inch rested to see how vox handles its partnership with youtube going forward. talk is cheap but if they want to make real change on the platform they have a massive bargaining chip with pulling their content from the platform (including polygon). doubt anything is going to come of this but inch resting to think about nonetheless
vox's comment and my own Spicy Take TM below the cut, for those who don't know what's going on
Tumblr media
[image description: a screenshot from the verge's article about the harassment Carlos Maza has been experiencing, and YouTube's response of saying the harassment he's faced does not violate their guidelines. The text reads:
When asked for comment, Vox Media publisher Melissa Bell told The Verge that “by refusing to take a stand on hate speech, [YouTube] allows the worst of their communities to hide behind cries of ‘free speech’ and ‘fake news’ all while increasingly targeting people with the most offensive and odious harassment.”
Here is the full statement from Vox Media:
At Vox Media, we have embraced partnering with other organizations to bring our work to as broad an audience as possible. We believe in the advantages of a free and open web that allows people to find their voices online. We share this belief with YouTube, and have spent years creating incredible work on the platform and growing loyal, engaged audiences across the YouTube community.
But the platform and the system now appears to be broken in some ways that we can’t tolerate. By refusing to take a stand on hate speech, they allow the worst of their communities to hide behind cries of “free speech” and “fake news” all while increasingly targeting people with the most offensive and odious harassment. They encourage their fans to follow suit and we now see our reporters and creators consistently targeted by the worst abuse online, with no remedy or ability to protect themselves.
YouTube knows this is a problem – it’s developed anti-harassment policies to hold its creators accountable and remove them from the platform when they are in violation. Yet YouTube is not enforcing the policies and are not removing known and identified users who employ hate speech tactics. By tacitly looking the other way, it encourages this behavior and contributes to a society more divided and more radicalized.
YouTube must do better and must enforce their own policies and remove creators who promote hate.]
source
"the platform and the system now appears to be broken in some ways that we can’t tolerate"
okay, so what does that mean for the future of vox properties on youtube? are you going to pull your content and start hosting it yourself? are you going to use your sway to threaten a massive loss to youtube if they do not make and enforce changes to their policies? or are you going to give statements like these and then immediately turn around and continue to use the platform as if nothing ever happened?
just. inch resting.

New Post has been published on Squirrel Hunting Journal
New Post has been published on https://squirrelhuntingjournal.com/sightron-stac-4-20x50-ffp-illuminated/
Sightron STAC 4-20x50 FFP Illuminated
Tumblr media
Sightron introduced a new offering in the STAC lineup that could prove as a decent option for a squirrel optic. Being that I've never owned or evaluated a First Focal Plane scope, this seemed like a good place to start. Having already evaluated the STAC 4-20x50 MOA2, I knew the glass was good enough to give this scope a shot. The thinner MOA2 reticle only lacked illumination to make it a viable squirrel reticle, and this new Sightron STAC FFP offers illumination. So let's see what this new Sightron offering is all about.
Tumblr media
SCOPE APPEARANCE:
Sightron hasn't changed anything here. This model still carries the matte finish that will show markings if scuffed, but the advantage is it keeps the glare muffed with the dull finish. The turrets are exposed and the focus, illumination control, and battery compartment are very aggressively textured.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Glass/Clarity:
After evaluating the original STAC MOA2, I was already aware of the decent glass I'd be getting with this optic. I don't see any difference in this glass from it's predecessor. In my opinion it's very close to being SIII quality glass, without the price. This model is threaded for a sunshade, but doesn't have one included. Too bad because I'm a sunshade fan!
Adjustments:
Really big, well marked turrets are something I've come to expect with the newer breed of scopes on the market. No worries for me because I'm a fan. As long as they are re settable to zero I invite them on any new optic I try. If I'm able to re-set to zero, and have a field issue, I can at least know if my turrets have been adjusted. I'm also happy to report that the turrets are both audible, and tactile. To me, more companies should spend time making sure the turrets are not mushy to the feel, and very precise to their markings. Sightron has that covered with this optic! The FFP version also offers a zero stop option for those of you who shoot long range with your 22's. While I don't do much dialing for longer ranges, I appreciate the option.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Who doesn't like big, aggressive turrets?
The turrets are re-settable to zero via the torx head screw in the center of each turret. It's a very simple process to reset these turrets to the zero mark for solid validation that your optic is where it's supposed to be. The side focus wheel, along with the illumination control, and battery compartment are all jumbled together on the opposite side from the windage turret. This is about the only real estate on the scope for this type of arrangement. These wheels are overly aggressive, and are better suited for gloved hands. The side focus wheel moves smoothly, but still lacks any yardage markings. The illumination control is extremely stiff, and sharp. It offers eleven different brightness levels, with off positions between each level. That's a nice touch, and much less time spent operating that switch. The battery compartment is simple to access and houses a single 2032 battery for power. Like the first STAC MOA2, this scope keeps the fast focus eye piece.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tracking has been excellent thus far in my evaluation. I've had no issues getting my point of impact to match my point of aim. Side focus is quite precise, and will focus under 10 yards. That's a huge benefit for anyone shooting air rifles or rimfires! I really wish all scope manufactures would lower the parallax on the bottom end to at least 15 yards. That way they would pick up the rimfire market. When a scope maker bottoms out at a 50 yard parallax, I won't consider that optic, as it doesn't fit my needs. Anyone that has been squirrel hunting knows what a blurry image you get of a 10 yard squirrel if you are working with a 50 yard parallax..... The magnification ring is very smooth, and easy to adjust with the proper amount of knurling.
Tumblr media
Ring Height:
This will be no surprise as I have a very deep affection for the BKL-303 low rings for any 30mm tubes under 56mm on my CZ 452' or 455's. They work no matter the rail size being 3/8' or 11mm, they are aluminum for reduced weight, and they are single strapped.
Reticle:
Reticles are something I've become rather particular about. When squirrel hunting I prefer something I can range out with. Most people enjoy the standard duplex and that will work perfectly if you don't engage squirrels much over 60 yards with a sight in of 50 yards. At 60 yards I like to think I'm just getting started, especially in the late season. Using a Mildot reticle this past season, I made a headshot on a squirrel at 119 yards! The FFP STAC I chose came with a Mil-Hash reticle, of which I have no prior experience with. It was very simple to understand, and the holdovers aren't too confusing. The numbers etched in the reticle are helpful to keep you true to what hash you are using.

Sightron STAC FFP @ 10X
This scope gave me my first opportunity at trying out First Focal Plane. I've solely been in Second Focal Plane camp for all my hunting tenure. While the reticle on an FFP scope is still usable at the lower powers, it makes the crosshair very small and difficult to see. I find on this optic that eight power is about the point where the reticle is large enough for me to pick up in the woods. Barring having a squirrel at 10 yards and needing to make a shot with a lower magnification, eight power and above would typically be my choice. Maxing the scope out at 20X, I still find the reticle small enough to shoot 1/2" groups while sighting in. The sleeper in this whole reticle discussion is the addition of illumination! This takes away any issue of loosing your reticle in low light or in thick vegetation. When considering a thin type, ranging reticle I'd always opt for illumination. This is all the SFP STAC MOA2 lacked in being a perfect contender for the long range squirrel timber.

Manufacturers Specs:
If anything deters you from this optic it will be the weight. Anytime you add a feature like illumination you are going to incur additional heft. Aside from that nitpick, the scope offers many features that make it a great optic for any game animal or just paper punching.
Item Number:26016Sku Number:793139-260161Model Name:S-TAC4-20X50FFPZSIRMHMagnification:4-20XObjective Diameter (mm):50Focal Plane:FirstFocal PlaneFov (ft@100 Yds.):22.2-4.36Eye Relief (in.):3.9-3.7Reticle Type:Mil-Hash-4(IR)Click Value (@100 Yds.):.1 MRADMinutes Per Revolution:5 MRADW/E Travel (@100 Yds.):12/22.9 MRADKnob Style:Tactical (Resettable)Zero Stop:YesFocus Type:Side FocusParallax Range:10yds to InfinityFinish:Matte BlackWaterproof:YesFully Multi Coated:Yes (Zact-7 TM 7-Layer)Weight (oz.):25.6Length (in.):15.0Tube Diameter:30mmSunshade Included:NoIlluminated Reticle:Yes
Two things that will keep this scope off of squirrel hunters rifles are cost, and weight. If you are planning a sit and snipe mission, then this is a great scope for that job. If you are shooting in the Precision Rimfire Leauge, this is a good option. It's difficult to pick the perfect scope for every type of setup, but I appreciate the additions Sightron has made to the STAC lineup to cover some of the misses on the non-illuminated options. Now if I can just get them to add mildots......

