PICK A CARD: “sixteen carriages drivin' away – while i watch them ride with my fears away…”
★ what will this spring be like for you?
NOTE: i love doing these y'all :,) it always makes me realize how interconnected we all are at the end of the day. just beautiful stuff. take what resonates and leave what doesn't. enjoy!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
PILE 1.
hey pile one! i see the beginning of spring started out pretty great for you. there's some communication coming from someone that's been on your mind for awhile now. you could've suddenly ghosted this person or they could’ve ghosted you, but i see you finally gaining some clarity about the situation and finding common ground with this person. you might find this person to be *a bit* much…in terms of how they approach you and just pop back into your life as if nothing happened and there wasn't a pause in this connection – but you can't deny the chemistry between you two. it's like should i stay or should i go?
you're very indecisive and frazzled about this situation, but you need to trust your gut and see the situation for what it is and not what you want it to be. if you know it’s not worth it, let it go. if you feel in your heart that this relationship is salvageable then give it a go…ultimately it's up to you because this person is all in. hopelessly devoted to you by olivia newton-john just came to mind (that's you) and then next to you by bryson tiller also started playing in mind (that's the person you're thinking of) *sigh* you two are really caught between a rock and a hard place.
i think the biggest problem is that they love to talk a good game, but can they back it up with their actions? you need stability, pile 1! don't just accept any and everything for the sake of company and romance – you can always find someone that will follow through and provide you with the love and care that you desire/deserve. i see this dilemma being a big theme throughout the springtime, it might be cliché to say but weigh the pros and the cons that comes with this person – and if the cons outweigh the pros then you know what to do! ultimately, you will prevail.
i can honestly see you getting yourself back out there and receiving some love offers, and that person not liking it. they're really going to try to compete and "make it up to you" i'm hearing lol there's a bit of a love triangle vibe going on here. a little sneaky part of you might enjoy this cat and mouse game and the fight for your attention hehe i'm hearing tell your girlfriend by lay bankz BYEEEE you're definitely giving main character energy, as you should. just make sure you're making the right choices!
Tumblr media
PILE 2.
hiii pile 2, what's going on my loves? it feels like you'll be starting off walking on eggshells a little bit. i think you're tired of being let down and disappointed, especially when it comes to love. your energy feels tense like you already can sense it coming, but what i want you to do is breath and relax…put the guns down babe. i feel like some of y'alls trauma/past wounds are preventing you from seeing what exactly is on the horizon – which is everything you've ever wanted. it's like the concept of love and being in a solid relationship has been a big grey area for you for a long time, and you're exhausted from the constant fear of someone breaking your trust or getting your hopes up just to let them down.
y'all are very intuitive pile 2 and i know y'all can see more than what meets the eye – so right off the rip if someone is approaching you, you can already peep what kind of agenda/motivation that they have. now this is an amazing ability to have, but you also have to make sure you're at least giving the person a chance before immediately writing them off. when you know, you know. energy never lies and when you peep a vibe, 99.9% of the time your suspicions will be confirmed in some way, shape or form. TRUST YOUR GUT. however, you should open your heart to the limitless possibilities and understand that what will be, will be, my loves. if something doesn't sit right with you, then don't feel afraid to walk away and let it go. you're stronger than you think, and that's exactly why you shouldn't just allow anyone into your space. it seems rough and lonely now, but by may i definitely see some rewarding changes coming in. you might have some options but i don't see them cutting it for you lol i can see you being like mmm eliminated, eliminated and ELIMINATED! i know that's right! it's like you’re weeding out your garden and making room for even more beautiful flowers to grow.
some of the seeds you have planted will manifest this spring, and i see a particular romantic relationship blossoming. it's like there was this pause in your life and then here comes this dreamy ass person just waltzing right into your life, after all those tests, trials and tribulations. you're gonna be so happy and thankful that you didn't settle for less, pile 2. i'm genuinely so excited for y'all <3 awww this person is literally a blessing that you have been waiting on for a longgg time. you'll realize that everything happens for a reason and there was no reason to worry in the first place, because this was always destined to be. 10:10 on the clock <3 love y'all.
