We’ll Meet Again
Part ? of ???
The first bit written of a very elaborate urban fantasy mystery story that uh also happens to be a Hetalia x Mercy Thompson/Alpha and Omega (Patricia Briggs) Crossover. Disclaimer: I own nothing. Im playing with toys in a sandbox and if you wish to share in the story thats all g by me. Read on AO3 Old friends in New Places: In which a Wolf finds like folk and Bran finds that Asil is Omega Catnip. Or something like that.
The scent had finally faded and the wolf whined with loss.  He had known it was a long shot. What had he expected following a half remembered scent that he had encountered half a continent away several months ago.  Perhaps expected was the wrong word.  Hoped was better.  He had hoped that the pair he‘d encountered who had smelled equally of wolf and human could help.  And that they would.  But now all was lost. The scent had finally given up the ghost.  Bereft there was only one thing to do.  Complain.  Loudly.
But before he could let loose his sorrows to the skies, a chorus of howls rang out through the night and then faded away leaving him with trailing echos.  The wolf stood perfectly still.  Had he imagined it?  No.  No he had not, he realized and his tail started wagging in joy as the howls started up again.
Well then.  He didn’t know how far away they were, farther than he could travel in a night by the sounds of it, nor did he know if the other wolves were normal or more like him and those he’d been trying to find. But… it didn’t matter, he rationalized as he plunged through the underbrush.  He’d done sillier and stupider things in the past with much less to go on.
This is a line break
"Bran, have you seen Sam?  One of the kids got into something and it’s left a funny rash."
"When you say kids do you mean the kid kids or one of the new wolves?" Bran asked, looking up from the book he’d been reading. "Actually, why would I have seen Samuel?  He left to go bother Mercy yesterday."
"Uh, human actually.  In a twist of irony, I’m talking about the new vet.  Are you sure that Sam’s not here?”
"Yes.  What’s going on?"
Tad looked incredibly confused. "I could have sworn that I saw Samuel sleeping on Charles and Anna’s porch this morning."
"Why on earth would he do that?  He has a key, but they’re not in town either.  They’re handling the Seattle conference for me.  I thought they had given Samuel a ride.” Bran mused as he closed his eyes and reached out within the pack senses.  The pack was mostly content, some still tired and slightly sore from the run last night, he might have to go easier on the newer wolves next time, faint confusion from the wolf in front of him, sparkles of good natured delight and companionable grumbling from several different folks in town.  He stretched his senses slightly further.  There were Charles and Anna, his muted discontent, pride and joy and her exhilarated fear, excitement, and happiness.  Most likely Charles was trying to do something to impress her, possibly fancy tricks with the plane.  But no Samuel near them.
Instead Samuel seemed to be happy and content, mixed with a little longing, and some mild exasperation very close to a veritable knot of conflicting emotion of uneasiness, respect, mild annoyance and love.  Ah.  He was very familiar with that particular tangle of emotions.  Adam Hauptman.   With Mercy somewhere in the vicinity probably.  None of them anywhere near Aspen Creek.
So what was… a sudden spike of alarm that split turning into terrified concern and mildly angry befuddlement had him falling out of the pack sense and into himself as Sage came tearing down the hall catching herself on Tad at the last second "Bran what the hell is wrong with Samuel?"
"Absolutely nothing as far as I know.  He’s with Mercy”
Sage paled. "Then Who the fuck just ambushed Asil?"
"What?!“ Bran stood, shoving his chair back before striding out the door. Tad and Sage following closely behind, Sage still talking.
"I don’t know!!!  A large white wolf, looks exactly like Samuel, doesn’t smell like anything, tackled Asil into the middle of Main Street and then tore off into the woods."
"The witch?“ Bran murmured, very confused.   But no that wasn’t possible.  Anna had killed her when he, Charles and Asil had been ensnared by her powers.  And then they had burned the body.  And according to Asil she had been the last of her coven, several hundred years ago.  Though that didn’t necessarily mean she had not taught anyone else during that time.  If this was revenge it did make sense that it had taken whoever this was a little while to track the pack down.  He reached into the pack sense again, easily locating the knot of exhaustion and grumpiness that he normally associated with Asil.  That was as present as it ever was but there was none of the resignation or bone deep terror that Bran expected.  Instead, all he got was surprise, a little bit of anger, and even more confusingly peace and playfulness.  So, probably not the witch nor a member of her coven if she had even had one. He let out a breath that he hadnt realized he was holding. Well that was something to be thankful for at least. There was no apparent danger other than the obvious of a strange wolf running around in his territory but that was easily dealt with.  Asil wasn’t too far away, somewhere in the woods behind the house and Bran turned to the two following him.  "Other than bothering Asil, you said the stranger was friendly?"
Tad shrugged while Sage frowned, and Tad spoke.  "Ive not interacted with him at all, just mistook him for Sam at a distance"
“Sage?” Bran asked as he wandered out the back door, barefoot.  He wasn’t in quite as much of a rush, but stopping for shoes was still a hassle he didn’t want to deal with.
She sighed and followed him across the yard. “Friendly enough, I suppose.  He completely ignored me, just ambushed us on the way to the hothouse, bowled over Asil, bowed in play, and then took off towards the woods the minute Asil got up.”
“Well, we’ll find out if this stranger means harm soon enough.  Keep your senses sharp, they’re around here somewhere.” Bran said as they moved through the trees.
In actuality it didn’t take too long to track the pair down.  The sounds of a scuffle and mock growls led the trio to a clearing that was often used as a starting point for the full moon runs.  Which made it a very good spot for an ambush.  A quick couple of hand signs had Sage and Tad drawing back ever so slightly and Bran drew his presence into himself as he snagged a seat on one of the fallen logs near the clearing’s edge.
The first thing he noticed was that it didn’t seem to have worked completely.  The ear twitch and slight pause in movement were pretty clear indicators of that, but the wolf never turned to look at him and instead kept their attention on Asil who kept the game of… keep away, it seemed, going.  The second thing Bran noticed was that Asil was still human.  He wasn’t entirely sure why, it could have been due to a need to keep the game even, a desire to talk, a need to not kill the intruder, anything really but for some reason this was important.  Third, Bran could see why the others had mistaken this wolf for his son.  The stranger, whomever they were, was a huge pure white wolf.  It would be one hell of a coincidence if they had blue eyes as well, although Bran personally thought that if that were the case there was more likely some sort of magic at play.  A heavy thud drew his attention back to the clearing and Bran winced reflexively as the wolf finally knocked Asil down.  Yet instead of going for the throat to end their mock battle the wolf instead scrambled atop Asil, taking advantage of the prone position to wrestle the branch from his hand and flop down, eyes closed and tail awag.
There was a moment of stunned silence that Bran used to get his first good look at the other wolf.   From this close it was obvious that this wasn’t Samuel.  While neither of them had markings of any sort, the strange wolf was somehow a different shade of white than his son.  There was also the concerning fact that this new wolf was on the skinny side for someone their size and their coat was a bit thin for this early in the year.  If he had to guess, the wolf had had a few very harsh winters and was teetering on the edge of starvation.  Still the blindingly white fur wasn’t patchy or matted and they clearly had retained enough sense to self to play. The silence occasionally punctured by heavy breaths was eventually broken by a soft huff of laughter from Asil as he caught his breath. "All right Amigo, you win.”
