seven lovely sins: comic sans powerpoint
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
thank you to @incandescent-creativity for the trend, this was honestly so fun even tho i ended up spending my whole day on it instead of actually writing skskks
i used this picrew to make all of the character pictures! except for the ones on the last page, which i made myself (i just wanted to keep things consistent in the actual character slides).
honestly i think this will be replacing any serious character info post lmao, so if you have questions about any of them, feel free to ask here! i would of course love to talk about them ^.^
(for the record! vice, taylor, izzy, cliff, push, ekaf, and alex are all made by various other players from my dnd group! unfortunately none of them have tumblrs, but still. i am the only one writing this novel but i am stealing their characters (with permission) so there's that!)

On Speaking Truth to Power
On Speaking Truth to Power
June 21, 2018 By Helen Schietinger
Haspel the Torturer
On May 9th seven human rights activists spoke out at Gina Haspel’s Senate confirmation hearing.  When I stood up, the first words out of my mouth were, “The question is, what did you do to human beings in U.S. custody?”  I was referring to the Muslim men tortured in the secret CIA prison Haspel was in charge of, but the question could also be asked of another administration head, Jeff Sessions, about the now over 11,000 unaccompanied children being jailed indefinitely in ICE detention centers, including over 3,000 who were cruelly separated from their parents at the border.  It is clear that neither the president nor Congress is willing to recognize our responsibility as a nation to respect the human rights of all human beings, including the right not to be imprisoned without just cause, much less the right not to be tortured.
In Senator Roy Blount’s banter with Haspel during the hearing, he noted that “truth to power” is a “time-honored tradition” of the CIA.  Haspel replied that bringing truth to power is her favorite CIA motto.  Already outraged at the whitewashing of the language of torture by the Democratic Senators and the accolades being heaped upon Haspel by the Republican Senators, I felt compelled to invoke that time-honored tradition by asking Haspel what no senator was willing to ask her:  “What did you do to human beings in U.S. custody?”  The answer was pretty obvious to me: you tortured them.
But even before addressing the grotesque fact of now CIA head Haspel having been in charge of torturing human beings, let’s go back to the fact of the US taking people into custody without due process in the first place, often indefinitely.  We live in a country that now is holding hundreds of thousands of human beings in prisons and “detention centers” — and perhaps black sites as well, although with so much state secrecy we have no way of knowing.  And decent people are rising to the demand to speak truth to power.
WAT member David Barrows paid his fine for speaking out in Haspel’s confirmation hearing and then a week later attended the full Senate session where she was confirmed.  As many of us know, David has a booming voice, and he made a powerful statement to that august body:
“You senators who vote to approve a human torturer and destroyer of evidence of human rights violations are violators yourselves of the Geneva Conventions, the Convention Against Torture and you violate the Nuremberg principles.  Hitler, too, had lawyers to excuse torture. All my life the CIA has committed crimes against humanity. No one has ever been held accountable. We tortured 3,000 Vietnamese to death under Operation Phoenix.  The CIA has overthrown four democracies: Iran, Guatemala, Chile…”
Asylum Seekers and their Children
Although torture has unfortunately receded from mainstream consciousness, across the country decent people are being moved to speak truth to power against the administration’s indefinite detention of asylum seekers at our borders. The administration’s justifying rhetoric invokes a brand of isolationist nationalism that is not only cruel, it’s unAmerican.
The administration added a cruel strategy to punish refugees who enter our country: in the past three months, over 3,000 infants and children have been jailed, separately from their parents, ostensibly to send a warning for other parents not to have the audacity to flee dangerous situations with their children.  When media coverage was substantial a massive public reaction followed.
The outrage over these vulnerable children being taken from their parents has not only mobilized the people; our elected leaders are speaking out.  Senator Nelson and US Representative Wasserman Schultz challenged the administration after being refused entry to a detention center holding vulnerable minors.  ICE assures that detained children have all their needs met, but the cloak of secrecy prevents us from knowing.
The word democracy can’t be used for a government in which elected representatives are not allowed access to the State’s prisons.  While the president has now ostensibly reversed the policy of separating families, lack of transparency and expressed unwillingness to reunite families already torn apart indicate that the injustice continues.
Refugees and Their Families
Communities are speaking out about other ruthless anti-immigrant activities.  Immigrants living and working productively in communities throughout the US have increasingly been terrorized by the fear of imprisonment and deportation. ICE oversees internment camps which contain “a hidden population of detainees who are effectively forever prisoners of the agency….. in 2015 ICE detained more than 355,000 people — some 3,166 of them had been held for more than a year, including 169 for more than three years, 32 for more than five years, and five for more than eight years.”  Communities across the country have mobilized to protest this outrageous policy and support the impacted immigrants.
On June 6, 2018, heavily armed ICE agents backed by helicopters and dogs raided two garden stores in Sandusky, Ohio, arresting 115 employees.  Alarmed by the raids, the community centered its concern on the impact of the arrests on the families. WAT member Josie Setzler and Tiffin Area Pax Christi helped organize a Rally for Justice in Immigration. According to local news, “People gathered at Suhr Park … to let the country know they wouldn’t remain quiet about more than 100 people being taken away from their families and the community.”  Fifteen-year-old Natalie Alonzo and her friends organized “Los Ninos de Corsos” to raise money for the families whose bread-winners had been taken into the black hole of ICE, where lawyers and family-members have no idea if and when their loved ones are to be deported.
Grass-roots organizations such as No More Deaths/No Mas Muertes have long attempted to help prevent asylum-seekers crossing the US-Mexico border from dying in the desert.  WAT and No More Death member Paula Miller says that volunteers putting out water and providing first aide to vulnerable immigrants in the desert risk being prosecuted themselves for assisting and harboring “illegal aliens.”
The People Speak Truth to Power
So what do we do? We speak truth to power.  Those with the power — whether Senators or heads of agencies — may attempt to co-opt our ideas and phrases, but they can’t stop us from resisting and challenging their insidious double-think.  Entire communities are speaking truth to power over the injustice of ICE’s accelerating overreach. The world is watching.
On June 20, the United Nations observed World Refugee Day.  Not many Americans may know about World Refugee Day, but we do know it’s wrong to lock up people who are fleeing danger or economic disaster, and especially wrong to separate children from their parents.
