Haven't had Opal before, but I've had Topaz, which is a closely-related variety.
Topaz is good for applesauce and cider, but it doesn't stand up well on it's own against other apples in the same flavor category (sweet side of sweet-tart). Given the option, I'd rather have an Empire or a Jonagold.
hey! i would love to have push notifications enabled for tumblr, because i'd like know when my friends message me, but unfortunately whenever i try to turn on push notifications, i get a notification for every single post i reblog stating that it has been successfully posted, and i can't disable them. it clogs up my notification feed and i have to dismiss them individually (which i realize has more to do with how my phone handles push notifications than tumblr itself, but) - is there any plan to work on an option to disable that notification?
Why hello, @tinymacaroni
Great news! Not only can you do this, but it is very straightforward.
On Android only, you can simply disable “Upload” in the Notifications menu in your phone settings, as displayed in the video below. This will stop notifications whenever you post, reblogs, etc.
On iOS, the system Notifications setting disables the whole notifications for a dedicated app. Or, to be more specific, you need to enable/disable the available notification settings in the Tumblr application Settings.
We hope this helps, and thanks, as always, for your feedback. And keep those questions rollin’!
@tinymacaroni submitted: found this little fella in my bathtub in portland, oregon and was wondering who it might be? thanks for all the help you give folks with bug stuff, btw!
My pleasure! This fellow looks like a waterlily leaf beetle, so maybe it thought there might be water lilies in your bathtub lol. Cute!
This week, 19-25th Feb 2023 is Aromantic Spectrum Awareness Week, so I have created a list of my favourite AO3 Aro witcher fics
Mending the Rift (T) by @kueble - Jaskier comes home to a grumpy best friend and they sort things out. This has an Aro!Jaskier and Ace!Geralt, who have retired to Corvo Bianco
Date Night (T) by @himbo-half-orc - Aiden and Lambert meet again after a few weeks separation. Lambert has made some special preparations, but it takes Aiden a long time to realise that this might in fact be a date.
Knocking on the Wrong Door (M) by tinymacaroni - Geralt finally brings Jaskier to Kaer Morhen, and Jaskier finds some solace as he works on getting over a crush he knows is going nowhere. Mixed canon, primarily books and Netflix sorta mashed together lol. This is Jaskier/Eskel with Aro!Geralt
Did it Work? (G) by I_bite_my_thumb_at_thee - Aro!Jaskier tries taking a love potion to see what it is like to fall in love. This is hilarious and a great take
Aperture (E) by grassylampshade - Gloryhole fic with Aro!Jaskier and various witchers.
Arrangements (G) by @himbo-half-orc - Jaskier is told by his parents he must find someone to marry - tonight, or they will choose for him. They have organised a ball for all of the eligible singletons in the area. The problem is, Jaskier is aromantic. Will he find his match?
Here are a few collections of Aro stories:
An Aro Through My Heart - this is a collection of stories by people from the @thepassifloradiscord from 2022
Aro fics by @himbo-half-orc- this is a collection of my stories on AO3
See? I'm a Mistborn blog (sometimes). Shoutout to @tinymacaroni for triggering this massive braindump based on allomancy and my degree. Spoilers for Mistborn through Era 2.
Knowns (from WOB or from the books):
-Steel/iron lines generally connect the center of mass of the metal and the user(although realmatics may apply; it's technically "center of self"), with the width a function of metal size and brightness a function of distance. Lines are in the Spiritual Realm.
-Push/pull strength is generally correlated to physical mass of the user, and metal inside a person cannot be interacted with (probably due to Cognitive/Spiritual shielding from Identity?)
-Sufficiently powerful coinshots can see electromagnetic interactions
-Different metals and colors have slight variations in steellines
-Apparently at sufficient strength, steelsight can see fundamental forces?
-Also nitpick, electromagnetic bonds aren't a thing that exist (or rather, all bonds are electromagnetic)
At a base level, steel/iron allomancy is detecting and interacting with metals (specifically linear force transmission along spiritual steellines). There's two theories to look at this; metallic bonds, so presumably either the density of electrons in the bond or the movement of the electrons within it (technically the mean free path), or band theory, which uses wave functions and orbital definitions to determine the energy properties of a material.
Metals are generally defined by their electron configuration (where electrons are free-flowing between metal atoms), although this gets tricky with semi-metals which are more covalently bonded; no evidence either way on whether Allomancy interacts with them. Molten/liquid metals behave "as a ferrofluid", meaning it correlates to a magnetic field; this is WEIRD because not all metals are magnetic, since magnetism is a property of the electron spin distribution within a metal. Even WEIRDER is that steel can push any metal, regardless of magnetism or allomantic power, except aluminum because it specifically blocks/negates allomancy.
