Unoriginal Writing VS Field Trips

A lot of writers worry that their ideas have been done before or rely too much on existing scenarios. And you absolutely do need to be original if you want to write your own book that you intend to publish professionally. But a lot of writers can also take this the other way and start worrying that every single idea they have, no matter how fleshed out and unique it actually is, is just a version of a very broad and generic trope, and so it’s automatically bad and nobody will ever want to read it since it’s all been done before

Let me tell you about what has been dubbed the Peter Parker Field Trip in the fanfic scene

The Peter Parker Field Trip is an incredibly specific type of one-shot fanfiction about Peter Parker visiting Avengers Tower with his class on a school field trip while having to try and hide his status as the Avenger Spider-Man, usually along with hiding the fact that he’s basically been adopted by the Avengers and they all treat each other as family, if not legally having been adopted by Tony. And this is only the summary, it gets way more specific from here to the point where you can follow each story beat by beat and the vast majority of these fics will follow them:

1. Peter discovers that the adults arranged for him to go on the trip despite trying to get out it/telling them not to sign the permission forms. Peter tries to talk his way out of it on the way but fails. Sometimes the teacher will discourage him from lying about having a Stark Internship while they’re there

2. While they’re on the bus Flash teases Peter about how now everyone’s gonna know he doesn’t actually have a Stark Internship, meanwhile Peter’s freaking out about everyone realising he’s more than just an intern

3. The kids arrive at Avengers Tower and pile out of the bus to be greeted by some of not all of the Avengers, usually with Steve and/or Tony leading the introductions. Peter tries to keep his head down but the Avengers either spot him or were actively looking out for him, but at this point they usually don’t acknowledge him too much

4. An actual intern hands out access passes to the kids, everyone has level one clearance except for Peter who has Level Ten Alpha Clearance™️, which is even higher than most of the other Avengers and is reserved for Tony and those closest to him. Peter asks if he can just get a regular pass like the others but the intern says they don’t have any extras, usually while being starstruck at meeting Peter

5. The kids go through a security scanner, through which Jarvis announces their security clearance. Peter has his Level Ten Alpha Clearance™️ broadcast to the entire class, leaving everyone shocked. Flash thinks Peter, resident Poor Kid McOrphanface, bribed Tony Stark, known billionaire, for higher clearance

6. The tour goes ahead. They meet Bruce either in his lab or the medical bay. Bruce has a pleasant chat with Peter, who quickly helps him with something while he’s there. People are shocked that Peter works with Bruce on science stuff

7. The tour goes ahead. They meet Natasha in the training room. She offers to give a demonstration and has Peter come up to fight her. The class are shocked when he doesn’t get instantly thrown on his ass, even though overall it usually ends with him on his ass

8. The tour goes ahead. They meet Thor either on the landing pad as he arrives back home or he’s in the kitchen making an absolute mountain of pop tarts. He’s the one that comes closest to leaking Peter’s Spider-Man identity because he has no social awareness and just wants to wrap the Man of Spiders in a bear hug

9. The class break for lunch. There’s an ungodly amount of coffee machines in the cafeteria. Everyone is talking about Peter. Flash is talking shit. Clint then proceeds to drop out of the vents to ask Peter about either Mario Kart or babysitting his kids, potentially both. Clint then realises the tour was today, apologises and goes back into the vents. Peter can’t even muster up the energy to be embarrassed

10. As the tour continues, Flash is getting more vocal about his dislike for all this. There’s a 50/50 chance he’s going to get physically violent with Peter. If he doesn’t, he’ll ask Tony Stark why he’s let Peter lie about all this stuff only to be told harshly that Peter is Tony’s kid or something similar. The bullying will be discovered and Flash will be kicked out. If he does get violent with Peter, one of the Avengers will stop him, Tony will defend Peter while revealing that Peter is his kid or something similar in the process, then will kick Flash out

I just described to you an ungodly number of fics beat by beat. And people don’t just read one of them and call it a day; we consume each and every one of them despite knowing the exact plot and having read it a gazillion times

And I think that these fics are the most obvious example of the fact that people don’t care about the repeated use of tropes or clichés or plotlines; if they like it, they’ll like it. They’ll be willing to read those tropes a million times over, even if they know what’ll happen at every turn. And that proves that it’s not the use of tropes that matters, it’s the way you use the tropes. Even if it’s just a new way of wording it, people will enjoy it. It doesn’t have to be completely new or original, it just has to be out there

I'm going to be honest, life has been kind of shit the past few weeks for me, so I apologize if that change of mood shows in this chapter. Ive been trying to finish it for 3 weeks now. Still, I hope its somewhat entertaining! <3

Why now?

