Timbuktu (1255) Ambient Music

Albumposting time. So today I have Talking Timbuktu by Ali Farka Touré and Ry Cooder. (The album generator credits it to Ali alone, but the Spotify version has "(with Ry Cooder)" appended to the album title and every song, and credits them on the byline of every song AND the album art name drops them on the cover so safe to say they're a relevant part of the creative process here.) Anyway, I enjoyed this even as I understood not one word of it. It's very pretty music. I am deliberately not spouting off more than "it's good, go listen" because beyond whether or not I liked it I don't know shit about this music, or what influenced it or what it influenced. Wikipedia says it's "Malian folk" so I'm assuming it's from Mali, but even that could be wrong because when you click on the genre on Wikipedia it just takes you to "World music."
Anyway, I've derailed a bit. It's good. Go listen. You'll like it. Be nice to yourself and your ears and listen. 4/5

Tumblr's favorite animated movie!
Tumblr media
Vote in the other polls! What fans say:
The Book of Life:
It's a day of the dead movie that came out a few years before Coco and crafts a simple yet elegant story about God, love, adventure and facing your family's scorn for the right to be yourself. The protagonist Manolo is by the creator's own admission a sort of self portrait, and Manolo going against his father's dreams of him becoming a bullfighter while Manolo wants to go into music are reflective of the creator's own tension with his father over being an artist. It's a very Mexican film in that Jorge Gutierrez, the director, specifically informed his creative team to not do one of those 'touristy research trips' and to instead ask him or the other Mexican staff members about cultural things. Also it's so fucking beautiful like look at it. There's this part where the Manolo is facing his greatest fear, the epitome of his family legacy staring him down, and for a moment nearly gives in to the pressures of his family name but chooses mercy instead of violence and saves the bull he was pressured to kill. Apologizing to it for all the pain his ancestors put its kind through for the sake of their bloody sport and in his mercy wins a chance at coming back to life.
It's an amazing film, from the beautiful artwork and animation, to the casting, to the overall plot. My favorite scene is probably when La Muerte yells "You misbegotten son of a leprous donkey!"
The Aristocats:
Jazz musician cats.
Great art/animation, great characters, great music, a great story. The kittens! Roquefort the mouse! The romance between Duchess and Thomas O'Malley. She -- an elegant purebred cat -- doesn't care that he's a scruffy stray. He -- after being briefly taken aback -- doesn't care that she already has three kittens who need looking after. The butler Edgar is one of the scariest kinds of villains, because no one knew he was one at first, and even when the cats knew it, he still had the trust of his mistress. Truly someone who deserved to be shipped off in a crate to Timbuktu. And the cats, man, O'Malley's jazz-loving friends. EVERYBODY *dances* EVERYBODY *blows trombone* EVERYBODY WANTS TO BE A CAT! *Goes to town on the piano*

In a statement published the same week as the first Melodifestivalen semi-final, more than 1000 Swedish artists ask the EBU to exclude Israel from this year's Eurovision Song Contest, including 2 acts participating in this year's edition of melfest: Jacqline, and both members of Medina. Also among the signatures are former melfest participants Johan Hirvi (Panetoz) and Alvaro Estrella, as well as former winners Eric Saade and Malena Ernman.
Some other notable signatures belong to Robyn, First Aid Kit, Eagle-Eye Cherry, Petra Marklund (also known as September), The Wannadies, Thomas Stenström, Miriam Bryant, Sabina Ddumba, Daniel Adams-Ray, Timbuktu, Kaliffa and many others whose names I recognise but I'm too unfamiliar with the contemporary music scene to know their work.
Below is my translation of some parts of their statement, as well as sources:
Note: The bold parts are also bold in the original statement. I have tried to use the same terminology as the statement, but I'm no expert, so be aware that there can be some mistakes.
The first link includes the full statement in Swedish as well as a list of all the signatures:
[...] What is happening in Gaza is a humanitarian disaster and the International Court of Justice in The Hague has recently decided to continue the case where Israel is accused of crimes against the Genocide Convention. Despite this the European radio- and TV-union the EBU intends to allow Israel's participation in the Eurovision Song Contest 2024. The EBU grounds its position on Eurovision being a competition between public service companies rather than states. But in 2022 the EBU chose to exclude Russia by reason of the invasion of Ukraine, and in 2021 the participating broadcaster from Belarus was denied participation because the country broke the EBU's rules for the freedom of the press. In barely four months about 100 Palestinian journalists have been killed, and foreign press has been denied access to Gaza. It is one of the greatest attacks on journalistic freedom in modern times. We are of the opinion that the EBU by allowing Israel's participation displays a remarkable double-standard that undermines the credibility of the organisation. [...] We expect both the EBU and this year's host broadcaster SVT to be consistent in their approach towards participating countries that infringe on democratic values and human rights.
[...] We who sign this are 1000 artists who believe in music as a unifying force. The Eurovision Song Contest began as a peace project to unite countries and citizens through music. To allow Israel's participation undermines not just the competition's spiritual intent but the entire public service mission. It also sends the signal that governments can commit war crimes without facing consequences. That is why we ask the EBU: Exclude Israel from the Eurovision Song Contest 2024.