If we use band theory instead then allomancy interacts with those materials that have no energy gap in their band diagram. Theoretically then, it is possible to create artificial, nonmetallic materials that can be interacted with, which seems wrong? Also, a sufficiently powerful allomancer could then (via interaction with the electrons) force any material to become a conducting metal, which Rashek may have done inadvertently at the end of Final Empire. This is probably the less likely of the two theories.
On the detection of different metals and colors, that's a simple one; every metal has a different electron configuration; for lines to appear different, steelsight must be able to differentiate orbital configurations. Colors is weirder, because color is a function of light interactions with the electrons of a material; to detect color differences, steelsight must be able to detect energy differences between the orbitals/electrons as well, since colors are a function of which color light matches the energy for absorption in a material. A savant then theoretically must be able to detect the entire EM spectrum?
Regarding the "center of self" comment, if you have two plates of metal side by side, there should be two steellines connected to the "center" of each piece. If you then weld the two plates together along an edge, then the two lines should then combine and point to the weld since the metal is now a single piece with a new center. At a nano level, at what point do two pieces of metal combine? Cold welding would be an interesting problem in the space age if you're relying on push/pulling; if the steelline suddenly shifts then the force is now being applied along a different vector, which could fuck up whatever delicate operation you're doing. Likewise with diffusion bonding; at what point are the two metals really considered "joined"? Would there be the original two lines that fade out as the new center line grows stronger as the weld progresses?
Alloying! Allomancy relies on eight base metals and eight alloys of those base metals. Base metals must be pure, and alloys must have specific compositions. Burning impure base metals or incorrect compositions of the alloys can make an allomancer sick, presumably due to the incorrect Identity of the metal in question. The we're given Pewter, with 91% tin and 9% lead, and Electrum, with 45% gold and 55% silver. Of the other alloys, steel is a binary alloy of iron and carbon, brass is a binary alloy of copper and zinc, bronze is a binary alloy of tin and copper, bendalloy (real world) is a quaternary alloy of 50% bismuth, 26.7% lead, 13.3% tin, and 10% cadmium, nicrosil (real world) is 14.4% chromium, 1.4% silicon, with balance of nickel, and duralumin is 96% aluminum and 4% copper. Infuriatingly, the base metal does NOT need to be the primary alloying element in the alloy, and non allomantic metals (or even nonmetals entirely; looking at you, carbon) can also be significant portions, which is baffling (but makes sense in Realmatics). I do wonder if there is a potential energy well (realmatically) between the alloy and the base; this would let you predict the result of any alloy, but would have a number of dimensions equal to the number of alloying elements (simple for binary, but exponentially more complicated as you add more elements)
Lerasium and atium are pure god metals in that they are concentrated essence of Preservation and Ruin, and likewise, Harmonium/ettmetal is pure essence of Harmony. Apparently you can purify Harmonium into atium and lerasium, but not the other way around. Harmonium is almost certainly an alkali metal given its violent reaction with water (and the fact that it results in harmonium hydroxide, indicating that it is a positive ion with a single electron in the s-orbital; 2 Hm (s)+2 H20 (l) -> 2 HmOH (s?) + H2 (g) (in theory), the energy given off by breaking the H bond then ignites the newly formed H causing the explosion)
Looking at fundamental force interactions, with the assumption that the "easiest" force to see is the EM force (since that's what would indicate bonding):
-Via detection of strong nuclear force, nucleons can be theoretically pushed/pulled apart from a nucleus, and individual nuclei can be separated into component bosons and fermions. The energy required to do so is on par with a nuclear reactor, so unclear with how allomantically powerful you'd have to be for this. Lerasium + Duralumin, maybe? Also on a possibly more interesting level, you could hold an atom together the same way by countering radioactive decay, meaning it would be easier to find/create/maintain high nucleon elements with N>100. With electron interactions also this would allow quantum electron effects to interact with Allomancy, which has interesting applications for photoelectrics, circuits, computing, and semiconductors. Actually this potentially would let you treat nuclear physics as a sandbox so long as you had the strength to do so. Terrifying!
-Via interaction of the weak force, mass and gravity can be adjusted by interacting with the Higgs field. I have no idea what the implications of this are, my specialty is chemistry and materials, not physics.
Men of Red and Gold; The only alloy that fits here would be red gold, which is a copper/gold alloy. More copper gives more red. Most common real world examples are Corinthian bronze and Shakudo.
@tinymacaroni @schwazombie @krumbaphant I don't remember which of you asked about Mishka learning tricks/doing a spin but I finally got a good video without her getting tackled by other dogs (like three months after the fact 😭)

@tinymacaroni submitted: this lil fella stood very still for me to get some pictures yesterday by a lake in portland, OR - who might it be? i'm guessing a damselfly of some sort, but that's about all i've got 😅
Beautiful! They are indeed a damselfly. Specificaly one of the most common species in your area, the Pacific forktail :)
