Nigeria's President Bola Tinubu has squarely rejected the idea of paying any ransom for the release of more than 280 schoolchildren who were abducted last week. Tinubu specified that "not a dime" would be spent to meet the kidnappers' demands, after the payment of ransom was made illegal in Nigeria in 2022.
Authorities may be running out of time to secure the release of the hostages in northwestern Kaduna state, as the kidnapping gangs have vowed to kill the captives if their demands are not met.
The kidnappers have asked for the equivalent of over $620,000 (about €570,000) for the release of the students and school staff — in addition to 11 Toyota Hilux pickup vehicles and 150 motorcycles.
The abductions, which took place in the town of Kuriga on March 7, are the first major kidnappings to take place in Nigeria since 2021. However, gunmen have been operating in the region for several years. Known locally as bandits, they frequently abduct individual locals, especially pupils, to demand ransom payments.
President Tinubu also stressed that the military must step in to ensure the release of the victims, according to Nigeria's Information Minister Mohammed Idris.
"The president has directed that security agencies must as a matter of urgency ensure that these children and all those who have been kidnapped are brought back to safety," Idris told reporters on Wednesday.
Kaduna Governor Uba Sani added that all authorities were "doing everything possible to ensure the safe return of the pupils and students."
Islamist militants, bandits behind kidnapping surge
This recent surge in abductions has become a growing challenge for Nigeria's embattled government. Earlier in the week, some 60 people were also abducted from another village in Kaduna state.
In the past 10 days alone, close to 400 people have been kidnapped for ransom, including 15 other students.
"We see that there are two actors [behind the kidnappings]: one are Islamist militants and then the [other are] bandit groups who have been prescribed as terrorists by the Nigerian government," security expert Ryan Cummings told DW.
Cummings, the director of Signal Risk, a security analysis organization with a focus on the African continent, added that while for the Islamists, "there are some political considerations they demand in exchange for the release of hostages, such as the release of some of their own captured militants," the local bandits operating primarily in northwestern and north-central Nigeria chiefly appear to be motivated by money and secondly by protecting their territorial interests.
"[The bandits] tend to demand financial concessions, but they also use hostages in some of their camps as the means of preventing the Nigerian military from conducting air raids on their positions, for example.
"So obviously they are using civilians as human shield," he said.
Are kidnappers 'ready for negotiation'?
Some attempts are nevertheless being made to negotiate between the government and the criminal gangs. Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, a respected Islamic cleric with a strong military background, has offered to mitigate between the two camps — but there's little hope of success.
Such an intervention, however, would be difficult as the kidnappers seem to become bolder with increasingly excessive ransom demands, said Aliyu Othman, a Nigerian media analyst and journalist.
"The issue of negotiating with bandits will in a lot of the cases not bring about peace. Sheikh Gumi has been offering that opportunity since the period of [Muhammadu] Buhari as the president of Nigeria," Othman told DW.
"Are the kidnappers, the bandits, ready for negotiation or settlement? That is what is important here."
'All we have tried so far has not worked out'
While officials remain resolute in not entering into negotiations with the kidnappers, some Nigerians believe Tinubu's government must keep an open mind in dealing with the crisis.
DW took to the streets of Abuja to ask locals their views. A female resident said she believed the government had to do more to ensure the safety of families who were exposed to the activities of bandits across the country.
"We wake up to a fresh story of a kidnappings every day, when you least expect it. And the sad thing is that now the vulnerable are the victims, like children, women and entire families," she said.
A mother from Abuja, meanwhile, responded that something needs "to be done because all we have tried so far has not worked out. All the security measures that were put in place by the government have failed."
A male resident of Abuja told DW that the government needed more resources to tackle the crisis.
"The attacks are rampant all over. […] If we begin to ask ourselves how many security personnel we have on the ground and how well have they been taken care of, we might get somewhere. So I am appealing to the government to buy the latest technology to track down these criminals because that is the only way forward," he said.
Corruption hindering efforts to fight abduction crisis
Security analyst Cummings agreed that Nigerian authorities have to step up their efforts to stop the kidnappings.
"The Nigerian government will firstly have to enhance the resources available to state security personnel and properly train specialized units that are engaged in anti-kidnapping operations. But most members of the security forces are too inadequately resourced [to begin with], they lack ammunition and food provisions and other resources, too," he said.
Cummings said that while the tools necessary to fight terrorists and kidnappers were in sore demand across the region, corruption within the security services was also contributing to the derailing of efforts to end the crisis.
"The state is not in the position to provide additional resources. This needs to change. There needs to be a shift in strategy."

Fifty Years, A Million Dreams: My Life as a Nigerian American
Let me take you back to a pivotal moment in my journey: March 20, 1974. Picture a teenage Nigerian, standing with a mix of hope and anxiety outside the Embassy of the United States of America in Lagos. That teenager was me, about to face a visa interview that could change the course of my life.
I remember the small talk with about 20 other visa interviewees, the nervous energy in the air, and the warning from one of them: "You'll be back ten times before you get a visa." But inside me, there was a flicker of hope, a belief that today might just be my day.
The interview itself was brief—just five minutes and five questions. What stood out were not the questions themselves but the items I presented: an academic scholarship to Oregon backed by correspondence test scores from Britain and the United States, reflecting my journey as a self-taught and independent student. My education was unconventional, a testament to the resilience and resourcefulness that each of you possess in abundance.
When the interviewer, Mr. Glasl, examined my documents and finally said, "Congratulations," I was overwhelmed. His American accent made it hard to understand his words, but the meaning was clear when I walked out holding a colored card—a symbol that my F-1 student visa would be stamped. The disbelief in the eyes of the other interviewees was a mirror of my own.