Tumblr media
PILE 3.
pile 333 it looks like you might be starting off with a lot on your plate, my loves. you might be juggling school, work, hobbies, hanging out with friends, working out – honestly you're just tryna squeeze in some personal time within this tight schedule. it's been hard on you because you feel like you have your hands tied with so many things…people want you to be everywhere at once, and you simply can't do that.
you ultimately have to do what makes you happy, no matter what and i see you realizing that as you progress throughout the spring. one of your parents or family members might be extremely tough on you, this person might live vicariously through you and it stresses you tf out. you feel like you have to carry this burden that they put on you just because they're family, but guess what? you don’t. pour back into yourself, pile 3. you have so many dreams, plans and goals that you don’t speak about to other people but you need to share your gifts with the world. you will be blessed as you embark on this new journey! will it be easy? maybe not but will it be necessary? ABSOFUCKINGLUTLY. go for it, please. your guides want you to know that you'll be supported as you navigate and try to figure out ways to get these ideas out there and put into motion. you're truly beyond creative and talented, wow.
you're a visionary! so many nights you've cried wondering how and when you will be released from these restraints and be free. your spirit guides want you to know that you have the key, my loves. use it. there's sunshine waiting for you at the end of the tunnel <3 and anyone who has ever mistreated you, or put you down will truly regret it and become so bitter and bewildered that you got away from their negative energy and hatefulness. you will meet people along the way that will truly love you and support you unconditionally. you will start to live your life this spring, pile 3. spread your wings.
Tumblr media
PILE 4.
hey pile 4! i think this spring you're going to come to a realization about something in regards to a romantic (or platonic for some) connection. if this is platonic, then you and this person must be REALLYYYY close, like best friends. this person is not being 100% honest with you, and you've been suspecting in the back of your mind that they are hiding something from you. i see them coming clean about whatever it is or someone might expose them and you'll be like I KNEW IT…it's sad though because the betrayal feels pretty deep.
this person might try to make it up to you, and try to smooth things over – but be very careful with that because i feel like they're no stranger to gaslighting and manipulating people. it's giving a 3rd party situation either they were cheating (if this is romantic) or they were talking shit on you with other people (if this is platonic) either way what they did is fucked up and they know that but they think you're naive enough to forgive them and move on.
see the situation for what it is and move accordingly, pile 4. you need to reevaluate the ones closest to you, and see if these are really the type of people you want around you. you're going to be elevating this spring, and not everyone is going to like that. i see you doing your own thing and just being the most authentic version of yourself with no fucks to give! let this be your green light to not let anyone hold you back with their lies and deception, you are going to rise above this situation and feel so refreshed once you see this person for who they truly are. i can see you taking on a new hobby, engaging in a passion project and/or just deep-diving and learning more about yourself/what you like. it's very much needed, pile 4. let it happen by tame impala is the vibe for you this spring hell yeah YOU GOT THIS.

Prisoner of War Model of the brig Joan D’Arc, 18 guns, 1800-1806
The hull is carved from a solid piece of wood to which the bone planks are secured with brass pins. The masts tops, caps, crosstrees, deadeyes and blocks are made in bone whilst the stunsail yards look as if they are goose quill. The deck is fully equipped with the anchors and their handling gear, the turned brass cannon are mounted on bone carriages and there is a glazed skylight at the stern just forward of the tiller.
This beautiful model is a commissioned work. To realise a good price at market, the models were often named after famous ships of the time, whilst some models included spring-loaded guns operated by cords. It is thought that the name is fictitious as has not been possible to identify the model with a particular vessel.

What is a Fire Lance ?
