Another #booktok 📖book. I have recently come to the conclusion that Booktok is not to be entirely trusted - the books are quite inspiring and most are innovative/ have a good premise to build on, but the endings are often disappointing and turn out a bit shallow.

The premise of a Bed-share is quite creative - Leon and Tiffy are home at different times due to their job shifts, and sharing the same space but at different times seems very very cost-efficient. i wouldn’t mind doing it myself!

Tiffy’s a very large to life, vibrant, spontaneous person, haunted by her emotionally abusive ex; and Leon is a soft-spoken, caring palliative care nurse. They agreed on not meeting each other to keep the flatshare simple - yet a surprise encounter sparks a love line between the flat mates.

One critique I have is the speed of their relationship - after their encounter (spoiler excluded!) they could not stop thinking about each other. they go on trips to the beach together, photo shoots together - it all feels too good to be true. Events and misunderstandings happen soon after that affects their relationship, but seem to be resolved pretty quickly and easily.

Also, the book slightly touches upon LGBTQ+ issues and death - Leon’s patients depend so much on him and vice versa, Leon tries his best to give them the sweetest final chapters :( Some interactions between Leon and his patients were honestly so adorable and says a lot about Leon’s character.

However, I really enjoyed the bits where Tiffy’s friends helped her through the misunderstandings and abusive ex. They were genuine mates to go so far to protect her, even helping out Leon’s family as a favour. Also, Tiffy calls her friends to update them to whatever happens in her life - which is admirable and frankly something i should do more :p

Perhaps Home really is Where the Heart is :

Confesso que pensei no título desse post antes de saber que a autora trabalhava a princípio com publicações para o público infantil, isso já esclareceu muitas coisas.

Beth O’Leary vive próxima ao campo, mas buscando não se afastar muito de Londres. Ela escreveu o livro em questão durante suas viagens de trem na ida para o trabalho, mas agora se dedica de forma integral à escrita. A autora já teve seus títulos traduzidos para mais de trinta idiomas e além de Teto para Dois outros best-sellers constam eu seu currículo, são eles Mesa para Um, A Troca e Na Estrada com o Ex. O sucesso de Teto para Dois levou o livro a ser adaptado para uma série de televisão produzida pela Paramount+.

Aqui conhecemos Tiffy, uma mulher que vem sofrendo com o fim do seu relacionamento e que acabou de sair do apartamento de seu ex-namorado, agora ela precisa de um lugar novo (e barato) para morar. Também conhecemos Leon, um rapaz que vem tendo dificuldade para lidar com suas questões financeiras e buscando resolver esse problema ele decide alugar seu apartamento durante os períodos em que não está lá, já que Leon é enfermeiro e trabalha a noite, além de passar seus finais de semana na casa de sua namorada. Contrariando os amigos e o bom senso, os dois entram nesse acordo bastante incomum.

Mesmo sem nunca terem se encontrado pessoalmente, os dois assinam um contrato de locação de seis meses e passam a se comunicar através de post-its que deixam pela casa. A vida continua e a rotina dos dois passa a se encaixar, mas nenhum deles está livre de preocupações que incluem ex-namorados malucos, namoradas ciumentas e empregos maçantes…

Não consigo descrever mais do que isso sem acabar soltando pontos importantes da trama, mas algo que preciso ressaltar é: esse livro não parece ser sobre o que realmente é. Lendo a sinopse, não imaginei que se tratava de uma história que abordaria temas sensíveis como xenofobia, relacionamentos abusivos e outras críticas sociais, o que foi uma grata surpresa, já que todos esses temas são abordados e tratados com a seriedade que possuem além de não serem temas romantizados em nenhum momento, respeito muito a autora por isso, mas como disse lá em cima, a história de forma geral parece uma fanfic meio mal escrita.

É difícil manter a leitura, já que o começo não se mostra muito cativante e em pleno 2023 ainda precisamos nos deparar com a já tão datada protagonista que é ‘muito diferente das outras garotas’, ela é muito maluquinha, faz as próprias roupas, é muito artista… não há um capítulo que não ressalte o quanto Tiffy é diferente, o quanto ela se destaca e como suas roupas são exóticas e extravagantes. Acredito que em algum momento isso deve de fato ter sido um enredo interessante, tipo em 2012, mas hoje em dia já não é algo que se destaca de forma positiva ao longo das minhas leituras. 

Vale ressaltar que o desenvolvimento não é o ponto forte do livro, em poucas páginas Leon e Tiffy passam a conversar como se já fossem amigos há anos sendo que nunca nem se conheceram pessoalmente, o enredo caminha de forma perfeita para que tudo dê certo, os personagens não encontram grandes desafios ou obstáculos e os poucos que se apresentam são logo solucionados. Acredito que a autora traz aqui a essência de seu antigo trabalho, já que o público infantil sim precisa de um enredo de fácil compreensão, sem complexidade e simplista. Para adultos com um senso crítico mais desenvolvido não sei se é uma estrutura que funciona tão bem.

Apesar de gostar de comédias românticas, ler outra obra da autora, qualquer que seja, está fora de questão no momento. Minha decisão mais acertada foi ter lido esse livro em um único dia, pois após finalizá-lo tive a certeza de que, se parasse nem que fosse por um breve momento, não retornaria à leitura e teríamos mais um livro abandonado na estante. Não digo que o livro é ruim, mas não está longe disso, temos uma ideia intrigante, personagens secundário cativantes (mais até do que os principais) e uma história para ser contada, pena que Beth O’Leary não soube muito bem o que fazer com isso. A princípio dediquei três estrelas a esse livro, mas escrevendo essa resenha percebi que duas estrelas condizem mais com a realidade.
