(Lava) Bomb on the Mountain (volcano)
Tumblr media
South Sister is Oregon's 3rd tallest peak. It's a stratovolcano 10,363 ft (3,158 m) tall, part of the Three Sisters complex which includes dozens of smaller volcanoes and several older eroded mountains.
Tumblr media
The upper 2,000 feet or so (~650 m) is a 20,000 year-old cinder cone, the result of a fire-fountain-type eruption of lava. One of the common features of that style of eruption are lava bombs - chunks of liquid lava flung through the air that cool in streamlined and elongated shapes. The upper flank of the mountain is very steep, and makes for slow climbing through cinders. Slope pitches average 30˚ in this area, and get as high as 58˚!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Perched at random on this slope is probably the largest lava bomb I've ever seen! It's probably about a meter across and shows the streamlined, elongated nature of a bomb very well. I'm not sure why it's still sitting at that precarious location, but up close you can see the vesicular texture of erupted lava (basaltic andesite). This might be classified (yes, there are sub-classifications of lava bombs - geologists love classifications!) as a breadcrust bomb because it looks almost like a crusty bread with cracked crust. These are very common on volcanoes like this. It's hard to see in this picture, but amidst the vesicles (bubbles) in the rock are numerous plagioclase feldspar crystals ~0.5-1 mm across.

Anyway, volcanoes are cool.

today we took down our Samhain altar...
Tumblr media
...and put up our Yule altar!
Tumblr media
my favorite thing about the altar in the community house is watching as things get added to it all the time. we leave a lot of space when we set it up but by the time we take it down it's crammed with offerings!
blessed Yule!

Some eye contact in the beginning, mostly animation, or video of people's hands. Properly closed captioned in English.
Summary: An overview of both the history and science of the Indigenous North American agricultural practice of planting maize, climbing beans, and squash together in the same plot, dating back 1000+ years.
(Maize provides a stalk for the beans to climb, beans grow up the stalk, and keep the wind from blowing it over and also fix nitrogen in the soil, squash spreads over the ground, where its broad, prickly leaves inhibit weeds, keep the soil from drying out, and keep raccoons away from the ripe maize [They hate the feel of the prickly leaves under their paws])

Highland fling
All that sunshine we had in Edinburgh …? It was just a fluke. We spent Sunday in the Highlands, where the true essence of Scotland revealed itself.
We're staying at the Ballachulish Hotel (middle photo), just a few miles from the peaks of Aonach Dubh, Beinn Fhada and Gearr Aonach - the mountains known collectively as the Three Sisters of Glencoe.
We hiked the valley spread out like a colorful blanket laid at the feet of the Sisters. Later, we strolled the picture-perfect streets of the village Glencoe.
Today we're bound for the Isle of Skye.

I get excited when I start to see the corn! I planted peaches and cream corn with beans and squash. This method is known as the “Three Sisters.”
The technique is an ancient indigenous way of companion planting. The corn is the trellis for the pole beans. The beans is the stabilizer and nitrogen fixer for the corn. The squash is ground cover keeping out weeds and dryness.

Blessed by fate and gifted with powers
This is a Maasverse post, and as such, there are spoilers for all Maas series. Proceed with caution.
I know many have have spoken about the Archeron sisters and Starborn heritage at length (this post is essentially the cliff notes version of posts by @silverlinedeyes, @offtorivendell, myself, and probably others), but this has been on my mind since posting Elain’s witch series. I believe the sisters are going to be important together (like the entwined aspects in the witchy Three-Faced Goddess) and will work together, especially with Bryce. In acosf, Amren confirms that they are special, unique:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
She says they were blessed by fate and gifted with powers to match the most powerful High Lord in history…who just so happens to rule the Night Court, which likely absorbed an eighth court, Dusk.
Then, Bryce—human and fae like the three sisters—drops into Prythian at the end of hosab. Bryce bears Theia’s light and is connected to the Dusk Court. We know that Theia was Fionn’s unnamed queen, and the heirlooms she supposedly stole, like the Starsword (Gwydion), belonged to the female heir of her Starborn line.
Tumblr media
We’ve heard about an unnamed female leader or warrior before, haven’t we?
Tumblr media
The unnamed female warrior trapped the Bone Carver’s death-god siblings, and it probably required the use of Starborn heirlooms. History seems to have been twisted for Theia as it was for Elena in Erilea, whose true role in the war was forgotten. What happened to Theia’s line, the second daughter who vanished into the night with Truth-Teller? Where is that line now?
For some reason, Rhysand looks like Ruhn, the male offspring, and Feyre glows like Bryce. Nesta and Cassian’s bargain tattoos resemble the Starborn symbol. Azriel possess a Starborn heirloom, and after hundreds of years, has only relinquished it to one female whose role—appearing like an avenging harpy on the battlefield to bring Hybern to his knees—is already being forgotten like those ancient queens. It may have been Elain’s mighty Sight, a truth teller in its own right, that animated the deadly accuracy of the Starborn blade.
The Bone Carver laid it out nicely for us earlier on to connect these dots, like crumbs of bread:
Her bloodline is long-gone now—though a trace of it still runs through a human line.
Her line is long-gone, but a trace lingers in a human line. What can bring back something that is long-gone? The Cauldron. And who has been reforged by the raw magic of the Cauldron, either through the High Lords or the ancient womb itself? The three sisters for each face of the Goddess. They are paralleled with the female Starborn heir through their mixed heritage and unique connection to Cauldron-Made heirlooms. There is a reason for that. Together, they are blessed by fate, gifted with powers, and reunited with their line at just the right moment in time.