That's all you can think as you lay in bed, reflecting about today and the events leading up to it all.

Out of all the times to have a panic attack, it had to be today. Out on a mission. The first one with Loki. Out of all the bad guys it could have been, why one that apparently knows you.

Was it true?

The things that guy said, were they true? Were your fears justified after all? You rack your brain until you can no more, a pounding headache telling you to stop. With a groan you sit down in the shower and let the water ground you further.

What led you to sitting in your shower, questioning life once again and feeling beyond humiliated, was a meeting. The biggest you have attended since the one voting you as an official Avenger. It was the same for Loki. All Avengers were required to attend said meeting. Apart from Wanda and Vision who were excused since they were fighting terrorists on the other half of the planet. Even some high ranked Agents, such as Hill and Coulson, were there. Not to mention the armada of security.

Somehow the date and details got leaked and the outcome was frightening. They stormed the whole first floor of the tower, the street was packed full of paparazzi and news teams. Even the next door buildings were full of them as they attempted to film into the briefing room. Poor Happy was so stressed. His nemesis Bert was right next door, leaning out the window from the building next to the tower. When Happy spotted him, he almost ripped the window off its hinges.

"Bert! I see you Bert!", he yelled and threw a stapler after him but Bert just closed the window and continued taking pictures, "Bert you son of a bitch!", he growled and stormed off. Steve already opened his mouth but Sam clapped his shoulder, "Dont test him. I think he's about ready to snap. The kid's not here anyway.".

The actual meeting started when Fury arrived. It was rather boring until it came to the votes. You shot Loki a few glances, he looked very disinterested and like he would rather not see all these people.

Despite the not so great interactions with him that far, you voted for him. Anything else would have been rather childish, he is a good asset after all.

Clint, Tony, Maria and Phil voted against it, which is fair enough you figured. Fury was holding off on voting as was Steve. Thor, Scott, Sam, Bruce and Nat voted for him. Bruce said he believes Loki’s story that he was indeed not in control of his actions and that he deserves this opportunity to show who he really is. Nat gave the reason that she'd be a hypocrite if she didn't give him the same opportunity she got, trying to wipe out the red of her ledger. Thor was an obvious yes, vouching for Loki repeatedly and assuring he will keep an eye on his brother.

Loki seemed surprised that so many actually believe in him and give him a chance. Bruce's words especially let his eyes soften. But of course, only for the briefest of moments.

The votes have decided, Loki is an official Avenger now but is to be accompanied by Thor since he could handle him. Just in case. Of course Loki was not happy about that restriction and tried to bargain, but with Fury making that decision, there was no arguing.

Before anybody could flee the room, Steve announced a training session with everybody. Since it was the first time the whole new squad was gathered. Even though you were painfully annoyed at him, it was important.

Working as a team and being able to trust each individual team member is essential for the functioning of this unique combined force. And it was only half as bad as you expected it to be.

You had one revelation; Loki fighting with his magic and not just daggers was truly a sight to behold. The concentrated clench of his jaw, the raven hair falling into his sweaty face as green wisps of magic swirled around him were nothing short of breathtaking.

Magic in general was fascinating to you.

Wanda used to show you what she can do and distract you from your wandering thoughts while she still lived at the tower. Both of you were in a dark place, mentally, and those late nights of laying on the rooftop, bundled up in blankets as red magic formed whole movies of pictures above you were essential to your new life. It was the start of you letting go of the past and embracing the present and future, even if the trauma and sadness never fully disappeared. She was no different, the loss she experienced pained her deeply and both of you agreed, it never fully goes away, but it gets better. For her, meeting and falling in love with Vision was a big step in letting go of the past. Which made you a lot more anxious since you never took a chance when it came to romance.

But that's a train of thought for another night.

After the meeting and training, nothing interesting happened, until yesterday when Steve called Thor, Loki and you to an office. It was brought to your attention that you will go on a mission the next day, alongside the godly brothers. He explained that usually, it would have been Thor and you, but since Loki needs to get out on the field, it was the perfect opportunity.

The mission sounded simple; clear out a warehouse full of hydra weapons. It already turned out to be a challenge when Steve told you that a cartel had spotted it first, so you had to deal with a warehouse full of armed mobsters.

