now we all know the ‘his name is Ed’ scene is important for like an unlimited number of reasons BUT i think my absolute favourite thing about it is the exact phrasing of it. like it’s one sentence, but the choice of words is so important. and the best part about it is the name that Stede chooses to use.
He doesn’t call him Blackbeard. He doesn’t even call him Edward, ‘cause that’s not who he is to Stede.
His name is Ed. he chose to use the name that Ed gave to Stede the moment he woke up. he chose to use the name that Stede knows him by, not the name the entire world knows him by. because who gives a shit about the rest of the world?
Not Blackbeard. Not Edward. Not Blackie or The Kraken or whatever else. Stede’s in love with him and it’s as simple as saying his name. and his name is Ed.

i see you “byers+mike have had their memories snatched up” and raise you “will byers will have his memories snatched up”
consider. throughout the entirety of the show, there’s a huge emphasis on memories. kali tells el to channel her anger into her powers, and to think of times in her life where she was truly angry (treatment of her mother, jealousy of max, lab abuse). el also uses this technique to close the gate, too. when the byers and mike are trying to break will out of his possession, they share memories (which, works to free him, but briefly). this happens, similarly, with billy in s3; el recounts memories of his mother, which allows him to escape from the mf’s hold. then, in s4, we see this a ton. max thinks of good times in her life to escape from vecna (the first time) and tries, again, to use these happy memories to survive in her second match against him. el goes into her memories in order to regain her powers, and she even revives max using her love for her from memories between the two.
and what else is kinda funky about this is how all of these situations end up with our boy vecna’s plans getting foiled (except for maybe max’s second vecnaifcation). so, assuming he’s like smart and generally competent, he would possibly do something to eradicate this problem involving him and these kid’s memories, right?
that’s where will byers comes in. he’s been established to be the center of s5. the will-has-powers theory is still alive and well. vecna probably wants something from him. and, perhaps most importantly, venca is still, in some way, in will’s mind.
this idea links to the will-has-powers theory because, assuming these powers may be similar to el’s, lacking important memories would either prevent or make it much harder for will to tap into his abilities, making it easier for venca to do his crap. and, assuming vecna doesn’t wanna kill will (which, personally, i don’t think he does. henry and will have been paralleled a million times, and have a lot in common, on the surface. if we think about how henry’s connections to el made him want her to “join him,” then i can see the same happening here. and, he’s had a million chances to kill will; he was in the upside down for a while, ffs. but he simply hasn’t), locking/taking away memories would be a good alternative that could still allow him to move whatever chess pieces he needs to, including mr william.
the most interesting part of all this, though, is that vecna is still chilling in will’s mind. it’s confirmed, at the end of s4- “i can feel him...it’s strange, knowing now who it was this whole time, but...” so he’s there. cool. awesome. wouldn’t it be so easy to tamper with this kid’s head?? i mean, vecna sees into people’s memories, into their minds, for a good period of time before he actually strikes, so that would easily align with will. and we know he has deep access to will’s memories; its directly confirmed, and the scene where el enters billy’s memories in s3 is notable. venca’s presence is there, for sure, and prominent. in s2, even, their minds began to overlap in a certain way (now-memories, and all that). so either vecna planted these memories within will’s mind as part of his possession, or he automatically was able to gain this sight due to his possession. either way, the hivemind/vecna put memories/insight into the upside down that will wasn’t supposed to have.
who’s to say the inverse couldn’t be done?

“I've had many tears and sorrows, I've had questions for tomorrow, there's been times I didn't know right from wrong. But in every situation, God gave me blessed consolation, that my trials come to only make me strong.
I've been to lots of places, I've seen a lot of faces, there's been times I felt so all alone. But in my lonely hours, yes, those precious lonely hours, Jesus lets me know that I was His own!
Through it all, through it all, I've learned to trust in Jesus, I've learned to trust in God. Through it all, through it all, I've learned to depend upon His Word.
I thank God for the mountains, and I thank Him for the valleys, I thank Him for the storms He brought me through. For if I'd never had a problem, I wouldn't know that he could solve them, I'd never know what faith in God could do.”
