have u done any tutorials on how to shade/do textures the way u do? I love ur art its such a huge inspiration 4 me :3
thank you, i'm glad you enjoy my work! tbh i don't really like shading so i basically just do like... basic shading under the neck/nose and inside the ears of characters and then make it up on some of the clothes :') but highkey i'm always trying to avoid doing it.
as for inserting textures, i always make sure all my lineart is closed up, so that i can just plop the texture behind the lineart and then ✨magic wand tool✨ the area i want to have the texture in it and just keep that.
Tumblr media
then when colouring i just hit that 'luminance to transparency' action in paint tool SAI (i imagine most other art programs have a similar tool though possibly under a different name/might involve more than one button press) and then i make sure that the transparency is locked, then i colour the texture layer.
Tumblr media
as for the textures themselves, back in the day i used to use random stuff i found on google images, these days i try to just use these ones that i made for myself, just a bunch of scribbles to add texture to characters clothes, i also use some screentones i downloaded from deviantart user botanycameos. and that's pretty much it! 🍓🌈🌟

do you perhaps have any pointers for alien/creature design and biology? i've been working on my own speculative biology stuff for a haso au and my aliens don't come out funky enough.
A few I guess! No idea what haso is but this should serve you well in any event! Advice below the cut
What's pretty important I think is to have basal rules. For example on earth animals look very different but are also very similar. Food goes in one end and out the other, need for oxygen, etc. Same thing with modifying animals. A mammal going to the water will be constrained by it's biology, breathing air, making milk, these issues can be handled in many ways but need to be handled! So when making a new group of critters, just make some guidelines to follow and make them feel related.
What I find works best is I think of bullet points that are a must in making the design. Just 3-5 things that you can work around. For an example species 1. Apex predator of habitat 2. Advanced tool use 3. Two manipulating appendages 4. Omnivorous diet 5. Highly social There's a whole lot that can be made with those notes in mind, but this is a note list for humans! Nothing about colors or even number of limbs! But with the basal rule of even, hey! this is a mammal!, then we can get pretty close to the core of it. Or way off base! But the fun is to mess around and see where the flow takes ya.
MORE IMPORTANTLY than anything is DONT BE AFRAID TO SCRAP DESIGNS. If a design isn't working then you need to be open to change. For example my chimera started off as lava dwelling lobster taurs when I first made them up. There was so much that I started off thinking was crucial, turned out to be actively harming the project as a whole. You can have the coolest couch in the world, but if it's taking up 80% of the living room it might need to get gone.

hot take: you can ignore historical / typical correspondences entirely! sometimes, i don't even bother to identify what a flower is before including it in a spell. to me, it's not queen anne's lace, it's the pretty white flowers my nena used to pick and put in a vase in her house. it reminds me of childhood and youth and rejuvenation and innocence. if the other meaning doesn't ring true to me, why should i pretend it does?

Greatest piece of writing advice I can offer is to get weirdly interested in things. Become off-putting. If the person you're rambling your painstakingly esoteric knowledge to does a sort of queasy smile and looks like they want to run away, you're on the right track.

i always have 10 backups of waverly at a time for the just in case and its been damn handy to have so many backups for various reasons but mostly for maintenance or when i load the hood w/o the hood deco by accident.
every time i exit the game, i immediately make a backup, hoodcheck it and move on about me day. idc if that means i have multiple sessions in a day as long as it means i dont loose a ton of progress or something.
so this is a reminder: ALWAYS REMEMBER TO BACKUP YOUR GAME!

Y’all I picked up these chilly penguins from a local store and they’re a life saver.
I prefer them to the traditional cone kongs because they last longer and lay on their back. Filled those little suckers up with rehydrated kibble, low-sodium chicken broth and stuck a cookie in the middle.
Voila, my dogs are happy for the next 45 minutes! Plus, they’re only $8.95 on Amazon. Good stuff.

Here’s our resident 5 month old croc chowing down on hers. We’ve named him beef penguin.

Hello there fellow fanfic writer moon!
I saw your recent post about looking up for synonyms and I don’t know if you know about this but there’s a site that’s called “one look thesaurus” where you enter whatever word you need and gives you the meaning of the word and synonyms. It can be a word or a phrase, whatever you need. It also has antonyms. It comes really handy when you’re writing.
If you knew about it, you can ignore this ask. Anyway, hope you have a great day! 🌟

My cousin ended up commissioning me for a digital picture and since you do art commissions professionally, are there any dimensions you recommend for a vertical drawing? Her bf doesn't want it to be toooo big and I think he has plans of printing it out to give to his parents possibly? Any size recs are appreciated cause I am just l o s t when it comes to this, thanks!
heyo!
these days, my vertical canvases are usually 1200 x 1800 pixels, which i think is probably quite non-standard, but is a habit leftover from when i had a much slower laptop and going above these dimensions would slow everything down. and often when i DO need to print things (generally if someone asks me to put a specfic piece on my redbubble, i'll enlarge it using waifu2x)
i'd actually recommend going like... A4 at 300dpi if you know before starting that you're going to be making it specfically for printing, which is 2480 x 3508 pixels 📃
