okay, I have to ask — how do you like your kobo ereader??
I’ve been eyeing one for a while bc I really *don’t* want a kindle, but also *so* many people have a kindle that it feels like it’s the only real option
Holy crap I LOVE IT. It's so much better than the Kindle. (Also: this got long)
I decided to upgrade my old Paperwhite (it was a second gen, so pretty old and small) and I almost got a new Paperwhite automatically (cause I felt much the same as you).
But the Kobos were on the same page and since I'm trying to be less impulsive, I started poking around and they are so good.
I went with a black Libra 2 and it's like the software was actually designed for human beings, unlike the Kindle software, which I think was designed for no one except the devil.
I side-load only and keep all my books organised in collections. The only way to do collections on the Kindle is manually, one book at a time, or jailbreak (and I'm not sure you can jailbreak the new Paperwhites, plus it's such a PITA).
On the Kobo, I can build collections from within Calibre, super fast and multiple books at a time. You can also do them manually on the Kobo, but even that is SO MUCH EASIER than on the Kindle.
The actual screen reading experience is basically identical (you can even side-load the Kindle font if you want it), since e-ink is pretty much e-ink, but it has few extra 'while you're reading' tweaks, like setting the all around margin size of the book (great if you switch between books and comics) and controlling the presence of, and info in, the top and bottom bar (pages left in book, pages left in chapter, percentage left to go etc). It also has a brightness and a warmness setting, so you can tweak those til they're just right for you.
I'm loving the physical page turn buttons so much - way easier than having to swipe the screen. I can hold the Kobo in one hand and just page forward with my thumb. It's also a teeny tiny bit lighter than my old Paperwhite.
I also love that you can 'archive' any books you've bought from Kobo, so they don't show up on the e-reader (you can still get them from Kobo later if you want), unlike Amazon where they're always right there unless you delete them forever. Like I said, I side-load everything, I don't want to see the Amazon-displayed copies. I don't want to see the Amazon displayed ANYTHING.
Kobo also doesn't advertise to you. Even in a non ad-supported Kindle, the home page of the new Kindle software shows trending and suggested books. It's bloody advertising. The home page on the Kobo shows you things about your library, with a discrete text invitation at the bottom to find new books or make a wishlist. There is a 'Discover' tab where you can see suggested books and such, but you have to actively go there, which means you're seeing it because you want to see it.
It's very intuitive to use - there's tabs down the bottom that do what they say on the tin and the settings are clear what they do. If it goes to sleep on 'Books' it wakes up on 'Books'. If you have authors sorted by last name it shows them all sorted by last name (this was endless aggravation on the Kindle which seemed to have an 'I do whatever the fuck I like' approach). It displays a cute little 'sleeping' when it's asleep along with the cover of what you're currently reading (you can turn that last one off).
It natively supports a decent assortment of file types: KEPUB, EPUB, EPUB2, EPUB3, PDF, FlePub, MOBI, PDF, JPEG, GIF, PNG, BMP, TIFF, TXT, HTML, RTF, CBZ and CBR.
I cannot recommend the Kobo Libra 2 highly enough. It's the damn bees knees and I wish I'd gotten one years ago. I can't ever see going back to the Kindle.
Some pics and Calibre details under the cut (which doesn't seem to be working, darn it).
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(yes I have been rereading the Kitty series)
The Calibre plugins I grabbed are below, but tbh honest you don't really NEED any of them:
Tumblr media
I also converted my library to kepub, which isn't necessary, but gives you some nifty extra reading features.
To create Collections on your Kobo with Calibre
Decide what Calibre column you want to use for setting your Collections (I use tags, because I don't use it for anything else, but you can also make a new column in Preferences or use one of the others).
Make sure your Kobo is ejected then go to Preferences in the toolbar, locate the Import/export section, then click Sending books to devices.
For Metadata Management, choose Automatic management.
Click Apply.
Remain in Preferences, locate the Advanced section, then click Plugins.
Expand Device Interface.
Scroll down and select either Kobo Touch Extended, or if that's not present, KoboTouch.
Click Customize plugin.
Switch to the Collections, covers & uploads tab.
Checkmark Collections.
For Collections columns, enter the name of the Column you're going to use for Collections.
Checkmark Create collections.
Click OK.
Close Preferences and exit and restart Calibre.
Fancy up your library by putting your books in Collections and when you're done, Send to Device and those collections will be there, all nicely and satisfyingly organised on your Kobo.

