꒱ in which joel finds that he loves skincare as long as it’s with you

thinking about joel walking into your bathroom and seeing you rubbing all sorts of creams and serums on your face,

scoffing and strolling past you to retrieve his toothbrush, mumbling something like, “m’silly girl,”

he’s not sure how he went from brushing his teeth to being sat upon the toilet seat, feet atop the pink bathroom mat you only had to flutter your eyelashes for.

a fluffy white headband adorned joel’s head, working to keep his flopping brown hair away from his face, two bunny ears stick out of the headband you somehow convinced him to wear.

“now darlin-“ he stuck up a hand to pause you in your ministrations of trying, and failing, to open the bottle.

he was just about to request, as kindly as possible, that selfcare sunday be over, despite it being a tuesday.

but instead he simply sighed and spoke softly to you, “do y’need some help with that, bambi?”

the nickname never failed to leave you speechless, so you simply poured and nodded you head dumbly as he wrapped his warm arms around your own, taking the bottle and unclasping the lid for you, still keeping you snuggled in his body heat.

seeing your face light up, eyes sparkling at the sight of his face covered in some aqua green goo, made the uncomfortable tightening feeling in his face worth it.

he loved you. and he loved skincare sundays (on any day).

your skincare routine was quickly established as a regular in your relationship with joel. doing skincare had never even crossed joel’s mind, and even when sarah asked for products he was always left sort of.. confused to the appeal of the ritual. but when he did it by chance, it then it had become a regular part of your shared day.

he likes to walk through the steps with you in the morning and the evening, standing next to you and gazing into the bathroom mirror.

he finds it amusing how serious you act when applying the mask to his face - brows furrowed, nose twisted, lips pouting ; the scolding, slightly whine in your voice as he purposely forces you to adjust it once again.

“god! lean down, joel, you’re too tall,”

joel knows that you usually are quite shy and hesitant to speak your mind, so he appreciates moments like this.

and he loves that you’re comfortable enough around him to be bossy.

I’m pretty sure I made a post on this before, but part of the reason why I like the casting of Joel and Ellie in the TV show is that the actors clearly don’t look related to each other. I feel that part of the reason why the game worked was that Naughty Dog designed Joel and Ellie so that they look like they could be related. They aren’t, but you feel a sort of familial connection there just purely on physical appearances. And “The Last of Us” isn’t the first game to do this trick, Telltale’s “The Walking Dead” also did the same thing with Lee Everett and Clementine.

Since the show can’t get away with that, there’s much more emphasis on the writing and the actors’ chemistry in order to sway the audience. Not to say that the game’s portrayal of Joel and Ellie is cheap, I’m just saying that it’s much harder for the show to portray Joel and Ellie as a father-daughter unit because it’s so obvious that they’re not related. On a related note, this is also why I didn’t mind that the actress for Sarah didn’t have the game character’s blonde hair since the actress looked like she could actually be related to Pedro Pascal. The casting actually makes sense from a story perspective.

With all that said, this makes casting Pedro Pascal even more brilliant since this is the guy that convinced the world he had a father-child relationship with Baby Yoda while not showing his face 99% of the time.

꒱in which joel miller and his daughter's sweet teacher confront one another about their situationship

you shouldn't like joel miller.

the unattainable joel miller. every mom, single or not, wanted him.

he was a single father. he was gruff and.. standoffish. he was quite a lot older than you. you were his daughter’s english teacher. he worked a lot.

somehow you had ended up kissing him on multiple occasions. but spent time with him more often than any ‘just friend should’. definitely more than any regular teacher would.

you found yourself enjoyed more than just the feel of his mouth on yours.

you constantly searched for his endearing comments, his different opinion grew important to you, you craved his company.

which lead you to be standing in the hallway, whisper yelling at the man himself, during your break at parent teacher interviews.

“what, did you think I kissed you all these times because I was doing it for the shits and giggles?” joel began to raise his voice past the hushed yelling, in frustration.

exasperated with the man in front of you, throwing your hands up, words were rising out of your mouth with no thought behind them.

“because I like you!”

you calmed down after a moment, and while you weren’t quite sure how you expected joel to react to your deceleration, you hadn’t expected long, long silence.

after two or three minutes, it was ridiculous and he still wouldn’t talk, so you decided you would.

“look, we can pretend I never confessed if it means we’ll stay okay—” “What?! No! You can’t just take back your confession! That’s such a coward move darlin” brushing your cheek with a feather light touch of his thumb, hardened from work.

he suddenly was much closer than you realised, “I’ll get over you. I promise. These feelings, they’re— they’re only temporary, I swear. I—I’ll get over you. Just please don’t leave me—”

a harsh sigh inturrupted you, throwing you off your tangent in an attempt to smooth things over with joel. as much as you wanted to be with the man, you would rather keep your relationship the way it is forever than go back to living your life without him in it.

“I care about you baby, i mean-“ joel released a sarcastic low chuckle, “of course i fuckin’ do, I just, you’re younger, sarah’s teacher, didn’t mean to fall for you.” “And neither did I.”

joel’s thumb that had been rubbing gentle circles on your cheek paused in its tracks, and it took a beat for the conversation to continue.

“…fucking pardon?