Tumblr media
The fire lance is the earliest type of hand-held firearm and appeared between the 10th and 11th century during the conflicts opposing the Jurchen Jin dynasty and the Han Song dynasty in modern-day China. As their name suggests, fire lances were at first nothing more than spears to which a bamboo tube opened at the front and filled with black powder was attached. A match protruded from the back of the tube for ignition, and when lit the weapon would spew fire at short range for a couple seconds.
Tumblr media
The Li Hua Qiang ‘Pear Flower Gun’ as depicted in the Huolongjing ‘Fire Dragon Manual’ c.14th century based on earlier documentation.
After the powder charge was spent, the user still had a spear to fight with - much like a bayonet with a rifle - although it was made unwieldy by the weight of the firearm - much like a bayonet with a rifle. As more emphasis was put on the gun part of the weapon, increasing its size and powder charge, the spear head was often discarded altogether. By this point bamboo tubes had been largely replaced by metal ones, and the fire burst was supplemented with shrapnel, making the fire lance the first firearm to use bullets and a clear predecessor to the tiller gun in its small form and the bombard in its larger, stand-fired form. The fire lance made its way to Europe through the Middle East via the Silk Road and was quickly adopted on the local battlefields, seeing on and off use as cavalry weapons from the 14th to the 16th century, described for instance in De la Pirotechnia c.1540 as petards mounted on cavalry lances.
Tumblr media
c.1396 representation of a fire lance used by a European knight.
Although in the field the fire lance was completely eclipsed by its successor the handgonne in a very short amount of time, in siege battles it stuck around in an upgraded form known as the bombastic Sturmspiesz/Sturmspiess or ‘assault pike’. Described in details in Hans Georg Schirvatt’s 1622 book on incendiary weapons, the Sturmspiess consists of a thick polearm base with a long barbed head on which is stuck Brandballen, incendiary devices themselves consisting of wooden barrels covered in linen fabric and an hemp net and filled with pitch, saltpeter and whatever would turn them into a raging inferno. This was complemented with iron spikes and gun barrels filled with shot that would increase and focus the amount of damage caused by the weapon, while a wooden or metal shield stood under the whole mess to protect its wielder. The device was lit using a linstock and pointed or launched at enemy troops or buildings during a siege.
Tumblr media
Part-flamethrowers part-shotgun, it too gave way to safer alternatives like regular cannons around the end of the 17th century. Much like the grenade, it was far too unwieldy a weapon for early modern battlefields until they both reappeared in their contemporary forms in the trenches of World War 1.
Related Vocabulary
Feuerballen, Leucht- or Sturmfässer: Literally ‘fireballs’ and ‘light/assault barrels’, various names designating Brandballen in their various uses as projectiles.
Eruptor: A fire lance loaded with pellets, be it lead shot or porcelain fragments.

ARRR! Talk Like Pirate Day is September 19!
Bringing Her Yards Aportland, Tackles to the Gooseneck of the Tiller, Sheer Off, Running His Guns, Setting Fire to the Powder, Raising Their Metal, Bringing Her on the Careen.
These are terms most of us do not hear very often, or are unfamiliar with, but to ship’s captains and crew during the Age of Sail, all of these were well understood.
Acts of piracy on the high seas had been common from the time people first took to the sea, but for most of us today, the word Pirate conjures up images of 18th-century buccaneers made popular in art, books, and movies. Edward Teach, better known as Blackbeard, Captain William Kidd, Stede Bonnet, Anne Bonny, “Calico Jack” Rackham, Bartholomew “Black Bart” Roberts, and Samuel “Black Sam” Bellamy are just a few of the men and women who “Went on the Account,” that is, turned to piracy.
This book, The Lives and Bloody Exploits of the Most Noted Pirates, Their Trials and Executions, published by Ezra Strong in 1839, describes the lives and careers of many of these pirate captains in colorful detail.