WAT will stand with Justice for Muslims Collective on June 26th, the UN International Day in Support of Survivors of Torture, remembering especially the Muslim men who have been held for over 15 years and tortured in Guantanamo prison. We will continue to challenge torture by agents of the US that has gone unpunished.
We who choose to speak truth to power in the halls of Congress will continue our witnesses.  Of those arrested for speaking out against Haspel’s confirmation, four are still in court.  Medea Benjamin, Tighe Barry and Pete Perry paid fines, and Janice Sevre-Duszynska will go to trial on July 16th.  Ray McGovern, who was knocked to the ground and injured by the police after speaking in the hearing, was charged with resisting arrest and disrupting Congress and has a hearing on July 23rd.  I was charged with disrupting Congress and have a hearing on July 25th. David Barrows has a hearing on July 11th for his speech from the Senate Gallery.
Is it enough? It depends on what you consider enough.  We certainly weren’t able to prevent Haspel’s inevitable confirmation, any more than we’ve been able to hold her and others accountable for facilitating torture of human beings in their custody.  In the hearing, it was suggested that waterboarding is illegal now, but that it was legal when Haspel was in charge of the prison.  Somehow, the fact that Congress passed a law making waterboarding illegal wiped out the fact that this modern-day euphemism for a medieval torture method was already illegal in U.S. law, international law and in the Constitution.  Why was there not one Senator on the Committee able to insist on this fact, and by extrapolation, to ask why Haspel and numerous other high-level U. S. officials are not being prosecuted for participating in torture?  So we will continue to call out the many U.S. officials, both elected and appointed, who are complicit in this travesty of justice.
My final salvo, as I was being led from the room by police, was, “You are a torturer!” I could not leave this elephant in the room unacknowledged.  This truth did not matter to the high government officials in the room.  The torturer being interviewed by the esteemed Senators ultimately said all the right things and was promoted to head the CIA.  But this won’t stop some citizens from speaking truth to power.

Incorrect Quotes Tag Game
@writingpotato07 has an open tag here (very funny btw asldkjf) and this looked so damn fun, so here i am!
Rules: Use this incorrect quotes generator to create incorrect quotes for your characters, and tag as many people as quotes you post.
i am tagging @incandescent-creativity, @aohendo, @ink-flavored, @ceph-the-writing-spook, @apollowritesstuff, and anyone else who wants to do it!
Tigh: I only have 6 weeks left to live. Tu: Oh my god, really?! Tigh: It's just a guesstimate based on the choices I've made.
Ileao: I want to kiss you. Alex, not paying attention: What? Ileao: I said if you die, I wont miss you.
Izzy: What's gone wrong, Tu? Tu: Hey! That’s one hell of a thing to say to a person. Just because I’m calling doesn’t mean there’s a crisis. Izzy: That’s technically true, I suppose. Why are you calling? Tu: Well... There’s a crisis.
Push: Let’s watch Sharkboy and Lavagirl. Taylor: Okay. Push: And make out during the scary parts. Taylor: Th- Taylor: The scary parts. Taylor: Of Sharkboy and Lavagirl.
Vice's Parents: Didn't you die?! Vice: That was weeks ago, dude. Things change.
Miss Lane: Well Ileao, I have to say, I'm really disappointed. Ileao: Well, you didn't HAVE to say it. You could've just thought it.

Tryna warm my parents up to the idea of me having two partners, but I know they won’t react well the first time and I don’t want them scaring away my actual partners (when I finally get some). Need two disposable fake partners for my parents to let out the brunt of their judgment on. You’ll get a free dinner out of it, and I can get you a coupon for a free coffee at the local shop. Message me for details.
Fire (FP)
She furrows her eyebrows, opening her mouth to argue more, and Levi scowls and cuts her off. “No, you know what? I don’t wanna hear any of your bullshit right now. Triz is a lovely woman, and, in case you didn’t notice, he just got done standing up for me and protecting me while you stood by and let your friends call me ‘unworthy’ as an attempt to make me keep hurting myself to please them. That’s bullshit. That shouldn’t have happened.” Ey’re more fired up than ey probably should be- No. No, ey’re not fired up enough. That shouldn’t have happened.
Ember (FP)
“We met first,” ey say, which is technically true, “but we love Val just as much, obviously.”
“How’d you meet?” Truth asks, tilting her head. Please god can someone else answer for once-
“We all met on November third,” Val says, and holy shit. How is she this bad at this.
Truth furrows her eyebrows. “I thought Levi said ey met Triz before you-”
“We met Val on our anniversary!” Triz blurts. “At a… library!”
“You spent your anniversary at a library?” Hope asks, pausing to put a hand on her hip. No, god, can they please keep walking? Levi can’t take much more of this.
Spark (SLS: Pride)
“I’m okay now,” Tigh says. He’s turned to face her, now, his legs tucked under himself, and he pulls her in for a proper hug. “I’m out. I’m safe. I go to a real therapist, and I don’t talk to my mother, and I only freak out a little when something sparks in the lab. I’m okay, Tu. I’m doing just fine.”
She understands, now, why he’s closer to ‘insecure’ than he is to ‘prideful.’ It isn’t self-deprecation, not always, not quite. It’s the relief of finally finding a way to do something important, and the fear of being asked to give more than he has to offer.

Find the Word Tag
thanks to @ceph-the-ghost-writer for the tag! this reminded me that sls is actually really fun and i should get back to writing it asd;flkj
i'll be tagging @mallthologist @jezifster @writing-and-trying, @juls-writes, @moonlitinks, @aquil-writes, @unholyspaceprophet
your words are: believe, awful, particular, tug, and lying.
my words were: impulse, main, enhance, table, and temperature, and i'll be finding them in seven lovely sins! I couldn't find "enhance" or "table" so I just used some longer excerpts to make up for it ^.^
Impulse
Vice’s parents have always been the bleeding-heart types; they’d take in all the kids in the world, if they could. They never did, but it’s one thing to want to save up enough money to be absolutely sure you could support a second kid no matter what and then go through the entire adoption process, and another entirely to impulsively tell a teen in active danger that he has a safe place in your home.
