So now I’m slightly obsessed with the layers on show in this scene. Not only do we have a subversion of the ‘sponge bath’ trope so prevalent in Thai BL by having the character not actually being sick, but also Pat’s absolute fluency in consent.

Often in the shows where we have a sponge bath, the person receiving has not actually consented as they are too ill to do so. Here, that issue is completely swept away by Pat outright asking for one. So, Pat is not attempting to push a flirty agenda by touching Pran, but rather by giving Pran consent to touch him.

And Pat doesn’t trick him or guilt him into it. He makes no attempt to keep up the facade of being sick once Pran has actually sat down; it’s obvious that this is part of the game and Pran has a choice to keep playing, which he, of course, makes. However, despite obviously trying to get Pran hot under the collar, Pat still doesn’t touch him, he doesn’t even guide Pran’s hand when Pran asks him where he’s hot. He gives Pran complete control over the situation.

After that initial touch, he checks back on Pran. Yes, he’s hoping to see Pran a little flustered but he’s also checking that he’s still in the game. It’s only after Pran gives him that “I could do this all night, try me” expression in response that he then ups the ante, although it’s still just verbally. Pat only touches Pran when he stops him.

We then see this reversed in the next part of the scene, where even after Pran has literally shoved the boy on the floor and crawled on top of him, he still doesn’t actually touch him until Pat goads him to with that “What if I want to be stubborn? What then, hmm?”

This show is honestly the gift that just keeps giving.

fun fact: i saw these moments divorced from any context in a fanvid before i started watching the show in earnest and because of the hospital setting in one and the seemingly loopy hutch in the other, i at the time assumed that this was a running gag over a single episode where starsky was keeping track of when hutch needed a dose of his pain meds, or something. imagine my surprise at learning that david starsky was instead feeding his partner 1) an entire clove of garlic and 2) a metal bullet
