What is a rival? An equal. A reflection. An echo.
And when I face you on the battlefield, I will look for the only person who knows me.

when amal el-mohtar and max gladstone wrote "this letter is a knife at my neck, if cutting’s what you want" and when they wrote "i write to you in stings, red, but this is me, the truth of me, as i do so: broken open by the act, in the palm of your hand, dying."

“I love you. I love you. I love you. I’ll write it in waves. In skies. In my heart. You’ll never see, but you will know. I’ll be all the poets, I’ll kill them all and take each one’s place in turn, and every time love’s written in all the strands it will be to you.”

back again with the time war art, but a little more monstery this time! I realised the rest of my art is mostly human versions (because they were stylised or sketchy) so,,

ranking sapphic book recs based on how many times my brain short-circuited when I read them
I numbered these backwards because it felt right to end on 9 given what the book is. so this is from 1 (I actually felt pretty functional) to 9 (I was not hinged even in the slightest)
1. The Priory of the Orange Tree
like,,, yeah sometimes i was like ‘w o m e n’ with no other thoughts in my brain but to be fair i do that a lot
2. This is How you Lose the Time War
this one is so FUCKING tender i did feel pretty unhinged fair enough
3. Compass Rose
futuristic,,, pirate,,, lady,,, mean
4. The Space Between Worlds
yeah so there was one specific line in this one that made me ~yell~
5. The Unspoken Name
head empty only tall orc warrior lady
6. Bloody Rose
no thoughts only tattooed pansexual sorceress
it is very important to me that everyone understand that Robyn is Tall and that she is Given a Dowry
8. The Midnight Lie
the sapphic romance in this one makes me feel absolutely feral. just not even hinged a little bit. the like, suave blonde trickster thief lady is simply too much for me
9. Gideon the Ninth
if i think about gideon too hard i have to go lie down

Speaking of your letter. I feel—to speak of it would be to contain what it did to me, to make it small. I don’t want to do that. Even poetry, which breaks language into meaning—poetry ossifies, in time, the way trees do. What’s supple, whipping, soft, and fresh grows hard armor.
If I could touch you, put my finger to your temple and sink you into me the way Garden does—perhaps then. But I would never. So this letter instead.

It’s amazing how much blue there is in the world, if you look. You’re different colors of flame: Bismuth burns blue, and cerium, germanium, and arsenic. See? I pour you into things.