Vice waits for some form of jealousy or defensiveness to crop up in her chest… but it doesn’t. She realizes she wouldn’t actually mind having Eli around more often. He’s genuinely her friend, someone she almost trusts. She doesn’t want him to take over her entire life… but she does really like him.
And that is horrible for her mission. How is she supposed to say ‘no’ to keeping one of her first friends and getting her parents back? She wants to tell them everything. What could possibly make her want to go back to Hell, when it doesn’t have her parents and it doesn’t have Eli?
Main
Before she’s anywhere near ready, she finds herself in front of NASA’s main doors. The security guards nod her in, and she takes a deep breath as she steps into the elevator, pressing the button to send her up to the human research and invention floor. She counts her steps as she walks down the hall, and she holds her breath as she takes her lab coat off the hook and shrugs it on, and she finally exhales as she swings open the doors to see-
Sienne.
“We are going to be civil,” Sienne hisses, “because we are at work, and Tigh is not going to sacrifice his dream job because of your sick, twisted self.”
“What?” Tu squeaks, not quite comprehending the situation.
“I know what you are,” Sienne says proudly, hands on her hips. “And I have only one thing to say to you.”
“Uh huh,” Tu says, wondering if Sienne’s the type of person to come into work while high. She tries to stand up on her tiptoes and peer past Sienne, looking for Tigh. “And what’s that?”
Sienne moves to block her view, and a big, shark-like grin crosses her face. “Nice fucking try, Jezebel!”
Table
He begins tinkering with a tiny machine part on the table, explaining as he goes. “This is part of one of my current projects,” he says. “It needed a better eximium sensor—wait, you know what eximium is, right?”
“‘Course I do,” she says, because who doesn’t? “But I like hearing your voice, so tell me anyway.”
Tigh’s blush gets heavier, and he fumbles the screwdriver in his hand for a second. “Uh- Right, sure, yeah! So, eximium is the metal that everyone has in their blood. It contributes to your immune system, but also—for a small bit of the population—it activates in such a way as to give you a very malleable sort of magic, or powers. Thing is, eximium is still a metal, which means that we can manipulate it with the right machines.”
“Which is what you’re doing,” she replies.
“What I’m trying to do,” he corrects her with a little smile.

Part 1.2: Pride
3,500 words - Tu, Tigh, Miss Lane briefly
No warnings
next chapter of seven lovely sins! i think this one's pretty cute. we get to see tu and tigh's relationship starting to develop, and watch tu battle with her own emotions--i don't think any of the other demons start liking their mortals as quickly as tu does... except for maybe ileao, who is secretly very soft.
anyway, here we go!
☼☼☼-
Tu looks at the date on the calendar, the 24th of May. It’s crossed off, along with every other date on this month.
She sighs and flips to the next page. She crosses off June 16th.
Okay. So things haven’t gone as planned.
The thing is, Tigh is really fun to hang out around. And with how much he and Sienne hype her up all the time, it’s hard not to get invested in the solid air construct she’s been working on for the past month. And Aeryn makes really great coffee, so maybe she spends half her time at CC Brews instead of cooking up new schemes to get Tigh to fall to his own pride.
Pride which he actually has absolutely none of, if Tu’s being totally honest. She understands why this is a cold case, now; the man breathes like he expects to have to apologize for it. Sure, he’ll infodump for hours about the very concept of eximium as the basis of all magic, or the various niche practices in use for training that magic, or whatever ridiculous new tech he’s working on. But it’s always with an unhealthy dose of self-deprecation, of “it’s really not that great” and “it backfired again yesterday” and “I wouldn’t have such high expectations” and “I just don’t want to make you think it’s anything amazing.”
Tu doesn’t get it. Sure, back when she was alive as a mortal, this tech wasn’t even being dreamed of… but still, even for today’s standards, his stuff is amazing! Sienne’s too, but where Sienne seems more focused on finding a safe way to augment her own body with tech, Tigh—who does plenty of augmenting research too, don’t get her wrong—does a lot more cutting edge eximium research. She still doesn’t completely understand what his current biggest project does, since he’s quite cagey about it, but she knows it has something to do with isolating eximium, which sounds groundbreaking as hell. Back in her day, they barely understood what eximium was—they just knew it was fucking important, because it gave them their magic.
Tigh, though, seems to understand each molecule. He knows where it comes from, what it’s for, its lesser-known properties, how to control and shape it—hell, he has jars of it in powder form on shelves along the walls, and he has a cube of solid raw eximium decorating his desk! Tu doesn’t know how a man like that can have such low self-esteem. Doesn’t he know he’s smarter than all of the scientists from Tu’s time combined?
Her phone dings. It’s Miss Lane—of course they wanted to style the ‘hellphones’ like smartphones, of course they did. “This is taking a while,” the message reads.
Tu scoffs. Of course they’d say that, as if they’d do any better. They just like being passive aggressive, Tu thinks.
“It’s a cold case. Chill out,” Tu replies. She feels very proud of herself, and then wonders if she’s ever made a pun before of her own accord or if Aeryn’s love for them is just rubbing off on her.
She scrolls through the news on her phone. There’s an article about a small section of a park becoming a protected landmark due to the fact that a popular magic user whose magic manifested as forced silencing had stopped a voice-based villain in that very park years earlier. Another article boasts how a famous magic family has moved to Clemen City so their son can get the best magic tutoring available. One more article about how a small village nearby was pleased to welcome a fire-based magic expert for a short visit before he continued his travels.
How can a world with so few magic users be so focused on magic? How can they favor magic over everything else when so few of them can actually do magic?
Tu loves her magic. Tu loves herself. But sometimes, just sometimes, she isn’t proud of either one.
☼☼☼-
Tu is sitting, alone, at a table covered by a tan tablecloth. She has arranged her silverware four times while waiting for Tigh to arrive, and she is getting bored.
At work earlier today, they were working on their respective projects—beside each other, of course. Tigh had been going on and on about some science shit, but Tu had been thinking “What makes a man more prideful than having a really pretty girlfriend?” so Tu had cut him off to say “Do you wanna meet somewhere after work? Just you and me this time,” and he had grinned and given her this weird, knowing look, almost like she and him were in on a secret together, and she’d said, “Great! What about that new landmark in the park, the one for the magic user with the anti-sound powers-” and he’d laughed and said “Hell no!”
