Summary: when someone walking into the coffee shop you and your two friends own turns into the best moment of your life.
A/N: I hope you like this! It'll be my first Tom Hiddleston multi-chapter fic!
Tumblr media
Today is the day that changed your life.
Today will forever be recognised as the day that changed your life for the better. You were happy to welcome someone into your life that you never imagined before. Getting someone so special to step into your shop was beyond wondrous.
You owned a small coffee shop in the centre of the city, constantly competing with other coffee shops in the district. However, yours was separate from all those around her by one simple fact: you go to Lauren’s Teas if you want the best cappuccino in London.
You were working your usual morning shift that day, organising the cups and preparing a new batch of croissants when the bell dinged. ‘Strange,’ you thought to yourself as you worked your way through the baking, ‘customers normally don’t come in for another fifteen minutes.’
Walking out to the counter, you saw a handsome man standing there waiting for you and you smiled kindly as you looked up at his face. He was six foot two, had curly blonde hair that displayed an innocent youth, his eyes were hidden behind sunglasses, but you imagined them being the most piercing blue that you could. The man tilted his head and laughed at your expense, seeing that you had ultimately frozen while looking at him.
Fully regaining yourself, you smiled up at him and confidently asked, “welcome to Y/N’s Teas, what can I get you?”
The man chuckled and looked up at the board of drinks before looking down at you with a kind smile and replied in the most seductive British voice that you had ever heard, “I will have a caramel macchiato, if you don’t mind? Oh, and also a pain au chocolat, as well please?”
You smiled and took down the order before totalling up at the till and smiling at him, “that will be four pounds and sixteen pence, sir.”
The man gladly handed over the money and you smiled up at him before venturing into the back to grab the newly baked snacks. Walking back out into the main area, you smiled at more customers coming in. Just then, Rose clocked in and smiled at you, quickly telling you to handle the drinks while Rose dealt with the thirsty customers.
You got to work on the caramel macchiato and when it was prepared, you put the mug onto a tray alongside the pain au chocolat and walked over to where the devilishly handsome man was seated by the window.
As you approached the table, you noticed a script laying there and he was laser focused on it. You smiled as you walked over to him, sneaking a peek at the title on the first page, “Thor? You’re signing up for that next Marvel Studios film, sir?”
The man smiled a toothy grin and your heart raced at the sight of it.
“I suppose you are familiar with Marvel then, miss?” The man asked, lifting the macchiato from the tray to sip at it as he stared at you.
You shrugged with a small smile on your face, “I studied drama in University, College and all through High School. I think I know my upcoming legends, sir.”
The man chuckled and mumbled, “I suppose so,” before returning to sipping his macchiato and reading the script and all the lines that were highlighted.
You felt the dismissal in his tone, and you smiled as you walked away from him to go and make more orders. People were patient in this coffee shop and you hastily got to work on making all of the coffees, teas, hot chocolates and any other drink they requested until your shift ended for your break at just gone twelve-o-clock.
As you stepped into the cool air of the spring, you were happy to get away from the hustle and bustle of her cute coffee shop. Grabbing the stolen brioche from your pocket, you started to eat it with a ferocity that showed you hadn’t eaten since last night when you got home and had a pizza. You had the food in your fridge but just couldn’t bring yourself to make any food after cooking so many pastries all the way through your shift.
“Excuse me,” came a voice that startled her but also lit your heart on fire, “I couldn’t help but notice that you dropped this?” The man was there again, and he was holding your keys. Sighing in relief, you walked over to him and grabbed them from him, muttering a small thank you as you did.
The man chuckled and held out his hand to you with a kind smile on his face, “I’m Tom Hiddleston, I am pleased to meet you. I don’t know whether you have heard of me or not.”
You racked your brain to search for the charming man’s name and you recalled that you had seen a few movies way back when that had him in it.
“I think I have seen you before! In Archipelago and Wallander! That was you? Wow!” You gushed and he blushed softly before laughing and shaking his head.
Tom admired how easily excited you were, coming over to deliver his drink and then staying for a conversation? None of the other coffee shops do that.
She seemed so much like a blessing in his life that Tom burnt his lips and tongue several times trying to wake himself up from this vision. She had seen his movies but hadn’t hastily asked for his autograph. She had seen the script for Thor but hadn’t pestered him to show her what was contained on the scripts.