As I left the embassy, holding that precious card, I felt a whirlwind of emotions. Confusion, excitement, and a sense of achievement. I remember thinking, "What next?" It felt like I had been chasing a dream, much like a dog chasing a pickup truck, and suddenly, I was on board, wondering what to do.
I got into a taxi, and in pidgin English, the driver asked, "Were you dey go?" In that moment of uncertainty, I blurted out "Tinubu Square," a place symbolic of our nation's heart and history. It was a moment of transition, from dreams to reality, from aspirations to achievements.
My journey from that day led me to make contributions to computer science. But more importantly, it taught me that no matter where you come from, no matter the odds stacked against you, your dreams are valid, and your potential is limitless.
So, to each one of you, I say: dream big, work hard, and never give up. Your journey might be filled with challenges, but remember, it is these challenges that forge the strongest steel. You are the future of this great nation, and I do not doubt that you will rise to shape a world that is brighter, better, and more beautiful than we can even imagine.
Thank you.

Why I renamed Minna Airport after Tinubu — Niger gov
Tumblr media
The Niger State Governor, Mohammed Bago, has explained why he renamed the Abubakar Imam International Airport after President Bola Tinubu. He said the renaming was prompted by the desire to ensure a square peg is placed in a square hole, noting that naming the State Polytechnic Zungeru, after the late literary icon, Abubakar Imam was more appropriate. He added that the president approved the decision. Bago, in a last-minute decision, changed the name of the airport which was named after Imam in June last year to Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Airport, following its commissioning on Monday. The governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Bologi Ibrahim made this known on Tuesday in a statement quoting Bago as announcing the development while granting a live interview on TVC News at 10 on Monday. In a move to assuage the feelings of Niger citizens, the Governor named the State Polytechnic Zungeru, after the late literary icon, Abubakar Imam, saying, “It is a square peg in a square hole”. Bago who explained the naming of the Polytechnic after Imam said the action was “simply to put a square peg in a square hole”. Ibrahim noted that the Governor recounted the significant contributions of the famous Hausa author to not only the State but the country at large particularly northern Nigeria, pointing out that naming academic institutions after the Literary Icon was the best. Speaking on the renaming of the Airport after Bola Ahmed Tinubu, less than a year after it was named the Abubakar Imam Kagara International Airport, Bago said, “It is in appreciation of the President, for approving the State to establish the first special Airport Agro-Processing Free Zone in Nigeria and his immense contributions to nation building. “The State Government under my leadership has been enjoying tremendous support from the Tinubu-led government and the President is an astute politician and a great leader that should be celebrated”. The Governor disclosed that the renaming of the Airport was done after consultations with relevant stakeholders including the State Executive Council members and after getting the approval of the President. By • Olalekan Fagbade BREAKING; Federal Government revokes 1,633 mining Licenses, warns illegal miners The Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dr Dele Alake, on Tuesday announced revocation of 1,633 mining titles for defaulting on payment of annual service fees. Alake made this known at a news conference in Abuja on Tuesday. According to him, in compliance with the law, the Mining Cadastral Office (MCO) on Oct. 4, began the process of revoking 2,213 titles. “These included 795 exploration titles, 956 small scale mining licences, 364 quarry licences and 98 mining leases. “These were published in the Federal Government Gazette Number 178, Volume 110 of Oct. 10 with the notice of revocation for defaulting in the payment of annual service fee. “The mandatory 30 days expired on Nov. 10. Only 580 title holders responded by settling their indebtedness. “With this development, the MCO recommended the revocation of 1, 633 mineral titles as follows: Exploration Licence, 536; Quarry Licence, 279; Small Scale Mining Licence, 787 and Mining Lease, 31. “In line with the powers conferred on me by the NMMA 2007, Section 5 (a), I have approved the revocation of the 1,633 titles,” the minister said. He said that the titles would be reallocated to more serious investors. He warned the previous holders of the titles to leave the relevant cadaster with immediate effect. He said that security agencies would work with the mines inspectorate of the ministry to apprehend any defaulter found on any of the areas where titles had been revoked. “We have no doubt in our mind that the noble goals of President Bola Tinubu to sanitise the solid minerals sector and position the industry for international competitiveness are alive and active. “We appeal to all stakeholders for their co-operation in achieving these patriotic objectives and encourage those who have done business in this sector the wrong way to turn a new leaf. “Ultimately, the Nigerian people shall be the winners,” he said. According to Alake, It is indeed very unconscionable for corporate bodies making huge profits from mining to refuse to give the government its due by failing to pay their annual service fee. “It is indeed a reasonable conjecture that such a company will even be more unwilling to pay royalties and honour its tax obligations to the government. “The amount the companies are being asked to pay is peanut compared to their own revenue projections. ” For example, the holder of an exploration title pays only N1,500 per cadastral unit not exceeding 200 units. Those holding titles covering more than 200 units pay N2,000 per unit, In short, the larger the area your title covers, the more you pay. “This principle was applied to ensure that applicants do not hold more than they require to explore. “With a cadastral unit captured as a square of 500 metres by 500 metres, any law-abiding title holder should not hesitate to perform its obligations,” he said. The minister said that every sector required a governance system that regulated the conduct of its participants, the procedures for entry and exit, the obligations of the government to participants and the penalties for non-compliance. He said that the philosophy of the Nigerian Minerals and Mining Act 2007 was to establish a rational system of administering titles transparently and comprehensively to ensure a seamless transition from reconnaissance to exploration and from exploration to mineral extraction. “The principal agency for the administration of titles is the MCO, which receives applications, evaluates them, and issues titles with the approval of the office of minister of solid minerals development. “Although the MCO has tried to improve its efficiency by adopting new application administration technology, it continues to face challenges in monitoring the compliance of title holders,” he said. He warned illegal miners to desist from their illegal activities as their “days were numbered ”. (NAN)