Also: there should definitely be a school of magic in Timbuktu. And Benin. And Egypt. Why only Uagadou?
There must have been some type of shitty after taste from imperialism and lot of the Ancient schools just decided not to be involved with the Western Wizarding world.
I bet the Western magic is so different from African magic that the Western schools of witchcraft don’t even recognize the African school of magic as real magic. And the magic would be different in different parts of Africa.
in West Africa There would be a lot more nature bound rituals, music and collaboration with the ancestral spirits and communal magic. The spells would involve long incantations based in ancient African languages done in sacred ritual places and there would be less emphasis on face to face duels and other brutal methods of the whites. There would be no use of fragile magic wands. The magic would be tied to an objects like a pot filled with magical items hidden in ground and the object would be dug out and used to perform powerful magic in secret gatherings. The magic would be communal and would depend to be produced as a group and not an individual effort. There would also be significantly more animagi and no requirement to be registered, much to the annoyance of the Europeans.
So Uagadou was probably just the most European complying and adopted more of their techniques and was included in the list of officially recognized schools as they fit the European idea of what magic is and what a school of magic is.
Just my thinking. I would love someone to develop this idea. I’m feeling sort of not allowed to go very far with this on my own as I’m not African and am very bloody white myself. I have however lived in Ghana for a decade and married to Ghanian for 16 years and I feel pretty integrated and maybe this is why I feel so drawn to the idea of African schools of witchcraft. Maybe as something my kids could relate to.

Eartha Mae Kitt (January 17, 1927 – December 25, 2008) died 18 years ago today at the age of 81. Her singing style and her 1953 recordings of "C'est Si Bon" and the enduring Christmas novelty smash "Santa Baby", which were both US Top 10 hits. Orson Welles once called her the "most exciting woman in the world". Kitt began her career in 1943 with the Katherine Dunham Company and appeared in the 1945 original Broadway production of the musical Carib Song. In the early 1950s, she had six US Top 30 hits, including "Uska Dara" and "I Want to be Evil". Her other notable recordings include the UK Top 10 hit "Under the Bridges of Paris" (1954), "Just an Old Fashioned Girl" (1963) and "Where Is My Man" (1983). She took over the role of Catwoman in 1967 for the third and final season of the Batman television series, replacing Julie Newmar. In 1968, her career in America suffered after she made anti-war statements at a White House luncheon. Ten years later, she made a successful return to Broadway in the 1978 original production of the musical Timbuktu!, for which she received the first of her two Tony Award nominations. Her second was for the 2000 original production of the musical The Wild Party.
She voiced Yzma in both the 2000 animated film The Emperor's New Groove and the 2006–08 TV series The Emperor's New School, winning two Emmy Awards, the second shortly before her death. Kitt won a third Emmy posthumously in 2010 for The Wonder Pets.

People I wanna know better tag meme
Thanks for the tag @uncontrol-freak :)
Last song?
youtube
...there's something special in listening to a song specifically when it's accompanied by a meme. no, I did not play the game. no I never listened to the song before
Before that was Silent Hill 2 "Promise", "All I want for Christmas is you but there is a metal pipe sound effect on every chord change", a 3-hour long ambience of Amnesia: The Bunker's Safe Room and a mash-up of MGR's "Red Sun" with Lady Gaga's "Paparazzi"
I have diverse music tastes
Favorite color?
Yellow, all kinds of yellow! Soft purple, deep black in second places (non-binary flag lol)
Currently watching?
Metal Gear Rising memes by L Void. History videos (about Timbuktu, punitive psychiatry in USSR, the cult of Isis, for example). Oh, and Frieren, and just binged Dungeon Meshi manga (wasn't terribly impressed by the anime, but the memes drew me in, and oh boy was it worth it)
Last movie?
Hmmmm, I barely watch movies honestly. Midsommar, back when I gave several horror movies a go somewhere in early autumn?..
I enjoyed it, the camerawork and framing are incredible, musical tone is surreal and it's quite tasteful in presenting its violence, and the story is provocative in an interesting way. I'm not sure about my judgement given how little experience with movies and horror movies I have, but it was an interesting experience for me.
Sweet/Spicy/Savory?
Spicy!
First comes to mind because I love spicy cocoa, but...
..but also can I have everything please I love food I love having taste buds
Relationship status?
"Izutsumi by herself"
Tumblr media
I'm ace and probably aro, so not even sure how to apply that question to myself. Open to collecting more humans :)
Current obsessions?
Amnesia: The Bunker. I can't stop thinking about the knuckle-walking monster with broken silhouette lines, about the lighting choices, about how good BARRELS feel to tilt and shove, and how the game gives you so many sensible instruments (running, revolver, door locks) and then goes "well, about that..."
Last thing you googled?
Khazarian Khaganate. I wanted to show a friend a map of Khazarian Khaganate to visually illustrate a spontaneuos history lesson about the Pan-Eurasian Steppe and the fall of Kyivan Rus.
Selfie or another pic you took?
Tumblr media
I don't do many selfies, I don't look good on my phone's camera. I have this self-portrait from spring of the last year though! My hair is even longer now, heh
...
Tagging @sabbitabbi, @onkazhaba, @ggauroras, @nylmoth, @beachboogeyman - if you want, of course :)