Nobody could have prepared you for the actual problem though.

The journey there was nothing unusual, Thor and you blabbered about everything and nothing as Loki sat on the seat furthest away from you two. You pulled up the chopper and landed it on a field. After Thor got out the layout of the warehouse, you discussed the way to approach this mission. The brothers went to the back entry while you focus on the main entrance.

Your ways parted and the coms were turned on. Loading your gun, you sneaked inside, taking cover behind a wall. Silently, you knocked out two of them as they were trying to go outside. "Took out two.", you whispered into the mic. "We have eyes on five of them.", Thor answered. "Good, keep an eye on them, I will try to move further." "Understood."

Slowly, you sneaked closer, taking out another one that spotted you. "I'm in the main room, took out one more along the way.", you confirmed. "Perfect. The group remains unaware." Just as you were about to answer, a big dude walks out of a small sideroom. You were worried about this exact thing. "Who do we have here? Y/n L/n, better known as Medusa. You have made quite the fuss over that one time.", he smirks with silver teeth. You scrutinized him, trying to make sense of his words. Trying to remember him since he obviously knows you.

You heard asgardian armours creaking behind, the boys got ready for action. They knew something was wrong since you did not roger the last information. The dude looked over his shoulder briefly before looking back at you. "So it is true, you don't have any memory of the past. It's a shame, you were rather good.", he chuckled.

Every muscle in your body went rigid, his words made the hair on the back of your neck stand up. Your biggest fear, set ablaze in the middle of a mission. "Y/n, do you know this guy?", Thor laid a hand on your shoulder which made you flinch.

You looked at him, mirroring his shocked expression.

"I- No, I.. Thor I don't remember.", your lip quivered, your heart thundered against your ribs. Your body went into freeze mode. You saw and heard everything, a gun clicking and being pointed in your face, heavy steps echoed through the big storage room, but you just couldn't move. The next few moments are a blur, your panic and fear overtook you as Loki disarmed the man, Thor knocked two who came running out the side. You crumpled to the floor, pulling your knees to your chest, wheezing. It feelt like the floor was swallowing you, your body in the constant motion of falling. Breathing got harder and harder, your lungs felt too big for your body. Everything felt out of place, the wrong size and your ears were ringing painfully loud.

It was clear to you that you had to calm down, that you were hyperventilating, but you couldn't snap out of it. The questions were crushing you like a bug.

Where does he know you from?

Why do you know a person like him?

"..y/n... calm down-..."

What did he mean?

"...need to breathe... hey!"

Did he..?

You winced at the hand meeting your knee, drawing them even closer, which wasn't really possible.

"Y/n. What is the matter?" Thor's voice made it through to you. You weakly lifted your head to look at him, holding your breath in shock instead of breathing too fast. He looked worried. "You are shaking. Y/n, what is wrong?", he observed and rubbed your upper arms in an attempt to warm you. Poor innocent Thor. You couldn't help but let a broken sob escape you, the humiliation of the situation settling in.

You just had a panic attack.

In the middle of a mission.

While a gun was pointed at you.

In front of not only Thor but also Loki, who you haven't even properly talked to. He can't stand you already, this will only make it worse.

"Talk to me. Are you hurt?", Thor asked softly while rubbing your knee in a comforting manner. You shook your head, burying it back between your knees.

"You have to breathe Agent.", the low baritone of the dark prince made your stomach flip. You squeezed your eyes shut, but you could still see the guy in front of you. Article after article of your research about your nickname. You already had it before Haydra took you, so you forgot its origin. When you got taken in by the others, you started researching Medusa and her history. What you found started your fears. The fear that your younger self sympathized with that character for a particular reason.

"Agent.", his voice rang in your ears again. Only then did you realize you were breathing rapidly again, mouth opened to take bigger gasps. The words from the guy echoed in your mind, trying to block them out, you pressed your palms flat to your ears, but it was no use. They were just as loud.

You yelped when you suddenly felt a hand press on your mouth, another pried your hand from one of your ears. "Deep breaths, come on. Breath in for four." You looked at him panicked but he kept a stern expression, "Through your nose, breathe in for four seconds. Now.". You did as you were told, despite counting being harder than it should have been. "Hold for seven.", he removed his hand from your mouth, the grip on your wrist grew softer. After seven seconds he said, "Now out of your mouth for eight."

