Accattivante autobiografia scritta da un personaggio estremamente particolare. Coltissimo e relativamente povero, in nostro De Quincey inizia a consumare regolarmente oppio, ai tempi venduto legalmente in farmacia, all'inizio con moderazione fino ad arrivare ad un abuso smodato, il cui la su stessa psiche arriva ad essere compromessa da una serie di allucinazioni oniriche. Decide dunque di raccontare la sua vita, i passaggi che l'hanno portato a diventare consumatore abituale di questa sostanza cercando di capire, da un lato, come agisce e, dall'altro, i motivi che ne hanno innescato una cosi' forte dipendenza. Postdated; October 1822. In this exceptional letter to his publisher James Hessey of Taylor and Hessey, De Quincey writes despairingly of his addiction to #opium and its effect on his writing. He begins, DE QUINCEY Having promised you the Preface I continued to write it uninterruptedly until I literally could not write (in any sense of the word; i.e. could neither think, nor sit up to hold a pen). He adds, All that I have hitherto sent might have been written in one hour, if I had been as well as I have been in former periods of my life or as you and most men are at every moment. . . . I never know at present for a minute that tranquillity which you and most men know constantly: and well convinced I am that most men in my situation would have committed suicide long ago. De Quincey then confesses that he was forced to take more opium to be able to resume work: I was obliged to take an enormous quant [ity] . of laud [anum] to write at all. this disordered me much' tho' to say that it made me worse, or that a worse for me than me hourly lie is almost supposable would be a kind of self-deception. . . .