Perhaps the following speech, included in this book, (pages 129 and 130) and attributed to pirate Captain “Black Sam” Bellamy, gives us an insight into the reason why so many seafaring men, during the Age of Sail, chose to became pirates. Captain Bellamy, commanding the Wydah Galley, captured and plundered a sloop commanded by a Captain Beer while cruising off Rhode Island in late February of 1717. Captain Bellamy to Captain Beer:
I am sorry they [Bellamy’s crew] won’t let you have your sloop again, for I scorn to do any one a mischief when it is not for my advantage; - the sloop, we must sink her, and she might be of use to you. Though you are a sneaking puppy, and so are all those who will submit to be governed by laws which rich men have made for their own security; for the cowardly whelps have not the courage otherwise to defend what they get by knavery; but-ye altogether:-them for a pack of crafty rascals, and you, who serve them, for a parcel of hen-hearted numskulls. They vilify us, the scoundrels do, when there is only this difference, they rob the poor under the cover of law, forsooth, and we plunder the rich under the protection of our own courage. Had you not better make one of us, than sneak after these villains of employment?
Captain Beer rejected throwing in with the pirates.

So, 19th century whaling stuff huh? (purely on recommendation from a reblog from ltwilliammowett) Got any recommendations for visual references about the different kinds of whaling ship at the time? Looking for stuff that could of existed around the 1870s towards the 1890s
I’ll unpaywall a longish essay I wrote about a year ago on patreon about the general design of whaleships, that includes images as well as ship register lists that describe them. It’s written from the angle of design decisions I made for a graphic novel, but reading beyond the artmaking conversation I share information about how whalers tended to be shaped and the identifying features they carried.
For additional visual references I’d check out the photo collections of the New Bedford Whaling Museum and the Charles W. Morgan at Mystic Seaport. The photos from the NBWM are early 20th century, but the ships within them are older. Mid 19th century vessels were used well into the late part of the century and into the early 1900s with very little change, though by that point the industry was fully on its way out the door. The sketches in whaling logbooks or on scrimshaw are also a good way to get a sailor’s interpretation of the vessels. Whaleships and Whaling by Albert Cook Church and Sperm Whaling from New Bedford by Elton W Hall (that is a collection of Clifford Ashley’s photographs from his time on the whaler Sunbeam) are good visual books too. ANYWAY, onto the Essay under the readmore, if you’re so inclined.
Melville described Captain Ahab's ship the Pequod as having an “old-fashioned claw-footed look about her." It's a description I always hold in my mind whenever I draw a whaler. Melville, of course, added more whimsy to his iconic vessel, ‘a cannibal of a craft, tricking herself forth in the chased bones of her enemies’. With sperm whale teeth in the place of belaying pins, blocks made of sea-ivory instead of wood, and a whale’s jawbone in place of a tiller. While whalebone blocks and belaying pins were absolutely made on occasion, whaleships in general were not so unique from one another.
In looking at the long list of Ship Registers out of New Bedford, 1796-1850, it seems that if you saw one whaleship you more or less saw ‘em all.
Tumblr media

Typically 19th century whaleships were three-masted ships or barks, and many ships were eventually re-rigged as barks in the latter half of the century as it required a smaller crew to handle. Whalers tended to be squat and broad, built for stability rather than speed. They were going to be at sea for years, with big cavernous holds for hundreds upon hundreds of barrels of oil, as well as equipment and provisions set to last many months without resupply. Thus, sturdiness was the primary focus in their design.
Tumblr media
A cross section of the bark Alice Knowles from G.B. Goode's The Fisheries and Fishery Industry of the United States. Look at all that needed storage space!
With square sterns and a typical ratio of 1:4 for beam to length (as opposed to sleek merchant ships that often were more of a 1:6), describing them as a ‘tub’,--as many whalers grudgingly did when speaking of their floating home--is rather fitting (though perhaps a bit uncharitable). On average, whaleships were 100-115 ft in length, 25-30ft wide, with a tonnage ranging from 180-400.
They were built with few frills. Rarely did they have galleries or figureheads, instead having a simple billet-head or doing without the flourish entirely. My biggest indulgence was giving the Valor a bit more of an elegant prow, which I might regret a little bit since now I have to draw it all the time.