Kristie’s Favorite Anime of 2018
Here are the (overall) transcripts of my end of the year audio posts covering my favorite anime experiences of 2018. All audio can be located on podbean but tumblr is typically more receptive to the written word and I’m still learning how to do audio levels and editing; it makes sense if people rather read my goofy thoughts!
So starting from the bottom and working our way up to number one, here is my #1 top pick, my favorite anime of 2018!:
Tumblr media
Megalo Box Directed by Yō Moriyama From TMS Entertainment
Megalo Box is the 50th anniversary project for Tomorrow's Joe which is a boxing manga written by Ikki Kajiwara and illustrated by Tetsuya Chiba. When it was published in 1968 Tomorrow's Joe really struck a cord with Japan's youth and the working class and the character of Joe has gone on to become a pop culture symbol of sacrifice and work, representative of the strength of the downtrodden and disenfranchised.
1968 was the start of many grass roots movements in Japan, that year alone saw hundreds of student protests against nuclear-power; US occupation; Vietnam, government and educational corruption; economic imbalance, it was a time of campus rebellions and smaller towns and prefectures pushing back against big companies, against societal standards of success and happiness, and it was done violently.
Tomorrow's Joe, a story about a wandering juvenile named Joe struggling in the slums of Tokyo who takes up boxing to survive, captured and expressed the frustrated feelings of the lower classes and dissatisfied student bodies in it's time. Every iteration of the story that's been told, four films three tv shows, has tried to adjust to contemporary emotions while maintaining it's core idea on fighting truth to power.
Megalo Box absolutely accomplishes this and hot damn it does it in a cool fucking way!
Megalo Box takes place in a futuristic setting but relies on telling it's story through the aesthetics and visual cues of the past. All the boxers wear "gear", a metal framework attached to their arms which makes their attacks more lethal, and there is a made up science and technology and blahblah it's futuristic! It's not high science fiction but it's not today and now. You get it.
Junk Dog is a young man in the megalo box illegal underground making money by throwing fights as directed to him by his partner Nanbu. Junk Dog is not satisfied with his existence. He's poor, doesn't have a name, doesn't have citizenship, doesn't have control over if he wants to win a fight or not. One night he comes across the leader of the Shirato Group who is the big company behind megalo boxing and they've just announced a open tournament called Megalonia where if you place in the rankings no matter what you'll get a shot at the belt. Junk Dog picks a fight with Shirato's bodyguard who happens to be of course a world class Megalo Boxer named Yuri - they don't get around to fighting but the encounter changes both of them and instills a transformative, and yeah I'm saying it I don't care, romantic rivalry within them and we go from there.
Nanbu and Junk Dog fake citizenship to enter the tournament, they find backing, help, and a tangled web of training, money, hardship, corruption, self perseverance and self preservation takes off.
This is a really good show. Every week my husband Lee and I were just - we were dying to get around to this show we needed that new episode BAD. There is so much that is good and enjoyable and engaging about this incredibly dense and layered sports anime, it's almost overwhelming to talk about. Who am I that I can explain in a mere 15 minutes what Megalo Box accomplishes and does so wonderfully, ya know?!
Megalo Box is a series that, as I briefly mentioned before, relies on a very distinct era of anime storytelling; this series looks and feels like something you found in the back of Blockbuster in their one row of anime.
Like, you'd find Meglao Box between the one of each VHS copies of Appleseed and Kite that every Blockbuster ever had - this series, very specifically, not only perfectly emulates and bottles the designs and animation strengths of popular anime from the late 80s to the late 90s (things like Wicked City, Bubblegum Crisis, Gunbuster, Evangelion, Trigun, and Cowboy Bebop) but Megalo Box successfully sells itself as that found gem, as that personal awe inspiring experience of being lucky enough to come across something, try it, and be blown away...
And I know that sounds kind of kooky, but I lived through that era of anime; Megalo Box's choices to de-rez it's footage, to add graininess, to do tightly cropped sequences as though the aspect ratio has been adjusted from an original format, is not lost on me or I imagine anyone who did the work trying to access anime before the days of DVDs, streaming, and simulcasts - here in the English speaking world and in Japan. That experience is more universal than one would assume; it's a nostalgic kick that visually defines this show and works magnificently well in creating shorthand world building. It's easy for me to get behind anything the show does because I already know this kind of show, which again I know sounds crazy or silly but I really believe that that's what Megalo Box was going for.
I 100% think anyone younger than me or not even an anime fan can pick up this series and be entertained and get really into it because, it's again, really good: But that doesn't mean the series isn't trying to recall a very particular time frame of storytelling trends and character work. This series is absolutely doing that and I'm bring it up because I want that to be highlighted and known, 'cause it's fantastic!
It is the visual presentation that carries the bulk of this series through it's more generic turns. We all know a boxing story, because it's always the same story, but Megalo Box utilizes it's biggest advantage over it's live action counter parts by injecting it's world with a visual coding that creates a new experience that feels familiar, that feels known, which doesn't hurt it's commonalities with other boxing stories but enhances them towards new personal spaces with it's audience. Which is, uhh, very cool.
Megalo Box is gripping from the very start, it builds and grows in it's layers of depth and character work, it can make you cry AND want to learn to throw a punch; the dance between the show and viewer is so good! Haha, I'm having a hard time explaining what I mean in this regard, but if you've experienced Megalo Box you know what I'm trying to say.
Megalo Box feels personal, it feels reflective of our hardest struggles, of anyone's fight. And that's the hallmark of the pop culture imprint of Tomorrow's Joe, of the strength and legacy of this franchise and why it's still making the rounds; it's an underdog story that moves beyond just wanting to see someone win but one that latches onto you and won't let go, Joe's wins become your wins and rooting for him creates a form of self belief. AND it looks and sounds cool as hell!
Megalo Box impressed me and delighted me every step of the way and by the time we got to that last episode - I can't even begin to explain the tension that was in my house! Lee and I just... After a while our engagement to the show became verbal. During a fight lee would mutter "Get up!" and I'd go "oh jesus" and we'd say stuff like "get him" be giving advice and like, that's pretty intense. To be so in it you're involuntarily responding in an attempt to direct events? That's not something that happens usually happens to me and it happen more and more as the episodes went on that by the end we were both very literally on the edge of our seats hands covering our faces as though in prayer.
So.
Megalo Box is it for me! It's the years winner, by total knock out.

The following reflection is courtesy of Don Schwager © 2021. Don's website is located at Dailyscripture.net
Meditation: Do you rejoice in the good that others do? Jesus reprimands his disciples for their jealousy and suspicion. They were upset that someone who was not of their company was performing a good work in the name of Jesus. They even "forbade" the man "because he was not following us". Jesus' reply is filled with wisdom: "No one who does a mighty work in my name will be able soon after to speak evil of me." Are we not like the disciples when we get upset at the good deeds of others who seem to shine more than us? Paul says that "love is not jealous... but rejoices in the right" (1 Corinthians 13:4,6).
Love does not envy others
Envy and jealousy, its counterpart, are sinful because they lead us to sorrow over what should make us rejoice - namely, our neighbor's good. The reason we may grieve over another's good is that somehow we see that good as lessening our own value or excellence. Envy forms when we believe that the other person's advantage or possession diminishes or brings disgrace on us. Envy is contrary to love. Both the object of love and the object of envy is our neighbor's good, but by contrary movements, since love rejoices in our neighbor's good, while envy grieves over it.
The love of God frees us from envy and jealousy
How can we overcome envy? With the love that God has put into our hearts through the gift of the Holy Spirit (Romans 5:5). The Holy Spirit purifies our heart and frees us from our disordered passions, such as envy, jealously, greed, and bitterness. God's love is a generous and selfless love which is wholly oriented towards our good. The love that God places in our hearts seeks the highest good of our neighbor. God's love purifies and frees us from all envy and jealousy - and it compels us to give generously, especially to those who lack what they need.
Love gives freely and generously in kind deeds
Every one in need has a claim on us because they are dear to God who created them in his own image and likeness (Genesis 1:26-27). God created us in love for love. We are most free and happy when we love as he loves. The love and charitable help we show to our neighbor also expresses the gratitude we have for the abundant mercy and kindness of God towards us. Jesus declared that any kindness shown and any help given to those in need would not lose its reward. Jesus never refused to give to anyone in need who asked for his help. As his disciples we are called to be kind and generous as he is. Are you grateful for God's mercy and kindness towards you and are you ready to show that same kindness and generosity towards your neighbor?
Gregory of Nyssa (330-395 AD), an early church father wrote:
"God never asks his servants to do what is impossible. The love and goodness of his Godhead is revealed as richly available. It is poured out like water upon all. God furnishes to each person according to his will the ability to do something good. None of those seeking to be saved will be lacking in this ability, given by the one who said: 'whoever gives you a cup of water to drink because you bear the name of Christ, will by no means lose his reward'" (ON THE CHRISTIAN MODE OF LIFE 8.1)
Those who show kindness and charity will be greatly rewarded
Who in their right mind would want to lose their reward and then be deprived of joy in the end? We have been given the greatest of rewards - God himself who is perfect love and source of abundant life and unending happiness. Paul the Apostle tells us that "God's love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit" (Romans 5:5). God's love purifies our hearts and compels us to express kindness and charity towards our neighbor who is created in the image and likeness of God. Do you allow the love of Christ to transform your heart that you may treat your neighbor with loving-kindness and mercy?
Avoiding evil and the near occasion of sin
Was Jesus' exaggerating when he urged his followers to use drastic measures to avoid evil and its harmful consequences (Mark 9:42-47)? Jesus set before his disciples the one supreme goal in life that is worth any sacrifice, and that goal is God himself and his will for our lives which leads to everlasting peace and happiness. Just as a doctor might remove a limb or some part of the body in order to preserve the life of the whole body, so we must be ready to part with anything that causes us to sin and which leads to spiritual death.
Jesus warns his disciples of the terrible responsibility that they must set no stumbling block in the way of another, that is, not give offense or bad example that might lead another to sin. The Greek word for temptation (scandalon) is exactly the same as the English word scandal. The original meaning of scandal is a trap or a stumbling block which causes one to trip and fall. The Jews held that it was an unforgivable sin to teach another to sin. If we teach another to sin, he or she in turn may teach still another, until a train of sin is set in motion with no foreseeable end. The young in faith are especially vulnerable to the bad example of those who should be passing on the faith. Do you set a good example for others to follow, especially the young?
"Lord Jesus, fill me with your Holy Spirit that I may radiate the joy of the Gospel to others. May your light and truth shine through me that others may find new life and joy in you, and freedom from sin and oppression."
The following reflection is from One Bread, One Body courtesy of Presentation Ministries © 2021.
JEALOUS CHRISTIANS
“Are you jealous?” —Numbers 11:29
People who have been given a new life in Jesus and are filled with the Spirit seem especially tempted to spiritual jealousy. They’re jealous of Eldad and Medad prophesying (Nm 11:29), of Moses leading (Nm 12:1), of a stranger expelling demons (Mk 9:38), or of John and James trying to get a “spiritual” promotion (Mt 20:24).
The Lord does not tolerate spiritual jealousy. Miriam became a snow-white leper after her outbreak of jealousy against Moses (Nm 12:10). Jesus said that being drowned or maimed is preferable to falling into the sin of spiritual jealousy (Mk 9:42-47). The first murder was committed because of spiritual jealousy. Cain was jealous that Abel’s offering was accepted by God and his own was not (Gn 4:4-5). Jesus was crucified because of the jealousy of the religious leaders (Mt 27:18). The Jews of Antioch in Pisidia persecuted Paul and Barnabas because of jealousy (Acts 13:45).
Some of history’s worst sins can be attributed to spiritual jealousy. Resist any temptations to jealousy and repent of any sins of jealousy.
Prayer:  Father, may I rejoice that others are more gifted and more honored than I am.
Promise:  “Any man who gives you a drink of water because you belong to Christ will not, I assure you, go without his reward.” —Mk 9:41
Praise:  “He has robbed death of its power and has brought life and immortality into clear light through the gospel” (2 Tm 1:10). Risen Jesus, You are worthy of praise!

