"A Christmas Carol" Adaptations: Top 5 Saddest Versions of Tiny Tim's Death (long)

Since the Christmas season is almost officially over, and my annual hyperfixation on A Christmas Carol will need to be paused for another year, I decided to make this post while I still can.

These are my votes for the five saddest, most poignant filmed versions of the vision in Christmas Yet to Come of the Cratchits mourning Tiny Tim's death. A scene which fortunately never takes place in the real world thanks to Scrooge's redemption, but which is still heartbreaking as the Ghost shows Scrooge what might happen.

Honorable mentions include the silent graveside scene in Mickey's Christmas Carol (Mickey Mouse crying – enough said), the similar brief yet touching graveside scenes in Scrooge (1970), A Christmas Carol: The Musical (2004), and Scrooge: A Christmas Carol (2022), and the scenes in the 1938 MGM film (mainly for the quiet yet deep grief Gene Lockhart's Bob conveys under the brave face he wears) and the 1999 TV film (mainly for showing Tim's body as Bob sits by his bedside, the first version since 1935 to do so).

Scrooge (1935) (Donald Calthrop as Bob Cratchit, Barbara Everest as Mrs. Cratchit, Sir Seymour Hicks as Scrooge)

This is the most complete rendition of the scene from the book, and it's well done. From the opening as Mrs. Cratchit leaves Tim's bedroom in tears, through the subsequent slow pan through the house's main room, showing the gloomy children and Tim's empty stool and crutch amid gentle music, the poignant tone is established, and it increases after Bob comes home. This Bob avoids breaking down in front of his family, but as he slowly walks up the stairs toward the bedroom, alone, he's suddenly overwhelmed and sobs into his hands. Then he slowly enters the candlelit room, where – in a rare touch that no adaptation would repeat until 1999 – we see Tim's body laid out on the bed in full view. Ever slowly, Bob approaches, sits down, and murmurs "My little child," then kisses Tim's forehead. The whole sequence, underscored by soft choral music, has an air of delicate grief and reverence, similar to the famous scene of Disney's seven dwarfs mourning for Snow White that would premiere two years later. It might seem almost mawkish by modern filmmaking standards, but in an unabashedly old-fashioned and stagy 1930s film, it works. Meanwhile, the unseen Scrooge utters the narrator's words from the book: "Tiny Tim, thy childish essence was from God!" The scene ends with consolation, though, as Bob goes back downstairs and tells his family about Fred's sympathy, then gives his speech about how none of the family will forget Tiny Tim (holding Tim's crutch as he speaks it), and they all gather warmly around him. Dickens would have approved of a scene so faithful to his writing.

A Christmas Carol (2009) (Gary Oldman as Bob Cratchit, Lesley Manville as Mrs. Cratchit, Jim Carrey as Scrooge)

This CGI motion-capture film gives Tiny Tim the short shrift as a character, but it makes this scene effective through its portrayal of the family's raw grief and of Scrooge's horror at what his selfishness has caused. Whether to keep the scene fresh or due to changing social mores about grief, there's much less emphasis than usual on the family trying to be cheerful and hide their pain for each other's sake, and more open emotion. Most of the scene shows the Cratchits at a distance, without close-ups, but the pain can be heard in their voices: Mrs. Cratchit is crying, the daughters are crying, and even teenage son Peter is just barely restraining his tears. Then when Bob arrives, he makes only a brief, feeble attempt at cheerfulness before breaking down sobbing "My little child!" in anguish. Then comes the unforgettable moment, which takes full, rare advantage of the fact that the Cratchits can't see or hear Scrooge: Bob wanders to the stairs, where Scrooge is sitting, and unknowingly on Bob's part, the two men come face to face. Scrooge is horrified by the sight of Bob's exhausted, red-eyed, utterly broken face staring into his own. He longs to comfort him and apologize for failing to save Tim, and chokes out "Bob!" in an anguish-soaked voice – that single syllable may be Jim Carrey's best acting in the film. Yet Bob walks straight through him to go up to the bedroom, where we see just the shadow of Tim's body cast on the wall by the candlelight as Bob sits down and sobs at his bedside. Without losing Dickens' gentle touch, this is probably the most raw rendition of the scene.