Tumblr media
Billet-head vs figurehead...
Tumblr media
A distinct lack of fanciness!
Tumblr media
I wanted to draw a lady tho. The one of……three women in GTW. Does she count?
Sometimes whalers were painted with false gun ports along their hull, a traditional holdover from when they had to worry more often about wartime enemies in the late 18th century. The hope was that the paint job in combination with her chunky appearance would lead to her being mistaken for a small warship at a distance and thus spared harassment. Even when no longer really necessary, the design often made its appearance.
Tumblr media
Drawing in the logbook of Captain James Coffin of his ship Washington, 1841.
I quite liked the look of the psuedo gun ports, and decided to give the Valor the same as an embellishment for some extra contrast.
Tumblr media
The most identifying feature of a whaler was the tryworks—a large brick oven with heavy iron pots located aft of the foremast and in front of the main hatch. They were built with a pen that would be filled with sea water that flowed freely beneath a checker-board laid brick base to keep the extreme heat from setting fire to the ship. The tryworks would have to be rebuilt for each voyage, so there was sometimes a rather joyous moment at the end of a long trip when the crew would tear the structure apart and toss it in the sea.
Along the port side, three whaleboats would be slung on the davits. Fore, aft, and amidships. A fourth whaleboat would be located on the starboard quarter.
Tumblr media
Screenshot of my desktop background that's some deck plans of a whaleship cos I got sick of digging for the reference every time I had to spatially orient myself when drawing a panel!
Deckhouses were built aft to house the galley and storage lockers, and there was also a ‘hurricane house’ built over the helm to protect whoever was steering during foul weather. Spare whaleboats, as well as harpoons, spades, lances, and other whaling gear would be stored on top of this cover or on hanging shelves beneath it.
Tumblr media
A view of whalers and the afthouse, on the bark Greyhound. Via NBWM.
The final identifying feature of a whaleship was a pair of cross trees, a platform with hoops at the top of the mast where men would be stationed to look out for whales.
Tumblr media
The ship that I’ve referenced the most in my design of the Valor is, of course, the Charles W. Morgan because she can still be visited! The last surviving wooden whaleship, she had a long life of 37 voyages (and a couple movie roles in her sunset years) spanning from 1841-1921 (and one more voyage in 2014! Heartbreak of heartbreaks that I was not on it!). She’s  now a crown jewel at the Mystic Seaport Museum. I was honored to meet her.
Tumblr media
She had some lovely authenticating details that I was happy to put into my own worldbuilding, such as a reference to this gimballed bed. It was designed to always stay level even as the ship rolled, installed by one of the Morgan’s captains to try mitigating his wife's seasickness.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Another favorite detail of mine was how natural daylight was drawn into the cabins and forecastle via deck prisms. Set with their bases flush with the deck above, glass deck prisms were designed to bring light down below.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I remember being surprised at how effective they were. In the photo below, the yellow light is artificial, but the blue light is coming solely from the deck prism. This was on a dark rainy day.
Tumblr media
As such, I really enjoy always thinking about how these prisms are lighting the areas below on the Valor.
Tumblr media
During my visit I remember thinking that this old surviving whaleship looked quite comfortable and cozy.
Tumblr media
Look at that.
Tumblr media
Such homey little flourishes.
Tumblr media
Look at how cute.
Tumblr media
I’d live here.
That is, until I thought about the reality of this work and world. The fo'c'sle helped bring that reality forward. There wasn't anyone else on the ship and it was a cold spring day, but upon stepping into the space I could feel the humidity that had gathered there.
Tumblr media
I could imagine the noise of it, the smell of it, the heaviness of the air that came with 20 men sharing such a space, eating and smoking in it, crushing cockroaches in it, dumping their wet gear in it, vomiting in it, keeping a communal urine barrel in it, reeking of blood and oil and smoke and ash as everything mouldered in the damp for for three to four years. The dimensions of the fo'c'sle was enough to set my imagination a’going. It was a perfect reference, and for the comic it just needed to be populated.
