Laughter filled the halls. Sophie smiled to herself. She heard her husband playfully yelling, “I’m going to get you.” Eugenia and Barbara screamed with laughter. Quietly, Sophie walked to the drawing room. Eugenia, five years old, was on her father’s shoulder, gripping his hair to the point it looked painful, but the smile on Gideon’s face suggested otherwise. Barbara, seven years old, was jumping up and down asking her father to carry her. Her baby boy, Thomas, two years old, was observing them quietly while sitting on the floor. He had a smile on his face. After a few moments, Thomas notices Sophie. He gets up and runs to Sophie, “Mama!”
She bends down and scoops him into her arms. She looks over at Gideon who smiles at her. She returns the smile. Everything was perfect, her family was happy and healthy. Alas, perfect doesn't last for long.
Laugher no longer filled the halls. She remembers the day Barbara died. Demons attacking in the middle of the day. One scratch and no cure ended the life of her first-born child. She remembers how she collapsed into Gideon’s strong arms when they learned of the news. Her tears wouldn't stop coming, but she knew she had to be strong for Thomas and Eugenia. They will need her once they hear the news. Her baby girl died twenty-three years ago, but there isn't a day that goes by that Sophie doesn't think of her.
Her mind then drifts to Eugenia, her loud month strong daughter. Always fighting for what she believed in. Fighting for those she loves. Her flighting ways and the love she had for others is what cost her life. Sophie remembers how her, and Gideon rushed to the Institute when they heard of what happened. The year was 1915, Eugenia was on patrol with Alastair and Kamala. The demon was apparently approaching Kamala and Eugenia pushed her out of the way. The demon had injured Eugenia badly, by the time they got to the Institute she was already gone. Sophie and Gideon wanted to see her though. Blood covered every part of her skin and gear. Sophie didn’t know how to react, but Gideon collapsed to the floor, sobbing. They have lost another child. There was barely a life without Barbara, now they must continue with their life without Eugenia.
Four years passed since Eugenia had died and Gideon had gotten sick. He was sick with the Spanish Flu, the Silent Brother did what they could, but within a matter of days he passed away. Sophie felt numb. Her husband, her best friend, the person she loved most dearly in this world is now gone. At the same time, she envied him, he would be reunited with their daughters and that he didn't have to witness the death of their son.
It was 1925, six years since Gideon died. Thomas had gotten sick; the sickness was similar to the ones he had as a child. Alastair for the first few days took care of him till he had fallen ill too. Weeks and weeks passed; both fell more ill by the minute. The silent brothers had advised their family and friends to say goodbye. That night, when Sophie kissed her son goodbye, he and Alastair had passed away within minutes of each other. When Sophie learned of the news, she wished that she was dead herself because the laughter of her household never returned.
Years had passed since her loved ones had passed on. Fourteen years, that’s how long it took before she was reunited with them. Fourteen years of loneliness and nothing, but pain. Unlike the rest of her family, Sophie was the only one to die peacefully. On the day of her and Gideon’s anniversary she had closed her eyes and passed away in her sleep. When she opens her eyes, she doesn’t recognize where she was. She does her a voice calling her name, “Sophie, Sophie, Sophie.”
That voice, she hasn't heard that voice in twenty years, “Sophie, eres tú...?”