Tainá Müller: A Voice to be Heard
Tumblr media
by Tudo | Oct 13rd, 2020 | Interview
Student of Philosophy, the actress believes that without debate there is no democracy
She is one of the eloquent voices of feminism. She is active to talk and reflect on this and other subjects such as: pandemic, philosophy, environment, artificial intelligence, social networks, and of course, on the new Netflix suspense series “Bom Dia, Verônica”, but the adventures of the actress do not end there, with release scheduled for the end of the year, Tainá is writing a book on motherhood. "It's a kind of philosophical chat, a little unpretentious, but with a lot of confessional moments of exchange," she explained.
In this exclusive interview with TUDO magazine, Tainá reveals herself to be a safe and mature woman to make her choices.

Revista TUDO: Debuting the series “Good morning, Veronica” on the streaming platform, you play a clerk who decides to investigate a crime. During the creation process, did you ever visit a police station and learn a little about a clerk's routine? How was your laboratory and how long did it take you to prepare for this job?
Tainá Müller: Yes, I did a two-month preparation with Sergio Penna, which included a visit to the homicide police station in Rio. There, I had access to the routine of police officers from many areas, studied cases of femicide to understand the particularities of this crime and followed the work closely of a clerk. All of this was fundamental to Veronica's composition. But other than that I also had an emotional preparation, to dive into the psychology of the character from the script and a body preparation, which involved fights and shooting classes.
RT: As a matter of fact, the series addresses a little explored genre - thriller -, especially on broadcast television, do you believe that the streaming platforms give the opportunity for the actors to work on other, more interesting themes outside the box?
TM: For sure. The Brazilian audiovisual market is changing very fast, following the global trend of globalization of content. With that, it is natural that we have a greater diversity of themes, genres and how good we are having this opportunity here in Brazil. “Good Morning, Veronica” got my attention from the beginning, precisely because it was very different from everything I had ever seen.
RT: In March the whole world was caught off guard by a pandemic causing the population to be quarantined, isolated, and all of us were affected in some way, some more others less, emotionally, financially. How did those days go by for you and your family?
TM: It was full of emotional, ups and downs, on this roller coaster that became 2020. It is a period of fear and uncertainty and I don't think there was a person in the world who was not affected by this impact. And it is not just the pandemic, there is something very strange in the air in politics, in climate change, in our behavior. But honestly, despite feeling it all, I don't feel comfortable complaining about anything right now. I am aware of my privilege and how hard it is being for people in the most vulnerable positions. I am very sad to see all this around me, I try to help as I can and I take it one day at a time.
RT: We saw that you participate in a group that discusses feminism, an important action nowadays, but how do you see the feminist movement 20 years from now, for example? Because although we have achieved a lot, there is still much to do.
TM: About three years ago I started to study feminism more deeply. I owe a lot to teachers Djamila Ribeiro and Márcia Tiburi, who gave weekly classes to this group of mine on the subject, in a very philosophical and academic way. I honestly cannot imagine what the world will be like in twenty years, but in my utopias I create a much more feminine world, in every way. We have been living for centuries in an energetic imbalance between feminine and masculine. The two forces must be in harmony and equality in order to prosper without self-annihilation. Patriarchy has been stifling the feminine of the world for so long that today we need to fight for the most basic rights. I believe that the toxicity that we experienced at that time comes from this virility without measure, which is predatory, without care and without reflection. I hope that men can be free to rediscover their feminine side of protection, nutrition and delicacy with details, with the subtle. And that women rediscover all the creative power that the feminine has, without the fear of violence, oppression and silence. I gradually feel that this movement has already started. Men and women are becoming more aware and the backlash of this is an attempt to hold on to the unstoppable which is the path of evolution.
Tumblr media

RT: Back to the classroom you chose the philosophy course, and philosophy is the search for knowledge, reflection, questions and wisdom, but in the midst of everything that is happening (deforestation, homophobia, prejudice, intolerance, patriotism, hatred and etc.). Can you see a light at the end of the tunnel for future generations?
TM: I believe that the light at the end of the tunnel will not magically come out, it is the result of building thought, of resuming the ability to imagine. Yes, I think that today's social upheaval is an identity crisis caused by the excess of (dis) information that we receive every day through the screens. Our thinking is influenced by an algorithm that constantly reaffirms our tastes and values, creating thought bubbles with insurmountable walls. At the same time that we are all connected, we are watching the debate dies. And without debate, there is no democracy, you cannot reach a place of common interest. We have a lot to think about, what to invent and what to review in order to get out of this web of immobility that holds us. Perhaps the only thing that unites us, regardless of values and political position, is that we want a different world from the one we have now. We all have the feeling that “something didn't work out” and that we need to fix it. I believe that everyone today with food on the table has the duty to put their head on thinking about a new world, one that accommodates diversity, one that is more free and fair, more egalitarian and, above all, more ecological. How are we going to do it? I have no idea. But if we don't start debating and thinking now, it won't happen in the future. We need to stop falling into the trap of re-discussing ideas from 100 years ago and start looking ahead. We need to bury the 20th century in order to enter the 21st century definitively.

RT: You are also scheduled for the original series “Evil Secret”, which is slowly return to filming. How has adaptation been at work in the midst of a pandemic? And taking advantage of the opportunity, how is your character [in the series], personality, behavior?
TM: My character is a criminal lawyer who gets involved with the forensic psychiatrist plays by Sergio Guizé. I can't give spoliers (laughs) but I hope to be able to start filming soon.
RT: Recently, the psychoanalyst Contardo Calligaris said that relations will be cleaner and more truthful among people in the post-pandemic period. What is your perception of the post-pandemic world? Do you already notice the change in the people around you?
TM: I believe that we still cannot measure the impact of all this change in our relationships, but I believe that the imminence of death always brings a lot of learning. At least I am on this path, of continuing to foster relationships of true exchange, of honesty and I have less and less patience for social masks. I hope that this is a trend and that we can increasingly live in authenticity.
RT: Taina, we would like to know a little more about the book you intend to write talking about motherhood. As it is a very specific topic, we would like to understand what the main approach you intend to take, and also how the idea came about? What is the name of the book and if it has a release date? Are you writing alone?
TM: This book emerged from the invitation of Companhia das Letras to write about the topic after a text I published in the newspaper “O Globo”. It is the result of a dialogue with Marcos Piangers about parenting in this changing world, about what it was like for us to be a son and now what it feels like to be a mother of a boy and a father of girls. It is a kind of philosophical, unassuming conversation but with very confessional moments of exchange. We plan to launch by the end of the year. It is late because of the demands of the pandemic, or rather, of our own parenting at that moment without school and without help.
RT: You recommended a documentary: “The Social Dilemma” that talks about artificial intelligence and the algorithm. But I wanted to understand how you do to keep mental health balanced and away from social networks, in a world where posting more and more has become essential in the lives of many people. How do you control these longings that come many times, without us noticing?
TM: I can say that today, despite being aware of the problem, I am totally immersed in it. And I wonder if I will ever have my brain and my time back. We have been captured, our professions and networks depend on it now, our entire generation is in the networks. The “I think, therefore I am”, became “I post, therefore I am”. Who has never experienced the strange sensation of living something very special and feels obliged to “leave” the moment to post, why not register there on the networks it seems that the moment did not even exist? Anyway, I hope that we will wake up and at least fight for the regulation of this trillion-dollar technology industry, so that we are not completely dominated by it. Otherwise, we will see democracy giving complete space to the supremacy of the industry and that is scary. I believe that it is possible to maneuver this transatlantic and change this route, strengthening and reaffirming the control institutions. There is a lot of shade, but there is also a lot of light in the technologies. Today I can attend a class by an indigenous leader directly from a village in Acre, something that would have been impossible years ago. So I root for ethics.