A Christmas Carol (1984) (David Warner as Bob Cratchit, Susannah York as Mrs. Cratchit, George C. Scott as Scrooge)

This rendition of the scene is slightly more subdued than the above two, but its "tenderness and depth of feeling" (in the words of this version of Scrooge) stand out all the same, chiefly thanks to the acting of David Warner and Susannah York. As portrayed by York, Mrs. Cratchit is clearly the family's pillar of strength in this version, more so than in others; through her face is weary with grief, she restrains her tears – albeit not without a quiet struggle – and provides support and stability to her family. Meanwhile, Warner's Bob is warm and tender as always, and he tries to be cheerful, but his pain is closer to the surface than his wife's. As he speaks of visiting Tim's grave, he finally breaks down and weeps quietly into his youngest daughter's hair; then he tries to pull himself together and assures his family of how grateful he is to still have all of them, only to break down again while telling them about Fred's sympathy. But Mrs. Cratchit takes gentle command of the moment and encourages her husband: "Tim is part of all of us. For his sake, we must go on living. So long as we love one another, he will always be alive." Bob takes her words to heart, but he adds that surely none of the family will ever forget Tiny Tim, which the children all assure their parents that they never will. "I am a truly happy man" Bob concludes; despite the scene's sadness, we feel that he means it, with such a wonderful, tender family to support him through the loss and to always treasure Tim's memory. This scene stands out for the Cratchits' sheer warmth, tenderness, and quiet strength as they support each other.

Scrooge (1951) (Mervyn Johns as Bob Cratchit, Hermione Baddeley as Mrs. Cratchit, Alastair Sim as Scrooge)

This film is widely considered the greatest cinematic Christmas Carol, so naturally its version of this scene is especially poignant. It opens with a pan through the melancholy room as Peter reads a long passage from the Bible: not the Mark verse quoted in the book, but Psalm 91, which describes God providing strength and refuge. This change enhances young Peter's characterization, I think, showing his effort to support his mother and sisters through the tragedy. But he can only do so much, as we see Mrs Cratchit gaze mournfully at Tim's empty stool and crutch, and as their subsequent dialogue places Peter in closeup and makes his own grief for his little brother evident. When Bob arrives, the script departs from Dickens' dialogue as he tenderly describes his visit to the spot where Tim will be buried. He reveals that as he stood there, he seemed to feel Tim's hand slip into his own, and he felt comforted; he believes Tim's spirit was there, telling him that he's happy now and that the family must stop grieving and try to be happy too. But Mrs. Cratchit can only look at him with her eyes full of tears, and at the sight of her grief, Bob finally gives into his own. "Oh Tim! My Tiny Tim!" he sobs, burying his face in his hands. His wife kneels down and clasps him in her arms, and the scene ends as they hold each other in anguish. The musical score, with a gentle rendition of "Silent Night" underscoring Peter's Bible verse, and a slow version of Tiny Tim's theme – an innocent, music box-like tune – underscoring Bob's speech, adds greatly to the scene's moving effect.

And the #1 rendition of the scene:

The Muppet Christmas Carol (1992) (Kermit the Frog/Steve Whitmire as Bob Cratchit, Miss Piggy/Frank Oz as Mrs. Cratchit, Michael Caine as Scrooge)

Maybe it's sacrilegious to give my preference to a version of this scene where the Cratchits are frogs and pigs. But somehow, the Muppets and Michael Caine give it a poignancy like no other. The Cratchits go through the same motions they did in Christmas Present – Mrs. Cratchit and the children busy preparing dinner in the kitchen, the children all hugging Bob when he arrives, etc. But instead of happily bustling around, Mrs. Cratchit is crying; instead of comically tackle-hugging Bob, the children hug him tenderly and sadly; and rather than from church, Bob has come from the churchyard. He reveals that he chose a gravesite for Tim "where he can see..." but then stops, and explains that it has a view of the ducks on the river, which Tim loved to watch. Kermit's Bob has no "My little child!" breakdown – true to Kermit's character as a leader, he stays strong for his family – but his grief is still very clear. Each time he says "Tiny... Tim," he struggles as if he can hardly bear to say his son's name. Meanwhile, Scrooge is distraught. "Oh Spirit," he pleads, "must there be a Christmas that brings this awful scene? How can we endure it?" Finally, Bob consoles his children, saying "Life is made up of meetings and partings, that is the way of it," and that surely they'll never forget Tiny Tim. The tone of delicate yet deep sadness is only enhanced by the score, which gently reprises Tim's song "Bless Us All" throughout the scene. At the end, the camera slowly zeroes in on Tim's empty chair and crutch by the fireplace, as a horn plays the melody of "And in our prayers and dreams, we ask you bless us all." Making this scene even sadder is its subtext for the Muppets: the recent deaths of Jim Henson and puppeteer Richard Hunt. Kermit/Bob's "meetings and partings" speech is easily just as much about Henson and Hunt as about Tiny Tim. For that reason and others, this has my vote as the most poignant filmed version of Dickens' sad scene.