The wagging of the tail grew more pronounced and Bran got to his feet.
“Nice fight.” He said and the tail stopped moving, and the wolf atop Asil shifted ever so slightly and Bran found himself staring into a pair of bright crimson eyes.  Well.  Not a doppelgänger at all.  An albino wolf.  That was unusual.  Hopefully it was strange enough to make the other easy to identify and figure out why they were here.  Still, the wolf wasn’t backing down and Bran didn’t look away.  He was not going to let some strange wolf play dominance games on his turf.  It was as easy as breathing to bring that part of himself to the forefront and he absently noticed the tension rising in his other wolves but if anything the stranger looked even less impressed than before and to Bran‘s astonishment they yawned in his face before turning to look down at Asil with an expression that could only be described as “Can you believe this nonsense?”
Bran blinked, stupefied, then snorted, carefully scenting the air.  For some reason he was only picking up scents of his own pack and the forest itself.  Still the behavior was enough of a clue "Only you, Asil.” He said ruefully, picking his way through the clearing to stand at the pair‘s side. "Only you"
Asil and the strange wolf traded looks, before Asil voiced what they were clearly both thinking. "And what is that supposed to mean?"
“Through all my years I’ve met a few omegas, but somehow I have only ever met them one at a time. And here you are somehow befriending 3 separate omega werewolves.” He extended his hand to help Asil up as the wolf atop him cocked his head at him.
"He’s an Omega?  Really?" Asil shook his head as he stood and looked down at the other wolf.  "Did you know that?" he asked and the wolf shook his head.
Bran huffed in pretend disappointment.  He shouldn’t have been surprised as he was.   Anna hadn’t known anything either and he doubted the Austrian Omega that he had heard about knew much more.  "Well, we should probably fill you in on that in addition to whatever it is you’re here for.  Speaking of, Asil are you going to introduce us?"
The pair traded another look and Asil shrugged. "If I could, I would.”
Bran looked at Asil and then down at the wolf “You don’t know who this is?”
Asil made a so so gesture with his hand the other going to rest on the Wolf’s head.  "We’ve met, I think?  There was a battlefield?  We fought." He added with certainty.  "And…" He blinked then looked down at the wolf, watching as he spoke very hesitantly  "There was a eagle?"   The wolf perked up at this but Asil shook his head.  “Lo siento, amigo. That’s all.  I know I know you.  Your scent is familiar but it is not quite… I know I know it, yet…” he trailed off then asked  “Were you a wolf when we met?”
There was a considering silence, as the wolf cocked his head very obviously thinking it over and then gave a very human shrug.
Asil looked at Bran “I have no idea what that means.”
“Another thing to figure out, I suppose.” Bran said as he looked down at the wolf. “Well if Asil doesn’t know your name to introduce you, mind introducing yourself?”
The wolf blinked, stepped forward to nose at his hand then very pointedly looked into the forest.
“All right, that’s fair enough I suppose.” Bran said crouching down and offering a hand, gesturing with the other. “I’m Bran, the alpha of the Aspen Creek pack. You obviously know Asil,” Bran smiled as the new wolf cursorily sniffed his hand then turned to face the new arrivals. “And that’s Tad and Sage”
Another perfunctory sniff, barely enough to get a measure of their scents by Bran’s reckoning but that didn’t stop Sage who stepped closer.  “Hi!” She said cheerfully, hand outstretched, and this time the wolf gave her a dubious look but did indeed take a deeper sniff.  “I'm Sage Carhardt, but I think you caught that.  And you’re the second omega werewolf to wander by in the past few years.   Seriously Asil, are you catnip or something for Omegas?  This is a bit silly at this point.” She said with a smile and good natured teasing.
Asil for his part shrugged. “It may have to do with the fact that I treat them as capable people rather than putting them on a different pedestal than anyone else.”
“We don’t do that.“ Sage protested, and Asil raised an eyebrow and the wolf huffed.
"There are few enough Omegas that most do.  Still I don’t know why he came to me, and we won’t unless he decides to tell us himself"
All four people in the clearing turned to look at the wolf next to Asil.
"He does have a point" Bran said, "We can’t help unless you give us something to work with.  Do you mind introducing yourself now?"
The wolf snorted then got up and pulled away from the group slightly, which spoke well for their state of mind.  Shifting was not a painless process and hurt werewolves tended to lash out.
It would possibly also help if they all were not staring at the changing stranger.  Turned slightly, to give the appearance that they were instead watching the forest, as some sort of guard, Bran kept his other senses attuned to the new wolf.  Based on the sound, the shift was going as smoothly as a shift ever went when one’s entire skeletal and musculature were undergoing a radical transformation, when a rising scent caught his attention and by the audio clues things started to go horribly wrong.   Unable to help himself, Bran turned hoping that there would be something he could do to ease whatever was going on only to end up staring in horror.
The wolf had barely reached the midpoint in his shift, hunched over but mostly standing on two legs, shoulders broad, arms too long for his frame with wicked albeit useless claws capping his fingers and drool dripping from a mouth full of fangs looking every part the stereotypical Hollywood monster when Bran found himself growling.  He frowned, unable to stop himself and poked at the feelings.  Frustration, exhaustion, desperation and determination had him on edge along with a growing horror and resigned terror that he was still trapped.  The stranger absolutely was an omega werewolf, projecting as he was, and a fairly old one too, Bran realized.  Anna, while powerful and talented didn’t quite have the control needed to project as clearly as this stranger did.
As Bran and Asil watched, the wolf tried again, straining with all his might against the magic that allowed the shift.   The sound in the clearing stopped suddenly and Bran felt foreign hope that maybe this time he had gotten it when the scent of a new wolfs first moon change abruptly flooded the clearing and the sounds of the shift abruptly resumed and the hulking monstrosity fell back into a more familiar lupine shape.  The woods were silent save the sounds of heavy breathing and a few very hesitant bird calls, just on the edge of his hearing range. Bran blinked and turned to stare at the mystery that had brought himself to his doorstep. The strange wolf met his eyes evenly as he laid there panting, reeking of magic, exhaustion and desperation and Bran was once again sent reeling by the projected emotions. A quick glance at the others showed that he was not the only one. All of his wolves in the clearing were.
“Well.“ Bran said, shaking himself slightly, as if that would dislodge the projected emotions, but more so to bring his own under control. "I see now why you were not too keen on introducing yourself.  Does that happen every time you try to change?"
He was entirely unsurprised to receive a nod in response.  "All right.   Well, come along then." Bran said moving back towards his house.  He kept talking, slightly relishing in the surprise he could feel from behind him.  "Let’s get you fed and we'll see what we can do about getting your… Curse? Taken care of.  I’ll make some calls, but just so I have an idea of where to start, did you happen to piss off any witches recently?"