RT: You said that when the vaccine comes out, the first thing you will do is take your son to visit the Nova Esperança village of the Yawanawas, it is sad to see everything that is happening with the forests, with the animals and with the indegenous. But do you believe that there will be time for salvation as government officials are not committed to resolving these issues?
TM: There has to be time. But we have to be more active, as civil society, to fight for what  is right for us, which is a livable world. And protecting the indigenous is also self-protection, since they are the guardians of the forest that sustains the biochemical balance so that life on Earth is still possible. Not only that, they also have an ancestral knowledge of survival and harmony with the environment that we urgently need to recover. The decolonization of our thinking is fundamental to our own survival. The indigenous people teach us to "think outside the box" and I think that today they produce the most contemporary thinking of all, so whenever I can I hear what they have to say. I realize that they bring a different logic of existence, much more connected to the essence of life much more integrated with everything that exists and with the true “key to happiness” that capitalism wants so much to sell and cannot achieve, bringing only insatiability of desires. I am sad because we are privileged in Brazil for having all this wealth of cultural diversity in the country, which wants and has a lot to teach us, but we do not value it. We still do not see our true gold, which is the power of our original peoples and their way of life. We cannot let capitalism destroy our greatest wealth. We need to act and it is now.

It Ain’t Satsuzai… But Then Again - by Jay Drew
Tumblr media
The phrase “What’s in a name?” gets bandied about, usually in regard with ancestry or history, if you will.  Does the surname Smith indicate that somewhere in your family tree there was a blacksmith – undoubtedly toiling under a spreading chestnut tree?  The name game gets far more convoluted when we throw in a foreign language.  At Camp Kodenkan in 1978 Professor Fisher provided me and others a recipe for Okazaki Liniment.  No name other than Okazaki Liniment was offered at the time.  Somewhere, the grapevine hinted, there was another name for the massage oil – Satsuzai.  Or was it Satsusai with an “s” rather than a “z?”  Eric Pietrelli’s seminal paper on the subject gave a small pause for confusion with the artistic font he used on his cover sheet.  Was the 6th character a “z” or an “s?”  Well it didn’t match the two other characters that looked like an “s” so it must be a “z.”  Once you got into the paper and read the content, it was settled – it was a “z.”  We now had a far more interesting name than liniment, we had SATSUZAI, and it was our secret sauce for massages!
But there was a small problem.  When some upper rank members of the AJJF took a class from Sensei Keith Okazaki he informed them that the Okazaki family never used the name satsuzai, they called it “Bug Juice.”  So where did the name originate?
I had the advantage of starting this investigation in 2019 that others did not – the  world wide web.  When you plug satsuzai into search engines, your results pretty much end up with links to AJJF / Danzan Ryu pages that discuss Okazaki liniment, but you generally don’t find links outside of that world.  I did, however, get a hit on a scanned document from the War Department, dated 1945 (TM 3-48 1).  This was a listing of Japanese to English words.  I downloaded the document and did a search for satsuzai. After a few moments of CPU cycles, the screen showed the highlighted word satsuzai with the word liniment after it.  Huzzah, I had found a magic secret decoder ring.  But I was curious as to why the American military would know this, but seemingly no one else?  And then I notice that I was in the “T” section of this ad hoc dictionary and that there were two letters preceding the highlighted satsuzai, they were “t” and “o.”  The word in the dictionary was not satsuzai, it was tosatsuzai.
Plugging tosatsuzai into the web search engines now gave hits in Japanese to English dictionaries and behold the translations they offered – liniment.  But one hit was more interesting than the others: “An English-Japanese Dictionary of the Spoken Language,” available on Google books.  The first edition was compiled by Ernest Mason Satow and Ishibashi Maskata, in 1875. The online version is the 3rd edition, dated 1904.  As the title suggests, it lists English words first and then the Japanese equivalent.  In this document, “satsuzai” is found twice, once as satsuzai and once as tosatsuzai.  In this dictionary liniment is translated to satsuzai.  It’s the first occurrence encountered in this dictionary that is quite interesting.  That first instance is found as tosatsuzai and the English word linked to tosatsuzai is embrocation.  The illuminating thing is the definition of the word embrocation:
“the liquid or lotion with which an affected part is rubbed or washed; a kind of liniment.”
Thus, tosatsuzai is not just some liniment, it’s a special type of liniment for rubbing!
The kanji in this dictionary is a scanned document. The resolution of the kanji is too poor to make a definitive comparison to modern Japanese-English dictionaries.
I did have a little fun with this newly found morsel of knowledge.  At the 2020 AJJF National Convention I approached Professor George Arrington – a great researcher of everything Danzan Ryu and I mentioned the word satsuzai.  George’s quick (and possibly correct) response was “no such word.”  I then put on my Morpheus overcoat and said “What if I told you there was a word called tosatsuzai?”  He immediately brought forth modern technology to bear on the matter – he searched the web via his phone.  His audible response of his search result is not suitable for this paper.  Suffice to say he was bemused.  So where did satsuzai come from?
I consulted with my brother in law, who is a translator in Japan, and he suggested that perhaps some folks were hearing it incorrectly and writing down what they heard, or that satsuzai – tosatsuzai was akin to y’all and you all, a contraction.
But then again…
I have found the word satsuzai associated with the word liniment in a few places apart from the Danzan world.  The War Department published two technical manuals TM 30-481 and TM 30-482 and you will find satsuzai (without the “to” prefix). It is listed as liniment on page 604 of TM 30-482 and with various combinations such as sekken satsuzai (soap liniment), on page 622.  The trouble here is that it also lists satsu as liniment on page 603.  A couple of the entries have kanji associated with the listing, but the scanned documents do not provide enough detail to render them above chicken scratching.  Bear in mind that it was an army document that led me to pursue the word tosatsuzai as the Japanese word for liniment.  Neither TM 30-481 or TM 30-482 lists tosatsuzai.
A respected dictionary “The Original Modern Reader’s Japanese-English Character Dictionary,” by Andrew Nathaniel Nelson, does list satsuzai as liniment on page 453 and the kanji is readable and it matches what is found on online kanji dictionaries.  And if one believes that Andrew Nelson’s work is credible (it is), satsuzai is a legitimate word.  For added confusion though, on page 277 of his work you will find tomatsuzai, which is defined as liniment-ointment on the same page you find tosatsuzai as liniment.
Since Keith Okazaki stated that the family did not use the word satsuzai, you couldn’t say it was a private/proprietary name unknown to the outside world.  Yet   modern online dictionaries do not seem to recognize the word satsuzai.  The War Department recognized both tosatsuzai and satsuzai, depending on which publication.  A respected published dictionary recognizes both satsuzai and tosatsuza,i as does a turn of the century (1904) dictionary.
Perhaps satsuzai was a colloquial term that fell into disfavor, or tosatsuzai has a more pedigreed history that those who write online dictionaries prefer.  I do say that tosatsuzai’s translation to embrocation has an old-time sophistication, with which I have become enamored.
How did we in the Danzan community start using the name Satsuzai?  It may simply be someone asked, “How do you say liniment in Japanese?”
What do I now label my bottles of embrocation?  Bug Juice.  It has fewer letters than Okazaki Liniment or Tosatsuzai and chews up less tape on my P-Touch labeler.  If y’all come up to me and say Satsuzai I might say you’re 2/3rds there or I might let it go.  After all, I said it for over 40 years and old habits are hard to break.
What should you call it?  I say dealer’s choice.  I am reminded of what my father once told me: “Call me anything you want except Late for Dinner”.
For some more fun, sometime ask me about how to make Okazaki Liniment / Bug Juice / Tosatsuzai / Satsuzai.  I know of 4 different recipes and when I mix it, I do a substitution from what I was originally taught.  That makes it five different ways that I know on how to make it.