If you like the app, if you find it easy to use, if it's more accessible to you for any reason at all (INCLUDING THE CHEAP PRICE) i'm so happy for that, more power to you! if it makes it easier for people to approach animation that's great! i just think there are some really really awful features and limitations maybe especially if you never animated some thy in your life. for reference i studied animation using toon boom so maybe it's just too different from what i use, maybe in a week of getting to know it better, dreams will be my best friend and i'll feel stupid for this post, but also i animated stuff in the supposed "professional way", even complete, rendered stuff (specializing in storyboard and rough animation) so here's my first impressions after using it for less that 24 hours with no visual tutorials only the written ones. if i say something wrong or missed something or if any of the things i say below has an easy solution PLEASE LET ME KNOW i'm. plenty happy to be proven wrong :)

ok now, time to be a bitch

Startin with the biggest offence imo:

WORKING WITH FREE FRAME TIMING IS HELL

in animation you got your frames right? 24 each second yall know the gig. once upon a time, in disney golden era you used to do one drawing for each frame but nowdays you hardly do that. most people just put a drawing when needed which means one drawing could last 2 frames, one 4, one 8 up til as many you could need. more often than not you'll change the duration of each frame many times as you are doing your animation, making them longer or shorter and adjusting each frame before or after based on that. most programs will let you make a drawing shorter or longer and automatically adjust the frames around it, meaning it'll move them as needed.

procreate dreams doesn't do that. if you shorten a drawing it'll leave a space between the one you shortened and the one after. if you elongate a drawing..... you can't do that. yes. you. can't. do. that. to be more precise, you can't do that if there's a drawing right after because it'll just won't let you move past it..... "but that's fine" i hear you say "just move the damn frame blocking it", great idea! you can't do that either. you can only move one frame at a time. even if you select more of them you can only move one at a time (WHY). to move more of them you need to group them and ungroup them all the times. hope you understand how tedious that is.

tied to this point: THE TIMELINE OCCUPIES HALF THE SCREEN you'll see why in a minute

you can zoom in and out of the timeline as you please but it occupies half the screen regardless. you can't possibly shorten it to occupy less space even if you have only one track. "you can go into *whatever i don't remember the name* mode-" NO YOU CAN'T. whatever mode let's you draw full screen, with a supposed "timeline" limited in a corner. this timeline only offers you 3 frames to flip from: the one you're working on, the one before and the one after. if you paid attention you noticed i said frames and not drawings. this means that if your drawing occupies more that one frame you'll have to flip through all of them. no, you can't enlarge them. can you imagine what could be like storyboarding like this? where a panel of a rough board usually last around 2 seconds? can you imagine flipping through 48 frames til you reach the next panel?

so the choices of interface are: timeline where you can see more frames at a time but it occupies half the screen or full drawing but only one frame at a time... ok

YOU CAN'T MOVE LAYERS UP AND DOWN

with layers i don't mean tracks, i mean layers, the ones procreate has. this program treats each frame as a drawing with layers but you can't move the layers up and down from each other. the first layer you make is always going to end up on the bottom because it creates the next layer on top so good luck if you want to color your lineart. (you could i guess prepare each drawing beforehand with multiple frames but i think i'd go insane)

"just make the color/shadow/whatever on another track" if you have frames for each drawing it's an ok solution, but again, if you work in anything other that one drawing each frame it'll be hell matching the timing.

so, in conclusion and also TL;DR: you either are a master animator that does one frame per second, animates without sketching (you also can't lower opacity on tracks, only layers in drawings), keyframes (adding in-betweens seems equally tedious as moving a frame for the points said before), and never makes mistakes or you'll find it extremely difficult i think to do frame by frame animation.

it could maybe be a good program for motion grafic and video editing. make those animation after effect style? not my field so can't really make a statement on that.

i know it just came out and they'll probably fix some stuff in the future, but for now? looks extremely tedious and user unfriendly. i'm extremely grateful for the procreate team to try and make animation more cheaper/accessible and i'm aware it can't have all the features toon boom has for obvious reasons. they surely had their limitations but for something that (if i recal correctly) was supposed to revolution the animation industry and was supposed to be a program where you could do ANYTHING from pre, to post production i was extremely disappointed... will probably continue to try and make it work while i wait for updates!

hey so i saw you are a taika waititi blog and i wanted to ask if you've seen this post: By heaven, thy madness shall be paid by weight! on Tumblr? (tw for abuse mention) for context this post is about the questionable at best things taika has done and in case you do not support his actions, i would like you to know. i, of course, could be mistaken, and this could be fake, in which case please do clear it up, since i neither have twitter nor am a huge fan of his! sorry if this ask sounds negative, i mean only the best as i was also unpleasantly surprised by this :(

