I jerked awake like a fish being yanked into the light. My body ached all over, the bed was soaked in sweat. Opal was standing in the doorway, ghost-white and holding onto the frame, her eyes wide with fears I could not name.

My hand was being held. I turned my head with an effort that made the world spin. A shape stood over me, and I tried to make a noise. It was too large, too solid, a shadow of infinite weight looming like a mountain.

There are things older than monsters, the though half-delirious and then it was just Cai, my brother’s eyes eyes pools of darkness which meant no harm and contained only worry. My hand was in his, the world pain I understood. He sat me up. I drank water, shivering in warmth and cold. I couldn’t remain upright under my own body.