Hello! For the get-to-know me ask: orchid and cactus!
Orchid ⇢ A song that is perfect
Okay this one is harder than I thought. Sorry for asking you about this one 😅
There are a lot of songs that mean the world to me. I could give you an entire list of songs that fit perfectly depending on the mood. Music is a lifesaver. One that’s constantly on repeat right now is Mercy Mirror by Within Temptation. Most of their songs are strong candidates tbh. Flickan och Kråkan by Timbuktu is a Swedish one that’s amazing. There’s a story behind it sort of, but listening to the song is a journey that goes from the fuck? to okay this is actually sad to ouch. That hurt. It’s also one of those vivid childhood memories for me.
But there’s a German one called Dämonen by CÉLINE. While it’s partly due to other things associated with it, the lyrics is so painfully perfect that I cannot listen to it without it sending me into a depressive episode that lasts for hours. So yeah. Perfect but destructive? Not sure it was the point of the question but whatever. (This whole question ended up being way more depressing than intended. Sorry!)
Cactus ⇢ something you’re currently learning (about)?
I’m currently doing my bachelor in Physics, so I’m learning a lot of things all the time. Multivariable calculus is by far the best course right now.
At this very moment I’m (when I’m not procrastinating by being on tumblr that is) studying for my terrifyingly massive exam in rigid body mechanics and also running simulations on exoplanets. Aka learning how to trick the computer into accepting my code and do what I’m asking it to.
Studies aside, I’m finally learning shibari properly! I’ve been a bunny for a while but I’ve gotten the chance to try some more advanced tying lately and it has been great!