Canyon Creek Lakes and Boulder Creek Lakes (2/3)
When I hiked up to the Canyon Creek Lakes last summer, I'd intended to spend my second night at the Boulder Creek Lakes, but it was unclear from what I could find and read online what the trail up to the Boulder Creek cirque was like, so I had a spot further down the Canyon Creek drainage in mind as a backup plan. This turned out to be good, because although I did manage to make my way up to the Boulder Creek Lakes, it was a harder climb than I'd anticipated, and about two-thirds of the way up I slipped and fell while crossing a creeklet and banged both forearms and both shins pretty bad (I have some small permanent scars on all four now).
I made it up to the cirque and was stunned by how beautiful it was up there, but due to the heat and my injuries I wasn't really in a mood to camp up that high and that far away from the car, so I climbed back down same day and hiked downhill to a nice pine barren closer to the trailhead, then finished my trip easily the next morning. But, when this summer finally came around, I prioritized getting up to the Boulder Creek Lakes to camp as soon as possible: as it turned out, this was during the second day of Lindsey and I's trip to the Trinities.
We woke up on the second morning to find the wind had worn itself out during the night and thus both lakes were still as glass. The previous day, I'd thought the view from the granite dam between the lakes couldn't get more beautiful, but I realized I was wrong.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
While we were eating breakfast and packing up, a super-friendly hiker and his super-friendly dog ("Summit") hiked past our camp and we all chatted for a few minutes, then we watched as the pair climbed up above us and to our right on the granite slabs east of Thompson Peak, in search of L and Mirror Lakes.
We were not quite as adventurous as all that. After a luxuriously slow start to the day, we packed up and headed back the way we'd come from.
There's actually not a whole lot of story to tell about the hike on this second day. Most of the mileage is simply descending back through places you ascended through the previous day to get to the Canyon Creek Lakes. Don't get me wrong, this is some of the most beautiful country I've ever hiked through, but I covered the details already in my last post, so...
Tumblr media
After a few miles of descent, we took a right turn onto the trail to Boulder Creek Lakes. This trail almost immediately crosses Boulder Creek proper, and though this creek was not nearly as deep or as fast as Canyon Creek at the point we'd had to cross it the previous night and then again earlier that morning, it was wide and cold, which necessitated us taking off our boots and fording it. After that, it's just straight-up climbing until you get to the Boulder Creek cirque.
As I hinted at earlier, this is a pretty difficult climb, made much more difficult by the degree to which the trail is overgrown by brush. I've realized over the last two years that this is sort of a hallmark of climbing in the Trinities: one of the things I love so much about the area is its (relative) wildness compared to other, more trafficked and thus more maintained and managed wilderness areas. Sometimes, though, this can be a liability, too: unmaintained trails that suddenly disappear for a mile, blowdown for miles with no end in sight, entire miles of trail consumed by brush, and so on. These sorts of setbacks kind of come with the territory of travel through "wild" places like the Alps, but that doesn't mean that struggling uphill through thick brush on trails like the Boulder Creek Lakes Trail, the Big Bear Lake Trail, and the Sawtooth Traverse isn't frustrating.
That said, the views of the cirque and the cliffs below it opening up the higher we climbed certainly helped as motivation.
Tumblr media
At just about the point when the heat and the frustration of pushing on through the brush became too much, we topped out (funny how that works). From here, the trail traverses along the eastern side of the cirque a bit to get you to the lakes themselves.
When we first arrived, extremely early in the day by our standards (1pm or so), we were the only people in the entire cirque. We took advantage of this fact to plop our gear down at the best camp spot (in our humble opinion) and then immediately jump into the main lake. My tolerance for cold water is absolutely nonexistent, and I found this to be an almost pleasant experience, despite visible evidence of a huge snowfield melting directly into the lake behind us.
Tumblr media
I don't know if it's age or what, but lately I've found that I really enjoy shorter hiking days that get us into camp early, allowing for all sorts of comparatively relaxing shenanigans. In this case, we spent some time after swimming eating lunch, then sleeping on the ground in the sun like easily-sunburned lizards, then setting up and organizing the rest of our camp. With plenty of time still before dinnertime/sunset, we set out on a dayhike of the cirque, just to see what we could see.
Tumblr media
Lindsey steered us toward one of the numerous unnamed waterfalls that flow down from the top of the cirque to feed the various lakes, and then we circled around to the west from there until we ran up against the cliff edge of the cirque to the south, and then we walked back to camp. I really enjoyed this little impromptu adventure: though I'd been planning to try to scramble up to the impressively-named Forbidden Lakes earlier that day, the heat and the previous climb had taken their toll and this short, less difficult jaunt felt like the perfect compromise between that bigger undertaking and doing nothing at all.
For the rest of the night, we just relaxed and enjoyed all the free time that our relatively short mileage day afforded us. I even stayed up a bit past sunset to take some more astrophotos, though the near-full moon made it difficult.
Tumblr media
Our third day would just be the hike back to the car, but there were still some worthwhile moments and views to share, so I'll save those for next time...

Five Local Parks Near East Liverpool City Hospital
Providing award-winning healthcare for over 113 years, East Liverpool City Hospital is a Leapfrog Grade A facility. It is also nationally recognized as one of the top 100 hospitals in the country. The hospital's staff is committed to providing patients with the highest quality of care.
Thompson Park
Located at the intersection of Park Way and Park Blvd in East Liverpool, Ohio, Thompson Park is a well-maintained, public park. It offers swimming and other family friendly activities. In addition, the park has an exercise trail, three tennis courts, and a 27-hole disc golf course. The park is also a popular destination for weddings, parties, and family reunions.
Thompson Park is owned by the East Liverpool Fawcett Community Foundation. It is maintained by the Parks Department of East Liverpool. The park was built in 1899 and has been used for swimming, hiking, and other recreational activities.
The Thompson House hotel is a museum collection, although its history is not fully documented. A recent study has brought the early history of the hotel into focus.
During the late nineteenth century, Thompson House hotel was a prominent advertising location. The lobby floor was adorned with thousands of tiles. One of the tiles formed the name of the East Liverpool Potteries Company.
One of the other features of the lobby was a teapot. The teapot was 14 feet in diameter. Originally, it was for sale. The teapot is located two miles south of Thompson Park.
The Thompson House hotel was owned by Will L. and John C. Thompson. In 1899, the Thompson family donated 100 acres of land to the city of East Liverpool. In addition, the Thompson family was responsible for Thompson Place, Thompson Lane, and Thompson Music Company.
The lobby floor of the Thompson House hotel was made of thousands of tiles. One of the tiles, "Roll Call," was nearly thirty feet long. It was made up of names of seventeen potteries. This was a great feat of architecture.
Broadway Wharf
Located on the banks of the Ohio River, Broadway Wharf is a small public park. It is also the site of a popular boat launch. The park has walking trails and a swimming pool.
The park was developed as a getaway from industries in the city. It has a basketball and football field. There are also walking trails and a playground.