look, taika is a hollywood celebrity. working with bad people is something i don't support but am not surprised that he does it. and yeah, i saw that he liked johnny depp's instagram post about the hearings which was disappointing. i also think that hollywood and fame and being a “gay icon” have gotten to his head in bad ways. i think he's a sellout and disney has really stifled his ability to write good things (although i do think ragnarok was actually a pretty good movie... which only led to disappointment when love and thunder was not lol). and yeah, that tweet he made about the blm protests in june 2020 was quite shitty and he hasn't apologized for it. and ik people have also talked about reservation dogs being antiblack—i haven't seen it and of course taika wasn't the only person working on it, but i don't doubt that it's true. he also has a habit of not including many women in his work (which is interesting bc like so much of this stuff is at least partially about masculinity). anyway, yes, there are a bunch of questionable or shitty things that taika has done. and a lot of his older work especially is still very good. jojo rabbit is one of the best films i've ever seen. it's not very difficult, for me at least, to enjoy someone's work without idolizing them as a person. i don't think it's come to the point that it has with, say, jkr, that i am against supporting his work because of the bad things he's done. i also urge people to always consider the fact that certain people are held up to more scrutiny than others. i doubt taika would receive as much hate if he weren't a jew of color. like obviously that's not all that's going on here, but i do think it's part of it.

so like tl;dr taika is kinda shitty and also has made some wonderful work and i don't think it's bad to appreciate it.

Your post about that network is wrong. While I understand the homophobia behind but that’s like saying because Disney still has Chris Pratt playing Star Lord or Leticia Wright(she’s anti vax)we should go and harass every single actor and actress, writer, producer, director and other crew members for also working for Disney. And some of those actors and actresses listed are probably members of the LGBTQIA+ community or big allies. Maybe think before sending a legion of if hateful people to harass people. Also people may be under contract and can’t say anything and can very well be fired.

however, the Colorado Springs shooting happened over the weekend and I couldn't stop thinking about this ask.

True allies, and members of the community would not and should not be conducting business with companies who exclude and other them and people they claim to be allies of.

Exclusion and othering leads to dehumanization. Especially paired with this current political climate of dangerous dehumanizing anti gay rhetoric coming from the republican party.

Hiding hate behind religion is a cowards choice. The bible says "love thy neighbor" not love thy neighbor*

Every single person working with that network and Candace Cameron Bure *deserve* every ounce of criticism they receive. If they can't handle criticism, they might be in the wrong field.

Developing Incantations and Word-Based Charms

In contemporary witchcraft, cute little rhyming couplets are both common and fun to work with. It makes me feel like a Disney witch to chant little rhymes.

But it's also not necessary, or always even practical. I'm not a freestyler, I can't come up with based rhymes on the spot. So anyway, if you're looking for discourse on how to come up with your own word-based incantations and charms, here you go:

You can keep it simple and speak plainly in your everyday language. What's the difference between,

Creature of fire, this charge I lay: no phantom in thy presence stay! Hear my will addressed to thee; as my word, so mote it be!

and,

Candle flame, I give you this job: Chase away all illusions, uninvited spirits, and energies that conflict with my intent in this spell. As I command you, you have listened, and my will has been done.

The main difference, imo, is aesthetic. If you vibe with the nebulous implications of what a "phantom" is, and you like thys, thees, and motes, go with the former.

If you just want to sit there and figure out what you want, and then tell the candle to do that, go with the latter. It's going to pretty much do the exact same thing.

Now, that being said, the specific language used can really matter, especially when working in traditional currents. Going in to that in-depth is for another post, and it doesn't particularly apply to us for most circumstances.

Really think about exactly you want to have happen. I really believe there's a difference between "candle flame, chase away all unwanted spirits," and "candle flame, chase away all uninvited spirits." Consider the implications of your words.

The intent you feel in your heart does not automatically override the crystalized meaning of your words and actions.

Your words have incredible power. Once you invoke your intent with a specific word or phrase, that's what it is.

You can reuse and repurpose the good stuff. Way back when I was starting, I read Mastering Witchcraft by Paul Huson, where he presents two cleansing charms: one for saltwater, and one for incense. The saltwater one was a rhyming couplet that was easy to remember. "Water and earth, where you are cast, let no spell nor ill intention last not in complete accord with me. As my word, so mote it be."

The incense one was way longer and in a totally different, non-rhyming format. I wasn't fixing to memorize two things, so I modified the saltwater one: "Fire and air, where you flare, let no spell nor ill intention last..."

Easy.

There is no practical reason that all of your spells or charms must be totally independent and unique. In fact, if you use repeating lines shared between many charms, various theories of magic would say that this actually stores and shares more power between all of them.

Having a standard format can really help. Creating a format for all of your charms is a great way to explore your personal path, because you gotta sit there and ask what stuff is important for you and what you think magic requires in order to work. It can also really aid in building charms because you've already decided the kind of stuff you want to include, so you're not just starting with a blank slate. Here's an example:

Name the influencing powers/energies State what you want them to do Describe how your will becomes manifest Affirm that your will shall be done Close/seal charm

This might look like:

Sun and Moon, crown my room, and cradle me to sleep Not the outside world, nor stress, nor nightmares Will touch me while I'm in your keep My will is spoken, my word complete By my power: so mote it be

Standard formats can make memorization easier because you know what part comes next. If you've just finished naming the powers, next comes telling them what you want them to do.