He admired her restraint. She seemed so eager to meet him now and yet, she refrained from the usual questions a fan would ask him and he adored that. Rather boldly, Tom grabbed her hand and held it in his own, staring down at the rough skin that were stained with coffee spots and anything else that she could possibly stain her hands with.
You watched him as he did this, staring in shock as the celebrity studied your every move with such happiness and a horribly hidden fascination.
“You seem distracted, love,” Tom spoke, and you looked into his baby blue eyes with curiosity and a small smile rose onto your lips as you shrugged. He chuckled at that and tilted his head, “what? No begging for autographs? No insisting that you are my number one fan just to get a hug from me?”
You laughed slightly and shook your head as you continued to smile at him, “with all due respect, Mr Hiddleston, you’re the one who engaged with the hand holding we have going on here.”
Tom laughed awkwardly and let go of her hand quickly, his cheeks tinting red with embarrassment. He has never met someone as cheeky as this girl. The again, his younger sister Emma does hold that record up to now. She was quite the menace when she was born.
“I’m guessing by the name of the café that your name is Y/N?” Tom asked hesitantly and you smiled nervously with a small giggle passing afterwards.
You nodded quickly and smiled brightly at him, blushing at the realisation that he took enough care to notice you were the owner and not the prettier one of the duo, Rose.
Tom laughed at your mute response before looking at his watch and sighing sadly, “alas, I would love to talk more but I have a script reading now and I cannot be late for it.”
Eagerly, you stepped forward and hugged the man with a bright smile, “I do hope you come around to my coffee shop more often, Tom! It is always a pleasure to serve future celebrities!”
Tom chuckled and blushed slightly as he looked at you, stroking your cheek delicately and whispering, “I don’t know about celebrity. I honestly think this movie will flop.”
Of course, he thought it would flop. That was because of his pessimism but you knew that he would be amazing when he took to the cameras and became the character that he had been cast for.
You didn’t think you’d see Tom again until maybe he released the movie to theatres. However, the very next week you were cleaning the counter when you heard the sultry British accent again, “a caramel macchiato and pain au chocolat, if you please?”
Your head snapped up in an instant and you smiled widely as you saw that Tom was standing right in front of you and you nodded quickly, totalling up the order and giving him a price lower than the first time.
Tom looked at you confused by the price, had you done something wrong on purpose or were you doing this because of who he was? “I’m terribly sorry but the price you gave me last time was four pounds and sixteen pence? Why is the price lower this time?”
You giggled nervously and bit your lip as you looked at him with a shy smile, "because I have a feeling that you will be becoming one of my regulars, sir, and you value your privacy. I just think it might be a good gesture towards you that I give you such a luxury."
Tom laughed and shook his head before running his fingers through his hair, you watching intently at the motion and biting your lip as you grinned. Tom politely paid for the drink and snack, walking to his usual table and pulling out the script for the film. You keenly watched him when you could and you smiled when you saw him highlighting his lines.
You walked over to him and settled the tray down in front of him, being careful not to get the tray on his script and he smiled when he saw that it was you bringing over the treats. He slowly pushed the script to one side and smiled at you before dropping his gaze to the caramel macchiato and pain au chocolat, "thank you, darling, you have been so nice."
You blushed and smiled sheepishly as your gaze dropped to the floor, "it's truly a pleasure, you interest me, Tom, I hope your movie is as successful as I believe it shall be."
Tom laughed and shook his head as he lifted the drink to his lips and took a sip, "I humbly thank you, darling, I will probably only be in this movie and the next depending on how the people react."
"Ah," you breathed, looking at the highlighted line that you could see, "the God of Mischief, Loki. He is a complex character, worthy of more than just two movies, believe me."
Tom laughed and shrugged as he smiled up at you, "if that is your interpretation, Miss Y/L/N, then I will think of it too! You will have to wait until the movie comes out to really see how Loki is. I just hope that I am everything Kenneth Branagh believes I am. This is a big deal."
"I can tell," you mumbled before smiling at him and bowing your head to hide your blush when he met your eyes. His beautiful baby blues entranced you and you knew that you would never get enough of them.