A Simple Favor
Steve Rogers/Fem!Reader
Fictober Day 6 of 31
Words: 2,004
Summary: When the neighbor you can't stand crashes your night out and asks for your help, you end up making a bargain that leads to a whole lot more.
Note: this is my contribution to @saiyanprincessswanie‘s 3.5k follower writing challenge!! congratulations missy and i hope you enjoy this :)
Steve Rogers Masterlist
Tumblr media
The sound of your name cut through the thumping music and loud voices of the bar, and you turned to see who was trying to get your attention. “What are you doing here?” you asked, your voice showing the annoyance you felt after realizing who it was that had interrupted you.
“I have a proposition,” Steve Rogers said, and you had to fight the urge to roll your eyes right then and there. It was bad enough that you had to live next door to him, but now he had to appear when you were trying to enjoy yourself on a night off too?
“If it involves anything other than you leaving me alone for the rest of the night, I don’t want to hear it.”
“I want you to kiss me.”
“What?” you had to stop yourself from throwing your drink on him right there, because you’ve never gotten along, and now he wants you to kiss him? The only reason you didn’t give his shirt a Malibu bay breeze makeover is because you paid good money for this drink, and it was actually pretty good for a bar you had never gone to before. “I think I just heard you wrong.”
“I said I want you to kiss me.”
“Okay, so I’m not crazy then,” you said. “And why exactly would I ever do that?”
He sighed as he sat down next to you at the bar, flagging down the bartender and ordering another drink. “Because my stupid friends are playing truth or dare in our booth and they dared me to go up to someone, kiss them, and get their number.”
“Uh-huh,” you said, still not totally convinced he was telling the truth. “And so you saw me, the neighbor you’ve never gotten along with, and thought ‘oh yeah, she’ll totally go along with my stupid plan!’ Are you actually an idiot? Or is there something in it for you that I don’t know about?”
“Whoever wins, or the last person standing really, doesn’t have to pay for any of their drinks for the entire night. And it’s just between me and one other person right now. If you kiss me, I win.”
Yeah, that made sense. This was a pretty pricey bar compared to others nearby, and it was an enticing enough prize that Steve would try to win by any means necessary, even if it meant dragging you into it. “If I kiss you right now, what’s in it for me?”
“Excuse me?”
“Come on Rogers, you think I’m going to do this out of the kindness of my own heart? After all the insults we’ve traded over the years, I deserve a medal if my lips are going anywhere near yours, but I’ll settle for something else.”
“What do you want?”
You were silent for a moment, trying to think of something that would be worth the horror of kissing him. It wasn’t that he wasn’t attractive, it was actually unfair how good-looking he was, but for whatever reason, the two of you have just never gotten along. “I want the good parking spot. Permanently.”
He snorted in response. “Absolutely not. I’m not parking in timbuktu just for one kiss.”
“Then I guess you’ll be buying all your drinks tonight then,” you said, starting to turn away from him and back towards the wall behind the bar.
“Wait,” he said, and it was then that you realized how truly desperate he must be, making you wonder just how competitive these friends of his must be. “You can have the good parking spot for one month.”
“You think I’m that stupid?” you asked, eyebrows raised. “I want assurance that you won’t park there for three months, minimum.”
“Two months and you have a deal.”
You made a show of pretending to think it over, but in reality you were ready to accept. With the way your apartments were set up, the parking spots that you and Steve had for your two units were split up: one of them in the best area of the parking garage, and the other wedged in the back corner and between two spots that almost always had giant pickup trucks parked in them. Even if you weren’t getting the good spot permanently, a few seconds of kissing him was a pretty good price to pay for two months assurance that you won’t have to fight him for the spot. “Deal,” you eventually said. “So how do I have to sell this with you?”
“Thankfully, we’re far enough away that none of my friends have heard our little bargain, but-”
A voice cut through the conversation, clearly being shouted from one of the tables towards the back of the bar. “Come on Steve, we don’t have all day! Just kiss already!”
If you didn’t already know about the game his friends were playing and you were just someone he had approached in a bar, you probably would have thrown your drink all over him and left in a huff. But right now, with the promise of something you wanted so badly just within your reach, you decided to just swallow your pride for a few moments.
Making a show of looking back towards the table of his friends and smiling, you pulled Steve down by the collar of his shirt and pulled him into a passionate kiss.
His lips were unfairly soft and the way his hands moved to your waist made you rethink all your life choices for a moment, but soon you both pulled away, with the whoops and cheers from halfway across the room a testament to the fact that Steve had pulled off his little charade. You didn’t know what to say, what was there to say at this point?
After you made a show of writing down your number on a napkin for him, Steve didn’t seem to keen on idly chatting any longer. “Thanks,” he said, picking up his glass of beer and getting up (presumably to go back to where his friends were sitting). “Enjoy your parking spot for the next two months.”
***
After your strange encounter with him in the bar, you barely saw Steve for weeks. You would have been completely convinced that you had dreamed the entire situation up, but he kept to his word, and every time you pulled back into the parking garage after work, the good spot was still open.
You wanted to talk to him, mainly to extend an olive branch and see if he’d be willing to be civil with you permanently. Because you couldn’t stop thinking about the feeling of his lips on your for days after it happened, and you didn’t want to fight with him anymore. You had half a mind to knock on his door after two weeks of this radio silence, because it felt strange to not talk about what happened in the bar. It was understandable that he wouldn’t want to take things any further (after all, before this the two of you had never gotten along), but to just disappear without even a conversation about what had gone on seemed unlike him.
By the time you were nearing the end of your two month stint with the good parking space, you knew it had to be purposeful avoidance on his part. Your prize would be over soon, so why hadn’t he knocked on your door with a snide remark to remind you that it wouldn’t last forever, or even try to set up a schedule where you could both share the spot equally? Was he just going to continue to park halfway across the garage just because he didn’t want to talk to you, were you really that bad of a kisser?
You started to look for him, trying to pluck up enough courage to knock on his door and ask him what the hell was going on. And eventually, the day before your two months would be up, you finally did it.
“What do you want?” he asked as soon as he pulled the door open, a confused expression on his face.
“We need to talk,” you said shortly, trying not to inadvertently escalate the conversation (you were trying to extend an olive branch after all). “Can I come in, or do you want to talk in my apartment?”
He didn’t shut the door in your face, so you took that as a good sign as he stepped aside and allowed you to step into his apartment. The floor plan was the exact same setup as your own place, but it seemed less lively than yours, with only a few personal touches and still-bare walls. Barely a month after you moved in you already had decorations and personal trinkets out everywhere, and Steve had lived here for over two years. “What is it that you want to talk about?” he said as the two of you sat on the couch. The only other time you’d been this close to him before was when you were at the bar, and your brain stopped working for a moment as you flashed back to the kiss.
“You know what we need to talk about,” you said. “The bar, two months ago.”
“Why?” he asked. “You made it perfectly clear that what happened there was an arrangement for both of us to get what we wanted, and I’ve moved past it.”
“Have you though?” you asked, not able to stop the way your voice rose a tiny bit.
“Why wouldn’t I have?”
“Steve, I haven’t seen you since then,” you said. “I know we weren’t best friends before but every once in a while I’d see you leaving while I’m coming back from the store, or we’d get home around the same time from work. Now, it’s like I’m living next to a ghost, and I’m trying to figure out what’s changed!”
“Nothing changed,” he said, but there was a slight bitterness to his voice. “I thought you would have enjoyed not seeing me ever again.”
Your mouth dropped open at his muttered insult. “You’re ridiculous, you know that?” you asked, fuming. “You’re the one who approached me in that bar, not the other way around, and you have the audacity to imply that this is somehow my doing. I get it, you probably hated kissing me, but you got free drinks all night and I got the good parking spot for a little while, I thought it was a fair trade! And now I’m trying to extend an olive branch so we could maybe share the parking spot equally but you won’t even listen to me!”
Silence. He just stared at you with his mouth slightly agape, and you were trying to figure out what the hell he didn’t understand. “I didn’t hate it,” he eventually said, so quiet that you almost couldn’t make it out.
“What?”
“I didn’t hate kissing you.”
“Oh, real funny joke mister,” you said, rolling your eyes. “Because normal people would have just talked about-”
But you didn’t get to finish that sentence, because he had grabbed your face and pressed his lips to yours. His hands eventually moved down to your waist and pulled you closer to him on the couch, your mouths still connected. This kiss was needier than the one at the bar, and you’d be lying if you said you didn’t kiss him back with all you had.
When you finally broke apart, his lips were slightly swollen and you were sure yours were too. “I thought you hated me,” he said. “So I wasn’t going to bother acting on my feelings if you were just going to shoot me down.”
“I never hated you,” you said. “You irritated me yes, but I didn’t hate you.”
He leaned in closer, lips barely inches away from yours. “Well then, I think we have a lot of lost time to make up.”
“Just shut up and kiss me Rogers.”
He laughed as his lips met yours once more.

