i dunno man not to be parasocial but i don’t think i’ll get over this one. anyway here’s my rambly thoughts about the finale as i listen to dance, baby! and consequently cry a little thinking of the aforementioned finale

of course he went alone. of course he did. with his characterization there was no other option for him. of course it was going to end with this. and martin, stupid, loyal martin. of course he would stay with him. im just so damn angry. they could have lived. together. with them, and melanie, and georgie, and basira, and the admiral. but they couldn’t. every choice they have made during the course of this podcast, every bit of characterization revealed, means that they couldn’t live happily ever after.

but they are together. and that’s something.

also the fact that Micheal tells John that he (as in the spiral) lies and thats how John gets Helen in s5 is so 😤 its such a great end and if we get more avatars in the future (im dodging protocol spoilers) especially spiral avatars, though i do hope we get more of the other fears in the main cast, that they are as fun as Micheal and Helen

i dont remember exactly how the finale goes, and im not there yet on my relisten. itll only be the second time ive heard it.

from what i remember i was very disatisfied by the way the ending went. there was never really good justification for john to give up his decision so quickly, even if it was for loving martin. it felt wrong generally. but i think if there was a moment where john realized he had no power to feed everything to the end quicker, that small detail would have made it all the better to me.

thats my thoughts though.

some notes on dates so i have them all in one spot:

- With tmagp its a lot easier to tell when stuff's happening than in tma, where we had to go by live statements only. in protocol, every case is appended with 'today's date', so we can say with precision that episode 1 happened on the 9th of January 2024, episode 2 on the 18th, episode 3 on the 22nd

- Hey, those are around the same dates the episodes aired! Seems like they might be going for a kind of real-time parallel timeline? We'll see if that lasts all 3 seasons, or if they get out of sync when multiple episodes need to cover the same event.

- Chester and Norris appeared "about a year ago", which would be somewhere around December 2022.

- According to RQ's website, the Magnus Institute burned down in 1999, and "almost 25 years ago [from tmagp's timeframe]"

- In tma, the world ended in October 2018. Though there's no canonical timeline for how long it lasted, Jonny said in a Q&A he had imagined about 6 months, and Alex iirc said something like a year, landing mag200 in 2019. The episode itself aired in March 2021.

- None of those dates are anywhere near either the Institute burning down or Chester and Norris appearing, but dimension travel does canonically fuck with timelines. It's not impossible that the events of mag200 are what caused tmagp's weirdness - but it's not a guarantee either.

- Colin and Alice are heavily implied to have already been working at the OIAR for a while by the time Chester, Norris and Augustus appeared, the system dates to the mid-90s according to Alice, and both imply it's always been an incomprehensible mess. So whatever is causing Fr3-d1's weirdness, seems like it's not caused directly by either the Institute burning down or Chester and Norris appearing.

- TMA dates of potential relevancy: Jon was born around 1988, Martin 1988 or 1987, making them a few years older than Sam (16th October 1990, according to the ARG) and presumably Alice, but the right age to have been kids in the Institute in Protocols timeline. Leitners library burned down in 1996, Mr Spider happened to Jon soon after when he was 8.

Oh my god, just got to the TMA liveshow and Jon and Martin’s first meeting is so ridiculous I'm crying.

I don't understand how it took Martin such a long time to figure out that Jon might do a good impression of a snotty, stoic academic but he’s actually an anxious idiot when their first meeting was so stupid!

Yeah fine Martin let a dog trick him with its cute face and sneaked into the archive but what kind of person responds with "...in general?" when asked if they've seen a dog? Did he think a perfect stranger was accosting him at work to ask him if he’s ever seen a dog in his life?

I can't believe Martin was even surprised that Jon thought he was a ghost. I can’t believe Martin was ever intimidated by him. I can’t believe Martin ever let him live it down. Every one of their interactions for like, six months should be some variation of:

Jon: Martin, have you seen my glasses?

Martin: Yes Jon, they’re very nice. They make you look very smart.

Jon: What? No, I can’t find them!

Martin: Oh! I thought you meant like, in general.

Jon: *silently seethes*

Martin: They’re on your head, by the way.