And she’d blinked at him for a bit, just trying to process what went wrong, until he laughed again and continued, “Nothing against you, I just don’t like that hero. What about dinner?”
She’d been too relieved by the first aid he’d just applied to her bruised pride to care at all about how weird that was. She’d accepted.
And now here she is, and there’s no sound hero in sight (Tu can’t for the life of her remember that dumb hero’s name), but Tigh is late anyway.
“Table for two?” asks the waiter, in the passive aggressive kind of way that makes it clear he doesn’t think Tu’s second person is coming.
“Yeah,” Tu says, nearly a sneer with all the defensiveness that crops up in her chest. “He’ll be here soon. Give it a minute.”
She really doesn’t wanna have to go home and spend the whole night thinking about what went wrong. In a fully self-aware way, she’s not sure her pride could handle it. Also, she hates how much she cares. She knows this is just a job, that she’s trying to boost Tigh’s ego but shouldn’t be putting her own on the line. She shouldn’t be this attached, she shouldn’t be this invested, and she definitely shouldn’t be this vulnerable.
Tu glances at her phone. It’s only been half an hour since she got here, right on time, but it feels like longer. With a glance at the door and a long, tired sigh, she pulls up the messaging app to text Tigh something totally normal like “haha of course a big man like you had better plans,” except she can’t really figure out how to word it in a way that doesn’t sound bitter.
But then the elegant bell above the doors rings twice, and Tigh bursts through like he tripped over the threshold. “Hi,” Tu can just barely hear him saying to the wait staff, his voice interspersed with quick breaths. “I, uh- My friend Tu probably got a table—hopefully still has a table—uh, is she back there…?”
The waiter who’s been badgering Tu looks at Tigh like he’s seen a ghost. Tu takes great pleasure in the shocked bulge of his eyes. “You’re… late,” the waiter says.
Tigh huffs out a laugh. “Uh, yeah, trust me, I know. So…?”
The waiter shakes his head and points back towards Tu’s table, and when Tigh sees her looking at him, his whole face lights up and his entire body straightens. She can’t help but to wave at him when a tiny smile creeps onto her face despite herself.
“Tu!” Tigh says, hopping the railing to the raised platform her table is on. He slides into the chair opposite hers, and the chair’s legs rattle against the floor as it settles unevenly. “Hi, fuck, I’m so sorry!”
She laughs without entirely meaning to when he almost knocks the salt shaker off the table with his hand gestures. “Like the waiter said,” she says wryly, “you’re very late. I’m kind of angry, honestly.”
He grimaces, nervously playing with the tablecloth. “Yeah, I- You know what? That’s fair. That’s totally reasonable. I didn’t mean to be late, something blew up in my face, uh, literally, so I was running behind a little, uh, and anyway I totally get it if it’s too late and you have to leave.”
“You want me to leave?” she asks, raising an eyebrow. “Wait, no, go back to the explosion thing-”
“I do not want you to leave,” Tigh says, groaning and running his hand down his face. “Sorry, yeah, I think the explosion knocked my social hardware loose.”
“You mean you aren’t always like this?”
“Tu!” he laughs, relaxing a little.
She rolls her eyes, leaning forward to rest her elbows on the table. “Explosion?”
“Right, yeah, uh, my project kind of just… I mixed the wrong chemicals and then gave it way too much power.”
“Were you hurt?” she asks incredulously. She can’t believe he didn’t tell her the answer to that question first. She can’t believe she had to ask.
“Oh, uh- Well, not a lot,” he says, still showing her that stupidly genuine smile of his. “Might’ve knocked a few screws loose, y’know- That was a joke, by the way. I am not a cyborg. Uh, but I’m working on it.”
Tu laughs again, shaking her head. “What’s wrong?” she asks with a soft smile.
“Huh?”
“I mean, why are you talking at a mile a minute?”
Tigh’s eyes widen, his hands instantly falling to his lap. He looks almost stricken. “Oh. Sorry, my bad-”
“No!” Tu says quickly, a little too loudly in her haste. She wrinkles her nose and sits back, regaining her composure. “No, sorry, I was just… worried. It’s okay if you talk fast. But you sound kind of nervous, that’s all.”
Tigh’s posture slowly relaxes, and he nods in understanding. Tu finds herself relaxing alongside him. “Well,” he begins, slowly, “I guess it’s just…”
He’s nervous about going on a date with me, Tu thinks excitedly. She knows she shouldn’t be excited, but she is.
“I’m not the best at explaining things,” he says after a moment of pause. He’s looking down at his hands. “I’m just afraid I won’t be able to explain any of this shit to you without sounding like I’m speaking gibberish, and then you’ll lose all interest because of my shit explanations.”
Tu blinks. She narrows her eyes.
“…What?” she asks.
He tilts his head, the picture of confusion. “What’s wrong?”
Tu leans forward, just as confused. “What- What do you mean, explaining things!?”
“You wanted me to get you up to date on all the newest eximium research, right?” he asks, furrowing his eyebrows. When she doesn’t respond, he bites his lip for a second and then continues, a bit more uncertainly. “‘Cause I was talking about the eximium statistics for my project and you looked really confused, and then you cut me off and asked to meet up without Sienne. So I thought your last place hadn’t taught you any of the new-era eximium information, and you didn’t want Sienne to know you were confused, but you needed help. I- Was I wrong?”
Holy shit. He’s not even being prideful, thinking he knows more than her. He just saw she was confused, saw she wanted to be alone with him, and figured the most logical conclusion from those two facts together was that she wanted a crash course on science, without any embarrassment from the coworker she hates.
Good god, this man is an idiot.
“No, you were right,” Tu grits out, forcing a smile through clenched teeth. Maybe he isn’t interested in her after all. Then again, what kind of guy wouldn’t be interested in someone like Tu? Like, just look at her! Unless- “Are you gay?” she asks bluntly.
Tigh blinks. “…Bi,” he says simply. “Uh. You?”
