-world celebrations.   Sources: THX News & NASA. Read the full article

US-Russia tensions arrive in space
Fernando Valduga By Fernando Valduga 02/2622 - 19:20 in Space
Russia's invasion of Ukraine raised a question mark about the future of the International Space Station, long a symbol of post-Cold War cooperation, where astronauts and cosmonauts proudly live and work side by side.
The outpost was the target of a threatening topic on Twitter by the head of the Russian space agency Roscosmos, Dmitry Rogozin, who warned on Thursday that U.S. sanctions could "destroy our cooperation" and said that the research platform would fall to Earth without the help of his country.
Biden also stated that the sanctions "will degrade the aerospace industry (Russia), including its space program".
In response, Rogozin said on Twitter: "If you block cooperation with us, who will save the ISS from an uncontrolled exit and fall in the United States or Europe?"
Tumblr media
Translation by Google:
Alzheimer's. Just in case. To prevent your sanctions from falling on your head. And not only in a figurative sense.
Therefore, for the time being, as a partner, I suggest that you do not behave like an irresponsible gamer, disavow the statement about "Alzheimer's sanctions". Friendly advice
He added: There is also the option of launching a 500-ton structure for India and China. Do you want to threaten them with such a perspective? The ISS does not fly over Russia, so all the risks are its own. Are you ready for them?"
Rogozin also mentioned that the location and orbit of the ISS in space are controlled by "Russian Progress MS cargo ships".
Experts see these threats as inflated political rhetoric, given the dependence of both sides on each other for the safety of their people. But it could accelerate a long-awaited divorce in his fragile marriage.
"No one wants to endanger the lives of astronauts and cosmonauts through political maneuvers," said John Logsdon, professor and space analyst at George Washington University.
"It was a very conscious decision when Russia was brought into the station's partnership in 1994 to make the station interdependent," he added - a decision made at the time with cost and speed concerns in mind.
The ISS, a collaboration between the US, Canada, Japan, the European Space Agency and Russia, is divided into two sections: the US orbital segment and the Russian orbital segment.
Tumblr media
Currently, the ISS depends on a Russian propulsion system to maintain its orbit, about 400 kilometers above sea level, with the US segment responsible for electricity and life support systems.
Rogozin referred to this co-dependence in a series of hostile tweets posted shortly after U.S. President Joe Biden announced sanctions against Russia's aerospace industry.
“If you block cooperation with us, who will save the ISS from wildly desorbiting and falling to American or European territory?” said Rogozin - noting that the station does not fly over much of Russia.
NASA, for its part, responded with a mild statement emphasizing that it “continues to work with all our international partners, including State Space Corporation Roscosmos, for the ongoing safe operations of the International Space Station”.
Julie Patarin-Jossec, a French academic and author of a book on the ISS, said Rogozin “is a political figure, known for being very loyal to power” and has a history of making fiery statements.
Tumblr media
Those on board the station - Russians Anton Shkaplerov and Pyotr Dubrov, Americans Raja Chari, Thomas Marshburn and Kayla Barron and German Matthias Maurer - are highly trained professionals and will probably not be affected, she said.
“Most astronauts of recent decades, or who have had experience in the ISS, are very attached to international cooperation,” Patarin-Jossec said.
In addition, she added, the withdrawal of the ISS program would leave Russia without a manned space program - unless it quickly works with China aboard the Tiangong space station, which is still under construction and currently hosts three crew members.
Long-standing cooperation
US-Russia cooperation has a long history dating back to the height of the Cold War, but it was not without flows and ebbs.
After the United States placed the first men on the Moon in 1969, then-President Richard Nixon sought opportunities to make the space program more cooperative, inviting allies to participate in the Space Shuttle program.
“At the same time, he and Henry Kissinger decided to use a possible joint US-Soviet mission as a symbol of detente,” Logsdon explained.
This led to the historic Apollo-Soyuz mission of 1975, when U.S. and Russian spacecraft first docked in a globally televised event.
The partnership was supposed to expand further, with possible space shuttle missions to a Russian space station, but President Jimmy Carter vetoed these plans after the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan.
It was not until the collapse of the Soviet Union that Russian authorities contacted Bill Clinton's administration about the idea of a merger, which paved the way for the launch of the first ISS module in 1998.
Tumblr media
The ISS faced geopolitical storms in the past - most notably the Russian invasion of Crimea in 2014 - but the current tensions, which Logsdon said were the most serious since the Cuban missile crisis, may mark the beginning of the end.
Space observer Jonathan McDowell of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics noted that the U.S. is already developing propulsion capacity using Northrop Grumman's Cygnus cargo ships.
NASA currently wants the station to orbit until 2030, while Russia has not committed itself beyond 2024.
"I think that unless the current situation is resolved quickly, it may affect the Russian desire to remain involved or the US desire to keep them involved," Logsdon said.

Russian commander handing over "key" to NASA astronaut
Very  nice ceremony on ISS right now with Russian commander Anton Shkaplerov  handing over "key" to NASA astronaut Thomas Marshburn. "On orbit we are  one crew. ISS is a symbol of friendship, a symbol of the future of  exploration of space."
Jupiter (honorable, tolerance, demonstrative, future, grace, higher mind, hope) quincunx Praamzius (negotiations, treaties, humanitarian efforts and organizations, friends).
*first object to receive a name from Lithuanian lore, the god of time, sky, peace and friendship.
Tumblr media
The interactions seemed 100 percent genuine and friendly. Shkaplerov only briefly referenced Earth-bound tensions, but said on orbit they were “space brothers and space sisters.” It gives me some hope for the future.
NASA, almost certainly, will not cut ISS ties with Russia. It would be akin to violating an international treaty, and NASA won't take the first step. https://twitter.com/SciGuySpace/status/1508978238894354433
It's worth noting there was absolutely zero Russian war propaganda to be seen in the Soyuz landing zone, or in Moscow Mission Control. I'd take this as further evidence that Russia would like to continue the ISS partnership. https://twitter.com/SciGuySpace/status/1509143288976220174

NASA hands over control of ISS to Russia after they threatened to crash it into Earth | Science | News
NASA astronauts have handed over the metaphorical (and ceremonial) keys to the ISS to Russian cosmonauts, as they prepare for their descent back to Earth, leaving Russia in charge. NASA astronaut Thomas Marshburn ceded over to cosmonaut Oleg Artemyev yesterday as the four astronauts who were part of SpaceX’s Crew-3 mission prepared for the return. Mr Marshburn said during a webcast: “I think the…