You repeated the whole process once more and followed every step as you felt your heart rate slow down. You hesitantly opened your eyes and saw Loki in front of you, his eyes were filled with something you identified as deprecation. " 'm sorry", you mumbled as you chewed your cheek.

Out of all the people and out of all days, it had to be when he joined in.

"No need to be sorry, just keep breathing. 4 7 8.", he let go of you completely but his watch on your form got more intense.

As you kept breathing, the guys took care of the rest. The walk back to the chopper was silent. You let Thor fly while you sat back and thought about everything that went wrong. And every possibility on how that dude knew you. Occasionally Thor checked in with you and you half heartedly confirmed your well being. Loki brought you some water and sat back in the cockpit. You gulped that water down like a thirsty camel.

The worry never stopped though.

With all those mobsters, including the one that attacked you, in the back of the chopper, you didn't feel very safe. Even though Loki put a spell on all of them, keeping them unconscious as long as needed.

After a flight that felt like an eternity, you arrived back home and made a quick exit straight to your room. A hot shower was what you needed.

Unbeknownst to you, Thor and Loki took off again after handing over most of the suspects. Except one.

You've been with valkyrie for 4 and a half years now. Everything was going great, until it wasn't.

You slowly started to notice stuff, like she was getting distant and spending less and less time with you. At first you though she was just really busy with work. But you also noticed she was spending a lot more time with Thor. You didn't want to be the annoying and jealous girlfriend that never want there partner to hang out with there friends, but lately she's been spending all her free time with thor and you just worried she was gonna live you for him.

You tried to bring it up a few time but she either changed subject or tell you that it was nothing. Then 3 times she was late to date nights, her excuse. "I was with thor and i didn't see the time pass.

Then one day you had enough you were tired of being left out all the time. You thought about it for a while now and you're gonna break up with her. It made you so sad but you were sure she was cheating on you.

You waited for her in your living room, It was 22h30 and she wasnt home, she Was supposed to be home at 20h00. You tried calling her, but she did not pick up. You started pacing the room thinking that something could have happened to her, that she was hurt or worse... Right when you started thinking of the worst scenarios you heard the front door open and close. You turned around to see who add just came in. You saw Val approaching you with a big smile “you're late again” you said dodging her embrace. “I know, I'm sorry, I was with...” “let me guess, Thor.” you cut her off.

“hmm yes, sorry I didn't see the time pass” she said trying to kiss you again. you dodged once again “you always do this Val, I'm tired of it.” she looked at you confused. “What do you mean.” “you come home super late, worrying me every time, just to barge in sometime drunk stating that you were with Thor.”

you said in a sad angry tone. “I don't always do this.” she said, you scuffed tears bringing your eyes. “Val, tell me, when was the last time we spent a relaxed night together or went on a date or did any couple stuff.” You look at her as she closed and opened her mouth, but nothing came out. “that's what I thought.” you said tears leaking out of your eyes. You flop down on the couch putting your face in your hands. “Hey, look I'm sorry I promise I'll try to spend more time with you.” You looked her in the eyes and sighed. “Are you cheating on me with Thor.” “What? No! I'm not cheating on you.” she said looking sincere. “I don't know if I can believe you.” “Please I'm telling you the truth.” you looked at her skeptically. “OK, Please wait till Tuesday, I promise you'll understand.” she said. “Why?” “Please, just trust me.” you sigh again “fine.” “Thank you.” It was Monday, so you had four days to wait.

Val was even more distant as the days went by. She also seemed more stressed than usual. You really felt like she was hiding something from you.

Tuesday finally came, you were in your apartment/ house when you got a text from Val. It was an address, you looked it up and it was a park. You wonder what she was planning to do in the park? She also asked you to wear something nice.

You got ready in a few minutes, it was summer, so you wore a light blue dress that you thought looked pretty.

You got there and you saw valkyrie waiting for you, you walked towards her. “What are we doing here?” you asked. “you'll see” she said smirking.

She led you to a little gazebo, it was beautiful loads of light hanging from it with loads of beautiful flowers. And it had an amazing view of the sea. “Oh my God Val did you do this.” You said you were amazed at the decoration. “I did with a little bit of help of course.” she said proudly. “But why?” you ask. “I want to ask you something.” “You did all this just to ask me something.” You were looking at the amazing view, so you didn't see what Val was doing. “Well, it's a very important question.” “What is it?” You ask curiously as to what could be this important. “Turn around” she asked, you did just that your hand flew up to cover your mouth when you saw her.