“Also bi,” she says back. Huh. So then why the hell doesn’t he like her? No way he’s that insecure, he’s gotta at least know he’s good-looking, and the world’s leading eximium scientist to boot… Could it be that he’s really just a new brand of stupid?
“So,” Tigh says awkwardly, a light blush across his cheeks, “Where should I start?”
Tu sighs, resting her chin in her hand. “Wherever you want, babe.”
Tigh’s blush worsens—has she not used that term with him before? God, he’s dumb. “Right, yep, cool. So, skipping all of the old stuff you probably know and jumping right to present-day discoveries…”
“You know what?” Tu asks, on a whim. She’ll be here all night hearing nerd shit anyway, she might as well actually get caught up on all the discoveries that have been made since she died. “Start at the actual beginning. Tell me everything.”
Tigh looks surprised, but he shrugs and hurries on, his excitement growing visibly. What a nerd, Tu thinks a little too fondly
“Cool! Discovery of eximium, the first time humans realized we had metal in our blood…”
He talks for hours. Every so often, he says, “I’m not boring you, right?” and Tu says “No, of course not” even though she only understands about half of the words coming out of his mouth. God only knows why, but she doesn’t mind. She’s enjoying herself.
When they finally decide to leave—not because Tigh has exhausted his knowledge of eximium history, but because the restaurant is closing—Tu asks, “Split the bill?” and then starts rifling through her purse when he nods in agreement. Only after checking the inner pocket for the third time does she realize and admit to herself that she left her wallet at home.
“Fuck,” she says without thinking. Oh, god, how embarrassing. Tigh is definitely going to laugh at her. Fuck, she messed up—will she even be fit for the mission after this? There’s no way he’ll respect her after she made such an embarrassing mistake, she might have to tell Miss Lane she’s compromised-
“I can pay!” Tigh says, already handing his card to the waiter (a new one, since the other has long since gone home). “Buy me a drink from Aeryn’s sometime and we’ll call it even.”
He doesn’t say it snidely, like he’s judging her for not being able to pay. He doesn’t smirk afterward, like he thinks he’s better than her now. He doesn’t grimace, like he realizes she’s not worth his time.
“It’s fine,” he says gently, his voice carrying softly across the table and snapping her out of her panic. His smile is one of care, not cruelty. “Tu, I forget my wallet all the time. Can’t tell you how much I’d owe Nora if she ever held me to it.” He reaches across the table, lightly resting his hand over hers. “It was just a mistake, okay? Not the end of the world.”
“Not the end of the world,” Tu repeats, the fog slowly clearing from her mind. Her face flushes with heat when she fully comes back to herself, but she doesn’t feel as mortified as she probably should. Tigh makes it feel like it doesn’t matter. “Right, yeah, obviously,” she laughs, nervous but no longer scared.
At some point, the waiter returned with Tigh’s card. He squeezes Tu’s hand and then slips the card back into his wallet. “I can walk you to your car?” he offers.
She scoffs, trying to force up a playful tone to cover the dregs of her embarrassment. “What, you think I can’t take care of myself?”
He scoffs right back. “Please,” he says, grinning. “You could kick my ass into next week.”
“‘Into next week?’” she laughs, shaking her head and following him to the door. He walks backwards to be able to look at her, and his eyes crinkle with joy. “No one says that anymore!”
“Yesterday you called something ‘nifty,’ what the hell are you talking about!?”
Tu is still laughing when they step out into the parking lot. Tigh scans the pavement and then tilts his head, narrowing his eyes. “Hey, you did drive here, right? I don’t think any bus routes are active this late.”
“Nah, I just walked,” Tu says, waving off his concern. “On air. You know how it is.”
“Tu, it’s cold!” Tigh says, sounding exasperated. “And you’re not even wearing a- Jesus Christ, Tu, you’re a maniac.” Despite his words, he slips off his jacket and drapes it over Tu’s shoulders, and she feels warmth in her cheeks again as she pulls it tight around herself.
“Yeah, well, tough,” she replies, rolling her eyes and pretending her heart isn’t beating double time. She glances around the parking lot. “Anyway, looks like you didn’t drive either!”
Tigh pulls a ring of keys out of the pocket of his skinny jeans and presses a button on a car fob, and Tu hears a ridiculous vroom sound for several seconds before a hovering motorbike zooms around the corner and skids (metaphorically) to a stop in front of her and Tigh.
“You think so?” he asks with a shit-eating grin. She rolls her eyes again, and his smile turns softer. “Hop on, I’ll drop you off outside your apartment.”
Tu bites her lip, considering, but… well, why shouldn’t she indulge a little bit? Just because she’s Pride doesn’t mean she can’t have a little Gluttony, a little Greed, a little Lust, just for fun.
“Okay,” she says quietly, nearly a whisper. Tigh gives her a smile that makes her feel warmer just by looking at it, and then he puts one leg over the bike and dramatically revs the engine—such a theatre kid. He gestures for Tu to get on behind him, and she nods just to hype herself up. Then she hops onto the seat, immediately putting her arms around his waist for stability (just for stability, she swears) and leaning her head against his shoulder (that one’s harder to justify. Maybe she’s cold). “Helmets?” she asks after a moment, her voice muffled by his shirt.
“No fuckin’ way this bike is gonna let you get hurt,” he says, the most confident she’s ever heard him. “If you have so much as a scrape when we park, I’ll turn it into scrap metal.”
She’s pretty sure the bike can’t register threats, but then again, it’s clearly a custom job by Tigh. If any vehicle would respond to human pleas, it’d damn well be his.
“Fine, then. Show me what this thing can do,” she challenges him.
“Hold on tight,” he says playfully. She resists biting his shoulder just to be annoying, but before she can argue the pros and cons, he’s taking off.
The hoverbike flies across the streets, a foot or so off the ground at all times, the engine revving in a way that almost sounds pretty. When they come up too close behind another car, Tigh squeezes the handles and the bike rises further into the air, zipping over the car as though it were simply part of the road.
“Tigh, you criminal!” Tu yells over the wind, and Tigh’s laughter quickly joins her own.
“It’s not a crime if they can’t catch me!” he shouts back, and Tu laughs again and knocks her head against his shoulder.
“The cops would disagree!”
