Today in “excerpts from one-shots that’ll probably end up in the Great GoogleDrive Cemetery”, we have this (or, as I described it on twitter, “what do we do when we’re sad? WORLDBUILD” 😆):
Last year I fell HARD back into One Piece after taking a break from it for like... 15 years... 😬 And ever since I started back up ZoSan has infiltrated my brain and I can think of little else. So enjoy the outcomes of that.
Some interesting connections between The Mask and Mortal Kombat (1995).
Now, these movies are definitely different. One is a Comedy, and the other is a Martial Arts Action flick.
However, I did manage to find some similarities and things that kinda connect the two together.
The most obvious is that both were released by New Line Cinema in the mid 90s (1994-95, to be exact).
Both are also PG-13 rated movies based on dark and gory comic books and video games.
The two movies also have the same cinematographer (John R. Leonetti), costume designer (Ha Nguyen), and casting directors (Fern Champion and Mark Paladini). Bob Engelman was a producer on The Mask, and an executive producer on MK.
A minor detail, but both run around the same time length (1 hour and 41 minutes).
Cameron Diaz, who portrays Tina Carlyle in The Mask (her film debut as well), was the original frontrunner for Sonya Blade in MK, but after she broke her wrist during Martial Arts training, she was replaced by Bridgette Wilson-Sampras.
Both movies were huge hits for New Line, and went on to be fan favorites for those who are fans of Jim Carrey and the MK franchise. They were also followed by terrible sequels with very few of the original cast and crew members (Son of the Mask and Mortal Kombat: Annihilation).
In 2021, they made sort of comebacks to film with a reboot of Mortal Kombat, and The Mask having a cameo in Space Jam: A New Legacy. Both films were released both in theaters and on HBO Max simultaneously.
The Mask is also a highly suggested guest fighter for a future Mortal Kombat game due to his gory roots among other things.

This news is just out: Daniel is executive producer of a new documentary called David Holmes: The Boy Who Lived about the extraordinary story of his stunt double, David Holmes who worked with him on Harry Potter. Produced by HBO Documentary Film in association with Sky, a Lightbox / Ripple Production.
It's coming to on demand on HBO on 15th November, and will be available to stream on Max, (US) and on Sky Documentaries and streaming service NOW on 18th November (UK).
The world premiere takes place at DOC:NYC Festival on 13th November. The first screening will be followed by a Q&A with filmmakers and special guests.
Synopsis:
The film is a coming-of-age story of stuntman David Holmes, a prodigious teenage gymnast from Essex, England, who is selected to play Daniel Radcliffe’s stunt double in the first Harry Potter film, when Daniel is just eleven. Over the next ten years, the two form an inextricable bond, but on the penultimate film a tragic accident on set leaves David paralysed with a debilitating spinal injury, turning his world upside down. As Daniel and his closest stunt colleagues rally to support David and his family in their moment of need, it is David’s extraordinary spirit of resilience that becomes their greatest source of strength and inspiration.
Featuring candid personal footage shot over the last decade, behind-the-scenes material from Holmes’ stunt work, scenes of his current life and intimate interviews with David, Daniel Radcliffe, friends, family, and former crew, the film also reflects universal themes of living with adversity, growing up, forging identities in an uncertain world, and the bonds that bind us together and lift us up.