A Suitable Bodyguard
(a semi-official pimping post)
Do you enjoy quiet warrior types there to protect tiny and somewhat naive (and feral) nerds?
Do you like anime type protagonists with brightly colored hair, fangs, and perhaps a secret or two?
How about a fantasy backdrop with swords and armor and outside politics and the fae?
A Suitable Bodyguard might be the nonsense for you!
Tumblr media
This is technically a prequel to A Suitable Consort (For the King and His Husband) as it is set about ten years before that story. Which makes this a whole universe now, but I don't have a name for it. So {insert shrug emoji} However, this story is m/m not m/m/m. :)
For nearly twenty years, noble families have torn the country apart battling for the throne. Until now, the Tialttyrin have avoided the chaos, since no other nobles will risk offending the mysterious, powerful fae by attacking their favorites. But as the violence encroaches into the Tialttyrin’s green valley, continued peace might require action. Or so Zelli, the family’s youngest and most fae member, believes.
Sheltered and inexperienced, Zelli resolves to save the valley and his family even if it means sneaking away to act on his own. He stops only to ask his family’s sworn guard Tahlen’s opinion on the matter. Thoughtful and reserved despite his young age, Tahlen has experience with the war going on outside the valley, as well as the respect of the other guards and the ear of the leader of the Tialttyrin. He surprises Zelli by agreeing something has to be done and that Zelli is the one to do it, but insists that if Zelli goes, Tahlen must go with him.
Tahlen is oath-bound to protect Zelli with his body and his life, but that oath says nothing about accompanying Zelli on a forbidden journey, or offering countless acts of service to the smallest and most useless member of the Tialttyrin family.
Zelli has no idea what to make of that and little time to think on it. His fae blood has started to act up in the most embarrassing ways, dangers from outside are creeping in like the fog the valley is known for, and the confusing stirring in his heart when Tahlen is near seems to be getting stronger.
As Zelli glimpses the warmth beneath Tahlen’s stony exterior, he grows closer to understanding his own feelings and how far he will go to keep Tahlen’s sacrifice from ever being necessary. It will take all of his quick thinking and generous nature, as well as some help from the unseen fae, but Zelli of the Tialttyrin will protect his people, his family, and above all, Tahlen.
As of right now it's up for pre-order on Smashwords and Amazon (and through other places like Kobo and Apple usually within a few days).
A Suitable Bodyguard
Out April 22nd!

One eldritch encounter... ♡
Christopher is unsure how this is supposed to work. If it was supposed to work at all. But the one thing he knows is: he needs it to work.
Throwing back his head, eyes closed, he uses his left hand to guide Gyth to his dick. Gyth lets him. At first, it feels wrong. Then again, Christopher thinks absentmindedly, people say gay sex is wrong. So, he could just as well be with an eldritch monster in the first place.
His voice is but a breathy hiss when the tentacle slides against his sensitive skin. He gasps as Gyth lifts him up higher, slow and careful, to have better access to his lower half. He curls his tentacle around the base of Christopher’s dick – slick and slow, it twirls around it, to the tip.
Christopher bends his back, fighting the urge to thrust forward. The sensation of Gyth’s hot tentacle is incredible – it gently rubs against the slit on his glans – and then pulls him forward by his cock with just the right amount of force.
Following the motion, back and forth once more, Christopher stifles a moan. His ass is steadied by the powerful bouquet of tentacles behind him, caressing his buttcheeks, twirling around his trembling legs. And arms. He won’t fall down, he’s safe and sound in place.
They quickly find their rhythm. Christopher now gives in to the temptation of looking at Gyth’s giant body in front of him – below him, too. Everchanging shreds of floating flesh, stroking him here and there. The whale song returns, cradling Christopher beautifully in this warm embrace.
Gyth wraps gentle tendrils around his wrists, where he must undoubtedly feel Christopher’s pulse going crazy. When his eyes flutter close again, more tentacles travel up his body. Not to overtake him but to stroke his chest. Gyth attaches suckers to his torso, over his nipples, and starts sucking gently in all those places, sending sparks of pleasure through Christopher’s pliant body.
A loud moan tears from his mouth, followed by labored breaths, and he desperately leans into the touch – God, he feels dirty right now –
Rhythmically, Gyth squeezes his dick. He is beautifully curled around it. He attaches the tiny suckers by the tentacle’s tip to Christopher’s glans to mirror the sucking on his nipples, wet and hot and soft.
He’s so big but his touches so focused, so controlled…
It is unbelievable, Christopher will think later, to be had by an eldritch abomination that he knows could tear him limb from limb but feeling safe under its touch. Not being creeped out. Not caring where up and down is anymore.