She was down on one knee holding a little box with a beautiful diamond ring. Tears welled up in your eyes. “we've been together for four years and 175 days and every second of this time spent with you was amazing and I would love to spend the rest of my life with you. So, Y/N Y/L/N, will you marry me?”

You were speechless for a few seconds. “I-I um.” you stuttered worrying about. Seeing the worry on her face you snapped out of it. “Yes yes!! Of course, I'll marry you!” you said jumping up and down. Her face lit up as she put the ring on her finger, got up on her two feet and kissed you deeply. “I love you.” you said pulling away." I love you too so much.”

||. NGL ma moot, Thor's best kept secret is his own heart.

He doesn't share who he is and what he's feeling with anyone. Not his family, not his girlfriend/love of his life, not his longest friends, not his earthen allies. Even when he wants to connect with someone (for instance: Steve Rogers), it's an entire ordeal in and of itself just to give that person the bare minimum of the vulnerability they're asking of him. He won't speak of his own hardships, he won't speak of his own struggles. He might speak his thoughts and feelings to you on a normal day, sure, and he isn't the sort to try and hide his broodiness... but he'll rarely, if ever, bring it up first on his own, and he definitely will control the thread of conversations surrounding it either way. He will not talk about what he does not want to talk about, and he will end the conversation with something as simple as standing up if he decides the topic is something for Thor alone to worry about. Unless a concern ultimately has something or other to do with what the other person/greater whole is worried about, most of the time you will NEVER hear Thor speak of it in the terms of "I, Thor, am worried about this." / "I, Thor, care very deeply about this." (i think the closest he came to that in phase 1-3 was "give up your poisonous dream. you come home." @ loki in avengers and even then,,,,) And you will find that even after months (or in Jane and Steve's case, even 4 years) of near constantly being around this guy that, of him calling you "friend" and seeming to have a good time in your company, that at the end of the day ....you don't really know much of anything about him that you didn't already know or quickly learn when you first met. You never have. And he shows no signs of giving you those pieces of himself anytime soon, either.

Ironically, he fully believes that his mentions of vague things that are important to him ARE him being honest... because when you don't trust anyone to catch you when you fall and feel you have to do it all on your own, even admitting there is a problem is, in itself, a big deal. Even if you're only eluding to that fact. (Thinking specifically of, in AGE OF ULTRON (2015), Steve Rogers wanted Thor to lean on him after their Wanda visions. Thor...didn't do that, to say the least. And what he did instead was elude to Steve that what he did see in the dream was deeply troubling to him. Enough to need to go find answers elsewhere. And while to Thor that WAS him telling Steve the truth and being honest with his closest avengers companion, to Steve... that was just Thor locking him out. And not giving either Thor or Steve to remain on the same wavelength that they'd been on the whole rest of the movie prior to that. Steve later says "My teammates sometimes keep secrets from me. I was kinda hoping Thor might be the exception....")

Other than that for an actual more traditional secret.... I like to think his family was pretty stringent about keeping the general Asgardian public from knowing Loki didn't have special powers when they were growing up. It's a long-winded headcanon to explain but tl;dr if all royals of the Odin line have powers, and then Loki - "the youngest born son of Odin" - suddenly DIDN'T you wouldn't really want that information leaking out to everyone. For the safety of the family's reputation, but also ultimately for Loki's too. I don't think he enjoyed keeping this secret and I don't think he ever felt that Loki's "defect" was ever something so wrong that Loki ought be ashamed of it either. Especially since Loki makes up for it in spades by thinking outside of the box and learning magic. And generally just being a fantastic kid that Thor loves dearly. But Thor also understands politics and the importance of public images... ESPECIALLY for his family, so.... he did what he had to do.

1. In the first grade, I won a contest where you had to pick out a name for a clown. The clown's name was Tutti Fruitti, but I don't remember what the prize was for naming him.

2. If you put the word "unicorn" in the name of a product of some type, like a unicorn cupcake, bath bomb, or what have you, I will buy it immediately.

3. I used to live in an old house that had supremely good vibes. It was kind of like it was benevolently haunted. I had a dream about the old man who built the house in the 40s; he wanted to know why the hell there was a hole in the ceiling of the bedroom (roof leak). When I explained it, he was happy to know that I was fixing it up. Later on, I made a comment about wanting to put lilies of the valley in a shady part of the yard, only for a few to spontaneously appear there the next spring. Thanks, ghost gardener! 👀

4. I binge watched the whole first season of Metalocalypse about a year after it came out, after some rough mental health stuff. 🙃 Laughing at that dumb show and subsequently reading all of the homoskeksual fanfictions greatly improved my quality of life, as ridiculous as that sounds. And yes, I am An Old.