The park was funded through a grant from the ServeOhio program. The park was upgraded with new lighting and sidewalks, and a concrete boat ramp was installed. It also has a sanitary sewer hook-up for stern-wheelers. The city has plans to replace the wooden front of the facility.
The park has a playground and a swimming pool. It is also home to the East Liverpool High School Alumni Association. There are several area parks.
The Fifth Street Historic District is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It was constructed in NeoClassical Revival style. It once housed the Crosser and Olgivie store, and the Ogilvie Department Store.

Beaver Creek State Park is located on the banks of Little Beaver Creek in Columbiana County. The park includes a gorge that rises over 400 feet above the river. The park also contains remnants of the historic canal system.
Beaver Creek State Park is a great place for hiking, wildlife viewing and picnicking. The park is also home to two haunted locks. One lock, Gretchen's Lock, is haunted by the daughter of the man who built the lock.
The park also has an interpretive center that exhibits live animals and natural history dioramas. The center also hosts a variety of events, including nature walks and an Earth Day event.
The park also offers a campground. The campground is located high above Little Beaver Creek and features large shaded sites. The campground is also pet friendly. There are 53 non-electric sites with pit latrines and tables. You can also rent a tepee or a camping unit with a sleeping pad and storage containers. The cost is $5 per night and includes a cooler and sleeping pads.

Across the country, a number of nursing organizations are picketing hospitals to protest unfair labor practices. In one of these cases, a group of nurses at East Liverpool City Hospital decided to walk off the job for three days after their contract expired.
They claimed that the hospital failed to meet its staffing guidelines. Instead of meeting these standards, the hospital forced nurses to work longer hours. They also alleged that the hospital had committed multiple unfair labor practices.
In response to the complaint, East Liverpool City Hospital claimed that it had done nothing wrong. However, an independent federal agency has charged the hospital with acting illegally.
The National Labor Relations Board has filed a complaint against the hospital, which is a violation of federal labor laws. The Board has also charged Prime Health-East Liverpool City Hospital with multiple unfair labor practices.
The nurses claim that the hospital is unwilling to remedy serious violations of federal labor law. The hospital has been unable to agree on a contract with the Ohio Nurses Association. In September, the nurses were granted a contract extension for two months, but after that, the contract expired.
The nurses returned to work in hopes of negotiating a contract. They met with the hospital for the first time on November 17th, but did not reach an agreement. This was the first of 11 bargaining sessions that did not result in an agreement.
The nurses are pleading with the hospital to reach an agreement. But the hospital appears willing to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars fighting the federal government.
The Ohio Nurses Association has urged the hospital to meet with the union to discuss a solution. The union has offered to postpone the strike until after Thanksgiving, but the hospital is still rejecting the offer.

Podcast to Feature Local Woman’s Search for Her Mother
Tumblr media
April Green Thompson hasn’t had this particular nightmare for almost eight years now, and she knows matter-of-factly because it started right after her mother went missing and continued for a little more than a decade.  Nancy Lynn Green stood 5-foot-3 inches and weighed a mere 120 pounds when she vanished on September 30, 2002, from the campus of the Ohio Valley Medical Center. Nancy was dropped off by her sister for an appointment at Northwood Health Services, but never showed up and has not been seen since. Because Nancy went missing a few months earlier in the wooded areas behind Wheeling Hospital, family members initially searched hillsides and creek banks near OVMC before the troupe of about 25 people walked the shores of the Ohio River. That area, in fact, is the setting for Thompson’s nightmare, a simple dream, really, that involves only Thompson standing on that portion of Heritage Trail watching an extended, disfigured arm glide by. “I don’t know if she’s reaching for help or waving goodbye,” explained the Wheeling resident. “But I’m pretty sure it was her arm reaching out of the (Ohio) River behind Orrick, and that it looked grotesque because it had been in the water for so long. “A part of me thinks it was her reaching out to show me where she was,” Thompson said. “She wasn’t a happy person. She thought she was a burden, so I doubt she was reaching for help.” Nancy Lynn Green was reported missing the day after she vanished from the OVMC campus in Center Wheeling. Forever Searching Thompson has participated in media interviews through the years, especially during the last several months as the 20th anniversary of Green’s disappearance approaches. She has been a guest a few times on River Talk 100.1/100.9 FM, has told her story to LEDE News, and now will be the featured guest on the podcast, “Locating the Lost – A True Crime Podcast” with hosts Travis Hartford and Jeff Atwood. The show is set to broadcast tomorrow at 6 p.m. on the “Locating the Lost” YouTube channel. “The way I look at it, the podcast was another opportunity to get my Mom’s information out there because you never know,” Thompson said. “That show could have some fan somewhere that knows something. That’s how this works. Something from somewhere. “At least that’s what I hope for, but there’s no guarantees, of course. It was the same with radio and the internet articles,” she explained. “Businesses didn’t have cameras like they do now so there wasn’t any of that to check, and no one would have noticed her walking anywhere. That’s just the way people are, and people were the same back then. My Mom was a little lady. Unless she really wanted to, she didn’t attract much attention.”  The hosts of the podcast, Hartford and Atwood, had done their research but asked many of the same questions that had been posed to her in the past. “What she was wearing, the fact she didn’t go inside for the appointment, she was missing a few months before this time and found, she was bipolar, and everything else. I’m really not sure if there’s anything new anyone could ask me at this point,” Thompson said. “Trust me, I’ve thought about it.” Nancy Lynn Green has been missing since September 2002. “Again” Aunt Darlene had left a cell phone message for her while she worked at a nursing home in the Blaine community of Belmont County. “Your mother is missing again.” That was it. “Once I had taken a break, I got the message and that’s when I left work so I could make sense of whatever,” Thompson remembered. “I didn’t know what to do, who to call, or where to look first because OVMC is pretty much in the middle of so much. The woods are up there, the creek down there, Centre Market was just down the street, and downtown was just across the bridge. “For all I knew, she could have been walking the streets of downtown Wheeling for whatever reason. Maybe she was looking for a friend she had met in Hillcrest or where she lived. I had no idea,” she said in a frustrated voice. “That’s why we looked everywhere we could think of, and we did go up into the woods first because that’s where she hid the first time, but to this day I don’t know where she was that time when she went missing.” After she was discovered in July by law enforcement, Nancy explained to her daughter her intent was to remain lost. “She said she was trying to starve herself so she would be a burden anymore, but she told me a raccoon scared her out of the woods,” Thompson said. “Who knows what really happened because she had left her medications and everything else behind. She could have been hallucinating, who knows? “That’s why I don’t believe she’s with us anymore, but I would like to have something even if it’s just one of her bones. Is that what is in the river? Is that what my dream means? I really don’t know what could be left in there after all this time,” the daughter added. “Maybe, because of this podcast and the articles, someone will tell us something after the podcast is broadcasted on Sunday.” Read the full article

NW Portland: Forest Park
6 June 2022
Tumblr media
We were spending one night in Portland on our way down to Bend. This was a great early morning loop - a long gradual climb on gravel, then a fast curvy ride back down into the city on pavement. 25 kms and a little more than 400m of climbing, in an hour and a half of actual riding, with another hour at the coffee shop or stopping for breathers and pictures along the way.