“I’m Sarah,” she said, before raising the bottle to her mouth and taking a sip. She then moved the bottle in front of the tiny man. “Want some?” He nodded, so Sarah tilted the drink, letting the liquid get closer to the bottleneck. Ryan placed his head inside the lipstick-smeared bottle, drinking mouthfuls of beer all at once. “Careful not to get stuck inside,” laughed Sarah as she watched Ryan’s head barely fitting the bottleneck. “Cause then you would miss getting stuck inside something else…”

Hello!! I saw that you shared a couple of ranwan fics before… So, I was wondering, Would you like to share with us your favorites?? 🥺 You know… for science 🙏
Anon!!! Hi!!! well… I'm not really that comfortable sharing fics, since our tastes may differ, but, under your own risk here are my favourites (or at least the ones I've saved):
The Right Hand of Light: Explicit, canon divergence, TXJ (0.5 timeline,) hurt/comfort.
Even Unseen Stars Still Burn: Teen and up, fantasy AU, Xia Sini is an AI (as an extension of CWN consciousness.)
The Best Way to Learn: Explicit, modern setting (university,) mutual pining, horny shit.
Armor up and say your prayers: Teen and up, modern setting, MR is a boxer, CWN is a doctor, first meetings.
The banished immortal: Teen and up, canon divergence, MR 2.0, first meetings, getting together, fluff.
Tiny shorts: Explicit, modern setting (roomates,) fem!ranwan, horny shit.
Tonight: Explicit, modern setting, exhibitionism and voyeurism, horny shit // good shit (MR masturbates displaying his beauty to CWN.) This fic deserves more love.
Be mine, if only for a night: Teen and up, fake/pretend relationship, mutual pining, pastries!! ✨
Counterpoint: Explicit, getting together, long fic, teacher/student relationship, modern setting (university AU), Pianist AU (extra points for not mentioning the basic bitch classical piano pieces, the author knows, and we appreciate it!!! 💖 swear to god that I stop reading when a fic mentions Clare de lune, jfc!!)
The idiot's guide to self-satisfaction: Explicit, MR is a camboy, horny shit.
I've read a lot, but sometimes I download them in my kobo or on my phone and forget to bookmark, so sorry, for a more complete, and in my opinion, a trustable list of ranwan fics, here is this beautiful master list made by @txjsmaid ✨💖