Tumblr media
For the sake of having somewhat readable panels, my boys are lucky to have been given a much more spacious residence. But still, I try to build out the claustrophobia of the space. And this is just the first night. As time goes on, I’m looking forward to besmirching this place.
Superimposing the reality of a whaler was also necessary in drawing the decks (and will become even more so when I get to the whaling scenes). Now, as a museum, the ship is pristine...
Tumblr media
But I must always remember the description given by a 19th century whaler grumbling that while cutting in a whale, ‘everything is beshit’. Documentary footage as well as photographs, coupled with the words from dead men's journals and one’s own imagination of the hellishness of the work is how I begin to paint the decks of this whaler, especially during the work of cutting in.
(warning for sensitive images below of a lot of blubber)
Tumblr media Tumblr media

Tumblr media
This 1904 image, as described by its photographer Clifford Ashley, 'Rectangular blocks of blubber (lippers) are used to scrape up bits of blubber and slush from the deck so nothing is wasted'. Via NBWM.
Tumblr media
But the place that made me feel the closest sense of reality on the Morgan was the blubber room. The deck prisms didn’t reach here, and in some places the beams were so low I had to duck my head.
Tumblr media
This was where large 15ft sheets of blubber would be dumped below via the hatch, for men to hack them up into smaller 6ft ‘horse pieces’ and then pitch them back up on deck to be further minced. I couldn’t help but think of the movement of the ship in the dark, of the slabs of blubber filling the space, slick with oil. I thought of how much oil would be tracked across the deck and how slippery it’d be, and how a man would have to keep his head cocked to one side for hours to work in there. I thought of how he would get to the fo'c'sle through the blubber room and how the work would be tracked all over the ship and find its way into every bunk. How it would be absolutely inescapable. I thought about the hot sick closeness of having no air down there, the heat from the tryworks radiating mercilessly from above, a crick in your neck, your double-edged boarding knife handle too slick.
Being there and overlaying that work within it was one of the closest times I felt to time travel. And as I try to make the Valor feel alive, to feel real, I always try to capture what I felt here in every panel, and push each one just a little more to get as close as I can to that place.

There he sat
Naked
In the garden of pleasures
Where it's at
In the garden of pleasures
He wore a tinfoil hat
In the garden of pleasures
Dropping bombs like mad
From the garden of pleasures
Like God on his throne
He sat there alone
In the garden of pleasures
They say you can't question it
Or the garden of pleasures
Don't you know you're a hedonist
For wanting what's his
Outside the garden of pleasures
Don't you know you're a witch
If you can't make it into this,
The garden of pleasures
You can't escape the creeping reach
Of the garden of pleasures
Feel free to hate what the preachers teach
Of the garden of pleasures
But you're under the eye in the sky
So do your best not to die
Because the garden of pleasures is grown in blood
And the tillers come with plowshares fashioned out of guns

"Holy cow!" Ruby Rose exclaimed inside the barn.
She traveled to the farm her boyfriend, Oscar Pine, left to join her and their friends in their search for the relics. The two youngest members of the group had been dating for a few months now, and they seemed to be getting along quite well. It was an interesting return for his aunt at the shockingly sudden disappearance of her nephew, only for him to return with a lovely and polite girlfriend.
She wandered the farm, taking in the agricultural spectacle of the Pine farm. She felt a little guilty that she, however unintentional it was, kidnapped the young man, leaving all the chores to his aunt. She entered the barn and was amazed at the massive weapons she found. There were blades twice her size, and claws the could rip a Beringel in half!
"What's going on, Ruby?" Oscar asked as he ran in, panting after sprinting as hard as he could. "Are you okay?"
"Okay?!" Ruby whirled around, a wide smile on her face. "I'm in heaven!"
"Huh?" He watched as Ruby darted around the room, marvelling at the tools on the wall. As he composed himself, he watched as she pulled out a tape measure. "What are you doing?"