Take pressure off of the development process by taking your charms out for test drives. I know you, friend. You're anxious about writing the perfect charm as an ideal vehicle for your magical power, and you might spend weeks tinkering with a single charm without ever getting out there and using it.

But here's the thing. How are you going to know if it's perfect if you've never used it? Like how do you know the changes you make are improvements if you don't already have a baseline effectiveness?

You can (and maybe should!) use rough draft, partially completed charms - even individual lines from charms - and try them out in your daily life. Practice putting your power into them, see how they flow, see how they blend with situations. A charm that looks perfect on paper may be clunky when you vibrate it through your mind. A charm that seems to flow well the first five times you use it might have strange, unwanted energies below the surface.

Remember, your charms aren't museum-quality historical artifacts; they are a living part of your craft that can evolve with you. I know, my beauties. We are all enchanted by the thought of a leather-bound tome to pass down to our students decades from now, hand-written in magical inks, our spells and charms immortalized for future generations. Maybe they'll name a school of witchcraft after us one day.

But if we maintain this ideal in our minds that the spells and charms we write have to be perfect, they're never going to get finished. Let me encourage you to accept fluidity when writing your charms, and modify them as-needed; even every time you use them. As good as you are at magic, I hope you will not be offended that I am betting against any of us writing a perfect charm used our whole lives, without ever reformatting or upgrading it.

So don't pressure yourself to make something pristine and perfect! Let your charms be your faithful hound dogs, your tools slung in your pack. Let them grow and learn with you, and become perfectly honed to the environments within which you work.

So for a few years now, I had this idea where I would claim to have actually interviewed Dobson, and posted an audio link. When clicked on, it would instead be a parody song as if sung by Dobson himself. I just never had the time or equipment to properly sync my singing to the kareoke version of the song. But as Dobson has been gone for a long time now, and I doubt I’ll ever really get the chance, I figured I’d at least share the lyrics for everyone to enjoy. I hope this doesn’t come off as weird, but the idea of Joshua featuring in a later kh game and his characterization there made me think of the idea of Joshua being Joshua and doing nothing for the most part but the second he hears Sora and Riku are here he hauls ass to put on a big angelic and frankly gaudy show with full on shoujo sparkles cause he has decided to actually help these idiots for unknown reasons. Which leads to the entirety of shibuya looking on in complete surprise as some white haired kid walks in asks Joshua for help saving his bestie and Joshua is like “sure 💅” and like actually does it. To the shock, aghast, and even horror of everyone around him.

(A kinder part of me thinks it’s because he generally is projecting hard onto the kh story like in a way where he is personally invested in as a fan, like the weird cosmic being he is and like his interactions with them are HIS self insert fanfic and he will MAKE IT WHAT HE WANTS. I would find it funny if neo was happening and just stage left as to not be visible is Riku and Sora and their nonsense. It would be in the spirit of kingdom hearts but instead of Sora behind Elsa singing let it go it’s riku watching some poor sod get earsed while he is just trying to find his bestie. But the crack brain in me is like he has beef with MoM because they are the same species and he wants that guy to loose/win, idk we have no clue what his plan is or anything).

Though I don’t have the post; I did like someone’s idea on ddd Joshua being someone who is trying to speed run his own redemption arc without really having any clue what those words even mean or what they look like and he’s settled on “it means answering questions That’s almost like taking responsibility for thy’s own actions right lol.” (or maybe he’s hoping if he plays his cards right he’ll get a Disney villain song. WHO KNOWS!)

I think ddd Joshua is interesting to me because of his interplay with Riku and Sora, fundamentally friendly people, aren’t really phased by him at least in my view. Like they are so used to weird shit, I think Joshua weird shit doesn’t phase them. I just would enjoy seeing more of the dynamics. I don’t even think the characters in ddd need to be twewy’s versions of those characters, in the same way squall yuffie and cloud aren’t like their actual characters. He could be on a total different emotional journey than his in game counterpart. Like the idea that this version of Joshua has lost everything Expect the dream versions of his friends (not even like their hearts, their dreams!) and that fundamentally has left him at what it essentially rock bottom and changed how he interacted with Riku and Sora as a result. Just a lot of different ways you could spin it yknow?

(Riku and Joshua are mlm violence it’s so funny. I think it’s because on some level, there is a bit of a commonality in their personalities in the worst way but dealt with differently. Riku acknowledged his bad habits and actively made it his mission to better himself while Joshua, idk if I’m totally wording this right, revels in his own toxicity and self destructive behaviors to his own detriment. And the idea of Riku tell him that to his face? Well, that be my woody telling young nort no one has ever loved him before moment. Like I want it so bad. Personally, I don’t think I’d ever want an actual fight with Joshua like in game. I just want to interrogate him mentally.)