Tom watched you with a small smile on his face before gesturing to the seat opposite him with a small smile on his face, "why don't you join me, Y/N?"
"Oh no, I couldn't," you mumbled with a small smile on your face as you blushed, "I still have my job to do, Mr Hiddleston!"
Tom shook his head and smiled at you with a raised eyebrow, his eyes watching you with a hunger that you felt your core tighten, "I asked you to sit, darling, you can take your break early."
You nodded and sat opposite him with a grin and he smiled before sipping his macchiato and observing you with a smile, "what do you know of the God of Mischief, Y/N?"
You bit your lip as you thought back to what you were told about Mythologies and you shrugged as you looked at him, "Loki is the God of Mischief, he is Laufeyson, he was taken to Asgard after being tricked by Odin into leaving Oblivion and therefore; Surtr. He had four children; Fenrir, Jormungandr, Hel and Sleipnir. He is the trickster God."
"You know your stuff, Y/N, I am impressed," Tom praised you and you blushed as you smiled at him and then started to get out of your seat to go back to work but Tom stopped you again. Huffing dramatically, you fell back into your side of the booth. "I would love to practice my lines with you, Y/N."
"But I am not fit to read such lines, Tom," you reasoned with a polite smile and Tom chuckled, making your heart race.
The blonde studied you carefully before shrugging with a smirk on his face, "I trust you not to leak anything, I trust you."
Trust. He trusted you with this script and who were you to refuse a request from him? The handsome man truly had you under his spell.
"I can't today, Tom, I have to work and then I agreed with spending some time with my best friend, Rose," you smiled at him and he nodded with a bright smile on his face.
He was so understanding of you having a life and it made your heart soar as he spoke, "of course! Do you mind if I take your number so that we can keep in touch?"
You nodded quickly and he handed you his phone and you smiled as you quickly inputted your number into his contacts with a dopey selfie and he chuckled as he looked at it, "thank you," he muttered before getting up and kissing you on the forehead, "maybe I will see you again? I look forward to it."
You blushed and nodded as he left, smiling a dopey grin before getting out of the booth and carrying the tray back to the kitchen.
A month passed and there was no sign of Tom in your teashop and you sighed, not allowing your disappointment to show on your face as you went about your daily routine in the cafe.
Your phone pinged and you looked down at it curiously.
Had to leave for California, Darling, I apologise for not being able to tell you. Very hush-hush business. Keep a caramel macchiato and a brioche handy for my return. -TH
You smiled dopily at the text and rolled your eyes as you sent back a quick little 'good luck! :)' and continued your routine in the cafe.
When you got home from your shift one afternoon, you were met with a letter on the welcome mat behind your door and you tilted your head as you picked it up. On the front of the letter, it was addressed to you and when you opened the letter, you gasped at what it said.
Dear Miss Y/N,
As a recommendation from one of our actors, you are welcomed onto the set of Marvel Studios' Thor. We look forward to seeing you there.
Sincerely,
Kevin Feige
Well, that day certainly changed your life.

I want to talk about Taika Waititi the artist, because I've been thinking about Boy for two days. (Fucking hate this caveat, but any hate earns an instant block and I will turn off anon if I have to.)
Almost every one of his films is about the power of love to heal. What makes his work more profound is that this is not a naive "love conquers all/love saves the day" narrative. People die. People are hurt. Generational trauma warps. Homes and nations can be broken by their past and their people's unwillingness to face it. Fascism can't be overcome by love alone. Parents can't protect their children from darkness. Children can't escape from what the adult world forces on them. Love is not going to fix all the problems and make all the bad shit go away.
But love can make the world better and survivable. The past can't be undone and the future can be uncertain, but loving others, and yourself, can make life worth living even in the midst of deep sorrow. Some of it is in forgiveness—forgiving previous generations for the harm they've caused (Boy, Hunt for the Wilderpeople, Thor: Ragnarok, and Jojo Rabbit all deal with this)—but it is also forgiveness without excuses. It's never "it's not that bad," but "yeah, it is that bad, but we have to survive beyond it and maybe laugh about it if we can."
Boy in particular is a fucking primal scream of a movie that still manages to be very funny and very forgiving. Jojo Rabbit is similar but on a broader scale, encompassing an entire nation. The nuance of it lies in the films absolutely believing simultaneously that love can make things better and that love will not fix everything.