"I'm measuring this drill!" She hummed as she extended the tape, then squealed at the measurement. "Four feet long! Just imagine it penetrating a Grimm's thick skull!"
"Uh, Ruby?" The girl was already at another tool, babbling about grinding and tearing, and overall decimating large Grimm with it. "Ruby!"
"Huh?"
"Ruby, these are farming tool." Oscar explained as he walked over to her. "We hook these up to the tractor to do work on the land."
"But that drill-!"
"Is for fence building." He pontificated. "You dig a hole in the ground, then put a fence post inside." He walked over to the next tool, a large frame ending with a wide blade. "This is a box blade. We use this to smooth the roads and get rid of any weeds on our fields before tilling them."
"Tilling?" Ruby asked.
"Yup." Oscar nodded, walking over to the bladed wheel. "We use this to churn the dirt around so the soil is recycled. We can't have any debris, like rocks or stumps, or else the tiller could get broken."
"But what about this claw thing?!" Ruby gestured to the massive talon-like device on the wall. "You gotta use it for Grimm!"
"Nope." Oscar shook his head. "That's a cultivator. You use it to dig up weeds and make plots."
"Aw!" Ruby groaned. "I really wanted to see a mechsuit for fighting Grimm."
"You did, though." Oscar pointed out. "In Argus, when we stole that bullhead."
"Yeah, but..." She sighed. "I guess that'll have to do for now."
"Hey, it's okay, Ruby." He kissed her brow. "You can always build your own."
"Yeah, you're right." She smiled. "Come on, let's get some lunch and talk designs."
"That sounds good to me." Oscar chuckled, walking hand-in-hand with his girlfriend.
Meanwhile, Oscar's aunt snuck inside, and flicked a light switch in a dark corner. The walls dipped from their frame, and were replaced by a wall of weapons, ranging from plasma cannons and lightning claws to rail guns and fire swords. The tractor in the center flipped into the floor, and a mech suit of the same color flipped up in it's place. She smiled before looking back to the unaware couple.
"Some day," she whispered, "this'll all be yers, Ossie."

Ship terminology
I thought I'd take you on a little trip into the world of ship terminology but in summary form.
The word ship itself comes from the Anglo-Saxon scip or the Gothic skip, both meaning boat. But there is also a distinction, because when we say boat we mean a small vessel without decks that is or can be transported on a ship.
At the back is the stern and at the front is the bow with the head, the ship's toilet and the figurehead.
From Greek and Roman antiquity until long after the Grand Armada of 1588, warships carried soldiers accustomed to conducting sieges on land as an offensive force. The soldier on land felt secure in his castle, even though a castle is essentially for defence, and When one went to sea to fight battles, warships had to be equipped with castles. In fact, there were two self-contained castles in each ship, one forward and one aft, known as the forecastle and the aftercastle. From these castles, soldiers fired slingshots, longbows and crossbows. These castles almost disappeared with the advent of muzzle-loading cannons, as the weight was too great. This is almost recognizable in the galleons of the late 16th-early 17th century. Where the forecastle was only one deck high and the aftercastle still quite high. The name forecastle has survived over the years, albeit often in a shortened spelling and always abbreviated in pronunciation, the famous fo'c'sle.

In the course of the 17th century, the afercastle became the quarterdeck, the officers' quarter, on which the wheel was located from 1740. Before that, the whipstaff was located slightly below and not on the maindeck. If there was a cabin on the quarterdeck and a deck above it, it was called the poop deck.
Between the forecastle and the aftercastle was a large area called the waist, which was open until the early 19th century. century, exposing the gun deck below. This gave sailors quicker access to the guns and reduced the ship's weight. From 1805 onwards, it became more and more standard to close the deck and this became a whole upper deck or maindeck, with accesses and vents that were covered with gratings.