I hope that this doesn’t come off as annoying. I know a lot of twewy fans don’t like connecting the two but I hope that this all comes off in good fun and I have no illusions the two games are actually connected beyond brief references and I’m just having a bit of a laugh since Ddd Joshua is such…a treat if you have context for his behavior in his actual game and I think it’s fun thought experiment to imagine Joshua in a future title. Frankly, I adore to see him lovingly crafted within the unreal engine. Maybe even as a actual lovecraftian angelic horror one of these days.

Hi anon! It is a bit long and I might've lost the thread here or there, but not annoying! But this did get saved in drafts and I lost track of what I wanted to say.  But here’s a little of my thoughts:

If it were concurrent with Neo, I think it'd be incredibly jarring and frustrating to have Joshua be more willing to help a couple of interdimensional travelers than the denizens of the UG and Neku and Co. Arguably, it could be used to give more insight on why Joshua does so little in Neo, but kh isn't really canon to twewy, and I'd be annoyed if they tried to make it a two way street. Love it as a one way street though, and in all honesty kh is probably our best bet at seeing anything twewy again. 

To me, initially, ddd Joshua is attempting to be a decent person, and earlier the reasons for ranged from a) he dialed up being a jerk to influence Neku b) ddd writers had a different interpretation of him c) post game character development d) it's a different parallel world and not the same Josh e) losing Shibuya. When Neo came out, it's clear that a and c were not as responsible for the differences in Joshua’s behavior as we might’ve thought (or hoped).  

Idk, I just kinda hope that if Joshua does pop up in future kh its in a foreign enough context

So I've seen a lot of your meta posts recently and I was wondering what your opinion is on some depictions of the order and the attachment rule? I've seen some where it's treated as the thing that destroyed the order but I've never understood that and I've seen some where it's simply interpreted differently, such as love being considered separate from attachment and attachment simply being a relationship where you'd be willing to throw away the world for one person.

(you of course don't have to answer this if you don't want to or if you already have and I'm just doing the big dumb)

I mean, I've talked about quite a few times (still haven't finished that big meta about each instance of the word 'attachment' in canon though, but it's like... 60% done? has been that way for six months? xD) But here is my understanding of the difference between attachment and love (with quotes from GL), here is more on my personal definition of attachment, and here's one more regarding Anidala.

I 100% believe love and attachment aren't the same thing, since that's what GL explicitly stated multiple times. I don't really know what more I can add to that (many of my wonderful, wonderful mutuals have done a better, more comprehensive job at covering that subject).

I don't believe "Thou Shall Not Have Attachments" is even a rule - as in, something like a law. (More on that when that meta finally drops lmao.) Whether someone is loving selflessly (which is encouraged) or possessively (attachment, which is forbidden) can be hard to determine from an outside perspective - which is why the Order encourages mindfulness of one's own feelings. The Jedi are not constantly examining each other's relationships waiting to say "you can't be friends with that person anymore, you're unwilling to let them go!" - they're meant to examine themselves. (Example). I mean, "Thou Shall Not Allow Your Emotions To Cloud Thy Judgment" is not a rule either, in the sense that it's not a clear line that you can cross and get punished for. Struggling with attachment will happen, the way slipping up and letting your fear, anger or rage guide you will happen. You can't forbid an instinct, no matter how wrong that instinct is - and the Jedi don't, because they never say "you're not allowed to be angry," for example - they say "be mindful of your anger." So the Jedi warn against attachment, and other dark instincts. What the Jedi actually forbid is choosing to continue to act upon that instinct. 'So you had a hard time letting go of your Master and might have been too possessive? Meditate and work on yourself, we're not going to kick you out over it,' basically.

What is a rule is 'no marriages,' which is in the same line as 'you can't be a Jedi and have a side job' tbh. It has little to do with attachment itself, it has to do with commitment. You can't have your spouse as your highest priority, the way your spouse deserves, and have the Order has your highest priority, the way you've pledged to.

So I dislike portrayals (in fanfic or in the EU, or in Disney) that conflate love and attachment, and I very much think the Jedi were right to have the stance they had on attachment. I don't even understand how anyone would even think that it's what caused their destruction. Palpatine didn't plan their extermination over the course of decades because he disagreed with their philosophy on love. The Jedi weren't drafted in the war because of that philosophy. The chips didn't work based on whether or not the Jedi were wrong. Order 66 didn't even happen because the Order forbade Anakin to be with Padmé - because even if Anakin had openly been with her, the root problem (that he wanted to save her from death at any cost) would have still been there.

What an article I've found 😶 The author of the article analyses the mythological elements of F2 and finds out that Achtohallan is god, and Elsa is "a messiah" of said god.