By the time they reach Tu’s apartment, it’s only been a couple of minutes, but Tigh’s hair is a windswept mess and Tu think she’ll be combing out tangles for days. All the same, it’s worth it for the glow of his smile, the rosiness of the cold air on his cheeks, the way he glares threateningly at the bike when Tu has trouble getting off.
“So?” he asks, a little breathless.
“So what?” she replies, turning her nose up.
He huffs, a smile on his face. “Tu, come on!”
“It was great,” she relents, too easily for her liking. “It was really, really great, Tigh. Thank you.”
His face flushes pink, and he looks down at his shoes. “Oh, I mean- Yeah, ‘course, you’re welcome. Any time.”
Tu can’t help herself. She leans forward, has to tilt her head up just a bit, and- and at the last second she redirects, kisses his rosy cheek instead of his lips, and quickly pulls back. She feels her own cheeks turning red, but she doesn’t let herself look away; she looks Tigh in the eye, now that he’s making shocked eye contact with her, and smiles confidently. “I might take you up on that,” she says. “See you tomorrow.”
“Yeah,” he says dumbly, his eyes wide as saucers. “Yeah, always.”
She shakes her head fondly and walks to the door of the apartment complex, buzzing herself in and heading toward the steps. She glances back just for a moment, long enough to see Tigh holding his hand over his cheek, looking totally shell-shocked even as a large grin spreads across his face.
The extra month was worth it.

Part 1.1: Pride
3,300 words - Tu Tela, Tigh Barrows, Sienne Pelet, Aeryn Meak
Warnings: fantasy discrimination (not racism or homo/transphobia, though it's adjacent in ways to magic ableism)
i completely forgot to explain in-world lmao but this wip is mostly for my dnd group, where we all know that NASA actually stands for "Neuroanatomical Augmentation in Superelectronic Advancement," it's basically for cyborg shit but it also involves things like the study of eximium (to be explained) which highly effects cyborg shit. look i went overboard a little, i came up with this acronym to replace real-world nasa years ago sksksk
anyway, here's the next chapter of Tu's part!
☼☼☼-
When Tu first sees Tigh, she knows she was meant for Lust, because hot damn does he look pretty.
Then his coworker says “I’m Sienne!” in the most grating combination of a Canadian and southern accent Tu’s ever heard. “Where’re ya from, eh?”
That would be a hard question, if Tu wasn’t incredibly prepared for every single aspect of this assignment. “Moonviewe,” she says proudly.
Sienne frowns, little laugh lines crinkling the dark skin by her mouth. “Really? I used to live there! Didn’t know someone else had moved in after I left, I mean we get so few people…”
Of course Sienne would be one of the only ten people to live on Moonviewe. Fucking of course, she would. Tu watches as the wires sticking out of her two hair buns spark harmlessly. “I only lived there for a bit, but I consider it home,” Tu says politely, her voice sickly sweet.
“Huh,” Sienne says, shrugging carelessly. “That’s more than I ever cared for it!”
“So interesting,” Tu says. Her smile aches. “Anyway, I’m Tu. And you are..?” She leans forward, toward the man somewhat hiding behind Sienne.
“Tigh,” he says finally, stepping out from behind her. He smiles nervously. “Uh, Tigh Barrows. Nice to meet you.”
Tigh does not look like a scientist, let alone a successful one. He has fluffy, curly black hair that looks like it hasn’t been brushed in days, he’s wearing eyeliner that has been accidentally smeared and yet doesn’t quite cover the bags under his eyes, and his lab coat has an entire bottle of Redbull sticking out of the pocket.
He’s cute, though. Korean, dark eyes, genuine smile. Wearing a dark green hoodie and sinfully tight skinny jeans under his lab coat, black studs in his ears, bracelets around his wrists that jangle when he reaches out his hand for Tu to shake. He looks like he started on the goth aesthetic and then got bored halfway through. It kind of works, in a very… dorky kind of way.
“It is nice,” Tu says, somewhat dreamily, as she shakes his hand. Oh, here she goes again—she’s so prone to crushes, it’s insane. Well, but it’s nice, too, isn’t it? She’s not sure she’d give that particular trait away, even if she had the choice.
This time, though, it can’t go anywhere. This mortal will be in Hell by the end of the week; he’ll just be a pretty face passing by.
Works for Tu!
“Uh, so,” Tigh says, clearing his throat. Tu startles a little and drops his hand, but he just smiles. “How long have you been working here at NASA?”
“Oh, I’m a new hire,” Tu says brightly.
“A new-” Tigh’s smile turns strained. “Sorry, what?”
“What do you mean, a new hire!?” Sienne shrieks. “It took us years to get promoted to this department!”
“Seven years, precisely,” Tigh mumbles, his gaze fixed on the floor somewhere behind Tu. He doesn’t seem entirely there, his attention taken by the idea of Tu getting so far so fast. Oh, this assignment will be easy.
“Wow, such a long time!” Tu says. She uses her demon powers—which appear spectacularly similar to the broad magic a lucky few mortals possess—to make herself a simple blue chair to lounge on. “I didn’t even get an interview, weirdly.”
Tigh’s face looks tense, like he can’t decide whether to be awed, or angry, or hurt. Sienne makes the decision for him and scowls. “Oh. So you weren’t hired for your skills, you were hired for your magic,” she says dryly, unimpressed.
“Then again,” Tigh says weakly, trying to be optimistic, “it would be nice to have someone with magic around so our research could go more smoothly. I mean, if Tu’s willing, we could get blood samples and eximium scans from her instead of having to ask the supervisor for volunteers.” He looks up at Tu again, seeming to grow more excited as he speaks. “Wait, yeah, this could be great!”
Sienne grabs his shoulders, spinning him around to face her. “We worked up from interns, Tigh, and now she’s just barging in-”
“And she’s here now,” Tigh says pointedly, eyes flicking over to Tu for a second, “so there’s no point in making her feel bad for something she can’t help.”
Sienne is quiet for a moment. Then she huffs and shrugs. “Fine! Whatever you say, maverick.”
Tu freezes.
“I’m sorry, what was that?” she asks quietly.