Tumblr media
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The ride began on Thurman in northwest Portland. More specifically, the ride began at Dragonfly Coffee House. Thurman climbs slowly through a nice residential neighborhood, crossing the bridge over the lower end of Macleay Creek. After two miles, the road ends, for cars, and becomes the Leif Ericsson Trail, which winds gradually up through Forest Park. It’s still a road, but a largely unpaved one. The surface is good, with the exception of a few rougher areas and some wetter ones (it’s been raining a lot recently). The mud was neither deep nor thick, but there was more than enough to get on everything. The dog walkers ran out in the first mile or two, but the occasional joggers continued, and after 5 or 6 miles, all that was left were one or two hard core runners. I didn’t pass anyone else on a bike.
About 7 miles in, I turned left on Saltsman Road (also just a wide trail) for the final climb up the ridge and back to the pavement of Skyline Drive. Skyline continues to climb another mile or so up past the big cemetery (worth pulling in for the great views off to the west). Traffic wasn’t heavy on Skyline, but what traffic there was was fast and there was little shoulder and limited visibility, so not ideal. That section was over quickly and there were almost no cars on Thompson and Cornell. The latter is closed at two old tunnels, precluding any through traffic (there are easy bypasses for bikes and foot traffic). Then you’re out of the forest and back among the homes for the descent back into the city.

The Director,
National Park Sevice
Washington, D.C.
Dear Mr. Director,
Following is the report of Sequoia National Park for the month of August, 1936:
[u] 000 GENERAL [/u]
[u] 010 - Introduction [/u]. August was an unnaturally busy month in the number of visiting Washington officials.  The list included Assistant Directors Wirth, Tolson, and Bryant, Assistant to the Director Ben H. Thompson, and W.K. Mattingly of the Bureau of the Budget.
Superintendent White, whose left index finger became infected from a bad cut while on a packing trip July 26, was either confined to his home or in a hospital at San Francisco during the entire month. His finger was finally removed on August 21 at Fort Miley Hospital in San Francisco, and he is expected back in the park on September 4.
[u] 021 - Weather in the park. [/u]  August was clear and warm. Thunder showers occurred in the high back country. The weather summary follows:
Ash Mountain   Max. 106   Min. 55   Mean 84.7   Precip. .02   Snow 0  Clear 23   Partly Cloudy 6   Cloudy 2
Giant Forest     Max. 86     Min. 44   Mean 66.22   Precip .15   Snow 0   Clear 21  Partly Cloudy 6  Cloudy 4
[u] 100 ADMINISTRATIVE [/u]
[u] 110 - Status of work [/u]. Work continued at high summer peak. Several seasonal Civil Service jobs were established, and the eligibles selected are now filling jobs previously necessarily but ineffectually handled by CCC enrollees.
[u] 120 - Park inspections by [/u]:
[u] 121 - Superintendent [/u]. During the absence of Superintendent white, Assistant Superintendent Tobin inspected the North Fork, Salt Creek, and South Fork areas, in addition to frequent visits to jobs going on in the Giant Forest, Lodgepole and Lost Grove Districts. He also made two short campfire talks.
[page 2]
The Park Naturalist devoted a profitable day observing the educational program in Yosemite National park, and was permitted to attend a conference of ranger-naturalists called by Park Naturalist Harwell so that Dr. Bryant and Superintendent Thomson could discuss matters pertaining to the naturalist work.  This trip impressed upon Park Naturalist Boen the importance of observing activities in other parks during the height of the summer period.
The Park Naturalist also attended the recent Wildlife Conference in San Francisco, while representing the Superintendent at the Western Conference of State parks.  He also make observations of park activities in this part of the State and visited the Berkeley laboratories.
460  -  Birds            All wildlife appears to be in normal condition.  An
470  -  Animals        American Condor was reported seen in the Kern Canyon.
490  -  Emergency Conservation Work.  State Forester Pratt devoted two days inspecting work in the park, and enjoyed the relaxing atmosphere of Giant Forest.  Mr. Pratt was hihgly commendatory of our work, particularly with reference to ECW, and mentioned especially the wilderness aspect of Giant Forest.
The type mapping of the park has been considerably speeded up by the addition of four more men from the Regional Office.
ECW Administrative Inspector Maurice Thede made routine inspection of ECW projects.
The work of the CCC boys has been uninterrupted except for about 40 boys loaned to the State for two days on a grass fire outside the park.  With the exception of the work started last year on the Heather lake Trail, the ECW projects for August are progressing as reported last month.  The outstanding endeavor, of course, is the Dorst Creek Campground, the first unit of which will be practically completed for Labor Day occupancy by park visitors.  Water will be piped, fireplaces completed and tables placed for 75 camps.
500    USE OF PARK FACILITIES BY THE PUBLIC
510  -  Travel.  All indications point to another record breaking travel year in the history of the park.  Already travel has passed the 200,000 mark, and with an increase of 13.1% for the year and with another month to go (which includes the Labor Day holidays), the previous record of 205,000 visitors should easily be shattered.  Although an increase of 11.9% cars was made for the year, only .2% increase is noted for the month, with visitors even less  - .12%.  An increase of 26% in the total out of State travel over last year is noted.  Approximately 11% of the total park travel for the year was out-of-State.
               530  -  Visitors
8/2    Mr. Bascemayer, Regional Office, San Francisco, Calif.
8/7    Family of Superintendent Tillotson, Grand Canyon National Park, Ariz.

Today we remember the passing of Hunter S. Thompson who Died: February 20, 2005 in Woody Creek, Colorado
Hunter Stockton Thompson was an American journalist and author, and the founder of the gonzo journalism movement. He first rose to prominence with the publication of Hell's Angels (1967), a book for which he spent a year living and riding with the Hells Angels motorcycle club to write a first-hand account of the lives and experiences of its members.
In 1970, he wrote an unconventional magazine feature titled "The Kentucky Derby Is Decadent and Depraved" for Scanlan's Monthly, which both raised his profile and established him as a writer with counterculture credibility. It also set him on a path to establishing his own subgenre of New Journalism that he called "Gonzo", which was essentially an ongoing experiment in which the writer becomes a central figure and even a participant in the events of the narrative.
Thompson remains best known for Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (1971), a book first serialized in Rolling Stone in which he grapples with the implications of what he considered the failure of the 1960s counterculture movement. It was adapted on film twice: loosely in Where the Buffalo Roam starring Bill Murray as Thompson in 1980, and directly in 1998 by director Terry Gilliam in a film starring Johnny Depp and Benicio del Toro. The Doonesbury cartoon character Duke – who was modeled after Thompson – pens an essay about "my shoplifting conviction" titled "Fear and Loathing at Macy's Menswear", a reference to Thompson's book.