Al Bilali Soudan - Tiny Desk (Home) Concert (2021)
The family members of Al Bilali Soudan, from Timbuktu, Mali, are sought-after musicians and griots. Led by Abellow Yattara, the band is a torch-bearer of quintessentially Tamasheq (or Tuareg) music, shaped by a continuous exchange between the tehardent (lute), vocals and hand percussion. The words sung are similarly percussive, like an instrument themselves. This genre of music has been performed for half a millennium by Tuareg griots to celebrate the end of harvest and the changing seasons, heroic warriors and noble families. --The globalFEST staff

public enemy: “oh, my god, these guys are so old but so hecking cool like this fucks harder than anything that came out the last 5 years, like i was grooving along almost immediately. chuck also looks great and didn’t break out a sweat…? (flav meanwhile was sweating buckets by the end of it)”
foo fighters: “AAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHH so emotional!! dave is being affected by the desert air big time but he’s pulling so hard?? and josh is a madman!”
30 seconds to mars: “…way better than i thought they would be? also brought me back to middle school and even though that was an immensely awful period for me, i feel nostalgia for the music of that era. also, did some reading, y’all seriously need to chill about jared leto, i mean, the man was in american psycho and fight club for god’s sake. another victim of the arid climate but he and his brother go hard, though.”
kelly clarkson: “knew she was a great singer but DAMN. she’s one of those forgotten gems from the 2000s, kids: those who have an air of blues and melancholy to them, like she was the first american idol for a reason. also, i was today years old when i learned she has a talk show.”
fall out boy: “oh, more nostalgiaaaaaaaaaAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHH HOLY MOTHERFUCKING SHIT BALLS YOU CAN FEEL THE POWER AND THE FIRE! …LITERALLY!”
travis scott: “…um… did… did i get into the wrong festival or something? this is the guy at the helm of the astrodome fiasco? like the previous five zerg rushed it from here to timbuktu but i was falling asleep about a minute into it (my mom dead-ass thought he was a country singer 😅)”