Tumblr media
(x)
In between were the gundecks with the great cabin and the wardroom and the berth deck with the gunroom, the places where the guns and crew lived. Under this was the orlop deck, which was an ideal storage area and at the same time a recreation room for some of the ship's crew. Since the deck did not have to be cleared or converted during combat operations, cabins and rooms placed here were permanent and could even be locked. This was also the place where the surgeon could be found.
At the bottom is the hold, the area where the ballast was stored and the barrels with the supplies. On the side of the ship were large square recesses, the gunports, which have existed since the 1520s, from which the guns were fired.

The masts, often three (mizzenmast, mainmast and foremast) from the 16th century onwards, often carried a platform. These were known as tops, which were placed halfway up the masts to provide a point of attachment for various rigging and to serve as a fighting platform; the topmen, the hands that worked at the top, were the most nimble of sailors and were considered the crème de la crème of sailors.
Before the invention of the rudder in the 12th century, a ship was steered with a long oar or sweep fitted over the stern on the right or steer board side of the ship. The Norse were the first to use a single oar; Greek and Roman ships had two steering oars, often connected and controlled by a tiller. It is not known why the Vikings had chosen the starboard side; their choice, however, became universal.
In the course of time the term steerboard changed to starboard; it has no connection at all with stars. It was found awkward to put a ship alongside a jetty on the side this oar was shipped. By preference ships were put alongside starboard side outboard. A plank was put across from shore to ship, and over it stores were embarked. This plank or board was called the ladeboard or loadboard, later larboard. There was doubtless much confusion over the use of the terms larboard and starboard, but after 1580 there was a way out. The French with their high ships' sides devised a shortcut to handling cargo: they cut a loading door or ports its in the ship's  side- known as port side. If you go near the direction towards the back it is aft and towards the front it is foreward.

What is a Handgonne ?
Tumblr media
Author's note: this picture could use a coat of paint..
Handgonnes -from the Middle English word ‘gonne’ and possibly the old Norse 'gunnr’, “war”- were a number of hand-held firearms designs used around the world during the Middle Ages. They appeared in their earliest form in China around the 13th century as a simple barrel at the end of a haft, being an improvement on the earlier fire lance. In that configuration, gonnes are sometimes called tiller guns, and were generally cradled under the user’s arm like a couched lance to be fired.
Tumblr media
These early firearms were often used defensively in European siege warfare by the mid-14th century, and around 1400 some of them became fitted with hooks to put over a city or castle’s wall and absorb recoil. This seemingly minor improvement gave us the German word Hakenbüchse, leading to hackbut and eventually arquebus, a name that then stuck around to designate most hand-held firearms of the Late Middle Ages and Renaissance.
Tumblr media
The final touches to turn these simplistic ‘hook guns’ into early modern arquebuses came from fitting them with crossbow tillers, which later evolved into proper stocks for shouldering the weapon, and then in the last quarter of the 15th century to fit them with triggers for the first time in the form of a serpentine. Handgonnes before were fired by holding a slow match or heated piece of wire to a touch-hole or flashpan at the back of the barrel ; the serpentine lock simply held one such piece of slow match, made of a piece of hemp or flax cord treated with saltpeter, in a mechanism inspired by crossbow triggers.
Tumblr media
This first type of matchlock mechanism was improved upon in the 16th century, possibly by the Portuguese, and turned into the snap matchlock where the serpentine was held in place by spring tension until the trigger was squeezed. From then on arquebuses were slowly refined in shape, size and conformity to equip armies from Europe to Japan and Ethiopia.
Related Vocabulary
couleuvrine: from the French ‘couleuvre’, a type of snake, usually refers to longer bronze guns. Later refers to artillery pieces.
double hackbut: from the German ‘Doppelhaken’, “double hook”, refers to a type of large arquebus fired either from a wall or a small wheeled rest.
touch-hole: the hole in the barrel used to ignite the powder charge within. It is often accompanied by a flash pan, a small pan where priming powder is poured to more easily and reliably fire the gun.