For most of us the perfect life would include:
health
happiness
prosperity
quality time with loved ones
and making a significant difference in the world
What if there was an opportunity that would allow you to have all of these things, all at the same time?
The company we are about to reveal provides the product, the plan and the support to make that happen.
What would it mean to you and your family if you had been an early partner with Microsoft, Google, Amazon or Apple?
One emerging biotech company in Europe may right now be positioned to be a worldwide giant and be a life changer for millions around the world.
This exciting company is headquartered in Berlin, Germany and is now launching worldwide.
Why is your timing perfect?
In a world filled with the most sophisticated intelligence and technology mankind has ever seen, way too many people are unhealthy obese and aging way too fast!
There has never been a time in history where more money has been spent on healthcare
and at the same time more people than ever suffer needlessly.
At last there is a breakthrough solution to help change this picture.
Behind the company is a Who’s Who of business success:
In 1991, Christian Halper, the company's co-founder, co-developed a software system for the technical analysis of financial data that was the foundation of the legendary SUPERFUND Investment Group, whose success was built on following the hottest trends in the marketplace.
Christian has allocated $100 million exclusively for the development and marketing of this company and its parent company.
The company's dynamic master distributor team has over 40 years of successful industry experience.
This team includes Dirc Zahlmann, Founder and CEO of Zahlmann Consulting,
who has developed and guided Fortune 500 companies.
He has also been the leading corporate executive behind some industry giants
and was President of a $600 million a year direct sales company.
The team also includes Carsten Lange who has generated 100's of millions in industry sales
as both a master distributor and top producer.
The inventor and owner of this breakthrough technology, Marcus Schmieke, a world renowned quantum physicist,
has created a unique and breakthrough “Wearable Health Technology”.
What is the product?
#1
The Device:
It is a unique micro-current frequency device that resonates through the body and calculates the encrypted data in the cloud and then sends the user customized frequencies.
Based on over a decade of experience with over 2,500 doctors and therapists and over 500,000 users, this cutting edge product uses 140 specific programs spanning 144,000 frequencies, all built to enhance every area of your life and positively impact the lives of hundreds of millions.
#2
The Watch:
This breakthrough device ascertains your health status by measuring and analyzing the body function
then correlates with the device to provide the right frequencies to enhance your life and health.
It can do everything most other health/exercise watches can do AND MORE. It will measure your health and will advise you on which frequencies are good for you now.
While the watch provides the right programs/solutions to your device, it will also advise you about the nutrition (vitamins, minerals) your body needs. Our new Digital Nutrition App sends frequencies through the device that can help your body get the nutrition you require through the food you consume.
Why is frequency important?
Frequency is everywhere in life, in everything, in song, light, sound and micro currents.
For example, the right frequencies can increase ATP production. ATP is considered to be the energy currency of life.
It is the high energy molecule that stores the energy we need to do just about everything we do.
Body cells lose energy over time. With proper frequencies body cells can increase energy levels and repair damage in the body. Frequencies can bring back energy to cells and help the body and organs function more effectively.
Frequencies have been shown to enhance:
Energy, Strength, Fitness, Balance, Mood, Learning, Sleep, Beauty, Immune response, and so much more.
Frequencies have also been shown to assist with discomfort and improve health conditions.
How does it work?
The transport of matter into and out of the cell occurs through a somewhat magnetically controlled valve mechanism.
The voltage potential, i.e., the difference between the voltage inside the cell and the voltage between the cells, is responsible for healthy (physiological) cell metabolism.
This mechanism explains why frequencies can be applied for many different purposes and disorders.
Is this a new technology?
Humanity has been aware of how outside stimulation can affect the mind long before recorded history. We can share that same awareness by sitting around a campfire. Watching the flickering flames creates a soothing, calming sensation within the mind.
This same effect is also experienced with rhythmic drum-beats. The continuous, repetitive beats tend to generate a calming effect, while faster repetitions create a more energetic sensation. Within the last 90 years, scientists have developed this awareness into highly beneficial instrumentation.
Although scientists have known that flickering light and audio beats effect our frame of mind, they were initially unable to prove how that interaction existed.
In 1924 Hans Berger, a German psychiatrist, labeled the alpha frequency and published wavy line pictures showing electrical activity of the human brain which led to the development of the new science of electroencephalography.
Later in the 1920’s and 1930’s new technology was developed which passed electromagnetic frequencies through the body.
This research continued until in the 1940’s several researchers, including W. Gray Walter, utilized powerful electronic strobes with new versions of EEG instrumentation to alter brainwave activity, producing states of profound relaxation and imagery. In 1949, brainwave signals were brought to the screen with the invention of the Tuposcope. This breakthrough allowed the tracking of brain-wave patterns (Beta, Alpha, Theta and Delta). Within five years, hundreds of hospitals were compiling EEG’s.
Picture a series of peaks and valleys, much like the skyline of a mountain range. When you are asleep, in Delta, those peaks and valleys are at both their highest and lowest points and appear to be spread out. As you gradually awaken and become more alert, progressing from Theta into Alpha, the peaks and valleys begin to shrink in size and are spaced closer together. Then when you are in your normal waking state, Beta, this “mountain range” is at its smallest level, with very little space separating the peaks from the valleys.
In the 1950’s and 1960’s, research on Zen and Yoga meditators showed a predominance of alpha and theta waves during meditation. These findings were made through the data collected by researchers including M.A. Wanger of the University of California at Los Angeles; B.K. Bagchi of the University of Michigan School of Medicine; and B.K. Anand of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences in New Delhi (Ditson-Sommer 1995).
In the 1980’s light and sound were explored more deeply. Today we have expensive micro-current devices priced between $20,000 to $50,000 and more. 0ur device has now consolidated this technology into a breakthrough and more effective small wearable device priced from $470 to $2,300.
Precise natural frequencies are the keys to unlock all the doors to optimal health and a vibrant life. While just a single key cannot unlock all the doors, we believe our device, using 0PEF (oscillating pulsed electric fields), stands alone as a breakthrough device that contains all the keys to unlock anything.
How hot is this trend?
From Steve Jobs to Bill Gates, world business leaders have predicted that “Wearable Health Technology” will be one of the hottest mega-billion dollar trends.
While Apple (TM) has an excellent watch that ascertains limited health status, they do not have this new, unique, proprietary technology which customizes the frequency programs to promote optimal health and recovery.
It will take at least 5 years for any competitor to even come close (giving us a 5 year advantage).
By that time we will have already seized the largest share of the global marketplace.
What about the future?
We will continue to be the global innovator
as our initial product offering is just the beginning of an avalanche of life changing biotech products.
What is your potential?
Our objective in the next five years is to have our device in 100 million households.

Why Freight Management is Important? Freight Management FAQS
Without proper freight management, most businesses would go out of business rather quickly. Here is a comprehensive list of the most common questions we come across regarding freight management.
Freight Management FAQ
Question: What is freight management?
Answer: Freight management is the procedure of efficiently and also tactically moving freight throughout a network from its point of origin to its desired location making use of different methods of transportation, intermediaries, as well as technologies. The procedure employs logistics and also supply chain knowledge, physical properties such as trucks, warehouses as well as stockrooms, and technology to move freight effectively and affordably.
Question: What methods of transportation do freight managers utilize?
Answer: Freight managers ship cargo by air, rail, roadway, as well as water. Combinations of these methods typically referred to as intermodal transportation, are also used to provide ideal logistics as well as delivery solutions. Within the United States, approximately 70% of freight is delivered by commercial trucks.
Question: Why has freight management become such a vital element of business?
Answer: The capacity to supply freight promptly to the best location, in the ideal quantity, damage-free, and at the most affordable feasible price, has actually constantly been critically essential to services. In today’s competitive atmosphere, this capacity is more important than ever as a result of aspects such as leaner shipper stocks, just-in-time manufacturing, increasing warehousing and labor costs, tighter delivery windows, and also customer gratification assumptions driven by eCommerce.
Question: What’s the difference between freight management and logistics management?
Answer: Many people, specifically those that are not a component of the Supply Chain, will certainly consider the terminologies Freight Management and Logistics Management to be equivalent. Nevertheless, we believe the meanings of each terminology, in addition to the collection of activities that we have actually detailed, show that there is a crystal clear difference. Logistics Management is a more overarching, all-inclusive terminology. The range of Logistics Management tasks is huge and can deal with a lot of tasks and also stakeholders. However, it is comprehensive of Freight, or Transportation, Management. Freight Management is, therefore, a subset of Logistics Management. It is in no way decreased in terms of relevance, nonetheless. Without Freight Management, and all of the individuals that make it occur, there is no capability for Logistics Management to function and fulfill its goals.
Question: What are the various road transportation alternatives?
Answer: Ground transportation comes in numerous varieties but typical options for carriers are full truckload (TL or sometimes FL), less-than-truckload (LTL), and parcel. In TL transportation a shipment fills up an entire semi-truck trailer, whereas LTL shipments just partially load a semi-trailer and also can be combined with other various other appropriate freight to compose a full load. Parcel describes the transportation of tiny as well as mid-size package units. Each option needs a different freight management strategy.
Question: Visibility is a typical supply chain term. What is it?
Answer: Supply chain visibility is essentially the capacity to track the condition and place of parts, parts, and also items as they relocate from origin to destination. It’s tough to overstate the relevance of supply chain visibility. It establishes superb customer support and also allows companies to drive cost out of supply chains by, for instance, preparing for and also avoiding functional disruptions.
Question: What are the various freight management options through truck?
Answer: The three main freight management choices by truck are: private carriage, usual carriage, as well as devoted agreement carriage. Shippers that pick private carriage elect to handle their very own trucks and also drivers. In common carriage, freight is moved by multiple third-party trucking carriers on an as-needed and also transactional basis. Dedicated contract carriage (DCC), a significantly preferred approach, offers the same deal with capacity and control as personal carriage yet carriers fully contract out the operation and management of their fleet to a third-party logistics carrier (3PL) or lead logistics carriers (LLP). In the circumstances of DCC, the 3PL runs and keeps the truck fleet, employs as well as handles the drivers, as well as ensures the safe, on-time delivery in accordance with the carrier’s requirements.
Question: Transparency is one more commonly utilized supply chain term. What is it, as well as just how does it vary from visibility?
Answer: While visibility covers the surveillance of systems moving via supply chains, transparency describes just how companies share their freight information with other trading companions in the supply chain. This might consist of producers, suppliers, trucking carriers, 3PLs, upstream and also downstream vendors, freight brokers, freight forwarders, regulatory authorities, and even clients themselves. The principle of transparency within the supply chain ensures the smooth, effective hand-offs as well as shared knowledge of everyone functioning within a logistics network. Transparency has actually come to be specifically essential in consumer-facing markets such as retail, CPG or food where shipping has actually become ever before more complex and customers are demanding more information right into the products they purchase. The development of fads like blockchain is clear proof of a higher desire for transparency.
Question: Just how can a carrier keep high levels of visibility as well as transparency?
Answer: Modern technology is an important piece of visibility as well as the transparency puzzle. 3PLs and LLPs use tools such as transportation management systems to track and also trace the activity of freight and disseminate this information to accredited parties as swiftly as feasible. Leading 3PLs and LLPs also use advanced tools such as artificial intelligence to find anomalies in freight networks and also inform carriers of potential interruptions or hold-ups.
Question: Exactly How is Internet of Things innovation used in freight management?
Answer: Internet of Things (IoT) is the term used to explain modern technology that attaches day-to-day challenge the internet using picking up devices. Products and also components moving through supply chains as well as assets such as trucks can be tracked utilizing IoT-based noticing systems. These systems offer businesses real-time or near real-time location data and also condition updates such as the temperature of loads.
Question: What is a transportation management system (TMS)?
Answer: A transportation management system (TMS) is a system for managing freight and also freight flows. One of the most essential devices in the logistics tool kit, TMS technology has evolved swiftly over the last years. Modern systems sustain day-to-day freight operations as well as strategic decision-making through innovative analytics.
Question: What are spot market rates in trucking?
Answer: Spot market rates are one-off rates priced estimate by truck carriers to carry a specific load or loads. Unlike agreement freight rates which are fixed according to a pre-negotiated agreement between shipper and carrier, spot market rates vary. Making use of the spot market to relocate freight is usually the more expensive option. Keeping comprehensive transmitting overviews is one way to decrease a shipper’s dependence right away market.
Question: What is a directing guide?
Answer: A directing guide is a guide to which carrier or carriers a business picks to move its freight. Routing guides have been available in numerous forms but normally consist of favored carriers that align with the shipper’s logistics requirements.
Question: What are accessorials?
Answer: Freight accessorial costs are costs sustained outside of regular load pickup and delivery tasks. Instances include charges for packing or unloading freight or a cost imposed by a carrier for unplanned hold-ups at a loading dock. These extra costs can considerably pump up logistics costs.
Question: Just how can a freight management companion save time and money for carrier customers?
Answer: There are various ways in which freight management companions provide considerable time and rate savings. For example, leading 3PLs as well as LLPs help shippers to work out one of the most competitive freight rates to decrease the likelihood of pricey supply chain disturbances, as well as to make sure that freight networks run to maximum efficiency.
Question: What are preferred carriers?
Answer: Trucking companies typically favor to do company with firms that are effective, monetarily sound, and highly joint generally called favored shippers. The award equates right into a more competitive advantage. For example, a recommended carrier is more likely to find carriers to haul its freight during durations when lugging ability is in short supply. There are various methods to become a preferred shipper. One is to keep loading/unloading delays to a minimum (see accessorials above).
Question: What should I seek when picking a freight management partner?
Answer: It is critically important that shippers pick a freight management companion that has the ideal degree of logistics knowledge and also is compatible both culturally and organizationally. Listed below are some noteworthy warnings:
Does the 3PL have a lengthy and effective performance history of managing various kinds of freight?
How receptive is the 3PL to market adjustments and fads as well as supply chain interruptions?
What sources does the 3PL offer in regards to framework, technology, and employees?
Does the 3PL have solid visibility in numerous markets? Cross-industry proficiency is extremely essential in today’s extremely competitive logistics market.
Is the 3PL an innovator in regards to the logistics solutions it has executed and also the innovation it deploys?
Can the 3PL program stay ahead of the technology curve?
Is the 3PL economically sound as well as well-insured?
Does the 3PL have a strong track record as well as brand name in the market?
As one of the top 3rd party logistics providers (3PL), Fleet Concepts’ team draws upon half a century of experience aiding market-leading shippers to succeed with safe, on-time as well as effective deliveries. Our freight management specialists create customized freight management solutions to ideally meet the particular demands of your business, whether that is improving service levels, driving down costs, boosting functional efficiency or simply driving improvements, or some mix of these usual requirements.