And it really looks like the creators of F2 meant something alike this; and it is why there was talking about mythical tragic figure; higher calling and destiny; coming home to the glacier; why the spirits were unreasonable and incapable to make such a 34 years long-plan.

And also with this article we can see Elsa almost like a daughter of goddess, a devoted chosen one. It seems that it is why Northuldra are sidelined and there is almost no Elsa content post F2. Cause now the writers must try very hard to show a messianic figure and her service in a Disney cartoon properly. I can not see F1 Elsa like Jesus, not at all. I could not expect such retcon.

But F2 Elsa...there is something similar with her behaviour and the message about atonement, sacrifice; and loving thy enemy. Also I remember when Jesus started his mission, his brothers came to him asking to return home. But Jesus answered "don't stop me". Doesn't it remind a little Elsa&Anna's dynamic in the movie, does it?

This frame is discussed in the article; and on the last row we can see two human figures: one with a hexahedron background and other similar without the background; sure, it depicts Achtohallan and the Fifth Spirit, her minister.

And if we are continuing to dive deep down, is Anna "an apostle" of Elsa now?...👽

I always felt that they made Elsa someone more than a forest ranger, but the articles helped me to view the strangeness of her arc from another standpoint. This was high-flying and grand, moral and wholesome yes, but so unexpectedly.

My Top 10 Ships of 2020

It's been a weird year but I've seen other people doing this. Plus this year I've been way more into gen fics (love a bit of found family especially in clone wars and marvel) than anything shippy. So I genuinely don't know what imma put on here aside from two ships for sure. Sorry this post is super long idk how to do the below the cut thing and I've had this app for 5 years...

10) Viktor Nikiforov and Yuuri Katsuki - Yuri!!! On Ice

It was a real toss up between this, supercorp, kanera and wolfstar cos they're all very integral ships to my fan heart but this son because of the Yuri on Ice fandom's rebirth this year. I've never stopped shipping this, never stopped reading fanfic of them for any extended period of time, they're still my most bookmarked ship on ao3 (although I think now star wars - all media types may have overtaken them for fandom). They were one of the first things I watched where the queer ship I loved became canon and I can't wait for the film (and hopefully someday a season 2). Heck I even made my mum watch Yuri on Ice with me so I think that says it all.

9) Edelgard Von Hresvelg and female Byleth - Fire Emblem: Three Houses

My first fire emblem game was fates when I was like 14 (and finally gay awake lol). I was so disappointed that I had to be with a guy character because the only female option was kinda creepy and also I wouldn't get the character of kana. So when three houses came out I was so happy because finally there were beautiful incredible female characters my female byleth could romance (I'm so sorry mlm you deserved so much more than you got). I got the game as soon as it came out (had to search a lot of shops let me tell you) and started on black eagles. I was actually kinda disappointed back in 2019. I didn't like the explore the monastery bit (still find it kinda tedious) and the battle mechanics weren't quite the same as fates (no pairing up?! Aka my main battle technique for protecting the weaker units). So I got like 20 hours in and put it down. Came back to it in lockdown and finally finished it! I'm so proud of myself I virtually never finish games. And I fully fell in love with the useless lesbian edelgard in the process. When I started back playing in 2020 I was like eh I wish I'd picked a different character to romance (like shes an emperor that's morally very shady) but then the romance stuff started with edelgard and I fell the heck in love.

8) Cory Matthews and Shawn Hunter (and Topanga Lawrence) - Boy Meets World

Disney+ was released in the UK this year and I finally got the opportunity to watch boy meets world in its best quality (aka not on YouTube). I watched it back when I was like 12 or 13 and it's such a nostalgic show for me. Watching it again I still absolutely adore it (and my bi ass was low-key crushing on Shawn especially in chick like me - I'm 18 btw and I got so scared for a sec but rider strong was 18 when chick like me came out so it's fine woah). And of course now I see the possibilities of the beautiful Cory and Shawn relationship like they were so bromance it was basically romance and throw in topanga it's the perfect ot3 (but I'm also fine with just Cory and Shawn or just Cory and Topanga). Read some good fanfic for them this year. My favourite was one about Shawn stealing makeup and stuff and exploring gender (need more fics like this I'm biiii).

7) Steve Rogers and Bucky Barnes - Marvel Cinematic Universe

I rewatched all the MCU films this year too. And got really into Peter parker whump and irondad. Plus my eternal obsession with identity and relationship reveals of course led me from Spiderman identity reveals (and found family cuteness) to stucky coming out. Especially when it involves the internet and social media. Not my favourite ship but it's been significant to my year due to the sheer amount of marvel stuff I've read.

6) Satine Kryze and Obi Wan Kenobi - Star Wars

I rewatched clone wars in prep for season 7 and wow Satine's death was sad and sudden. She first appeared in S2 E13 I think and just the sheer sexual tension of their bickering. "The sarcasm of a soldier. The delusion of a dreamer." Just ugnnhhh my bi ass can't take much more of this. And Anakin just sipping his wine in the background grinning. And I fully believe korkie is a Kenobi.

