No guys listen seriously LISTEN I need to talk about how Dovewing is the best written character in Warriors with the only truly satisfying character arc. I'd like to clarify, Dovewing is NOT my favorite character in warriors. She doesn't make my top 5 favorites, probably not even my top 10. But I consider personal favorites to be a separate thing entirely from best written characters. And of all the cats in the series, Dovewing is the only character who I feel that they did completely RIGHT. Tbqh it was probably an accident but whatever the reason, her character itself is just fabulous. The only thing I'd change is the nature if her powers because they don't really make sense and aren't clearly defined. But her character itself? *chef's kiss*. Dovewing is alienated from the moment she arrives in the series, through no fault of her own, and her relationship with the Prophecy is fundamentally different from the original Three. For starters, Jayfeather, Lionblaze and Hollyleaf are given the chance to begin to develop a sense of self outside of the Prophecy because they don't learn about it immediately. Even Jayfeather, the first to learn of it at the end of book 1, has gone through a whole book's worth of struggle with his identity as a disabled cat in an extremely ableist society. Though Jayfeather is handled extremely poorly, we watch over the course of the first book as he begins to find his niche in Clan life. Dovewing doesn't get that. Almost immediately after she is apprenticed, these two older cats reveal to her that she has this great destiny that she has to be a part of, and inform her that they are going to personally mold her to fit the role of the third cat. Jayfeather and Lionblaze have had at least a year to come to terms with the Prophecy, so when they foist it upon Dovewing, they don't stop to give her any time to mentally cope with it or come to terms with it-- they're already there. So Dovewing's whole identity becomes, by necessity, reliant on being a Prophecy cat. It's a double edged sword for her. On the one hand, she hates it because it clearly alienates her from the rest of the Clan, but on the other hand, the prophecy is the foundation of her identity. And yet, she can never truly be part of Jay and Lion's in-group, that's a hole that can only be filled by Holly, and there is no one else in her life she can talk to about it. The OG3 never had to hide the Prophecy from their siblings, because they all believed they were part of it. Since Ivypool is not part of this Prophecy and Dovewing is forced to keep it a secret, an understandable rift grows between them.
Anyways I'm getting off topic. The point I wanted to make there is that Dovewing is never given the chance to develop an identity or even a real relationship that doesn't hinge on being part of the Prophecy. So when she loses her powers, when the prophecy is over, she falls apart. She desperately wants, needs to get her powers back because for her whole life that's been the crux of her identity. She may have hated it but she literally doesn't know how to function without it. Even once she gives up on regaining her powers, she can never truly live a "normal" life in ThunderClan. Because ThunderClan will never see her as a separate entity from her role in the Prophecy. They knew her with her powers, and for the rest of her life the Clan will silently be comparing the way she was then with the way she is currently. They will never look at her and see Dovewing, they will only ever look at her and see "one of The Three". A part of a matched set from a time now passed.
Enter Tigerheart's second relationship with Dovewing. Tigerheart is a cat who got to develop a friendship with Dovewing that doesn't depend on her special powers. It's no wonder Dovewing falls for him. Like him or not, Tigerheart is the first cat to really look at Dovewing and see HER, not a single part of a more important whole. Bumblestripe might not know about the Prophecy at first, but his opinion of Dovewing is inextricably tied to her powers whether he knows it or not. Eg, Dovewing is the best hunter in ThunderClan, that's because of her powers. All of her ThunderClan clanmates unknowingly develop their opinions of her skills and her personality in relation to her special powers and the Prophecy.
Finally, Dovewing's arc reaches the best possible conclusion: leaving ThunderClan behind. Dovewing the former Prophecy cat has no future in ThunderClan. Any relationships she builds will be tainted by the Prophecy and her role in it. But leaving ThunderClan? Dovewing gets a chance to start over. The other Clans know of her former powers of course, but have little to no firsthand experience with Dovewing the prophecy cat. In leaving ThunderClan, Dovewing earns the chance to develop an identity and form relationships independent of the Prophecy. Her joining ShadowClan is SO narratively satisfying because it's her way to finally break away from this thing that's defined her whole life and develop genuine relationships untainted by the Prophecy.

i rly do feel a lot of sympathy for dovewing like yes yes she has the classic "should have gotten better writing" most wc characters do so now that that disclaimer is out of the way i just feel like, this sympathy for her that only a few other cats Invoke in me......theres smthn abt her i just love so much. having this huge huge destiny put on her at a young age and knowing that lionblaze n jayfeather would rather have hollyleaf w them then her, trying to find her place in life while also not Understanding why her sister is so angry w her....
like 2 me dovewings whole character thru omen of the stars-vision of shadows is her trying to become what everyone else wants her to be. she has to be a prophecy cat, a warrior of thunderclan, ivypool's sister, bumblestripe or tigerhearts mate, one of the three, but never just Dovewing. she has this complete lack of sense of self in oots and i just felt for her so much, she tries to find herself in bramblestars storm cus she realizes that shes just sort of There in her relationship with bumblestripe and has no investment in it at all, gets backlash for making her choice, and then in vision of shadows she FINALLY gets herself. she goes to shadowclan bc she has a family now and at this point in her life, she finally realizes who she is happy w and where she'll be happy.......aaaaaand i just feel SO BAD FOR HER cus once again her family draws away from her for finding that. like she wants to be with her fmaily in shadowclan and she finally feels like shes found out who Dovewing is but she loses her family and birth clan in the process, and i just....man. this poor gal

A pairing idea for ivypool,,,,
I like the idea of Talonheart x Ivypool for some reason. He starts simping for Dovewing but then the more him and Ivypool banter they become closer and Dovewing 100% ships it wkwkwkskeksdk
....gosh dang it I hate how I like this idea, because Ivypool x Fernsong is one of my all time favorite ships.
While I do think this is a cool idea, I don't think it would last, especially if Talonheart (Tigerheart for those who haven't been following my ridiculous AU notes) still becomes deputy/leader of ShadowClan, which I do think I'm gonna keep. Ivypool also becomes deputy/leader in this AU, and while the rules gradually loosen, I think they'd see that it wasn't going to work out and end up breaking up and Talon realizing he works better with Dove and Ivy realizing she works better with Fern.
I'm sorry, I LOVE the girlboss x malewife type couple that Ivy and Fern are. His willingness to be in the nursery in her place also makes a lot more sense because she would be leader at that point, so their dynamic works even more.

Apparently on a warrior cats roll, I wanted to see if I could put variation in character design by picking out a bunch of canon cats that p much had the "brown tabby amber eyes" description!!
I hope they're recognisable?