I haven’t had power for about 12 hours now. I missed work last night because no power means no internet, and my phone has such bad service where I live (basement apartment + super close to the border = HORRIBLE service) I couldn’t even use my hotspot to work at least until the laptop battery died. AND despite living only two blocks away from my job’s office, I couldn’t get there either because the snow is so bad there’s no way I could have even gotten out of the driveway (if they even had power at the office, there’s usually a generator I think but who knows). So I won’t be getting paid for that because it’s just considered an unpaid sick day. 😠 Digging into my twelve day long overtime + holiday pay cheque I’m gonna get.
Anyway, the power outage wouldn’t be half as bad if my phone just had better service. I have two charged laptops that I can use to charge my phone, but my service is so bad that it’s basically useless anyway. I’ll be lucky if this posts.
I’m so bored and so cold. I have a charged Kobo and a charged Switch but I don’t want to do either lmao. I’m used to my apartment being freezing cold too but it’s still usually warmer than this. No heat for twelve hours and counting. 😭 Plus since I’m in the basement it’s so DARK. I have one tiny window that hardly gets good light in the middle of the summer so in the winter in a snowstorm? Forget it. It might as well be the middle of the night. Plus I had to stuff a big blanket in the window to keep from feeling a draft so even if I did get light through it I wouldn’t now lmaooo.
Anyway now I’m just sitting here wrapped in a blanket eating chips because I can’t really cook anything else and don’t want to open my fridge or freezer and let the cold out. I can’t really see outside but my weather app says it’s STILL snowing. I’m really hoping it stops soon so they can get the power back on. Plus I’d kind of like to go to my parents’ for Christmas tomorrow. I’m starting to think it might be postponed til Boxing Day… 😭

What it’s about:
Myles didn’t have much of a choice. Death manifested itself in the hands of a man hell-bent on draining his body dry. The unyielding thirst for blood necessitated his demise. Yet, Myles wasn’t about to go down without a fight.
To Esteban, it was nothing more than a job. Nothing personal, just professional. And Myles wasn’t the first to grace his table, pleading for life. It never worked before. Those who entered his lab were nothing more than pawns in the struggle to keep life going.
Tasked with survival, humanity’s ability to move forward rested upon the backs of many vulnerable people. It was a battle fought in the open. Though, the conflict remained invisible to the naked eye. The plight of some fueled society’s thirst for resources. It needed blood.
Genetically, they were no different. Arms, legs, heads… and blood. Regular human beings, if not for their substantially diminished height. A genetic mutation was credited for their small bodies, diverging from normal sized humans centuries ago. Considered no more than pests, they barely co-existed, often meeting the same fate as other nuisances the giants did away with.
Lines consistently blurred due to these often complex relationships. Esteban and Myles’ situation was no different. Charm and gentle persuasion bought seconds, then minutes and eventually unlimited time.
Born from a metal table shrouded in death, a giant and tiny person forged an unlikely relationship. Friends, with benefits. Companions, some may say. A two inch tall man on the verge of death now making his best life with a man who wanted to kill him.
Their story was the exception.
But so was another relationship between Esteban and a different victim, the one who got away. Esteban found himself now a victim of blood thirst too, of relentless revenge that seeked to destroy his life in the process…

Thanks to iuthebarbarian for this thoughtful review of my sapphic Gothic romance, The Haunting of Heatherhurst Hall!
~
The amount of times I gasped or cried along with Kit and Alexandra would be embarrassing had anyone been around to see it. This book is written spectacularly, the mystery is perfectly paced, and the romance deeply fulfilling! Every bit of pining was keenly felt for me as the reader, and the surprise and joy with each victory just as much! I love how each woman sees the beauty in the other that they can't themselves (Kit's physical beauty and Alexandra's character/personality respectively), and all the literary references were so piercing, so apt for each situation. I loved especially a certain scene between Alexandra near the end as she cried out the lines to a certain poem. I could see it so clearly, like I was watching a movie...
The spookiness is surely spooky, the answers to the mystery fed to you in only tiny bite-sized pieces, and sometimes everything feels so sad and bleak, but rest assured—there is a happy ending for everyone! (Well...everyone who deserves it, anyway.)
The only critique I'd have for this book would be the sheer amount of times Alexandra's aquiline nose, raven hair, porcelain pale skin, and blood-red heart-shaped lips are referenced in Kit's narration. (But honestly, I get it. As a lesbian myself, I too can get caught up in the beauty of women, ha!)
All around an amazing piece! Thank you, Sir Nothwell, for every bit of it!
~
The Haunting of Heatherhurst Hall is a Gothic romance rife with horror and heartache, wherein an American heiress makes an ill-advised marriage to bring herself closer the woman who’s stolen her heart.