Stackin’ Stickers: Snowboard Agents
As published in King Snow - 11.2 - October 1st, 2019
This article’s first priority is to try and explain the world of snowboard sponsorship and the agent’s role within it. This will be done by exploring what an agent is, who needs an agent, and how agents might be changing snowboarding. I’ll also discuss the wealth gap between top-tier pros and the average sponsored snowboarder, and how professional snowboard sponsorship has changed over the years. In order to understand all of this, I first approached Superheroes Management, i.e., an agency, interviewing Jaimeson Keegan. Jaimeson is the owner of Superheroes and former head of sports, entertainment, and marketing for Red Bull. Jamieson is currently the agent for Devun Walsh, Darcy Sharpe, Mikey Rencz, Seb Toots, Maria Thompson, Tyler Nicholson, Mons Røisland, Zoi Sadowski Synnott, and many others. We also chatted with Jake Kuzyk, who has had a great career despite never having an agent represent him.
What is an agent?
An agent is someone who speaks on your behalf. They’ll go out and get you those sponsors you don't have, or they’ll maximise the support you’re currently getting. An agent sets up contracts, keep you informed, and talks business with the business people. They cross the T’s and dot the I’s. But not only that, an agent will act as the middle person between you and your sponsors. They will negotiate money and travel budgets for you. They will make sure that you are being compensated fairly, and that your interests are being heard. In return, however, an agent takes a cut, maybe 10% or 15%, whatever was negotiated before the agent started working for you. That percent keeps the agent working for you. His or her salary is dependent on yours. And, in the best situations, it’s a symbiotic relationship where both parties are benefiting.
Having an agent seems like a pretty awesome thing. The general consensus is that having an agent helps you focus on snowboarding, and not business. When talking with Mikey Rencz he said, “I was getting to a point where the business side was getting overwhelming and I was kinda young, and didn’t wanna deal with it.” Seb and Darcy said something similar.
Darcy said, “I could focus on snowboarding and being myself and not jammin up any creativity I got going on.” And Mr. Toutant said, “I think it is really important because at some point you are focusing on your snowboarding and people wanna sign you up, and you dont wanna get to stressed out by all that bullshit. You wanna focus on your riding.”
Having an agent allows you to narrow your focus and not get lost in the numbers and the search for sponsors. An agent can also help you determine your monetary value, as Devun Walsh said, in a very earnest way, “sometimes I feel like you don't know your full worth, so it’s better to have someone else tell the company what you’re worth.” Asking for money is hard, especially when it’s for doing something as fun as snowboarding. It’s weird to think that slapping some petex to your feet and burning down a hill can be profitable. When thinking about this, Darcy said he thought getting an agent was great because he never really knew how to say, “hey, I’m worth money in snowboarding. That was a ridiculous idea to me as a kid.”
Apart from this, an agent is someone who can also translate your value to sponsors. Mikey gave me an example where he said, “Imagine if someone approached me for a commercial or something, and said we’re gunna give you $5000 for the day.” That sounds like a great deal, right? And Mikey would have accepted it too. But, Rencz explained that that’s where Jaimeson steps in, “Jamison would then ask ‘what’s it for?’ and ‘what’s the reach?’ and after that he’d be like, no you’re gunna give him $20,000 for the day.” That’s a huge boost in salary, all because someone knew what the ask was worth. The price a rider is willing to do something for isn’t always the right price. An agent can bridge the gap between rider and businesses making sure the rider does not get taken advantage of, or, isn't mistakenly undervalued. During our interview, Jaimeson disclosed that the first goal that is set after signing with Superheroes agency is to get that rider 100k a year in sponsorship dollars, “a living wage,” as he put it.
However, there is also Jake Kuzyk, an all-star rail rider, who has never had an agent in his corner, which, given what I just said, you might think is kinda nuts. But, Jake views it differently. Jake said that he believes that an agent could actually hurt his career. He says, “Based on what [I] do and who [I am], it’s almost not smart to have an agent. I think having an agent would hurt me. All the sponsors that I have, it’s like a friendship. It’s a real connection. I think I’d be in a worse spot financially and with longevity as far as my brands go.” A justifiable concern for anyone who has spent a lot of time building relationships with his or her brands.
Who is an Agent for?
If not all riders feel like an agent is good for them and their career, then who is an agent for? According to Jake, “I think unless there is high demand and you are one of those people who are willing to run on high expectation, and do well under pressure, then an agent is kinda good. But for me, I’ve always wanted to do things at my own pace and in my own way.” A valid point. If you’re that type A personality who works well under pressure, all the power to you to meet those demands put on you. Money can dictate expectations, creating performance goals and obligations that are not for everyone. But, there are still guys like Rencz who have agents, and are not running on that type A personality. So what’s different about Mikey? When asked, he said, “there used to be a lot more interest in the filming side, and also there was a lot more going on for people who filmed for videos and shot for magazines, even three years ago.” I interpret this as Mikey saying that these days there is not as much money for people who film video parts, and that maybe the need for the average video part guy to have an agent isn’t as big as it once was. However, that’s not what Seb thinks. Seb said that, “when I hear people say that an agent is only good for people who make a lot of money, I think that’s wrong. Agents are there to help you sign a bigger deal and get more opportunities.” So, Seb thinks that you should have an agent if you are good enough to have one, which makes sense. Why wouldn’t you like a little extra coin? However, Rencz also speculates that some “team managers don't really wanna deal with [an] agent,” meaning that some TMs want to deal directly with the rider, not the middle man. This could be for two reasons. The first being that maybe the TM does not want to be pressured into paying his or her athletes more when times are tight, even though the athlete deserves it - which is a sad reality. Or, two, it could be because some TMs also value the relationship with the rider, and don't want a middle man to answer to. Either way, we’re kinda back at the point that Jake made about an agent potentially hurting the career he wants. So, maybe an agent isn't for everyone, especially if you film video parts and want a relationship with your sponsor? Well, that’s not entirely true either. When talking to Jamieson about this, he said that he thinks “there is actually a big appetite out there specifically for riders that do not compete. I know brands that when I call them and go, ‘hey, I got someone you’d be interested in,’ they say, ‘oh yeah, we would be, but call us when he or she stops competing.’”
So, who is an agent for? I don’t entirely know. But I can ambiguously say that an agent works best when there is a symbiotic relationship, a win-win, between rider and agent.
That said, there is one obvious group of snowboarders that an agent seems uncontroversially good for, and that is the all-stars. Or, as Jaimeson calls them, “the A listers.” He says, “If you're a true A lister, your earning potential is, I dunno, anywhere between $500,000 and up. The most bad ass [riders] in our spaces earn a tremendous amount. Those are the one percenters, if you will.” These are the snowboarders who come to people’s minds first, guys like Mark McMorris, Seb Toots, Sage Kotsenburg, Ståle Sandbech, Torstein Horgmo, and others. You can probably imagine the others. These people just have too many other things going on to worry about dealing with contract renewals and bonuses and their financials in general. Their priority is performing, performing for themselves and performing for the stickers on their board, that’s it. They’ve got big goals and big money to answer to. When you’ve struck the perfect marketable mixture of talent, personality, and fan following, the sky's the limit.
How might agents be changing the industry?
Agents are great at getting riders non-endemic sponsorships, sponsors like BMW, Virgin Wireless, Audi, and other brands who have nothing to do with snowboarding, but want to be associated with snowboarders. These brands know that there is a market value attached to the top names in snowboarding, and that putting money into that athlete could yield a return for them in brand association and logo recognition. So they do it, they invest. Which is okay to some degree, I think. Non-endemic support allows boarders to put more money into what they love doing. These brands allow riders to travel, get proper physio, feed themselves, save for the future, etc.. They also put money into the sport, giving snowboarding events the means to be broadcast around the globe, gaining exposure for snowboarding and bringing in money. This money can then be put back into the endemic industry through brands, resorts, and media outlets, benefiting everyone.
However, it is also possible to see how this could change snowboarding in a negative way. As Rencz said, “if you look at the contest riders with really weird sponsors, you’re like, ‘OoOoOo, that guys got an agent for sure,’ because [the rider] is not finding those sponsors, and the [sponsors] aren't hitting them up. You know? It’s like specifically sought out through an agency...” So the “snowboarder” doesn’t have any sponsors from a snowboard company. And while that’s more common place within mainstream professional sport, it’s a weird phenomenon in life-style snowboarding, which maybe shouldn’t happening. But why does it? Well, probably because of the money. And if that is the case, what does that mean? In other words, what does it mean when riders start having more non-endemic sponsors than endemic sponsors? Does it mean that non-endemic brands could start having more influence over the direction of snowboarding than snowboard companies? Has this already been happening? I honestly don't know the answers to these questions. But, I think questions like this are important to think about. Not thinking about them gets us to the premise for the movie Idiocracy, which is a movie set in the future where brands and big money dictate everything. It’s a future where Gatorade-esque drinks water farmers fields because Gatorade is, quote-unquote, “better than water.”
The Wealth Gap.
As many of the riders interviewed in this article have said, one interesting phenomena of contemporary snowboarding is that the wealth gap is growing. That is, there are a few athletes making a lot of money and many athletes making less. The group of riders making more money are the group of A listers that Jamieson brought up earlier. They are akin to the 1%. And then there's everyone else. A big middle class of boarders who are really good, but only receive a pair of pants and some beanies at the start of the year. This growing wealth gap is interesting because it mimics our current economy, but maybe it’s not unexpected, considering that the snowboard world is just a microcosm of the world at large. When talking about this with Jamieson, he said, “I don't think action sports are insulated from what is happening in society. I think a lot of people are disappointed. They feel confident in what they are achieving, and it’s more difficult for them to get rewarded for it.” I guess it isn’t a coincidence that the “glory days” of the prosperous professional snowboarder happened when North America was financially stable, with a strong middle class economy. Devun also expressed his amazement for what snowboarders will do for such little money, saying, “I feel like there are kids who are willing to kill themselves on rails for like 30-grand a year. There is no way, back in the day, that people would be willing to risk their neck for that.”
Being a Professional Snowboarder
There is no doubt that being a professional snowboarder has changed in the last 10 years, especially within contest riding. The amount of pressure and obligation has increased, everyone in this article agreed with that, to some degree. Devun did say that “before you had to kill yourself all year to make [a] video part and now it just kinda comes out when they feel like it . . . apart from some of the videos.” But other than that, everyone agreed that being a pro is difficult. Seb said, “[what I would say] has really changed is snowboarding became so much harder to make it at a pro level, if you're getting drunk all the time and not really taking care of your body, it is definitely harder to keep up.” Darcy acknowledged that there are so many good snowboarders on Instagram that you need to stay on top of your game, whereas before, if you were a part of the chosen few, everyone waited for your part, and whoever else was good was rarely seen.
In the past, the lack of accessibility also allowed for us to know who was pro and who wasn’t. We knew pros had promodels, whether it was a piece of outerwear or a board. That just doesn't seem to happen as much. The lines are blurred because the money is limited and the talent pool is limitless. Even companies don't really seem too concerned about the pro label. If you go to Rome’s website, LNP is still listed as one of their pros. But he barely snowboards anymore and has a full time career as a heavy-duty mechanic.
While interviewing Seb, this was one of the reasons he thinks there is less money in the industry. He said, “for snowboarding you don't always know who is a pro and who is an amateur, which is something huge and something we need to change. . . When it is built properly, it’s easier for a big company to invest in the sport.” He went on to explain that if you want to be a certain type of rider, there should be a clear way to achieve that.
His points are good, they absolutely make sense as far as growth and money goes. I mean, making it clear to people how snowboarding works is great for sponsors. It allows sponsors outside of snowboarding to know who they are getting behind. It can provide an objective value for a snowboarder. But what about for guys like Jake who aren't into that structure? When talking about structure, Jake said that it’s one of the reasons he does not have an agent. He said that, “I just always wanted to have control over what I did. I’ve always wanted to be very involved with all the projects I’ve worked on. . . “I don’t ‘yes man’ things, and do random stuff that I don’t really believe in.” With more structure, you can lose diversity, you can lose guys like Jake, making pro status only attainable to a certain type of person, which is an issue snowboarding is already dealing with, considering how it is generally dominated by wealthy, white males. So, it’s hard. Snowboarding sponsorship is a unique and ever evolving place that can be difficult for professionals, AMs, industry folk, and everyone to exist within, happily. It’s a complex matrix with many parts, understanding it is hard. I tried to show you a little of the objective and the subject side of it, but when it comes down to it, there is no right information or algorithm when trying to understand it, and maybe there shouldn't be.