5. I live near Detroit and I kind of love it. Favorite places - the art museum, Sugar House, Castalia.

6. There are at least 1000 photos of my damn cats on my phone. Here, have one. Their names are Odin and Thor. Odin is the catloaf. 🍞

7. If you look in my bedroom, you will find a large wooden box filled with way too many little bottles of perfume oil. I don't douse myself in them or anything, I just have a stupid number of different kinds. Mainly from Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab. 👀 Favorite notes - lavender, tonka, vanilla, milk/cream notes, honey, cardamom, small doses of patchouli, opoponax, galbanum, smoky notes, stuff that just straight up smells like candy. Not all at the same time, haha.

8. My best friend died last year and I find myself telling people small anecdotes about her as if she were still here. They never knew her, so it feels harmless? Kind of odd though?

9. If I could be anything, I would be a fluffy cat who lives in a used bookstore.

10. My current commute to work is two hours and 40 minutes round trip. It's not even an especially high paying job that I love or anything lolol I was just beyond burnt out in my last job and took the first way out that presented itself. I'm fucking terrified to ever have a gap in my resume, so here I am. 🙃

There's more happening

-we anticipate the bugs to start going up there any moment now and it is late at night he got some rest when he needs to sleep but there's a big announcement and it's huge gigantic and involves all of you and wants you don't know

-we estimate around 3:00 or 4:00 a.m. the scent will reach Florida and a bunch of these bugs will exit up the tunnels the security forces are being dispatched mostly pseudo empire and you're going to be hauled in if you go near them and they're going to call more if you do it and we're going to be there too kicking the s*** out of useless people

-we are also in receipt of an estimate on the evacuation we are beginning to perform gorilla movements. And we are pulling stuff out and a son took a contingent down and ask people if they are ready to go it was with ships and no I was thinking about it though and then he said they all kind of know each other he knows about that he didn't do it but he doesn't know here but here we go it's got an idea. So the grabbing all these rental trucks and they're getting the hell out of there and the same one way to California and the U-Haul guys like okay you can go out to these other cities and grab more U-Hauls it's probably going to buy them so sitting there talking to them he says why don't you buy them I said why I said it goes one way I won't get it back and I'll do the bill of sale and a title it's not making a ton of money but it's working and people are doing it he's going to grab more and it's going all over the place the selling the Penske trucks and other trucks Taylor rental they're going to rent something backhoe take a backhoe with you so they're going to buy another stuff all over the place and take it off with it and usually you can tell grab it or use it it's got like boogers and gum and other things we don't talk about poo poo. And concerned in businesses you know trucks and trucks and trucks and stuff all the stuff that's sitting there that you're going to need when you building something it's apartments are going like madness so they started calling you they got these trucks and they're leaving in huge caravans going out the gate giant numbers it says I don't like the empire and I don't like these clones and you're not either one and even though Tommy Allen was a fumbling guy I got through college kind of. Tommy f was doing it but he was trying to do all sorts of stuff to people and you didn't tell me that so they're moving out saying that's good and we're rolling he says you can have a six pack of beer but make sure you get like a submarine sandwich or two and other stuff like that snacks I mean these places are going to be emptied out and stuff so they're moving it out did I give him the snacks with him and they're driving around and I'll tell you what it's disgusting that taking dumps everywhere it says please well I guess it'll fertilize the grass taking leaks the same here have that after all I've done for you corky make a list of what you want out there where you go for all that stuff we have so we have this huge list come in from a bunch of people and literally there's this huge area there in and needed all sorts of stuff and they have money and everything so we're going to go out there it's starting to not be bad

So there's a whole bunch of these naked guys driving and some people are letting him in and it's pseudo empire thinking to take what they make and stuff they're driving down and they that lifts they're paying thousands and thousands of these tractors to Miami you having a good time and goes you can't let him get away with it and all these girls are showing up and they're trying to teach them the shuffle and start craving naked and they're talking to the cops sometimes saying it's the nude bomb and this is bugs are eating clothing and you have to leave the clothing and they start eating you don't believe you and see what happens some head bug bites so the cops got rude and they let them go

it could also be that jq was never in the running. Like the amount of times ppl have said this person is getting cast but then in the end it’s completely random. Like even for guardians of the galaxy and Thor 4. And especially with FF ppl have been getting so much wrong info. Like Jon watts supposed to first direct it but then he left, and someone else was supposedly casted for sue storm but in reality that person was never even in the running. Again I’m not sure how true the streets are but unless it’s announced by marvel I wouldn’t buy it and would say they’re just rumors