Politically minded, Thompson ran unsuccessfully for sheriff of Pitkin County, Colorado, in 1970 on the Freak Power ticket. He became well known for his dislike of Richard Nixon, whom he claimed represented "that dark, venal, and incurably violent side of the American character". He covered Nixon's 1972 reelection campaign for Rolling Stone and later collected the stories in book form as Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail '72.
Thompson's output notably declined from the mid-1970s, as he struggled with the consequences of fame, and he complained that he could no longer merely report on events, as he was too easily recognized. He was also known for his lifelong use of alcohol and illegal narcotics, his love of firearms, and his iconoclastic contempt for authoritarianism. He often remarked: "I hate to advocate drugs, alcohol, violence, or insanity to anyone, but they've always worked for me."
Thompson died by suicide at the age of 67, following a series of health problems. In accordance with his wishes, his ashes were fired out of a cannon in a ceremony funded by his friend Johnny Depp and attended by friends including then-Senator John Kerry and Jack Nicholson. Hari Kunzru wrote, "the true voice of Thompson is revealed to be that of American moralist ... one who often makes himself ugly to expose the ugliness he sees around him."

You can reach, reach out your hand ~You Will Be Found, Ben Platt
Of the seventy or so people that they’d broken out of prison, only twenty three had hung around and kept in contact with them. Between Evan and other bounty hunters, predators and illness and the other sorts of hazards, only seventeen still breathed.
That wasn’t to say they had seventeen people at their disposal, though. When they reached out, only a handful responded - and they were never certain who it would be. They often went weeks without hearing from Old Lady Ida, and Willie Whittaker, who’d had the sour luck to be visiting family when Lancing had struck, tended to get distracted, and seldom showed up even if he sent back that he was on his way. Horley had only met Herbert Jenners, a shepherd once-upon-a-time, twice, once when he’d been breaking him out of a prison wagon and the other when they’d cut down Teddie Brown.
Always, though, Evan came running.
Like a dog to its master, she’d come trotting up on one of her horses, eyes keen and ready to obey, guns gleaming at her side. And it wasn’t just to Horley and his Mistress that she was loyal - when Marshal Davies needed help, there she was at his side, and when Samson Finch whistled she sniffed at his heels. She held no true morality he could see - upheld the law for the Marshall, but spurned it when Finch was in need of her help. If it lined her pockets, so it seemed, then she would do it.
But he’d heard tell of her. How she’d stop and help someone free their legs from a bear trap, offer them an expensive miracle cure, buy only the cheapest thing when they insisted on paying her back. Riding miles to rescue someone's’ kidnapped friend or to bring a sick man home. He’d also, though, heard of her freeing a hunter from his own trap only to turn around and rob him, to lasso someone off their horse for seemingly no reason and drag her behind her own for half a mile even after he’d long stopped screaming.
Still, though, he could count on her to always come when they called, and so what she did on her own time concerned only her. So long as she left his Mistress’s name out of it, at least.
When they’d been summoned to Blackwater by Amos Lancing, they’d sent letters to every one of the now twelve that still lived. They were no fools, and had no inclinations that Amos had good motives.
  Seven wrote back.
  Four showed up.
It was no surprise to Horley when Evan trotted up, a horse he’d never seen before beneath her, tall and dark with a light face, offering him a deferential inclination of her head before urging her horse to wait not far from their carriage.
She took to his word as though it were gospel when they spoke, reaffirming what they’d said in their letters - that they were meeting with Amos Lancing and thought he had nefarious plans. That he worried for his mistress’s safety (and she wasn’t terribly happy with him for that) and needed back up.
He’d have been happier had they had all seven, but it was what it was so he sat in the carriage as Lucas Fletcher took the reins and the rest rode guard around them, Evan’s stallion snorting unhappily until the woman gave them a wider berth to keep from distracting the stallion and mare that pulled them.
In Blackwater, Evan disappeared. She was there one moment and gone the next, and it was only as they were approaching Lancing that he, scanning the rooftops, spotted the gleam of her rifle’s scope and then the tip of her hat though, if he hadn’t known what to look for, he’d never have seen it. He gave the slightest inclination of his head in approval, then followed his Mistress as the other three flanked them.
Naturally, it all went wrong. His Mistress lost her temper and shot Lancing, and he had to yank her to safety as Evan went to work picking off Lancing’s men on the rooftops, Thompson Jade and Russel Sims working with Fletcher to clear the streets. Evan (she’d never provided a last name, and he’d never asked) jumped down from the roof, staggering before catching herself, and jogged over to them, mouth drawn tight, and looked at Horley as though to say ‘what now?’
He bid some of them to join him as he went after Shaw and some to go with his lady but, of course, only Evan trailed him - he rather thought the men were trying to impress his lady but she was still grieving and so it served only as a source of amusement for the two of them - covering his back as they worked their way up through Lancing’s men and towards the bank.
Like an enforcer, she stood behind him as he demanded the papers (forgeries, as he knew them to be) from Shaw before turning about and hurrying back to his lady though, from the sounds of it, he thought she was doing well enough on her own.
He told Evan to leave the man alive but, as he walked away, he heard the sharp crack of a gun, and was not sorry in the least for it.
The carriage, naturally, almost ran him over as it flew around the corner. Evan made a funny sound low in her throat and grabbed the back of his coat, yanking him back, and he nodded his thanks as he jumped into the carriage, the woman whistled for, and mounting up on, her horse, the stallion crow-hopping unhappily as gunfire cracked through the air as more of Lancing’s men rode in.
They almost made it.
The creek was in sight when four - no, five - of Lancing’s men came flying over a hill. Fletcher fell dead from the carriage, head no more than mist at the end of his ragged neck, his mistress lunging to take control of the carriage before the horses could run wild and whipping them to run faster as the rest began to return fire - Sims’ horse collapsed under him and the man was crushed as it rolled over him - and then blood sprayed from Evan’s torso and she was in reach and his lady was yelling “Horley!” but already he was lunging, grabbing her arm and catching her as she pitched from the saddle, pulling her back and into the carriage, applying pressure to the wound as his lady guided the carriage, Jade shooting down the last of Lancing’s men.

King Falls AM - Episode Eleven: Ringin’ Hell’s Doorbell
View on Google Docs
Summary: October 1, 2015 - After an unexpected listener call-in, the boys find a cassette tape in the mail and listen live as an adventure unfolds from one of King Falls less-friendly hiking trails.
[podcast intro music]
[KFAM intro music]
Sammy Welcome back, everyone. The time is 4:44AM here at King Falls AM.
Ben It’s a slow night. You wanna do… weather and traffic?
Sammy It’s warmin’ up! And if there’s traffic at this ungodly hour, we got problems.
Ben *snickers* Got that right, Sammy! Uh, before we go back to the phones in a sec, I’ve got an email I’d like to read you. I think you’ll get a kick out of this. [definitely smirking]
Sammy Oh! Well, very cool. Alright, whatcha got?
Ben [eager] So, you know I wrote the producers of Mission Apparition, right?
Sammy … No. What are you talkin’ about?
Ben Yes you do. It’s that brain tumor of a show on Channel 13?
Sammy I-I- I know the show, Ben! I’m saying I didn’t know you wrote them.