Should You Withdraw from the September LSAT?
Tumblr media
It’s three days before the September LSAT. This means that the time has come to check one very important thing off your LSAT study plan: the Should I Withdraw?! MeltdownTM.
Spoiler Alert: Probably not. But, like everything in law, it depends.
We have some questions to help guide your decision!
Question: Do you already have an LSAT score on record?
Answer: Regardless of whether your answer is yes or no, you probably should not withdraw from the September LSAT. If you do not have an LSAT score on record, we would suggest sitting for the September exam. A reportable LSAT score is necessary at many schools to even be eligible to apply. If you have a score on record, improving just one point on the LSAT strengthens your application. You may be wondering, “What if my score goes DOWN?!” Contrary to popular belief, a score that is lower than your score already on record will not significantly weaken your application. The main point is that law schools only report your highest LSAT score on record; they are incentivized to not care too much about a score drop!
Question: Have you taken the official digital LSAT before?
Answer: Unless you were one of the lucky few that experienced the joy of the digital LSAT in July, your answer is no. September is the first fully digital LSAT. Why would you not want to take advantage of being one of the few taking the September LSAT? Ok, ok, we get it — may be reasons why you wouldn’t. Here are some reasons why you should, though: although the Blueprint online tests are a great parallel to the digital LSAT, taking the real test can be a bit of a different experience. For starters, you’ll be in an official testing center with other test-takers. Also, you won’t be taking it on your own laptop. Each test taker in your testing center will be receiving a tablet, LSAC stylus, and booklet with 15 pages of LSAC-watermarked scratch paper. By taking the September LSAT, you will get first-hand experience of the digital LSAT. This is guaranteed to help if you need to retake the test in the future.
Question: Have you been studying for the LSAT?
Answer: OK, if you registered for the September LSAT, perhaps needing to humble yourself after a night that was a little bit too fun, and have literally never looked at an LSAT question since paying your $200 … perhaps this is not the test for you. However, if you have studied, let your hard work pay off! Even if you don’t end up scoring exactly where you want to end up, the role of the test is to give you a starting point. Your LSAT journey doesn’t have to end after September 21st! You can still retake the test twice this year. Because you’ve already taken the official real-deal test, it’s implied that you’ll have a leg up in the future.
All in all, we would say there is little benefit to withdrawing, but there are tons of benefits to taking the exam. I mean, consider the resume addition: “Pioneer Test Subject for Digital LSAT.” (Note: We do not actually recommend you add this line to your resume.)
October LSAT registration has passed, and November is filling up … who knows when the next test you will be able to take is? We highly recommend taking advantage of the ultra-exclusive spot you’ve managed to snag for Saturday.
Now, go on and tackle some logic games! Put your logic skills to test with some reasoning! Comprehend what you read! Give yourself a day-off from studying on Friday (please do not “cram” for the test on Friday night), and be prepared to show off your skills on Saturday. Remember, there is always the possibility that everything can work out in your favor! Every question has only one correct answer. We’ve helped you figure out the answer to the Should I Withdraw?! MeltdownTM, and now it’s up to you to find correct answers on Saturday! Good luck — we believe in you.

