RNM March Meta: Strength of Character
My favorite minor character is Jenna because she is not only strong and outspoken, but she is also caring and does things out of the kindness of her heart. She goes out of her way to protect people, like when she fired her gun off-duty to save Max, and is always ready to help someone when they need it. She also just has a great personality, and I love how she’s so tough and doesn’t let what other people say get to her. She adds a lot of depth to the show, and it wouldn’t be the same without her. My favorite main character is Michael because he brings a lot to the table; he makes the show a little more lighthearted with his humor, he does what he wants and does not care about anyone’s opinion, and he has a tough exterior but is actually so sweet and will do anything to protect those he loves. I love that he took the blame for killing Rosa to protect Isobel--he had to live with that guilt for so long but dealt with it anyway because he loved her so much. I think that the best antagonist is Noah because I definitely was not expecting him to be an antagonist to begin with. At first, he seemed like the ideal husband: patient, sweet, caring, and attentive. Therefore, when I found out that he was the fourth alien and the awful things that he did, especially to Isobel, I was completely shocked. My favorite protagonist is Max. He has a very pure heart and does what he thinks is right. He’s protective of his siblings and will do anything to keep them out of harm’s way, along with the people he loves. Although it can be annoying sometimes that he always wants to be the hero, he will put others’ needs before his own and will stop at nothing to make sure that they’re happy, even at the risk of his own life. A character that I would like to see more of is Liz’s dad, Arturo. I think that he’s very sweet and wholesome, and learning that he thought he failed Rosa and that he doesn’t deserve forgiveness absolutely broke my heart because it wasn’t his fault that she died. And the fact that he was never able to move on, even after ten years of her being gone, made me so sad! I’m glad he was able to forgive himself, though, and I want to see how he will interact with Rosa now and if he will treat her differently. In my opinion, the character that has had the most and the best development is Kyle. When I saw what he was like in high school, I was appalled; he was this mean jock who bullied and terrorized other people, and I absolutely despised him for how he treated Alex and the way he judged and attacked his sexuality. However, watching seasons 1 and 2, he has changed so much since then. Even though they might not be the best of friends, seeing him work alongside Alex and them getting along made me really happy that he’s no longer the arrogant jerk he was in high school. Additionally, he still cares about Liz so much and risks everything to help her, even though she’s in love with someone else, showing a sweet side to him that we never really saw or knew about.

Roswell New Mexico Episode 1.2
I really liked how the storyline has progressed so far. However, I am a little disappointed that Liz exposed Max. I can understand why she did, but at the same time he risked his secret and saved her life. But then again, he lied about the last time he saw Rosa, so I really don’t know whose side I’m on. Anyway, I liked how they introduced Jenna. Really glad she put those guys in their place when she shot their tire.

This fanfic mainly creates a narrative where Alex goes to pursue his music dream through a TV show competition. There, he learns how to embrace and be more comfortable with himself and his sexuality. Additionally, it touches on what would have happened to Liz if Max had actually died after bringing Rosa back; it discusses her new dark path and the ways that she has changed. I liked it because I thought it was really interesting how it focused on a different side of Alex that we didn’t see too much of until the finale of season 2. It was also interesting to see Liz portrayed outside of her perfect scientist persona.

This fanfic creates a narrative where instead of being adopted by the Evans, Max was taken in by the Valentis. In this version, he doesn’t have a strong relationship with Michael or Isobel and is forced to learn how to control his powers on his own. Additionally, it tells the story of Max’s adoption from the perspective of each Valenti and discusses what his life is like without his siblings. I really liked this because I thought a lot about how different Michael would have been like if he never had taken the crayon away from Max. Although this fanfic is not from Michael’s perspective, it’s still interesting to see how a different environment changed Max’s personality.

This fanfic creates a narrative where it describes Alex’s inner thoughts and his internal battle with his sexuality. It focuses on different reasons why he’s worried about being seen with Michael at a party, which makes him contemplate on going in. I liked this one a lot because it allows us to see a different side of why Alex was hesitant to be completely out of the closet besides the lingering voice in his head and fear from his father. I thought it gave a more realistic approach to a lot of what the LGBTQ+ community feels and goes through when they completely come out of the closet.

I still can’t believe Max tried to pull the plug and kill himself, but I’m glad that they were able to save him! I’m nervous to see what happens with dark Max and how he’s going to cope with the new energy in him. I’m scared that Isobel won’t be strong enough to deal with him, but we’ll see what happens. I’m also just surprised that Rosa was able to resurrect him and want to know how she was able to do that/if she has other new abilities since she was brought back. Lastly, I’m glad to see Maria and Alex talk about their situation with Michael and that there are no hard feelings. I honestly like all three of them so much and don’t really care who ends up with whom as long as everyone’s happy.