Ben Dude. You’re gonna love it. I emailed trying to get them booked as guests so we could tear them apart. *snicker*
Sammy Well, I mean, they did keep the lights on a few weeks back, running an ad, of course. [not hopeful] So, please don’t tell me you got confrontational?
Ben If telling the truth about their staged scares counts as confrontational, then… [smug] I totally did.
Sammy Okay, so you accost a paid sponsor of King Falls AM; please continue…
Ben *excited laughter* Okay, let me read this to you. “Dear Sammy,”- [aside] sorry, you— left your station email up.
Sammy Uh-huh.
Ben “Dear Sammy, We at Mission Apparition are extremely sorry! you feel the show is “Overly Produced” and not “true to the nature of actual distressed spirits.” In actuality, Dan and Larry are two of the most highly trained professionals in this field. While we appreciate constructive criticism, name-calling just isn’t needed. If you have any real suggestions to make the show better, please let us know.”
Sammy Ben. [resigned] What did you call them?
Ben Doesn’t matter. What does matter is that I wrote them back, and they’re going to be shooting a future episode- of the show- in King Falls.
Sammy No way!
Ben I said “we have many fine spectral establishments here.” The gauntlet was thrown down and they took the bait.
Sammy As much as I hate to say this, you’re gonna get to see the Mission Apparition guys in a real situation at least.
Ben Oh yeah. [stoked] I’m not sure which to offer up the old Slaughter House off Cottontail Hollow or the library.
Sammy I’m not gonna make a you’re-trying-to-impress-Emily comment here, because I know that that place is chock full of activity.
Ben Exactly.
Sammy But… [semi-muttered] You are trying to impress Emily.
Ben *deep breath* Whatevs. K-ca- Okay, get this though! After I told them I was co-host of a late-night AM talk show? they asked if I’d like to come on set so I can get an interview live.
Sammy Well, book it! Make it happen!
Ben Done and done.
Sammy But please stop using my email.
Ben No promises.
Sammy Alright folks, after that exciting announcement, we’re gonna open up the phone lines to you, our dear listeners. And, uh, Ben? You got a topic?
Ben *tsk* I absolutely do, but you can’t have it until a touch after the 5 o’clock hour, Sammy.
Sammy You heard the man, ladies and gents. It’s a bonafide free-for-all for the next ten minutes or so. Give us a call 424-279-3858.
Ben Or hit us up on twitter @kingfallsam
Sammy Lucky Line 1, you’re live with Sammy and Ben.
Line 1 [deep, nasally, almost bestial voice] Uh, yeah… *heavy breathing, smacking lips* Did you check the mail? Heh
Sammy [mildly sarcastic] Maybe once or twice in my lifetime, uh, do you have a topic? Or is this Ted Kaczynski[1] calling from prison?
Line 1 Uh… you’ll have a topic sooon… heh… [ominous click, dial tone]
Ben Yoouu know I should go take a look in our mail slot now, right?
Sammy [exasperated] Don’t.
Ben It’s a verbal triple-dog-dare! I’ll be right back.
Sammy *sighs* One day, it’s just gonna be a head. I just know it. Line 5, welcome to King Falls AM.
[ominous music]
Line 5 [voice is male, higher pitched, and very nervous] Oh, I got through! Sammy?! I- I need to speak with you in private. Please!
Sammy Iii’m gonna be a little bit sir- we just came back from break. But I’m happy to talk about whatever.
Line 5 We really can’t talk about this on the air. Ehh *nervous breathing* It’s about… wwel-I- *quick sigh* - I really don’t wanna say too much, but— I sent you a text message about, uh…ohh…a month or so back? We need to speak! It’s incredibly urgent!
Sammy Sir, I get a lot of texts over the course of a month.
Line 5 W-well- we can’t talk about this on the air.
Sammy Who am I speaking with?
Ben [returning] We have mail, Sammy!
Line 5 [almost whispered] I turned the power back on…
Ben Mr. Thompson?
Probably Mr. Thompson Err— no! [click, dial tone]
Sammy Hello? Sir?
Ben What was that about? [laughing slightly] I swear that dude sounded just like my old science professor.
Sammy Can you get a number on line 5, Ben?
Ben … Yeah! Yeah… uh, in a minute! Look at this!
Sammy *laugh* Is that a cassette tape?
Ben Yeah. No letter— just a tape. It’s labeled “D.D.” [eager] We should play this.
Sammy I hope it’s Duran Duran.
Ben I’ll just stick this in… heeere.
Sammy Uh, do you think we should listen to that first? I know you got a trigger finger on the dump, but…
Ben [smugly] You’re looking at the fastest finger in the tri-state.
Sammy You know, there’s a dirty joke there that, for our friendship, I’m just gonna cruise- right on past.
Ben Where’s the play button on this hunk’a junk? Merv, why do we have a cassette player in the studio?! It’s 2015.
Sammy I think you know why.
Ben [hands rubbing together] I’m excited! [sounds of tape being inserted in the player]
Sammy You better be payin’ attention. I don’t want to hear one –
[TAPE PLAYS]
Lance [heavy Australian accent, narrating like a documentary] “This is Lance McCord checking in. I’m about 5 kilometers off the Stealth Ridge Trail now. It’s heavily wooded and just getting thicker.”
[stop click]
Sammy Do you know this guy? “Lance”?
Ben Never heard of him. But if the “R” word was politically correct for broadcast? I’d totally use it for him right now. That trail is like the boonies within the boonies.
[play click]
Lance “So far so good. I was- I was a bit worried with all the tall tales surrounding the ‘Devil’s Doorstep.’ I guess that’s why I’m talking to you; tracing my steps. Nothing strange or out of the ordinary. I have noticed a lack of wildlife and birds, to be this far in the bush.”
[stop click]
Ben … There is no way.
Sammy “The Devils Doorstep”?
Ben Definitely the R-word— or has a death wish! Or both!
Sammy Where is this place?
Ben [reluctant] It’s north of King Falls. It’s a dark-ass set of woods. Obviously, this guy isn’t from around here because he’d know you don’t even talk about it, much less go there.
Sammy Ominous…
Ben And We Don’t joke about it.
Sammy [challenge accepted] It sounds so inviting, The Devil’s Doorstep. What kind of Welcome Mat do you think the Dark Lord picks out? Do you think he has a “NO SOLICITING” sign?
Ben Stop it. I know you laugh about stuff like this, but… Don’t.
[play click]
[eerie siren-like singing in bg]
Lance “Right, about 30 minutes from my last check in. My mobile has lost signal. It- looks like it’s just you and me, pal. I lost a little bit of, uh, time. I got turned around a few minutes back. All the paths are starting to look really similar, so, it’s hard to… [ominous chant-singing in bg. there’s static/rustling/indistinct whispers that fades in and out] Still no wildlife. I don’t know if any men or women have ever stepped where I’m stepping. I kind of like that.”
[stop click, siren song stops]
Sammy Did you hear something there?
Ben NOPE! NO SINGING.
Sammy I didn’t say singing. I said something.