Meditation: Who do you love and cherish the most? God did not intend for us to be alone, but to be with others. He gives us many opportunities for developing relationships with family, friends, neighbors, and co-workers. Why did Jesus, on this occasion, seem to ignore his own relatives when they pressed to see him? His love and respect for his mother and his relatives was unquestionable. Jesus never lost an opportunity to teach his disciples a spiritual lesson and truth about the kingdom of God. On this occasion when many gathered to hear Jesus he pointed to another higher reality of relationships, namely our relationship with God and with those who belong to God.
What kind of relationship does God want with us?
What is the essence of being a Christian? It is certainly more than doctrine, precepts, and commandments. It is first and foremost a relationship - a relationship of trust, affection, commitment, loyalty, faithfulness, kindness, thoughtfulness, compassion, mercy, helpfulness, encouragement, support, strength, protection, and so many other qualities that bind people together in mutual love and unity. God offers us the greatest of relationships - union of heart, mind, and spirit with himself, the very author and source of love (1 John 4:8,16).
What is the true nature of God's love?
God's love never fails, never forgets, never compromises, never lies, never lets us down nor disappoints us. His love is consistent, unwavering, unconditional, and unstoppable. We may choose to separate ourselves from him, but nothing will make him ignore us, leave us, or treat us unkindly. He will pursue us, love us, and call us to return to him no matter what might stand in the way. It is his nature to love. That is why he created us - to be united with him and to share in his love and unity of persons (1 John 3:1). God is a trinity of persons - Father, Son, and Holy Spirit - and a community of love. That is why Jesus challenged his followers and even his own earthly relatives to recognize that God is the true source of all relationships. God wants all of our relationships to be rooted in his love.
The Lord Jesus offers each one of us a personal relationship with himself
Jesus is God's love incarnate - God's love made visible in human flesh (1 John 4:9-10). That is why Jesus describes himself as the good shepherd who lays down his life for his sheep and the shepherd who seeks out the sheep who have strayed and lost their way. God is like the father who yearns for his prodigal son to return home and then throws a great party for his son when he has a change of heart and comes back (Luke 15:11-32). Jesus offered up his life on the cross for our sake, so that we could be forgiven and restored to unity and friendship with God. It is through Jesus that we become the adopted children of God - his own sons and daughters. That is why Jesus told his disciples that they would have many new friends and family relationships in his kingdom. Whoever does the will of God is a friend of God and a member of his family - his sons and daughters who have been ransomed by the precious blood of Christ.
The Lord wants to transform all of our relationships so we can love as he loves
An early Christian martyr once said that "a Christian's only relatives are the saints" - namely those who have been redeemed by the blood of Christ and adopted as sons and daughters of God. Those who have been baptized into Jesus Christ and who live as his disciples enter into a new family, a family of "saints" here on earth and in heaven. Jesus changes the order of relationships and shows that true kinship is not just a matter of flesh and blood. Our adoption as sons and daughters of God transforms all of our relationships and requires a new order of loyalty to God first and to his kingdom of righteousness and peace. Do you want to grow in love and friendship? Allow God's Holy Spirit to transform your heart, mind, and will to enable you to love freely and generously as he loves.
"Heavenly Father, you are the source of all true friendship and love. In all my relationships, may your love be my constant guide for choosing what is good and for rejecting what is contrary to your will."

FAMILY TREE
“For this reason, I remind you to stir into flame the gift of God bestowed when my hands were laid on you.” —2 Timothy 1:6
How well do you know your Catholic ancestry? Do you realize Timothy and Titus were ordained bishops? (see 2 Tm 1:6) By the laying on of hands, the Apostle Paul commissioned them for evangelistic work. “As for Titus, he is my companion and fellow worker in your behalf” (2 Cor 8:23). This illustrates New Testament-era apostolic succession.
Paul also assigned a precise mission. “My purpose in leaving you in Crete was that you might accomplish what had been left undone, especially the appointment of presbyters in every town” (Ti 1:5). We see the hierarchy at work in the early Church.
Where do we twenty-first century Catholics fit into this lineage? Is it possible your diocesan bishop is a spiritual descendant of St. Timothy or St. Titus? Remember, bishops can only be ordained by bishops through the laying on of hands. This is an unbroken chain since apostolic times. Ponder the amazing possibilities of your Catholic family tree!
In today’s Gospel, Jesus at first glance appears callous toward His family (see Mk 3:32-33). Within context, a deeper truth becomes apparent. Our Lord’s intent is not insolence toward the Blessed Mother. Rather, he takes advantage of a teaching moment. “Whoever does the will of God is brother and sister and mother to Me” (Mk 3:35). Jesus called Paul; Paul ordained Timothy and Titus; we are adopted into the family. In obedience to your bishop, how will you serve your brothers and sisters in Christ?
Prayer:  Lord Jesus, strengthen me to serve.
Promise:  “The Spirit God has given us is no cowardly spirit, but rather one that makes us strong, loving, and wise.” ––2 Tm 1:7
Praise:  “This is why I have sent you Timothy, my beloved and faithful son in the Lord. He will remind you of my ways in Christ, just as I teach them in all the churches” (1 Cor 4:17).

How to Meditate on a Train
Learning to meditate on a train can be a great way to make sure you sneak in a session. Here’s why one writer intentionally takes a long commute so she can stick to her meditation practice.
“Wait, what? Why?” is often the response I get when people discover that I belong to a gym on the Upper East Side, a 45-minute commute—each way—from my Brooklyn home.
It makes no sense.
My neighborhood is chock-full of ways to stay fit, including a pool down the road and a Crunch, SoulCycle, and Orangetheory each less than a mile away. Not to mention, I have the lush green Prospect Park in my backyard, complete with a 3.4-mile paved loop that’s ideal for walking, running, or biking year round, free of charge.

So why exactly do I choose to spend 90 minutes of my day, two to three times a week, on the train to chase an endorphin high? The answer is simple: I use the commute time for my Transcendental Meditation practice.

How I Stick to My Meditation Practice
Transcendental Meditation, or TM, is a mantra-anchored practice brought from India via the late Maharishi Mahesh Yogi (the guy who taught the Beatles) to the U.S. between the 1950s and 1970s. I picked up the popular practice (along with some six million people worldwide) in 2013 as a means to quell my anxiety, which was manifesting in the form of perpetual stomachaches.

After months of taking herbal supplements and getting regular acupuncture with no improvement in my symptoms, I turned to TM, learning the practice from a well-respected teacher at the David Lynch Foundation, a nonprofit founded in 2005 by the renowned film director to help fund TM training for underserved students, veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder, victims of domestic abuse, and a slew of anxious folks, like me.
Within months of working with the wise and wonderful Joanna Pitt, who also teaches lots of celebs, my tummy troubles subsided, and I suddenly had an amazing new tool in my belt for managing stress.

The trouble with my meditation is—much like my workouts—if I don’t plan it, it doesn’t happen. While I wish I could be one of those disciplined practitioners who subscribe to RPM (rise, pee, meditate) first thing in the morning, I always prefer to hit snooze or scroll through Instagram in bed. So, when I started going to TS Fitness, a boutique workout studio run and owned by Noam Tamir, I decided to use 20 minutes of my 45-minute New York City subway commute to disconnect from the outside world (there’s little to no Wifi underground, thankfully), and reconnect within.
Sometimes 20 minutes on the train is all that you need for a meditation practice.
The Art of Meditating on a Train
Meditating on a loud train is not easy, at first. It takes effort to zone out the external and home in on the internal. This is one reason why I love TM. Whenever my mind starts to wander to the conversation next to me or the music playing from the boombox of the subway performers, I come back to my sacred mantra—a personalized, meaningless, one- or two-syllable sound prescribed to me by Pitt—which helps me come back to my breath and calms my mind.
Once I’ve succumbed to the bewitching practice, it almost always helps me enter a state of total rest and relaxation. (In fact, I often return to reality after my 20-minute session half asleep, which, unfortunately, is not a great headspace for high-intensity interval training.)
While TM officially calls for two 20-minute sessions a day, I’m very happy sneaking in two to three 20-minute sessions a week. It might not seem like much, but it does accumulate over time, which means that I still get to enjoy some of the benefits of a consistent practice. Sure, it would be way better if I practiced twice daily. It would also be great if I ate broccoli every day. But let’s be real.
See also The Science Behind Finding Your Mantra and How to Practice It Daily
The good news is, I can make every train ride—not just my commute to the gym—an opportunity to get my TM fix. After a couple of years of TM-ing on the train, I’ve developed a Pavlov’s dogs response to meditating during every ride, even if it’s just 10 minutes. Actually, just yesterday, I only had a seven-minute train ride and I still managed to slip in and out of my practice with ease, enjoying the benefits of a few moments of calm before a client meeting. And I’ve learned that taking advantage of any free moment—whether it’s my train, waiting at a doctor’s office, or sitting on a plane—is one of the best and easiest ways to maintain my practice and reap the rewards.