“Maverick,” Sienne says, turning back to her with a broad smile. She doesn’t look teasing, or mean—just talking. “Blank slate, traddie, plastic, you get the gist. People without powers.”
“That’s a slur,” Tu says angrily, her blood boiling as she moves to her feet and takes a step closer to Sienne.
“Can it really be a slur when traditional people are the majority? You’re one of the five percent, sweetcheeks! Blank slate over here isn’t just the tradition or whatever, he’s the default!”
Tu’s arm shoots out to grab the lapels of Sienne’s lab coat and yank her closer. “Stop. Fucking. Calling him that.”
Tigh makes a startled noise and squeezes himself in between them, pulling Tu’s hands off Sienne’s coat and pushing Sienne away. “Hey, hey, it’s fine! Look, she’s traditional too—at least, she is now—and she’s kind of right—I mean, what does it matter?” He laughs anxiously, eyes flicking between the two girls. “I don’t mind, really, not from her.”
Tu narrows her eyes at Sienne, but then she crosses her arms and looks away. “You shouldn’t let her treat you like that,” she grumbles, but she doesn’t press.
(She remembers her mother, back from when she was alive. She remembers how her mother would praise her for continuing the family legacy of having magic, how her mother would force her into training sessions and interviews and PR fronts, how her mother would condemn all the crowds of ‘normal’ people with their lack of powers that made them so useless, how her mother would scream at her and put her into horribles situations and tell her how she’s not good enough and-)
(And, well, Hell is a relief compared to that.)
“Right,” Tigh says, grateful for the way out. “Well, compromise, right? Don’t say that kind of shit around Tu, Sienne. And Tu, don’t, uh… bodily attack your coworkers. Please.”
Tu figures this is not the kind of first impression she was intended to make. But, then again, maybe it’ll convince Tigh that he’s more deserving of the upcoming promotion than she is…? Either way, this certainly isn’t going to plan, and it makes Tu a little nervous. She nods her agreement to Tigh and tries to seamlessly move to one of the workstations, ending the conversation, and Tigh and Sienne let her. God, what a disaster.
Looking over the workstation, though, she finds she has absolutely no idea what to do. There are vials of variously-colored liquids, tiny machines she’s never even seen before, jars of powdered metal that might be the eximium that gives mortals magic. What is she supposed to do with any of us? She doesn’t even know how to pretend to be busy here.
So she decides to get to work on a second impression. She scans the room, feels a stab of gratefulness that Sienne and Tigh are now well separated, and then sidles up next to Tigh. “Hey,” she says quietly, almost a whisper. She’d rather Sienne not hear her. “I’m a little confused… but you seem to know what you’re doing. Could you help me out?”
“Sure,” Tigh says, seeming a bit confused himself but willing nonetheless. “What do you need help with?”
Tu laughs nervously. “Um… everything?”
“What do you mean? Like, is there a specific thing you’re confused about or-”
“All of it. Just, all of it. Maybe you could show me what to do…?”
Okay, fine. So maybe she’s flirting a little bit. But what’s the harm in that? Hell, this could help a lot. If she gets real close to him, praises him, compliments him, tells him he’s the best guy she’s ever known, that’ll definitely boost his pride! And so what if Tu gets something out of it as well? That’s just an unintended benefit.
“I mean… I guess?” Tigh moves over, allowing Tu to stand beside him. He sounds uncomfortable, but when Tu glances up at him out of the corner of her eye, he’s smiling with a light dusting of pink across his high cheekbones. Oh, she’s in.
“It’s… not going so great. But, I mean, I’m making progress!”
“Tell me more about it?” she asks, leaning against the table.
He looks away, grinning. “You have to work at least a little bit,” he says teasingly.
“Well, if you insist,” Tu replies. She picks up a tiny screwdriver and starts poking at a motherboard.
“Wha- Stop, what are you doing?” Tigh asks through peels of laughter, and Tu pauses.
“I- I dunno? I’m copying you!”
“Why?” Tigh asks, seeming even more amused.
“I don’t know! I just… I wasn’t really given a goal here!”
Tigh shakes his head in a way that Tu might call fond, if they’d known each other for a little bit longer. “Okay,” he says, putting his work down to turn his full attention to her. “Tell me about your magic.”
“Oh.” She tries to reign in her surprise and reply normally. “Uh… It’s transmutation, mostly. My favored magic turns air into solid air, in basically any shape. I can use it to ‘fly,’ to shield myself, to-”
“Create things?”
“Yeah, why?”
Tigh pushes Tu’s motherboard and tiny screwdriver further onto the table, clearing a space in front of her. “How intricate can you get?”
“Very,” Tu brags with a little smirk. She waves her hand, and a perfect replica of the motherboard appears on the table, made of light blue solid air.
“Amazing,” Tigh whispers, breathing out in awe. “Holy shit, Tu. Okay, so- Maybe you can try to create something with your solid air, instead of with the parts we have lying around?”
“Huh,” Tu says. She’s used to being told to use her magic before anything else, but this feels… different? This feels like seeking out her talents to make things easier on her rather than forcing her to be the best she can be with magic. It still stings a little, but… she’s willing to hear him out. “What do I create, then? Anything?”
“They didn’t tell you what your job was, apparently,” Tigh says, almost in a grumble. “Which means you’re free to go buckwild. Who’s gonna stop you? The supervisors who didn’t even give you a lick of guidance?” He shrugs. “Might as well take advantage of it until they catch on. Just make something cool.”
“Something cool,” Tu echoes, considering. “Hmm… okay. I will.”
Tigh doesn’t ask her to go back to an empty workstation. He doesn’t try to shoo her away. They work side by side, and when Tigh has to move to a different area for parts or tools or data, she moves with him. He smiles down at his work every time.
Whenever Sienne bumps into them or joins them at a table, she is infuriatingly friendly. She jokes with Tu (Tu does not joke back), she smiles at Tu, hell, she even flirts with Tu a couple times! And she just won’t stop. Tigh doesn’t seem to think this is anything out of the ordinary, so maybe she’s like that with everyone? But that doesn’t make it any less annoying, considering Tu kind of hates her more every time she opens her mouth.
