Now that I’m vaccinated, I can go out and about and see things, like this art exhibit! I should say mini art exhibit- as this is ShMoMA. It’s a tiny exhibit just outside the Little Cloud Park on San Bernardino in Sandia Heights in Albuquerque. Eric and Ralph (I think it’s Ralph in the blue shirt??) made this cute little box and invite people to visit it and swap out artwork and document yourself doing it and use the #shMoMA tag. Her statement about the works in this show: “The world is my studio. Iwalk. I find. I make. I make meaning. What if our culture valued the natural world with less focus on mining precious materials from the earth, and more on honoring its beauty and bounty with reverence and respect? Baubles and beads have been coveted and collected since ancient times. Seeds, feathers, pebbles and shells have long been used to create art and adornment. These small works, embellished as if jewelry, might be worn as such. The Kingdom of Swaziland is a small African nation located between the Republic of South Africa and Mozambique. It was once under British control, but gained independence in 1968. Political parties were outlawed in 1973, and a revision of the constitution in 1977 granted the ruling monarch absolute power. This system is still in effect, and Swaziland counts itself alongside the Vatican, Oman, Brunei, and Saudi Arabia as one of the final frontiers of absolute monarchy. The photos were taken in the political capital, Mbabane, in September of 2011. The protesters demonstrated by singing, dancing, making speeches and burning a traditional cloth known as lihiya.