I think it's really valuable to have that kind of work in the world.

It makes me so incredibly mad that Thor Love and Thunder being kinda bad has made the internet think Taika Waititi is a terrible director or refer to the various corny lines that plague thr mcu as "taika lines" when like, Taika is genuinely such a fucking amazing director snd you only have to see his other movies to know that.
Like yeah Jojo Rabbit was fantastic, it was nominated for best picture for a reason but i think his earlier, more kiwi stuff is really his peak.
What we do in the shadows (the og movie) is probably one of the funniest films ive ever seen, its really well done.
Hunt for the wilderpeople is a fsntastic mix of funny and sad.
But my favorite will forever and always be Boy (2010), a movie that will never fail to make me genuinely weep. It's probably my favorite movie of all time, such a painful ride but also such a joyus one. He also plays a main character in this and gives imo his best performance by far.
Like look, besides love and thunder, all of his other films have been hits, so dont act like hes a shit director just because he had one miss.
(Also dont act like yall didnt love ragnarok, yall fucking loved ragnarok because it was great)

Every Taika Waititi film ranked by how much I liked them, while I count down the days to the release of Next Goal Wins (my most anticipated movie of the year!)
DISCLAIMER: I like all Taika Waititi films, so don't get angry at me
7. Thor: Ragnarok (2017)
Tumblr media
Fun and colourful, I love Korg, Jeff Goldblum is great, but to me this is just a Marvel movie. Sorry, Marvel fans, this movie was just OK.
6. Thor: Love and Thunder (2022)
Tumblr media
More fun and colourful than Ragnarok, loved Christian Bale, loved the kids, loved Jane Foster's arc (I thought it was well handled!). There was a bit too much Korg, I admit. People say this movie had too many jokes and didn't take itself seriously enough. Well, of course it didn't! It's a movie about gods and aliens and stuff in space! Honestly it was a blast and I liked it better than the third one. I said what I said.
5. JoJo Rabbit (2019)
Tumblr media
This is a great film, we all know that. It speaks really well of Taika's filmography that it's so down on the list. It was hilarious and adorable and important. I feel like the comedy-drama could have been better balanced, I couldn't fully connect emotionally. Still, it was great and hilarious, the parody aspects were really well done and I really liked it.
4. Hunt for the Wilderpeople (2016)
Tumblr media
This one is really funny, it doesn't get enough credit for how funny it is. I loved the too leads, especially Sam Neill, I wasn't sure how well he'd fit into Taika's style, but he was fantastic. A really fun film.
3. Eagle vs Shark (2007)
Tumblr media
All Eagle vs Shark haters are wrong, this film is great. Lily is the most adorable person, Jarrod is a dick but played with so much love that you can't help but emphatize with him and hope that he gets a redemption. The story was so sweet, I was actually, like, 'awww'ing out lout at times. Also the small town vibes and the awkwardness, and the feeling of having a giant crush on someone you have never really spoken to, it's all so real, I really love it.
2. What We Do in the Shadows (2014)
Tumblr media
That I didn't rank this as number 1 is a surprise even to myself. This is one of my favourite movies and maybe my favourite comedy film of all time. I love the show as well, but to be honest I think the film is much much better. It's just- the vibes, man. The documentary aspect is fantastic. Also, Stu.
1. Boy (2010)
Tumblr media
This movie feels like being told a secret, it's so personal. It is small and self-contained, but at the same time it creates a world so huge and lived-in that it's hard to believe it wasn't really filmed in the eighties. The kids are adorable, the scenery is so beautiful, the story is so heartfelt and full of emotions it genuinely made me cry (not for anything in particular, just everything had been done with so much love, it made me feel so many emotions and they could only escape through tears). It is Taika Waititi's masterpiece. Where he usually leans more into the comedy, here he lets the seriousness take over when necessary, and it really works so well. I just love this film, it is amazing, go watch it right now.
...and that's it. Taika Waititi is probably my favorite director at the moment, he's got a vision and is very good at realising it. He writes heartfelt and funny stories, likeable characters, amazing dialoge and his films always look very pretty. Totally recoment any of the ones in this list!