“Hey,” Tu says when the work day is almost over—it’s amazing how fast it flew by. She thought this part would be really boring, but it wasn’t. Not at all. “I moved here for the job… I don’t suppose you could show me around town? Maybe take me out for coffee?”
Tigh lights up, and Tu can’t help but grin. “Oh, hell yeah! We can go to CC Brews, my friends co-own the place,” Tigh says brightly.
“Sounds perf-”
“Sienne can come too!”
Tu’s eyes twitches.
“Ohhh,” she says, her smile feeling sharp. “Cool. That sounds so great.”
Tigh doesn’t notice a damn thing wrong, apparently, because he just nods with that big smile on his face as he packs up his things. “You wanna walk there now? It’s not too far from the NASA complex.”
“Sure,” Tu says, resigning herself to her fate. “Why not.”
☼☼☼-
Sienne leads most of the conversation herself for the entire walk to the coffee shop, which is at the very top of Crown Street, where it intersects with Eximiott Plaza. Tigh tries to include Tu whenever he can, but Sienne seems intent on making her as uncomfortable as possible. Tu wishes she was a Lust demon just so it would hurt even more when she rejected Sienne.
(Is she pretty? Yes. Fine, yes. Is she annoying? Oh god yes. Tu thinks there’s no recovering from that level of obnoxiousness.)
When they finally reach CC Brews, though, the look on Tigh’s face is almost worth it. He looks like he’s coming home.
(Not that Tu would know the feeling. How should she know what home is meant to feel like when she’s only ever been judged by her glory?)
“Tigh!” shouts a cheery man’s voice, and then a short, plump man with bright red hair and a face full of freckles bursts through the glass doors of the shop. He waves ecstatically at Tigh and then runs to meet him, throwing his arms around the scientist and squeezing him tightly.
Tigh laughs, hugging him back with a pleased look on his face. “Hey, Aeryn. Rough day?”
“No, but Nora’s busy and you haven’t visited in days,” the guy pouts. Damn, he’s cute too. Every day Tu gets closer to applying for Lust. …Not really. “I’m lonely.”
“Well, good news,” Tigh says, pulling away. “I’m here, and I bought friends!”
“Come on in then!” Aeryn says, gesturing for Tu and Sienne to follow him inside. He seats them at a table near the counter, and pats Sienne on the shoulder with one hand while he digs a notebook out of his pocket with the other. “Nice to see you again, Sienne. And you are…?”
“Tu,” Tu replies. She winks. “Very nice meeting you too.”
Aeryn giggles and takes their orders, but Tu notices that Tigh looks a bit… tense? Once Aeryn leaves, she focuses on Tigh and tries to send thoughts into his mind—a demon power she rarely needs to use, but she did say she’d do her best on this assignment. She’d better use her strongest techniques.
You’re so much better than Aeryn, Tu blasts into Tigh’s head, careful to make it sound like his own voice. Why is she flirting with him?
Tigh furrows his eyebrows. Sienne looks between him and Tu in confusion, but then Tigh shakes his head and looks up, giving Tu a slightly strained smile. “Uh, do you- would you want Aeryn’s number?”
“Oh,” Tu says, frowning. Well, that… didn’t go as planned. “No thanks. I’d rather hang out with you at the moment.”
It’s not the end of the world. She just wasn’t trying hard enough; she didn’t think it’d be a hard sell. Next time, she’ll put more weight into it!
“So!” she says loudly, ready to dive back into normal conversation. “Tell me more about this science shit, pretty boy.”
Tigh blushes. “I- There’s not much to tell,” he stammers. “I’m sure you remember the basics from wherever you went to college for eximium and augmentation stuff.”
“Oh, but we’re going way beyond the basics,” Sienne boasts, leaning back on her chair with her hands on her hips. “I’m working on nanotech for surgeries, and Tigh over here is doing finishing touches on a metal-clearer.”
“A what?” Tu asks, raising an eyebrow.
“It’s actually called a Magic Rake,” Tigh butts in uncertainly.
“And it’s brilliant!” Sienne trills.
Tigh blushes, taking a quick moment to glare at Sienne. “I’m- Look, I’m still working out the kinks,” he says, rubbing the back of his neck and looking away. “But I’m getting closer! At least it does the job now, even if it’s not always that reliable.”
“Oh, I’m sure it’s amazing work,” Tu says, trying to urge him on. “Like Sienne said. Brilliant.”
“Yeah, I wouldn’t say that,” Tigh laughs.
Tu opens her mouth to tell him otherwise, but then Aeryn appears with their drinks. He burned her espresso on purpose, just like she requested, and she greedily gulps it down before he can even set down the second cup she asked for. Aeryn laughs good-naturedly, and Tu grins up at him.
“Tired?” he asks.
“Always,” Tu replies, and Tigh laughs in agreement—Aeryn scrounged up an entire Redbull from god knows where to bring to Tigh—and the conversation moves from there. Tu never has a chance to move it back to Tigh’s supposed aptitude for eximium science.
…She has a good time though. She has a really good time. She goes back to her temporary apartment afterward, and for a moment, she forgets to think about the assignment at all. She just thinks about how damn nice it is that Tigh must thinks she’s the world’s biggest disaster when it comes to NASA’s science, and yet he still seems to like her. She knew fuck-all about the job she’s supposed to be good at, she didn’t show off the magnitude of her magic, by all means she came off as completely useless-
And he likes her anyway.
Tu shakes the thought from her head. Wow, she met a person who wasn’t a dick. It’s not that new, not that shiny and special; she has friends in Pride who like her well enough, she has Izzy who couldn’t care less about her magic or her Tempting statistics. Still, Izzy has to stay in the Circle of Sloth most of time, so they don’t get to visit each other that often, and all of Tu’s friends in Pride are more of work friends than anyone else.
Tigh has friends who feel like a family, who he can tease and joke with and love without fear. And he accepted her into that group without thinking twice.
It doesn’t matter, Tu tells herself again. It’ll just make the job a bit more… enjoyable? Kind?
She’ll get through it. She’ll win, she’ll be the best damn demon Miss Lane has ever seen, she’ll solve this cold case in a couple of weeks, max!
She marks a date on her calendar, three weeks from now on the 24th of May. Bam. By then, she’ll be ready to return to Miss Lane with the good news.