5) Commander Cody and Obi Wan Kenobi - Star Wars

I am very much an Obi wan multishipper. I don't really have a favourite but I fully believe he was with satine and Quinlan in his life. I don't think be would've actually done anything with Cody because of the whole superior officer thing. And this probably isn't even my favourite Obi wan ship - that honour probably goes to quinobi or obitine. However the most popular ships in the fandom are codywan, quiobi and obikin. No offence to anyone who ships these they're just personally not to my taste, but I can't stand quiobi, and obikin I find only slightly more tolerable and I think that's just because there's so much obikin content so if I like the concept of a fic that happens to be obikin I'll read it. I'm just not a fan of the mentor/student relationships. So I generally favoured the codywan fics when there was shipping involved meaning I read a lot of them this year. Needed that nice fix it content post season 7.

4) Zuko and Katara - Avatar: the Last Airbender

Again I am a multishipper I have nothing against zukka it's cute. But I'm a zutara shipper first and foremost because when I first watched avatar I was like 13 and denying my gayness and gayness in general so I shipped the straight things and the straight things only. Most of these ships I stopped shipping - dramione, spuffy, some my little pony ones which we don't talk about. Zutara stayed. (I have nothing against any of the things I used to ship I just stopped shipping them so much/shipped new things more). I've continuously shipped zutara since I first watched avatar even if I didn't necessarily spend that much time on it it has always been here as one of my favourite ships. It has such good fanfic I swear including my favourite ever fanfic from any fandom - love thy enemy. Plus like the black games (reread this for the millionth time this year), a delicate subterfuge (which I read for the first time this year and damn it's so good) and so many more. With the avatar resurgence this year I haven't actually rewatched avatar aside from my normal random episode every now and then when I feel like it. But there's been a lot of avatar on my dash from people I follow getting into it and people I followed for avatar returning so naturally I returned to the fandom and read quite a lot of fanfic. I also read just a lot of avatar gen fics which were great at the whole found family thing I've been so obsessed with this year.

3) Catra and Adora - She Ra and the Princesses of Power

Catradora is canon! They kissed! What more is there to say. Arguably they should've been top but I never shipped them that much since I was always very much a multishipper when it came to she ra so yes I was very happy it became canon because we actually won for once but also I've never read much fanfic for them etc. But they are very much a dynamic I love and watching she ra all again in prep for season 5 I really enjoyed the build up of their relationship. The other two only go above because Buffy is my favourite show ever and damn there's some good fuffy fanfic and Aphra and Tolvan is both fresh in my mind and star wars owns me. Would love some catradora fic recs btw if anyone has them tho.

2) Buffy Summers and Faith Lehane - Buffy the Vampire Slayer

I didn't realise it was last year that I got super into them but according to my ao3 bookmarks it was lol. 2020 I swear it's lasted an eternity. I got into them about a month before lockdown (which feels like another lifetime). I've loved Buffy since I first watched it when I was 13. It's arguably still my favourite TV show. I've been through a lot of ships for Buffy - bangel to spuffy and now fuffy. I still think angel and her were a beautiful ship back in season 2 and especially in the angel episode I will remember you. But faith and Buffy had so much chemistry in season 3 - she would've been a fresh start for Buffy and the amount of fix it fics I read I swear. My favourite has to be one where they met in LA during Anne and how that changed everything feat Buffy's internal homophobia.

1) Cheili Lona Aphra and Magna Tolvan - Star Wars

I read Darth Vader (2015) and Doctor Aphra (2016) for the first time at the end of 2020 (got a comic subscription which has served me very well already I've nearly finished the star wars canon comics). Just to see canon queer ladies in star wars was so magical for me as a queer lady. I didn't think star wars would be so overt yet as to have a queer kiss in canon (even if it's in the comics) and especially not with the main character of arguably their main comic series. Now we just gotta hope that we'll get it in live action someday soon. Honourable mentions: Vivian and Elle - Legally Blonde, Candace and Vanessa - Phineas and Ferb, Stevie and Alex - Wizards of Waverly Place, Xander and Spike - Buffy the Vampire Slayer (I actually don't ship this but damn some authors are good - this was the ship that made me realise I don't need to like a ship if the author is good enough to write it well), Eli Vanto and Mitth'raw'nuruodo - Star Wars (started reading the books last year but finished this year and only started with fanfic this year), Villanelle and Eve - Killing Eve, Kanan and Hera - Star Wars, Barriss and Ahsoka - Star Wars, Remus and Sirius - Harry Potter, Kara and Lena - Supergirl (let's hope this becomes canon next year!) (Those last four are ones I've shipped forever some of my og ships but nothing particularly big has happened for me this year with them so)