The Limits of Infinite Scrolls
“From this perspective, gifsets are like little minivids minus the musical track, played out across space rather than (or as well as) time.”
I liked how this sentence was very concise and straightforward. The previous sentence described in depth what gifsets are and why they are significant/their purpose, whereas the quote above sort of summarizes and highlights the main takeaway. This makes it a lot easier for people who aren’t as familiar with gifsets to understand what they are. Additionally, it was really descriptive so that one can imagine what a gifset is, even if they haven’t seen one.

Fan Video Analysis: Michael & Alex - Can I Be Him
Out of the three that I chose, this one was definitely my favorite. I loved how it showed the dynamic and different sides of Michael and Alex’s relationship, and I thought that the creator chose really good scenes from the show to go along with the song.
The video begins with a clip of Alex saying how Michael makes him feel 17 again, with the song starting to play in the background. It then progresses to clips of them from when they were in high school, as James Arthur sings “you took me back in time to when I was unbroken.” Although Alex was never completely “unbroken,” the scene complemented the lyrics well because it was a simpler time for him when he was genuinely happy before he was punished for his sexuality. After this clip, the video continues to show moments from their past to accompany the lyrics. In doing so, the creator chose clips to illustrate the lyrics such as Michael playing the guitar when the lyrics were “I swear that every word you sing, you wrote them for me.” Additionally, when Arthur sings “If you were mine, I’d never let anyone hurt you,” the scene was of Michael protecting Alex from Jesse, which ultimately led to his hand getting crushed. The creator’s scene choices from the show perfectly illustrated the lyrics of the song and also showed the different aspects of their relationship.
Another thing I noticed was that in between many of the verses and chorus of the song, the creator chose to use clips where you can hear Michael and Alex’s conversation. Although they are rather short, they still have a significant impact because it helps transition to the different time periods of their relationship. For example, the first clip took us to when they were high school. The next time there was a scene with audio, it took us to the present time when Michael walked away from Alex. This also helps show how their relationship has changed from when they were young to now; the following scenes were of their relationship 10 years later and shows the difference in their interactions. In the past, Michael would never walk away from Alex and would stand by his side; however, although he still loves Alex, he’s sort of tired of being placed second which makes him stop waiting around for Alex in the present. The last thing that I noticed was that the final clip was in black and white and sort of slowed down. I thought that it was an interesting and effective choice. From my perspective, I thought that this was the creator’s way of showing the strength and intensity of their relationship and how they’re meant to be together. Overall, I really enjoyed watching the video and thought that it was very well made. It did a great job of portraying the different sides of Michael and Alex’s relationship, and I felt that it highlighted important moments between them.

Although I was a bit biased due to the fact that I already love these songs, I chose these specific fan videos mainly because I knew that the songs complemented and accurately reflected each of these relationships. I really liked how during parts of the songs, the creator would choose certain clips from the show that went along with the lyrics. For example, in the “Can I Be Him” video, when James Arthur was singing about how no one could hurt the one he loves, the creator chose a clip that was of Michael protecting Alex from his dad and standing up for him (which led to him getting his hand crushed). Additionally, each of these videos sort of told a story with the scenes that were chosen and were different from the fan videos that I have seen in the past; instead of creating an alternate ending than the show, it basically summarized each relationship with different clips and projected the chemistry of the characters while also showing the progression of how they fell in love. For example, with Michael and Maria, the creator chose a variety of clips from the bar before they fell in love and reminded me of certain scenes that I forgot (like when they were in the desert). Overall, I really enjoyed watching these videos, and they made me kind of nostalgic and sad that the next season isn’t out yet.

I thought it was really cool to see everything I read visually represented, and I would not have been able to notice all the details and inferences on my own. Additionally, I thought the video was really interesting, and I liked how I sort of knew a little bit about the background and relationship between the men going into watching it. Lastly, I really liked the choice of music and thought that it complemented the scenario well.

The One Crazy After All
“The shift in both presentation and reception that this indicates (especially as these are two very traditionally masculine, violent military type guys who do, in fact, sleep with a lot of women) is one of the things I want to explore in the dissertation, so they seemed a perfect pairing to play with for the video.”
I liked how clear and direct this sentence was. It was very straightforward in describing the purpose of the dissertation and the reason behind pairing the characters together for the video. I also liked how although it is more of a formal paper, phrases including “I” were still used and implemented in an effective way. I was taught to try to avoid using these phrases in high school because it could weaken my position, but I realize it does not and can be really helpful and direct if correctly done.

Closer
I am not too familiar with the plot or any of the characters in Star Trek, but I thought that the video was really well done! I liked the creator’s choice of music; I thought that it complemented each scene and helped exemplify the sexual tension between Spock and Kirk. It just goes to show that the little details can really help create a new story!