Ben I didn’t hear anything!
[play click]
[static or whispers in bg]
Lance “It’s getting colder now. Darker. That or my- mind is playing the tiniest of tricks on me. Voices, singing— whispers. It’s, uh– it’s head games. [siren song begins] Nothing’s gonna stop me from making it to the gate.”
[stop click]
Ben I think that’s enough.
Sammy Ben, honestly. “Gate?” I’m not following here. You’re the expert, what’s he looking for? Or- or why’s he even looking for it?
Ben COMMERCIAL TIME! Let’s do this…

Sammy And welcome back to King Falls AM that’s 660 on the radio dial. We’ve just been listening to a tape we received anonymously. Apparently, there’s a hiker out adventuring in—
Ben [desperately, voice breaking] LINE 8, you’re live.
Finn Ooh boy! Things are getting tense on that tape, y’know?!
Ben Forget the tape! Ha-how-how’re you doing, Finn? Is everything— still intact?
Finn Doin’ swell, just swell! [scratching sounds]
Ben You okay there, Finn?
Finn Oh sorry! Didn’t think you’d pick that up. I’ve just been scratchin something awful the past couple weeks. I got in some poison oak, or— something – I don’t know!
Sammy Glad to hear you’re doing well, after…
Finn *growling* [scratching continues]
Ben [apprehensively] … You got a travel buddy with you tonight, Finn?
Finn Oh, no. [horn in bg] Just got cut off going down the highway, here. [muttered] Lousy drivers… [almost shouting] we got three other lanes y’know! [distracted] Ahh! Look at the food billboards!
Sammy Okaaay. Um, what’s on your mind tonight buddy?
Finn Ah, just callin’ in to say hi… that sorta thing. Plus, this story? Wooweee, who is this guy? Have you talked about this place before? I don’t think I heard you mention it… Uhh, I don’t think…
Ben Because we don’t, Finn.
Finn Spoooky stuff, fellas!
Sammy Yeeaah… I don’t know if you were–
Finn *howls loudly*
Ben I- I’m sorry. Yyou gotta keep your pup- quiet.
Finn [confused] Pup? No doggy here! Just you two fellas- and mee, rolling down the rooaad.
Sammy You don’t have a dog with you, Finn?
Finn Couldn’t if I wanted to. I’m allergic. [scratching]
Ben Are… are you feeling okay? Did you ever get checked out after that night you hit that… were— dog?
Finn What?! I wouldn’t lay hands on a pooch! Are you feelin’ alright, Ben?
Sammy *laugh* He’s talkin’ about the dog you accidentally hit awhile back. Uh, y-you got out to check on it and the call dropped off?
Finn Uh… Naooo, wasn’t me. Y’know, I think I’d remember somethin’ like that! [honking in bg, sound of semi passing] Dammit all, I gotta go, boys. Can’t scratch, drive, and talk at the same time. Finish that tape, it’s givin’ me the willies!
Ben Stay awake and- stay safe, Finn… Make a doctor’s appointment!— maybe…
Sammy Or a vet…
Finn *chuckles* Oh, you two! I’ll catch you later. *loud howl*
[click, dial tone]
Sammy Now, Ben. You know- I love what you do on this show. I wouldn’t wanna do this with anybody-else… BUT. I’ve got a tiny issue with you cutting to unscheduled breaks during conversations.
Ben [innocently] Did that happen? I’m so sorry, I just… I’m so interested in—
Sammy In doing everything but playing that tape. You got us all interested now, man. You gotta follow through.
Ben Okay– [definitely not having fun] it was fun! but I think we should just forget about it.
Sammy Impossible.
Ben S-sit down, don’t—
[play click]
Lance [wind gusting] “There’s no doubt that something is, uh, keeping me away from the gate at this point. [siren song in bg] My- watch has just stopped working, so I don’t know what time it is. I can’t really see the sun from the thickest overhangs to tell… I checked my compass [sing-chanting in bg] to ensure I was… [rustling] WHAT THE?” [creepy sing-chanting intensifies]
Super Creepy Whisper Voice “TURRRN. BAAACK. NOOOW.”
Lance “My fu[bleep]ing compass- is literally spinning like a top! There’s EVIL in these woods! You can feel it- in the air! It’s palpable!”
[stop click]
Sammy Ben! Don’t be mad!
Ben [seriously upset] We shouldn’t be playing this! This isn’t a joke, man! This is a tape that probably needs to go to the proper authorities! I’m gonna google Missing Persons.
Sammy Look, I’m not against that. But let’s finish this up, and at the very least talk to me. Tell us a little bit about the woods.
Ben If- if I tell you, will you stop playing the damn tape?
Sammy Absolutely! Help fill these last minutes until your actual topic of discussion arrives.
Ben *heavy sigh* The path, Lance is on, is called Stealth Ridge. It’s about a five-mile round-trip hike up north in- Perdition Wood.
Sammy You guys really know how to name things here.
Ben *deep breath* Okay, supposedly— as in, “legend-has-it” kind of talk, way off the beaten path— I mean WAY off, as in nobody’s ever seen it— is what he’s looking for. A cave called… [reluctant] “The Devil’s Doorstep”
Sammy Uh-huh.
Ben [agitated] Put two and two together here- Sammy! It’s an entrance to the gates of hell! Many people have went out looking for it! None have ever found it— SOME never return.
Sammy [softly] Have you been up there, Ben?
Ben Once…
Sammy And?
Ben Are you serious?! HELL NO, I haven’t been! I’m not crazy like Crocodile Dundee[1] on that tape.
Sammy I mean, he’s gotta be okay, right? The tape made it here! [getting nervous] I-it could’ve been him who dropped it off in our mail and called tonight! Right?
Ben This was fun for a minute, now it’s just massively creepy. Let’s move— [play click] SAMMY!
Sammy Du- you’re looking at me! I didn’t push the button!
[siren song]
Lance “It is so cold. [wind gusting] I’ve des-scended a great deal from the initial crest- of the ridge it seems … I saw what appeared to be—”
Super Creepy Whisper Voice “LAASST. WAARRNING. MORRTALLL.”
Ben TURN IT OFF!
[click of buttons being pressed on tape player]
[rustling/cracking in bg]
Lance “What the F[bleep] is that?!”
Sammy [sarcastically] Good job!
Ben Alright it won’t stop. Unplug it! I’m not kidding.
Sammy It is unplugged!
[creepy sing-chanting starts, chilling scream]
Lance *breathing hard* “It’s after me! … [calmer] Umm, I- I don’t know what that was. [song/chant continues in bg] I’m heading to the lip of this cove, here. I think I’m just gonna- wait it out- u-until morning. I’m wet, cold– I, uh, caught my jacket in the bush. I’m bleeding— Jesus… My, uh- my phone is missing. God dammit. It really is just you and— [rustling/cracking]
Super Creepy Not-Whisper Voice MEEE!!!
Lance “No! [impact noise] Help me!!” [sound of running, anguished scream from Lance]
[sing-chanting continues]
[KFAM outro music]