Region: Eastern Europe
Daughter of Mystery
Author: Heather Rose Jones

376 pages, published 2014
Original language: English
Native author? N/A
Age: Adult
Blurb:
Margerit Sovitre did not expect to inherit the Baron Saveze’s fortunes—and even less his bodyguard. The formidable Barbara, of unknown parentage and tied to the barony for secretive reasons, is a feared duelist, capable of defending her charges with efficient, deadly force. Equally perplexing is that while she is now a highly eligible heiress, Margerit did not also inherit the Saveze title, and the new baron eyes the fortunes he lost with open envy. Barbara, bitter that her servitude is to continue, may be the only force that stands between Margerit and the new Baron’s greed—and the ever deeper layers of intrigue that surround the ill-health of Alpennia’s prince and the divine power from rituals known only as The Mysteries of the Saints. At first Margerit protests the need for Barbara’s services, but soon she cannot imagine sending Barbara away—for reasons of state and reasons of the heart. Heather Rose Jone debuts with a sweeping story rich in intrigue and the clash of loyalties and love.

Genres: #alternate history #historical, medieval to 19th century #romance #political
My thoughts:
There were close to no books at all for the tiny country of Liechtenstein. This novel is set in the fictional country of Alpennia, in the European Alps, same as Liechtenstein. Though I can’t tell if this novel uses German names (as Liechtenstein should) or French.
Review to come.

Excerpt:
“Tell me about these selfless acts which will heal me.” Her lips caressed the glass as she sipped her drink.
Nelo’s breath caught at the sight. Remembering the conversation, he puzzled his chin with forefinger. “Good deeds will fill your days and contemplation your nights. At the end of your healing, a worthy, seductive male awaits your recovery.” He patted his chest. “The male would be me.”
“Cruor, you lack humility.”
“It is a flaw I work on.”
“In the meantime, you’ll assign me to a soup kitchen until I feel better about myself?”
“To something. Not a soup kitchen.” He tilted his glass, swallowing a sip and noticing how Elisabeta watched him.
“How do you know your solution will work?” she asked.
He rolled the amber liquid in the tumbler. “I am the Cruor, a male wise beyond his years.”
“With only a small flaw.”
“So tiny. Not worth mentioning.” He threw back his drink, rose, and shoved out his hand.

About the Author:
After retiring from her career in education, T. M. Smith settled in to write something more creative than lesson plans on split infinitives and inner-school memos on noise in the hallway.
Taking great interest in the lives of vampires, demons, elves, mages, and other magical beings, she began a paranormal romance series of five books with alpha males who aren't always nice and females who have no problem keeping them in line. The Blood Coven Series is complete. Her new project is a series of stand-alone, short novellas set in the Blood Coven World. In the meantime, she is working on a longer surprise project.
Here are more orts, scraps, and fragments from her life. (a homage to Virginia Wolf and Shakespeare.) She moved from sunny Las Vegas to the less-than-sunny Pacific Northwest. Here she has adventures with her daughter, son-in-law, and two granddaughters who also moved to the area. She also enjoys a membership at Bainbridge Artisan Resource Network (BARN), a local organization that supports the arts and offers classes and events in eleven different studios. It was at BARN where her critique group began. With equal time given to in-depth comments on each other's works, snarky remarks, and laughter, they have now been together nearly eight years.

“I made a bargain with a monster.
A vow to save both our lives.
I thought our commitment would stay true.
It didn’t.”
I’ve spent my entire life alone.
I’m well used to loneliness and the endless pain of having no one.
Sure, we made a bargain. We shared our secrets and made a vow.
But I warned her not to do one tiny thing.
One very important thing.
For a while, she obeyed me.
Until the night she didn’t.
And now…the connection we shared?
That alliance we forged?
It’s broken.
I’m broken.
And by the time I’m done with her…she’ll be broken too.
Triggers on every warning possible.
This is dark and will push every possible boundary that exists.
Be warned....