I feel like Marvel is usually pretty good at that though. The fans are pretty good at figuring it out. There’s so many people behind-the-scenes at marvel that shit gets leaked all the time. So he could’ve had the part and maybe he turned it down? Maybe he was offered it and said no

The First THOR

I was rewatching sections of THOR today, the fourth film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, released all the way back in 2011. Seems like it was only yesterday. I was barely a year into college, for starters.

Directed by Kenneth Branagh, his only MCU venture, I actually always liked the first THOR a great deal. When THOR: RAGNAROK came out some 6 years later, I remember a lot of people online were very, very quick to throw this film and the much-maligned sequel - 2013's THOR: THE DARK WORLD - out of the way in their praise for Taika Waititi's more kooky-kozmik spin on the character. But then after some time - and a few AVENGERS movie appearances, Thor made one more solo return. Waititi went and directed one more Thor movie, THOR: LOVE AND THUNDER. It came out this past summer, for those of you who may be living under a rock. Unlike RAGNAROK, LOVE AND THUNDER wasn't... So well-liked...

And apparently the first two Thor movies were much better now, because they were "more serious" or whatever. Felt more like fantasy movies. There are those who still like the two Taika movies and have little to no love for the first two Thor tales...

And then there's me... I actually legit really like the first THOR, there are things I quite like about THOR: THE DARK WORLD, a good half of THOR: RAGNAROK was quite awesome to me, and THOR: LOVE AND THUNDER has its moments but feels like a generic MCU movie and not the colorful galactic high fantasy adventure it could've been. It could've been a combination of general MCU fatigue post-AVENGERS: ENDGAME and the apparent lack of time spent on these movies these days. That Kevin Feige and company just had to churn-churn-churn them out to meet the 3-to-4 a year quota in addition to what seems like a gazillion Disney+ Marvel shows...

It's no surprise that following Bob Chapek's ouster from the Disney CEO position this past November (same time as BLACK PANTHER: WAKANDA FOREVER's opening) that there are talks of whittling down Marvel's overall slate. Both movies and TV shows. That's good, especially now that Chapek's aggressive pivot to streaming during and after COVID-19's worst months (see also, how the animated features from Disney Feature and Pixar were handled) is waning. Returning CEO Bob Iger is seemingly laser-focused on theaters again, and surprisingly, less quantity when it comes to the ever-expanding MCU. Not quality over quantity per se, because it's all subjective, but at least not a glut of stuff and more time for the crews to work on these things. Delaying THE MARVELS to this coming November, judging by some shots in that recently-released teaser, seem to indicate that they may be getting back on the right track. Leaks of VFX artists not being treated well and being crunched also help illuminate what's been going on, and now a lot of the world knows... It's not a good look!

The first THOR was made and released during Phase One of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which of course capped off with THE AVENGERS in May of 2012, which changed the series' whole game and trajectory almost entirely... You could say a particular "house style" came to engulf all the following films, post-AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON.

But THOR was made before that, and as such, there's now some newfound admiration for the Phase One movies. They may be a little rough around the edges in their construction and setting up of larger events down the road, but another look reveals films that actually kind of look like *films* (when I rewatched sections of IRON MAN 2 not too long ago, I was struck by how less flat it looked in comparison to something like BLACK WIDOW or SPIDER-MAN: NO WAY HOME) and some even bare the distinctive stamps of their respective directors. They show why we all got into this whole series in the first place.

Branagh brings a big, epic Shakespearean scope to his very golden Asgard, with plenty of Dutch angles to spare. His film, written by Ashley Edward Miller, Zack Stentz, and Don Payne, actually quite embraces the space-fantasy stuff nicely. It doesn't write the weirder things off with that later-era glibness that the series is now known for, it saves the "this is kinda weird!" silliness for the fish-out-of-water sequences set on Earth, where that kind of thing is supposed to work. Even then, the film is quite funny and witty with that, it does not overdo it to the point where you're taken out of this fantasy world meets real world mesh. Told as a classic humility tale with Mjinor written as an Excalibur-type test of worthiness and true strength, there's still an emotional core to Thor and Loki's dynamic, their family, and the world of Asgard around them. I also always dug Thor and Jane Porter's chemistry too, and Thor's relationship with the other major human players.

While THOR doesn't go as far-out with the fantasy/cosmic stuff as it probably should've, it still functions fine as a movie that holds your hand a little bit and carefully steps you into this side of the MCU, after the fairly normal and grounded likes of the two IRON MAN movies and THE INCREDIBLE HULK. Technology and science are largely those films' game, and THOR goes into magic and otherworldly creatures and realms. I usually dislike using this word in any context regarding superhero movies, but there's a "grounded"-ness to THOR that works in its favor. Not in the dull post-DARK KNIGHT sense where everything superhero-y and comic book-y is entirely stripped from the picture, but in a human sense. That even the comically heightened realities of even older superhero films had, ironically. You feel like you're with these humans and are part of this world, more so than many later cosmic MCU movies, where they quickly filmed the things and then quickly CG'ed in all of the stuff that's supposed to be spectacular and wonderful - and served it up with that aforementioned sense of humor that tends to undercut what should be cool and out-there and captivating... While also following this template of sorts that I like to call a hybrid of Joss Whedon's quippy AVENGERS movie stuff and the workmanlike beats of the Russo Brothers' movies. Perhaps the 2016 release CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR, often criticized for its rather blah color scheme and cinematography, solidified all of this going forward. Even films like the BLACK PANTHER standalone adventures and ETERNALS, which feel more director-driven than usual for this franchise, still kind of struggle to get out of this sticky trap.

But something like THOR? Not so much! And it's a refreshing revisit, even in sections. On its own, it's a fine fantasy character in the real world adventure.

Review: The Gentlemen

Hey, Its been too long without anything and I hate that. I reread my old posts. I made myself feel bad. Anyway, finally, a movie review for the everyman.

Warning: Minor Spoilers ahead

Full disclosure, I’ve seen this movie 3 times now, the most recent being a few days ago. I’ll probably watch it again soon with other friends (there’s your TL;DR, it’s GOOD).

Directed by Guy Ritchie, starring Charlie Hunnam, Mathew McConaughey, and Hugh Grant, The Gentlemen paints a picture of the illegal weed trade in England. Now, you may be thinking, “One of these things is not like the others.” You’d be right. But it’s exactly that that gives the American some of his best dynamics. Mickey manages to both standout as The American and blend in as England’s greatest Cannabis Farmer. He keeps that amazing calm throughout the entire film with the exception of when they show his backstory and his Vader in a hallway moment. See, he wants to retire so he’s looking for a buyer of his trade. But not just any buyer and anyone who tries to weasel in on the deal will face the consequences. Raymond, Mickey’s right hand (played by Charlie Hunnam), has to deal with errands to fix some of the problems and track down who’s been sharing secrets.

A little late in my recount, enter Hugh Grant. All of this is being told to us through Hugh Grant’s character, Fletcher. A weasel himself, Fletcher has gathered enough intel to write a whole script and wants some cash to present it to Miramax (yes, really). The dynamic between Fletcher and Raymond is mazing. The way Fletcher flirts with Ray just to poke the bear plays so well and really digs in to show us exactly what these guys are like.

Now, here’s where things get weird. The story is told through the lens of Fletcher’s script as well as a rap music video and actually showing us what’s happening. there are parts where it’s easy to get lost in what Fletcher knows or not. There’s also how ridiculous it sounds that they could use a rap video to tell the story and still be good. Much like Fletcher and Ray’s banter, the video The Toddlers’ video introduces them and how they operate and they’re true style (which includes elegant VERY English tracksuits). It also brings them in a secondary monkey wrench. But don’t worry, we get to see that monkey wrench fix a major leak under the guidance of Collin Farrel’s, Coach. Just looking at this man you can tell he is not to be messed with. That said, he’s mostly just a father figure trying to keep his Toddlers on the straight and narrow.

The characters have such good dynamics together and even in serious moments they an find humorous banter without falling out of the seriousness of the situation (looking at you Thor 4). The action is perfectly timed and feels so realistic without being boring. It has some shocks and twists but never so far you stop believing it. It’s so British but as an American it doesn’t feel out of place for me. Overall fantastic fun and just a great piece of storytelling.
